Cyclemates/Boston Tea Party/Orphan EggCycle Savages ... LP
AIP, 1970. Sealed ... $59.99
A killer biker soundtrack – with some great moments! Once again, the AIP method holds fast – take a bunch of studio musicians, form a bunch of "fake" little rock groups, and turn out a collection of instantly cooked tunes designed to capture the now sound of today! One of the groups on here sounds a heck of a lot like the Arrows – The Cyclemates, a group whose tracks are written by Jerry Styner, and feature some great guitars, tight drums, and a nice funky approach that's similar to Les Baxter's funky work. Another nice one is Orphan's Egg – who have a heavy guitar and sweet vocal approach. Titles include "Virgin's Vengeance" and "Theme From Cycle Savages" – both by the Cyclemates, and excellent funky instrumental soundtrack numbers – plus "Mourning Becomes Electra", "We Have Already Died", and "Falling" by Orphan's Egg; "Fantasy" and "Chained To Your Heart" by Boston Tea Party; and "Fly Superman Fly" by Randy Johnson. Steve Lacy, Togashi Masahiko, Takahashi YujiEgg Farm Hall Festival ... CD
Crown (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... $22.99
Some of the darkest work we've heard from soprano sax legend Steve Lacy – at least in this part of his career – some fierce work in the company of pianist Takahashi Yuji and percussionist Togashi Masahiko – who also get some time of their own on the record! The album features two long improvisations by the trio – and Lacy seems to pull more of an edge than usual in the company of both players, driven on strongly especially by Masahiko's percussion, which can be loud and stark. Yuji performs one piano solo with a slightly more introspective vibe – then also plays in duet alongside Masahiko, with this very earthy, organic combination of sounds. Great stuff throughout – and a fantastic reminder of the unique nexus of time/place/person that happens with the best improvised jazz! CD

Egg/Esoteric (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD & DVD ... $29.99
A fantastic collection of work from electronic wizard Tim Blake – a set that's a nice counterpart to albums under his own name, as it also features singles, work with other groups, and some rare archive material that's especially nice! CDs 1 and 2 bring together Tim's issued legacy of the 70s, plus bits from later years too – including work with Gong on "The Octave Doctors & The Crystal Machine" and "Other Side Of The Sky", "Surf" with Saratoga Space Messengers, and "Lighthouse" with Hawkwind – plus his own tracks "Midnight", "Synthese Intemporel", "Passage Sur La Cite Des Revelations", "Who's Gonna Win The War", "A Return To The Clouds", "Waiting For Nati", "Jacuzzi Surfing", "Flating", "Byzance (live)", "Absent Friends", and "Tide Of The Century". CD3 features really great archive material – "Ionic Clouds 2", "Psychedelic Springs", "Forteresse/Crystal Mirrors To Infinity", "Oming In", "Mirrors Of Light", "Metro Poly Train", and "Tide Of The Century (live)". DVD features Les Musiciens/Tim Blake – a French TV special from 1979, with four long tracks! CD

Patrick VianBruits Et Temps Analogues ... LP
Egg (France), 1976. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Definitely the sounds promised in the title – and a sweet little set from 70s Paris, and one that bridges the gap between earlier electric prog and some of the clubbier cosmic sounds to come! The tunes are heavy on keyboards – great moog, Arp, and Fender Rhodes played by Patrick Vian and Georges Granier – mixed with guitar from Bernard Lavialle and lots of cool percussion from Mino Cinelu – all with a style that echoes some of the best modes of the Sky Records scene in Germany, but which has a tighter, more melodic approach overall! Things are still plenty trippy, but have a great sort of focus too – a wonderful balance that really makes the record stand out from more noodly, self-indulgent sets of the time. Titles include "Oreknock", "Sphere", "Grosse Nacht Musik", "Barong Rouge", "Tricentennial Drag", and "R&B Degenerit". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Popul VuhNosferatu ... CD
Egg/BMG, 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The spooky soundtrack to Werner Herzog's remake of Nosferatu from the late 70s – featuring a spare, moody score that's quite different than some of Popul Vuh's other work. The music almost seems to bubble out of the ground like Nosferatu himself coming out of his coffin in the minutes after dusk – using light electronics to set a tone, but also employing a bit of what seems to be flute, plus occasional acoustic guitar, which has a very striking effect in this setting. Titles include "Mantra", "Die Nacht Derhimmel", "Through Pains To Heaven II", "On The Way", and "Venus Principal". CD

