✨✧ EsperantoEsperanto ... LP
Favorite (France), 1980. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare fusion set from the end of the 70s – recorded during a very hip stretch on the scene in Venezuela, at a time when so many musicians were pushing sounds forward in ways that were years ahead of their time! That's definitely the case here – as Esperanto have all these sonic qualities that link earlier South American jazz, especially Brazilian grooves, with elements that feel very different in terms of production and arrangement than so many other 70s work – certainly funky and groovy in all the right places, but with moments that come as a real surprise too! Keyboards are at the core, and guitar dances between rhythmic and solo moments – while soprano sax and other reed elements come into the mix to warm things up nicely. Titles include "Caucaguita", "Vereda Tropical", "Alegria", "Hermoso Dia", and "Cancion Para Un Osito De Peluche". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ EsperantoVegas ... LP
Favorite (France), 1981. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare jazzy set from the Venezuelan scene at the start of the 80s – but a record that's got a lot more of the warm soulful glow of the best Fantasy Records productions in the Bay Area a few years before – sophisticated in style, but also very down to earth – and with a lot of nice R&B-tinged elements amidst the jazz-based instrumentation! Some cuts are instrumental jazz funk, but there's also a bit of vocals at points – a balance that almost echoes some of the strongest work from Wayne Henderson and the At-Home Productions team. Titles include "Hollywood", "Kenny's Place", "Kailua", "Tell Me This Is Love", "Love Crusader", "Elle Est Tres Ellegant", and "Wishful Thinkin". LP, Vinyl record album

Victor Assis BrasilEsperanto ... LP
Quartin (Brazil), 1970. Sealed ... $19.99
An incredible album of jazz tracks by one of Brazil's greatest reed players of the 70s – the mighty Victor Assis Brasil – a free-thinking spirit who really took Brazilian jazz in bold new directions at the time! The record shows Victor absorbing a lot of post-Coltrane influences, and blending them with a tight approach to rhythm – laid down here by Dom Salvador on piano (and organ), Edison Lobo on bass, and Edson Machando on drums. The group is completed by Helio Delmiro on guitar, and Claudio Roditi plays trumpet on one track – but the real highlight is the amazing reed work by Brasil, which is filled with soul and warmth, plus a deep sense of exploration. The whole session was put together by Roberto Quartin in 1970 – and it's still extremely fresh today. Titles include "Children", "Gingerbread Boy", "Senegal", and "Marilia", which is a bonus track that wasn't on the original LP. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ryuichi SakamotoEsperanto ... LP
Midi/We Want Sounds (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of electronic work from Ryuichi Sakamoto – and a record that may well be reaching for the universal language promised in the title! The set's not nearly as pop-oriented as some of Sakamoto's other work from the time – mostly instrumental, and with a spirit that's like some of his best soundtrack material, and maybe a bit like some of the other minimalist work coming from Japan during the period – save for the fact that Sakamoto always brings in a bit more, and has some unusual sonic elements that lurk in the background and make for a nice amount of surprises! Titles include "A Carved Stone", "Angelic Penguins", "Rain Song", "Dolphins", "A Wongga Dance Song", "The Dreaming", "A Human Tube", and "Ulu Watu". LP, Vinyl record album

Kurt EllingLive In Chicago ... CD
Blue Note, 2000. Used ... $5.99
We think this guy's one of the best new jazz vocalist to emerge over the past decade, and this album – his 4th for Blue Note – is far and away his best! The album was recorded live at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub – with nice small combo backing by Laurence Hobgood, Rob Amster, and Michael Raynor, plus guest horn work by Von Freeman, Eddie Johnson, and Ed Peterson. Kahil El'Zabar also plays percussion, and Jon Hendricks joins in on vocals a bit. But the best part is Elling's voice – which is a sweet mix between Mark Murphy at his best, and earlier vocalese masters, like Hendricks or Joe Lee Wilson. The album features mostly straight-ahead jazz vocalizing – with little of the hipster monologues that have ruined other Elling albums – and it includes an incredible version of Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer", plus the cuts "Oh My God", "Esperanto", "My Foolish Heart", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and the King Pleasure classic "Don't Get Scared". A real treat – especially if you like Cleveland Watkiss' Green Chimneys album, or any of the good Mark Murphy recordings for Muse! CD

✨✧ Charlotte Adigery & Boris PupulTopical Dancer (black & white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Because (France), 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that's as striking as its cover – a set from a Belgian duo, but one who take on important issues on the global scene – delivered mostly in English, which gives the record a really universal sense of appeal! Their style is quite unique – almost an older mix of beats, electronics, and production touches – but used playfully, almost as if they're sprinkled in to offset some of the deeper currents of the lyrics – almost as a sly trick to bring you in to their political agenda. Titles include "Making Sense Stop", "It Hit Me", "Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche", "Mantra", "Haha", "Thank You", "Hey", and "Esperanto". LP, Vinyl record album
