El RegoEl Rego ... LP
Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A trio recorded with a great texture of sounds – the guitar of Tetzui Akiyama, the drums of Nicolas Field, and the tenor of Gregor Vidic – the last of which is often blown in this careful, sound-shaping style that's a big change from the usual! Akiyama's guitar is great too – not the louder noise that might be used in an improvisational session like this – and instead a more careful approach to the subtler sonic reaches, with slow-building, soft-glowing elements that are punctuated with bolder moments from Nicolas Field. Titles include "Inner Circle", "Synchronous Ancestor", and "Wandering". CD

Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wadada Leo Smith is really on fire here – on a record that feels a lot more like something from the early 80s underground than some of his earlier work – from the lineup of performers, right down to the overall sound of the set! The group's very heavy on guitars – and features work from Michael Gregory Jackson, Henry Kaiser, Brandon Ross, and Lamar Smith on the instrument – often criss-crossing and weaving these beautiful sonic textures – powerful, but never too noisy, and augmented beautifully by some surprisingly thoughtful bass work by Bill Laswell – whose at his most subtle and collaborative here. The rest of the lineup features Pheeroan AkLaff on drums and Adam Rudolph on piano – and Wadada's trumpet really soars to the skies on the longer tracks, which include "Ornette Coleman's Harmelodic Sonic Hierographic Forms – A Resonance Change In The Millenium", "Ronald Shannon Jackson – The Master Of Symphonic Drumming & Multi-Sonic Rhythms Inscriptions Of A Rare Beauty", and "Ohnedaruth John Coltrane – The Master Of Kosmic Music & His Spirituality In A Love Supreme". Earthquake/17 North Parade, 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.99
Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". CD2 features the full album Leggo Dub – related dub material by the Ossie All-Stars – The Revolutionaries working with Ossie Hibbert on some wicked instrumentals that have plenty of core rhythms that never stray too far, while Hibbert makes magic with echo and other slight studio techniques! Titles include "Dubby Dubby", "Winners Dub", "Dub Down Babylon", "Ghetto Dub", "Brooklyn Style, "Leggo Dub", and "Doberman Skank". CD2 also features bonus tracks – "Jump & Pawn" by Clint Eastwood, "CB 200" by Dillinger, "War Of The Stars" by Ossie & The Revolutionaries, "Take A Dip" by Dillinger, and "Lik Her She Gone" by Big Joe. Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". CD

✨✧ Oregon with Elvin JonesTogether ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Drummer Elvin Jones joins the groundbreaking Oregon trio – and rather than making the set a record that's dominated by the star, Elvin nicely finds the right sort of way to really mix his talents with the group! Jones in the 70s could be pretty dynamic as a leader – but here, he's nicely open, spacious, and loose – slipping in surprisingly well next to the modal elements and global tones of the famous lineup – with Ralph Towner on guitars and piano, Collin Walcott on tablas and congas, Glen Moore on bass, and Paul McCandless on reeds. If you know Jones at all, you'll know what a really special achievement this is for him – another feather in the sometimes-overlooked cap of his real growth after the Coltrane years. Titles include "Charango", "Three Step Dance", "Le Vin", "Lucifer's Fall", "Teeth", and "Driven Omens". CD

El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two very different slices of work from the Brit easy scene at the start of the 60s – TV music from arranger John Gregory, and a set of swinging vocal sides from the great Mike Sammes Singers! Gregory dominates the first record – which is split between an album of western themes, mostly from American sources – taken at a relatively serious level with added vocals from Sammes' group. The second half of the Gregory tracks are more swinging – and feature work from The Avengers and other 60s crime/spy material. Gregory titles include "The Avengers", "Sunset Strip", "Johnny Staccato", "Route 66", "Tightrope", "Sugarfoot", "Maverick", "Bonanza", "Rawhide", and "Perry Mason". The other part of the collecvtion features excellent material from the Mike Sammes Singers – a mixed male/female group who work in a very jazzy style – clearly schooled in the vocalese of Lambert Hendricks & Ross or The Blue Stars – but also working with more of a lyrical approach, and this sprightly feel that would have been perfect on 60s TV. The arrangements are great – jazzier than they are cheesy – and titles include "Taking A Chance On Love", "Pick Yourself Up", "Passing Breeze", "Spring Spring Spring", "Nice To Know You