✨✧ Badwater BridgeIt's Alright Tonight ... CD
FER (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet and funky soul from the San Francisco scene of the 70s – rare work recorded in the 70s, but not issued until now! The group are very much in the best tradition of those in the Fantasy Records scene of the time – with the sweet jazzy feel of Pleasure, the tightly stepping groove of Side Effect, and the warm modern soul touches that were often heard in the best Oakland acts, produced with a warm sensitivity that's kept the music fresh over all the years! The group's quite large, and has a variety of different instrumental styles – shifting from jazzy to funky to mellow with a classic 70s ensemble feel. Titles include "Always", "Is It Love", "Never Going To Be", "As Long As We're Together", "I Just Want To Tell You", "Don't Take Your Love Away", and "It's Alright Tonight". CD

✨✧ Albert AylerDedication Series VII – Village Concerts ... LP
Impulse, 1966/1978. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Way more than just another 70s 2-fer of earlier work by a 60s group – as this entire set was unreleased until this issue – and stands as a perfect counterpart to the other Village album issued by Albert Ayler on impulse! Ayler's brother Don is on trumpet, and the rest of the group includes Henry Grimes (or Alan Silva), Michel Sampson, and Beaver Harris. Titles include "Light In Darkness", "Divine Peacemaker", "Angels", and "Omega Is The Alpha". The gatefold opens to some nice liner notes. Great all the way through, and a oft-missed, but essential slice of Ayler's career! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ahmad JamalSun Set (Ahmad Jamal At The Pershing/Ahmad Jamal At The Blackhawk) ... LP
Chess, Early 60s. Very Good+ 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A 70s 2-fer that collects 2 live sides originally issued by Argo, then subsequently by Chess under the Cadet label. Classic Chicago piano jazz – featuring the very popular pianist Ahmad Jamal, recorded at the legendary Pershing Lounge, down at 63rd and Cottage Grove and at the equally legendary Blackhawk Lounge in San Francisco. For many years we didn't get these earlier sides by Jamal, prefering the later electric stuff, but you can see the blueprint of both those later sounds and the piano style that had such a huge impact on Miles here, in sets that cover lots jazz standards, including 'But Not For Me", "Moonlight In Vermont", "poinciana", "Woody'N You", "All The Things You Are", "Cherokee", "It Might As Well Be Spring" and quite a few more. ✨✧ Randy WestonLittle Niles (2LP set) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great Blue Note two-fer which compiles tracks from Randy Weston's fantastic albums recorded for United Aritsts – rare gems at the forefront of late 50s modern jazz, and records that hardly ever see the light of day! The albums are filled with seminal versions of Randy's famous compositions – played by sextet and septet lineups with players that include the cream of New York modern – Ray Copeland, Melba Liston, Johnny Griffin, Kenny Dorham, and Slide Hampton. Great work all around – and material that's really not properly been reissued over the years – making this well-annotated 70s collection as essential as an original copy, and almost as rare! Titles include "Little Niles", "High Fly", "Little Susan", "Babe's Blues", "Nice Ice", "Earth Birth", "Pam's Waltz", and "Spot Five Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ 4 HeroTwo Pages ... CD
Talkin' Loud/Mercury, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful albums to emerge out of the mid 90s drum n bass era of the London scene – a complicated set of grooves that recalls the glory days of the Chess/Cadet scene in Chicago, with touches of 70s keyboard funky jazz, Brazilian fusion, and all the expansiveness that the London boys always brought to their love of the groove! The record is still the blueprint for countless albums of its type to come – and is filled with beautiful tracks that combine funk, strings, electronics, and soulful vocals. Tracks include "Loveless" which features Ursula Rucker on vocals, plus "Spirits In Transit", "Escape That", "Cosmic Tree", "Golden Age Of Life", "Wormholes", "Star Chasers", "Pegasus 51", "De Sci Fer", "Normal Changing World", "Wishful Thinking", and "Planeteria". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorIn Transition (Jazz Advance/Love For Sale) ... LP
Blue Note, 1955/1959. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
This is the great Blue Note two-fer from the 70's that combines two rare Cecil Taylor albums from the 50's – one recorded for the Transition label, one for United Artists. First up is Jazz Advance – one of the best pre-1960 sessions by Cecil Taylor, recorded in Boston in 1956, and originally issued on the totally rare Transition label in a very small pressing! Taylor's playing here with the great bassist Buell Neidlinger, one of his prime compaitriots in the early days, and the trio (with Dennis Charles) is joined by Steve Lacy on a few tracks. The session's a great way to hear Taylor's development at the beginning, as it includes a number of jazz standards – like "Azure", "Sweet & Lovely", and "Bemsha Swing" – all given an off-kilter twist by Taylor and group. This is probably best heard on one of the album's highlights – a 9 minute solo reading of Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To"! Next is Love For Sale – a stunner of an album from Cecil Taylor's early days – a set that features three early trio tracks – which let you hear Cecil developing his freer approach on strange takes on Cole Porter's "Get Out of Town", "I Love Paris", and "Love For Sale". The other three tracks are originals by Taylor, and expand the group to a quintet with the amaaaaazing frontline talents of Ted Curson on trumpet and Bill Barron on tenor, always one of our favorite pair of modernists, and players that add richness to any session they grace. Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". Other titles include a few oddball numbers – like "Denny's Drums" and "Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson" – plus classics like "Fun Fun Fun", "Don't Worry Baby", "Keep An Eye On Summer", "Our Car Club", "Little Deuce Coup", and "Surfer Girl". Duets here between drums and alto sax – the former by Gabriel Ferrandini, the latter by Ilia Belorukov – both handled in ways that really open up both of the instruments into very fresh territory! Ferrandini is free, but often seems to hit melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – and things are sometimes vice versa for Belorukov – whose sense of improvisation with the drums is really magical, and very different than most other duets of this nature that we can think of. Marion Brown & Dave BurrellLive At Black Musician's Conference 1981 ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1981. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic testament to the slow-burning spiritual genius of Marion Brown – a player who sometimes got eclipsed in an era of bigger avant personalities, but who really gets to showcase his talents in a spare setting like this! The live performance pairs Brown's alto with the piano of Dave Burrell – another player who's sometimes understated, but in the best way possible – and together the pair sound completely sublime – gently exploring the farther reaches of tonal space with their improvisations, and almost always keeping things in relatively soulful formation! The set features beautiful readings of two Billy Strayhorn tunes – "My Little Brown Book" and "Lush Life" – balanced with original material that includes "Gossip/Fortunado", "La Placita", "Crucificado", "Puna Mae Ole", and "Punaluu Peter". BuzzcocksDifferent Kind Of Tension ... CD
Liberty/Domino, 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The third album from the great Buzzcocks – one of the most fiercely melodic bands of the punk era, and one of the best bands for tuneful, yet barbed songwriting of the late 70s, period! Different Kind Of Tension is a pretty accurate title for this set, the last of the first wave of the group's career, with weird electronic flourishes and artier sounds to be found than the furiously straightforward previous couple of records. It's not as radical of a change of pace as, say, Wire's progress from the first to third albums, but a different kind of tension, as they say. Titles include "Mad Mad Judy", "You Say You Don't Love Me", "Hollow Inside", "I Believe", "Radio Nine", "Paradise", "Sitting Round At Home", and "I Don't Know What To Do With My Life". CD

