✨✧ Charles Mingus with Eric DolphyRevenge – The Legendary Paris Concerts ... CD
Revenge, 1964. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stupid title, but a record that features some excellent material from Mingus' fruitful trip to Europe in 1964! The 2CD set brings together live tracks recorded at the Salle Wagram in Paris, played by Mingus with a small group that includes Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard, and Dannie Richmond. Johnny Coles also plays trumpet on a haunting version of "So Long Eric", recorded very shortly before Dolphy's tragic early death – and the set features great long versions of "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress, Then Blue Silk", "Meditations On Integration", and "Fables Of Faubus". Live Mingus is crucial to any fan of this genius – and the kinds of colors and creativity expressed in a live set like this are a key component to an understanding of his music! CD

✨✧ Dr JohnSun, Moon, & Herbs (50th anniversary deluxe 3LP edition) ... LP
Atco, 1971. Near Mint- 3LP Trifold ... Out Of Stock
Dr John at the height of his powers – able to evoke his New Orleans roots, while reaching out to new currents of funk and soul – and opening the door to some famous guests too! A few years before, the Dr John persona of Mac Rebennack was something new – but by this early 70s point, the character had taken over completely – with a sense of mystical funky energy that really comes through on the set! And even though the record sports guest appearances from Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, PP Arnold, Graham Bond, and Doris Troy – it's clear that the man himself is always at the lead – creating his own sort of special magic on tunes that include "Craney Crow", "Black John The Conqueror", "Zu Zu Mamou", and "Pots On Fiyo", "Where Ya At Mule", and "Familiar Reality". Amazing 3LP set – with two full records of mostly unissued work – titles that include "Free From The Beast (take 1)", "Headin A Little Closer To My Home (take 2)", "Jungle (take 2 inst)", "Fish Dance (inst)", "Catfish Soiree Medley", "Where Ya At Mule (alt)", "Numerology (inst)", "Burning", and "Trip City (edit of takes 4 & 7)". A whirling maelstrom of sample-based hip hop funk instros from Oh No – working here as Dr No, thank you very much – and here he's going even deeper with the Dolemite samples-heavy formula of the preceding Ohnomite set! That record is a fresh, creative twist on the time-honored tradition of mining funky blacksploitation soundtracks – and this one goes further. It's atmospheric, tripped out and truly original! Includes "Tornado Theme", "The Drop", "Coldest Cat", "Dollar Club", "Touch-O-Matic", "Street Hustles", "Once Again", "Hello Yes", "Baby Ain't No", "Electrocutions", "Train Chasers", "I'm The One", "Burglers", "Stormy Nights", "Remember Her", "Paper Runs", "Chummery", "Bad Man" and many more. ✨✧ Van Dyke ParksDiscover America ... LP
Warner, 1972. Near Mint- ... $44.99
Van Dyke Parks is at his finest here – painting a unique picture of early 70s America that's touched with the same mad vision as his classic Song Cycle album! The styles are a bit wider-ranging here – and in a way, Parks seems to draw from a sonic space as wide-ranging as the "discover America" bus trip promised on the cover – shifting between Caribbean, country, classical, and soul styles – but all in a weird blend that comes off sounding very strange in the end. As before, there's a certain sense of nostalgia to the music – but any sweetness is undercut by the offbeat arrangements and instrumentation. Titles include "Jack Palance", "Bing Crosby", "John Jones", "FDR In Trinidad", "Stars & Stripes Forever", and "G-Man Hoover". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George Adams/Don Pullen QuartetDecisions ... CD
Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1984. Used ... $9.99
One of those key records that has George Adams and Don Pullen reinventing expectations of jazz for the 80s – both musicians with plenty of ear for the outside, but also coming back home with a well-rounded, deeply-rooted approach that's crucial in taking the American jazz legacy another step forward! Like some of their similar contemporaries, who could also be avant at times, and straight at others – Adams and Pullen have no concern with setting themselves in one camp or another – and not only flesh out the spirit of the record with both of those aspects of their playing, but also have some surprisingly bluesy undercurrents at times. The group features George Adams on tenor, Don Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – and titles include "Decisions", "Triple Over Time", "I Could Really For You", "Message Urgent", and "Trees & Grass & Things". Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 10CD ... $111.99 129.99
A treasure trove of work from Kevin Ayers – all four of his legendary Harvest albums, plus his Island album – all packaged in a massive set with lots of bonus tracks too! The songs here are amazing – easily on a par with the creative height of the early Pink Floyd – a lot lighter and more whimsical than Ayers original fame with Soft Machine – sometimes extremely playful, and often quite catchy – almost a Donovan-esque blend of folksy roots and jazz inflections – but tuned a bit more towards trippier ends, thanks to instrumentation that includes celeste, electronics, flute, oboe, kazoo, cello, organ, and a wide range of different guitars! Some numbers are a bit more experimental, but the tunefulness of the work is what really wins us – a way of being tripped-out, yet plenty catchy too – a blend that nobody else could do as well as Kevin. CD1 features the album Joy Of A Toy – with bonus tracks that include "Religious Experience", "Soon Soon Soon", and BBC tracks "Clarence In Wonderland", "You Say You Like My Hat", and "Why Are We Sleeping" – the last with Soft Machine. CD2 features a live performance in Hyde Park in 1970, plus a bonus track. CD3 features the album Shooting At The Moon – with bonus tracks that include "Butterfly Dance", "Jolie Madame", "Gemini Child", "Hat", and "Puis Je". CD4 features 12 BBC tracks from May of 1970 to November of 1971. CD5 features the album Whatevershebringswesing – plus bonus tracks that include "Sad & Lonely Faces", "Stars", "Sad Songs", "Fake Mexican Tourist Blues", "The Lady Rachel (remake)", and "Watching The Sun Go Down". CD6 and CD7 feature BBC sessions from January of 1972 to April of 1973 – 33 tracks in all. CD8 features the album Bananamour – plus bonus tracks that include "Decadance (early mix)", "Why Are We Sleeping (live Mile End)", "Connie On a Rubber Band", "Caribbean Moon", and "Take Me To Tahiti". CD9 features Live At Queen Elizabeth Hall, May 1973 – 11 tracks. DVD features rare TV performances from France and the UK – including some Old Grey Whistle Test material – and the 1973 promo film for "Caribbean Moon". 140 tracks, all newly remastered – and a 68 page booklet too! Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWinds Of Change ... LP
MGM, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
The Winds Of Change are definitely afoot in the sound of The Animals – as the album's one of their most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Electric PrunesUnderground ... LP
Reprise, 1967. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The Electric Prunes are maybe best-remembered in terms of their collaboration with David Axelrod – but here, you'll hear the young group already sounding pretty dam great on their own – working with a set of their own arrangements, to create that moody, eerie vibe that instantly made the group one of the standout acts on the American scene of the psych generation! Few acts were able to capture this sort of energy on our side of the Atlantic – and the Prunes veer between madness and magic at a level that's more typical of some of the trippiest UK groups of the period – mixing freak and fuzz, fear and awe, on titles that include "The Great Banana Hoax", "Wind Up Toys", "Dr. Do-Good", "Hideaway", and "Capt Glory". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Iron ButterflyUnconscious Power – An Anthology 1967 to 1971 (Heavy/In A Gadda Da Vida/Ball/Live/Metamorphosis/Fillmore East/bonus tracks) (7CD set) ... CD
Atco/Eclectic (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... Just Sold Out!
