✨✧ VariousTurkish Freakout – Psych Folk Singles 1969 to 1980 ... CD
Bouzouki Joe, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A full plate of funky freakout grooves from the Turkish scene – compiled one and all from 7-inch records made from the end of the 60s to the dawn of the 80s! It's a mix of psych folk, funk, more traditional buzzing strings and hypnotic melodies – pretty wonderful all the way! Turkey's been a fertile wonderland of psych era sounds for deep diggers the past few years, but the quality level varies. This is one of the great ones, both for the music and for thick booklet of notes with info on each track. A far reaching set stylistically, with western jazz influences played with Turkish instruments, dreamy folkish melodies, rawer garage style grooves, heavy rhythms and spacier gems! Titles include "Dokuz Sekiz" by Okay Temiz, "Cokertme" by Kardaslar, "Sevdigim" by Erkin Koray, "Hal Hal" by Baris Manco, "Iciyorum" by Ajda Pekkan, "Osman Whlivan" by Arif Sag, "Gunese Don Cicegim" by Ersen and more. Steeplechase (Denmark), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen has been the background force on countless jazz records over the years – and when he gets the chance to step into the spotlight as a leader, he always seems to bring a lot to the proceedings! Here, Pedersen exposes the qualities of his bass in all sorts of wonderful ways – sometimes spare and very melodic, sometimes with more force driving the group – a great lineup that includes David Liebman on tenor, soprano, and flute – plus John Scofield on guitar and Billy Hart on drums. Scofield and Pedersen have a way of resonating together wonderfully – and titles include "Future Child", "Evening Sound", "Clouds", and "Dancing On The Tables". LP, Vinyl record album

Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen & Sam JonesDouble Bass (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Two great bassists, working here together in a really fantastic setting – not as a spare duo, but also not lost in a too-large group as well – as the lineup features guitar from Philip Catherine and drums from Billy Higgins – both very sensitive players who let Sam Jones and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen take the lead! The basses move nicely between rhythm and melody – almost with a gypsy swing guitar inspiration – which is maybe echoed just a bit by Catherine, who is at his best here – a great straight jazz player without some of the gimmicks of other albums of the period. Higgins is, as always, a delight – and he gets help from Tootie Heath on percussion on two tracks too. Titles include "A Notion", "Giant Steps", "Au Privave", "Yesterdays", "Little Train", and "Miss Morgan". LP, Vinyl record album

Tele Music/Be With (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
There's plenty of the bass promised in the title – but that's what we'd expect, given that the great Guy Pedersen's bass appeared on countless wonderful French records over the years! Yet this set's also something really special, too – a chance for Guy to come out of the background, into the spotlight, and use his instrument in all these excellent ways that go way beyond simple timekeeping! The bass is the solo instrument on most numbers – both acoustic, and electrified acoustic – amidst other sweet sound library elements, including plenty of funky drums that make the album way tighter, way groovier than you might expect! Titles include "Bass Session", "Les Copains De La Basse", "Obsession Diabolique", "Percussion Bass", "Cosmic Bass", "Indian Pop Bass", and "Tension Nerveuse". LP, Vinyl record album

A trio of pop talents you'd normally find on TV – Paul Peterson and Shelly Fabares from the Donna Reed Show, plus James Darren, who'd also done some work for the same program as well – brought together here in a classic 60s album that allows each of their stars to shine brightly on their own! Every singer gets a set of their own tracks for the record – Fabares in the same style as her excellent records with producer/arranger Stu Phillips, Peterson at a level that's maybe a bit more throwaway kid pop, and Darren with a surprisingly strong presence that belies his record as the strongest recording star of the three. Titles include "She Can't Find Her Keys", "Keep Your Love Locked", and "Lollipops & Roses" by Paul Peterson; "Johnny Angel", "I'm Grlwoing Up", and "Johnny Loves Me" by Shelly Fabares; and "Her Royal Majesty", "Goodbye Cruel World", and "Conscience" by James Darren. ✨✧ Kenny DrewSolo/Duo – Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen/Bo Stief ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1966/1978/1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
Kenny Drew's the star of the set on piano – playing solo here on a session from 1978, with a young bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen in 1966, and an early 80s set of duets with bassist Bo Steif on the remainder of the tracks! The album does a nice job of blocking things out – so that the earliest tracks begin the record – but with the kind of open, sensitive modes we're normally used to hearing from the Storyville label in their later years – clearly marking these guys as pioneers in giving a player like Drew the kind of space to express himself in ways that didn't always happen back home in the US. Titles include "Ode To Mariann", "Blues For Nils", "Whisper Not", "Bluesology", "Ack Varmeland Du Skona", "Everything I Love", "Yesterdays", and "A Simple Need". CD

