Eddie HarrisExodus To Jazz ... LP
Vee Jay, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... $4.99
One of the true hit jazz albums of the 60s, and a record that's still pretty darn incredible today! Who'd have thought that a jazz recording of the theme to the film "Exodus" could have been such a hit? It was, and the way Eddie handled it forever transformed the face of jazz. Eddie was nicely poised between the harder soul jazz camps and the freer spiritual jazz underground that was operating in Chicago and Detroit in the 60s – and with his unique combo that had Joe Dorio on guitar, he transformed the song into a great groove that matched the other excellent material that he was laying down at the time. This record's a gem, which is often rare for such a jazz "hit" – and it includes loads of great tracks like "AM Blues", "Velocity", "Alicia", and "ATC". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing with Audiomatrix stamp. Vinyl is double labeled on Side 1, and has some noisy residue on Side 2. Cover has a Stereo sticker on front, and some notes in pen and name in marker in back.)

Lothar & The Hand PeopleCome Along – The Exodus 1966 (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beat Rocket, 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Lothar & The Hand People gave the world one of the greatest psych albums ever issued by Capitol Records – but this set of earlier recordings shows the group in a very different light – raw, noisy, and very garagey – much more in the territory of The Seeds or The Sonics! The recording is live, but feels more like it was captured in a small basement room than a larger rock club – as there's a very forward sound to the whole thing, as if the group were trying to rip the performance space out of its foundations, while they work their own rough-edged magic on tunes that are familiar, but which sound very different in this setting – a perfect illustration of the genius of garage at its best! The guitar lines are wonderful – and titles include "If I Have To Choose", "Walking The Dog", "Baby Please Don't Go", "Come Along", "Who's Been Talking", "Gloria", "That's Another Story", and "Nobody Knows". Bob MarleyExodus ... LP
Island, 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout. And sure, some of the cuts here are some of Bob's biggest hits ever – but heard in the context of the core album, they've got a lot more righteous power than when they're cribbed for a commercial or a TV soundtrack. Titles include "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Exodus", "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Island pressing with Sterling stamp in the embossed cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, a small mark from sticker removal, and light smudges.)

✨✧ Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". Monty AlexanderYard Movement (2021 Japan Record Day Release) ... LP
Island/Universal (Japan), 1995. New Copy (reissue)... On November 3, 2021 (delayed)
A great little 90s album from pianist Monty Alexander – done for the short-lived Jamaica Jazz segment of Island Records, and in a mode that's a bit different than some of the straighter jazz records that Alexander had been cutting for years! Monty's Caribbean roots were never a secret, and although they came out in musical modes over the years, this record may present them the most strongly – although with instrumentation that also echoes some 90s electric jazz elements too. The set features Alexander on piano, keyboards, and even a bit of melodica – and the great Ernest Ranglin is in the group on guitar – on titles that include "Moonlight City", "Crying", "Love Notes", "Sneaky Steppers", "Regulator", and a cool "Exodus" medley of both the original film theme, and the Bob Marley song of the same name! Sublime Frequencies, 2021. New Copy ... $22.99
A contemporary album, but one with a very ancient vibe – recorded in Cairo on a mix of percussion and stringed instruments, and set to vocals that have a wonderful way of cascading over the grooves! From what we can tell, there's no electricity in the instrumentation – which furthers the timeless qualities of the music – and even though the language of the lyrics are beyond us, they're handled with a soulful style that's very transcendent – as is the instrumentation! Titles include "Aden", "The Exodus", "The South", "Manbarani", "You Don't Mind", and "The Land Of Exiles". LP, Vinyl record album

Grant GreenSunday Mornin' (non RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $11.99
A beautiful little session from one of the greatest guitarists ever! The album's part of Blue Note's tendency to "churchify" Grant Green on some albums – giving his guitar a gospelly groove that has some nicely soulful connotations – but it's also a record that's maybe the strongest of that bunch, as it's got this approach that's loose and open – and which has this fantastic flow that's aided by the piano of Kenny Drew! Drew is the equal star on this set – and the longer tunes on the record really allow for plenty of open solo space – and the whole thing shines with Drew's piano matching lines with Green's strung-out single-note solos. The groove is pretty hard, and the recording quality keeps the whole thing nice and lively – thanks also to work from Ben Tucker on bass and Ben Dixon on drums. Titles include "Sunday Mornin", "Come Sunrise", "Exodus", and "Freedom March". CD features the bonus track "Tracin Tracey". CD