Lance FergusonRare Groove Spectrum ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Lance Ferguson has given us plenty of great work over the years – from his work in The Bamboos, to all his many other projects – yet as much as we've liked all of those, this one might actually be one of his best – a fantastic reworking of rare groove tracks from the 70s, all with a nicely changed-up sense of instrumentation! The set's mostly instrumental, and Lance takes on tracks originally recorded by James Mason, Pleasure, Funk Inc, and other names who are big heavyweights 'round these parts – served up with very strong instrumentation by a combo that includes members of The Bamboos, Hiatus Kaiyote, and The Putbacks. Titles include "Sweet Power Your Embrace", "Goodbye So Long", "Joyous", "Egg Roll", "Brazilian Rhyme", "Am I Wrong", "A Love I Believe In", "Noches De Viaje", "The Panther", and "Smokey Joe's La La". CD also features a great version of the Jack McDuff tune "Oblighetto". CD

✨✧ GolemOrion Awakes ... CD
Acme/Lion, 1970s. New Copy ... $6.99
Early 70s space rock from Golem – epically paced, trippy, expertly done wigged out instrumental rock that was purportedly laid down by heavies from the soon-to-be legendary krautrock scene working pseudonymously after hours in the studio! The album's a bit of an enigma – a set that's become famous over the years for its quality, but shrouded in enough mystery that some have doubted its story – although overall, the music here feels like the best early 70s space rock on labels like Brain or Egg – with lots of layers of keyboards and guitars over building drums and basslines. Interestingly, the producer as credited as Genius P Orridge for Pyramid Records, strangely similar to another name, wouldn't ya say? Titles include "Orion Awakes", "Stellar Launch", "Godhead Dance", "Jupiter & Beyond", and "The Returning". CD

Bobby HackettCoast Concert ... LP
Capitol, 1955. Very Good ... $4.99
A classic set from brassman Bobby Hackett – the kind of set that really helped him reach a big new audience in the postwar years! The style here is trad, but the set was recorded for Capitol in LA – so there's this sort of sparkling vibe to the whole thing too – a bit of an update that comes across in the lean presentation of the music, and the west coast way the players really manage to make a lot happen in a relatively small space! Bobby plays cornet, and other musicians include Abe Lincoln and Jack Teagarden on trombones, Matty Matlock on clarinet, Don Owens on piano, and Nappy Lamare on guitar – and Teagarden manages to sing a bit, in that raspy style of his we really love. Titles include "That's A Plenty", "New Orleans", "I Want A Big Butter & Egg Man", "Struttin With Some Barbecue", and "Royal Garden Blues".. LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.98
A lyrical masterpiece from the young Herbie Hancock – and a record that's really special for so many different reasons! First, the songs are really long and open – even more so than some of Hancock's other work – with a quality that's balanced between his soul jazz roots, and some of the freer ideas he was exploring with key counterparts of the time! Next, the group features a quartet with Freddie Hubbard on cornet – an instrument he didn't play that often, but which creates a really special sound here – one that's cool and compressed, but still has a sharp bite, too – especially over the inventive rhythms laid down by Ron Carter on bass and Anthony Williams on drums. All players are capable of going out – and have strong "new thing" cred by this point – but they keep it inside all the way through, but with a balanced sense of darkness that's really beautiful. The album features Hancock's classic (and oft-sampled) version of "Cantaloupe Island" – plus "One Finger Snap", "Olioqui Valley", and "The Egg". LP, Vinyl record album