Massive work from Calibro 35 – a group we've been digging on obscure overseas releases – stepping out here on their first American record, and easily their funkiest album to date! The sound is wonderful – still filled with the older Italian soundtrack references that got the group's music going in the first place – but also driven by a much tighter sound at the bottom, especially on the drums – which really drive the tunes strongly! Other instrumentation includes loads of keyboards – especially clavinet-type riffs that fit the group's 70s cop/crime mode perfectly – and titles include "Uh Ah Brrr", "Thank You & Goodbye", "New Delhi Deli", "New York New York", "Italian Band From BBQ", "Rain On Concrete", and "A Massacre At Dawn". Curtis Clark with Louis MoholoDreams Deferred ... CD
Nimbus, 1993. New Copy ... $9.99
2 great sessions from pianist Curtis Clark – a crucially overlooked player, and one with a style that bridges the modernist gap between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor! The first 5 tracks on the set are all (coincidentally enough!) tunes by Monk – played with a trio that includes Wayne Dockery on bass and Louis Moholo on drums, in a style that really changes up the mood of the original compositions, yet still keeps all their angular charm. Titles include "Misterioso", "Monk's Mood", "Light Blue", and the great "Worry Later/San Francisco Holiday". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD feature the trio with Dockery and Moholo, expanded to a septet with players that include Tristan Honsiger on cello, Felicity Provan on trumpet, and Tobias Delius on tenor sax. These tunes are nearly all originals by Clark, and some of them are a fair bit straighter than his other work of the time – almost in a soulbop mode on the best numbers. Titles include "Sean", "Two Shadows In The Mist", "Nelson", and "Diaphane". CD

