El Gran ComboTu Querias Boogaloo? – Toma Boogaloo!/You Wanted Boogaloo? – Take Boogaloo! ... LP
Gema, Late 60s. Very Good ... $14.99
El Gran Combo are well known for their work in many styles – but it's their boogaloo work that really sends us, and this album's full of boogaloo tracks! The group's at their best in the format – tight, hard, and lean – and although their take on boogaloo is a bit different than that of the New York scene, the genre still brings out the best in their work. Titles include "Baila Mi Shing A Ling", "Sway To & Fro", "Chiquita", "Boogaloo Con Bajo", "Sabor A Guaguanco", "Shing A Ling For My Baby", and "Tu Quieras Boogaloo? Toma Boogaloo!". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El KintoEl Kinto – Circa 1968 ... LP
Clave/Lion, 1968. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A seminal album by El Kinto – a short-lived but crucially important group in the Uruguay rock scene of the late 60s! El Kinto were a seminal link between the beat group sounds of the earlier South American scene, and some of the headier, tripper work to come in the psychedelic years – and their music was an unusual blend of local roots and more ambitious rock – served up in styles that were somewhat different than the candombe music of other artists on the scene. Core rock instrumentation was often augmented by a bit of Latin percussion – used in a way that created a nicely earthy feel at the bottom of most of the tunes, which was in contrast to the cleaner, but also somewhat spare use of guitars on the top. There's a criss-crossing sensibility here that's not unlike Brazilian Tropicalia at times – although clearly not as politically motivated, nor as culturally radical – and what really blows us away about these tunes is the overall sense of sound – a simple, but extremely effective placement of all the simplest elements, to create music without easy comparison (even though we've been trying for the last few lines!) Group members include percussionist Ruben Rada and South American rock legend Eduardo Mateo – and the album features 14 tracks that include "Jose", "Mejor Me Voy", "Don Pascual"," Voy Pensando", "Esa Tristeza", "Yo Volvere Por Ti", "Estoy Sin Ti", and "Pippo". Great reissue – very heavy vinyl and cover, and with an insert with notes! LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissue pressing from 2009.)

✨✧ El Michels AffairAdult Themes ... CD
Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. CD

✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". "El Doctor" is a lively little number with a nice hint of revolution – performed here by a combo from Italy, but with a very South American vibe! The percussion is upbeat, the horns punch along with the groove, and the rolling lyrics are nice and compelling – and the flipside features "Tamarita", a tune with a bit more of a sing-song vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

El WaliTiris ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 1994. New Copy ... $18.99 21.98
A fantastic album from a West Saharan group dedicated to political independence of the Sahrawi people, but who also work with a great blend of older acoustic styles and a few contemporary electric elements! The music has maybe a touch of Tuareg guitar in the mix, but there's also some powerful vocals, earthy percussion, and some lighter electric touches from time to time – the last of which are never overdone or over-polished, so that the voices and percussion shine through in a beautiful way! Things get a bit funky at points, but the music is maybe best when it's more evocative, and has a heartfelt political power – on titles that include "The Day Of The Free Nation", "Sing For The Nation Day", "Long Love The Sahrawi Army", "20 Of May", "Let Me Know Our Past", "I Sing For The Country", "Song For The Prophet", and "Brave People". ✨✧ Kahil El'ZabarWhat It Is ... CD
Delmark, 2013. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the freshest albums in years from Chicago percussion legend Kahil El'Zabar – the recording debut of a great little combo he's been heading for the past few years – and a group who would have been right at home during the more progressive 60s years at Blue Note! The sound here is wonderfully soulful, but in ways that are different than some of Kahil's other records – thanks in part to the strong use of tenor from Kevin Nabors – a player who helps give the record a bold bite right upfront, with tones that hearken back to some of the late 60s' best soulful and spiritual moments – played with more forward focus than some of El'Zabar's other reedmen. The album's definitely got an AACM pedigree, but it's more straightforward, too – and we mean that in a good way – often pushed by modal elements that seem to also give Kahil a rich new sort of energy in his drumming too. Justin Dillard plays some great Hammond, Fender Rhodes, and piano – and the group's completed by Junius Paul on bass. Titles include "Song Of Myself", "What It Is", "Impressions", "The Nature Of", and "Kari". CD