Athens Of The North (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
Too young to have caught a 70s funk band in the clubs? Here's the solution – a rare performance by a cool combo from Tulsa – captured live in a very hip club setting! The mode here is different than sounds experienced on a funky 45 – as the tracks are open, long, and have a nicely jamming vibe – really pushing towards the 10 minute mark on each track, as the group lets their instrumental interplay flow, peppering the performance with lyrics to egg the instruments on! The group features Fender Rhodes, riffing guitar, bass, and drums – plus two lead singers, and a sometime female backup – on the original cuts "Love Everything About You", "Valentine Love", "Just A Song", and "Keep On Smiling". Stanley TurrentineSpoiler (non-RVG pressing) ... CD
Blue Note, 1966. Used ... $4.99
Stanley Turrentine's no spoiler here – as his tenor sax soars out over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke Pearson – all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life! The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from the cover – a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic Joyride album, but a bit more open and free – thanks to the lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on baritone sax – plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates from the time – particularly those with Donald Byrd – the use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along. And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really a horn section in the conventional way – just a group of like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music! Titles include "La Fiesta", "The Magilla", "Sunny", "Maybe September", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", and "When The Sun Comes Out". CD

Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
A weird and wonderful little collection – maybe the first Easter-themed compilation we've ever seen – but one that barely hews to that rule as well! The set instead features lots of great 50s numbers that seem to deal with both chickens and rabbits – plus a few roosters too – many tracks that have the hillbilly, early rock, and rockabilly vibe you'd expect from the Bear Family label – served up as a really romping collection that never lets up at all! The package is great, with very detailed notes, and a look that's as cool as the cover – and tracks include "Eggbert The Easter Egg" by Rosemary Clooney, "Up Jumped A Rabbit" by Sam Butera, "The Chicken & The Bop" by Lloyd Price, "Red Hen Hop" by Ted Daigle & The Midnighters, "A Chicken Ain't Nothin But A Bird" by Nellie Lutcher, "Sixteen Chickens & A Tambourine" by Roy Acuff, "I Hates Rabbits" by Jerry Neal, "The Fickle Chicken" by The Atmospheres, "Chicken Shot Blues" by Eddie Cochran, "The Chicken" by Roscoe Gordon, "Let's Go Bunny Huggin" by Sonny James, "Rabbit Action" by Jimmy Haggett, "Crazy Chicken" by James Gallagher, and "Bunny Hop Rock" by Slim Martin & The Blue Hill County Boys. Alshire/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A totally wonderful look at the late 60s Alshire label – an unusual cheapo imprint on the LA scene of the time, one that was mostly created to cash in on mainstream trends – but which somehow managed to make some amazing music in the process! Alshire was one of those discount store labels that tried to fool shoppers into thinking they were buying something hip – but instead sold them its own homegrown versions of psych, garage, or other groovy styles of the time. Yet despite these sneaky motives, the label actually found a way to bring together really interesting studio talents for their efforts – which has resulted in a legacy that's made some of their albums collectors treasures over the years – even if the process and contents are sometimes a mystery! This set does a great job of getting to the heart of the mystery – by offering up a huge booklet of notes that includes way more information than the label ever gave you with their records – notes on their history, the background performers, and other information – along with 82 tracks from the label's catalog. CD 1 features three full albums – the self-titled Animated Egg psych classic, plus Sounds Of Today and Astro Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000, both issued under the name of 101 Strings. CD 2 is dedicated entirely to The California Poppy Pickers – maybe the best-known group to come from the Alshire stable – with 26 tracks that include a few originals, and their fantastic reworking of other folks' tunes. CD 3 features 26 more tunes – recorded by artists who include The Mustang, Icarus, Doctor Marigold's Prescription, Autumn, Modern Sounds, Jane & Eve & The Creations, John Bunyan's Progressive Pilgrims, and The Heads Of The Family. Fantastic – and long overdue! CD