Muse, 1980. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A great example of the Muse Records charm of altoist Richie Cole – bop-fired creativity at its peak, mixed with some added contemporary elements to keep things fresh! In this case, Richie's horn takes on some key bop classics, but also opens up a bit with vocalsits too – Eddie Jefferson on versions of "Hi Fly", "Relaxin At Camarillo", and "Waiting For Waits" – the latter of which also features Tom Waits as well! The Manhattan Transfer make some subtle guest appearances too – but in ways that are much more restrained than their own albums, really leaving most room for Richie's horn. Bruce Forman plays guitar and Dick Hindman piano – and titles include "Hi Fly", "Relaxin At Camarillo", "Hooray For Hollywood", "I Love Lucy", "Malibu Breeze", "Waiting For Waits", and "Tokyo Rose Sings The Hollywood Blues". Not Two (Poland), 2016. New Copy ... $13.99
Bold work from a group of improvisers who really know each others' strengths – maybe no surprise, as most of them have been playing together in this lineup for years – Joe Fonda on bass, Gebhard Ullman on tenor and bass clarinet, and Michael Jefry Stevens on piano – joined by relative newcomer Dieter Ulrich on drums! Ulrich fits right into the sound perfectly – bursting boldly when the others do, hanging back with more tentative sonic energy at other points – always balanced with the same sort of understanding that makes the group work so well together, as they explode out from song ideas by each of the individual members. Titles include "The Bee", "Zeit Lupe", "Sal's Song", "Listen To Dr Cornel West", "Prism", and "Variations On A Master Plan (part 2)". CD

Chris Connor & Maynard FergusonTwo's Company ... CD
Roulette/Fresh Sound (Spain), Early 60s. Used ... $2.99
Despite any prejudice you might have against Maynard Ferguson, he actually does a damn good job backing up Chris Connor's lovely voice on this record – probably because his band is super-hip, and includes players like Jaki Byard, Joe Farrell, and Rufus Jones. Connor is in fine icy form, as usual – and it's nice to hear her get a bit more jazzy backing than some of the more somber arrangements you'll hear on her Atlantic sessions. Titles include "The Wind", "Send For Me", "Where Do You Go?", and "Deep Song". CD

Vanguard, 1972. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A fantastic record from guitarist Larry Coryell – one that maybe has him shedding some of the more rockish tendencies of his roots, while finding the way forward in a searing, searching style of funky jazz! There's almost a Flying Dutchman sort of righteousness to the record – as Larry mixes the ever-increasing sharpness of his guitar with great soprano sax from Steve Marcus – who himself may well be topping performances on albums under his own name. Bottom energy is driven strongly by Mervin Bronson on bass and Harry Wilkinson on drums – and the group also features lots of great keyboards from Mike Mandel – playing "electric piano with fuzz wah"! Wonderfully freewheeling improvisations between a duo we've never heard before – saxophonist George Davidson and drummer Mitchell King – really pulling out some old school energy in this series of well-done free jazz duets! Davidson sometimes has a deeper current of soul in his horn, which almost evokes an earlier ESP version of avant jazz – and King has this way of building up formations on the drum kit, then setting them off in increasing intensity – which is often well-balanced by the grounded explorations of the tenor! Very nice work by a duo who follow the best sides of their inspirations – on titles that include "In Praise Of Fakirs", "Message To Eden Ango", "Aurora Vibration", "Mixed Elixer", "Madzub's Logic", and "Where Is Dhat". Betty DavisThey Say I'm Different ... LP
Just Sunshine/Light In The Attic, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... About October 16, 2020 (delayed)
Killer work from Betty Davis – one of the most impressive female funk talents ever! If you ever needed a definition of funk, this record may well be it – snapping drums, sharp-edged guitars, and sex-filled basslines that slink and slide all over the bottom of the grooves – a perfect setting for Betty's incredible vocals – which themselves have a smokey, raspy quality that's completely unique! At times, Davis is almost speaking, but at others she's practically screaming – belting out the lyrics in a way that makes you feel like you're sharing some space with her at the end of the bar as she gets more and more wound up about issues and people who are on her mind. And as if the vocals weren't enough, the backings are incredible too – filled with drum breaks and basslines that few other albums can match – all wrapped around badass tunes that include "Shoo-B-Doop & Cop Him", "He Was A Big Freak", "70's Blues", "Git In There", "Special People", "Don't Call Her No Tramp", and "Your Mama Wants Ya Back". A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... $9.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". CD is beautifully done – with full notes in the great Lion tradition – and bonus tracks that include "Sem Nada" and "18.30 Parte 1". CD

Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Karen AbbottSin In The Second City – Madams, Ministers, Playboys & The Battle For American's Soul ... Book
Random House, 2007. New Copy ... $4.99 17.00
Our fair city of Chicago has always been a pretty sleazy place – but back at the start of the 20th century, there was a higher kind of sex trade going on – one that featured high class houses of ill-reputed, and well-educated hookers – which led to a lot more crossing over between the brothels and the boardrooms! This well-done book looks at a very specific time in the city's history – a point when Chicago was really coming into its own – both as a city of industry and a city of sin – a place where reformers rubbed shoulders with gangsters, as part of the new urban experiment. The book does a great job of tracing this larger narrative, in a way that's hardly as salacious as you might expect – a different sort of snapshot than the Devil In The White City. 364 pages, softcover. Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

John AbercrombieNight ... LP
ECM, 1984. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The airy tones of guitarist John Abercrombie find a bit of a different setting here – a slight change from some of his earlier ECM albums, but still with a relatively open vibe overall! Jan Hammer's in the group on keyboards, but sounds thankfully very different than his Miami Vice fame – almost reminding us of his earliest jazz years in German, especially when he hits a nice groove – which is often echoed by strong tenor lines from Michael Brecker, whose voice might be the strongest in the set overall – although again, nicely different than his more famous material. Jack DeJohnette handles drums for the quartet – and titles include "Night", "3 East", "Look Around", "Four On One", and "Believe You Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Barbara AcklinLove Makes A Woman ... LP
Brunswick, 1968. Sealed ... $14.99
Barbara Acklin's first album – and a landmark of Chicago soul that firmly established Acklin as one of the city's best writers and new female singers! Acklin had a classy sound that was different than some of her raw soul sisters in the city – but although she was classy, she also didn't have any of that little girl stuff that you might hear from singers like Denice Chandler or Barbara Mason. Instead, she had an approach that mixed a real soul vocal with more sophisticated material, in a manner that worked well with the evolving blueprint for the Brunswick Chisoul sound. Carl Davis and Eugene Record do a perfect job producing Barbara's songs, all forged nicely into the loping soul groove that set Chicago apart from other cities in the late 60s. Includes the big title track "Love Makes A Woman" – plus "Be By My Side", "Your Sweet Loving", "Come and See Me Baby", and a great cover of "The Look of Love"! LP, Vinyl record album

George AdamsParadise Space Shuttle ... LP
Timeless, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. The rest of the group is filled with similar spiritual energy – and includes Ron Burton on piano, Don Pate on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Azzedin Weston on percussion. The style is nicely different than some of George's later work with Don Pullen – maybe a bit more straightforward, but in a great way that really unlocks his voice as a leader – and titles include "Funk A Roonie Peacock", "Metamorphosis for Mingus", "Paradise Space Shuttle", and "Intentions". George Adams/Don PullenDon't Lose Control ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Double Arc Jake", "Autumn Song", "Don't Lose Control", "Remember", and "Places & Faces". LP, Vinyl record album

