FancyComplete Recordings (Wild Thing/Something To Remember/Let's Go On Somewhere/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Lemon (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
Great work from Fancy – a group who could sport hard rock chops on the guitar, but a very catchy groove upfront – thanks in part to vocals from the lovely Annie Kavanagh! The group have a style that's very well-suited to the emerging glammy generation of UK pop – the guitars are fuzzy, and nicely push to the edges of the mix – while Annie's vocals give everything a sweeter crossover vibe that really sends things home – as do the rhythms, which often have a slight current of funk – thanks to monstrous drums from Les Binks! The elements come together beautifully here on these three key records from the group – the first two studio efforts, the last a surprisingly strong live date recorded at Ronnie Scotts in 1975. 3CD set features 31 tracks in all – which includes bonus tracks – all packaged with a detailed booklet of notes. Titles include "Wild Thing", "Between The Devil & Me", "One Night", "Touch Me", "Something To Remember", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "You've Been In Love Too Long", "She's Riding The Rock Machine", "I Was Made To Love Him", "Love For Sale", "The Tour Song", "Stop", and "Sidewinder". ✨✧ Lightmen Plus OneFancy Pants (2CD version – mono/stereo versions) ... CD
Judnell/Now Again, 1971. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the most righteous sounds we've ever heard from Houston legends The Lightmen – recorded at a time when the group was at their most spiritual, and very firmly following a cosmic path set down by drummer Bubbha Thomas! The music here owes nothing to the hippest sounds coming from the coastal cities – and even the undergrounds of Chicago and Detroit in the early 70s – and in fact, there's a vibe here that would be right at home with the Tribe Records spirit of the motor city, as the group balance their freewheeling inclinations with a nice sense of rhythm as well! Players include Doug Harris on some excellent soprano, tenor, and flute – plus Virgil Solomon on flute and alto, James Hensley on trumpet and light whistle, Joe Singleton on trombone, and Marshia Frazier on electric piano. Titles include "Sorrow Bitterness & Revolution", "Hope", "Blue Tip", "On The Road Home", "Song Of Praise", and "Ujimma". 2CD version features the standard stereo mix and the unissued mono version – plus a great booklet of notes! ✨✧ Bobbie GentryGirl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters (Ode To Billie Joe/Delta Sweete/Local Gentry/Touch Em With Love/Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell/Fancy/Patchwork/BBC/bonus tracks) (8CD set) ... CD
Capitol (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 8CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on the original debut album here – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This huge package features everything that Bobbie ever recorded for the label – not just some great full albums, but also some rare singles, demos, and alternate takes – plus 75 unreleased tracks (!) – and then a full incredible album Live At The BBC – which features 26 tracks of Gentry really knocking it out of the park. The BBC material has these really dark, brooding orchestrations – almost like Bobbie's getting some Scott Walker late 60s backings – and the whole box set might be worth it alone for that double-length album! The package is a very cool 10" slipcover – with a huge booklet of notes, postcards, lyric inserts, and more – 177 tracks in all, with albums that include Ode To Billie Joe, The Delta Sweete, Local Gentry, Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Touch Em With Love, Fancy, Patchwork, and Live At The BBC. Tim BuckleyLady Give Me Your Key – The Unissued 1967 Solo Acoustic Sessions ... LP
Future Days, 1967. New Copy ... $14.99 24.98
A lost treasure for any fan of Tim Buckley – material from two different sessions recorded in 1967, both of which include a few songs that never appeared elsewhere! As the title implies, the recordings here are acoustic – mostly with guitar and Buckley's vocals very much upfront in the mix, at a level that traces an even deeper line back to folk music – but which, throughout, is always graced by that amazing sense of phrasing that made Tim unlike any of his contemporaries! The stripped-down setting is a fantastic one for his vocals – which are possibly even more mindblowing without any sort of studio arrangement or fancy production. Material comes from one rare reel-to-reel tape, only recently discovered – and a rare acetate of another session – and the sound quality for both is great. The package comes with detailed notes on the material, and an in-depth interview with co-lyricism Larry Beckett – and titles include "Sixface", "Contact", "Pleasant Street", "Lady Give Me Your Key", "Once Upon A Time", "Marigold", "Carnival Song", "She's Back Again", and "I Can't Leave You Lovin Me". Andy FuscoRemembrance ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
The first session from Andy Fusco after a stretch that nearly took him out of the game – and a record that shows that he's very much back in top formation! Fusco's got this way of blowing the alto that's nice and raspy, almost with the depth of a tenor – working here alongside some bold yet bright trumpet work from Joe Magnarelli – who seems to do a nice job of amplifying Fusco's ideas along the way – in a group that also includes Peter Zak on piano, David Wong on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums! There's nothing too fancy going on here, but the record's the rock-solid sort that Andy Fusco's been giving us for many years – with titles that include "Remembrance", "Conception", "Navan's Apple", "All American", and "Blues For Baileys". Gang ColoursKeychain Collection ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2012. Used ... $0.99