VariousPolitically Incorrect ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Prepare to be offended – but in the best possible way – as this mad collection serves up a whole host of postwar tracks in many styles – all of which have a lyrical bent that would hardly be acceptable today! Some cuts are from the mainstream – which might be excused for their insensitive portrayal of subcultures – but other tracks from genres like blues, country, and jazz often come across with some oddly offensive lyrics at points – yet in ways that maybe have some degree of charm, given their outdated ideas. In fact, the collection's maybe a good reminder that things have never been that easy for most folks in the American music scene – that someone's success is often stomping on someone else's idea – in this case handled in a range of subject matter that might offend Chinese Americans, African Americans, women, hillbillies, and a fair bit of other folks too – with subject matter that deals with differences in language, cultures, intelligence, and even driving – plus a sideline of songs that are suspiciously strong on date rape themes. The package comes with the usual great Bear Family presentation – excellent graphics that support the selection of 31 tracks that include "Women Drivers" by The Playmates, "Chinese Rock & Egg Roll" by Buddy Hackett, "How Can You Leave A Man Like This" by Ella Mae Morse, "Squaws Along The Yukon" by Hank Thompson, "No Chemise Please" by Gerry Granahan, "Calling All Cows" by Blues Rockers, "Get Out Of The Car" by Sammy Davis Jr, "Never Trust A Woman" by Red Foley, "I Love Paris" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Run For Your Life" by Gary Lewis & The Playboys, "Girl Fifteen" by Floyd Dixon, and "Slap Er Down Agin Paw" by Arthur Godfrey & The Too Fat Trio. Lee may not know his math, but he sure knows how to give us some great music – both back when he was working as the Square Egg, and now when he's out under his own name too! The man's a one man force in underground soul – a very creative songwriter and sharp-edged producer who's always out to make music that's a cut above the rest, and which doesn't fall into some of the easier labels and categories of the current soul underground! This time around, there's a vocal chorus working with Lee on some of the tracks – which creates an uplifting vibe and positivity that's even a bit different from his previous records. The album's got a good structure overall – with interludes balanced between the fuller tracks – and a sense of timing between the moods that really makes the whole thing work well together. A fantastic collaboration between Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino and avant bassist Reggie Workman – one that might seem unusual if you only know Hino's later work, but which was part of a few key collaborations that Hino and Workman did together at the start of the 70s – part of a real spiritual awakening in the trumpeter's music! The tracks are long and very expressive – and the group is mostly Japanese – with Hino on trumpet, Workman on bass, Motohiko Hino on drums, Kiyoshi Sugimoto on guitar, Mideo Ichikawa on electric piano, Yuji Imamura on conga, and Takao Uematsu on bass clarinet and tenor – all working together in a spirit that's clearly caught the imagination of the post-Coltrane years, and which is completely different than the straighter hardbop that Hino was recording just a few years previously. Pressure Sounds (UK), 1982. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99
A pair of near-lost albums – back to back, with bonus tracks too! The core album Rockers From The Land Of Reggae is a fantastic set from a very righteous group – Imojah, whose name means "unity" in Swahili, and who definitely work here with such a groove! The album's got a perfect blend of rockers energy and deeper dubby sensibilities – very complex in construction, but coming across with this beautifully organic blend of soulful vocals, head-nodding rhythms, and sublime studio abstraction! Winston McKenzie and Philllip Fulwood put the whole thing together, with Fulwood's vocals in the lead on most numbers – and titles include "I've Been Hurt", "No Love", "Weepin & Wailing", "Peace & Love", "Jah Love", and "One Song/Jah Music". CD also features the album Words In Dub – a spare spinoff from the Imojah album – served up here with some fantastic studio touches from Phillip Fullwood of that group! The album's even headier and dubbier than its core inspiration – almost as if Fullwood's going back in the laboratory, and continuing some experiments with even wilder results the second time around! The knowledge and wisdom of the lyrics are lost a bit in the dub-heavy presentation, but are more than made up for by the very strong sound. Titles include "Reorganize The Race", "Muzorewa & Yusuluke", "Terror", "Africa Rock", and "Words". Bonus tracks include 7" mixes of "I Gave You My Word (version)", "I Gave You My Word", "Love Everyone", and "Love Everyone (version)" – plus "I've Been Hurt (12" mix)" and "Happiness (12" mix)". CD

