✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingFace To Face (UK pressing with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Big Break (UK), 1983. Used ... $8.99
Evelyn Champagne King will always be most popularly remembered for her massive disco pop crossover hits of the late 70s, but she progressed really nicely throughout the 80s, keeping up with the evolving dancefloor soul sounds of the times – and Face To Face is a lean, clubby electro soul and funk flavored set with catchy hooks and sweet vocals by Evelyn! The production duties are split almost evenly between the team of Leon Sylvers, Foster Sylvers & Joey Gallo and Andre Cymone – both of which embrace synth and programming, with Cymone's coming off a bit clubbier – but all of it nicely frames Evelyn's lovely vocals. Includes "Action", "Face To Face", "Shake Down", "Telll Me Something Good", "Don't It Feel Good", "Makin' Me So Proud", "Givin' You My Love (What Cha Gonna Do With It)", "Teenager" and "Let's Get Crazy". This UK pressing has 6 bonus tracks: "Shake Down (12" M&M dub, single mix, 12" M&M dance remix)", "Teenager (12" remix, single mix)", and "Action (single mix)". CD

✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingFlirt ... CD
EMI, 1988. Used ... $6.99
A flirty little record from Evelyn Champagne King – one that's got a very different groove than her disco-styled records in the 70s – one that's very firmly in the mid 80s modes that Manhattan Records were using with other singers at the time! Beats are bigger than before, but the keyboards are tuned down a bit more – which leaves lots of space for Evelyn to open up strongly on top of the grooves – amidst lots of sweet 80s soul modes laid down by producers Leon Sylvers, Ron Kersey, and Wah Wah Watson. Titles include "Flirt", 'You Can Turn Me On", "Kisses Don't Lie", "Hold On To What You've Got", "Before The Date", "Whenever You Touch Me", and "When your Heart Says Yes". CD

✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingMusic Box (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/FTG, 1979. Used ... $7.99
Niceness from Evelyn King to cap the end of the 70s! She's really in great form here – stepping out with some fully clubby backings, and working with the mighty T-Life, who's really got a great ear for her groove! The style's a bit less disco than previous albums – some simpler soul at points, mixed with other upbeat modes that hearken a bit more towards the sound of the dancefloor in the early 80s – almost a precursor to that decade's groove at points. Evelyn's vocals are proudly soaring throughout – never too over the top, and always right on the money – and tracks include "Music Box", "I Think My Heart Is Telling", "Out There", "It's OK", "No Time For Fooling Around", and "Make Up Your Mind". This FTG edition has 4 bonus tracks: "Music Box (12" Version)", "Out There (12" Version)", "Make Up Your Mind (12" Version)" and "Out There (7" Version)". CD

✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingSmooth Talk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Big Break (UK), 1977. Used ... $9.99
Wonderfully smooth soul from Evelyn Champagne King – one of her real standouts from the early days, and a tremendous collaboration with producer/arranger T Life! The sound here is upbeat and catchy, but never too poppy – done with a slight hint of that groove that King would hit more famously in the 80s, but served up here with a deeper sense of warmth, and a slightly more laidback feel. King is classy without being cloying – just like a sip of the right sort of champagne – and T Life's backings often have a slight undercurrent of funk. Titles include the club classic "Shame" – plus "Smooth Talk", "Til I Come Off The Road", "Dancin, Dancin, Dancin", "Nobody Knows", "We're Going To A Party", and "The Show Is Over". CD features bonus tracks too – including "I Don't Know If It's Right (single)", "I Don't Know If It's Right (12" disco)", "Shame (single)", and "Shame (12" disco mix)". CD

✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingCall On Me (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/FTG, 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful gem from Evelyn Champagne King – her third effort with the great producer T Life, who always helped bring out the most soulful elements in King's music! Life's got a way of grooving, but never going for modes that are too easily commercial – still lots of disco and club in the mix, but with more than enough space for Evelyn to really stretch out and be her own woman on the vocals, too! This mix comes out especially well on some of the more midtempo groovers – which have this flourish and polish that's really wonderful – way beyond some of the cliches of King's contemporaries, and with a personal quality that really comes through right away. Some of these cuts include "Your Kind Of Loving" and "Call On Me" – both real standouts on the record – and other numbers include "Let's Get Funky Tonight", "I Need Your Love", "Universal Girl", "Bedroom Eyes", and "Just A Little Bit Of Love". CD features bonus tracks – "Let's Get Funky Tonight (12" mix)", plus "I Love You", "Is It Good", "Sweet Delight", and "Long Time Waiting On You". CD

VariousOld School Vol 3 ... CD
Thump, 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
While we think the low rider cover images on these compilations are pretty dumb and sort of inappropriate, the selection of tracks is better than decent, in a mainstream 80s sort of way: EWF "Let's Groove", Evelyn Champagne King "I'm In Love", Young & Company "I Like What You're Doing To Me", Carl Carlton "She's A Bad Mama Jama", Parliament "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", Barkays "Do It", Cameo "Shake Your Pants", Brick "Dusic", Gap Band "Early In The Morning" and "Humpin", Herbie Hancock 'Rock It", Ohio Players "Fire", Rick James 'Super Freak" and Kool & the Gang "Hollywood Swinging".
