✨✧ LakesideShot Of Love/Rough Riders/Fantastic Voyage (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of classic funky albums from Lakeside – with bonus tracks too! First up is Shot Of Love – Lakeside's first album for Solar – and the beginning of a very fruitful relationship for the band and the label! The record's a great one – cut long before the Solar funk sound had gotten cliched – and it includes a key early hit in the Solar sound, the band's "It's All The Way Live", a seven minute funky workout in the tight LA ensemble funk mode. Other tracks include "Given In To Love", "Time", "Visions Of My Mind", and "Shot Of Love". Rough Riders is a sweet second effort from Lakeside – Ohio funk given a sweet LA glow, thanks to the Solar Records power duo of Leon Sylvers and Dick Griffey! The Midwest/Cali bridge is perfect here – as there's lots of raw roots given a tight focus on the record – that move that not only made groups like Lakeside a key force in the evolution of funky soul at the end of the 70s, but also helped pave the way for a decade of music to come – and lots of later influence on hip hop as well! Titles include the super-funky "If You Like Our Music" – plus "Pull My Strings", "I Can't Get You Out Of My Head", "From 9:00 Until", "I'll Never Leave You", and "All In My Mind". Fantastic Voyage is a crowning achievement from Lakeside – one of the key albums to link Ohio funk roots with a smoother LA groove – all served up in a way that had limitless influence for years to come! Bass is definitely at the head of these arrangements, but there's plenty of great guitar too – riffing and scratching in a way that percolates the tunes wonderfully – keeping plenty of funk in the mix without falling into the too-uptight traps that sometimes mired other groups. But almost even better are the vocals – which are tight and well-placed – never an afterthought, but always a key part of the groove, thanks to plenty of great hooks that really send the tunes home! Titles include "Eveready Man", "Say Yes", "Strung Out", "Fantastic Voyage", "I Need You", and "Your Love Is On The One". CD package features bonus 7" mixes of "It's All The Way Live", "Pull My Strings", "From 9:00 Until", "Fantastic Voyage", and "Your Love Is On The One". CD

Takuya Kuroda, Akihiro Nishiguchi, & OthersBlue Note Voyage ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
A really fantastic 80th birthday tribute to Blue Note Records – one that has a host of younger Japanese jazz musicians banding together to deliver their own versions of Blue Note classics from back in the day! The lineup is wonderful, and very adept at changing up from track to track – Jun Miyakwawa on Hammond and piano, Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, Akihiro Nishiguchi on tenor, May Inoue on guitar, Ai Kuwabara on piano, Ryuta Tsunoda on bass, and both Tomo Kanno and Shun Ishiwaka on drums – players who not only understand the spirit of the music, but also very much rise with each other in a sense of fresh arrangements that moves the record way past just a sleepy remake of the past! Instead, we hear plenty of currents of the more contemporary Tokyo scene – on titles that include "Maiden Voyage", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cleopatra's Dream", "Midnight Blue", "Song For My Father", "Sidewinder", and "Night In Tunisia". Alan HawkshawRoad Forward – KPM 1192 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A fantastic set from sound library keyboard genius Alan Hawkshaw – one that's got a very positive, upbeat mix of acoustic and electric elements – and some mighty nice keys from the man himself! Alan's got ears here that open up channels of sound through territory that includes catchy 70s TV themes, more funky action moments, and even some more subtle currents of jazz – especially on a few cuts that almost feel as if Hawkshaw is beating Bob James on CTI at his own game! Every track is pretty darn great – and there's no filler at all, especially if you like 70s electric keyboard soundtracks – on titles that include "Sky Train", "Destination Venus", "Current Affairs", "Strangelands", "Sheer Elegance", "Mystique Voyage", and "Cruising". Zdenek LiskaIkarie XB-1 ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1963. New Copy ... $14.99
Fantastic sounds from outer space – a electro-acoustic masterpiece, put together for a Czech sci-fi film of the 60s – but done in a mode that stretches far out into space beyond the world of cinema! The music is stark and dark at some times – almost with an electro-shock approach – but other moments are beautifully tuneful, too – and as things pick up, there's even a few jazzier passages that are similar to Peter Thomas' great work on the Raumpatrouille soundtrack! This one's still a lot spookier than that one – and some of the timings of the music have this wonderful crash-up vibe, which is pretty darn unique. Titles include "The Tiger's Breath", "Dark Star", "Do Not Eat The Fruit", "EVA Will Teach You", "Surveillance On Standby/Alpha Centauri", "Sunflower For A New Star", "Voyage To The End", and "The White Planet". LP, Vinyl record album
(Plays at 45rpm, for extra-high fidelity!)