Melodic and atmospheric sounds from Gang Colours – fragile and tuneful material that's somewhat of a surprise from the Brownswood label! I guess we shouldn't really think of what Gang Colours does here as that much of a departure for the label, given their unpredictable oeuvre is never all that easy to pigeonhole, yet it still caught us off guard – in the best kind of way. Piano and synth float over intermittently spare and busier beats, vocals and textural waves of sound. What really sets it apart is the mood – we don't want to call it somber, but it's definitely got a haunting feel! Includes "Heavy Petting", "Forgive Me?", "To Repel Ghosts", "Pebble Dash", "Tissues & Fivers", "Botley In Bloom", "Fancy Restaurant", "On Compton Bay", "Rollo's Ivory Tale" and more. CD

Chico HamiltonMaster (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Enterprise/Culture Factory (France), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
A totally excellent bit of funk from Chico Hamilton – working with a great group that more than helps their leader live up to the album's title! The record's a real lost gem – and it's got Chico working in much funkier territory than before, grooving with complicated rhythms, and a heavy sound that features lots of work on organ and guitar. Lowell George (of Little Feat fame) is playing slide guitar in the group, giving the sound a great, muddy propellant – which only gets stronger with the help of Simon Nava and Sam Clayton on congas, plus heavy organ and piano by Stu Garner, Jerry Aiello and Bill Payne. Includes the killer Latin groover "Conquistadores 74", plus "Stu", "Feels Good", "Fancy", "Stacy", Gengis" and "I Can Hear The Grass Grow". CD

✨✧ Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... CD
Stones Throw, 2004. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. Classic tracks from the early years of highlife in Ghana – a time when the guitar-based styles and lively rhythms of the genre were first coming into play, and mixed with some of the more jazz-based styles of years before! The mix here is almost a West African equivalent to the rise of western swing in the US at the end of the 30s – a way of mixing older instrumental ensemble styles with some more contemporary, more regional elements – sounding wonderful her in some key examples of the style! ✨✧ VariousUnusual Sounds ... CD
Anthology, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
The sounds here aren't that unusual at all – and in fact, they're mostly pretty darn groovy – a superb selection of sound library funk from the glory days of the European scene – collected here together in support of the book of the same name! In case you're new to the scene – the Euro sound library world of the 60s and 70s was a place where extremely creative musicians could come together and create their own sort of grooves without a worry for placement on the record charts – as most of these cuts were locked in the vaults, then licensed briefly for use on radio, TV, or commercials – which led to a few of these gems getting some famous, but anonymous play on classic cop or crime shows at the time. The compilation brings together some of the best examples of this scene – loads of cuts that have been our favorites over the years – a whopping 20 tracks that include "Half Forgotten Daydreams" by John Cameron, "Funky Fanfare" by Keith Mansfield, "Weeping Eelgrass" by Mladen Franko, "Mild Maniac" by Peter Patzer, "Dream Number Two" by Roland Hollinger, "Soft Wind" by Gary Pacific Orchestra, "Tropicola" by Stringtronics, "Survivor" by Klaus Weiss, "La Dimonstrazione" by Daniele Patucchi, "Feeling Tense" by Stefano Torossi, "Xenos Cosmos" by Janko Nilovic, "Night Breeze" by Franco Micalizzi, and "Fancy Good" by Electric Machine. Nothing fancy – but some great straight-ahead blowing from Stitt and Jug! The album's a quintet session, with John Houston piano, Buster Williams bass, and George Brown drums providing all the rhythm. But the real focus is on the twin-sax frontline – with Sitt taking up the alto on a few numbers, but mostly blowing tenor head to head with Jug. The album was supposedly recorded in 1961, but not issued until later in the 60s by Prestige – and it's right up there with the excellent work that the team were cutting at the time for Verve and Argo. Titles include "A Mess", "Water Jug", "New Blues Up & Down", "Red Sails In The Sunset", and "A Pair Of Red Pants". CD

Kellee Patterson's far from her early jazz roots on the Black Jazz label – but that's A-OK with us, as she's changed up modes with an upbeat soul style that's equally nice – but in a very different way! At some level, the shift is a bit like that made by Jean Carne during the same period – as Patterson's got roots in jazz, which really helps her bring the most out of a tune – but also merges with more sophisticated modern soul modes, all handled here by Gene Russell – another former labelmate at Black Jazz, and Kellee's partner too. The record's got a nice jazzy vibe that's a good bridge between her earlier work on Black Jazz, and her later, straighter soul material – a dose of funk in all the right places, and a touch of spiritual leanings too – really put together with a wonderful feel that sets the album apart from much other work of the time! Includes a sublime breakbeat version of "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" – with killer drums, and an excellent monologue at the beginning – plus a great cover of Grover Washington's "Mister Magic", with some interesting vocals. ✨✧ Bud PowellBud Powell In Paris (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprising Bud Powell album for Reprise Records – and one of the label's hippest jazz titles ever! When Frank Sinatra first started up the Reprise imprint, he let Duke Ellington do a bit of A&R for the jazz division – and one of the first things Ellington did was capture the great Bud Powell in his then-local setting of Paris – in this rough edgey session that turned out to be one of Powell's last albums, and one of his best from the 60s. The record is nothing fancy on the outside – just simple piano trio versions of jazz standards like "Parisian Thoroughfare", "I Can't Get Started", "Jordu", and "Dear Old Stockholm" – but Powell's dark genius turns the tracks into jagged little razors, cutting with an emotional depth that's quite surprising. Duke Ellington produced – and trio members include Gilbert Rovere on bass and Carl Fields on drums. Also included are two bonus tracks, "Indiana" and "B Flat Blues". CD

Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A jangle-pop spectacular from The Five Man Electrical Band – an incredibly groovy outfit from late 60s Canada! Although issued at the end of the 60s, the album's got a sweetly-crafted feel that sounds a lot like some of the best mid 60s pop – particularly that coming from overseas – almost a lost Brit Invasion sort of sound, but one that's tuned with a few odder touches that show the group's ear for some of the west coast musical changes of the time. All tunes are incredibly catchy, and recorded with great focus on the jangly lead guitar – so much so that the vocals are almost buried down a bit more in the mix, which makes for a kind of cooly tripped-out sound. Titles include "Maple Lane", "Fancy Dancin Man", "Black Sheep Of The Family", "Running Back", "Didn't Know The Time", "Five Man Electrical Band", and "Private Train". Jocelyn's got this round, firm tone throughout – balanced with the boldness of pianist Addison Frei – whose work here is equally great, and kind of fills things up around the sides while Gould comes straight down the middle – driven on nicely by the bass of George DeLancey and drums of Quincy Davis – all in modes that really feel a lot different than most other guitar quartet albums, even though these guys aren't trying to do any thing too fancy or gimmicky. The group also features guest horn work along the way – the tenor of Brandon Wright on two tracks, and the trombone of Michael Dease and trumpet of Anthony Stanco on three others – on titles that include the Gould originals "A Fleeting Moment", "Change Of Plans", "Center Of The Universe", "Kindling", "The Game Changer", and "Argyle". ✨✧ Gerry MulliganNight Lights ... LP
Philips, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really nice one from Gerry – an oft-overlooked mid 60s session, one that has him working with a sextet that includes Jim Hall, Art Farmer, and Bob Brookmeyer, in addition to usual Mulligan rhythm-mates Bill Crow and Dave Bailey. There's a nice soulful bottom to the set, and stronger interplay from the horns than you might get in a Mulligan album of a few years before – nothing fancy, but a strong set of original tunes that break from the mode of the 50s. Titles include "Tell Me When", "Festive Minor", "Wee Small Hours", "Prelude In E Minor", and "Night Lights". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Tim BuckleyLady Give Me Your Key – The Unissued 1967 Solo Acoustic Sessions ... CD
Future Days, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Electric MachineDisco Fashion ... LP
Erezioni (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The sound is electric, but also pretty darn funky – not the colder electro disco that would dominate the European scene in the 80s, but the earlier mode that often had lots of live instrumentation at the core – then augmented by sweet touches on moog and other keyboards! The instrumentation is nice and tight throughout – and the whole thing is very much in the best moogy disco modes of the underground – maybe a bit more offbeat than a record on P&P, but with a similar appeal at times. Not much is known about the original group – but titles include "Space Ship", "Briskness", "To Squeeze Through", "Fancy Good", "Disco Fashion", and "Off The Track". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Erik TaggRendezvous ... LP
Poker/P-Vine (Japan), 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Warmly crafted vocal work from Erik Tagg – a Dutch singer who'd relocated to Texas by the time of this mid 70s set – singing here in English with some nicely jazzy backings on the set! There's a style here that's a bit singer/songwriter, but somewhat deeper too – one that has a nicely smooth glide, and a slight undercurrent of soul at times – particularly in the Free Soul mode, and all the bright colors and good feelings that reference might imply! Tagg's lyrics are decent, but the real appeal of the set is the overall sound – the blend of his well-produced vocals with the heavy keyboards in the instrumentation – often served up with a smooth and groovy quality that reminds us of much bigger-name sets from the LA scene of the time. Titles include "Got To Be Lovin You", "Rendezvous", "Fancy Meeting You", "Marja's Tune", "Babies", "Soul Touch", and "Life Goes On". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousStar Creature Vibes ... LP
Star Creature, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stellar work from the Star Creature label – the Chicago imprint that seems to be picking up the torch where all those fancy London and European labels dropped it many years ago! The work here is fresh and forward-thinking – rooted in older house and funky soul modes, but completely contemporary – filled with rhythms that really find the way forward, instrumentation that soars to the heavens on waves of cosmic energy, and vocals that keep the whole thing nicely grounded on the planet! The quality is superb – and titles include "A Shooting Star" by Saucy Lady, "Tunnel Vision" by Proh Mic, "The Finest (E Live rmx)" by Kutkorners with Amalia, "Instant Sunshine" by Ourra & The Gravity Drive, "Do Me Like That (slight extension rmx)" by E Live with Chesta Blake, "Exoplanet Love" by Shrio Schwarz, and "Cassette Funk" by Giovanni Damico.