✨✧ Sheila Jordan & Arild AndersenSheila ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums ever recorded by Sheila Jordan – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of her work! The album's a set of spare duets recorded in Oslo with bassist Arild Andersen – in a setting that recalls some of the initial experimental work she'd done with Roswell Rudd, but with an even more spacious sound overall – one that lets Jordan dominate the tunes strongly with an amazing command of rhythm and timing! The approach is never too self-indulgent, and Andersen's warm tones on bass round out the tunes with a subtle sense of soul. Tunes are a mix of old standards and a few hipper 70s numbers – and include "Song Of Joy", "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Lady", and "Better Than Anything". Massively funky sound library work from Guy Pedersen – a bassist who already had a long legacy in French jazz by the time of this early 70s set, yet somehow manages to knock things out of the park in a completely different way! The bass is definitely at the core of most numbers – yet the basslines aren't always the familiar funky kind – as Guy opens up unusual tones and textures, and also brings in all sorts of interesting percussion – in ways that are never done, but which spice things up nicely, and almost create a sort of acoustic psychedelic vibe! Titles include "Purgatoire Mood 1", "Petit Moujik De Nuit", "Sing Song Bass", "Bass In Love", "Kermesse Non Heroique", and "Pretexte Pour Indicatifs". LP, Vinyl record album

One of those great later albums that has Chet Baker working alongside an instrument you never would have expected in the early days – blowing his own trumpet lines next to fantastic work on guitar from Doug Raney – a pair who really make some magic with this album! The set's also got the mighty Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass – handling rhythm in a way that's strong, but gentle at the same time – this beautiful balance that echoes the warmth of both of the other players, as Chet's sparkling trumpet lines resonate with the great colors from Raney's guitar. Bobby BareEnglish Countryside/Lincoln Park Inn/I Hate Goodbyes/Cowboys & Daddys ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 19.99
Four of the more obscure RCA albums from the great Bobby Bare – all brought together here in a single set! First up is the very unusual English Countryside album – a special set that has the vocals of Bobby Bare paired with a group from the UK – Liverpool's Hillsiders, who sing with a style that's a bit folk, and a bit rock – but which takes on a very distinct country vibe amidst the RCA production of Chet Atkins! Both Bare and The Hillsiders sing solo on the record – but most of the set has them paired together, and the presence of all those voices on the tracks create a nice sense of spontaneity – maybe a hint at the more relaxed recording approach that Bobby would use on his big albums of the mid 70s! Titles include "Sweet Dreams", "Six Days On The Road", "Find Out What's Happening", "Love's Gonna Live Here", "Goin Home", "Blue Is My Lonely Room", and "I Washed My Face In The Mountain Dew". Margie's At The Lincoln Park Inn is a seminal album in the career of Bobby Bare – and the record that really has him turning from a young smiling country singer to the kind of more adult, mature talent that would really send him over the top! The album's promise of "controversial country songs" is certainly apt – as in addition to the great Tom T Hall title cut, the album also features Bare taking on great material from Kris Kristoffersen, Mel Tillis, and even the team of Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn – all set to arrangements that are nicely more sophisticated than those used on the more pop productions of some of Bobby's earlier albums. Titles include "Margie's At The Lincoln Park Inn,", "The Law Is For The Protection Of The People", "Watching The Trains Go By", "Skip A Rope", "Rainy Day In Richmond", "Cincinnati Jail", "Wild As The Wind", and "Drink Up & Go Home". I Hate Goodbyes is the record that marked the return of Bobby Bare to RCA Records in the early 70s – and one that also marks the start of a very different phase in Bare's career! This time around, Bobby's handling the production himself – working with the kind of thoughtful, mature material that would really let him open up – songs from Billy Joe Shaver, Mickey Newbury, the team of Bill Rice and Jerry Foster, and even an early tune from Shel Silverstein – who would soon become one of the biggest contributors to Bobby's records. The vibe is very different than his RCA material of the mid 60s, and in a great way – on titles that include "I Hate Goodbyes", "Restless Wind", "Ride Me Down Easy", "Send Tomorrow To The Moon", "You Know Who", "An Offer She Couldn't Refuse", "What's Your Mama's Name Child", and "Poison Red Berries". Last up is Cowboys & Daddys – an overlooked gem in the mid 70s RCA years of the great Bobby Bare – and a set that really shows the dedication that Bare had during these years to finding the most sophisticated material of the new country generation! The list of songwriters alone is great – as the set features tracks from Terry Allen, Shel Silverstein, David Hickey, and Tom T Hall – plus an early contribution from Bob McDill, with whom Bare would soon record a lot more material on albums to come. There's a mature, laidback vibe to the whole set – different than some of the more playful Bobby Bare albums of the time – and titles include "Chester", "The Cowboy & The Poet", "Amarillo Highway", "Speckled Pony", "Calgary Snow", "Last Dance At The Old Texas Moon", "Pretty Painted Ladies", and "The Stranger". Steeplechase/Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Wonderful work from Anthony Braxton – an album that has him playing straight ahead jazz – but at a time when he was also making some of his most complex recordings of the 70s! The approach here is sublime – as Braxton's reputation has ears already anticipating some far-out playing, but then marvel at his restraint – his care for keeping alto and bass clarinet work inside a straight jazz tradition, yet always hinting at the modern inflections he can bring to his music! Tunes are almost all jazz standards, blown beautifully – with a tone that's crisp, cool, and very inviting – surprisingly soulful, and never cold at all – matched well with the rhythm trio of Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Titles include "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Ornithology", and "Marshmallow". LP, Vinyl record album

