Will Boulware & RainbowHarmony (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Eighty Eights/Sony (Japan), 2003. Used Gatefold ... $11.99 19.99
A well-crafted comeback from pianist Will Boulware and his Rainbow group – one that shares many qualities of his Over Crystal Green album, but which also takes things a bit further! Will's still got that great blend of acoustic and electric keys here – a sound that's really the strongest side of the record, and which takes us back to those first mid 70s moments when keyboardists were blending the two modes to reach an even fuller sound than before. But one main difference here is the presence of Phoebe Snow on vocals on 3 of the album's tracks – giving the record a bit more of a "soul" feel at those moments, in a way that occasionally disturbs the gentle Rainbow balance. Still, the overall sound here is still pretty great – with tenor from Michael Brecker, guitar from Peter Bernstein, drums from Steve Gadd, and a bit of guest keys from Philippe Saisse. Titles include "One Finger Snap", "Trouble In Mind", "Kentucky", "Foolish Door", "New & Old", "Peace", and "Rainbow". CD
(2013 Japanese Blu-spec CD2 pressing in a nice gatefold sleeve – includes obi!)

✨✧ Great Jazz TrioAutumn Leaves ... CD
441/Eighty Eights, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones – a lineup that's changed a bit from the classic 70s incarnation of the group, but which still has Hank working very much at the the height of his lyrical powers! This excellently-recorded set is a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese-based Eighty Eights label – a return to the simple elegance of some of the best Japanese-recorded sessions of the 70s, ones that take American players, and present them in uncluttered, straight ahead brilliance. Titles include "Blue Bossa", "Six & Four", "Summertime", "Yesterdays", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Eighty Eights/Columbia, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful return to form for the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones – a recent session, but one recorded with the warmth and imagination of their best 70s Japanese sets! The album's done in the ultra-high fidelity style of the 88's label – and features the group stretching out in some wonderful readings of standards that include "Long Ago & Far Away", "Caravan", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". ✨✧ Clark Terry & Max RoachFriendship ... CD
Eighty Eights/Columbia, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most exciting records we've heard from either player in years – a really magic session that captures all the raw energy of their best recordings of the 50s! Roach is a real demon on the drums – both tightly swinging, but also showing aspects of his years in the left end of the jazz spectrum – and Terry response accordingly, by blowing those raw, unfettered, almost earthy notes that we first came to love on his early albums for Emarcy and Argo. The rest of the group is comprised of Don Friedman on piano and Marcus McLaurine on bass – but it's really just Terry and Roach jamming together on most of the set – poised somewhere between the history and future of jazz! Titles include "The Profit", "Let's Cool One", "Statements", "Lil Max", "I Remember Clifford", and "Brushes & Brass". CD

✨✧ Will Boulware & RainbowOver Crystal Green (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
441/Eighty Eights (Japan), 2002. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great follow-up to Will Boulware's classic 70s fusion session Crystal Green – recorded with a new Rainbow group, one that features Will Lee on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Michael Brecker and Bob Berg on tenor, Randy Brecker on trumpet, and Jon Werking on synthesizers. The feel is amazingly similar to the original – a great set of mellow fusion tracks handled with a smooth blend of acoustic and electric playing, all coming off with a lot more sincerity than you might expect. Will plays acoustic piano and Hammond B3 – and tracks include "Seascape", "Appearance", "Scenery", "Waltz For Debby", "Voyage", and "Bells". CD