Care", "I Know That You Know", and "Manhattan". Package also fetaures more bonus tracks from the Sammes Singers! CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A great entry in the ever-diverse catalog of guitarist Larry Coryell in the 70s – a set that has him both returning to Vanguard Records, and to more electric modes than on a few previous records – and also working with the sons of Dave Brubeck in a nicely tight mode! The album's maybe a bit more of a conventional jazz outing than Coryell at the start of the decade – given the Darius, Chris, and Dan Brubeck play acoustic piano, bass, and drums, respectively – but Larry's always changing up the rhythms and tones in these really great ways, and getting some nice inspiration from the percussion of Ray Mantilla, who's also in the group. Titles include "Mediterranean Sundance Entre Dos Aguas", "Sweet Shuffle", "Return", "Rue Gregoire Du Tour", and "Three Mile Island". CD

A very different set from Gregory Howe – an artist who you might know from jazz recordings as part of the Wide Hive Players, and on other projects for that label as well – stepping out here as a surprisingly compelling singer/songwriter in a whole new mode! Gregory supplied the lyrics for all tunes, and sings in this raspy style that's really great – offset by warmer guitar work, and some nice use of additional strings, too – gently, with production that's almost in a cool 70s mode – never overdone, and really fitting the spirit of the tunes. Titles include "The Things We Do", "Life Is Rain", "Work It Out", "Flower In The Weeds", "Chasing Shadows", "Reaching Higher", and "Concertina". CD

Virgin (UK), 1998. Near Mint- ... $8.99
One of the few later recordings by Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath – and one that was done for a major label, and almost marketed as a world music album! Despite that fact, though, the set's still very firmly in McGregor's jazzy mode of the past – yet also certainly touched by the South African musical styles of his roots – better than you might think overall, and produced by Joe Boyd with a very solid feel. The ensemble's more cohesive than in earlier years, with less of an edge on the solos – but overall, the whole thing's pretty nice. Where other compilations have focused on some lesser known but still great numbers produced by Holness (like the excellent Microphone Attack set), this one brings the favorites that rocked the dancehalls and sound systems throughout the 70s, and up through the early 80s, and features full 12" discomix versions of many tracks! 17 tracks totaling over 70 minutes of music, including "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" by Michael Rose, "Left With A Broken Heart" by Ken Boothe, "Westbound Train" by Dennis Brown, "Blood & Fire" by Niney The Observer, "Rock On" by Gregory Isaacs, and "Weeping-Water Rate" by Jr. Byles & I Roy. OregonOregon (1983) ... LP
ECM, 1983. Near Mint- ... $14.99
The Oregon sound, still alive and well into the 80s – perhaps given even more room to express itself in an ECM setting like this! The album's a mix of angular notes and warmer tones – very much the experimentalism that the group prided itself on at the time – and which really set the tune for a whole generation of imitations, some of which were already showing in the rest of the jazz world by the time of this release. Yet Oregon proves by the set that they're still the leading lights of the this side of the jazz spectrum – keeping things fresh with an ever-changing array of instrumentation from Ralph Towner, Colin Walcott, Paul McCandless, and Glen Moore. Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2000. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The long-overdue issue of the only recording by this lost Chicago/Swedish project – a massive lineup of young avant players from the start of the millenium – similar in construction to the Peter Brotzman Tentet, but working here with a very different sound! The group came together over the space of months, on both sides of the Atlantic – and really took their time to develop the album's two long compositions by Ken Vandermark and Fredrik Ljungkvist – working in amazing shades and tones that really reflect the individual personalities and strengths of the 16-member lineup. Each track spins out towards the half-hour mark – which allows lots of space for sounds from Mats Gustafsson on tenor, Ken Vandermark on clarinet and tenor, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, clarinet, and baritone (were these guys having a competition?) – plus Guillermo Gregorio on alto and clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Per Ake Holmlander on tuba, Joe Morris and David Stackenas on guitars, Sten Sandell on piano, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Kent Kessler and Johan Berthling on basses, Michale Zerang and Raymond Strid on drums and percussion, and Kjell Nordeson on drums, percussion, and vibes. There's a heck of a lot going on here – and titles include "Codeine Picasso" and "In This Very Room" – each of which have a mix of composition and improvisation that's not unlike some of the projects directed by Lonberg-Holm around the same time. Gregory PorterLiquid Spirit ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. Used ... $7.99