Great work from the Kenny Drew trio of the 80s – a lineup that always manages to bring out some deep sounds in their music – in this case, just the right undercurrent of sadness and loss to fit the title well! Drew's piano is beautiful at this point in his career – as fluid as before, but even more filled with feeling and depth – matched perfectly by the sensitive bass work of Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and the drums of Ed Thigpen – who, like Drew, is still constantly evolving in his second home overseas. The tunes are all well-chosen to fit the theme of the title – and tracks include "The Last Romantic", "Django", "Willow Weep For Me", "Elegy", "Tune Down", and "Finale". CD

A beautiful album that definitely lives up to its title – and delivers some of the wonderfully impressionistic piano work that Kenny Drew was recording in the 80s – music that's very different than both his early American albums in the 50s, and some of the key accompaniment he'd provide on European dates with tenor players in the 70s! Here, Kenny's very open and fluid, sometimes almost painterly in his approach to sound – yet still able to swing, too, thanks to accompaniment from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Alvin Queen on drums. The set features a killer version of "Last Tango In Paris" – plus "Cafe Flore", "Evening In The Park", "My Ship", "Morning Mist", and "Rouge Blues". CD

A legendary session from the early years of ECM – one of those records that really helped set the tone of the label for years to come! Fantastic work from Stan Getz! The sound here is wonderful – moody late 70s Getz, with some especially soulful moments on the mellow tracks too – that kind of spun-out blowing that we first started finding in Stan's career right around the Sweet Rain album, and which continued to show up beautifully on 70s albums like this! Joanne Brackeen plays some great piano in the quartet – including some electric keys too – and other players include Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Billy Hart on drums. CD

