✨✧ El Chicano20th Century Masters Millennium Collection – Best Of El Chicano ... CD
Kapp/Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
Stone Latin Soul – from one of the greatest groups of the genre! In the late 60s, New York was on top of the Latin Soul sound – blending together bits from Puerto Rican and African-American roots to come up with a whole new sound. But by the time of the early 70s, LA had taken over the groove – and nobody did it better than El Chicano! The combo had a really wonderful sound that was Chicano soul at its best – lots of jazzy stepping rhythms topped off with fuzzy guitars, sweet keyboard bits, and some warm and wonderful west coast soul-styled vocals. There were plenty of Latin influences in the rhythms, but the sound itself was pure LA – done with a really righteous groove throughout! This set brings together a dozen of the group's best tracks for the Kapp and MCA labels from the early 70s – and tracks include "Cubano Chant", "Viva Tirado", "El Cayuco", "The Latin One", "Tell Her She's Lovely", "Sabor A Mi", "Ahora Si", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Juntos". ✨✧ El ChiclesViva Tirado ... CD
Polydor/Pregador Do Som (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A funky killer from this legendary European group – a record that's filled with as much funk and soul as the Latin elements you might have guessed from the title! El Chicles may have been a studio project, but they were a heck of a funky one – with hard drums, tight bass, and mixed-up Latin funky groove that was always pretty right on, no matter what the material happened to be! This cold little jammer from the early 70s features the group riffing hard on funky covers of "Viva Tirado", "Ode To Billy Joe", and "I'm A Man" – and grooving even better on the original tracks "Drug Bay" and the break-heavy "At Nee-Ko". There's some excellent organ in the mix, and the whole thing's packaged in a very cheesy cover! CD

El CocoRevolucion ... LP
AVI, 1980. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Latin inflected club grooves by the legendary El Coco – a fantastic group who often worked with the same sort of spacey elements that you'd find in work from the P&P family of labels! The group were probably the most successful to come from the team of Michal Lewis and Laurin Rinder – and although things are maybe not as jazzy or far out as some of the other Rinder & Lewis records, there's still plenty of those elements in the mix! Most tracks are nice and long, with a disco groove, and titles that include "Carry Me", "I'll Take My Chances", "Something Ya Got Makes Me Hot", and "Love Bizness". LP, Vinyl record album

El Gran FelloveMango Mangue ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
One of the first international collections to showcase the genius of Francisco Fellove Valdes – a singer and percussionist who first rose up on the scene in Havana in the 50s, but who made an undeniably strong contribution to the Mexican scene of the late 50s and early 60s – with the sort of material showcased in this set! Fellove's got a very unusual style of singing – influenced a bit by scatting in jazz, but also given more of the prouder, louder calls that you'd hear on an Afro Cuban jam session – a great balance with the heavy percussion and jazzy instrumentation used on these tracks, almost all of which were recorded for RCA down in Mexico. The track selection is wonderful, and the notes do a great job of introducing the world to this sometimes-overlooked figure in Latin music – presented here with 21 tracks that include "Mango Mangue", "Baile Mi Rumba", "Te Quiero Corazon", "El Yoyo", "San Jose", "Alejate De Mi", ""Mata Siguaraya", "Baile El Minuet", "Baila Mi Guapacha", and "Guapacheando". A short set of work from El Michels Affair – but as with most of their records, a set that delivers a heck of a lot more than you'd get from other groups in their scene! If the cover looks a bit familiar, it's because the cuts here were recorded during the sessions for the Yeti Season album, but didn't get issued at the time – but they've got a weirder, wilder vibe than that record too – almost as if the already-trippy funk of El Michels were run through a special filter to make things sound even more exotic, yet all without ever losing the groove! Titles include "Poison Song", "Progress", "Nasir", "Messy Grass", "Cham Cham", "Uncut Gem", "Smoked", and "Running Hot". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". El Michels AffairSounding Out The City ... LP
Truth & Soul/Big Crown, 2005. New Copy ... $18.99 20.98