A monstrous assortment of work from Iron Butterfly – one of the key groups in helping the American scene move from psych to hard rock at the end of the 60s! First up are mono and stereo mixes of Heavy – a record that's not nearly as well known as their classic In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – but which has a very similar vibe all the way through! The songs are a bit shorter, but these guys really manage to do a lot with a little – using lots of brooding bass right up from the bottom, to create a blueprint for hard rock imitators in years to come – none of whom were able to match these guys' simple, direct approach – and their optimistic sense of power in their music. Many numbers often have this vocal interplay that really works wonderful with the fuzzy guitar lines – and titles include "Possession", "Unconscious Power", "So Lo", "Look For The Sun", "Stamped Ideas", "Fields Of The Sun", and a nice fuzzy funk version of "Get Out Of My Life Woman". Next is the stereo mix of In A Gadda Da Vida – the album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". Next is the stereo mix of Ball – a killer classic from Iron Butterfly – a group who always had way more to offer than their hits, as you'll find out when dipping into this full length set! The album's worth it alone for the organ lines – which kind of take off from the territory of The Doors, but are often more unusual – and mixed with vocals that can have an eerie sensibility, but without ever sounding indulgent! The music's not pop psych, but it's also never too full of itself – and titles include "In The Crowds", "In The Time Of Our Lives", "Soul Experience", "Lonely Boy", "Belda Beast", and "Filled With Fear". Next are mono and stereo mixes of Live – great live document of the heady power of Iron Butterfly – with titles that include "You Can't Win", "Are You Happy", "In A Gadda Da Vida", "Filled With Fear", and "In The Time Of Our Lives". Next is Metamorphosis – a record that's not a complete metamorphosis for Iron Butterfly, but one that definitely has the group stretching out with even more force and confidence than before! The group were maybe one of the few to come to hard rock via psych, instead of the blues rock path that so many others took at the time – and that difference is key here, as the songs really resonate with the potential for trippiness, but have this great sense of focus – one that makes the vocals sound even more potent than ever. There's still plenty of great organ work too – and titles include "Free Flight", "Shady Lady", "Best Years Of Our Life", "Slower Than Guns", and "Stone Believer". The set also features the 2CD 1968 Fillmore East set – an unreleased live performance from Iron Butterfly – one that captures the group at their late 60s height, in front of a very heady crowd at The Fillmore East! The recording quality is great – very clear, and different than the group's studio albums – with maybe even a bit more focus on the vocals of Doug Ingle, and the guitar lines of Erik Brann – in a way that lifts them out of the bottom sound a bit more, and presents the group in a whole new sort of focus! Plus, the brief patter from the stage also really helps us get an idea of how a trippy band like this could hold such great sway over a crowd at the time – energy that doesn't seem to stop at all, through the 2CD set's presentation of material from four different shows, on two nights of recording. Titles include "Are You Happy", "Stamped Ideas", "Fields Of Sun", "You Can't Win", "Unconscious Power", "My Mirage", "Her Favorite Style", "Possession", "Iron Butterfly Theme", and the mighty "In A Gadda Da Vida". CD set also features more tracks from singles, new remastering, a poster, and a big booklet of notes! CD

Fabio LibertoriAcqua E Sapone ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1984. Sealed ... $9.99
An unusual score for an unusual Italian film of the 80s – one that presents outwardly as a bit of a comedy, but which has some darker moments too – all of which come through very nicely in the music by Fabio Libertori! Fabio's definitely in the spirit of the decade with his instrumentation – there's a lot of keyboards and drum machine parts on the record – borrowed from American electro soul, and stripped down a lot more – then balanced with warmer passages that still use electric instrumentation, but with some deeper soundtrack elements. The core theme's almost got some breakdance appeal – the kind of lean cut that was always popular as beats on the street – but the other passages make for a surprisingly complicated soundtrack overall – on titles that include "Tema Di Sandy", "Fuga Di Sandy", "Acqua E Sapone", "Tema Di Enzo", "Primo Servizio Fotografico", and "La Tintoria/Il Vestito". Includes the bonus tracks "La Festa", "Tema Di Sandy (alt)", "C'E", and "La Sfilata Di Sandy (alt)". LP, Vinyl record album

Mighty CavaliersFisherman ... LP
Black Blood/Want Some (Germany), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99 42.99
A funky gem from 70s Kenya – music by a group who've got a very strong influence from American soul, but who turn things towards a unique vibe of their own – often using heavy bass and some trippier guitar bits – which sometimes puts their music in a space between familiar Afro Funk, and some of the more way-out moments of the Zamrock scene! There's definitely a highlife influence on some tunes too – but the group really pump up the bass, and work with some great echoey production that trips things out nicely – even the vocals, which have a really haunting vibe. The guitar work is great – and titles include "Amina", "Fisherman", "Trying To Get You", "Dunia Ina Mambo", "Look At Me", and "Maggie Mama". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave PikeInfra-Red (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 30.99
Amazing grooves from the legendary Dave Pike – one of the American vibists' few albums for the MPS label – and quite possibly the trippiest of the bunch! The set's a beautiful illustration of the freedoms that the MPS label offered American players like Pike – a chance to really open up and do his thing, and find new sides and styles he'd never expressed before on his records back home! Of course, part of the strength of the set is the group he's working with here – an ensemble that includes the amazing Volker Kreigel on guitar (and sitar!), plus JA Rettenbacher on bass and Peter Baumeister on drums. But, lest you think this is a standard quartet affair, let it be known that all players – including Pike – handle a very wide variety of instruments throughout the session – including bongos, toys, maracas, other percussion, and more – even a bit of vocalizations as well! Tracks often have a slow-building, slightly-trippy feel that's totally great – and Kreigel's work on guitar is a perfect pairing with Pike's vibes – especially as both players are clearly digging an Eastern influence for the set. Titles include "Suspicious Child", "Soul Eggs", "Raga Jeeva Swara", "Rabbi Mogen's Hideout", "Attack Of The Green Misers", "Infra Red", and "Send Me The Yellow Guys". LP, Vinyl record album

John RenbournUnpentangled – The Sixties Albums (There You Go/John Renbourn/Bert & John/Another Monday/Watch The Stars/Sir John A Lot Of/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... $32.99 50.99