Steeplechase (Denmark), 1974. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A standout 70s set from Dexter Gordon – one that's a bit tighter than some of his longer-blown dates from overseas – and which almost sparkles with the same power as his 60s albums on Blue Note! The group here is nice and tight – with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all grooving in a style that's sharply focused, and which really sets the stage for Dex's wonderful tone on the solos. Pedersen's bass is great too – sometimes stepping out with a presence not usually heard on a set like this – and titles include the Gordon originals "The Apartment", "Antabus", and "Candlelight Lady" – plus "Wee Dot" and "Old Folks". Rock-solid overseas work from the mighty Dexter Gordon – a studio set instead of one of his live dates from the Danish scene of the time – and a record that seems to have Dex coming across with even more focus and power than ever! The tracks are long, and his solos have this wonderful bite – driven strongly by work from Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all moving sharply and tightly, with maybe an especially sharp crackle in the drums of Higgins, which really seems to energize even the mellower numbers! An unusual set for both Dexter and Blue Note – first, because the set was recorded in Europe (not at Rudy Van Gelder's), and second because the tracks are all quite long! The album was recorded in Paris – and is cut in an open-ended format that's very much in the mode that Gordon would later use on late 60s and early 70s sessions for European labels. The group features (then) local contemporaries Kenny Drew on piano, and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass – and is rounded out by Donald Byrd on trumpet and Art Taylor on drums. Tracks are long, but not meanderingly so – and feature a great mix of Blue Note hardbop, with some of the "roomier" recordings that were given to American players in Europe. Side one features an extended reading of Donald Byrd's "Tanya", and other tracks include Kenny Drew's "Coppin' The Haven", and a version of "Darn That Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Gearbox (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $23.99 29.99 About April 15, 2024 (delayed)
An ultra-rare performance from Dexter Gordon – one at a high school in Denmark at the same time he was really beginning to take off at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen! The group here is similar to one that was working with Dex in the club – Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – a rollicking rhythm section that really takes off on the title track – a searing rendition of "Soy Califa", which is one of our favorite Dexter Gordon tunes from the Blue Note years. The set then slides into a laidback reading of "Shadow Of Your Smile", with Dex blowing soulfully and deep – and the record concludes with a tight boppish version of "Blues Up & Down", with lots of room for long tenor and piano solos! The playing is great, but we should say that the recording quality seems to have the bass more upfront than both the piano and tenor – so the mix is a bit unusual. LP, Vinyl record album