Easily one of the greatest new funk records of the 21st Century – and a set that goes way beyond some of the cliches that are currently gripping others in the deep funk underground! El Michels Affair have a cool, easygoing style to their music – one that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk – and which makes for tunes that have a looser structure overall, which allows much more room for instrumental interplay, and the kind of sweet surprises that make the album so great! These guys have a real penchant for an unusual rhythm and interesting instrumental flair – and they borrow as much from 70s soundtracks and Latin albums as they do from the funky 45 era that clearly gave them their start. Totally fresh all the way through, and a record that delights us a lot more than we might have expected! Titles include "Detroit Twice", "El Pueblo Unido", "Behind The Blue Curtains", "Ocho Rios", "Hung Up On My Baby", "This Song's For You", and "Slide Show". LP, Vinyl record album

A new and amazing chapter in the always-evolving sound of this wonderful funk ensemble – a set that holds onto all the unusual elements of previous records, but also brings in some beautiful vocals from singer Piya Malik on a number of tracks! Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". We've always loved the music of Kahil El Zabar – and over the decades, the work of the drummer/percussionist has made us very proud to be part of the Chicago music scene! Yet recently, Kahil seems to be on fire even more than before – driven with a new sense of purpose and message that's had the musician making some of his greatest records in a long time – like this fantastic quartet session, an instant classic that has El Zabar working with some key Chicago associates in a very spiritual style! The album features key work from the great Isaiah Coller on tenor and soprano sax – a young player who's really setting things on fire, and finding a fantastic sense of direction here, alongside Corey Wilkes on trumpet and Justin Dillard on keyboards. As with Kahil, all other musicians bring a bit of percussion to play at times – on titles that include "A Time For Healing", "Urban Shaman", "Eddie Harris", "The Coming Of Spring", "We'll Get Through This", and "Time Is". A really fantastic record from Chicago percussion legend Kahil El'Zabar – and one that features plenty of guest work on tenor from David Murray, a musician who always seems to be a perfect match for the musical ideas of Kahil! And the leader also steps out with a great side of his talents on the record too – as El'Zabar sings on a number of tracks – something he doesn't do often, but which always makes for a really special sound when he does – a vibe that's almost as if you've picked up some righteous record from the early 70s, in a really cool blend of jazz, soul, and message-oriented themes! The rest of the group features Emma Dayhuff on bass and Justin Dillard on piano and organ – and as usual, Kahil plays a huge range of percussion instruments, always inventively – and creating a richly organic setting that also seems to bring out the best in David Murray too. El-P as visceral and inventive as hed been in years – and in hindsight, a strong solo effort pointing the way to the career peak to date that'd come with formation of Run The Jewels pretty soon after! You know damn well well that El-P is going out spit out ominous, though entrancing futuristic boom bap, and he does that as well as he has in years right here. What feels like an improvement over the past couple or 3 releases is in the vocals – sharp, furiously creative storytelling stands out really strongly on this one. It takes a major talent to shoot out such relentless and angry product that's easy to love and nod your head to, but you already know that's El-Producto, right?! The group's fifth album – in case you couldn't guess by the title – and a still-strong batch of west coast Latin grooves! By this point, the group's become much more proficient vocally – and more of the songs are soul oriented than some of their earlier work, which tended to lean a bit more towards the jazz end of things. Playing's still quite funky, though – and the whole thing's got a nice bubbling over barrio kind of groove. Titles include "El Cayuco", "Children", "What You Don't Know Won't Hurt You", "Ahora Si", "Gringo En Mexico", and a great cover of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El ChicanoViva Tirado ... LP
Kapp, 1970. Fair ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff – and the beginning of a strong tradition of west coast funky Latin groups! El Chicano were one of a number of groups to emerge from LA of the 60s – rising forth on a wave of Mexican American pride to come up with a west coast version of the Latin Soul sound that had been emanating from Spanish Harlem a few years earlier. The group had an organ-heavy sound that first scored big on their rendition of Gerald Wilson's "Viva Tirado" – done as a single by the group with a stepping jazz beat that was missing from the earlier version, which worked great with their bubbly organ sound. The album was recorded to follow up the hit – done as a live set after hours at the Kabuki Sukiyaki Restaurant in south LA, and filled with tight jazzy covers 60s groovers like "Cantaloupe Island", "Eleanor Rigby", "Hurt So Bad", and "Coming Home Baby". The record's also got an amazing version of "Quiet Village" – and while it may not be as Latin as some of the group's later work, it's the beginning of a great tradition, and has a sound that was copied endlessly – but rarely matched! LP, Vinyl record album

