✨✧ El ChicanoEl Chicano ... LP
MCA, 1973. Very Good ... $5.99
Perfect proof that the New York Latin Soul sound of the 60s had moved to LA during the 70s! El Chicano are a wonderful blend of styles – from sweet harmony soul, to breezy West Coast Latin, to 70s electric funk, and a whole lot more. This early album's a wonderful slice of east side soul – and it's overflowing with great tracks, like the sweet soulful "Tell Her She's Lovely", the funky remake of "What's Going On", the jamming "Together", and the fusion-heavy "Enchanted Forest". El ChicleLa La La/Streaking A Go Go ... 7-inch
Shakat, 1974. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Very cool single by this obscure Euro groove group. "La La La" has a loping sexy bassline, in kind of a Frenchy sort of way – and it's slowly funky, with a chorus that goes (what else?) "la la la". The flipside's a bit more trashy, but the single's a nice one, and possibly the group's only US release! 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of the best tracks by El Coco – the groovy Latin-tinged side project of the landmark Rinder & Lewis disco team! "Dancing In Paradise" has a nice club groove, and this 12" single mix is 8 minutes long! 12-inch, Vinyl record

El Gran ComboTu Querias Boogaloo? – Toma Boogaloo!/You Wanted Boogaloo? – Take Boogaloo! ... LP
Gema, Late 60s. Very Good ... $24.99
El Gran Combo are well known for their work in many styles – but it's their boogaloo work that really sends us, and this album's full of boogaloo tracks! The group's at their best in the format – tight, hard, and lean – and although their take on boogaloo is a bit different than that of the New York scene, the genre still brings out the best in their work. Titles include "Baila Mi Shing A Ling", "Sway To & Fro", "Chiquita", "Boogaloo Con Bajo", "Sabor A Guaguanco", "Shing A Ling For My Baby", and "Tu Quieras Boogaloo? Toma Boogaloo!". El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". LP, Vinyl record album

Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
El Michels and Wu-Tang – always a wonderful combination, as you'll hear on this fantastic funky 45! The group take on "Shadowboxin" and strip it right down to its roots – just bassline, slow-stepping drums, and a wicked bit of organ – completely different without any vocals, but maybe showing a further side of the Genius/GZA genius! The Ghostface track "Iron Maiden" is remade on the flip – just badass downturning groove, tight horn blasts, and some very cool organ that comes across with a nicely spooky vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

El Michels AffairSounding Out The City ... LP
Truth & Soul/Big Crown, 2005. New Copy ... $18.99 20.98
Easily one of the greatest new funk records of the 21st Century – and a set that goes way beyond some of the cliches that are currently gripping others in the deep funk underground! El Michels Affair have a cool, easygoing style to their music – one that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk – and which makes for tunes that have a looser structure overall, which allows much more room for instrumental interplay, and the kind of sweet surprises that make the album so great! These guys have a real penchant for an unusual rhythm and interesting instrumental flair – and they borrow as much from 70s soundtracks and Latin albums as they do from the funky 45 era that clearly gave them their start. Totally fresh all the way through, and a record that delights us a lot more than we might have expected! Titles include "Detroit Twice", "El Pueblo Unido", "Behind The Blue Curtains", "Ocho Rios", "Hung Up On My Baby", "This Song's For You", and "Slide Show". LP, Vinyl record album

El Michels AffairTearz/Verbal Intercourse ... 7-inch
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
The label says El Michels, but the record also features vocals from Lee Fields & The Shacks – singing in this slow-stepping harmony chorus that often gives way more strongly to the instrumentation – in a moody, late nite funk approach that's one of the finest moments in the El Michels legacy! "Verbal Intercourse" is a bit dubbier, and maybe marks a new path for the group – although the tune's still got loads of badass 70s slow funk elements in the mix – including a weird cat-sounding guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Pura Vida (France), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
That's a pretty darn striking image on the cover – and the sounds within are pretty darn striking too – a fantastic mix of Cuban roots and contemporary hip hop production! French producer Al Quetz works here with El Tipo Este of Cuban hip hop group Obsesion – and the style is far more than just the sum of its parts – as the pair resonate together with bits of funk, dub, and other sonic subcurrents – all of which give the record a sense of urgency that we really didn't expect! Lyrics are all in Spanish, and Guts handled some of the arrangements – amidst instrumentation that also includes great touches on trombone, flute, and keyboards. Miguel Y El ComitePara Hacer Musica – Para Hacer ... CD
Lion, 1971. New Copy ... $5.99
Hard grooving, heavily grooving South American rock from Miguel Y El Comite (Miguel & The Committee) from the early 70s – led by Miguel Livichich, who made waves a bit earlier with El Syndikato! The percussion drives the sound pretty well, but the vocals are nicely out front in the mix, where they should be, as their charismatic and inviting as can be – with a nice fuzzed out guitar sound and a killer bass sound. Includes " Para Hacer Musica, Para Hacer...", "No Va Mas (Ya)", "Mi Sol", "Que Me Importa", "Junto Al Mar", "No Ves Que No Cabe", "Candombe Triste", "Hiroshima (1945)", Rompan Todo" and more. Pete El Conde RodriguezFiesta Con El Conde ... CD
Fania, 1982. Used ... $19.99
Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez was always one of the richest voices to sing on the New York Latin scene in the 70s – a talent with this way of going deep, and really stretching out his notes – but at a level that was quite different than so many other singers of his generation! Pete's approach is never overdone, nor filled with flowery touches – but has this magnificent flow that gives his music this really lasting appeal – even on an early 80s album like this, which other folks might overlook. There's a really classic vibe throughout, thanks to arrangements from Jose Febles – and titles include "Fiesta En El Barrio", "Tu Rumba", "Pastorcillo", "Tristeza", "Punto Bare", and "Quincalla". CD