Yet also, possibly because of the festival setting, there's a sharpness here that's a bit different than some of Gordon's small club live dates of the period – this great sense of energy that comes through right away, and which also seems to come from the rest of the group too – a quartet lineup that includes Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums. An astounding live set from Johnny Griffin – recorded at the famous Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, where Griff had practically taken up residence in the late 60s! The record crackles with the kind of free energy of the best Montmartre sessions – long tracks and compelling solos, stretched-out versions of tunes you may recognize, but which are transformed nicely by Griff's great solo work – and by a rhythm section that features Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! Rare live work from Tubby Hayes – recorded for Swedish Radio in one of the last years of his life, and a really rock-solid set! Given the professional recording of the performance, the set's quite different than some of the more dodgy Hayes live dates – and given Tubby's disappearance from the studio during these later years, the record may well stand as one of the few good documents of his talents at the time! Backing is by a hip trio that features Staffan Abeleen on piano, Niels Henning Ordsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and all tracks are quite long, with beautifully-crafted solos that spin out nicely – all in ways that are a bit looser and more free than some of Tubby's 60s work. Great drums from the legendary Roy Haynes – a player who was really coming into his own again at the time of this mid 90s set! The recording's a live one, done for Danish Broadcasting with a good sense of clarity – and the group is mostly European, with Tomas Franck on tenor, Thomas Clausen on piano, and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass. Haynes' touch on the kit is quite heavy at some points, but light and sensitive at others– and the set's got a well-rounded groove that's great proof of Roy's vision as a leader during this time, especially in the way he uses Franck's strong tenor lines. Gemini/BBE (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 44.99
Pianist Per Husby is a player with a rich, warm tone – one that really sets the stage here for some wonderfully soulful explorations by a very hip group – a combo who sound perfect when they hit a modal mode, but can also do some other wonderful things as well! Husby's piano is rich at the core, but the record is balanced with all sorts of great reed work – Knut Riisnaes on tenor, Harald Bergsen on alto and tenor, and Bjorn Johansen on soprano, tenor, and baritone – balanced nicely by the trumpet work of Bernt Anker Steen, and given a strong rhythmic pulse from Carl Morten Iversen on bass and Svein Erik Gaardvik on drums. And if you think all these Norwegian names might add up to a sleepy session, you're totally wrong – as the record is a great example of the way the better players on the European scene were absorbing American spiritual jazz experiments, then using the energy to make something new of their own. The title track "The Peacemaker" is worth the price of admission alone – and other titles include "Introduction To No Particular Song", "Smatta", "Nokve", "Fantasy In D", and "Adgang F". A fantastic album that brings together all of the European winners of the recent Downbeat polls – like Karin Krog, John Surman, Albert Mangelsdorff, Francy Boland, Daniel Humair, and Niels Henning Orsted-Pedersen. The sextet is a lively batch of free-swinging European jazz stylists, with touches of modernism that keep the whole session on edge throughout – in a way that's right up there with the best of the classic MPS sessions! The highlight of the set is Karin Krog's beautiful vocal version of "Maiden Voyage", but there's loads of other nice bits – like "Winter Song", "Ryoan-Ji", "Open Space", and "Hello Thursday". MPS/Endless Happiness, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99 About May 17, 2024
A seminal MPS session – and quite possibly the greatest record ever cut by French organist Eddie Louiss! The album features a trio that includes John Surman on soprano and baritone sax and Daniel Humair on drums – with a guest appearance on one track by bassist Niels Henning Orsted-Pedersen. The real strength, though, is Louiss – whose amazing post-Coltrane organ riffing is unlike anything else we've ever heard, rolling out in spiritual sheets of sound that provide a perfect foil for the gutsy soloing of Surman. The record's got a mix of outside and inside playing – with some breakout modal moments in an MPS mode, and other freer passages that reflect the label's commitment to new music. The whole thing feels almost like some of the more challenging work that Larry Young did for Blue Note – and it's got four long tracks that include "Our Kind Of Sabi", "Zafe Ko Ida", "Song For Martine", and "Out Of The Sorcellery". RCA (Germany), Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Not the usual album you might expect from a group with a trio in the name – as there's no piano in the mix, and instead the album features some sparkling trumpet from the great Allan Botschinsky – heard here at the height of his youthful, modern powers! The combo's led by drummer Bjarne Rostvold, whose touch on the kit is superb – snapping and swinging at most moments, but often in really subtle ways – with a level of dexterity that we get to hear more strongly here than on some of Bjarne's sessions as a sideman. Also great is bassist Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen – no stranger to most, but already really captivating here at a young age – and as melodic as he is rhythmic, which really fills out the sound. A mindblowing little record – one of those jazz meetings you might never have thought possible, and every bit as great as you'd expect! By the time of this set, Lars Gullin had already reached the heights of jazz in Scandinavia – one of the hippest players of the 50s, ready to branch out into even new ideas and expressions in the 60s! Enter Archie Shepp, quite young at the time, but already a fiercely creative talent on the tenor – blowing here alongside Gullin in the relaxed, open format of a live date at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen – a well-recorded performance that was done for Swedish radio, and which has both players taking very long solos. It's great to hear Lars really stretch out – sounding looser and grittier than on some of his studio work – and Shepp's really on fire blowing through the standards on the date – almost hinting at that approach he'd use in the late 70s, but with all the burning quality of his youth! Other players include Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and titles include "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "The House I Live In", "I Should Care", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". Great grooves galore – a sweet selection of tracks from the late 60s onwards, none of which were made available to the public at the time! The French Tele Music company was one of those secret sound library labels – recording top shelf tracks during the 70s, but then only passing them along to TV, radio, and film producers – for possible use in later projects! This meant that there was a rich array of wonderful sounds that never made it to records that the public could buy in stores – and the result is a collection like this, which is overflowing with killer grooves that you're not likely to have in your record collection at all. Styles range from funky jazz to clubby grooves, with plenty of soundtrack-styled funk numbers in the mix – and titles include "Gang Train" by Bernard Estardy, "West Coast Drive" by Pierre Alain Dahan & Mat Camison, "Mitsuko" by Jean Jacques Debout, "Percussionissimo" by Hervey Roy, "Suspense Time" by Michel Gonet, "Meteor One" by Sauveur Mallia, "Pop Percussions" by Janko Nilovic, "Rocket 2" by Bernard Lubat, and "Les Copans De La Basse" by Guy Pedersen. 26 tracks in all – selected by Lord Funk & DJ LC! Mid 70s magic from the team of Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz – playing together here with an even sharper edge than their recordings of two decades before! The recordings are all live – done at the Club Montmartre in December of 1975 – but they've got a clarity that's almost studio-worthy, which really captures the tone of the players. ✨✧ Dexter GordonApartment (with bonus track) ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD also features the bonus track "Stablemates" – from the same session, but previously unissued. CD