Gregory Porter arrives on Blue Note Records – and the result is Porter's most fully-formed set so far – just the kind of album that will push him firmly into the limelight – a place that we've felt he's deserved for quite a few years! Porter's a hell of a singer, and a hell of a songwriter too – and although his roots are in jazz, he's got a rare ability to step between genres with plenty of soul – a special space that belongs to a very rare few – like Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Roberta Flack, or Gil Scott-Heron! Gregory's voice is amazing, his lyrics are both personal and pointed – and he does so much here with so little, the album should be handed out to the hundreds of mis-directed vocalists who think that a few extra tweaks in the studio is all they really need. Most numbers just feature small combo backing, with wonderfully warm piano from Chip Crawford – and the whole thing's got a timeless feel that makes us think this is the beginning of a rich new season for Porter. Titles include "Free", "Water Under Bridges", "Lonesome Lover", "Liquid Spirit", "No Love Dying", "Brown Grass", "When Love Was King", and "Wind Song". CD

The fantastic first outing of Oregon as a quartet – recorded right after the group's initial work with the Paul Winter Consort – but not released until a decade after the material was first put down to tape! Oregon had already reached greater fame by the time of the record's issue in 1980 – but you can easily hear the fullness of their vision here, right at the start – the unusual blend of world elements and jazz – served up in a pre-ECM universe by Ralph Towner on guitars, piano, and mellophone; Paul McCandless on oboe and English Horn; Glen Moore on bass and flute; and Collin Walcott on tablas, sitar, 12 string guitar, percussion, and esraj. Gregory Porter live at London's Royal Albert Hall – backed not only by his excellent core band, but also the 60+ piece London Studio Orchestra – really pulling off a masterstroke in the way he can bring out all the lush promise of the orchestral setting while staying rooted in intimate soul! Credit conductor and arranger Vince Mendoza for the subtle finesse of the orchestra – never getting too big and lush for the sake of bigness – but it's the warmth of Gregory Porter's voice at the center that gives this such a real vibe, steering free of nostalgia on songs from his Nat King Cole & Me project while bringing grander instrumentation, but no less intimate of a vibe to songs from Porter's own songbook. Includes "Mona Lisa", "Don't Lose Your Steam", "Hey Laura", "Smile", "In Heaven", "The Lonely One", "Ballerina", "Miss Otis Regrets", "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas", "Nature Boy", "But Beautiful", "Ballerina", "For All We Know", "When Love Was King", "I Wonder Who My Daddy Is" and more. and more. 19 tracks on the CD – and it comes with the DVD of the performance, too! Schema (Italy), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a singer, working here with some wonderful grooves from Timo Lassy – an artist we've really loved for his own jazzy projects in the past! Joyce Elaine Yuille has this style that's very classic, and very groovy – jazz-based, with a nice rasp in her voice that really brings out some of the more soulful qualities in the music – and able to write her own lyrics, too – which makes for a wonderful record that's full of fresh sounds at every turn! Lassy's music is wonderful too – tightly snapping on the rhythms, but never forced – and with a jazz current that's a nice change from other contemporary soul production, which might have been added to the record with a bigger label. But clearly, the real star of the show is Joyce – a talent that will definitely be huge in years to come – a rock-solid singer and songwriter who may well turn out to be the female equivalent of Gregory Porter. Massively mellow funk – played by a cool Chicago trio that's heavy on the electric keys! The group's led by the team of keyboardist Gregory Bibb and guitarist James Norris – with the former working through a set of tasty keys that include Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and farfisa! Rhythms are lean, laidback, and nicely stripped-down – funky, but chilled out – in a kind of a groove that was years ahead of its time, and which is now only finally getting its due. There's some really heavy drums on the best cuts – hard, but with rhythms that are slightly off-kilter, in a way that makes for a really refreshing groove, even when the group's covering work by other artists. The whole thing's instrumental – with the original tracks "Brother Marcus" and "Changing Things" – plus great covers of "Love & Happiness", "Shaft", and a great version of "Ain't No Sunshine". Nice laidback funk, with a super-dope sound that's as a hip as the cover! LP, Vinyl record album

