✨✧ El Michels AffairSounding Out The City ... LP
Truth & Soul/Big Crown, 2005. New Copy ... $18.99 20.98
Easily one of the greatest new funk records of the 21st Century – and a set that goes way beyond some of the cliches that are currently gripping others in the deep funk underground! El Michels Affair have a cool, easygoing style to their music – one that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk – and which makes for tunes that have a looser structure overall, which allows much more room for instrumental interplay, and the kind of sweet surprises that make the album so great! These guys have a real penchant for an unusual rhythm and interesting instrumental flair – and they borrow as much from 70s soundtracks and Latin albums as they do from the funky 45 era that clearly gave them their start. Totally fresh all the way through, and a record that delights us a lot more than we might have expected! Titles include "Detroit Twice", "El Pueblo Unido", "Behind The Blue Curtains", "Ocho Rios", "Hung Up On My Baby", "This Song's For You", and "Slide Show". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Michels AffairShadowboxin/Iron Maiden ... 7-inch
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
El Michels and Wu-Tang – always a wonderful combination, as you'll hear on this fantastic funky 45! The group take on "Shadowboxin" and strip it right down to its roots – just bassline, slow-stepping drums, and a wicked bit of organ – completely different without any vocals, but maybe showing a further side of the Genius/GZA genius! The Ghostface track "Iron Maiden" is remade on the flip – just badass downturning groove, tight horn blasts, and some very cool organ that comes across with a nicely spooky vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ El Michels AffairTearz/Verbal Intercourse ... 7-inch
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The label says El Michels, but the record also features vocals from Lee Fields & The Shacks – singing in this slow-stepping harmony chorus that often gives way more strongly to the instrumentation – in a moody, late nite funk approach that's one of the finest moments in the El Michels legacy! "Verbal Intercourse" is a bit dubbier, and maybe marks a new path for the group – although the tune's still got loads of badass 70s slow funk elements in the mix – including a weird cat-sounding guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Carlton Jumel Smith1634 Lexington Avenue ... CD
Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The long-overdue debut of Carlton Jumel Smith – a soul singer with roots at the Harlem address listed in the title, and who's slowly been working his way around the globe in recent years! Those global travels are key to the success of this set – as Smith works very tightly in Finland's Timmion studios with Cold Diamond & Mink – who bring to his music what the Dap-Tones or El Michels have brought to other singers in the deep funk spectrum! Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. Titles include "Love Our Love Affair", "I'd Better", "You Gonna Need Me", "Help Me", "Woman You Made Me", "We're All We Got", and "I Can't Love You Anymore". CD

✨✧ VariousFallin Off The Reel Vol 2 – Truth & Soul Singles Collection ... LP
Truth & Soul, Early 70s/Early 2000s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Heavy funk from two different decades – some real lost treasures from the 70s, stacked up here with some equally great work from recent years! The package is a massive second helping from the Truth & Soul family of labels – one that not only shows their continuing dedication to the best in deep funk, but also a recent turn towards older soul from the 70s – served up on a host of recent reissues that are really great! Most work here was only issued on 45s by the label – making the overstuffed collection a bargain at this price, especially given that some of the 45s aren't that easy to find of late. 2LP set is very different than the CD – with some songs that aren't on that format, and vice versa. It features 27 tracks that include the previously unreleased cuts "Odyssey Revised" by The Fabulous Three, "Untitled" by Funky Music Machine, "Sweet As Can Be" by The Evil Ds, and "Bumpy's Lament" by El Michels Affair – plus "Love Comes & Goes" and "My World" by Lee Fields, "Behind Blue Curtains" and "CREAM" by El Michels Affair, "An Earthquake's Coming" and "Is It Me You Really Love" by Black Velvet, "Just A Little While Longer" and "Gotta Clean Up The World (part 1)" by Funky Music Machine, "Nora Se Va" and "La Valla" by Bronx River Parkway, "I'm So Glad You're Mine" by Timothy McNealty, "These Moments" and "Money Is King" by The Expressions, "Call It Static" by Quincy Bright, "Feeling Good" by Bama & The Family, "So Glad" by The Evil Ds, and "Agua Con Sol" by Bronx River Parkway. ✨✧ Bronx River ParkwaySan Sebastian 152 ... LP
Truth & Soul, 2008. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length set from Bronx River Parkway – a wonderful blend of Latin and funk styles that follows beautifully from their strong run of funky 45s! The groove here is sort of a deeper, dirtier take on the Fania sound of the 70s – almost a re-imagining of the late 60s Latin Soul vibe, pretending that it still held on strongly through the following decade – and picked up all sort of weird little twists, turns, and unusual instrumental elements! The group's ties to the El Michels Affair show strongly at points – no surprise, as Leon Michels is in both groups, and produced this set – but the sound is nicely different too, with a bit more of an east coast Latin vibe. Wonderful stuff overall – and proof that the right corners of the deep funk underground still know how to keep things fresh! Titles include "Song For Ray", "Agua Con Sal", "La Valla", "El Resbalon", "San Sebastian 152", "Me Toca", "Mi Corazon", "Para Los Rumberos", "Donde", and "Nora Se Ve". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Menahan Street BandMake The Road By Walking ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance". LP, Vinyl record album