A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

A bold vision for a better version of our nation – served up here by percussionist Kahil El Zabar, but in a mode that also has him working as the conductor of a larger ensemble too! The record has all the sense of pride, power, and optimism of some of the best sessions of this type from the 80s – that feeling that music can actually effect change, especially in the hands of artists like this – a very strong ensemble that features work from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Josh Ramos on bass, Samuel Williams on violin, and Dennis Winslett on alto sax! The record still has a sense of groove that you'd know from Kahil's smaller group records – imagine a Ritual Trio sense of rhythm with augmented elements – and the set mixes a few well-chosen covers with great originals. ✨✧ Jaime Delgado AparicioEl Embajador Y Yo (plus Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio) ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1964/1966. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing little soundtrack – written in mid 60s Peru by jazz pianist Jaime Delgado Aparicio, but easily on a par with some of the best American or Italian scores from the time! The music's got a really wonderful feel throughout – jazz at the core, but with touches of spy soundtrack scoring and some of the lighter, more comedic modes of the Italian scene. Delgado uses a core combo with heavy piano, percussion, and some great trumpet and tenor – almost with the tightness of the Basso-Valdambrini group – but he also expands the sound with bits of strings and some fuller orchestrations, used to shade in some amazing colors that roll, dip, and turn with the beautiful grooves penned for the set. The whole thing's tremendous, with equally great production that creates some odd twists and turns that further keep things interesting as the album rolls on. Titles include "Elm Embajador Y Yo", "Sexy Surf", "Llegando A La Capital", "Isometria", "Todo El Mundo Me Persigue", "Lucha En El Mar", and "La Arana". Added to the soundtrack is Jamie's 1964 album – Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio – a crackling bit of piano jazz from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – and a record that's somewhere between the best of Horace Silver on Blue Note, and some of the Brazilian bossa trios of the time! There's a strong sense of rhythm throughout – round, rolling basslines punctuated by great work on the drum kit – all topped by beautifully lyrical lines from Delgado Aparicio on piano – filled with color, light, and life throughout – and soloing with a depth that's rare for such a young player! Titles include a great version of Horace Silver's "Sayonara Blues", plus "The Climate", "Autumn Leaves", "Walkin", and "Blue Daniel". CD

Impulse (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $18.99
Our favorite-ever album by Alice Coltrane – a masterpiece of spirit and soul, recorded in a wonderfully open-handed style! The album's mostly a spare batch of tracks cut by Alice and her trio with Ron Carter and Ben Riley – but also features some guest work on sax by Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders on a few tracks. Pharoah and Joe blow with beautiful post-Coltrane spirituality on the tracks "Ptah The El Daoud" and "Mantra" – but equally great is the beautiful spare piano cut "Turiya & Ramakrishna" – an incredible tune that has Alice playing with a soulfulness you'd hardly expect! A real treasure all the way through – and the kind of album that ranks with the best in the Impulse catalog! CD

Hans DulferEl Saxophon (180 gram green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Catfish/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A record that might look a bit hokey on the cover, but which has a tremendous sense of power through and through – especially on side two, where the great Hans Dulfer is joined by some key avant players who were working on the Paris scene in the early 70s! Side one has this very unusual sound – as Dulfer's tenor is mixed with these odd vocalizations which are sometimes processed with a bit of echo – just supported by the bass of Jan Jacobs, and a mix of timbales and congas from Groentjie and Steve Boston – in a lean groove that stretches out on these long tracks with almost a tribal sort of vibe! Side two is even more striking – as Hans Dulfer leans more into the avant inclinations of his 60s material – in a larger group that has Frank Wright on additional tenor, Bobby Few on piano, John Schuursma on guitar, Jerome Hunter on the bass, and the great Muhammad Ali on drums! You'll recognize Ali and Few from some of Wright's best records of the time – and the group also get more percussion from the players who worked on side one. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Sad Love Story", "El Saxophon", "Rice Path", and "Very Sad Love Story". LP, Vinyl record album