Archie Shepp & Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual TrioConversations – A Tribute To Fred Hopkins ... LP
Delmark/Black Sweat (Italy), 1999. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
A wonderful pairing of talents – the mighty Archie Shepp returned to a strongly spiritual setting on this great late-century album with the Ritual Trio of percussionist Kahil El'Zabar! The group here features Kahil's best lineup – fantastic bass from the late Malachi Favors, and a mix of piano and a bit of tenor sax from Ari Brown – even though Shepp's the main tenor man on the date, and sounding incredible throughout – almost with a Pharoah Sanders sort of rasp and spiritualism at times! Archie definitely owes a lot to Kahil for giving him such a great format – but then again, Kahil always seems to sound best when working with a strong horn in the lead – as on his records with David Murray. Titles include "Brother Malcolm", "Revelations", "Conversations", "Big Fred", "The Dialogue", "Kari", and "Whenever I Think Of You". LP, Vinyl record album

Diskotur/World Psychedelia, 1972. New Copy ... $4.99
The first album by trippy Turkish trio 3 Hur El – a great blend of Eastern sounds and western styles – all coming together with a slightly progressive feel! The instrumentation often includes some heavy basslines underneath lighter lines on acoustic strings – a blend of folksy and modern that's topped by passionate vocals and often underscored by some great heavy percussion – all in a style that's a bit otherworldly, but oddly quite compelling! The set's definitely the kind that makes you say "I don't know what's going on here – but I sure like it anyway" – and titles include "Haram", "Ve Olum", "Ask Davasi", "Diday Dom", "Kara Yazi", "Olum Al Beni", "Pembelikler", and "Anadolu Dansi". 3 Hur-ElHurel Arsivi ... CD
Diskotur/World Psychedelia, Early 70s. New Copy ... $4.99
Trippy rock from the three Hurel brothers of Turkey – a fuzzed-up, freaked-out trio that comes off with some great psychedelic touches! The sound here is a great blending of modes – similar to some of the other Turkish rock from the time that merged electric guitar with folkloric inspirations – but the overall Hurel groove is much more strongly progressive, and sometimes slightly funky at times – due to a tight set of rhythms at the bottom. There's a heaviness here that almost hits Cream-like intensity for the power trio – save for the fact that the lyrics instantly mark the work as being of non-Anglo origins, as do the eastern shadings in the use of guitar and some of the percussion. Titles include "Kol Basti", "Hoptirinom", "Yara", "Doner Dunya", "Agit", "Aglaras Anam Aglar", "Kucuk Yaramaz", and "Canim Kurban". CD

✨✧ El ChicanoCinco ... LP
MCA, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The group's fifth album – in case you couldn't guess by the title – and a still-strong batch of west coast Latin grooves! By this point, the group's become much more proficient vocally – and more of the songs are soul oriented than some of their earlier work, which tended to lean a bit more towards the jazz end of things. Playing's still quite funky, though – and the whole thing's got a nice bubbling over barrio kind of groove. Titles include "El Cayuco", "Children", "What You Don't Know Won't Hurt You", "Ahora Si", "Gringo En Mexico", and a great cover of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". LP, Vinyl record album

