✨✧ Jim Reeves/Elvis Presley/Perry Como/Johnny Cash/Andy WilliamsChristmas Classics (Twelve Songs Of Christmas/Elvis' Christmas Album/Perry Como Christmas Album/Johnny Cash Family Christmas/Andy Williams Christmas Album) (5CD set) ... CD
Legacy/Sony (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $4.99
A host of classic Christmas albums – all packaged together here in mini LP-styled sleeves! First up is Twelve Songs Of Christmas – a set that has the warm voice of Jim Reeves making these holiday tunes sound mighty nice – especially considering that the arrangements here are by Bill Justis and Chet Atkins! Jim may not be our favorite country artist on other material, but he does a great job of sending these tunes home for the holidays with his paternalistic approach and a genuine warmth. Titles include "Jingle Bells", "An Old Christmas Card", "Senor Santa Claus", "Blue Christmas", "Mary's Little Boy Child", "Silent Night", and "Oh Come All Ye Faithful". Next is the 1957 Elvis' Christmas Album – a set that had RCA Records wisely rushing the young singer into the studio to cut a host of Christmas tunes – which ensured that Elvis would be spinning on the turntable for many seasons to come! Titles include "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Silent Night", "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and "Santa Bring My Baby Back". The Perry Como Christmas album is a late 60s classic – and we can't think of anyone we'd rather have sitting round the Christmas tree than ol' Perry Como! The guy's more relaxed, laidback, trusting, and honest than any of our old relatives combined – and all of his old barber charm comes through perfectly on this late 60s set of Christmas tunes arranged and conducted by Nick Perito. Perry's got the Ray Charles Singers behind him on backing vocals, and titles include "Silver Bells", "Toyland", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Christmas Eve", "There Is No Christmas Like A Home Christmas", and "Do You Hear What I Hear". The Johnny Cash Family Christmas album features work from Johnny, plus friends and relatives – a lineup that includes June Carter, Tommy Cash, Carl Perkins, and Larry Butler! The format's nice, too, with a bit of dialogue between some of the tracks – amidst tunes that include "King Of Love", "Jingle Bells", "Christmas Time's A Comin", "Christmas With You", "Christmas As I Knew It", "Merry Christmas Mary", "An Old Fashioned Christmas", and "When You're Twenty One". The Andy Williams Christmas Album features Christmas goodness from the man who really knew how to warm up the TV set during the Holiday season – a singer who virtually owned the TV airwaves at the time this record was cut, taking the masculine mantle from Perry Como – and delivering a similar sense of comfort and calm during the month of December! Titles include "Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season", "The Christmas Song", "A Song & A Christmas Tree", "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells", "O Holy Night", "The First Noel" – and Andy's long-running Christmas classic, "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year". Frank Sinatra/Phil Spector/Elvis Presley/Bing Crosby/Ella FitzgeraldChristmas Tale – Timeless Classic Albums (Jolly Christmas/Christmas Gift To You/Christmas Album/Merry Christmas/Swinging Christmas) (5CD set) ... CD
Vinylogy (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $12.99
A great set of Christmas classics – five albums, each represented with LP-styled artwork in a box of 5 CDs! First up is Jolly Christmas by Frank Sinatra – one of the greatest Christmas albums of the 20th century – a rich tapestry of sadness and longing from Ol' Blue Eyes himself! Sure, most folks think that Christmas albums are supposed to be cheery and celebratory – but Frank, coming off of his best Wee Small Hours years at Capitol, rightly chose the sadder side of Christmas – and put together an album full of songs that really get at the bluer side of the holiday. Side one of the set includes some tremendous secular songs – the kind of mid-century tunes that often had a dark undercurrent of separation and unfulfilled desire – masquerading as holiday tunes, but in Frank's hands, coming off more like smokey late night tunes of lost love and wasted life. Side two's got some more spiritual-oriented tunes – but again, done by Frank, with arrangements by Gordon Jenkins, these tunes come off with a lot less celebratory spirit than you'd expect. Titles include "The Christmas Waltz", "Mistletoe & Holly", "The Christmas Song", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear", and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". Next is A Christmas Gift To You – Phil Spector's classic Christmas album – a swirling delight of 60s pop and soul numbers, still one of the greatest full Christmas LPs ever recorded! The whole thing is wonderful – a mix of soul, rock, and pop – all produced with that classic "wall of sound" style that made Phil Spector such an early production genius in the 60s! The music is from those magical times when boundary-busting art and craft were mixed perfectly with pop styles that anyone could instantly fall in love with – and titles include "Frosty The Snowman" by The Ronettes, "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans, "Marshmallow World" by Darlene Love, "Sleigh Ride" by The Ronnettes, "Winter Wonderland" by Darlene Love, "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town" by The Crystals, and "Silent Night" by Phil and other artists on the set! Next is Elvis Christmas Album – an early Holiday gem from Elvis Presley – a set that had RCA Records wisely rushing the young singer into the studio to cut a host of Christmas tunes – which ensured that Elvis would be spinning on the turntable for many seasons to come! Titles include "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Silent Night", "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and "Santa Bring My Baby Back". Next is Merry Christmas from Bing Crosby – which may well be THE Christmas album of the 20th century – a 50s issue of 40s singles cut by Der Bingle, packaged in a cover with a classic cover image that's ensured that the record stayed in print for dozens of Decembers in years to come! Given that Bing virtually owned Christmas on TV during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the album's place in popular music is well-earned – and honestly, Bing's "aw shucks, I'm just reg'lar folks" sort of approach to these tunes really helped create a kind of common man secular side to the Holidays that forever transformed America's celebration of the season. Or maybe we're going to far with this one . . . But whatever the case, the album's a standard, and one we were certainly raised on. Titles include "Silver Bells", "Jingle Bells", "Silent Night", "White Christmas", "Adeste Fideles", "Faith Of Our Fathers", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", and "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas". Last up is Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
