StarcrostStarcrost ... CD
Fable/Jazzman (UK), 1976. Used ... $9.99
An incredible bit of funky fusion from the Texas scene of the 70s – a record that's unlike anything else we've ever heard from the Lone Star state, and which still sounds plenty fresh all these many years later! Starcrost have a sound that mixes jazzy riffing with great female lead vocals – sung in a style that's a bit soulful, but which also has a fair bit of jazz in the mix too – a blend that was much more common for some of the Bay Area groups of the 70s, particularly some of those recording for Fantasy Records. The vibe here is a bit like Pleasure at times – fusion focused into a funkily grooving mode – and the playing is superb throughout – never cliched, never too over the top, and never filled with too-jamming styles that could slow down the groove! There's a great balance between breeziness and all-out grooving that keeps the whole album fresh throughout – a quality that was hardly ever done this well on albums by bigger groups of the period. Titles include "Flow", "Quicksand", "Catharsis", "False Paradise", "Getting Going", "Funky Little Home", and "Da Ba O" – plus the unreleased tracks "I've Got A Plan" and "Run". CD

Steam HeatAustin Funk ... CD
Fable/Jazzman (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $14.99
A legendary album from the Texas scene of the 70s – exactly the kind of set that helps the city of Austin live up to its massive reputation for music! The group's got a wonderful blend of jazz, soul, and funk – a unique blend that reminds us of our favorite funky Fantasy Records sides from the Bay Area scene, but which is even more special here as a standout set from Austin. Like some of the best ensemble funk sets of the 70s, the groove's choppy one minute, jazzy the next – really drawing from the many spirits that inhabit the 8-piece lineup, in ways that really let everyone's talents sparkle. Drums are nice and tight, and the keyboard and saxophone work is wonderful too – and titles include "Ghetto Tool", "Groove Awhile", "Keep Your Eyes On The Merchandise", "Funk N Roll", "Frozen Tundra Lady", and "Radiator". Fable/Jazzman (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky and free-thinking fusion from the Texas scene of the mid 70s – a great indie album by a group who travelled in the same territory as the soul combo Starcrost! Although American, the work here has some great qualities that remind us of some of the best European fusion from the same time – a sense of soaring, stretching energy – and one that never resorts to too much jamming to carry across its message, and which juxtaposes heavier rhythms with some gentler tunes that really allow the horn parts some wonderful moments! Instrumentation include soprano sax, tenor, trumpet, electric and acoustic piano, and a fair bit of percussion too – all recorded with a great sense of warmth, almost in the mode of some of the best Fantasy Records 70s sessions! Titles include "Jig", "Halyards", "Cumulo Nimbus", "47 Tears", "March Of The Goober Woobers", and "Weedhopper" CD

ECM (Germany), 1999. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Peter Erskine's the leader of this trio date, but it's pianist John Taylor who really seems to set the tone for the record – moving effortlessly between melodic moments and more spare, sensitive passages – always with that dark edge that can make his music so great! Erskine swings when needed, punctuates things at other points – and bassist Palle Danielsson once again gives that warmly thoughtful approach that has made him one of the standout bassists for the ECM mode over the years. Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A crazy collection of singles from the pre-hippie years of the beatnik – that cool cat who loved jazz, read poetry, and dug the scene with plenty of attitude! That attitude is the main focus of most of the cuts here – obscure tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that poke fun at the heady thoughts and easy intellectualism of the beat scene – presented in a range of different styles that really run the gamut – from jazz, to rock, to many other genres in between – including a fair bit of offbeat spoken word and instrumental records too! The vibe here follows nicely in the other Lux & Ivy collections on the Righteous label – full of weird and wild records we never would have discovered otherwise – with cuts that include "Dog" by Bob Dorough, "Laffin Beatnik" by Johnny Beeman, "Reaching Into In" by Ken Nordine, "No Pictures Please" by Rod McKuen, "Manhattan Fable" by Babs Gonzales, "Pimples & Braces" by Spike Jones & The City Slickers, "Teenage Beatnik" by Louis Nye, "A Beatnik Story" by The Expressos, "Meet The Bongo Man" by Johnny O, and "William Butler Yeats On The Third Avenue El" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Ivo Perelman/Matthew Shipp/William Parker/Bobby KappIneffable Joy ... CD
ESP, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the best showcases we've heard for the tenor sax work of Ivo Perelman in years – an open, blue-tinged performance that seems to open up his horn with a lot more soul than we remember! Of course, some of the credit certainly goes to the other partners on the date – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – a lineup that benefits from the long, lovely association between Shipp and Parker, who have returned to some tremendous new heights in recent years – and whose work alone on the record is more than enough to win us over. Perelman comes as maybe a bit of icing on the cake – but of the sweetest variety – on titles that include "Bliss", "Ebullience", "Rejoicing", "Elation", "Ecstasy", and "Exuberance" – all titles that definitely describe the performance! ECM (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
One of the few albums as a leader from guitarist Mick Goodrick – a musician who's strong sense of color made him a perfect sideman for vibist Gary Burton in the 70s – and who here explores some wonderful territory of his own! The quartet here features superb work from John Surman – on soprano, baritone, and bass clarinet – and in a way, it often feels as if Surman is the leader, as Goodrick lets him stand out strong, and first – spinning out these great solos that definitely showcase the more soulful side of his talents – perhaps inspired by the warm tones of Goodrick. Mick still gets plenty of space on his own – the songs are mostly pretty long – and rhythm is from the very openly sensitive team of Eddie Gomez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. A fountain of flowing work on vibes from the great Jay Hoggard – a player who seems to be a bit more forceful here than usual, although still often giving to his usually spacious style! The group's a quintet, with some great guitar work from Kenny Burrell – played in an open-handed way that's a nice match for Hoggard's vibes – and the rest of the combo features James Weidman on piano, Marcus McLaurine on bass, and Yoron Israel on drums. The vibe is more straight ahead than some of Hoggard's more atmospheric records, which is a nice change – and titles include "Fables Of Faubus", "The Fountain", "My One & Only Love", "Sweet Potato", and "Starting Over". Charles MingusCharles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus ... LP
Candid, 1960. Very Good- ... $33.99
The title's an apt one, because after frustrations experienced working for Columbia and other labels, Mingus is finally allowed the freedom here to present his own ideas in all their unfettered glory – working with a bracingly tight quartet that features Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet and Ted Curson on trumpet! A number of the tracks here are familiar in their titles from other records, but the versions here stretch out far longer – moving past 10 minutes on 2 of the album's 4 tracks, and approaching that limit on others. But even more noticeable is the spareness of the sound – as the smaller group versions allow for a tremendous amount of solo space, really letting the focus fall on the two horn players, with the bass of Mingus and drums of Dannie Richmond shading in the space behind and beyond. Titles include "Folk Forms No. 1", "All the Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother", and the original uncensored version of "Faubus Fables". LP, Vinyl record album

