Bloomsbury, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best writers on Memphis gives us a journey through his musical hometown – portrayed through chapters that focus on some of the city's most legendary figures – including James Carr, Sam Phillips, Jim Dickenson, Robert Johnson, Charlie Feathers, Jeff Buckley, Tav Falco, Bobby Blue Bland, Alex Chilton, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even Cat Power! The chapters are a mixture of history, narrative, and interview material – all done with that great sense of prose that makes Robert Gordon such an important musical chronicler of the south – and the book is 252 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Cookin On 3 BurnersSoul Messin' ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... $5.99
Nothing messy here – as the Burners are tighter than ever, and bat this one out of the park with a massively funky groove! The core combo features organ, guitar, and drums – with occasional horns added from time to time – and most numbers here step off with a really badass instrumental groove that runs from mod 60s soul to gritty 70s funk, with a few jazzy riffs thrown into the mix from time to time, especially on the organ lines. Kylie Auldist brings in some deep soul vocals on two tracks – and Falcon Williams sings on two more – and the whole thing's got a lively, upbeat groove – and an all-classic sound that's like finding a pile of rare funky 45s stashed away in the back of a dusty old shop. Titles include "Cars", "Goose It Up", "Piranha", "Seen Through Your Disguise", "Soul Messin", "The Proving Grounds", "Hole In My Pocket", "This Girl", "Dog Wash", "Tokyo Saucer", "Push It Up", and "Four N Twenty". Fabio Fabor/Antonio ArenaSuperman (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Edizioni Minstrel/Spettro (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
80s keyboards galore – lots of work on Oberheim, Arp, and Polymoog instruments – mixed with a bit of Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano too – all set to lots of beats programmed on a Commodore 64 and early DMX drum machine! This isn't one of those retro-styled albums by a youngster – but instead, a lost Italian sound library take on the sound of electro soul – served up here in an all-instrumental setting, with ten great grooves that seem to mix the rhythms of the clubs with the beats of the street! A few moments get a bit spacier – in more familiar sound library styles – but the whole thing is pretty darn tuneful overall, and even seem to echo some of the catchier modes from the 80s European scene. Titles include "Woobinda", "Superman", "Blue Falcon", "Screw Driver", "Tigerman", "Magma", "High Ball", "Phantaman", and "Robot N Roll". LP, Vinyl record album

Steve ReidNova (with bonus download) ... LP
Mustevic Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An underground soul jazz classic – massive grooves from drummer Steve Reid, and exactly the kind of set that's gotten him so much attention in recent years! There's a mixture of freedom and tightness here that's really wonderful – some of the looser elements of the loft jazz generation, mixed with an inherent sense of rhythm that always set Reid's records apart from the rest – a groove that comes not just from his own pulsations on the drum kit, but also from the elliptical basslines of Richard Williams on electric and Luis Angel Falcon on acoustic, and the mixed organ and piano lines of keyboardist Les Walker. Joe Rigby brings some really sharp-edged sax work to the record, alongside the trumpet of Ahmed Abdullah, who really sounds wonderful here – bringing a spirituality to the album that's clearly borrowed from his time with Sun Ra. The album includes the great groover "Lions of Judah" – which has a very Ra-like quality – plus other great cuts "Long Time Black", "Sixth House", "Nova", and "Free Spirits Unknown". VariousHarry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music Volume 2 – Social Music (photo cover) ... LP
Folkways, 1920s/1930s/1940s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $59.99