Production is by Ralph MacDonald and William Eaton, with a great blend of soul and jazz – and all cuts are instrumental, with help from players who include Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on keyboards, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. Sonar Kollektiv/Oom Dooby Dochas (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
A killer set of tropical disco – a record that's maybe a much better illustration of the mode than some of the bigger US albums of the style – even though the mighty Daniel Grau hardly ever got his due back in the day! That's partly because Daniel was working far from the limelight in New York, Philly, and Miami – down in Venezuela, where he maybe had an even closer link to the kind of jungle trappings he brings to his music – slight touches of exotica which are layered in over bolder clubby rhythms and some mighty nice keyboards – all without any sense of kitsch or cliche at all, and delivered with a lean sound that makes his music especially ripe for rediscovery in the 21st Century! Grau might be moving in territory that's a bit like some of the European disco artists of the time – but his overall approach is a lot warmer and more soulful – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Correcaminos", "El Leon Bailarin", "Con El Cielo En Tus Ojos", "Apartate", and "El Fenix". Apollo Sound/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $26.99
A classic album of Latin grooves from the UK scene – a musical world that wasn't always a hotbed of styles in the Afro-Cuban mode, but which did have the benefit of the mighty percussionist Robin Jones! Jones was born in India, but moved to London during the same post-colonial jazz migration that brought the city key talents from the West Indies – and like Joe Harriott, Shake Keane, and others, Robin's contributions to the scene were crucial during the years he worked in a variety of different groups! This set is Jones' second as a leader – a very hip set that's all jazz all the way through – with plenty of percussion from Robin, and a combo that includes trumpet, saxes, keyboards, and vibes – all used in ways that take off from the best jazz descarga styles into a range of other modes. Titles include "El Maja", "The Wailer", "Batucada Da Vida", "Carica Papaya", "El Lobo", "Chant Afrique", and "Atlas". CD

Rare bossa from the Mexican scene of the 60s – played by a very hip quintet with Breno Sauer on vibes and Claudio Roditi on trumpet and vocals! The group's got a groove that extrapolates Brazilian rhythms nicely – a take on bossa nova that's a bit like some of the American work of the same time, with elements of jazz and pop folded into the tunes nicely – never in a cheesy, commercial way – but in a sunny style that really opens up the sound! The combo's actually led by pianist Joao Peixoto Primo – who also plays organ on the set too – but arrangements are by Sauer, and the groove is a bit like his own great albums of the 60s. Essential grooves from Tito Puente – a really unique record for the time, and a set that's only grown in power over the years! There's only just a bit of bass – played by Robert Rodriguez – to focus the energy of the percussion, and the timbales, congas, and bongos offer up both melodic lines and rhythmic grooves – a groundbreaking sound, recorded brilliantly back in the 50s! The album's got a killer stripped-down feel that you rarely get on other Tito Puente records – and tracks include "Tito on Timbales", "Swinging Mambo", "Congo Beat", "Sticks On Bongo", "Tito & Mongo On Timbales", "Four Beat Mambo", and "The Big Four". The notes of this set have Matthew Shipp raving about the piano talents of Paula Shocran – and we can say that she not only has a sense of complexity and dexterity that maybe matches Shipp's work on the keys, but also works beautifully here with Matthew's frequent musical partner, bassist William Parker! The improvisations here are very loose and open – with each musician really retaining their own identity – not in challenge to the other, but as a way of establishing points of a triangle that are firm, and which allow for plenty of free play in between – qualities that drummer Pablo Diaz really brings to his work here too. All tracks are nice and long, and handled with a real sense of beauty – "Los Jardines", "Ausencia", "Capricornio", and "El Templo". CD