Charles MingusMingus Ah Um ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1959. Used ... $18.99
One of Charles Mingus' true classics – and an essential album in any jazz collection! This 1959 gem was recorded by Mingus at a key point in his career – when he was rising from the jazz underground into the ranks of America's elite jazzmen, penning some of the most challenging work of his career, and working with incredible younger players that interpreted his work with a great deal of fire! The tracks are a bit more tightly arranged than work on some of Mingus' previous work for labels like Atlantic and Bethlehem, but that also gives them a razor-sharp emotional edge that's carried off perfectly by players who include John Handy and Shafi Hadi on alto saxes, Booker Ervin on tenor, Willie Dennis and Jimmy Knepper on trombones, Horace Parlan on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The album is filled with key Mingus classics – like "Better Git It In Your Soul", "Boogie Stop Shuffle", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", and "Fables of Faubus" – plus "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Open Letter To Duke", and "Bird Call". Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There have been lots of Lowrider soul compilations on the market over the years – documenting the great of of mellow cuts on the LA scene of the 60s – particularly the kind that could move slow, but with a heavy groove at the bottom – perfect for chilling out in the back of a car on an endless summer night! Yet few have ever done the job as well as this collection – because in the hands of Ace/Kent Records, the music finally gets proper historical context – moved past the jargon of the East LA in crowd, and presented with great sound, and the kind of detailed notes that really get at the special qualities that made the west coast soul scene so different than the east in the 60s! The set list is superb – fantastic mellow soul tracks that are perfect, even if you don't care about this history – and titles include "It's Not That Easy" by Reuben Bell with The Casanovas, "I Really Love You" by The Ambassadors, "As I Sit Here" by The Whispers, "One More Chance" by The Four Tees, "Take A Step" by Aesop's Fables, "Why'd You Put Me On" by Bobbi Row & The Englishmen, "I Wanna Chance" by The Vows, "Second Hand Happiness" by Jimmy Conwell, "Be Kind To Love" by The Interpreters, "As Long As I've Got You" by The Charmels, "Don't Forget About Me Baby" by Jeff Dale, "I'm A Lonely Man" by Bobby Burn, "Crying All By Myself" by William Bell, "I'm Just Passing Time" by Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles, "When You're Poor" by The Lovers, "It's So Hard To Break A Habit" by The Webs, "Find Me" by The Attractions, "Never Gonna Let Him Know" by Debbie Taylor, and "Pretending Dear" by The Lovelles. Both instruments are used in ways that resonate strongly with the ECM style of the time – music that's in a space both beyond jazz and classical solo cello modes – very poetic at times, with an overall sense of sound that's really wonderful – subtle at points, more strongly melodic at others – and never gimmicky at all. The music of Charles Mingus – played by a great small combo headed up by Dannie Richmond, Mingus' drummer for over 20 years! The group on the set features members from Charles' last band – and is a quintet with Ricky Ford on tenor, Jack Walrath on trumpet, Bob Neloms on piano, and Cameron Brown on bass. Tunes are taken in a gentler, and more open-handed version than used on the original recordings – a style that's a nice contrast to that of Mingus, replacing the strength of his vision with a warmth and sensitivity that makes the tunes sparkle nicely.