Steeplechase (Denmark), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include the great originals "Catalonian Nights" and "Benji's Bounce" – plus "Easy Living", "Four", and "Billie's Bounce". CD

✨✧ Dexter GordonSwiss Nights Vol 2 ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of a trio of fantastic performances recorded by tenor giant Dexter Gordon at the Zurich Jazz Festival in 1975 – a set that has him blowing with all that late-life brilliance he brought to his best European recordings of the time! Titles on this second volume include "Wave", "Darn That Dream", "Rhythm A Ning", "There Is No Greater Love", and "Sticky Wicket". CD

✨✧ Dexter GordonTokyo 1975 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elemental, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dexter Gordon in Tokyo, but working strongly with a lineup that helped him make some of his best 70s recordings in Europe – that wonderful quartet with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums! The format is familiar, and Dex is right on the money – spinning out those wonderfully strong, richly imaginative solos that make his Copenhagen material so strong over the years – that special Gordon way of taking a familiar tune, and opening it up completely in the space of his extended solo! Titles include Gordon's classic "Fried Bananas" – plus "Misty", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Jelly Jelly Jelly". CD features two bonus tracks – "Rhythm A Ning", recorded with the same group, but with Espen Rud on drums in 1973 – and "Old Folks", recorded with an unusual quartet that features Ronnie Mathews on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. ✨✧ Dexter Gordon & Slide HamptonDay In Copenhagen (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
MPS (Japan), 1970. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous European meeting of tenorist Dexter Gordon and trombonist Slide Hampton – brought together in this impeccable sextet session for MPS – a real standout in the label's straight jazz catalog over the years! By the time of the set, Gordon had been working heavily in Europe, especially Copenhagen – a locale where he was given ample freedom to stretch out and really explore his tone and phrasing. Hampton had also kicked around the continent a fair bit too, but in a tighter format, doing arrangements for others and working in bigger groups – and it's actually his careful touch that really helps shape the sound of the set – by bringing Gordon's groove into a focus more strongly than before, and reminding us that Dex was a great group player when he wanted to be! The frontline features Gordon's tenor, Hampton's trombone, and the trumpet of Dizzy Reece – often stating the heads in a fluidly soulful way, then breaking out nicely with individual voices – very much in the best Blue Note mode. Rhythm is by the trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Art Taylor on drums, and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass – and titles include 3 excellent originals by Hampton – "A New Thing", "My Blues", and "A Day In Vienna" – plus a wicked almost-Lee Morgan-esque take on "What's New", and versions of "Shadow Of Your Smile" and "You Don't Know What Love Is". CD

Black Lion/DA Music, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
An astounding live set from Johnny Griffin – recorded at the famous Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, Dexter Gordon's famous home in the late 60s – but a place that was also a showcase for the new sort of energy that Griffin was bringing to his horn at the time! Titles include "The Man I Love", "Blues For Harvey", "Sophisticated Lady", "Hush A Bye", and "Wee". CD

✨✧ Tubby HayesIn Scandinavia ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "C Minor Bird", "Off The Wagon", "Vierd Blues", "I Thought About You", and "Without A Song". CD

✨✧ Louis HjulmandPresenting Louis Hjulmand ... LP
Fontana (Denmark), 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Hip vibes from the European scene of the 60s – a really amazing little album from Danish player Louis Hjulmand, with a sound that's unlike anything we've heard from the US! Hjulmand's approach to the vibes is a lot sharper and stronger than most of his American contemporaries – almost in the bold chromatic mode of Bobby Hutcherson's "new thing" work for Blue Note, but more inside overall – with a sense of swing and rhythm that are a nice contrast to the sharper notes on his instrument. Accompaniment here is from a shifting lineup of players – Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, Lars Blach on guitar, and Bjarne Rostvold on drums – sometimes with only drums, other times with just a bit of bass, used very sparely! Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "War Dance", "Angel Eyes", "Mallet Dance", "Valse Dania", "Doodlin", and "Memories Of You". LP, Vinyl record album