A treasure trove of greatness from British folk rock legend John Renbourn – all of his late 60s solo work, done before moving on to greater fame in Pentangle! First up is There You Go – a rare one from singer Dorris Henderson and future Pentangle founder John Rensbourn! Florida born, LA raised singer Dorris Henderson moved to London in 1965 and was soon singing London's folk clubs, where she met Rensbourn. A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green". A bit more electric than you might guess from the "natural" in the title – but a great set of keyboards from the mighty Richard Tee – one of his few albums as a leader back in the day! The set's produced by Bob James, and has a groove that's not unlike some of James' own smoother fusion from the end of the 70s – a style that still has a fair bit of jazz in the mix, but which also shines with some warmer R&B touches as well. A pair of gems from keyboardist Richard Tee – back to back on a single CD! Strokin is filled with sweet electric keys from the great Richard Tee – and was originally issued on Bob James' classic Tappan Zee imprint! Tee was one of the 70s best studio keyboard players – and his talents showed up on plenty of great Atlantic soul albums, and a fair number of jazz-related dates. This album, one of his few on his own, features Tee out front, soloing keyboards, in very much a Bob James kind of way. The set's perhaps a bit disco/R&B, more so than some of James' own work at the time – but it's still got a nice jazz component, and features work by Eric Gale on guitar, Tom Scott on saxes, and the great Steve Gadd on drums. Titles include "Virginia Sunday", "First Love", "Strokin", "Jesus Children Of America", and "I Wanted It Too". Natural Ingredients is a bit more electric than you might guess from the "natural" in the title – but a great set of keyboards from the mighty Richard Tee – one of his few albums as a leader back in the day! The rest of the group features Piero Bassini on piano, Attilio Zanchi on bass, and Giampiero Prina on drums – and it's great to hear Watson really opening up in a very different way, and in a very different group – than some of his better-known American records of the time. Light In The Attic, Mid 60s/1970s/Mid 80s. Used 2CD ... $19.99
A pretty amazing collection of rare work from the Native American underground – not the late 60s/early 70s records that tried to cash in on growing pride for the Native American scene, but obscure Canadian sides that represent a rich array of sounds we've never heard before! The styles here are great – and run from folksy to trippy to surprisingly tuneful – and although the music spans a 20 year space, there's a really solid early 70s approach overall – with production that's never too slick, and a real sense of respect for the singer/songwriters who make the package so great. The whole thing's as much a book as it is a musical collection – as the notes are hugely expansive, over 120 pages with the CD set – and answer a huge amount of questions, and fill in a lot of background detail too. The set features 34 titles in all – with work by names we'd never heard before – Willie Dunn, Sugluck, Willie Thrasher, Lawrence Martin, William Tagoona, Sikmiut, Saddle Lake Drifting Cowboys, Morley Loon, Peter Frank, David Campbell, and others. Synthonic (Italy), Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $43.99 49.99
Amazing electronics from the European scene of the early 80s – the kind of tracks that might have played strongly on the dancefloors of Italian and German clubs, but which also have plenty of power on their own all these many years later! Most numbers are quite spare, and are a key link between 70s Euro prog and 80s American house music – as they represent a stripping down of the former, in ways that really get it ready for the latter! Given that import singles like these were a key inspiration for DJs and producers in mid 80s Chicago and Detroit, you can definitely hear that link – and even if you don't care about the history, you'll find plenty to love in the spare beats, spacey keyboards, and captivating sounds in the cuts. Titles include "Flying Turns" by Crash Course In Science, "Lions" by Tones On Tails, "Saving Grace" by Thomas Leer, "Basic (Beppe Loda rmx)" by MC1, "Driving Blind" by Chris & Cosey, "Donkeys Bearing Cups" by Craig Leon, "On The Way To Medora" by Polyphonic Size, "Discophrenia" by Ralph Lundsten, "Views Of The Rhine" by Kevin Harrison, "Life In the Gladhouse" by Modern English, and "Uranium (Beppe Loda rmx)" by Sirius. ✨✧ George Adams & Don PullenDecisions/Life Line/Live At Montmartre (3CD set) ... CD
Ultra Vybe/Timeless (Japan), 1981/1984/1985. New Copy 3CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Post-Mingus work from reedman George Adams and pianist Don Pullen – three albums in a single set! Decisions is one of those key records that has George Adams and Don Pullen reinventing expectations of jazz for the 80s – both musicians with plenty of ear for the outside, but also coming back home with a well-rounded, deeply-rooted approach that's crucial in taking the American jazz legacy another step forward! Life Line is a strong outing from this key post-Mingus collaboration – and a record that really shows both Don Pullen and George Adams really coming into their own! Pullen's piano can have plenty of edges, as can Adams' tenor – but there's also some warmer, lyrical moments that really round things out – kind of a balance between righteous energy and deeper quietude that the musicians might have learned during their time with Charles Mingus – taken to a logical small group extension here. Adams also plays a bit of flute, which is especially nice – and the group also includes Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "The Great Escape Or Run John Henry Run", "Seriously Speaking", "Soft Seas", and "Protection". Live At Montmartre is solidly soaring work from tenorist George Adams – recording live here with pianist Don Pullen, one of his best musical partners during the 80s! The album's got a bit more of a bite than some of the pair's studio sessions – a bit straighter overall, but recorded with a nice degree of energy, and some long tracks that really let both players open up nicely – in a combo that also features John Scofield on guitar, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The inclusion of Scofield's guitar changes up the group's sound in a nice way – adding in some more chromatic elements that really stand out – and titles include "IJ", "Flame Games", "Song Everlasting", and "Forever Lovers". A pretty amazing surrealist French cosmic concept album from Jacky Chalard – with lots of spacey synth prog atmospherics and spoken French dialogue! This is a record in which Finders Keepers boasts similarities to both Melody Nelson and La Planete Sauvage, and truth be told, the music not only lives up to that lofty description – it's completely correct! Chalard and a group of French rock heavies featuring the members of Dynastie Crisis team up with Gilbert Deflez, a radio personality who read science fiction stories over the airwaves for a tripped out experience, and wholy credible prog funk rock set, to boot! A really wild little funky record – one that's got very obscure origins on the Argentine scene of the 70s, and which serves up an unusual blend of soul, funk, and sound library modes! The tunes have plenty of wicked basslines, heavy drums, and riffing guitar – all of which draw inspiration from American funk of the time – yet there's also weird use of processed vocals, sound samples, moogy keyboards, and other elements that continue to keep things interesting – sometimes with this fake urban vibe that can feature spoken parts that are really cool – augmented even more on a few funky edits that are added to the original album. Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mindblowing sounds from the great Bunny Lee – and exactly the kind of collection that makes us love the Pressure Sounds label so much! The track selection is wonderful – and most numbers are balanced in a unique space between reggae and rocksteady, and often have some crucial influences from American soul and funk as well – but they come across with a mode that's very different from more standard reggae, especially the style of the music that would be more codified a few years later. Instead, there's a really rich sense of experimentation here – as Bunny Lee and his All Stars work on instrumental tracks, or alongside other key artists like Delroy Wilson, Rico Rodriguez, Tommy McCook, U Roy, or Winston Williams. Some tunes have amazingly trippy touches – and a few points even mix in some wild moog too – and titles include "Double Attack", "Ivan Itler The Conqueror", "Scarface", "Joe Lewis", "War", "Wet Vision", "When I Get My Freedom", "Smooth & Sorts", and "Death Rides A Horse". A slinky, soulful set from the Japanese scene of the early 80s – one of those records from a time when it really seemed that jazz fusion was informing some of the best records from singers overseas – and that's definitely the case here! There's a warm jazzy glow to the record that's wonderful – and Takako Mamiya sings with a style that's right up there with some of the most sophisticated American soul singers of the period – particularly that shift that happened in the late 70s with artists like Phyllis Hyman or Marlena Shaw – although the lyrics here are all in Japanese. Genji Sawai produced, and handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Love Trip", "One More Night", "Mayonaka No Joke", "All Or Nothing", "Chinese Restaurant", and "Nagisa De Dance". A fantastic look at a really unique moment in American pop and rock – a time when some groups were using larger arrangements to make things wonderfully complex in the backgrounds – all while still creating tunes that were pretty darn catchy! The shift is very different than the love of fuzz and electricity in the psychedelic generation – as these guys were using strings, woodwinds, and other instrumental elements to create their own approach to trippier sounds – with results that didn't always have them hitting the top of the charts, but which are even more fantastic because of that! The great Bob Stanley put together the set, and it's one of the best he's done for Ace so far – presented with detailed liner notes on all the groovy tracks – 24 numbers that include "You Lied" by Neon Philharmonic, "I Shall Call Her Mary" by Montage, "Raggedy Ann" by John Randolph Marr, "Tulu Rogers" by Appaloosa, "My Silent Symphony" by Chris & Peter Allen, "Land Of Sensations & Delights" by JK & Co, "Blue Jack Of Diamonds" by HP Lovecraft, "Other Times" by Tom Northcott, "Fairest Of The Season" by Nico, "Emily's Illness" by Nora Guthrie, "Satin Slipper" by The Blades Of Grass, "I Have Been Alone" by The Common People, and "My Plan" by Russ Giguere. RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of grooves you might ever hope to own – a batch of tracks that come from the unlikely prog underground in the UK – but which are full of heavy basslines, riffing guitars, and funky drums! A few years earlier, the UK scene was in love with American soul and blues – which came through in famous straighter recordings of those modes overseas – but by the time of these tracks, the scene had really found its own vibe – stretching out in ways that were famously filled-out, yet still influenced strongly by more soulful modes in all the right ways! The result is a wonderful blend of soaring instrumentation, sometimes trippy production, and very groovy rhythms – sort of the hybrid that you were getting in America by groups like Chicago or Santana, but served up here by some much more obscure underground acts. The 3CD set is a fantastic overview of this wonderful moment – and features 58 tracks, along with a big booklet of notes. Titles include "The Bitch" by Gasoline Band, "Somethin You Got" by Second Hand, "Home Is Where I Belong" by Quicksand, "He's Gonna Step On You Again" by John Kongos, "Bad Times" by Paladin, "Travelling Like A Gypsy" by Hanson, "I'm A Thief" by Juicy Lucy, "So Many People" by Skin Alley, "3D Mona Lisa" by Paul Brett Sage, "One Way Glass" by Trifle, "Wake Up My Children" by Siren, "The Devil Made Me Do It" by Curtis Knight Zeus, "Drinking My Wine" by Hardin & York, "Little Message" by Jody Grind, "Eyeballs" by Blue Mink, "Celebration" by Chillum, "Weren't Born A Man" by Dana Gillespie, "I Saw An Angel" by Pentangle, "Libel" by Hard Stuff, "Pigs Foot" by Pesky Gee, "I'm A Man" by The Web, and "Indian Rope Man" by Noir. Amazing sounds from the hinterland of gospel music – tracks pulled from vintage 45s issued by tiny local labels – often featuring artists who never cut a full album of work on their own! The tunes are nice and tight, and packed with plenty of soul – echoing some of the secular sounds of the time, which no doubt was something of the agenda for issuing the music on a 7" single – although other numbers are definitely gospel, and evoke more of a sermon-like approach! The package features an insert with notes on the music, and a nice hand-assembled cover – and titles include "He Got His Eyes On You" by Brother Sidney Harris, "Jesus Is Living Today" by Linston Triplett, "I Heard A Prayer (parts 1 & 2)" by Elijah Thurston, "He Will Fix It" by Sam Williams, "All Wrap Up In One" by Otis Wright, and "Send The Holy Ghost" by Brother Clark & His Trio. An interesting turning point for this funky Nigerian group of the 70s – as the set's still got the chunky rhythms of previous efforts, but also shows a touch of influence from reggae on some of the grooves – as well as some very cool use of keyboard touches that give the whole thing some nice electric currents! The sound is still nice and raw overall, and some of the best cuts have a straight funk approach that's really universal – grooves of the sort that you'd hear on an American funky 45, but maybe produced with that compelling sense of echo that makes so many west African records from the time sound a bit trippy. A well-titled album, given that the overall feel here is maybe a bit more stripped-down and almost rootsy at times – even though the trio's still working with producer George Martin! The set was recorded in just a week at Caribou Ranch – and it's almost a return to the core harmonies and acoustic elements of the group's roots – cast out here with perfect compressed sound, yet also hitting harder with a few more punched-up moments at times too. Not the American Avengers punk group from the San Francisco scene of the late 70s – nor the UK television duo of Emma Peel and John Steed – but a totally great late 60s group from New Zealand, and one who've got a beautifully baroque sense of psych to their sound! The group have maybe the same lofty approach that the Bee Gees were using on their own sublime late 60s records, but the sound here is a bit more stripped down, gritty, and garagey – with the higher elements coming both from the way the group harmonizes, and creatively uses conventional small group instrumentation – with these deft turns of instrumental phrase that illuminate the darker corners of the songs in a really great way. The package brings together a host of rare singles, mostly recorded in New Zealand by the Parlophone label – and also even includes some very cool radio spots too! 27 tracks in all – with titles that include "Days Of Pearly Spencer", "Love Hate Revenge", "Midnight Visitation", "Sunshine Lady", "Everyone's Gonna Wonder", "Take My Hand", "Night In The City", "Sally", "September Winds", "What Price Love", "Flower Girl", "Out Of Sight Out Of Mind", "Love Is A One Way Ticket", "Fisherwoman", "Night Time", and "Waterpipe". The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! Columbia, 2017. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Bob Dylan takes on the American songbook once again – revisiting the territory of classic 20th century songwriters that he touched on the Fallen Angels album, but in an overstuffed mode that definitely warrants the Triplicate title! The triple-length format really has Dylan going to town on the material – and maybe doing a lot more than just trying to ape an older singer like Frank Sinatra – as the arrangements are often surprisingly fresh, and almost hit the kind of country/standard mode that Willie Nelson hit with his Stardust recording. In fact, given the rasp and world-heavy tone of Dylan's voice, and the strong use of both acoustic and steel guitar on some of the tunes, the whole thing maybe feels more like a vision of midcentury, seen through a lens that gives the sound of Nashville a lot more importance in the canon. The set was recorded at the Capitol Studios, which seems a great place to capture this vibe – and titles include, not surprisingly, "Stardust", plus "This Nearly Was Mine", "Stormy Weather", "Once Upon A Time", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "As Time Goes By", "Imagination", "Day In Day Out", "There's A Flaw In My Flue", "These Foolish Things", and "You Go To My Head". A really stunning set from Il Balletto Di Bronzo – a group who clearly have the instrumental chops to take off in a proggish way, but really keep things interesting here by staying in a grittier, more straightforward groove! The power of the drums and guitars is wonderful – almost funk rock at times, but with a slight bit more drama – which may well come from the dynamic lyrics sung in Italian! There's a focus and a punch to the record that really makes it stand out from the rest of the Italian scene at the time – a no-nonsense quality that seems more influenced by the American underground than some of the Anglo influences that were guiding most of the other groups. Were the set in English, and recorded on the Sunset Strip in 1968, it would have become a worldwide classic – yet the obscurity is what makes the album even more charming – a rich discovery all these many years later. A groovy groovy electric set from Hammond giant Shirley Scott – a set that really kicks things up in the rhythm department, in a way ties the album as much to Atlantic Records soul of the 60s as it does to some of Scott's earlier work for Prestige! There's a great pulse at the bottom of the tunes – thanks to guitar work from Billy Butler and Eric Gale, and some sweet electric bass from Chuck Rainey – working here in the rhythm section with Jimmy Johnson on drums and Ralph MacDonald on congas. The combination of all these great players on one date really makes things cook – and Shirley's organ sounds groovier than ever – so much so, she also seems free to try out a few sounds here on piano and ondoline as well. One of THE greatest experimental rock albums of the 60s – a landmark effort from a short-lived group that included avant musicians Joe Byrd and Gordon Marron! The group's got a really tremendous sound – part psyche, part electronic, and part folk rock – all put together in a freewheeling style that cares little for genre or convention – and which must have really shook the roots of Columbia Records when they submitted the tape for this set! The instrumentation on the set should be enough to pop your cork – as the group uses ring modulator, electric drums, electric harpsichord, organ, calliope, and other early electronic instruments – but their sound is topped off with some really beautiful vocals from singer Dorothy Moskowitz, adding a light touch that really makes for a strange juxtaposition! The lyrics are a bit poetic and trippy – in a good way – and titles include "The American Metaphysical Circus", "Garden Of Earthly Delights", and "Cloud Song". A stunning run of music – the complete Atlantic Records material of Vanilla Fudge – a late 60s group who had a sound that was very much their own! Vanilla Fudge swim in the same sea of fuzzy guitars and heady organ lines as some of their trippiest contemporaries – but they have this really unique approach that's often slow-moving, long-building, and turned towards songs that are better-known as more pop hits of the time – so that their music ends up being some kind of crazy acid trip version of AM Radio! The group also add in some of their own material too – and they have a rock-solid approach to instrumentation that's a perfect bridge between 60s psych and 70s hard rock – served up on the organ of Mark Stein, guitar of Vince Martell, bass of Tim Bogert, and drums of Carmine Appice – the latter two of whom would reach fame on their own. The package is massive – and features the full albums Vanilla Fudge and The Beat Goes On, in both mono and stereo versions – plus the records Renaissance, Near The Beginning, and Rock & Roll – plus a double-length concert recorded at The Fillmore West on the first of January, 1969. Four classic roots albums, all produced by Niney The Observer – one of which appears here on CD for the first time ever! The set begins with Slave Call – a really great 70s album from The Ethiopians – done in a strong roots style that's given lots of great production touches from Niney The Observer! There's great use of percussion at the bottom of most cuts – and the set begins with a cut that's less reggae than most, which really sets the scene for the distinctive quality of the record – a vibe that only gets better as the well-trained vocals of the group spread around and help deliver the message-oriented lyrics! Titles include a remake of "Train To Skaville" – plus "Ethiopian National Anthem", "Slave Call", "Hurry On", "Culture", "Obeah Book", and "I Love Jah". Next is Reggae Mix Up – a collection of different tracks, mostly in 7" mixes, all produced by Niney The Observer – with work from Niney himself, plus The Heptones, Gregory Isaacs, The Morwells, Reggae George, Junior Delgado, and Johnny Clarke! Next is Mr McGregor – a tremendous set from Freddie McGregor, his first solo outing – though he'd been busy on the Kingston music scene for many years by the time the album came out. McGregor is working here under the production of Niney The Observer – and the set is a wonderful blend of easy Lover's cuts, smooth Jamaican soul, and earthy roots numbers. The whole thing was cut at Channel One over a great batch of Observer rhythms – and titles include "We Got Love", "Walls Of Jericho", "Jah Can Count On I", "Oh No Not My Baby", "Zion Chant", "Rastaman Camp", and "Rasta Have Faith". Last up is the never-reissued Showcase album – a really great collaboration – the soulful vocals and lyrics of the great Freddie McGregor, and the tripped-out production of the great Niney The Observer! Niney's bringing plenty of dubby elements to the music – drawing especially strongly on the basslines – which definitely helps move things away from mellower lovers rock modes, as promised on the cover – and pushes the whole thing into headier territory that makes Freddie's vocals sound even better as a result! Titles include "Lover's Rock JA Style/Lover's Version", "The Overseer/Overseer Version", "Chant It Down/Chant It Version", "Jay Will Bless You", "Love One Another", and "Sitting In The Park/In The Park Version". CD also features two Freddie McGregor bonus tracks – "Roman Soldiers Of Babylon" and "Follow This Ya Sound". CD