Heungkook KimGod Of Reggae (10 inch colored vinyl EP) ... LP
Beatball (Korea), 1994. Sealed ... $16.99
Take the title here a bit ironically – as the music is this unusual Korean take on reggae rhythms – maybe more an inspiration from Kingston, filtered through a maturing K-Pop style of the time – although often with some of the qualities that came about when dubbier rhythms were influencing mainstream pop in the UK at the start of the 80s! Most instrumentation is electric, although the drums feel live – and lyrics are in Korean throughout – on titles that include "Reggae Party", "You Sting My Heart", "Today Is A Good Day", "Swallowtail", "Memories Don't Fade", and "Strange Feeling". ✨✧ Laid BackWhite Horse/Sunshine Reggae ... 12-inch
Sire, 1983. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Just Sold Out!
What can we say? Despite the stupid appearance of the band, "White Horse" was a classic breakdance/electro track that crossed over so big it had kids in Kansas running out to by parachute pants and squares of linoleum to play along with the kids in the Bronx. Despite that runaway hit fame, though, the cut's a compelling one – with that perfect mix of post-disco post-punk grooves, warm in just the right places, and coldly appealing in others. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Peggy LeeBlack Coffee With Peggy Lee ... LP
Decca, 1953. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Wonderfully spare early jazz sides by Peggy, and the kind of material that's not easy to find amidst the bulk of her pop-oriented work. The album's a moving set of ballads and torchy numbers, recorded in small-combo fashion, in a style that's similar to some of Chris Connor's later Bethlehem work. The combo includes Cootie Chesterfield on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Max Wayne on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums. A real treasure – with titles like "A Woman Alone With The Blues", "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Easy Living", and "Black Coffee". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peggy LeeI Like Men! ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Very Good+ ... $5.99
A pretty bold assertion from Peggy Lee on the title – but she backs it up nicely in this obscure album of "guy" songs from the end of the 50s! There's a playful feel to the music that fits Lee's vocals very well – as do the bouncy arrangements from Jack Marshall, who turns out to be one of the best musical partners that Peggy could ever hope for! The set's got that nice jazzy groove that really makes Lee's return to Capitol Records so great – and titles include "Good For Nothing Joe", "Charley My Boy", "Jim", "Bill", and "It's So Nice To Have A Man Around the House". ✨✧ Peggy LeeMan I Love ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Quite a rare album from Peggy Lee – and a strange one too! The album features backings "conducted" by Frank Sinatra, done in a moody, flowing, dreamy and sad style – similar to his own work of the late 50s Capitol years, especially the more melancholy albums that we love so much. Frank's probably not doing the bulk of the work, though, as the record also credits Nelson Riddle with arrangements – and Riddle's sound here is very strong, again in the mood of his best sad work with Sinatra – territory explored on albums like Wee Small Hours or Only The Lonely. Titles include "That's All", "Please Be Kind", "He's My Guy", "Then I'll Be Tired Of You", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", and "If I Should Lose You". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of Peggy Lee's excellent Latin-tinged sides for Capitol Records – and an album that gives her already-great style of jazz vocals a nice added bounce in the backings! Arrangements are by Joe Harnell – not the most authentic of Latin talents, but an artist who's well-suited to fitting Peggy's pop jazz style of the 60s with some playfully rhythmic arrangements. Titles include "Come Dance With Me", "By Myself", "Fantastic", "Together Wherever We Go", "I Can't Resist You", and "Ole". LP, Vinyl record album