A great look at the Elvis Presley universe – not sounds by the King himself, but music that first inspired his creations – and other songs that have contemporary artists inspired by the records that Presley was releasing during the early years of his career! The collection is fantastic – a great sideline to the famous sounds of Elvis and Sun Records – and there's a really great range of material included throughout, all supported by very detailed notes that really show the thought and care that went into the selection of tracks. The whole thing is as vibrant and colorful as the image on the cover – and titles include "All Shook Up" by David Hill, "Just Because" by The Shelton Brothers, "Baby Let's Play House" by Vince Taylor, "King Creole" by Dick Penrose, "Hard Headed Woman" by Paul Rich, "Baby I Don't Care" by Rodney Scott, "I Beg Of You" by Jimmy Lane, "Hot Dog" by Young Jessie, "I Need Your Love Tonight" by Col Joye & The Joy Boys, "Love Me" by Billy Williams Quartet, "Paralyzed" by Mickie Most & His Playboys, and "Mystery Train" by Vernon Taylor. Ann-MargretAnn Margret – The Definitive Collection ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99 22.99
A fantastic collection of work from those years when singer Ann-Margret first popped up on the American market – young, fresh, and sexy – and willing to do whatever it took to make her music stand out from the pack! Ann-Margret's got a vocal range that's maybe deeper than most of her contemporaries – a lusty growl that makes you feel like she's singing from way down in her toes – with odd bluesy currents mixed with jazzier backings – all in a mode that has really blows away the sultry tones of previous singers like Peggy Lee or Julie London. This 30 track package is a very well-chosen array of tunes from the early RCA years – and includes lots of solo numbers, plus work with Elvis Presley and Al Hirt – on titles that include "Man's Favorite Sport", "Next Time", "Madrid/The Pleasure Seekers", "Mack The Knife", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", "Teach Me Tonight", "The Lady Loves Me", "You're The Boss", "Mr Wonderful", "That Old Black Magic", "Everything Makes Music When You're In Love", "Let Me Entertain You", "Take All The Kisses", "Something To Think About", and "Mister Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Polydor/Light In The Attic, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A record filled with cover images that run from Richard Nixon to Elvis Presley, to Mick Jagger, Caetano Veloso, Chairman Mao, Jorge Ben, Jimi Hendrix, and Andy Warhol – and a set whose sound definitely seems to live up to such heady company from the 20th century! Erasmo Carlos is at his inventive best here – very playfully creative, yet in a way that refines his style from his trippier years – almost a reinvention of the singer's approach for a new generation of MPB – in a manner that some of the Tropicalia artists were doing at the time. The songwriting and production are great – and if the album were in English, it may well have been a global hit (although it did pretty well at home back in Brazil!) – and titles include "Mane Joao", "Largo Da Segunda Feira", "Sabado Morto", "E Proibido Fumar", "Preciso Encontrar Um Amigo", and "Mundo Cao". Carl PerkinsDiscovering Carl Perkins – Eastview, Tennessee 1952/1953 (10 inch LP & CD) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), Early 50s. New Copy ... $34.99 39.99
Very early work from Carl Perkins – so early, in fact, that these tracks not only predate his important rockabilly classics at Sun Records, they also predate the rise of Elvis Presley as well! The music is raw and rocking right from the start, and the emergence of these sides may well have Perkins get credit for being one of the true originators of a sound that so many others would copy – and in one of the key examples, the set features a version of "Good Rockin Tonight" that was recorded a few years before Elvis touched the track! The rest of the collection is equally great – with titles that include "Drinking Wine Spo Dee O Dee", "There's Been A Change In Me", "Devil's Dream", "Gone Gone Gone (alt take 1)", "Sure To Fall (alt take 1)", and "Prekins Wiggle/Dixie Bop (alt take 1)". Special 10" album comes with a bonus CD that includes all the material – and a 16 page booklet of notes! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy SweeneyWithout You (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
ORG, Late 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-issued work from Jimmy Sweeney – a singer who's maybe best known for a demo recording that supposedly caught the ear of Elvis Presley – but who is more than fantastic here enough on his own! Sweeney has this nice way of pitching his vocals – able to rise in tone, in a way that would become more familiar during the soul music years – which really works great here amidst more R&B styled backings, a few of which are also maybe a bit of a precursor to country soul! Titles include "Sick Sick Sick", "Deep Blues", "I Pay With Every Breath", "Desire", "Don't Come In Here", "It Wouldn't Be The Same", "She Wears My Ring", "Gonna Find My Sweetheart", "I'll Follow You", "Lunch In A Bucket", and "Deacon Brown" – plus "Without You", the track that Elvis supposedly dug.
