✨✧ Cannonball Adderley with Ernie AndrewsLive Session! ... CD
Blue Note, 1962/1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent jazz vocal album by one of the lost greats! Ernie Andrews was always a musician's singer – in that he never cracked the masses, but did have tremendous respect among jazz players in the 60s and 70s. Here, in one of his best albums, he's caught live, working with Cannon's classic quintet, and under production work by David Axelrod. The record perfectly captures the live fire of Adderley's group, and mixes it with the strong voice of Andrews in a good set of material that includes "Big City", "I'm Always Drunk In San Francisco", "Don't Be Afraid Of Love", and "I'm A Born World Shaker". Plus, CD also features 3 bonus tracks, previously unissued – "Green Door", "Work Song", and "Come On Back". CD

Ernestine AndersonNever Make Your Move Too Soon ... LP
Concord, 1980. Very Good ... $1.99
A key moment in the career of vocalist Ernestine Anderson – a record that not only returned her to the public eye after a flurry of initial sides in the late 50s and early 60s, but which also finally helped Anderson find a sound that worked! The album's done with backing by the Monty Alexander trio – in a style that's bluesy and soul jazz inflected, but with a sweeter west coast sound – almost an early 80s equivalent of the groove explored by Lou Rawls or Ernie Andrews in LA during the mid 60s, but done with an even more relaxed, jazz-based approach here. The title track – "Never Make Your Move Too Soon" – was an instant standout that got Anderson play in many corners of the US – and other tracks are more familiar numbers, but done in a similar mode – with titles that include "Old Folks", "As Long As I Live", "Just One More Chance", "Poor Butterfly", and "My Shining Hour". Shirley ScottQueen Talk – Live At The Left Bank 1972 ... CD
Cellar Live, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $21.99 24.99
A searing live performance from Hammond legend Shirley Scott – much more on fire and longspun than her work in the 60s on Prestige Records – and an amazing showcase for the bold tenor talents of the great George Coleman! Coleman's always one of those players who seems to hit an extra something special when blowing live – and that's definitely the case here, as the richness of his tone and dexterity of his imagination – qualities that also really seem to inspire Scott on the organ as well! Unlike earlier dates, Shirley's handling all the basswork herself on the pedals of the Hammond – which only seems to open up and solidify her sense of rhythm – and the trio features excellent work on drums from Bobby Durham, whose loose touch is perfect. Titles include "Blues By Five", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Like Someone In Love", "Impressions", "Witchcraft", and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" – and Ernie Andrews guests on vocals on a few tracks too, including "Girl Talk" and "Don't Mess Around With Jim". Capitol, 1960s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really great testament to the wide warmth and many talents of Cannonball Adderley – as well as a portrait of just how much he'd touched the world of jazz in the short time he was on the planet! The set brings together collaborations between Cannon and a variety of artists – pulled from both his Capitol and Riverside years – with a lineup that includes Sergio Mendes, Nancy Wilson, Ernie Andrews, Charles Lloyd, Yusef Lateef, Eddie Vinson, and Bobby Timmons – all working with Adderley in a mix of modes that include vocal jazz, soul jazz, and even a bit of bossa nova! ✨✧ Heaven & EarthRefuge ... LP
Ovation, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful early 70s psych folk set from the angelic vocal and songwriting duo of Pat Gefell and Jo D Andrews – their Refuge album for Ovation in 1973 – highlighted by their gorgeous vocals, but committed with lovely, lightly soaring arrangements! Save for a solid cover of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin penned "Sixty Years On", Gefell and Andrews wrote the songs here, and it's remarkably strong stuff! The duo vocals and harmonies are especially sweet. The Chicago-based production wisely leaves ample space in the arrangements for them to sort of loosely, emotively embellish with their voices – with string arrangements by co-producer George Andrews and an impressive roster of session players including bassist Phil Upchurch, drummer Don Simmons and percussionist Bobby Christian. Includes "Jenny", "Voice In The Wind", "To A Flame", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", "Refuge", "Song For Craig", "A Light Is Shining", "Feel The Spirit" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(2011 reissue on Lion, in a gatefold cover, including the insert.)