Disco Hit, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's the end of the 60s, and El Gran Combo are really going strong – working in a tight, focused groove that's definitely on the cutting edge of Latin music at the time – even though these guys were already turning into one of the biggest acts on the scene! There a good mix of New York tough and Puerto Rican roots in the music – and their trademark blend of two saxes and two trumpets somehow has a bit more soul than some of the larger acts of the time – even while elements of the music still hold onto tradition nicely. ✨✧ Tita Duval Y El Nuevo Ritmo De Bobby ReyCumbias Internacionales (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A cumbia record with a very unusual groove – served up by Argentine star couple Tita Duval and Roberto Rey, who were both living in Colombia during the 70s – where they clearly felt free to mess with lots of the usual modes of the local style! The record's definitely a cumbia set in its rhythms – but instrumentation and other elements change up nicely throughout – so there might be moogy keyboards on one track, a weird Varitone sax on another, and all these other groovy, funky touches that come into play over the course of the very cool record – a sense of musical freedom that hardly made the record a hit at the time, but which makes it plenty darn great all these many years later. Titles include "Safari Safari", "Zombie Rock", "Batukacuto", "A Mi Modo", "Claudia", "La Cumbia Mujer", "Noche De Cumbia", and "Hombre Pobre". LP, Vinyl record album

A funky killer from this legendary European group – a record that's filled with as much funk and soul as the Latin elements you might have guessed from the title! El Chicles may have been a studio project, but they were a heck of a funky one – with hard drums, tight bass, and mixed-up Latin funky groove that was always pretty right on, no matter what the material happened to be! This cold little jammer from the early 70s features the group riffing hard on funky covers of "Viva Tirado", "Ode To Billy Joe", and "I'm A Man" – and grooving even better on the original tracks "Drug Bay" and the break-heavy "At Nee-Ko". There's some excellent organ in the mix, and the whole thing's packaged in a very cheesy cover! CD

Tight salsa from El Gran Combo – and a record that has a slightly different feel than some of their other 70s efforts, thanks to a bit of added tres! The guitar-like instrument brings a nice sense of tradition to the record – that nod back to the roots of Latin that other 70s groups were doing in the Fania scene – an approach that really works well here for El Gran Combo, as it only seems to deepen their already-great sound. Miguel Cruz handles the tres, and also the bass – and titles include "Los Sorullos", "Desenfunda", "El Tabaco", "Bomba Pa Gozar", "Con La Misma Cosa", "Siempre Alegre", "Que Me Handado", and "El Jolgorio". A great summation of the Gato Barbieri recordings for the Flying Dutchman label – and a set that includes a key new composition too! Some of the record features older Barbieri tracks for Flying Dutchman, but the highlight here is the extended 13-minute suite, "El Gato" – a wonderful number composed by Oliver Nelson, and done with a soaring, spiritual vibe that's a wonderful summation of his genius at the time – that Pharoah Sanders way of blowing in really long, searching solos, but never going too outside. Other tracks are great – and all have a nice Latin current – and feature work from Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Mtume on drums, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Airto on percussion – on titles that include "El Parana", "Merceditas", and "Ninos". A really great album from these two giants of the Ornette Coleman generation – and one that also shows just how much space both musicians had traversed since the 60s! Don Cherry plays his familiar pocket trumpet in the lead, but also brings in piano, melodica, organ, and doussn gouni – creating this beautiful sonic palette next to the very creative work on drums and percussion from Blackwell! Both musicians improvise in rhythm-driven modes that seem to have their roots in Ornette's original quartet with the pair – but there's also open ears to a globe's worth of instrumental elements, and decades of new sound shapes as well. Fantastic throughout – with titles that include "Mutron/Bemsha Swing/Solidarity/Arabian Nightingale", Roland Alphonso", "Street Dancing", "Makondi", and "Near In". CD

A great little album by Terry Gibbs – one that's free from the gimmicks that could sometimes mar his other efforts, and which really lets the vibist get a chance to open up in a session of straight ahead tunes with a surprising degree of soul! The group on the set's a quartet – with Alice McCloud on piano, Herman Wright on bass, and John Dentz on drums – and all the tunes on the set are originals by Gibbs, with a level of imagination and melodic creation that we never would have expected from him! The whole thing's pretty darn great, and filled with interesting tracks that include "The Young Ones", "El Flippo", "The Nightie Night Waltz", "Little S", "Hey Pretty", and "Little C". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove, in the extravagant gatefold cover with booklet.)