A landmark collection of music – the now-famous series of American Folk Music volumes put together by Harry Smith in the 50s! The work here spans the space of a few early decades of recorded music – all in styles expertly chosen by Smith, with countless examples of music that might have fallen beneath the sands of time if not otherwise included in the series! Even back at the original release of the collection, the series was a crucial bit of musical archeology – and over the ensuing space of decades, has only gone onto become even more important. Styles run the gamut from blues to roots to folk and other styles in between – and this second volume focuses on social music, with songs by Bunt Stephens, JW Day, A Hunt's Ramblers, Sister M Nelson, Sanctified Singers, Phipps Singers, Blind Willie Johnson, Breux Freres, Joseph Falcon, and many others! VariousLondon American Label Year By Year – 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The sound of America in 1967 – but presented here with a very unusual focus – as all the tracks on the set were issued in the UK by the "American" branch of the London Records label! As such, the work is a very different portrait of US music at the time than you'd hear on a collection from our side of the Atlantic – as London UK grabbed all these unusual, overlooked songs from a variety of labels big and small – and put them out in England for an audience with ears much more tuned towards hipper, more high-quality singles! The music is a mix of soul, rock, country, and other modes – often recorded a few years before the UK issue, but collected together here in a really fresh snapshot of music you might have thought you already knew pretty darn well. As always with Ace Records, the set list is great and the notes offer up a heck of a lot of detail on the music – 28 titles that include "Four Days Of Rain" by The Raggamuffins, "He Ain't Give You None" by Freddie Scott, "My Girl Josephine" by Jerry Jaye, "Humphrey Stomp" by Earl Harrison, "Can You Help Me" by The Knickerbockers, "When You're Gone" by Brenda & The Tabulations, "Billy The Kid" by Wilson Pickett & The Falcons, "The Little Black Egg" by The Nightcrawlers, "Eight Men Four Women" by OV Wright, "Huff Puff" by Mickey Dolenz, "Bob" by The Willis Brothers, "Big Boss Man" by Erma Franklin, "Three Hundred & Sixty Five Days" by Donald Height, "Boogaloo Down Broadway" by Fantastic Johnny C, "You're The Love" by The Sixpence, and "Snap Your Fingers" by Gail Wynters. VariousRemembering Roots Of Soul – Birth Of Motor Town ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $6.99
A tight set of rare Detroit soul – culled from the lost Lupine label, and recorded during the years 1963 to 1965! The set features work by some great artists in their early days – talents who'd later go onto record more famous work for bigger independent labels, like Stax, Malaco, and other southern imprints during the 70s – and in a way, although the source of the material is Detroit-based, the artists on the set almost make it a "roots of southern soul" collection, as it well illustrates the kind of pipeline that existed between Detroit and southern scenes in Memphis, Jackson, and other points. Titles include "What's My Destiny" and "Keep On Loving Me" by Joe Stubbs, "Witchcraft In The Air" and "You Killed My Love" by Betty Lavette, "That's What I Aim To Do" and "You Must Know I Love You" by The Falcons, "I'll Get Along" and "All I Need Is You" by Marv Johnson & The Primettes, "I'm Her Yo Yo Man" and "I'll Never Find Another Girl Like You" by Eddie Floyd, "My Baby" and "Baby I'm Coming Home" by Mack Rice, "He's So Fine" and "Baby Sitting" by the Corvells, and "Searching For My Baby" and "Baby Won't You Change Your Mind" by Al Garner & The Primettes. ✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band 2 ... CD
Daptone, 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". CD

✨✧ Isao SuzukiMongolian Chant ... CD
King (Japan), 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really inventive little record from Japanese bassist Isao Suzuki – and a set that, like most of his best 70s work, really defies any sort of easy categorization! Suzuki's got a wonderfully wide range of ideas running through his music – at one level a really close-up and personal interprtation of the bass that makes for some beatiful solos (including work on piccolo bass too) – but at another, a wider group vision that has the instruments coming together in unexpected ways, with really creative rhythms that definitely keep things fresh. There's a bit of electricity at points, giving some fusion inflections to some tunes – yet in ways that are quite different than regular fusion records – and the album features guest work from Shigeharu Mukai on trombone and Toshiyuki Honda on soprano sax and flute. Titles include "Mongolian Chant", "Joy", "Misperception", "Falcon", and "Impression Of Charles Mingus". CD