✨✧ Peter BardensLong Ago Far Away – The Recordings 1969 to 1971 (Answer/Peter Bardens/bonus tracks) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of wondeful albums – back to back in a single set, with bonus material too! First up is Answer – fantastic solo work from Peter Bardens – an artist who'd later gain fame as the lead singer of Camel, but who's even more fantastic here on his own – working in a trippy blend of modes that's equally balanced between prog and psych! Bardens plays organ on most of the tracks, but he uses the instrument in ways that are very different from the more R&B-inspired Hammond lines of the mod generation – often tightly fused with the sublime guitar of Andy Gee, a player who's got this sharp sound that's full of chromatic hues that really resonate with the keys of the organ – as the pair take off in this soaring groove that's occasionally a bit funky, always a bit trippy, and which gets a great kick from bass, drums, and percussion – plus support vocals from Linda Lewis and Steve Ellis. The album's really something special – great all the way through – and titles include "The Answer", "Homage To The God Of Light", "I Don't Want To Go Home", "I Can't Remember", "Let's Get It On", and "Don't Goof With A Spook". Next is Peter Bardens – a second solo set from Peter Bardens – recorded in the years before he rose to fame as the singer in Camel – and a set that does a nice job of uniting the two different strands of his career! There's moments here that show Bardens' abilities on the keyboard nicely – piano passages or organ lines that go back to the work he did on the more soulful side of the UK scene in the late 60s. And other cuts stretch out a bit more, and open to progressive ideas – but in ways that are very different than Camel too. Titles include "Sweet Home Wine", "Down So Long", "Write My Name In The Dust", "Blueser", and "Feeling High". 2CD set features great notes – and bonus tracks that include the rare single recorded with Village, with "Man In The Moon" and "Long Time Coming", a 1970 version of "Long Ago & Far Away", and the French-only single "Homage To The God Of Light (parts 1 & 2)". A motherlode of rare tracks from The Brand New Heavies – a 2CD collection of their club and house remixes over the years, most of which were originally only issued on 12" singles! Although the Heavies' core groove has always been great enough to make their best albums instant classics, the group's also got a great reputation for their remixes – especially those done in the US by Delicious Vinyl, helping to expand their sound even more for American dancefloors! This 2CD set serves up a whopping 26 tracks in all – broken up into one disc of funk mixes and one of house mixes – with titles that include "Never Stop (extended)", "Stay This Way (Slam mix)", "Dream Come True 92 (Disco 2000 mix)", "Back To Love (Opaz radio version)", "Spend Some Time (Sweeny club)", "Midnight At The Oasis (Opaz 7")", "Shelter (Dobie's the way it should be mix)", "You Are The Universe (Opaz rmx)", "Mind Trips (Durham rmx)", "You've Got A Friend (Ballistic Brothers rmx)", "Stay This Way (the club mix)", "Dream On Dreamer (Heavies motion mix)", "Back To Love (DJ Duke mix)", "Spend Some Time (Malone & Mollison piano mix)", "Midnight At The Oasis (Roger's brand new radio anthem)", "Close To You (MAW rmx edit)", "Sometimes (MAW smooth edit)", "You Are The Universe (Curtis & Moore's universal summer groove 7"), and "Shelter (Dan's groove part 1)". A fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". LP, Vinyl record album

MGM/Polydor, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

Johnny Cash's first record for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label – and a late career reviving masterpiece for the great, distinctly American legend. Rubin's genius idea for Johnny Cash was to strip the sound to it's barest essence, and let Cash's deep, bass-vibrating baritone voice bring genuine, authoritative soul to a great batch of handpicked songs. Recorded for the most part in Cash's own Tennessee cabin, and backed by just acoustic guitar, Cash brings a soulful depth to seeming oddball covers and his own great songs alike. A landmark session that gathered together just about every hip British jazz and jazz/rock musician of the time – and brought them together into one super-cool orchestra of sound! Robert Fripp produced the record, and Keith Tippett is the overall music director – but the album's got a feel that's much more in the avant side of the UK jazz spectrum – particularly the trippier side of the Deram/Decca label of the late 60s – like work by Mike Westbrook or Mike Gibbs! The lineup is huge – with Elton Dean and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, Alan Skidmore and Gary Windo on tenor, Ian Carr and Mongesi Fesa on trumpets, Mark Charig on cornet, Nick Evans and Paul Rutherford on trombone, Keith Tippett on piano, Brian Godding on guitar, Robert Wyatt and John Marshall on drums, and Maggie Nicholls, Julie Tippett, Mike Patto, and Zoot Money on vocals – plus lots of strings as well! Atlantic, Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sublime soul from Change – an Italian combo who got some great American help on their early 80s for Warner Brothers! The Change groove is totally great – a stripped-down blend of beats, bass, and keyboards that was head and shoulders above much of the clunkier 80s soul of the time – a lean groove forged from the best Italian club influences of the time, then brought over to this side of the Atlantic for some warmer touches on production and vocals. Luther Vandross sings lead on a few key cuts here, and other tracks have some equally great vocals – plus a nice undercurrent of jazz in the mix, especially on the guitar and keyboards. CD features 14 tracks that include "Hold Tight", "The Very Best In You", "Paradise", "Searching", "The Glow Of Love", "A Lover's Holiday", "This Is Your Time", "You Are My Melody", "Say You Love Me Again", "Don't Wait Another Night", and "Hard Times". RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Over two dozen tracks by The Dee Jays – one of those cool 60s groups who were born in London, but hit much bigger fame in another European country! In this case, the place was Sweden – where the group moved in the mid 60s, and immediately captured a big audience who were hungry for the hip sounds of London – which The Dee Jays gave them in droves, served up in a garagey style that also drew plenty of influence from American soul! The music here is surprisingly tight and tuneful – never too polished, as there's still lots of grit in the grooves – but delivered at a level that really packs a punch. These guys know just how to pitch themselves – they're never out to make anyone think they've got a claim to American blues, but they still keep the rhythms tight and serve up just the right level of searing guitar along with their lyrics. This 28 track set tells their story in depth, and also brings together lots of rare Swedish singles – all with vocals in English, on titles that include "Coming On Strong", "Dimples", "Farmer John", "Long Tall Shorty", "Ring You On Friday", "Striped Dreams Checked Fear", "Not That Girl", "Surrender", "Strong Love", "Time & Time Again", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", and "Coming On Strong". ✨✧ Jack DeJohnetteSpecial Edition (Special Edition/Tin Can Alley/Inflation Blues/Album Album) (4CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A quadruple-header of a set – four great albums together in one cool box! First up is the first album from the great Special Edition group of drummer Jack DeJohnette – a wickedly sharp