A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – but here, teamed up with Eddie Palmieri, his music gets a great New York infusion – and one that's even a bit more contemporary than some of Tjader's previous 60s Latin efforts. Eddie's sharp-edged piano is totally great – ringing out with some especially bold tones – and other players on the set include Julian Priester and Mark Weinstein on trombones, Ismael Quintana on percussion, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, and George Castro on flute. Arrangements are by Eddie and Claus Ogerman – and titles include "Los Jibaros", "Ritmo Uni", "Picadillo", "Unidos", "El Sonido Nuevo", and "Guajira En Azul". A really mindblowing set of music from late 70s Lebanon – an ambitious blend of jazzy instrumentation, poetic vocals, and larger instrumental impulses – all with this soaring sort of energy that reminds us of some of the more complex Brazilian records of the 70s, or of some of our favorite genre-crossing projects on the Saravah Records label! Most of the tracks feature sweet electric piano lines next to these crispy guitar riffs – flowing with a style that's open and a bit breezy, but given a nice sort of grounding by the vocals of Issam Hajali – an artist who's clearly trying to find a more universal sort of spirit with this album! The whole thing is quite tough to put in words, but has that extra special sort of vibe that's made some of the best of these Habibi Funk reissues so amazing – music we never would have heard otherwise, with titles that include "Lam Azal", "Khobs", "Intazirne", "Yawma Konna", "Ada", and "Ana Damir El Motakallim.". ✨✧ Pat MartinoEl Hombre ... LP
Prestige/OJC, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first album that guitarist Pat Martino ever cut as a leader – and an excellent mix of styles that links his soul jazz roots with his later, trippier recordings! The group here is a sextet, and it features organist Trudy Pitts (who was Martino's boss at the time), plus flute, drums, and percussion – all stretching out with a really unique sort of sound! The tracks have a bit of an Eastern feel to them, especially when Martino stretches out on his solos – but they also have a nice solid groove that keeps them right in the pocket rhythmically. Titles include "Waltz For Geri", "El Hombre", "Cisco", "Blues For Mickey-O", and "One For Rose". Very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Enrico Rava & Aga Taura ConfabEl Convidado ... LP
Svart (Finland), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most obscure albums ever recorded by Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava – and one of the greatest as well! The set is a rare meeting between Rava and some key players on the Argentine scene of the mid 70s – a great quartet that features Fernando Gelbard on Fender Rhodes, Adalberto Cevasco on bass, Nestor Astarita on drums, and Chango Faras Gomez on percussion – all working with Rava in a groove that's maybe warmer and more soulful than both his spacious and more experimental sides recorded in America and overseas! We always love Gelbard on Rhodes – and his work here really adds a lot to the record – never dominating, but always shaping the sound and forming the rhythm patterns – while Rava soars out with some open, well-placed solos. Titles include "Chico", "Ate Um Dia", "Barco Hasta El Cielo", and "Enrico Seis Octavo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jorge Lopez RuizEl Grito ... LP
Acoua/Be With (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A brilliant large group performance from Argentine bassist Jorge Lopez Ruiz – and one that's got all the fire and energy you might expect from the cover! The album's an extended piece in five movements – written, arranged, and directed by Ruiz on bass – but featuring some stunning solo work from Mario Cosentino on alto sax, Gustavo Bergalli on flugelhorn, and Ruben Lopez Furst on piano! The tunes step out slowly, but build fully – with a mixture of complex ideas and rich individuality that reminds us a lot of the Clark Boland Big Band, with with perhaps an even greater sense of space. The album's a gem all the way through – and movements include "Hasta El Cielo", "Mab Amor", "El Grito", "Tendre El Mundo", and "De Nuevo El Grito". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willie RosarioEl Bravo Soy Yo ... LP
Alegre/Survival Research (Australia), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stormer of an album from percussionist Willie Rosario – one of those 60s sets that really have Willie pointing the way towards the 70s salsa generation – working with a small combo that has a beautifully tight groove, all topped with vocals from the young Frankie Figueroa! Frankie's soulful lead has a mode that's often different than singers from a few years before – and Willie's way of balancing a small horn section with piano, bass, and percussion almost has the same spirit as the Joe Cuba Sextet – a similarly dangerous vibe that marks a whole new generation in Latin music. Titles include "Dame Tu Amor Morenita", "Guaguanco Bonito", "El Bravo Soy Yo", "Buscando Guaguanco", "Lagrimas Negras", "Mereces Que Te Quiera", "Dicelo A El", "Te Amo En Silencio", "Dejame Estar Contigo", and "Eres Todo Para Mi". Miles DavisCinema Of Miles Davis ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/1960s. Used ... $8.99
