Ella JenkinsLong Road To Freedom ... LP
Folkways, 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99 23.99
A beautiful set from Ella Jenkins at the dawn of the 70s – and a little bit of a step away from the children's music she was (and still is) so loved for – with stirring takes on gospel, folk and blues tunes for grown ups and kids alike...everybody with a soul! It's a nice look at a near century of great songs, much of it rising high on just the voices and acoustic guitar. She's joined by Brother John Sellers and Joseph Brewer on some songs – and titles include "The Wilderness", "I'm Gonna Tell God My Troubles", " Heaven", "Jimbo", "Another Man Done Gone", "Soft Pedal Blues", "An Old Lady And Her Horse", "Freedom's Coming Mighty Soon", "A Long Time" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes in nice heavy textured sleeve – classic Folkways style! Reissued ahead of Ella's 100th birthday.)

Ella JenkinsYou'll Sing A Song & I'll Sing A Song ... LP
Folkways, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99 23.99
A landmark for folk singer Ella Jenkins, children's music as a genre and the Folkways label! Ella is singing out front of the Urban Gateways Children's Chorus here, gently leading the kids while lifting them to the level of full on collaborators. In some ways, this sets the template for so much of the best children's music to come, especially in the folk style, but in the heart of the civil rights era with such a sweetly inclusive set of songs – from soulful spirituals to sweet novelty sing-a-longs – it's really vital work. Includes "You'll Sing A Song & I'll Sing A Song", "Cadima", "May-Ree Mack", "Did You Feed My Cow?", "Shabbat Shalom", "I Saw", "Sifting In The Sand", "Guide Me" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousRare Soul Review ... CD
Goldsoul (UK), Late 60s. Used ... $19.99
A beautiful set of hard-socking soul – put together with a focus on a Northern kind of groove, but also opening up with a wider range of styles than the usual set of that nature! The vocals here go nice and deep – and there's some especially nice inclusions of work by obscure male singers that we've loved for years on rare singles, but never fit into our CD collections. 22 tracks in all – with titles that include "My Baby Ain't No Plaything" by Willie Jones, "Monday Through Thursday" by Steve Mancha, "Mr Lonesome" by JJ Daniels, "I'm Still Yours" by Johnny Summers, "All The Way" by Danderliers, "Let Me Render My Service" by New Wanderers, "Be Proud" by Gail Anderson, "The Queen" by Big Ella, "Change Will Do You Good" by Louis Paul, "I've Settled Down" by Donald Jenkins & The Delighters, "Man Of My Word" by Salt & Pepper, "Lover Come Back" by Jackey Beavers, "Sweet Memories" by Robert Tanner, and "It's Going To Be A Tragedy" by Dusty Wilson. ✨✧ Nucleus & Ian CarrTorrid Zone – The Vertigo Recordings 1970 to 1975 (Elastic Rock/We'll Talk About It/Solar Plexus/Belladonna/Labyrinth/Roots/Under The Sun/Snakehips/Alley Cat) (6CD set) ... CD
Vertigo/Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from trumpeter Ian Carr and his Nucleus group of the early 70s – maybe one of the few jazz rock groups that was ever able to work with a fair bit of jazz in their sound! Unlike his contemporaries, who often started in rock first, then added some horns – Carr was already coming off an important 60s legacy, co-leading a group with tenorist Don Rendell – so the vibe here is like an extension of that very rhythmic, very tonal modern work – but with the addition of electrified instrumentation – thanks to the guitar work of Chris Spedding and keyboards of Karl Jenkins – who plays some fantastic electric lines throughout! The vibe is maybe a bit in the territory of early 70s electric work by Miles Davis and Donald Byrd (pre-Mizell for the latter) – but there's maybe a farther-reaching concept at play on many of the records, at a level that always helped the group cross over to the prog crowd, and move beyond just a straight jazz audience. Other key players include Brian Smith on tenor and soprano saxes – a really fantastic part of the lineup – plus Jeff Clyne on bass and John Marshall on drums – and as the albums move along a bit, the lineup shifts slightly, and also opens up to guests who include Kenny Wheeler and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Tony Levin on drums, and Norma Winstone on voice. And although some of the albums have been reissued before, this is the first set to really dive in completely – and bring together material from the Vertigo Records releases that include Elastic Rock, We'll Talk About It Later, Solar Plexus, Belladonna, Labyrinth, Roots, Under The Sun, Snakehips Etcetera, and Alley Cat.