Eddie HarrisEddie Harris Goes To The Movies ... LP
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Forget the title – which sounds like a bit of a gimmick – as this is a fine fine Eddie Harris album! After the success that Vee Jay had with Eddie Harris' huge hit version of "Exodus", they cut this album of Eddie playing movie themes – like "Green Dolphin Street", "Laura", "Moonglow", and "Secret Love", plus a few standards like "These Foolish Things", and "The More I See You". Dick Marx handled the arrangements – and the overall sound is slicker than Eddie's "Exodus", as his solos are laid out over larger string arrangements by Dick Marx, but it's not without some charms – especially because Eddie's tone at this point is amazing, filled with little tricks and turns that make just about anything he plays sound great! ✨✧ Jimmy ScottSource ... LP
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A unique moment from the legendary Jimmy Scott – a one-off album cut for Atlantic Records – recorded after his initial 50s fame, and decades before he'd finally get his due, much later in his life! The album's got a style that's a bit more mature than Scott's initial sides – a bit more grown up in approach, even though Jimmy's still got that really unique light tone to his vocals – and arranged by Arif Mardin and William Fischer in a hip blend of jazz and strings – with a slow-moving vibe that's completely mesmerizing. The core instrumentation is by a group that includes Junior Mance on piano, Billy Butler on guitar, and Ron Carter on bass – and titles include "Our Day Will Come", "I Wish I Knew", "This Love Of Mine", and a very moody version of "Exodus". This was the follow-up LP to Billy Stewart's huge single of Gershwin's "Summertime", and it's got a similar approach of "funky soul takes on American pop music standards". "Summertime" isn't on the album, but all the tracks have a sound that falls in the same mode – with fantastic vocal pyrotechnics from Billy, and tight arrangements by Phil Wright that both groove hard, but have a sophisticated classy edge. Titles include "Temptation", "Who Can I Turn To", "Let's Fall In Love", "Exodus", "Fly Me to the Moon", and "Secret Love". Also includes a great version of "Every Day I Have the Blues", with a nice hard funky drum intro! LP, Vinyl record album

VariousJazz In Jamaica – The Coolest Cats From The Alpha Boy's School ... LP
Honey Pie, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99
Jazz in Jamaica, and a whole lot more – as the set brings together some key moments when the music was really shifting down in Kingston – still years before ska, rocksteady, and reggae, but with some definite differences in the way things come across! The Alpha Boy's School is a reference to the background of some of the key players – names that blossomed even more strongly in later years of Jamaican recording, with some who even achieved great fame recording over in the UK and Europe as well. But these are the giants at the start of their career – stepping out on some really great takes on more familiar jazz standards, but with a nicely inventive approach – as you'll hear on tunes that include "I'll Remember April" and "St Thomas" from Cecil Lloyd, "I Love Paris" by Lennie Hibbert, "Exodus" by Ernest Ranglin, "Rhythm" by Wilton Gaynair, "It Happnes" by The Workshop with Don Drummond, "Old Devil Moon" by Lance Hayward with Totlyn Jackson, "Let's Fall In Love" by Eric Grant, and "The Answer" by The Workshop with Tommy McCook. ✨✧ Duke PearsonAngel Eyes ... CD
Jazz Line/Muzak (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare pre-Blue Note session from Duke Pearson – very mellow, very soulful, and with a quality that's unlike most of his later work! The album's a trio side, recorded for the Jazzline label, and it features Pearson on piano, Thomas Howard on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums – the last of whom brings in some wonderfully lyrical lines on the kit, very much in the manner of the free, dancing rhythms used on records with Donald Byrd. Pearson's piano has a sharper edge than usual – these dark, moody tones that are totally great – almost a rougher version of his later sound, with a great sense of depth. Bob Cranshaw's bass and Walter Perkins' drums are featured on one number – and titles include a killer take on "Jeannine", plus "Say You're Mine", "Le Carrousel", "Bags Groove", and "Exodus". CD