Pura Vida (France), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
That's a pretty darn striking image on the cover – and the sounds within are pretty darn striking too – a fantastic mix of Cuban roots and contemporary hip hop production! French producer Al Quetz works here with El Tipo Este of Cuban hip hop group Obsesion – and the style is far more than just the sum of its parts – as the pair resonate together with bits of funk, dub, and other sonic subcurrents – all of which give the record a sense of urgency that we really didn't expect! Lyrics are all in Spanish, and Guts handled some of the arrangements – amidst instrumentation that also includes great touches on trombone, flute, and keyboards. Titles include "Zafra", "Sin Protocolo", "Regla Sound System", "Tu Vera", "Dicen", "Revolucion Vivencial", and "Inflowencias". CD

About as tight as you can get from the team of Pacheco and vocalist Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez – a record cut after a strong run of sides from Pacheco's Nuevo Tumbao, a finely-honed unit that moved with supple grace few other groups could match! Pete's great here on both the mellower cuts and uptempo numbers – a singer who brought a new depth to Latin music in the 60s, really working here at the height of his powers. The first album by trippy Turkish trio 3 Hur El – a great blend of Eastern sounds and western styles – all coming together with a slightly progressive feel! The instrumentation often includes some heavy basslines underneath lighter lines on acoustic strings – a blend of folksy and modern that's topped by passionate vocals and often underscored by some great heavy percussion – all in a style that's a bit otherworldly, but oddly quite compelling! The set's definitely the kind that makes you say "I don't know what's going on here – but I sure like it anyway" – and titles include "Haram", "Ve Olum", "Ask Davasi", "Diday Dom", "Kara Yazi", "Olum Al Beni", "Pembelikler", and "Anadolu Dansi". Famoso/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's a mighty big loaf of bread on the cover – and there's a mighty big sound on the record as well – a fantastic blend of early 70s salsa modes from this very cooking little combo – served up in a blend of two saxes, two trumpets, and plenty of great percussion and piano! The group clearly draw plenty of inspiration from the New York scene – particularly that moment when the tight Latin soul combos of the late 60s were moving into salsa styles for the 70s – but there's also some other South American rhythms at work here too, although not enough to knock the album off its strongly salsa course. Jackie Carazo handles lead vocals – and titles include "El Huevo", "Pan Con Salsa", "Bomba Pa Los Cueros", "La Bailadora", "Mira Muneca", and "A La Fiesta Del Mar" – plus a great groovy cover of "Oye Como Va". ✨✧ Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual TrioAncestors Are Amongst Us ... CD
Katalyst, Early 90s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing lost recording from Kahil El'Zabar – and a Ritual Trio record to rival the great sessions cut for the Sound Aspects label in the 80s! As on some of those records, this one features Kahil's beautiful percussion blended with the bass work of Malachi Favors and trumpet of Lester Bowie – both players who step out here in ways that are even more soulful and spiritual than their performances with the Art Ensemble of Chicago! The tracks are very lean, organic, and build beautifully during the course of the recording – these thoughtfully-flowing numbers that are a perfect summation of the essence that Kahil was trying to get at with the Ritual Trio – almost a more spiritual, righteous take on the Great Black Music ideas forged by the AACM – taken to territory that was even more naturalistic than before. Favors' playing is amazing – and the recording is a perfect example of why his work on bass has always been so revolutionary – and Bowie is really at his best too, with none of the hoke that he could sometimes pick up in his later years. Titles include "Inner Sanctum", "Ju Ju Call", "In The Belly Of Now", "Dawning Of The Aware Ones", "The Ancestors Are Among Us", and "Celestial Dance". CD

A horse's head that would make Don Corleone proud – and a batch of grooves that has as much kick as you might find in the back end of the animal too! The album's an early groover from El Gran Combo – recorded with a nice raw edge on most numbers, and an upbeat groove that shows the group as being as tight in the 60s as they were during later, more famous years. Apart from a few boleros, the tracks are mostly swinging, with some great jazzy horns – saxes by Eddie Perez and Hector Santos, driven strongly by percussion that includes bongos from a young Roberto Roena. Vocals are by Pellin Rodriguez and Andy Montanez, and grooves are arranged by Rafael Ithier – with titles that include "La Cara", "Estetica", "El Cobrador", "Meneito Me", "Los Cuadrosos", "La Bolita", "Consentida", "El Pasajero Cuna", and "Clavo Y Martillo". ✨✧ El Michels AffairSounding Out The City ... LP
Truth & Soul/Big Crown, 2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Easily one of the greatest new funk records of the 21st Century – and a set that goes way beyond some of the cliches that are currently gripping others in the deep funk underground! El Michels Affair have a cool, easygoing style to their music – one that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk – and which makes for tunes that have a looser structure overall, which allows much more room for instrumental interplay, and the kind of sweet surprises that make the album so great! These guys have a real penchant for an unusual rhythm and interesting instrumental flair – and they borrow as much from 70s soundtracks and Latin albums as they do from the funky 45 era that clearly gave them their start. Totally fresh all the way through, and a record that delights us a lot more than we might have expected! Titles include "Detroit Twice", "El Pueblo Unido", "Behind The Blue Curtains", "Ocho Rios", "Hung Up On My Baby", "This Song's For You", and "Slide Show". LP, Vinyl record album