Impro (France), 1977. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A really great setting for Pepper Adams – a rare European live date that has his baritone sax matched with the mighty talents of the George Arvanitas trio! Arvanitas' piano is always great, but we especially love the rhythm work here by bassist Jacky Samson and drummer Charles Saudrais – two amazing players who help Pepper find a groove on the record that's quite different than usual. The set begins with the 11 minute "Bossa Noveau" – a Brazilian-styled groover that reminds us a lot of the Samson/Saudrais work with Marco Di Marco and Chris Woods – and the same sort of vibe follows on the 17 minute "Min & Maj Blues" too. "Ephemera" and "Body & Soul" are a bit straighter, but totally great. LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1962. Near Mint- ... $8.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. An all-star set from Cannonball Adderley – a hip standout in his pre-Capitol years for Riverside! The "plus" in the title is pianist Wynton Kelly – who works with the group wonderfully on 4 of the album's 6 tracks – bringing in a slightly different feel on the keys than you might get from some of Cannon's other albums – slightly lyrical at points, in a really great way. Rhythm is from the rock-solid team of Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums – and of course Nat Adderley's also in the group on cornet, and Victor Feldman rounds out the ensemble on vibes, but also plays piano on the tracks that don't feature Kelly. The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Air10,000 Hz Legend ... LP
Astralwerks/Parlophone, 2001. Sealed 2LP ... $29.99
A great early 00s effort from Air – bravely moving towards a deeper, trippier sound! For 10,000 Hz Legend, they wisely don't try to replicate the comparably effervescent vibe of their late 90s classic Moon Safari. On some level, they're still working with some of moodier textures of their work on the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, particularly in the warm, but slightly eerie melodies, but there's a much more expansive vibe here. They're still recognizable as sensual, electronics embracing avant pop composers of Moon Safari, but there's a lot more deftly layered influences here, from prog, to psych, to disco – and it's a great beginning-to-end listen. Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... About December 10, 2020
Not the Chicago group of AACM fame, but a completely different Japanese combo from the 70s – a very cool outfit who are equally avant in their approach – and work together in a very spiritual blend of acoustic and electric sounds! The album features one long track, improvised in a very organic way – so that the spare sounds build up into these parts rich in meaning, but still with plenty of sharp edges – based on work from Yasuo Shimura on flute, amplified soprano sax, Arp, and radio; Renkichi Hayashi on guitar, ring modulator, and other effects; Nobuyoshi Ino on electric and acoustic bass, Turkish guitar, and tape recorder; Hiroshi Murakami on drums and percussion; and Yuji Imamura on amplified and acoustic tabla, plus other percussion. The sound's as compelling as the instrumental lineup – and the album's comprised of one long jamming track "Air (parts 1 & 2)", with a groove that ranges from funky and break-oriented, to wild and free out-oriented soloing. A collection of tracks from Japan's Akakage – a really groovy little group with a stripped-down, retro-styled sound – one that's almost an extension of the Readymade groove of the 90s, but which has a more straightforward approach! The tunes are playful without being annoyingly so – and make good use of a wide palette of 60s references pulled from jazz, bossa, and soundtrack work – but also manage to maintain their own feel pretty strongly. The CD brings together tracks from the group's albums More More More and Would You Like Akakage – and features 14 titles that include "Do You Know Me (special edit)", "How Are You (short)", "Kiss Me Baby", "Little A's Thing", "She Is A Pretty Girl", "Impression", "Lodgers", and "The Tide Is High". Two beautiful long tracks from Japanese pianist Shoji Aketagawa – recording here with just he bass of Hiroshi Yoshino for accompaniment – in a style that mixes some of the deeper tones of Shoji's straighter records with an approach that's maybe looser and more improvised overall! Parts of the album almost feel as if Cecil Taylor were trying to step into Erroll Garner territory – hitting moody ballads, but breaking out with freer moments on the keys – while others are maybe a bit warmer, and have some of that unusual full piano resonance that always makes these Aketa's Disk recordings by Aketagawa sound so different than most other Japanese piano recordings of the period. The set features two long tracks, both nice and open! CD

Shoji AketagawaFly Me To The Moon ... CD
Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $18.99
An indie piano jazz treasure from the Japanese scene of the 70s – originally issued on the Aketa's Disk record, and with a sound that's a bit different than some of the bigger-label piano trio albums of the time! There's a real edge here – a harder sound on Aketagawa's keys than some of his contemporaries, even though things are relatively straight and swinging – as if Shoji knows the farther reaches of the avant spectrum, and manages to fold them into long, open groovers with the help of a trio that features Koichi Yamazaki on bass and Takashi Miyasaka on drums! Shoji also vocalizes a bit behind his piano – not singing, but kind of the energetic sounds that you'd hear from better-known pianists, like Erroll Garner or Keith Jarrett – in a similar tradition of enthusiasm along with their work on the keys. Titles include "Aketa's Blues", "Fly Me To The Moon", "There Is No Greater Love", and "Obachama Ote O Douzo". CD