The Lively Set take on "Blues Get Off" with a great 60s Texas vibe – fast drums, tight horns, and a soaringly soulful vocal that hardly fits the blue theme of the lyric! Three Dudes are nice and funky on the flipside – working some fast-riffing guitar all the way through "I'm Begging You", and also punctuating things with some great JB-styled horns! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A nice box of classic and rare reggae from Fred Locks – his mid 70s masterpiece Black Star Liner, plus Black Star Liner In Dub, Love And Only Love with The Creation Steppers and The Missing Link – in a 4CD set! Black Star Liner is an underappreciated classic from '76 and it's a must have for diggers of harder-to-find mid 70s – recorded at Randy's, Channel One and Harry J's. The set also includes a complete set of rare dub versions – plus the Love And Only Love with the Creation Steppers and the Missing Link record. Each disc comes in slim, LP-style sleeve – with 47 tracks on 4CDs: "Black Star Liner", "Vision Of Redemption", "Sing-A-Long", "Walls", "Time To Change", "Love", "Love And Only Love", "Eternally", "Africa Africa", "No Further Woman", "Homeward Bound", "Rastafari Rule", "I Know", "Child Of The King", "Judge Not", "What You're Not Supposed To Do", "No Further Woman", "Wolf Wolf" and more. Great mellow soul from the Love Joys – the vocal duo of Sonia Abel and Claudette Brown – both singers who can glow together warmly, but still keep the right sort of edge to match the Wackie's rhythms! There's all these great dubby touches around the edges, but the lyrics always have this great straightforward vibe – and a perfect mix of righteous energy and more personal expression – as you'll hear on tunes that include "One Draw", "Long Lost Lover", "Stranger", "Let Me Rock You Now", "Chances Are" and "All I Can Say". Reggie LucasSurvival Themes ... LP
East West/Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A very nice set of Japanese fusion tracks cut by guitarist Reggie Lucas, with nice electric backing by Hubert Eaves on keyboard, Michael Henderson on bass, and other acoustic players like Mtume, John Stubblefield, and Clifford Adams. The set was recorded by East Wind in Japan, and the best cuts on here have that nice smooth fusion sound that graced their releases in this vein from the 70's. Lucas hits some excellent grooves with a warm sweeping feel, punctuated by tight solos with lots of blue notes, and these cuts include "Tender Years", "The Barefoot Song", and "Slewfoot". The "Survival Themes" suite is a bit more "out", and less to our liking, but there's more than enough good moments on the other cuts! LP, Vinyl record album

Redefinition, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 15.00
A beautiful album from drummer Reggie Quinerly – as much a jazz vocal album as an instrumental one – given that the record features a fair bit of guest work from Melanie Charles and Milton Suggs! Both singers are wonderful – richly soulful, with sophisticated textures and phrasing that move way past standard vocal jazz – every bit as hip as Reggie's own songs on the set, which provide a perfect setting for the singers! The mighty Orrin Evans is also on the record – adding his bold piano style to the set – and bassist Ben Wolfe rounds out the core trio with a wonderful vibe – while Jaleel Shaw contributes strong alto solos to half of the album as well. A hell of a charmer – with titles that include "Times We've Yet To See", "Scene", "Hope Is My Home", "You Bring Out My Best", "Still Frames", and "Love's Ferris Wheel". CD

Toots & The MaytalsReggae Got Soul ... LP
Island, 1976. Very Good ... $14.99
A classic moment from Frederick "Toots" Hibbert – a set that's maybe his equivalent to some of the key Island Records albums of the 70s from Bob Marley & The Wailers! Like those, the production here is top-shelf – handled partly by Joe Boyd, who brings a very respectful vibe to the set – and perhaps even goes for more of the soulful currents in Toots' vocals than before – at least in ways that might cross over more to American and British audiences than in the early days. Hibbert really seems to take to the spirit of the moment, and rises up with these beautifully expressive passages – of the sort that he may never have hit this well again! Titles include "Everybody Needs Lovin", "Living In The Ghetto", "So Bad", "Never You Change", "Rastaman", "Premature", and "Reggae Got Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