Late 60s magic from El Gran Combo – grooving here at the height of their powers, and still moving nicely with a very youthful vibe! There's a few echoes of the group's previous Latin Soul sets here – especially on the piano lines – but the overall vibe is towards straighter early salsa, the sound that would make the combo huge in the 70s – but which comes off almost even better on a record like this! Rafael Ithier handles piano and leads the group – and the combo features two sax players, who help bring in a sharper sound alongside the vocals, trumpets, and percussion. Our favorite-ever album by Alice Coltrane – a masterpiece of spirit and soul, recorded in a wonderfully open-handed style! The album's mostly a spare batch of tracks cut by Alice and her trio with Ron Carter and Ben Riley – but also features some guest work on sax by Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders on a few tracks. Pharoah and Joe blow with beautiful post-Coltrane spirituality on the tracks "Ptah The El Daoud" and "Mantra" – but equally great is the beautiful spare piano cut "Turiya & Ramakrishna" – an incredible tune that has Alice playing with a soulfulness you'd hardly expect! A real treasure all the way through – and the kind of album that ranks with the best in the Impulse catalog! CD

Tico, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
The Soul of Spanish Harlem – and the upbeat sound of the Joe Cuba Sextet – a hard-to-find album recorded just before the dawn of the classic Latin soul era! This one has been underappreciated for years, which is a shame, because it's got a lot of very nice grooves with that tight Joe Cuba Sextet sound – full snapping percussion and tight rhythms. There's also a few romantic tracks led by keys and a surprisingly warm approach to the vocals, but most of the set is pretty straight ahead Latin! Tracks include "You're Gone", "La Fuga Pal Monte", "Galan, Galan", "Y Sigue", "Solo Por Ti", "Guaguanco Del Jibarito", "Una Nenita", and "El Tapon". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A mix of Latin modes and soulful fusion grooves – both of which make for an excellent album from the post-CTI years of reedman Joe Farrell! Joe plays soprano, tenor, and flute on the record – always with that well-crafted groove he first brought to jazz back in the 60s, working in a more modern context – still sounding wonderfully fresh here in the larger backdrops of a record like this – definitely a cut above most mainstream artists of his nature! Production is by Ralph MacDonald and William Eaton, with a great blend of soul and jazz – and all cuts are instrumental, with help from players who include Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on keyboards, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. Titles include "Promise Me Your Love", "La Catedral Y El Toro", "Disco Dust", "Cyclone Rider", "Is It Asking Too Much", and "Imagine Me". CD

The music here is very much in Daniel's classic tradition – a warm approach to club music, with some nicely jazzy touches along the way – keyboard-heavy, in a style that almost makes Grau the Venezuelan version of Giorgio Moroder – not not nearly as cold, and with a soulful glow that lives up to the image on the cover! A really mindblowing set of music from late 70s Lebanon – an ambitious blend of jazzy instrumentation, poetic vocals, and larger instrumental impulses – all with this soaring sort of energy that reminds us of some of the more complex Brazilian records of the 70s, or of some of our favorite genre-crossing projects on the Saravah Records label! Most of the tracks feature sweet electric piano lines next to these crispy guitar riffs – flowing with a style that's open and a bit breezy, but given a nice sort of grounding by the vocals of Issam Hajali – an artist who's clearly trying to find a more universal sort of spirit with this album! The whole thing is quite tough to put in words, but has that extra special sort of vibe that's made some of the best of these Habibi Funk reissues so amazing – music we never would have heard otherwise, with titles that include "Lam Azal", "Khobs", "Intazirne", "Yawma Konna", "Ada", and "Ana Damir El Motakallim.". Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". CD