A rare treasure from the Aketa's Disk label – one of the hipper Japanese jazz imprints of the 70s, and a great showcase here for the mighty piano talents of Shoji Aketagawa! There's something very unusual about the piano that Shoji is playing here – as it's got a tonal quality that almost feels like an old upright, but a wider scope of sound that you'd here from a grand piano – a very resonant vibe that seems to encompass many different strands of jazz at once, both older and modern, with a flair that maybe evokes the similar spirit of Jaki Byard – but which, in Aketagawa's hands, comes across with very personal results. A slightly different album than usual from pianist Shoji Aketagawa, but one that still follows strongly in the best tradition of his offbeat gems for the Aketa's Disk label! This set has Shoji co-credited on piano and vocals – the latter of which aren't really sung lyrics, but maybe more sub-verbal expressions done alongside his bold work on the piano – almost an expansion of the kind of grunts you'd hear on older recordings by Erroll Garner, but taken into an even more pronounced position – so that they're often strong enough to become part of the melodic makeup of the tune! The group also features bass from Koichi Yamazaki, and drums from Takashi Miyasaka and Kenichi Kameyama – on titles that include "African Dream", "Footprints", "Yamazaki Blues", "Kameyama Blues", and "Dear Old Stockholm". A hokey title and cover, but a great little record – a lesser-known gem from the Toshiko Akioshi big band, recorded in the mid 80s for Japanese release! Toshiko's still working strongly with reedman Lew Tabackin here – and as always, the sound of the reeds really make the record – not only on the bold ensemble passages, but also on the snakey, well-crafted solos that slide out of the fuller arrangements – letting Lew, Frank Wess, and Jim Snidero contribute some really great work on the longer tracks. One of the lesser-known albums in the great run of big band records cut by pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set with a bit of a difference, too – as this time out, Tabackin wrote all the tunes, although Toshiko still handles all the arrangements and orchestrations! Some of the numbers are a bit shorter than on some of the other TALT group recordings – and it might be our imagination, but they also seem to have some more pronounced reed solos – moments that really remind us what a great saxophonist Tabackin can be, and a master of the powerful, yet understated emotional moment. A really experimental set from the Italian scene of the 70s – an album that might easily fit in the great legacy of albums on the Cramps label, even though it was issued by the artist himself! The approach is very unique – as the record mostly features organ and keyboard lines from Giacomo Mino Di Martino – a musician with roots in prog, but who'd also discovered much more avant, creative territory over the years – partly in collaboration with his wife, actress Terra Di Benedetto, who provides some unusual vocalizations on the set! The whole thing is very different than anything we can think of – at times, almost like some of the better melodic moments of the UK industrial underground of the mid 80s, but also with some of the starker qualities that mark the Italian avant scene of the time the album was issued. Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". A pivotal album for Mose Allison – and one of the first records to ever feature his voice, even if only on one track! During the 50s, Allison was mostly known for his work as a bop-styled pianist – on records by Stan Getz and others – but at the end of the decade, he really returned to his roots, and began to forge a New Orleans-styled approach to jazz that had lots of bluesy inflections and a much earthier sensibility. This album offers a bit of both Allison sides of the fence – some straighter piano jazz with a trio that features Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free on drums, but also some rootsier numbers that come off nicely. Mose sings on "I Got A Right To Cry", and other titles include "Ramble", "Saritha", "Ingenue", "Old Devil Moon", "The Minstrels", "Old Man John", and "The Kissin Bug". Justo AlmarioInterlude ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The greatest album ever from reedman Justo Almario – and one of the most obscure sets to ever come out on the Uno Melodic label of Roy Ayers! Roy Ayers produced the whole thing, and handled arrangements with Justo – and the whole thing feels a lot like a jazzy instrumental take on Roy's own music of the time – but with a focus more on the tenor and soprano sax work of Almario! Other players on the set include Mudbone on piano, Greg Moore on guitar, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet – and the record's got nicely spiritual currents mixed with very soulful fusion – a superb blend throughout, and very different than the slicker recordings that Justo put out in later years. Titles include the Roy Ayers tunes "Sho You Right", "Interlude", and "Aquarian Mood" – plus Almario originals "Seventh Avenue", "I'm The One That Loves You", and "Sir John". LP, Vinyl record album

