Lady DonliEnjoy Your Life ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99
The cover's got the look of a vintage set from the West African scene of the early 80s – and Lady Donli steps out here with an equally classic mode at times – but the set's also very contemporary at others, and really grabs our attention right away! The Lady's got a great style – mixing her own great vocals with rhythms that are heavy on acoustic percussion, but also have some great keyboards and other electric elements too – all nice and lean, and wrapped together with soul-drenched energy that maybe makes the set one of our favorite Afro funky titles in recent years! There's an occasional kick in the rhythms, but the tracks aren't straight club numbers either – as they really hold onto a funky core, and come together with a vibe that sets Lady Donli apart from the rest – and balance things out with some mellower numbers in English that feel more like contemporary Cali soul. The whole thing is really fresh, and with a true sort of universal soul that's so different than other records of this nature – on titles that include "Classic", "Bite The Dust", "With The Kindness", "Good Time", "Boomerang", "Answers", "Zaman Lafiya", "Around", "The Forbidden", and "Never Ending". Sidney Joe QuallsI Enjoy Loving You (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Dakar/Demon (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Classic work from this massively overlooked 70s soul singer! The set's one of a rare few albums cut by Sidney Joe Qualls – a fantastic talent who's probably better known for his work behind the scenes, and as a songwriter, than he is as a voice on his own. The session is produced with a style that kind of mixes Brunswick Chicago soul with rootsier southern elements – stepping proud in the 70s territory of Johnnie Taylor or Tyrone Davis, but sounding way way better here, and with a much more independent vibe. Plus, the album boasts some incredible material – original tunes written by the likes of Sam Dees, Clifford Davis, George Davis, and others. Titles include "Shut Your Mouth", "Run To Me", "I Enjoy Loving You", "Please Help Me", "Can't Get Enough of Your Love", and "The Next Time I Fall in Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Gerald WigginsRelax & Enjoy It – Jazz Piano Moods By Gerry Wiggins ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1962. Used ... $19.99
Relax, but not in a sleepy sort of way – because Gerald Wiggins really hits a great little groove on this record – one that bounces along with a soulful undercurrent that keeps things fresh, and still lets him soar on the keys when he wants to! Rhythm is by the team of Joe Comfort on bass and Jackie Mills on drums – but both players really take a back seat to Wig, who's in fine fine form here, and really at home in the comfortable Contemporary Records setting. Titles include "Narcissus", "Just Squeeze Me/Satin Doll", "Serenade In Blue", "Blue Wig", and "The Lady Is A Tramp". CD

Sinecure/Now Again, 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $7.99 17.98
An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! The book is a painstakingly researched collection – and this soundtrack is just as carefully put together – with a great range of styles – heavily steeped in freaky funk, upbeat boogie, acid folk, offbeat psych, and trippy jazz! The range of sounds is really wonderful – with a feel that's somewhere between a Trunk Records or Finders Keepers compilation – and titles include "Intro (Excerpt)" by The Muzzy Band, "Spacing Out" by The Invaders, Diska Limba Man" by Medico Doktor Vibes, "Music Slave" by Jade, "White Panther" by Arcesia, "Never Come Back" by Boa, "ESP Switch" by Michael Farneti, "6.4 = Makeout" by Gary Wilson, "Just To Say Goodbye" by Russ Saul, "Cadillac Woman" by Stephen David Heitkotter, "Piledriver" by Dennis The Fox, "Old Time Feeling" by Circuit Rider, and "666" by Ray Torske. Brian AugerBrian Auger – Introspection (3CD set) ... CD
Sunset Blvd, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 28.99
Tremendous work from the legendary Brian Auger – a huge collection of work, a good deal of which is previously unreleased – and a package that makes a fantastic addition to his legendary catalog of organ and keyboard grooves! There's not much here in the way of notes – we would have loved some dates and details – but we can definitely say that our Auger-loving ears found plenty to enjoy here, as the music is from Brian's archives, put together by the man himself – and mixes some bigger hits with a lot of lesser-known material – a collection of 35 tracks that moves through all the jazzy, funky, and soulful modes that always made Brian Auger such a standout of his generation. Titles include "Isola Natale", "The Lady's In Love", "Ella", "Pavane", "Sundown", "Second Wind", "Planet Earth Calling", "Sea Of Tranquility", "Butterfly", "Whenever You're Ready", "Somebody Help Me", "I've Gotta Go Now", "Dawn Of Another Day", and "Voices Of Other Times". EMI/Capitol, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
A harmony heaven way to enjoy the Holiday! The group's version of Christmas has to be one of the best-ever recorded in rock and roll – and given the undercurrent of sadness that was coming forth in their non-Holiday hits of the period, the style here is perfect to fit the melancholy mood of the Christmas tunes – even some of the more upbeat numbers! Production is great too – beautiful enough to hold up strongly after all these years – and titles include "Blue Christmas", "Merry Christmas Baby", "Little Saint Nick", "Santa's Beard", "We Three Kings", "Frosty The Snowman", and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". James Brown recorded a few different Christmas records back in the 60s – but this stunner may well be the best of the bunch – a killer record that not only fills the need for James Brown Holiday tunes, but which also more than lives up to his non-Christmas gems for King Records too! There's a nice mix of funk and soul throughout – and the album features the incredible hit "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto", plus the funky "Tit For Tat", the groovy "Christmas Is Coming", and the soulful "Let's Unite The Whole World at Christmas". Also features some stone-cold non-holiday cuts – like "In The Middle", "Say It Loud", and "Believers Shall Enjoy". Plus, James is standing on the front in a Santa suit – looking mighty funky! Back cover has a great set of photos – and the whole thing's Super Bad! CD

