DeodatoOs Catedraticos – Ataque ... CD
Equipe/Far Out (UK), 1965. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
An organ bossa classic from the legendary Eumir Deodato – one of his strongest albums from his early years in Brazil! There's a very jazzy feel to the set all the way through – thanks to a tightly arranged group that not only features the organ and percussion you might expect from such a date, but which also features some great horn work as well! Trombone, tenor, and baritone sax all get in some nice licks – and Deodato's organ cooks wonderfully throughout, often with a quick-stepping bossa jazz sound that really keeps things lively. Titles include "O Sol Nascera", "Samba Do Dom Natural", "Terra De Ninguem", "E Bom Parar", and "Ataque". CD

Eumir DeodatoOs Catedraticos 73 (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Equipe/Far Out (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A rare Brazilian album from the legendary keyboardist Deodato – recorded right around the same time as his classic CTI albums Prelude and Deodato 2 – but much more obscure! This set's got a similar electric vibe, but is much more compact – with maybe more organ than Rhodes, on tunes that are short, groovy, and very much to the point – graced with the kind of arranging genius that Eumir showed during the bossa nova years, but with a lot more soul and funk elements in the mix! The whole thing's very unique – not like any other Deodato album – and it was partly recorded in New York, with help from Phil Bodner and Romeo Penque on saxes and flute, and trumpet from Marvin Stamm. Titles include "Arranha Ceu" – a remake of his "Skyscrapers" – plus "Puma Branco", "Extremo Norte", "Menina", "O Jogo", "Flap", "Atire A 1a Pedra", and "Carlota E Carolina". LP, Vinyl record album

PopsFeliz Natal ... CD
Equipe/Discobertas (Brazil), 1969. New Copy ... $16.99
A wild little record from this groovy Brazilian group of the 60s – a set that's part Christmas, but which also has an appeal that works for every month of the year – as The Pops bring together surf-styled guitar with organ lines and jaunty rhythms – which makes the whole thing almost feel like a garage album of Holiday hits! The songs are all instrumental, and follow the style of the other great Pops records on Equipe – not quite jovem guarda, but also not entirely Anglo garage instrumentals either. You'll recognize most of the tunes, but they're done in a very nice way – and titles include "Boas Festas", "Noite Feliz", "O Tannenbaum", "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Natal Das Criancas", and "O Bom Velhino". PopsPops (1969) ... CD
Equipe/Discobertas (Brazil), 1969. New Copy ... $16.99
The Pops are playing in the nude on the cover, with hair that's hit the hippie norm for 1969 – but the group are still very strongly in their best guitar instrumental mode of the mid 60s – very much a Brazilian answer to some of the surf giants of the American scene during the early 60s! Electric guitar is in the lead on every instrumental track, with swirling organ lines right behind – and the rhythms are tight and lively, but also loose enough to follow the best spirit of the nicely varied songs chosen for the set – which include Brazilian numbers "O Forasteiro", "Branca", "Despertar Da Montanha", "Sons De Carrilhoes", and "Esfinge" – plus a few medley numbers of other tunes too. ✨✧ JulinhoO Som Do Julinho ... CD
Equipe/Whatmusic (UK), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet set of Brazilian jazz from the end of the 60s – a really great little album that features organ work by a young Dom Salvador! The record bubbles along in a gentle groove that's partly bossa, but which also borrows a lot from some of the more lyrical American work of the time – particularly some of the small combos grooving in and around the LA scene of the 60s, especially those that were willing to mix up the rhythms to achieve some interesting results! The group's led by trumpeter Julio Barbosa, whose lead work on the instrument mixes nicely with the album's sweet organ licks – making for a groove that's nicely compressed and really compelling. Titles include "Tema P'ra Amigo", "E Nada Mais", "Carolina", "Travessia", "Roda Viva", "Caminhando", and "Menina Flor". CD

✨✧ VariousCapital Revolution – Le Canzoni Che Hanno Cambiato Il Mondo ... CD
Universal (Italy), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Yet here, the time is 1968, the place the Italian scene – illustrated in a set of 42 tracks by artists who include Equipe 84, Caterina Caselli, Gianno Morandi, The Byrds, Beach Boys, I Dik Dik, I Nomadi, The Who, Lucia Dall, Temptations, The Band, The Rokes, Lugi Tengo, I Camaleonti, Buffalo Springfield, Velvet Underground, Otis Redding, Francoise Hardi, Giorgio Gaber, Fabrizio De Andre, Canned Heat, New Trolls, The Monkees, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mina. Even includes "I Sole E Di Tutti" by Stevie Wonder – an Italian version of "A Place In The Sun"! CD