The group features drummer Gregory Saunier, and keyboardist Matt Mitchell – who plays Prophet 6, Modular, and Arp synthesizers – but all with a quality that really matches the acoustic elements in the set, especially in the change of energy that seems to come from the electric sources – shifting gears as quickly as the rhythms of Saunier, and bursting out with color to match some of Davis' freer flights on the alto! Most of the music is relatively structured, even with freer instrumental runs – and titles include "Remiges", "Alula", "Flight", "Wingbeat", "Coverts", "Vortex Generator", "Purrs", and "Landing". East CoastEast Coast (Encounter) ... LP
Encounter, 1973. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Righteous soul – and the only record ever cut by East Coast – a group led by Larry Blackmon, featuring early vocals by Gwen Guthrie! The style is very hip – a mixture of funk and progressive grooving, all held together with a sound that's young, proud, and which moves easily between influences from a number of different camps. In a way, the group's almost a cross between early Earth Wind & Fire and The Voices Of East Harlem – with a style that's got some nicely soulful jazz elements, but served up with a dose of sweeter soul. Gregory Johnson plays some great keyboards on the set, and titles include "I've Got To Reclaim You", "Something Deep Inside", "Any Thing You Have In Mind", "Miss Gigi", "Keep On Trying", "I Found You", and "You Can't Let It Get You Down". Allen GinsbergBest Minds Of My Generation – A Literary History Of The Beats (hardcover) ... Book
Grove Press, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 27.00
The story of the beat generation – from a writer who was a key part of the movement, and knew just about anyone who was worth his salt at the time! Allen Ginsberg was the poet whose work helped set first to the beat scene in the late 50s – and was one of the most well-traveled, well-connected members of the movement – which quickly becomes clear here, as you follow Ginsberg through a mix of history and memoir, often peppered with a great deal of quotations from writings of his colleagues – in chapters that look at Jack Kerouac, William S Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Lucien Carr, Neal Cassady, and many others! The book's based on a course that Ginsberg has taught over the years, and is given a stronger sense of structure by editor Bill Morgan – as things spin out over 435 pages in this hardcover edition, which also includes notes on all the works cited throughout. LesimanHere & Now – Vol 1 (with bonus CD) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $24.99
Stunning work from Lesiman – easily one of the coolest, funkiest talents on the Italian sound library scene of the 70s! The groove here is electric, funky, and often slightly trippy – with perfect use of electric bass to get things going in so many different ways, depending on the mood of the track – as things step slowly underneath cascading piano lines, or move fast under these fuzzier keyboard bits, or act nice and skittish when the drums take on more power in the mix! There's often a nice degree of echo in the recordings – used to abstract familiar instruments, but never steer them of course too much – just create these amazing sounds that still leave us breathless after all these years. Both volumes of the set are amazing – and titles on volume 1 include "Bagliori", "Impulsi", "Direzioni", "Segni Cromatici", "Le Regole Del Gioco", "Melos Blue", "Rollin", "Relazioni", "Cerchio Doppio", and "Via Nell'Autunno". A wonderful 70s session from bossa legend Lyra, and a set that's got a different sound than some of his earlier work – but one that's still plenty great overall! The mode is a bit more subdued than before – still with bossa at the roots, but also production and instrumentation that nod a bit more towards the singer/songwriter generation of the time – almost with a European feel at time. Roberto Menescal produced, and arrangements by Theo Barros have a slow-building, unassuming quality that's really great. Chico Buarque guests on the groover "Essa Passou", and other titles include "Identidade", "Rio Vermelho", "Primavera", "O Pregoeiro", "Ate Parece", and "I See Me Passing By". CD