DeCastrosRockin' Beat ... LP
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A surprising little groover from the DeCastro Sisters – and a record that's a lot more playful than most of their other work! The girls are still working here in that older-styled female harmony mode that first came to prominence in the 30s and 40s – but they're also getting some hip retuning from arranger Jack Marshall, one of the most dynamic talents in the Capitol stable at the time, and an artist who always manages to bring something interesting to a record. Marshall's going for a slight "rockin" undercurrent – not one that's rock and roll, but which uses bouncing bass at the bottom, some occasional Hammond, and some nicely jazzy horns that are often heavy on the saxes – all of which make the tunes swing with a groovier feel than you might expect. Titles include "Goody Goody", "Undecided", "I Enjoy Being A Girl", "There Goes My Heart", "Them There Eyes", "I'm In Love", and "I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1974. Used ... $6.99
The second album by Larry Graham and his Graham Central Station – and as powerful a batch of LA 70s funk as you'll ever find! Graham's bass is in the lead, giving the record the same deep punch he gave the work of Sly Stone back when he was in the Family Stone – but the whole group's pretty darn tight, and the album's got some great quirky elements that come through a strongly electrified use of keyboards and vocal processing next to the bass! Think of this one as the blueprint for countless LA funk records to come – and enjoy the original grooves in titles that include "Release Yourself", "Feel The Need", "Today", "Got To Go Through It To Get To It", and the "GCS" theme. Forget everything you know about Woody Herman – and enjoy this amazing record! The album compiles sides that Woody recorded at the end of the 60s, when he was working with the Chess/Cadet team on some fantastic funky big band material. Most of the tracks feature arrangements by Richard Evans, the genius behind many of the best Chess soul recordings – and he gives the tracks a funky sound that you'd never expect from Woody Herman. The whole album's a total delight, and we never tire of listening to it – especially the version of "Ponteio", plus "The Hut", "Sex Machine", "Lancaster Gate", "Light My Fire", and a great early version of Donny Hathaway's "Flying Easy"! Hathaway also plays organ on some tracks, too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Les McCannLes McCann Ltd In New York (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A killer live set by Les McCann – and one that actually him playing with some horns! The record was cut early in McCann's career, with his Ltd trio that had Herbie Lewis on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums – plus some great guest work by Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, and Frank Haines on tenor. We can't stress how much these players add a groove to Les' group – as we always enjoy his piano playing, but find most of his trio sets a bit sleepy. Instead, this one grooves like a rare Blue Note – and the tracks are long with plenty of great solo interplay. Titles include "Cha Cha Twist", "Chip Monck", and "Maxie's Changes". CD