record that's as equally tight on the reeds as it is on the drums! The album features brilliant work on tenor and bass clarinet from David Murray, and equally nice alto from Arthur Blythe – both criss-crossing and soaring out effortlessly in each others' company – amidst complex rhythmic impulses from DeJohnette on drums, and both bass and cello from Peter Warren. Jack also plays a bit of piano and melodica as well – and titles include "One For Eric", "Zoot Suite", "Central Park West", "India", and "Journey To The Twin Planet". On Tin Can Alley, the great Chico Freeman really shines with drummer Jack DeJohnette – lending his tenor, flute, and bass clarinet to the album – and helping make it a really reed-heavy affair! John Purcell's also in the frontline with Chico – playing alto, baritone, and flute – and in addition to Peter Warren's bass and cello, the album Jack DeJohnette also plays drums, congas, piano, and organ too! The range of instrumentation almost echoes some Chicago AACM roots at times – but with that tighter focus that musicians like Jack were bringing to their work at ECM – and titles include "Riff Raff", "The Gri Gri Man", "I Know", and "Pastel Rhapsody". Inflation Blues is a record that bristles with energy right from the start – spurred on by the creative rhythms that have always made Jack DeJohnette one of the most inventive drummers of his time! The group features a triple-threat lineup with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, and John Purcell on alto, baritone, flute, and clarinet – especially nice at points when the reedmen shift and turn with sharp edges learned from the earlier avant years, yet given a nice focus here under DeJohnette's leadership. Jack penned all original tunes for the set, and there's a depth to his writing that really marks a move forward – possibly some of his richest musical statements on record ever! Titles include "Ebony", "Inflation Blues", "Slowdown", and "The Islands". Album Album is a record that really dives deep with a rich mix of creative rhythms and inventive horn lines! The album still has Jack staying true to his more avant roots – working with tenor from David Murray, alto and soprano sax from John Purcell, baritone and tuba from Howard Johnson, and bass from Rufus Reid – a lineup that's a bit bigger than on other Special Edition albums, and which is used to fill in even more colors and deeper elements than before. Some of the tunes are wonderfully vivid in approach – and titles include "Festival", "Third World Anthem", "Zoot Suite", "Ahmad The Terrible", and "New Orleans Strut". CD

Lightnin Hopkins at his best – a set that rings out with all his bold electric tones on the guitar, yet which also has the moody, stripped-down feel of a blues recording from a few decades before! The electricity really does a lot to deepen the tone – both in the echo from Hopkins' guitar, and in the way his vocals stretch out in the same space! There's no other backing at all – which makes for a moody feel, and a quality that lives up to the "folk" in the title – yet Lightnin also gives the whole thing a crackling sort of energy that's also very much in the best postwar blues mode. Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The incredible first album by Tim Maia – Brazil's greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too – given that Tim was one of the few who could match the depth of American soul and funk at the time! Yet the music here is way more than just a Brazilian version of American soul – as Tim brings in some rootsier elements from local musical styles, and even some of the trippier elements that were running through Brazilian music in the wake of Tropicalia – all to make for this heady brew of sounds that's completely unique, and completely wonderful all the way through! There's plenty of tracks here that would fit well alongside both familiar soul, and the modes of funky artists like Marcos Valle at the time – and the set also features work on guitar and backup vocals by Cassiano, who'd soon go onto become a Brazilian soul star on his own. Other group members chime in with Shider, too – in the best Clinton-directed style of the time – and the whole thing has a massive ensemble feel that's wonderful, and right up there with the well known Westbound P-Funk recordings of the time. Why this one wasn't released is a real mystery to us – but we're mighty thankful to finally have it out! Titles include "This Broken Heart", "Baby I Owe You Something Good", "Be What You Is", "I Miss My Baby", and "Rat Kiss The Cat On The Naval". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousDust On The Nettles – A Journey Through The British Underground Folk Scene 1967 to 1972 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
British folk music got really weird and wonderful at the end of the 60s – light years from the crew cut versions of The Kingston Trio, or the twangy modes of Bob Dylan wannabees – but also very different from the more rockish directions that American folk acts were taking at the time! If anything, the British artists showed an even deeper commitment to acoustic modes – and far more ancient ones than American groups had access too – a thousand year legacy of British Isles music, but reworked into an often-trippy style would find more famous iterations in groups from Fairport Convention through Current 93, and even in the Wicker Man soundtrack as well! Most of the music here is much more obscure than those references – groups that were big in the UK, but maybe didn't have as much of an impact over here during the period – which makes this 63 track box set a real treasure trove of discovery – filled with many tunes we'd never heard before, and put together in a very special way. Titles include "Black Girl" by Mary Anne, "Till The Morning Comes" by Dando Shaft, "Roses For Columbus" by Mark Frhy, "Love Is A Funny Thing" by Spyrogyra, "Come All You Travellers" by Wight, "Willow's Song" by Nagnet, "Cruious Crystals Of Unusual Purity" by Bridget St John, "Prisoners Victims Strangers Friends" by Paper Bubble, "Gabilan" by Duncan Browne, "Meeting By The Moonlight Mill" by Dry Heart, "Silence Returns" by Beau, "Me & My Kite" by Fuschia, "The Colour Is Blue" by Country Sun, "Welcome To The Citadel" by Marc Brierley, "Garden Song (demo)" by Bill Fay, and "Upon Reflection" by Heron. Very early work from the Jamaican scene – a set that includes cuts by artists who'd later record classic tracks in the rocksteady years, but who here are working in a much different mode! The title is plenty apt, but only gets at part of the sound – as this isn't straight doo wop as you'd know from the American scene, but instead some early group harmony – of the sort that would flourish even more strongly on famous Jamaican trio recordings of the late 60s – handled here with much more stripped-down instrumentation, and a shifting set of rhythms that mixes US influences with other more Caribbean modes. Titles include "Muriel" by Alton & Eddie, "Dearest Darling" by Jiving Juniors, "Til The End Of Time" by Chuck & Dobby, "Dearest Beverly" by Jimmy Cliff, "Heavenly Angel" by Laurel Aitken, "Do You Know" by Owen & Millie, "I'm Going Back" by The Charmers, "Diamonds & Pearls" by Dobby Dobson, and "Album Of Memory" by The Mellowlarks. A wonderfully groovy set – every bit as great as you might guess from the title and the cover – and the very first installment in the now-legendary Mood Mosaic series! The set's one of the few to bring together tunes from the groovier side of the spectrum at the end of the 60s – work from British, French, American, and German sources – all awash in a