Uptown, Mid 40s/1952. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99 24.99
Many great slices of work from the early years of pianist Dodo Marmarosa – actually the only years that had Dodo really shining in the limelight – as he made only a handful of rare recordings between 1953 and 1961! Yet these sides are equally rare – as the set brings together obscure 78rpm singles, sometimes with Dodo as the leader, sometimes working with other groups – and also includes a fair bit of rare broadcast material too, really tracing a great evolution of Marmarosa's style over a few short years! The package is overflowing with material – far more than for us to mention in just a few short notes – but we can tell you that it includes Atomic Records 78rpm releases under the name of the Dodo Marmarosa Quartet with Lucky Thompson on tenor, the Dodo Marmarosa Trio, Lyle Griffin & His Orchestra, and the Barney Kessel All Stars – plus Down Beat label 78s by the Lucky Thompson Quartet with Marmarosa on piano, Irra Records material by singer Miss Danna, and Encore Records work by Ray Linn & His Orchestra. There's also MacGregor transcription tracks by the Dodo Marmarosa Trio, Jubilee Transcriptions by the Just Jazz All Stars with Howard McGhee on trumpet, and radio broadcast material by Boyd Raeburn All-Stars, Viven Garry Trio, and Lucky Thompson Quartet – all featuring Marmarosa. The set mostly features mid-40s work – but ends with two long tracks recorded at the Lighthouse in 1952 – with Dodo in a group that also includes Shorty Rogers on trumpet, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenors, and Milt Bernhart on trombone. A really fantastic little set – one that seems to echo the South African jazz legacy of the 60s, but which also puts its own spin on things too – taking things outside at some points, while also hanging onto these modal rhythmic moments at others! The group is really wonderful – bold in spirit, and unified in sound – but with plenty of room for its individual members to stretch out and soar in their solos – in a lineup that includes Elin Forkelid on tenor, Anna Hogberg on alto, Nilas Barno on trumpet, and Sebastian Bergstrom on piano – working through numbers by Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, and Mongezi Feza – a great place to start if you're going for a legacy like this! A dozen heavy groovers from the legendary Discos Fuentes – pulled from a time when the Colombian label was really finding its sound and strengths – mixing together older strands of Afro Cuban inspiration with a special vibe that would soon make their scene rival the Latin music power of New York and Puerto Rico! The percussion is pretty darn heavy on most of these tracks – almost a fusion of the rootsier modes of early years with some of the more sophisticated musical elements developed in the small combo years of the New York 60s Latin scene – but also touched with some styles that are completely Colombian, yet still in a formative early moment that's never predictable or commercial at all. We're not entirely sure what a "stash box" means in terms of music – but after hearing this very groovy collection, we may well be using it as a term ourselves! The set features rare material recorded for the tiny Garland Records label in Salem, Oregon during the late 60s – but the sound and style is different than other Pacific Northwest material of that decade – often a bit sweeter and sunnier, with elements that resonate more strongly with changes taking place on the LA scene of the mid 60s – including some great harmony vocals on a few numbers, and a way of mixing slight psych touches with romping rhythms – all to to create sounds that are almost a garage equivalent of Sunshine Pop from bigger studios. Most of these tracks were never issued at the time, and even the few that were are pretty darn obscure – making the whole thing a treasure trove of really fresh music – with titles that include "Life Laced Leaf" by Inner Circle, "Maybe Today" by Tim Culbertson, "What Goes Up Must Come Down" by Fatty Twice Together, "Grey Day" by The Wild Side, "Parousia" by Lawe, "We'll Meet Again" by Tyme, "Part Time Love" by Will Logan, "Keep On Looing" by The Ultimate, and "Tears" by The New Dawn. Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Some of the most righteous music ever recorded at Studio One – tracks that rival the most progressive American soul music of the 70s in terms of political message and cultural empowerment! Studio One always worked at levels that drew strongly from American soul – but here, the sounds really stand strongly on their own – with a newly-cast vision of price and power in independent Jamaica – set to new rhythms that signify the important musical changes that were taking place with the cultural changes of the 70s! Most of the tracks here are from the first half of the 70s, and are something of the birth of the roots reggae years – but also maybe have even more power together, in this beautifully-selected collection from Soul Jazz. The package features some especially great notes on the politics of the Jamaican scene at the time, which really illuminates the music – a heady selection of tunes that include "Roots Natty" by The Gladiators, "Black Man's Pride" by Alton Ellis, "Created By The Father" by Dennis Brown, "Child Of The Ghetto" by Horace Andy, "Love & Understanding" by Glen Miller, "Got To Be Cool" by The Classics, "Equal Rights" by The Heptones, "Build Our Dreams" by John Holt, "Forgive Them" by Johnny Osbourne, "Children Listen To Wise Words" by Freddie McGregor, "Up Park No Man's Land" by Winston Jarrett, and "Why Can't I" by Cedric Im Brooks. Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A set that offers up a slightly different look at the Studio One label – and at the lovers rock style of reggae that broke big at the end of the 70s! Studio One is often known for its rough-edged early classics – but right from the start, the label had a great ear for soul – which proved a perfect fit for the sorts of mellow steppers that made lovers rock so great! And before you think that "lovers" means "soft" or "commercial" – think again, as these cuts are prime reggae at its best – and often represent a later current that kept the rocksteady vibe going strong, especially with the expressive strengths of the right sort of lead singers of groups serving up the tune. The work here is more down to earth than the headier themes of the roots reggae generation – often very personal in approach – on titles that include "Tumbling Tears (12" disco mix)" by Alton Ellis, "I'll Be Gone" by Horace Andy, "Oh Me Oh My" by Jerry Jones, "Yours Until Tomorrow" by Carlton & The Shoes, "I Hold The Handle" by The Heptones, "Wanna Be Free" by Horace Andy, "Rock All Night" by Billy Cole, "Ghetto Girl" by Sugar Minott, "Soulful Music" by The Invaders, "My Ting A Ling (12" disco mix)" by The Heptones, "I Was Born To Be Loved" by The Righteous Flames, "Truly" by Marcia Griffiths, and "I Don't Know" by Freddie McGregor. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99 36.99
An album that definitely earns its title – as it marks the renewed strength of the Studio One label in the late 70s – an era when much of the reggae mainstream had moved to the major labels, but the tiny Jamaican indie was well-poised to stand supreme in the new wave of dancehall sides at the time! This set captures the roots of dancehall perfectly – especially the way the style took older rhythms from early reggae and rocksteady, and revamped them with some slightly more contemporary production and digital elements – allowing for the soulful flow that was perfect for the new mix of toasted and sung vocals! The set's got some older Studio One artists really getting back their groove, joined by some newcomers who had an even stronger ear to the scene at the time – and as with previous Studio One sets on Soul Jazz, the overall production and presentation is stupendous. Titles include "Bushmaster" by Brentford Rockers, "A Fool" by Alton Ellis, "Chanting" by Jim Nastic, "Jah A Love You" by Sugar Minott, "Keep That Light" by Johnny Osbourne & The Prophets, "Natty Ten To One" by Dillinger, "Minstral" by Prince Jazzbo, "Still Dubbing" by Dub Specialist, "Rastaman Camp" by Freddie McGregor, "Easy" by Willie Williams, "In Cold Blood" by Jackie Mittoo & Brentford All Stars, "Wine Of Violence" by Freddie McGregor, "Show & Tell" by Horace Andy, "Happy Man" by The Gladiators & Brentford Disco Set, and "Quartet Pound Of Ishen" by Lone Ranger. Verve, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

Evan Parker sounds wonderful here – on a 90s session recorded in Chicago, but a record that may well stand with our favorites from his earliest years on vinyl! Parker was sometimes sounding more academic and dry at this point in his career, but he really wakes up our ears here too – maybe in part because the album's his first-ever solo effort on tenor, in contrast to a number of other records over the years in a Lacy-like fashion, recorded with solo soprano sax! Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! A fantastic selection of tracks from a time when reggae and punk were really crossing over on the UK scene – the earliest years of the punk rock movement, when bands like The Clash, Slits, and others were bringing the sounds of Jamaica into much greater mainstream circulation! The cuts here aren't reggae punk – or punked-up reggae – but are instead the core tracks that influenced the late 70s UK generation – mostly roots reggae numbers from a few years before, whose politics and production really struck a chord with disenchanted youth in England! Rub-A-Dub is heavily steeped in choice dancehall – lots of slow-burning, easy-rocking tunes – with newer Studio One artists of the time such as Lone Ranger, Willie Williams, Horace Andy and more – while still making room for the longstanding legends like Alton Ellis and more! Titles include "My Conversation" by Cornell Campbell, "Screw Gone A North Coast" by Lone Ranger, "Danger In Your Eyes" by Juda Eskender Tafari, "How Could You Leave" by Freddie McGregor, "Give Love" by Barry Brown, "White Belly Rat" by Len Allen Jr, "Natural Mystic" by Jennifer Lara, "Happiness" by Horace Andy, "Pirate" by Rapper Robert & Jim Brown, "Keep On Moving" by Willie Williams, "Empty Belly" by Ethiopian, "No Mash Up The Dance" by Earl 16, "Natty Chalwa" by Lone Ranger and more! ✨✧ Blue NotesBefore The Wind Changes ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lost treasure – never-issued material from the legendary Blue Notes combo – and a set that really helps fill some space in their all-too-small recorded catalog! The set captures the group at the end of the 70s, working in their most openly-creative mode – a style that partly shows their strong roots in the South African jazz scene of the 60s, but which also really opens up with some of the freer modes of the following decade – hitting a mix of modes that's not unlike some of the AACM at their best, although often with a lot more intensity, too! The group at this point is a quartet – with Chris McGregor on piano, Johnny Dyani on bass, Louis Moholo on drums, and Dudu Pukwana on some especially amazing alto sax – blown with such righteous force, we might well say that his instrument is center stage on the record – were it not for the wonderfully complex rhythms from the other three group members too! Tracks are long, and filled with righteous soul – and titles inlcude "Ithi Gui", "Mange", "Lonta Uyagula", "Lakutshonga Ilanga", "The Bride", and "Funk Dem Dudu". CD

✨✧ Nick DrakeBryter Layter ... LP
Island (UK), 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Drake's work is impossible to describe adequately, but if you've ever heard him, you probably stopped dead in your tracks the minute you first caught his voice. We still do the same – and it's a pleasure to have this one in stock! Titles include "Fly", "At The Chime Of A City Clock", "Hazy Jane", "Poor Boy", and "One Of These Things First". ✨✧ VariousBrunswick Bubblers – Presented By Gilles Peterson ... CD
Brunswick/Octave (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The legendary Gilles Peterson turns his magical ears to the catalog of Brunswick Records – and comes up with some of the label's hippest tunes of the 60s and 70s! Brunswick is best known for its famous soul hits of the late 60s and early 70s, but Peterson goes much deeper to come up with overlooked gems that are then laid out in a way that really makes them resonate strongly together – at a level that really illustrates the unified groove of the label! Brunswick often worked with a tight array of producers, arrangers, and session players – and Peterson finds key links between these tunes, often in surprising places – which makes the collection a real delight once you start stepping through it. Titles include "Keep On Dancing" by Bohannon, "Inner City Blues" by The Chi-Lites, "Harlem" by Willie Henderson, "This Is The Lost Generation" by The Lost Generation, "Ain't No Sunshine" by Gregory James Edition, "Light My Fire" by Jackie Wilson, "Disco Boogie" by Total Eclipse, "Will I Find Love" by Gene Chandler, "This Love Is Real" by Dana Valery, and "Go With Love" by Barbara Acklin. Motown, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not the usual Motown Christmas set you might imagine – as the record features new material, not old Holiday soul classics – and many of the numbers are special duets recorded just for this project! The set list is impressive – way better than we were expecting – and although the cover art is a bit underwhelming, our hats are off to Motown for re-igniting the label's commitment to quality Christmas tunes! Titles include "Go Tell It On The Mountain/Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Gregory Porter & Anita Wilson, "The Christmas Song" by Ne Yo & Tasha Cobbs, "It's Christmas Time" by Smokey Robinson & Kevin Ross, "This Christmas" by Brian Courtney Wilson & Gene Moore, "Angels We Have Heard On Hihg" by Kierra Sheard & Chrisette Michele, "Mary Did You Know" by India Arie & Gene Moore, "O Holy Night" by Smokie Norful, "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Tasha Cobbs, and "Bethlehem" by Kem & Janice Gaines. ✨✧ VariousStudio One Lovers Rock ... LP