Three Ring CircusGroovin' On The Sunshine ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good ... $2.99
A weird bit of sunshine pop – with the unusual feature that side one of the album is vocal, and side two is instrumental! There's some wonderful backings on the set – almost in a Rotary Connection mode, with lots of strange production, echoey orchestrations, and a good mix of conventional instrumentation turned trippy, next to rockish influences on guitar. Very wild stuff, especially on the instrumentals – and with tracks that include "Fantastic Voyage", "Groovin On Sunshine", "So True", "Lovin Machine", and "I Can't Be Trusted". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Vinyl has a short click in one spot, and label has a sticker.)

Solar/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... About July 22, 2020
West coast soul galore – as the mighty Solar Records catalog comes alive in the hands of DJ Osshy – who delivers a non-stop mix that brings together almost 30 tracks from the legendary LA powerhouse of soul! As you'd guess from the title, the tracks here are on the clubbier side of the spectrum – but that also includes lots of upbeat 80s funk, in addition to some of the 70s disco cut by Solar in their earliest years – which makes for a great sense of groovy variety throughout! Titles include "Take That To The Bank (12" mix)" by Shalamar, "Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside, "Emergency" by The Whispers, "Come Back Lover Come Back" by The Sylvers, "Call Me" by Bill Wolfer, "Do You Like Our Music" by Collage, "I Surrender" by The Deele, "No Parking On The Dance Floor" by Midnight Star, "I Just Can't Without Your Love" by Carrie Lucas, "Groove Control" by Dynasty, "Slow Jam" by Midnight Star, "I Can Make It Better" by The Whispers, "Take It To The Top" by The Sylvers, and "It's All The Way Live" by Lakeside. VariousTrip To The Moon – 13 Super Groovy Soul, Rhythm N Blues, & Funk Songs About the Moon ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99
Turns out, folks were going to the moon long before Neil Armstrong took his giant step for mankind – spinning out into space with rare singles like these – all great moon-themed numbers that rocket into space with solid fuel of their own! The set's got this fantastic mix of styles – deep soul, heavy funk, raw garage rock, and stomping R&B – plus a few other numbers that almost defy description, but which share plenty with the rest in terms of their space-age themes and cool approach to instrumentation and production! There's plenty of playful moments throughout – and the whole thing is a groovy collection of tracks that we mostly wouldn't have heard otherwise. Titles include "Walking On The Moon" by Rev Jamel & Bob Johnson, "Sputnik" by Sidney Owens & North South Connection, "Moon Man Is Back" by La La Wilson, "Crazy Stockings On The Moon" by The Swinging Astronauts, "Moon Child" by Ernest & DL Rocco, "Mars In 75 (part 1)" by Sunny Man Kado, "Mondgesicht" by Orchester Ambros Seelos, "Moon Child" by Scott Cunningham Band, and "Voyage To The Moon" by Black Fox. ✨✧ Fratello Joseph BassiCiao Amore (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A trio record without any drums – which allows for really great interplay between the bass of Fratello Joseph Bassi, the piano of Domenico Sanna, and tenor of Max Ionata! We're used to hearing Ionata in a more snapping sort of session, but he's maybe even more compelling here – carving out some sharp, soulful lines next to the fantastic interplay between bass and piano, all given this warmth that will really have us paying a lot more attention to Bassi in the future! The depth of his tones are wonderful – never overplayed, but delivered with this stark, simple, almost economical mode that's a nice contrast to the more fluid, but equally colorful work of Sanna on piano. Titles include "Sno Pease", "Voyage", "I Know You Know", "Promenade", "Say No", "Ciro Chi", and "Giochi Di Luci". CD
