The Equals were a mixed race rock group out of the UK during the late 60s, and although they're probably best remembered for their hit "Baby, Come Back", this full album also has them playing a number of cuts that have a deep, soulful, bass-heavy groove that goes way beyond their big single. A synthy soul funk project from the team of Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo – a set that's just trippy enough – and it's possibly the best full length from either party, ever! You don't need us to tell you that DM has had a finger in a handful of the best fringe pop/leftfield hip hop projects of the mid 00s, and Cee-Lo has been threatening to deliver a strange soul classic for years – and he brings it with Gnarls Barkley. The sound runs from stuttering synth funk, to bubbling hip hop soul, to funky modern pop in a way that equals any other genre blending cats out there – and probably betters them! One of the most beautiful records that either Roscoe Mitchell or Anthony Braxton recorded in the second half of the 70s – an amazing set of duets that seems to instantly take both musicians back to their AACM roots! Mitchell had recorded in this style a few times around the date of the session – but the presence of Braxton really makes for something amazing, especially in the way that the musicians split the set between compositions they each created. Mitchells songs take up all of side one – and have this textural quality that's beautiful – and the second half of the record features some of Braxton's musical equations, but of a variety that's maybe more spiritual than usual. Titles include "Five Twenty One Equals Eight", "Cards Three & Open", "Line Fine Lyon Seven", "Composition 40Q", "Composition 74A", and "Composition 74B". CD features one bonus alternate take, too. A very dynamic set from bassist Jason Roebke – a set that uses graphic scores to direct improvsations by the members of the quartet, who are a very tightly-matched group of players, very able to deliver on Roebke's musical vision! The lineup features some especially great work on clarinet and saxes from Ed Wilkerson – a player we haven't heard as much of in recent years, but who still has the bright fire and imagination that first made us fall in love with his bold music decades ago – and the group also features lots of dark-tinged piano from Mabel Kwan, a player whose depth offsets Wilkerson's energy beautifully. The group also features Marcus Evans on drums, a player who can shake things up in all the right ways – on titles that include "Pulse & Tone", "Quarter Note Equals Eighty", "Stability & Coda", "Piano Spacer", "Four Spheres", and "Starting & Stopping". A legendary moment in European free jazz – performances all recorded on a single Sunday in 1969 – but which stand as some of the most powerful music of the time! The vibe here is often in the best spirit of early FMP, or maybe the most outside work of MPS – and the recording quality equals the best avant jazz on both labels – with very long performances on each track that represent the pinnacle of all players involved! One side alone is worth the price of admission – a searing track titled "Finally", performed by an octet with Peter Brotzmann at the helm, alongside Evan Parker on tenor and soprano sax, Fred Van Hove on piano, Paul Rutherford on trombone, Peter Kowald on bass, and Pierre Favre on drums. Favre returns on "Let's Talk About The Weather" – played by a trio with Kowad on bass and Irene Schweizer on piano. Other tracks include "Five To Five" and "Gluga Gluga Blues" by the Joki Freund Quintet, "In Memory Of John Coltrane" by Marion Brown, "Vibration" by the group of saxophonist Joe Fiera and trombonist Ed Kroger, and "Circus Live" by a quartet led by Rolf Kuhn on electric clarinet, with Joachim Kuhn on piano and Stu Martin on drums. Great early work from Lake – playing here in a number of different settings, but always with well-matched collaborators! 3 tracks on the set – "Owshet", "Heavy Spirits", and "While Pushing Down Turn" – featuring Lake with Olu Dara on trumpet, Donald Smith on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and Stafford James on bass, playing in sort of a freebop mode. Three more tracks – "Movement Equals Creation", "Intensity", and "Altoviolin" – feature Lake on alto, playing with a violin trio that sounds very dark and moody. "Rocket" is a trio piece, with Joseph Bowie and Charles Bobo Shaw – and "Lonely Blacks" is a somber solo sax piece. LP, Vinyl record album