great blend of funky, easy, and pop-oriented modes! There's a nicely trippy feel throughout – and titles include "Hascisch Party" by George Garvarenz, "Kiss This" by Claude Denjean, "Acka Raga" by Shocking Blue, "Mas Que Nada" by Luiz Enriquez, "En Melody" by Serge Gainsbourg, "Love For Sale" by Marian McPartland, "Batucada" by Phil Crewe, "Marins Armins Amant Ou Maris" by Michel Legrand, and "Sitar Beat" by Klaus Doldinger. Synthonic (Italy), Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Luaka Bop/Stones Throw, Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level – and really open up your ears! Titles include "Keleya" by Moussa Doumbia, "Love's A Real Thing" by The Super Eagles, "Minsato Le Mi Dyihome" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey, "Porry" by Sorry Bamba, "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & The Black Company, "Sanjina" by Orchestre Regional De Kayes, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, and "Zinabu" by Bunzu Sounds. There's an apple on the cover, and an apple in the name – and this British group Apple maybe owes a bit to late 60s Beatles material on Apple Records – but only in the way that they both had greatness recorded during the same time period! Apple are maybe a bit more lean, with some of the mix of psych and beat group elements that we love in The Creation – tunes that are short, focused, and catchy – but which also pack plenty into a small space too – maybe also like the energy of The Move at their start! The production is great – lots of nice stuff happening around the edges, which sounds especially great on the strong piano lines that dominate many tunes – really making the group sound a bit different than other groups that lead with the guitar – although Apple has plenty of greatness in that aspect too! Titles include "Let's Take A Trip Down The Rhine", "Doctor Rock", "The Otherside", "Mr. Jones", "Queen Of Hearts Blues", "Rock Me Baby", "Buffalo Billycan", "Psycho Daisies", and "Pretty Girl I Love You". Funky genius galore – a massive package that brings together both the complete studio and live recordings by the Average White Band – plus some great surprises as well! The group are the stuff of legend – an overseas combo, but one with a groove so tight they were able to get plenty of play on American soul radio stations back in the 70s – and continued to live on long and strong for decades afterwards, thanks to heavy samples of their music by other generations, and a longtime love of their groove by fans of classic funk and soul! And even into the 80s, the group continued to sound great – shifting to a cool, compressed groove that made for some excellent steppers – while still sticking to the funk at their core. The box set contains all of that work, and more – all studio albums, and their double-length live set – plus a full bonus CD of mixes and rarities too. Titles include the CD debut of On The Strip – plus the albums Show Your Hand, Average White Band, Put It Where You Want It, Cut The Cake, Soul Searching, Person To Person, Benny & Us, Warmer Communications, Feel No Fret, Shine, Volume 8, Cupid's In Fashion, and Selected 12" Mixes & Rarities. 133 tracks in all – with a bonus book of images and text, including reflections on the music from the group's Hamish Stuart and Alan Gorrie. Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A late 70s return to glory for the Captain – and a set that has a bit of a checkered path, in that it was originally done for Frank Zappa's Discreet label as the album Bat Chain Puller – then was held back, and mostly re-recorded for this seminal release on Warner Brothers! The set shows all the grown that Don Van Vliet had undergone during the decade – and also echoes his previous collaboration with Zappa – served up with instrumentation that is wonderfully complex, but still quite personal and earthy – a blend of composition, improvisation, and individuality that almost has Beefheart rivaling the work of Hermeto Pascoal during the decade, yet in a very different mode – given his vocal styles and occasional spoken musings! The Cap sings, plays harmonica, and blows soprano sax – alongside Jeff Moris Tepper on slide guitar and spell guitar, Bruce Lambourne Fowler on trombone, Eric Drew Friedman on Fender Rhodes and bass, Art Tripp III on marimba and percussion, Robert Arthur Williams on drums, and Richard Redus on slide guitar, bottleneck guitar, fretless bass, accordion, and guitar. Great 2CD version – remastered from the original tapes, with much better sound than previous versions. CD

Yale University Press, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic set of photographs taken from the American road of the late 60s and early 70s – images collected on road trips by artist Jim Dow, who's got an especially strong eye for the sorts of things that might not stand the test of time! The images here are mostly of signs – and most of the signs are pretty darn unusual – odd images of poorly-painted figures used in local advertisements, weather-worn text for shuttered spots, and fading neon tubes that have somehow lasted longer than the beaten-down signs on which they are hung. All these images are presented in brilliant black and white, and the book stands not just as a unique set of roadside objects pull from all parts of the country – but also a glimpse at a long-gone America that was already fading fast at the time when Dow took these photographs. Book is fabric-bound hardcover, 120 pages in all. Book

A British group, but one who also bring in a bit of American straightforwardness as well – mostly in the way they strip down the vibe of the record, harmonize their vocals, and go for an approach that avoids some of the overblown modes of their contemporaries! There's definitely some great hard rock guitar in the mix – played by Les Nicol, who can really tear it up – yet the whole thing also has a way of sounding nicely different than late psych or nascent prog, maybe in part because of the American production and the album's initial release only in the US. Titles include "My Poor Mary", "Matthew", "Mark", "Luke", "John", "High In The Tower Of Coombe", and "Methuselah". Heavy funk from Japan's Soul Media combo – and one of the group's great 70s outings with the engimatic Sammy on vocals! Sammy's got this raw, raspy style that might owe a bit to Janis Joplin at times – but also nods strongly to the work of the American underground at others – more than able to stretch out with the fierce sounds of the group on the record, especially when they take on some trippy or more freaked-out styles! The drums are often nice and bold, and the electric instrumentation is very well integrated with a tight horn section that gives the tunes plenty of punch – and titles include "After Noon", "On The Grass", "Wandering Birds", "Parajika", and "Hyakunen Tattara". Argentine rock, recorded in Paris during the early 70s – a really unusual expatriate album that comes off with a sound that's pretty unique! Miguel Abuelo clearly draws inspiration from the heavier rock that was showing up in South America at the time – yet the overall execution of the record also shares some of the warmer, more optimistic qualities that marked some of the French groups during the period – occasional folksy elements, and a post-68 positivity that holds on even when things get somewhat trippy and jammy. Instrumentation is heavy on guitars – both acoustic and electric – and the longer tracks really take off with some wild sounds, especially when bits of moog or electronics are dropped into the mix. MPS (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
CD