MinaQueen Of Italian Pop – Classic Ri-Fi Recordings 1963 to 1967 ... CD
Ri Fi/Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Fantastic work from one of the grooviest singers of the 60s – the amazing Mina, a vocalist who hardly made waves on this side of the Atlantic, but who served up a wealth of wonderful material from the Italian scene at the time! You might know Mina from a few key soundtrack contributions she made over the years – her vocal range is stunning – and arrangements here are often by important forces from the Italian cinema scene – like Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Augusto Martelli, and Bruno Canforna – all of whom give Mina these full, rich backings that really match the vivid quality of her voice! But there's also groovy elements at the core, too – styles that are similar to French or British female pop of the period – especially with some of the soul currents of the latter – but shaped differently, given both Mina's style, and the Italian language and the way it comes across in song. The package is long overdue – maybe the first-ever done for the international market on Mina's music – and as with all work on Ace, the presentation is great, with very detailed notes that will teach you plenty while you enjoy the songs – a lineup that includes "Se Telefonando", "E L'Umo Per Me", "Io Sono Quel Che Sono", "No", "Citta Vuota", "Tu Farai", "Beve Amore", "Addio", "Insensatez", "Se C'E Una Cosa Che Mi Fa Impazzire", "TA Ra Ta Ta", and "La Banda". An overlooked Motown gem from T-Boy Ross – a self-produced set that's filled with loads of 70s mellow soul moments! Ross begins the set by covering Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" – and there's definitely a similar vibe to the record – that kind of warmer grooving that Leon Ware brought to his own work for the label – sparkling and tight, yet never commercial at all – and served up with a style that's right on the money – known when to groove gently, and when to lay back and enjoy a more soulful moment too! Ross is great throughout – not as much on vocals as on his overall presentation – set up amidst nice rhythms from James Gadson on drums and Harold Johnson on keyboards. Titles include "I Want You", "I'm In Between Changes", "Smile & Be Beautiufl", "To The Baby", "Slow Down", "Forever Is As Long As It Lasts", and "Somebody's Sneaking & Peeking". CD

The only album ever recorded by Satisfaction – a wonderful British group from the key jazz rock years of the scene, but one who have a sound that's maybe more personal and intimate than the rest! These guys are never too proggy, and are only just a sextet – one that's fronted by some excellent trumpet from Mike Cotton, who'd recorded some other great work on the UK mod scene of the mid 60s – evolved here into a style that's more rocking, but also has currents of soul and funk in just the right ways – with plenty of flute, trombone, alto, and tenor – alongside vocals that are often warmly harmonized by the group, which makes for a really great approach! The songs have plenty going on, but are also nice and tight – and tunes include "Gregory Shan't", "Love It Is", "Just Lay Back & Enjoy It", "She Follows The Band", "Call You Liar Liar", "Go Through Changes", and "Cold Summer". Orchestrations are by Nelson Riddle, and the album's got a gentle swing that we really enjoy – Ed singing over some lesser known tracks, and bringing a raspy soulfulness to the more familiar ones. Titles include "What's Wrong With Me", "Golden Earrings", "I'm In Love", "Don't Ever Leave Me", and "On The Street Where You Live". LP, Vinyl record album

A great selection of future soul tracks, all handpicked by radio DJ Radhu – an American talent with ears that may well rival those of Gilles Peterson for finding the sounds we'll all enjoy tomorrow! A strangely wonderful album – Count Basie's group performing tunes by the Beatles, and doing a better job than they had on a similar Verve album from a few years before! Part of the credit goes to arranger Bob Florence, who gives the tunes a really fluid swing – with lots of cascading reed parts that soar and dip in a groovy late 60s mode that's perfect for the songs. The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. The first-ever full length collection of work from Joe Haywood – a deep soul singer with Carolina roots, but who mostly recorded for Bobby Robinson's family of labels up in Harlem – on rare singles for Fury, Enjoy, and Rampage – all of which are collected here with other great work from Haywood too! Joe's a hell of a singer – very much in the mode of Otis Redding or Percy Sledge – with a hard-burning intensity that never seems to dim at all – and which gets some great southern-styled backings throughout on these excellent tracks from the mid 60s. In fact, the material really feels like the best coming out from Stax or Atlantic at the time – and we're hard-pressed to explain why Joe never hit the big time like some of his contemporaries. The vibe is much more open than Placebo, but still shares lots of that group's great talent for mixing together jazz, funk, and trippy bits of prog – all in a way that's never too overindulgent, and always with a nice punch on most of the cuts – so that there's plenty of funky moments too! Drums are great, keeping things very interesting – and the horn passages run from Afro-styled lines with a nice exotic quality, to straighter jazz rock – augmented by some gritty vocals from time to time – in a raspy style that's kind of a 70s update of soulful UK mod styles of the previous generation. Corbett clearly loves this music, but without any sort of high ideals – none of the too-cool-for-school modes that are usually standard with the avant garde, and instead this very down to earth approach that shows the listener that they've got all the tools needed to enjoy the music themselves. The goal here (one we can totally endorse) is to bring the listener face to face with new and challenging sounds – but in a way that allows them to instantly contextualize them too – yet without having to carry years of jazz or musical experience into the process. The book is divided up into easy-to-digest sections – and penned with a surprisingly warm style too. Book

