VariousRhythm & Bluesin By The Bayou – Livin, Lovin, & Lyin ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
A massive amount of musical discoveries from the Louisiana scene – a set that features a huge amount of unissued tracks from back in the day – but all with the kind of vibe that matches some of the best early soul and R&B on labels like Specialty, Minit, and Imperial! The wealth of sounds from the swamp state are mindblowing – because even though Louisiana gave us plenty of hits in the 50s and 60s, there was so much more talent bubbling just underneath – thanks not just to some top-shelf artists who never fully got their due – but also a great network of studios and labels too. Only a few of these tracks ever came out as singles around the time they were recorded – more were issued later on reissues in the 80s, and a lot more appear here for the first time ever – in a package that might well be the best so far in this excellent series. Titles include "Don't Know Why" by Little Nolton, "Give It Up" by Lonesome Sundown", "I Keep Crying" by Cookie & The Cupcakes, "Crying Crying" by Sticks Herman, "Baby If You Want To Play"b y James Freeman, "But You Thrill Me" by King Charles, "I Got It Made" by Guitar Jr, "Boogie With Calypso" by Joe August, "Don't Say" by Tabby Thomas, "Baby's Got Bad Feet" by Eddie Williams, "I Know" by Elizabeth, "I Would Be A Sinner" by Charles Sheffield, "Baby Baby Come To Papa" by King Carl, and "Mama's Little Girl" by Van Preston. Elia Y ElizabethAlegria ... LP
Zeida/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A totally wonderful little set from the Colombian scene of the early 70s – very different than most other music of that place at the time – and with this sunny, groovy vibe that's got a very universal appeal! Elia and Elizabeth sing in Spanish, and harmonize over these bouncy backings from Jimmy Salcedo, who mixes funky currents with these sort of post-bossa styles – a lot like some of the coolest work that was coming out of Brazil at the start of the 70s – nicely sophisticated, but always very groovy! Titles include "Caminante Soy", "Senor Manuel", "Alegria", "La Gran Cuidad", "Mis 32 Dientes", "Se Oculta El Sol Muere Una Flor", "Y Cae La Lluvia", "En Los Dias En Que Era Demasiado Joven", and "Buscandonos". ✨✧ Neil ArdleyKaleidoscope Of Rainbows – QEH 20th Oct 75 ... CD
Jazz In Britain (UK), 1976. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A rare live performance of material that was originally conceived for the Kaleidoscope Of Rainbows album by British jazzman Neil Ardley – performed here at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and with a sound and vibe that's even more striking than the famous record release of the music! The set begins with some incredible percussion – courtesy of Roger Sellers and Trevor Tomkins – almost echoing a gamelan style, with vibes and other instruments making great sounds – as electric piano and other keys come into the mix, courtesy of Geoff Castle and Dave McRae, while the sound is woven with bass guitar from Roger Sutten and guitar from Ken Shaw – all to blossom from reed contributions from Tony Coe, Brian Smith, Barbara Thompson, and Bob Bertles, topped with sublime trumpet from the great Ian Carr! The sound is wonderful throughout – even augmented by a bit of cello from Paul Buckminster – and the mix of electric and acoustic elements is very much in the best mode that made Ardley a real standout in this generation of British jazz. The suite features 16 passages in all – a great double-length set! CD

Ornette ColemanComplete Science Fiction Sessions (including Broken Shadows – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... $29.99
One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! The style here is a bit more high concept, but in a good way – with all the edges that Coleman had developed from the late 50s onward, brought into tighter focus for the Columbia setting – given a bit more complexity, although still with plenty of room for freedom – and played both with a smaller combo, and a slightly larger group. The mix of players is as striking as the sounds on the record – and includes Coleman on alto, trumpet, and violin – plus Dewey Redman on tenor, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, Cedar Walton on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell on drums. Asha Puthli sings a bit on the larger ensemble tracks – making a rare appearance here before her 70s soul career in Germany – and titles include "What Reason Could I Give", "Street Woman", "The Jungle Is A Skycraper", and "All My Life". 2CD set also features all the material from the Broken Shadows album as well – plus 3 previously unissued bonus tracks. Other titles include "Happy House", "Elizabeth", "Good Girl Blues", "Broken Shadows", "Rubber Gloves", and "Written Word". CD
(Out of print, 2000 pressing with 3 bonus tracks.)