Chico HamiltonEl Exigente ... LP
Flying Dutchman, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Great work from a fantastic period of drummer Chico Hamilton – a time when he'd moved way past the chamber jazz of his 50s years, and even some of his more freewheeling 60s modes on Impulse Records! Here, Chico seems really obsessed with rhythm – to a level where he's not afraid to complicate things, even in search of a groove – working with odd timings and changes that are still pretty groundbreaking, even all these many years later! As with previous records, Hamilton shows a great ear for picking unusual and inventive players – as the set includes Arnie Lawrence doing some incredible work on electric alto sax, and Bob Mann adding in trippy guitar fills that give the tracks a wild stoner feel. Chico's drums are freer than ever – and the album's a real lost gem in the Flying Dutchman mode – with titles that include "Volvos", "Up Front What Counts", "Swingin On A Sitar", "How 'Bout Bobby", "As I Open My Eyes", and "Gonna Get Some Right Now". Juaneco Y Su ComboEl Gran Cacique ... LP
Infopesa (Peru), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99
A cornerstone of the classic chica groove in Peru – and one of the albums that put Juaneco and his very groovy combo on the musical map of 70s South America! The tracks are mostly instrumental, and have a fantastically tight blend of percussion, keyboard lines, and electric guitar – the last of which has a style that's directly tied to surf guitar modes of the American west coast of the 60s – but with leaner, snakier, spookier styles that are completely sublime – and which often have a way of stepping around the rhythms that would have made The Ventures weep! Production is great – with just the right dose of echo to make everything sound even more wonderful – and titles include "El Pajarito Pajero", "La Marcha Del Sapo", "Aguita De Sachachorro", "Me Robaron Mi Runa Mula", "Vacilando Con Ayahuasca", "Volando", and "La Incognita". Dead Oceans, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
A funky combo, but one with a real difference – as they seem to find whole new corners of the globe in which to work their magic – almost an imagined space of cultural criss-crossing, all set to some mighty funky bass and drums! The core element here is the guitar – which echoes exotic modes that seem to move from Mexican folk, to contemporary Tuareg sounds, and even a bit of southwest guitar instrumental echo – but all in ways that are very fresh and different, and which also sound quite unusual compared to the usual use of guitar in a funky combo! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but really the guitar is the main "voice" – and one that speaks volumes – on titles that include "Lady & Man", "Como Te Quiero", "Shades Of Man", "Maria Tambien", "Como Me Quieres", "A Hymn", and "Rules". Drums and bass really get a great workout – and the production isn't the usual Jamaican-inspired dub, but a mode that's maybe partly got a David Axelrod quality – as these guys use the instrumental moments to open up into all these dark, moody corners – while still keeping things nicely funky overall. Titles include "With All The World", "Sisters & Brothers", "How I Love", "Four Of Five", "Hasta El Cielo", and "Order Of Operations". A mid 70s cracker from Pacheco – salsa with a mix of traditional influences, in a mode that follows shifts of other Latin acts at the time, yet still keeps things in the lean grooves you'd expect from Pacheco! The album is is first in many without Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez on vocals – but that aspect's more than taken care of by lead singer Hector Casanova, who follows Pacheco well into this slightly shift in a new direction. Many tracks on the set are upbeat and lively, and titles include "Mango Mangue", "Prestame Los Guantes", "Las Muchachas", "El Chivo", "Simani", and "El Faisan". LP, Vinyl record album

The package features tracks recorded in both Cuba and New York – divided up into 3 CDs: Blen Blen Blen, Timbero La Timba Es Mia, and The Cu-Bop Days – and recordings span the range of styles that Pozo was involved in during the 1940s. Features most of his classic "cubop" recordings with Dizzy Gillespie and others – plus a wealth of earlier, hard-to-find sides. Plus, the set features a 148 page book on Chano – plus snippets of anecdotes and some unreleased recordings! CD

Hector Lavoe's vocals are wrapped tightly and beautifully here in Willie Colon production – and the album's one of the classics from the pair recorded at the height of Lavoe's solo career! The sound is tight and dynamic, but never too over the top – and although Lavoe's vocals are certainly center stage on the record, there's also some tremendous flourishes from the backing players that really drive the set. And as a surprisingly highlight, the album actually features one instrumental track – very odd for a Hector Lavoe album – a mellow reading of Lee Morgan's "Ceora", done with a fair bit of strings on this version. Arrangements are by Jose Febles and Jose Madero – and titles include "El Sabio", "Alejate", "Llore", "Ceora", and "Para Ochun". CD

One of the real standouts in the career of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – a record of incredible tightness, and one that set a whole new level for Puerto Rican salsa in the 70s! There's still a few traces here of the Latin Soul years – sometimes in the rhythms, at other times in the record's use of an additional female vocalist – who sings behind Bobby's vocals in a really cool way on some of the best numbers. But the main focus here is really on the tightness of the instrumentation – razor-sharp in the arrangements, and served up in a lean mix of piano, trumpets, and percussion. Sure, the title track does reference the Popeye cartoons a bit, but overall the record's got a soulfulness and sensitivity that stands out even among Adalberto Santiago's contemporaries at Fania – a range of material and flexibility that comes off wonderfully, thanks to a top-shelf batch of arrangers and the sense of feeling that Santiago brings to the lyrics.