A compelling exploration into the use of the music of Miles Davis in film – one that begins with a famous French soundtrack from the new wave generation, then moves onto vintage Miles tunes that were used in other movies over the years! The core of the record features Davis' score to the 1957 film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud – one of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a stunning soundtrack that began a rich legacy of jazz scores in France! Miles recorded this material during late-night post-gig sessions with a great group that includes French players Barney Wilen, Rene Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot, plus American ex-patriot Kenny Clarke. Wilen's playing is fantastic, and it's great to hear him and Miles together on the score's spooky meandering passages. Alongside that body of work, the CD also features Davis songs that were used in a variety of films from the 70s onward – tracks that weren't written for the films, but which had strong use in movies that include Lenny, Kerouac, Tacones Lejanos, Ginger & Rosa, Talented Mr Ripley, and La Flor De Mi Secreto. These titles include "Saeta", "Blue Haze", "Tempus Fugit", "Well You Needn't", "It Never Entered My Mind", "Nature Boy", "Solea", and "Blue In Green". Also features a selection each by Lenny Bruce and Jack Kerouac! CD

Brian Ellis GroupEscondido Sessions ... CD
El Paraiso, 2015. Used ... $11.99
A contemporary set from the west coast scene – and one that's got a similar feel to the soaring, spiritual sounds we've heard from some of the projects of Carlos Nino – but a quality that's maybe a bit more tripped-out overall! All tracks are long, and very jamming – with loads of cool keys from Brian Ellis – including Fender Rhodes, Hammond, Wurlitzer, and Moog – in a group that's also very heavy on percussion, which creates a wicked organic rumble next to the electric elements! Patrick Shiroishi plays alto and soprano sax – soaring out nicely and giving the tunes a bit of a soulful current – and titles include "Via De Mi Rancho", "Too Late For Georgia's", "On Peterson's Corner", and "Memories Of Pubby". Project 3/El (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
The complete early recordings of The Free Design – one of the most heavenly vocal groups ever recorded! The lineup features two gals and two guys – singing together in ways that take the earlier harmony modes of the 60s into some very special territory – a bit like some of the more creative pop taking place at A&M Records, ala Sergio Mendes or The Sandpipers – but with a more innocent sound that really sets the tracks apart – even when the group are singing other folks' material! But the real charmers here are their original tunes, which come in more and more as the albums move on – innocent themes and playful lyrical lines that were almost ignored at the time, but went on to influence countless of artists and groups over the years. The package features the full albums Kites Are Fun, You Could Be Born Again, Heaven Earth, Stars Time Bubbles Love, Sing For Very Important People, One By One, and There Is A Song – plus lots more rare tracks from singles and archive tapes – including their great Christmas single! ✨✧ Mort GarsonZodiac Cosmic Sounds ... CD
Elektra/El (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
The Zodiac never sounded so spooky – and the album's one of the first in a trend that explored astrology with funky musical backings! The music for the set was put together by moogy maestro Mort Garson – then making a transition from being a straight easy arranger in the early 60s, to more of a tripped-out pop-psychedelic artist of the latter part of the decade. Garson brings a nice funky undercurrent to the set – in a style that's similar to the work of David Axelrod, but which also uses a bit more electric instrumentation. Each track features a spoken bit on a Zodiac sign – written by Jacques Wilson, and spoken by Cyrus Faryar – and the album also features some nice moog work by Paul Beaver! Titles include "Aries", "Taurus", "Cancer", "Leo", and so on! (P.S.: The label says "Must Be Played In The Dark!") CD

Annie RossAnnie Ross Sings A Handful Of Songs (plus Gasser/Cranks/bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/El (UK), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