Infopesa (Peru), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99
A cornerstone of the classic chica groove in Peru – and one of the albums that put Juaneco and his very groovy combo on the musical map of 70s South America! The tracks are mostly instrumental, and have a fantastically tight blend of percussion, keyboard lines, and electric guitar – the last of which has a style that's directly tied to surf guitar modes of the American west coast of the 60s – but with leaner, snakier, spookier styles that are completely sublime – and which often have a way of stepping around the rhythms that would have made The Ventures weep! Production is great – with just the right dose of echo to make everything sound even more wonderful – and titles include "El Pajarito Pajero", "La Marcha Del Sapo", "Aguita De Sachachorro", "Me Robaron Mi Runa Mula", "Vacilando Con Ayahuasca", "Volando", and "La Incognita". A funky combo, but one with a real difference – as they seem to find whole new corners of the globe in which to work their magic – almost an imagined space of cultural criss-crossing, all set to some mighty funky bass and drums! The core element here is the guitar – which echoes exotic modes that seem to move from Mexican folk, to contemporary Tuareg sounds, and even a bit of southwest guitar instrumental echo – but all in ways that are very fresh and different, and which also sound quite unusual compared to the usual use of guitar in a funky combo! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but really the guitar is the main "voice" – and one that speaks volumes – on titles that include "Lady & Man", "Como Te Quiero", "Shades Of Man", "Maria Tambien", "Como Me Quieres", "A Hymn", and "Rules". A trippier version of Khruangbin than we're used to – but that's maybe no surprise, given that the whole album's a dub version of the Con Todo El Mundo record – with all the best funky currents of that sweet set, and some wilder modes as well! Drums and bass really get a great workout – and the production isn't the usual Jamaican-inspired dub, but a mode that's maybe partly got a David Axelrod quality – as these guys use the instrumental moments to open up into all these dark, moody corners – while still keeping things nicely funky overall. Titles include "With All The World", "Sisters & Brothers", "How I Love", "Four Of Five", "Hasta El Cielo", and "Order Of Operations". ✨✧ La LupeFiebre Con El Diablo En El Cuerpo ... CD
Discuba, 1960. Used ... $5.99
Early work from La Lupe – but a set that already shows the highly dynamic style that would make her a real standout in 60s Latin music! A number of the tracks here are listed as "rock" in the rhythms – which doesn't exactly mean that Lupe's singing rock music, but already shows an ear for the kind of elements that would cross over to larger audiences than just the usual Latin crowd – almost a prequel to the styles that would come up even more during the Latin Soul years! Many of these numbers are kind of a Spanish-language equivalent of Jovem Guarda modes in mid 60s Brazil – although maybe a bit less rocking overall – and Lupe's vocals are amazing in the setting, almost even more striking than in later years. Titles include "Alone", "Quiereme Siempre", "Fiebre", "Con El Diablo En El Cuerpo", "Crazy Love", and "Es Una Bomba". CD

One of Eddie's early gems with his La Perfecta group – a hard-hitting ensemble with a sound that encompassed the charanga era, yet which also pointed the way towards many styles past it. Eddie's strong piano is a very big part of the group's success – jazzing things up at the right moments, and adding in some blue tones that pitch the whole album slightly to the left – but the rest of the players are equally skilled, and the remarkable thing about the record is how well it comes off as a full team effort. A wonderfully hard-to-categorize album from the start of the 80s – a Mexican record that mixes folkloric roots with electronic instrumentation – but all in a way that sounds much more ancient than you'd expect for the time! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. One of the most obscure albums ever recorded by Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava – and one of the greatest as well! The set is a rare meeting between Rava and some key players on the Argentine scene of the mid 70s – a great quartet that features Fernando Gelbard on Fender Rhodes, Adalberto Cevasco on bass, Nestor Astarita on drums, and Chango Faras Gomez on percussion – all working with Rava in a groove that's maybe warmer and more soulful than both his spacious and more experimental sides recorded in America and overseas! We always love Gelbard on Rhodes – and his work here really adds a lot to the record – never dominating, but always shaping the sound and forming the rhythm patterns – while Rava soars out with some open, well-placed solos. A beautiful new chapter in the career of Raphael Sebbag – work that's quite different than the grooves he first did in United Future Organization, and a lot more organic as well! There's a fair bit of Latin style running through the set – but not in a hokey way, and more in a complicated blend of percussion, sound samples, and larger orchestrations! The whole thing's extremely evocative – really fitting the "fantasy" in the title, and filled with a wealth of cultural references that Raphael always brought to his work with UFO, but never this fully. Some tracks here are remixed by Zero Db, Yuichiro Fujimoto, Killer Bong, and others – with very different versions of similar tunes working together as a long suite of tracks.