✨✧ MaishaThere Is A Place ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A record with a soaring spirit from the contemporary London scene – a fantastic full-length statement from Maisha, a group we'd heard about over the years – but are only now getting a chance to enjoy! The group's led by drummer Jake Long, but features this really tremendous work on tenor and flute from Nubya Garcia – who's got a majestic approach that's very much in the best spiritual jazz modes, but which also maybe gets a bit more personal at times too – especially on the passages with flute, which really brings a lyrical beauty to the record – and the group also features guitar, keyboards, bass, and two more percussionists! Long's rhythm progressions are nicely inventive, and very organic – and the sound is fleshed out at times by the slight addition of added strings, harp, and a bit of trumpet – all to underscore the more righteous currents in the music. Really fantastic – one that might knock Kamasi Washington off your turntable – with titles that include "Osiris", "Azure", "Kaa", "There Is A Place", and "Eaglehurst/The Palace". ✨✧ Ed TownsendNew In Town/Glad To Be Here ... CD
Capitol/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of overlooked gems from singer Ed Townsend – a talent we'd rank right up there with Jesse Belvin or Arthur Prysock in his early years! First up is New In Town – an obscure early session from Ed Townsend – an artist who's perhaps better known as a songwriter of hits for others, and slightly less as a 70s soul singer on Curtom and Casablanca! Yet here, Ed's starting out his career as a mainstream crooner – cast by Capitol as a sepia Sinatra, and even working with arrangements from Frank's Capitol mainstay, Nelson Riddle! There's a bit more drama here than you might hear on a Sinatra album – a slightly deeper range that slides towards more conventional pop vocals of the period – but the whole album's pretty darn compelling, especially the overall package. Titles include "Symphony", "I Am", "New In Town", "Goin My Way", "Till The End Of Time", "Mam'selle", "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me", and "Lover Come Back To Me". Glad To Be Here is another great album – every bit as wonderful as the first! CD

Nothing too stylish here – as Designer Records is a small indie gospel imprint, home to a surprisingly great batch of work! The collection reminds us a lot of some of the titles we've been loving from Mississippi Records – as it features gospel work that goes past the usual, often with bluesy undertones, and recorded with a very soulful edge. Arrangements are often full, but the production quality is nice and raw – and titles include "Eternal Life" and "The Life I Enjoy" by The Mosby Family Singers, "Somebody Help Me" and "Service For The Lord" by Madam Andres & The Heavenly Echoes, "New Burying Ground" and "If You Miss Me From Singing" by Union Gospel Singers, and "Beautiful Thought" and "Will The Lord Be With Me" by The Jubilee Hummingbirds. Beaty, bassy, and pretty darn electric – a great set of tracks that definitely looks at the world of 80s groove with the best vision hindsight has to offer! That is – the music is full of all the best elements of the electro soul generation – but served up without any of the tinny or clunky production that can sometimes hold back cuts from back in the day – done at a level that's a lot warmer overall, from the vocals, down to the basslines and drums! Jazzland/Northside, 2002. Used ... $4.99
The lovely vocals of Mari Boine are paired with the far-thinking production work of Bugge Wesseltoft, who also plays keyboards on the set. Bugge's presence makes for an album that's quite different than some of Mari's earlier work – a bit starker, and with less of the easy world production that's always kept us from enjoying her fully. That's not to say that the charms of earlier records are gone, or that the album's an all-out electronic affair that resembles Wesseltoft's own work – just to say that it's a strong blending of cultures with a really unique sound. Titles include "Liegga Gokcas", "Guovssahasaid Ajagattis", "Song For The Unborn", "Boadan Nuppi Bealde", and "Sarakha Vina". CD

FatbackPhoenix ... CD
Cotillion/Wounded Bird, 1984. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
Fatback flying like the Phoenix – but hardly rising from the ashes, given that the group's always on top! The sound here is a bit different – slightly leaner than before, but in a good way – with lots of core keyboards from Bill Curtis, who also handles most of the lead vocals – although as with most Fatback sets, there's plenty of sharing on that front with the rest of the group members – a bit of harmony here, a switched lead there – all keeping things nice and fresh! And this time around, there almost seems to be more of a focus on the mellower cuts, which we like a lot – because we've always enjoyed the more laidback numbers tucked in amidst the group's funkier sets – so this album's a real treat, with plenty of mellow and midtempo groovers. Titles include "The Drum Song", "Lover Man", "Call Out My Name", "You've Got That Magic", "Big Brother", "Jump Up Baby Jump Up", and "I Love You So". CD