Steeplechase (Denmark), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Jackie McLean's beautiful recordings for Steeplechase from the early 70's – a real return to basics that helped form the groundwork for his soulful playing of later years! This set features two long compositions by Billy Gault, the magical young pianist who graced some of McLean's best work – and although Billy's not actually playing on this session, his presence is more than felt on the excellent tunes "Mode For Jay Mac" and "Ghetto Lullaby". The set was recorded live, with backing by a European group that includes (then expat) Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and other tracks include "Callin", "Jack's Tune", and "Where Is Love". ✨✧ Jackie McLean & Dexter GordonSource Vol 2 ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great meeting of two generations of jazz – and one that really blows the top off some of Dexter Gordon's other European sessions of the time! The setting here is definitely one that's more a Gordon-based date – long tracks with rhythm backing from a trio with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums. But unlike some of the other long-blown Gordon-heavy albums for the stretch, the presence of Jackie McLean really brings in a new sort of fire – the kind of soaring, soulful energy he brought to his own records in these immediate post-Blue Note years – almost a Coltrane influence, and a sense of spiritualism that really comes through on some of his solo moments – even in this relatively straight setting. Titles include "Half Nelson", "I Can't Get Started", "Another Hair-Do", and "Dexter Digs In". CD

✨✧ Brew MooreBrew Moore Live In Europe 1961 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the all-too-few recordings of the great Brew Moore on tenor as a leader – a rare date recorded during the year of Moore's first appearance on the European scene – the start of a great 60s run that really had the saxophonist taking off overseas! Brew was already great on his handful of 50s releases in the US, but when he hit the European scene he seemed to change into an even more amazing player, almost overnight – one with a boundless sense of imagination that comes through in well-crafted, extended solos – and a sense of depth and soul that should have gotten Moore much greater recognition on these shores at the time! This set features really striking material from a few different settings – maybe the best of which is material recorded in Stockholm with a Swedish trio – on long tracks that include "Five Planets In Leo", "Buzzy", and "Apple Core". The set also features some tighter Parisian recordings – done at the Blue Note with a sweet quartet that features Lou Bennett on organ, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on the titles "Zonky", "Broadway", and "Satin Doll". Last up is one more track recorded for Danish TV with Paul Godske on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – a nice reading of Brew's own tune "Ergo". CD

An evocative title, and one that really sets the stage for the great sound of the record – an Oscar Peterson album that's a bit more open and flowing than usual – with some great long tracks, and a mighty soulful sound throughout! The title track is a real gem – as Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen begins the number with a long bass bit that's wonderful – which then ignites Peterson's piano into these long-rolling lines that really fit the spirit of the number! Other tunes spin out with a similar magic – still familiar Peterson modes, but kind of a deeper sense of lyricism too. Terry Clark handles drums – and titles include "Nigerian Marketplace", "Cakewalk", "Nancy With The Laughing Face", "You Look Good To Me", and "Au Privave". CD

A beautiful pairing of Oscar Peterson and Stephane Grappelli – two artists who'd recorded together before, but who sound especially nice in this live setting! The group's a quintet – with the guitar of Joe Pass, bass of Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and drums of Mickey Roker – but many moments feature these open passages where Peterson or Grappelli dominate – the latter of whom is fluid and swinging in a way we don't always hear this well. Titles include "Nuages", "That's All", "Skol Blues", "How About You", and "Someone To Watch Over Me". ✨✧ Finn SaveryPresenting Finn Savery ... LP
Fontana (Denmark), Mid 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from pianist Finn Savery – a set that's at once immediately modern, yet also filled with warmer tones and sadder notes from years past! In a way, Savery seems to link together the 60s experiments of pianists like Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett with a more timeworn sensibility that takes us back to small club piano of the postwar years – a unique blend of modes that darts out boldly at one minute, but holds close with a sense of sentiment the next. The trio here features impeccable work from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Alex Riel on drums – and titles include "Queen's Fancy", "But Not For Me", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Satin Doll" – but all done in very abstracted versions that are unlike anything we've ever heard before!
