✨✧ VariousRocking On The GG Beat 1970/1971 ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 24.99
A huge collection of work handled by producer Alvin GG Ranglin – initially a member of The Maytones, but an artist who gave a much stronger contribution to Jamaican music through his work in the studio! GG may not be as legendary a name as some of the other producers from the time, but as this set shows, his top-shelf work was a key part of the sound of early reggae – served up here in a massive amount of cuts issued by Trojan at the start of the 70s, 16 of which appear here on CD for the first time ever! As usual with Doctor Bird, not only is the track selection great, the whole thing is supported with really detailed notes that offer up the full story behind the music and the man who created it – in a package of 48 tracks in all, with work from The Slickers, Maytones, Ethiopians, Invaders, Cynthia & Irving, Maxie & Glen, Jah Huntley, Dennis Alcapone, Trevor Brown, Charlie Ace, Cynthia Richards, and others. ✨✧ VariousReggae Reggae/Pipeline (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Super-heavy reggae from the early days of Trojan Records – something that might come as a surprise if you just look at the image on the cover! That photo is from the cover of the first set on here – the Reggae Reggae collection, issued by Trojan in 1972, and a killer batch of work from producer Alvin GG Ranglin – who also handled all the material on the second collection, Pipeline – as both are presented here, along with a huge amount of bonus tracks, many of which appear on CD for the first time ever! There's a really wonderful overview of sounds and styles here – both vocal and instrumental tracks, and a few key numbers that really show the shifting sounds of reggae as the 70s were moving forward. Doctor Bird present both records in a much richer setting than the original vinyl – really focusing on Ranglin's work in the notes, and adding in 27 bonus tracks as well – for a whopping 51 titles in all. Includes work by Shorty Perry, Lloyd & Carey, GG All stars, Del Williams, The Maytones, Billy Dyce, Gary Ranglin, John Holt, U Roy, Dennis Brown, Bongo Herman, Max Romeo, Dennis Alcapone, The Untouchables, Cat Campbell, The Ethiopians, and others. ✨✧ Jimmy Cliff & OthersHarder They Come (2CD Deluxe Edition) ... CD
Island, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. In addition, you get another disc of bonus material, much of it recorded in the crucial years before the film's release, giving you a wonderful portrait of the Jamaican music scene at the time, a dozen and a half of the finest rocksteady and reggae jams of the day, including Desmond Dekker's "Israelites", The Ethiopians "Reggae Hit The Town", Dave & Ansel Collins "Double Barrel", Jimmy Cliff's "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah" and "Wonderful World, Beautiful People", The Maytals' "Do The Reggay" and "54-46 (That's My Number)", The Melodians "It's My Delight" and Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby". 30 tracks in all on this awesome 2 disc set, packaged up nicely with notes by Dave Katz, photos from the film and full lyrics and track notations! ✨✧ VariousStudio One Ska Fever – More Ska Sounds From Sir Coxone's Downbeat ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Forget everything you know about ska music from recent years – no Mighty Mighty cliches, no retro-styled clunkers, no two-toned sounds at all – just the real deal, the roots of the style, served up here in classic recordings that go right to the source! These are the cuts that started it all – and which still sound way better to our ears than any of the countless imitations that have been crafted over the years – played with a freshness and a sharp edge that recent recordings can never hope to touch! The music here is the roots of reggae crafted in the soil of Kingston – recorded by the legendary Studio One Records, with all the soulful undercurrents you'd find in the rocksteady generation as well. It's been a few years since Soul Jazz have served up a set of Jamaican grooves this tight – but it's been well worth the wait, given the track selection and always-stellar level of presentation from the label. Titles include "Live Good" by The Ethiopians, "Mr Talkative" by The Wailers, "There's A Reward" by Joe Higgs & Roy Wilson, "Ska La Parisienne" by The Skatalites, "Don't Try To Reach Me" by The Gaylads, "Gumma" by Lee Perry, "Freedom Sounds" by Soul Brothers, "You Won't See Me" by The Clarendonians, and "Old Rocking Chair" by Jakie Opel.