Soul Jazz/Studio One (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of rare Trojan Records compilations, and a host of bonus tracks too – all making for a whopping 57 tracks in all! First up is You Can't Wine – a set that features titles that were released earlier on a variety of different labels, but which all came from the hands of producer Rupie Edwards – a strong mix of vocal tracks and instrumentals, all crackling with a cool late 60s Kingston vibe! Trojan Records pulled the work together after the initial release of the songs, making it one of the strongest statements of Edwards' skills – and titles include "Each Day" by Gregory Isaacs, "You Can't Wine" by The Kingstonians, "The Way I Feel" by Bob Andy, "I Can't Help Myself" by Lloyd Charmers, "Grandfather's Clock" by Winston Wright, "The Masquerade Is Over" by Dobby Dobson, and "I Need Your Loving" by The Concords. Music Alone Shall Live follows up with another Trojan collection of earlier singles issued on a variety of labels – great Rupie Edwards productions, on titles that include "Herbert Spliffington" by Winston Blake, "Too Late" by Gregory Isaacs, "Music Alone Shall Live" by The Mediators, "Since The Other Day" by Joe White, "Every Time" by The Itals, "Full Moon" by Rupie Edwards All Stars, and "Buttoo" by The Concords. Oregon open the door for a few friends to appear on the album – and in doing so, they also open themselves up as well – in a shifting set of tracks that sometimes features different groupings of the core musicians! The guests here are Bennie Wallace on tenor, Larry Karush on piano, and David Earl Johnson on congas and timbales – and the tracks move from longer to shorter, quintet to duo performances – all showing different aspects of the guitars of Ralph Towner, reeds of Paul McCandless, bass of Glen Moore, and sitar and percussion of Collin Walcott. Karush and Moore duet on piano on the beautiful "Love Over Time", Wallace and Walcott mix sitar and tenor on "First Thing In The Morning" – and other titles include "Time Remembered", "Interstate", "Timeless", "Love Over Time", and "Grazing Dreams". The title's a reference to the special presence of Polish violinist Zbigniew Siefert, who joins Oregon for the set – and it's also the name of the side-long track on the first half of the record – a surprisingly beautiful long improvisation by the entire group! Given the way that Oregon can take other instruments and provide them in a very different setting, they also do the same thing here with Siefert – who has elements that are sometimes different than his own records, especially the more fusion-based ones – flowering wonderfully in the acoustic setting provided by Paul McCandless on oboe and bass clarinet, Glen Moore on bass, Ralph Towner on guitars and piano, and Collin Walcott on tablas and percussion. In addition to the long track "Violin", other titles include "Raven's Mood", "Serenade", "Flagolet", and "Friend Of The Family". CD

A wonderful latter day recording from this seminal South African expatriate jazz combo. Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Louis Moholo, and Johnny Dyani make up the quartet that retains the name of The Blue Notes for this live session recorded in London in 1977. Each side of the album is comprised of a suite of numbers, built upon original themes by the group members and riffs off of traditional African folk songs, showcasing the Blue Notes' empathetic group improvisation over angular rhythms that melt into ostinato rhythmic figures with heavy, emotionally charged free solos over top. Titles include "Ilizwi", "Abelusi", "Amadoda", "Nomsenge", "Ithi-Gqi", "Mhegebe", "Maje" and "We Nduna". LP, Vinyl record album

Florian FrickeDie Erde Und Ich Sind Eins (I Am One With The Earth) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A totally weird solo project from Florian Fricke of Popol Vuh – and a set that's very much in keeping with the spirit of the title! There's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole thing – as the record features Fricke and a group of other singers doing these long, slow-building chants – clearly inspired by both Gregorian and Tibetan spiritual modes, but with a much more abstract approach overall – so that the voices come together more as sounds than anything else – which creates this very unusual quality that almost makes the album feel more like low-end electronics than anything created by the human voice! The result is surprisingly beautiful – and every bit as moving as the best later Popol Vuh material – with long tracks that include "Song Of The Earth", "Gruppenseufzen", "Mit Dem Menschen", and "Die Erde Und Ich Sind Eins". A lost legacy in the always-hip Pacific Northwest scene of the 60s – rare psych and garage tracks from the tiny Garland Records – an Oregon imprint who only issued a small amount of singles, but also recorded some really excellent music back in the day!
