✨✧ Pino DonaggioCorruzione Al Palazzo Di Giustizia (180 gram red vinyl pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
BTF (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99 28.99
Some of the warmest work we've ever heard from Pino Donaggio – a great little soundtrack scored for an Italian political thriller of the mid 70s, and done with some really wonderful touches! There's a really subtle sense of drama in most of the tunes – a style that's never overblown or too orchestral – and which comes mostly from the simple juxtaposition of notes that create a deep feeling without doing much. Many themes get a bit dynamic in their rhythms – not really funky, but nicely driving – and the instrumentation features some nice keyboards tucked inside strings and woodwinds – which themselves are often used in really fresh ways too. A nicely unique soundtrack from the time – one that occasionally echoes other Italian work of the period, but which stands alone with a boldness of its own! Titles include "Tema Di Elena", "Indagine", "Al Palazzo Di Giustizia", "Solitudine", "Trasferimento", "Finale", and "Notturno". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 300 copies – on red vinyl!)

Mario Castro-NevesBrazilian Mood ... LP
Phase 4 (UK), 1973. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A unique British session from bossa maestro Mario Castro-Neves – one that's got the same sweet and jazzy touches as his 60s records, but a slightly different feel as well! The style here is totally great – kind of the same maturation of sound that Sergio Mendes was hitting in the early 70s – thanks to the right placement of a few electric elements, and a generally warm style of production that creates a great blend of modes in Castro-Neves' music. Instrumentation features keyboards, percussion, and some larger orchestrations used in very spare and creative ways – and there's often some great electric bass bubbling along the bottom to groove things up nicely. Many tracks have wordless vocals, sung in a scatting, breezy way that's even groovier than Brasil 77 – and titles include "Macumba Mood", "The Whole Mess", "Xaxado Blues", "Call Me Up", "Helena & I", "Hold My Hand", and "Loud & Clear". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing from the early 2000s – hard to find on vinyl in any format!)

✨✧ George Smith & The Chicago Blues BandBlues With A Feeling – A Tribute To Little Walter (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
World Pacific/BGO (UK), 1969. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A smoking little set from George Harmonica Smith – an album recorded in late 60s LA, but done with plenty of Chicago blues touches! The players here are all top-shelf – and include Muddy Waters on guitar and Otis Spann on piano – who definitely help keep a Windy City vibe going on the record – that spare, raw, but electrified approach to the music that was still wonderfully fresh at the time of the sessions. And Smith's vocals alone are totally great – very deeply soulful – but also alternate strongly with sharp lines on harmonica too. Titles include "Mellow Down Easy", "Key To The Highway", "You Better Watch Yourself", "Last Night", "West Helena Woman", "Tell Me Mama", "Juke", and "Everything Gonna Be Alright". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Love With A Feelin", with vocals by Lucille Spann – plus "Just A Feelin" and "Goin Down Slow". CD

VariousDave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol 5 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A long-overdue entry in this amazing series – a set of music that's gone on to be a genre unto itself, and which stands as a tribute to the song-picking genius of the great Dave Godin! The music here is a really special breed of soul – sounds that start out in the heart-worn style of southern work of the 60s, but which also expand to encompass other modes of very expressive singers – music that definitely lives up to the "deep" in the deep soul title! Godin's been gone from the planet for a number of years, but the set list is based on suggestions he had when compiling the earlier versions of the famous series – and Dave lives again in the notes, which include an interview with the soul music expert by Jon Savage. But even without the words, the music is more than enough – on titles that include "Without Love" by Ronnie Taylor, "Where Is The Party" by Helena Ferguson, "Dead" by Carolyn Sullivan, "Who Knows" by Soul City, "I Will" by Lattimore Brown, "Right Here Is Where You Belong" by Jerry Washington, "Can't Last Much Longer" by Betty Harris, "Standing At The Crossroads" by Eddie & Ernie, "What Can I Do Without You" by Linda Jones, "It's Too Late For Tears" by Rene Bailey, and "All I Want Is You" by Zilla Mayes. ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeMorricone 2001 ... CD
Dagored (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lovely Morricone! This sparkling set features 15 groovy tunes from some of Morricone's greatest soundtracks – and it's a swirling blend of bossa rhythms, light orchestral grooves, and haunting wordless vocal tracks that rank with some of his greatest work. There's some really great tracks on here that stand out as some of the few groovy ones on some of Morricone's more serious soundtracks – which makes the set even nicer, because you don't have to go out and buy the whole soundtrack if you're only interested in the groovy tune. Titles include "Nadine", "Barbalu", "Giocoso, Gicoso", "Verushka", "Belinda May", "Voce Seconda", "Immagini Del Tempo", "Come Maddelena", and "Del Mare". Great stuff, and an excellent replacement for the now out of print Mondo Morricone CDs! CD