The cover looks gothic, but the sound is plenty darn groovy – a sweet set of sound library instrumentals from the 70s scene in Paris – most of them served up with an upbeat, clubby sort of vibe! Yan Tregger may not be one of those names that immediately comes to the lips of underground club collectors – but there's plenty of great clubby moments here, with grooves that bubble on tight basslines, swing with sweet keyboards, and often get lots of riffing guitar in the mix! Yet there's also some nicely weird touches too – as you might expect from a record that was cut far from the mainstream, as part of a studio library set – the kind of weird funky elements you might find on some of the more obscure 12" singles from the late 70s underground. Titles include "Carry On", "Gimmicky", "Sunny Wing", "Light Heart (parts 1 & 2)", "Riff On", "Lyric Soul", "Slow Zoom", and "This Time". CD

An underground funky gem – one that never made it past the collections of the elite sound library audience in the 70s – but which is well deserving of global acclaim! Yan Tregger works here in this style that's every bit as funky as his contemporaries on bigger library labels, but which also shows a strong love of club music too – not straight disco, at least not in any sort of "easy" way – but a real ear for just the right sort of basslines, keyboard parts, and uptempo rhythms to keep things moving throughout! Given the all-instrumental approach, think of this set as a jazzy take on clubby grooves – or maybe an instrumental funk record for the clubs – with great cuts that include "The Girl In The Gold", "Dawn & Darkness", "Friend Island", "The Last Girl", "Haunting Refrain", "Girls Will Be Girls", and "The Way Of All Flesh". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $29.99 34.98
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. Titles include "I'm Every Woman" by Latisha, "In The Rain" by rRnest Ranglin, "Reggae Beat Goes On" by Family Choice, "Ring My Bell" by Blood Sisters, "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" by Derrick Laro & Trinity, "Do It Nice & Easy" by Chariot Riders, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Upside Down" by Carol Cool, "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Sharon Forrester, "Rappers Delight" by Xanadu & Sweet Lady, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by Risco Connection, "Am I The Same Girl" by Charmaine Burnette, and "Be Thankful For What You Got" by One Blood. A classic Trojan Records compilation – of the same sort as their famous Tighten Up albums, but a lot more obscure! As with those gems, the approach here is to present the overseas listener with some of the coolest, most cutting tracks from the Kingston scene – numbers that probably saw initial release on dodgy 7" singles, given a proper formal release here – in a package that shows the cream of the crop of the reggae/rocksteady scene, circa 1969! The album's heavy on male singers and groups – and titles include "Tell the Children The Truth" by The Gaylads, "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" and "Now I Know" by Ken Boothe, "Rock It With Me" by The Melodians, "The Bitterness Of Life" by Bruce Ruffin, "Gave You My Love" by Delroy Wilson, "Staircase Of Time" by Tony Brevett, and "Money Day" by The Pioneers. VariousStep Forward Youth – Roots Masters From The Punky Reggae Party ... CD
VP, Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 18.98
A fantastic selection of tracks from a time when reggae and punk were really crossing over on the UK scene – the earliest years of the punk rock movement, when bands like The Clash, Slits, and others were bringing the sounds of Jamaica into much greater mainstream circulation! The cuts here aren't reggae punk – or punked-up reggae – but are instead the core tracks that influenced the late 70s UK generation – mostly roots reggae numbers from a few years before, whose politics and production really struck a chord with disenchanted youth in England! Don't worry about the package being too commercial, or too familiar – as the set list is a nicely deep dig, with all the right tracks – titles that include "Rebel" by Barry Ford Band, "The Barber Feel It" by Dr Alimantado & Jah Stitch, "Turn The Heater On" by Keith Hudson, "Pablo Meets Mr Bassie" by Agustus Pablo, "Jah Is I Guiding Star" by Tappa Zukie, "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" by Michael Rose, "Cool Out Son" by Junior Murvin, "Roast Fish & Cornbread" by Lee Perry, "Mr Cop" by Gregory Isaacs, "Two Sevens Clash" by Culture, and "Heavy Manners" by Prince Far-I. 2CD set features 36 tracks – 25 more than the single LP version! VariousTake Us Home – Boston Roots Reggae 1979 to 1988 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A surprisingly strong collection of reggae recorded in Boston during the 80s – or maybe not that surprising at all, given that the city had a growing Caribbean population, and a very strong college audience for the music! Still, the package is a huge discovery – strong quality work from a city that most folks would associate with just about any other style of music – with a key emphasis on the sorts of message-oriented cuts that helped reggae find a huge global audience in the generation of Bob Marley – carried forth here by a host of local acts working in very faithful, well-produced modes. The set's got a great booklet of notes – more than enough detail and explanation for this unique musical moment – and titles include "Take Us Home" and "Our Father's Land" by Danny Tucker, "Country Girl" and "Two Minute Warning"by Lambsbread, "Errol's Love" and "Oh What A Saturday Night" by Errol Strength, "Without Your Love" and "Nations Unite" by Healing Of The Nations, "Burning Fire" and "Condemnation Lion" by Zion Initiation, and "Love Is A Pleasure" by I Tones. ✨✧ Fela & Africa 70JJD (Johnny Just Drop)/Unnecessary Begging ... CD
Universal/MCA, 1976/1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 stunners – back to back on one CD! "JJD (Johnny Just Drop)" is a great live track recorded in 1977 at Fela's own Kalakuta Republic – and it's a great number that begins casually, with Fela talking a bit, introducing the conga player, before the band goes wild on the cut, an extended groover in triple-time that's also an attack on the way that Africans abroad can lose a sense of their own cultural value. Unnecessary Begging may not be the most famous of Fela albums, but it's got some great bits! The track "Unnecessary Begging" takes up all of side one of the original LP, and it begins with this amazingly spooky sax solo that starts out spare, then snakes through the building rhythm lines laid down by Tony Allen. "No Burudei" is took up side two, and it's a pumped-up groover with fast guitar and bass, rolling along in a classic Africa 70 groove, while the rest of the band slowly joins into the fray! CD