Cairo/Mississippi, Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little set of rare soul music – served up by the Cairo imprint of Mississippi Records – and done with a very similar approach to their other reissues of folk, blues, and world music! The set focuses in on rootsier sounds, especially from the 60s – with lots of deep soul gems from both big names and some more obscure artists – all packaged with a detailed booklet of notes, in the best Mississippi style! The style is almost as if Folkway Records put together their own soul collection, but with work from other labels – and titles include "In My Heart" by Barbara & The Browns, "Tired Of Being Your Fool" by Nelson Sanders, "It's Not That Easy" by Reuben Bell & The Casanovas, "Since You've Been Gone" by The Falcons, "Can't Stay Away (parts 1 & 2)" by Slim & Ann, "Don't Ever Leave Me" by Bob & Earl, "Go Now" by Bessie Banks, "I Keep Forgetting You Don't Love Me No More" by The Thornton Sisters, "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Let Me Down Easy" by Betta LaVette, "Life Is Too Short" by Benny Spellman, "Lament" by Mamie Perry, "I'm Missing You" by Loretta Williams, and "Everybody Knows" by OV Wright. Outta Sight (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Deeply soulful sounds from a crucial time in music – that late 50s/early 60s stretch when R&B was merging into soul, and created so many wonderful records in the process! The set's filled with quick-stepping groovers that are on the hip side of the spectrum – tunes that might have a jazzy inflection here, or a skittish rhythm there – and always topped by a fantastic singer who really knows how to belt it out of the park! These are the same sort of gems we've been digging on Jazzman's Jukebox Jam series – and titles include "Screaming Please" by Buddy Ace, "Anytime" by Dee Irwin, "Where's My Money" by Willie Jones, "For This I Thank You" by Geno Parks Lovetones, "It's Alright" by Art Lassiter, "You Don't Have To Go" by Sam Myers, "A Help Each Other Romance" by Lavern Baker & Ben E King, "Miss You So" by Lillian Offitt, "Workin Man's Song" by The Falcons, and "Sally Lou" by Little Frankie Edwards. Contrast, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title might be Blues For Christmas, but lots of these tunes are pretty bright and jumpy, too – a nice mix of 50s R&B and early soul styles, served up here in a mighty sweet little package that's a great antidote to some of too-familiar Christmas collections on the market! Most of the artists are names you'll know already – especially if you've got some 50s blues in your collection – but the setting is mighty fresh, and the tunes together spin out for a nicely extended batch of Holiday listening that goes way past the obvious! Titles include "Oh Holy Night" by The Blue Notes, "Christmas Letter" by La Fets & Kitty, "Christmas In Jail" by The Youngsters, "Christmas Time (part 1)" by Jimmy McCracklin, "Can This Be Christmas" by Eddie Floyd & The Falcons, "Rock & Roll Santa Claus" by Huey Smith & The Clowns, "Christmas Celebration" by BB King, "Christmas Tears" by Freddy King, "Rock & Roll Santa Claus" by Babs Gonzales, "When Was Jesus Born" by Marian Williams, "After New Years Eve" by The Heartbeats, "It's Christmas Time" by Marvin & Johnny, and "Santa" by Lightnin Hopkins. Capitol, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Not really a vocal jazz record at all – although we will be honest, and say that Jack does do some singing on the set – but a comedy album, and one that shows yet another career in the wide-ranging career of LA jazzman Jack Sheldon! The record catches Jack live before a "studio party" at Capitol – running through open-ended routines that deal a bit with jazz, and which do feature some singing – but which are more in a post-Lenny Bruce sort of hipster comedy bag. Jack plays no trumpet on the set, and his singing is mostly in the raspy goofy mode that he's use later on TV a lot – but hey, we do like him so much, and he's got such a compelling personality, that we have to admit we're charmed by the set! ✨✧ VariousApollo Saturday Night ... LP
Atco, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible session of soul – tracks recorded live at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, featuring some of the hippest Stax and Atlantic artists in a very raw setting! The album's got a feel that's a lot less forced than other famous live Apollo sets of the time – very relaxed, but very authentic too – as the singers are given plenty of space to take the lead, and heard here with a quality that's more spontaneous than some of their studio sides. The audience gets a bit of space – but never as bombastically so as on a James Brown record – and given how many artists Atlantic discovered at The Apollo, the album's a nice nod of "thanks" in the right direction! Titles include "I Found A Love" and "Alabama Bound" by The Falcons, "Pain In My Heart" and "These Arms Of Mine" by Otis Redding, "Speedo's Back In Town" by The Coasters, "Misty" and "Say Yeah" by Doris Troy, "Rockin Chair" and "Walkin The Dog" by Rufus Thomas, "Stand By Me" and "Groovin" by Ben E King, and a special finale version of "What'd I Say". LP, Vinyl record album