An overstuffed package of work from Annie Ross – one that features a few key albums, plus some rare bonus tracks too! First up is A Handful Of Songs – which has Ross recording as a solo act back in England after leaving her famous group with Dave Lambert and John Hendricks! The style here is a bit like some of the solo work that Ross cut in the US at the end of the 50s – particularly her sides for Pacific Jazz – not as vocalese and solo-oriented as the sort of recordings that first got her noticed, but still a lot more dynamic than most straighter jazz singers of the time! Arrangements are pretty groovy overall – nicely jazzy, and penned by Johnnie Spence – also produced by John Barry, who really helps keep the right sort of "punch" in the set. Titles include "Fly Me To The Moon", "Nature Boy", "A Lot Of Livin To Do", "Like Someone In Love", "A Handful Of Songs", and "All Of You". Next is A Gasser – one of Annie Ross' rare albums as a solo act away from her trio with Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert – and a great little session cut with small combo jazz backing, which gives the song a nice swinging edge! Zoot Sims is the main soloist on the tunes, Russ Freeman lays down piano tracks to set the mood – and other players include Jim Hall, Monte Budwig, Mel Lewis, and Bill Perkins – all of whom contribute wonderfully to the album, and give it a nicely grooving west coast finish. Titles include "I Was Doing Alright", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Lucky Day", "Lucky So & So", and "Nobody's Baby". 2CD set also features material from the London cast recording of Cranks – which features Ross with Anthony Newley – plus some songs with Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – and the tune "Let's Fly" by Johnny Mercer & The Pied Pipers, which was written by Ross. Edgar VareseComplete Works Of Edgar Varese Vol 1 (Complete Works/Music Of Edgar Varese/Sound Spectacular) (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $19.99 25.99
A trio of albums that represent important early recordings of compositions by groundbreaking sonic genius Edgar Varese! First is the album Complete Works – an early series of recordings supervised by composer Edgard Varese – featuring versions of what were then his complete works! The record begins with two larger pieces – readings of "Integrales" and "Octandre" conducted by Frederic Waldman, working with the New York Wind Ensemble, who provide some very haunting tones, with additional percussion from the Julliard Percussion Orchestra on the first piece, which is a bit more dramatic. Rene Le Roy continues on the flute solo piece "Density 21.5", and the Julliard Percussion Orchestra comes back for a reading of the classic "Ionisation". The last work is one of the most striking – the three-part "Interpolations", which features "organized sound" compositions, realized on magnetic tape – one of Varese's haunting moves into early electronic music! Next is the Columbia album Music Of Edgar Varese – key Robert Craft takes on three earlier compositions, and the debut of "Poeme Electronique", which was created at the 1958 Brussels World Fair! "Ionisation" has a complex mix of percussion instruments, played by thirteen players – with a quality that's almost a key precursor to the music of Harry Partch. "Density 21.5" is a haunting piece for solo flute – filled with unusual tones and textures – and "Integrales" has a fuller orchestral presentation, and a nicely bombastic vibe, with woodwind tones and percussion colliding beautifully! That sound continues in "Octandre" – a 20s composition that shows just how far Varese was ahead of his time – as does "Hyperprism", from the same year, which is even more dramatic. "Poem Electronique" has a very different approach – all analogue electronics, used in an illustration of Varese's concept of "organized sound", but with a feel that's similar to the best musique concrete material of the 50s. Last up is the Columbia album Sound Spectacular – which offers three very different slices of the genius of Edgar Varese – presented here on a set of classic Columbia recordings from the early 60s! "Arcana" is perhaps the most ambitious work here – structured for an orchestra of 120 musicians, 70 of whom are string players – although the core energy of the piece seems to come from the 8 percussionists who handle a wide variety of instruments – creating those stark sounds that mark some of Varese's most important compositions – which the strings, brass, and woodwinds cluster around in equally powerful ways! "Deserts" is a piece that's more subtle, and much longer – mixing a variety of electronic sounds and instrumental moments, with shifting sonic spaces and volumes throughout – all to make up a side-long recording filled with moody moments and more powerful electronic bursts. "Offrandes" is a selection of two songs – in a haunting blend of woodwind instruments, percussion, and trumpet – plus vocals from soprano Dona Precht. CD