The bold voice of a new Afro Funk ensemble – jamming hard with an intensity that matches recent work by Antibalas or The Daktaris, and which stands proudly in a tradition that runs back to Fela's best work of the 70s! The group's extremely tight, and have a good funky edge – and they've actually got a lot of jazz in their playing, especially on the sax solos, which are particularly strong. Plus, the whole thing was engineered by Gabe Roth of Daptone, so it's got a no-nonsense, all-classic sound that makes the whole thing immediately enjoyable! 6 long jammers – including "Fuss & Fight", "Donkey", "Good Noose Bad Noose", "Talk - Action = Zero", and "Watching You". Philips, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Ah, so French! Quite different than most of Michel Legrand's usual work – this one is much more of a tongue in cheek effort, featuring tunes that have a jaunty French-like sound – sort of served up for the American audience – with narration by Charles Boyer, in a Maurice Chevalier-type style. The whole thing's more kitschy than romantic, as is Legrand's other work from the time – but enjoyable nonetheless, and works well as an album. Paul MauriatNoel (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Vocalion (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $18.99
A rare Christmas album from French maestro Paul Mauriat – presented with a style that's maybe a bit more lush and scented with the season than some of his other albums of the time! The strings are a bit fuller, and the rhythms more laidback – so that the overall vibe is more in the best Christmas orchestral mode of the 60s – and a bit less like some of Mauriat's famous instrumental pop. Still, the approach is a nice one for those late hours after the party – when the fire's still going in the fireplace, and you're sitting around with the last few visitors enjoying a nightcap. Titles include "Rin Rin", "Among The Cattle & Grey Donkey", "Adeste Fideles", "Silent Night"," White Christmas", and "Little Father Christmas". Robert MitchumThat Man Robert Mitchum, Sings ... LP
Monument, 1967. Sealed ... $19.99
A wealth of tracks by Robert Mitchum! That's right, THE Robert Mitchum – actor who starred in a wealth of classic noir and action films, a consummate hipster who fancied himself to be quite a singer. A set of more obscure numbers from the late 60s, country and western tunes recorded in Nashville, mostly during the spring of 1967. Mitchum's easy-going style actually works quite well on the tunes – drawling along with a boozy finish that's somewhere in the same territory as Dean Martin's country work, but a bit rougher. Bob's not the greatest singer in the world, but overall, his presentation of the material is quite enjoyable – and proof that he's one of the most compelling figures to ever grace the silver screen. A really striking live set from singer/songwriter Biff Rose – a real contrast to his better-known record on Tetragrammaton – thanks to a loose and free presentation of the material! Biff's talking here as much, if not more than, he's singing – and the audience at The Bitter End is clearly very much enjoying the whole experience – exploding with laughter at Biff's interjections, and really urging him onward to new tangents. Plus, there's clearly some editing done here – in a way that only further makes the whole thing seem a bit crazy – but in a good way, very Rose-esque! Shango Dance BandShango Dance Band ... CD
Comb & Razor, Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Insanely wonderful work from Shango Dance Band – a group headed by onetime Fela Kuti bandmate Ojo Okeji – whose bass work here is worth the price of admission alone! Okeji was a key part of Fela's Koola Lobitos, until leaving the group in 1968 – and taking some of the best players with him – to form the amazing Shango Dance Band, which is this incredible bridge between older Afro jazz modes and the new funk styles to explode in the 70s! At some level, the groove's a bit like that which Fela was percolating at the start of the 70s – but there's also some jazzier currents on the horn solos, especially the trumpet – and Okeji's bass is very far up in the mix – dipping, turning, and crafting these amazing grooves throughout – with a snakey vibe that's completely sublime – as is the entire record. And sure, there have been plenty of Afro Funk reissued on the market in the past decade or so – but few as essential as this one – or as enjoyable! Titles include "Position Pass Power", "Women Are Great", "Son Of Thunder", "Alupandu Gbe", and "I Need Your Love". CD

Not the usual sort of Nigerian sounds you'd hear on a collection focused on Lagos – and instead, music that was recorded far from the central city of the nation – often with a much rootsier vibe overall! These tunes still have plenty of funk and jazz in the mix, but they often come across with a more freewheeling, collaborative vibe – as if you've stumbled upon a group jamming in some back alley spot, really enjoying each others' company while they create some magical music. Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. A record that seemed to open the music of Peter Brotzmann up for a whole new generation of listeners – in part because it features the European legend on an American label that got him some of the widest circulation he'd enjoyed here in years – and also in part because drummer Hamid Drake provides a very different foil for his music! The sound is almost an imaginary 70s meeting between the FMP and loft jazz scenes – with Hamid offering up these beautifully rich tones on standard drums, frame drum, and tablas – while Brotzmann blows tenor, alto, tarogato, and e flat clarinet – often with a sound that's searing, but more soulful than usual too – especially on some of the more spacious, open moments on the record.