✨✧ Peggy LeeBasin Street East Proudly Presents Miss Peggy Lee ... LP
Capitol, 1961. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Peggy Lee's at Basin Street, but the set's an upbeat, swinging date that's right up there with her studio work for Capitol in the 60s! The album's billed as an "after hours" performance – and it's definitely got the relaxed feel to live up to that promise – a feel that's more small combo jazzy than other Lee work of the period, although it's still got that upbeat punch we love from the Capitol years. The group is directed by Joe Harnell, who also plays piano – and other members include Bob Donovan on flute, Willie Thomas and Phil Sunkel on trumpets, Dennis Budimir on guitar, and Chino Pozo on congas and bongos. Titles inlcude "I Got A Man", "The Second Time Around", "Fever", "Moments Like This", "Day In Day Out", and "Them There Eyes". CD also features a bonus track – "Call Me Darling". London/Abkco, 1968. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from The Rolling Stones – a set that still draws on all the bluesy roots of their best 60s material, yet which also shows a sharper, nastier edge as well! The album shows the tremendous sense of focus and power the Stones had in this crucial late 60s stretch – a bold step forward that would give them some of their most memorable moments ever, launched by this sublime set of tracks that includes "Sympathy For The Devil", "Street Fighting Man", "Dear Doctor", "Parachute Woman", "Prodigal Son", "Factory Girl", and "Stray Cat Blues". 50th Anniversary edition – on 180 gram vinyl, with a bonus12" single that includes the mono version "Sympathy For The Devil" on one side, and etched artwork on the other – plus a flexidisc featuring an interview with Mick Jagger in 1968! ✨✧ Yan TreggerDucks & Drakes ... LP
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album