AlzoAlzo (aka Looking For You) ... LP
Bell, 1972. Very Good ... $11.99
A really unique little record – soulful, folksy, and with a slight jazzy tinge at times – and the first solo album cut by one half of the Alzo & Udine Latin soul duet who recorded for Mercury in the late 60s! This solo album has a bit of a different flavor than Alzo's work with Udine, but the singing and instrumentation have a lot of nice jazzy changes – and the whole thing skips along with the same earthy, personal feel that made the earlier album so great. The whole thing's sort of in between Colin Blunstone and Nick Drake, but with a bit more of a soulful vibe – and an ultra-hip mix of styles that makes us wonder why Alzo wasn't hailed as the hippest thing going at the time. Bob (Multiplication Rock) Dorough arranged and produced, with a very groovy style – and tracks include "Country", "That's Alright", "Without You Girl", "Some People", "Lookin' For You", and "You Know Me, I Know You". Rodrigo Amado with Peter EvansFreedom Principle ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... $9.99
The title definitely lives up to the sound of the record – a really loose, free session from a quartet that includes strong work from both trumpeter Peter Evans and tenorist Rodrigo Amado – the latter of whom leads the group! All tracks are long, and build with a nice degree of energy – one that gets back to the "freedom principle" generation between the ESP and loft jazz years – when spontaneous creativity like this was really in action. All four members contribute equally to shape the sound of the performance – and the group also features Miguel Mira on cello and Garbirel Ferrandini on drums. Titles include "Pepper Packed", "Shadows", and "The Freedom Principle". CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsBlack Cat ... LP
Prestige, 1971. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
One of the great funky albums that Gene Ammons cut for Prestige at the start of the 70s – quite different than his earlier work for the label, and a very different showcase for his tenor genius! The whole lineup here is amazing – a quintet that features heavy drums from Idris Muhammad, piano and Fender Rhodes from Harold Mabern, bass from Ron Carter, and some tremendously smoking guitar from the great George Freeman! Freeman goes nuts on the funky cut "The Black Cat" – and other tracks include "Jug Eyes", "Hi Ruth", "Something", and "Piece To Keep Away Evil Spirits". LP, Vinyl record album
(Purple label pressing. Cover has some wear, with aged masking tape along splitting top and bottom seams.)

Gene AmmonsGene Ammons All Star Sessions (aka Woofin & Tweetin) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, Early 50s. Used ... $4.99
A classic album from Gene Ammons – one that features the tenor legend at his prime, working in two different settings! The first batch has Ammons "battling" Sonny Stitt in a set of stuff that features hard twin tenors in the frontline, with the kind of cutting contests the two of them would perform live all over the country. Titles on that one include "Stringin The Jug", "New Blues Up & Down", and "You Can Depend On Me". The other side of the record features Ammons in one of those great Prestige open-ended groups – with crack players like Art Farmer, Lou Donaldson, and Freddie Redd – all soloing long and soulfully on two tracks – "Woofin & Tweetin" and "Juggernaut". CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsLate Hour Special ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... $18.99
Very nice album by Jug that often gets overlooked because it's comprised of 2 different sessions, and can't get the "historical" writeup of being a single significant moment in the studio. Some tracks – including "Lascivious" and "Soft Winds" – are with a tight quartet that features the very soulful piano of Patti Brown. The others are with a larger group that has a whole horn section backing Jug up. The sound's a bit unusual for his records of the time, but it also gives him a great platform to work from, and he wails out of the group on his solos. Other titles include "Lullaby Of The Leaves" and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". CD

Gene Ammons & Sonny StittDig Him (aka We'll Be Together Again) ... LP
Argo, 1961. Very Good ... $8.99
Nothing fancy – but some great straight-ahead blowing from Stitt and Jug! The album's a quintet session, with John Houston piano, Buster Williams bass, and George Brown drums providing all the rhythm. But the real focus is on the twin-sax frontline – with Sitt taking up the alto on a few numbers, but mostly blowing tenor head to head with Jug. Recorded in 1961 during Jug's great year of contract-breaking – and issued later in the 60s by Prestige under a different title. Titles include "A Mess", "Water Jug", "New Blues Up & Down", "Red Sails In The Sunset", and "A Pair Of Red Pants". LP, Vinyl record album
(Grey label Argo pressing with deep groove.)

Roman AndrenJuanita & Beyond – Live Studio Sessions ... CD
Ajabu/P-Vine (Japan), 2008. Used ... $11.99
Incredible work from Roman Andren – a genre-defying set that's filled with warmth, soul, and imagination – all recorded live in the studio with a really organic feel! The music's a cross between a few different jazz, Afro, and Latin modes – played by a group that features Roman on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, with tenor, flute, trumpet, guitar, and some especially great rhythms – lively percussion that brings a bit of a Latin or Brazilian flavor to the music at points, and pushes the set with some great club jazz energy. There's a bit of vocals on the record too – sung by Susanne Ottebring or Miriam Aida – and Fredrik Kronkvist also plays a bit of guest alto sax too. The whole thing's wonderful – a warmly seductive album that really grabs us from the get-go – filled with wonderful tunes that include "Long Ago & Far Far Away", "Felaflight", "Nawana", "Bumblebee", "Let's Live Forever Love", "It's Nice", and "O Mundo E Seu". CD

Antonio Carlos & Jocafi20 Super Successos ... CD
Polydisc (Brazil), 1998. Used ... $6.99
This great Brazilian funky samba team offer up a nicely re-recorded batch of 20 of their best tracks ever! The quality of the work is very good, with nice spare production that allows plenty of room for the duo's choppy guitar work, and their deeply soulful vocals. It's a shame that none of these tracks are currently available in the original versions – but this set's a good enough compensation, and features the tracks "Teimosa", "Voce Abusou", "Minhas Razoes", "Terceiro Ato", "Mudei De Ideia", and "Glorioso Santo Antonio". AppleApple A Day (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Page One/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99
There's an apple on the cover, and an apple in the name – and this British group Apple maybe owes a bit to late 60s Beatles material on Apple Records – but only in the way that they both had greatness recorded during the same time period! Apple are maybe a bit more lean, with some of the mix of psych and beat group elements that we love in The Creation – tunes that are short, focused, and catchy – but which also pack plenty into a small space too – maybe also like the energy of The Move at their start! The production is great – lots of nice stuff happening around the edges, which sounds especially great on the strong piano lines that dominate many tunes – really making the group sound a bit different than other groups that lead with the guitar – although Apple has plenty of greatness in that aspect too! Titles include "Let's Take A Trip Down The Rhine", "Doctor Rock", "The Otherside", "Mr. Jones", "Queen Of Hearts Blues", "Rock Me Baby", "Buffalo Billycan", "Psycho Daisies", and "Pretty Girl I Love You". CD features bonus tracks – mono single versions of "Buffalo Billycan", "The Otherside", "Doctor Rock", and "Let's Take A Trip Down The Rhine". CD

Ely ArcoverdeO Orgao Que Canta Sambas Vol 2 ... CD
RGE/Discobertas (Brazil), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the weirdest, wildest organ work we've ever heard – and that's coming from folks with a record collection stuffed with Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, and even Sun Ra! Ely Arcoverde is a bit in the territory of Brazilian 60s organ contemporary Walter Wanderley – especially in the way that he mixes his melodies with samba rhythms – but he's also got a very different approach on the keyboard, and often uses the instrument to "sing" – in ways that are very much like the "canta" promised in the title! At some points, we'd swear that Ely was almost using an early variation of a vocoder – not that the sound is 80s, but that he gets this really cool "voice" out of the instrument – as it moves between percussion, occasional chorus vocals, and some nicely jazzy instrumentation. Titles include "O Morro Nao Tem Vez", "Cidade Maravilhosa", "Madame Fulana De Tal", "Samba Da Minha Terra", "Canta Maria", "Tem Bobo Pra Tudo", and "Agua Com Areia". CD

Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". Louis ArmstrongLouis Armstrong & His Friends ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Boplicity (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Louis Armstrong hits the Flying Dutchman label – and unlocks a whole new spiritual side of his talents – a mode that's quite different than some of his crossover pop of the 60s! The style here has a bit of righteous elements in the lyrics, and lots of spiritual jazz in the backings – with full arrangements from Oliver Nelson – who heads up a dream lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor, and either Chico Hamilton or Pretty Purdie on drums! Even more amazing is a guest appearance from Leon Thomas – who sings on a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Other tunes are just as hip – and include "The Black Cat Has 9 Lives", "His Father Wore Long Hair", "Give Peace A Chance", and "We Shall Overcome". Must be heard to be believed! CD
