Tim BlakeLighthouse – An Anthology 1973 to 2012 (3CDs/DVD) ... CD
Egg/Esoteric (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD & DVD ... $19.99
A fantastic collection of work from electronic wizard Tim Blake – a set that's a nice counterpart to albums under his own name, as it also features singles, work with other groups, and some rare archive material that's especially nice! CDs 1 and 2 bring together Tim's issued legacy of the 70s, plus bits from later years too – including work with Gong on "The Octave Doctors & The Crystal Machine" and "Other Side Of The Sky", "Surf" with Saratoga Space Messengers, and "Lighthouse" with Hawkwind – plus his own tracks "Midnight", "Synthese Intemporel", "Passage Sur La Cite Des Revelations", "Who's Gonna Win The War", "A Return To The Clouds", "Waiting For Nati", "Jacuzzi Surfing", "Flating", "Byzance (live)", "Absent Friends", and "Tide Of The Century". CD3 features really great archive material – "Ionic Clouds 2", "Psychedelic Springs", "Forteresse/Crystal Mirrors To Infinity", "Oming In", "Mirrors Of Light", "Metro Poly Train", and "Tide Of The Century (live)". DVD features Les Musiciens/Tim Blake – a French TV special from 1979, with four long tracks! CD

Ella FitzgeraldJukebox Ella – The Complete Verve Singles Vol 1 ... CD
Verve, 1950s/1960s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
A much-needed look at a near-lost side of Ella's work for Verve – the singles she recorded for the label in the 50s and 60s, work that's very different than her more famous LPs! Historically, Ella's probably best remembered for her Songbook albums at Verve – serious efforts that focused on the work of 20th Century songwriters like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. But during the same years she was working on those projects, she also cut a tremendous amount of singles for the label – many of them in styles not heard on LPs. The set's got some really wonderful numbers that really open up our understanding of Ella – short jazzy tunes, catchy pop numbers, weepy ballads, bossa nova, novelty tracks, and even a few Holiday tunes – all packaged in a great 2CD set that includes 36 titles in all! Tunes include "Ol Man Mose", "Desafinado", "Stardust Bossa Nova", "All The Live Long Day", "I'm A Poached Egg", "Your Red Wagon", "But Not For Me", "Dreams Are Made For Children", "Stay There", "Hotta Chocolatta", "Too Young For The Blues", "It's Only A Man", and "Lonely Is". Herbie HancockEmpyrean Isles ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used ... $3.99
A lyrical masterpiece from the young Herbie Hancock – and a record that's really special for so many different reasons! First, the songs are really long and open – even more so than some of Hancock's other work – with a quality that's balanced between his soul jazz roots, and some of the freer ideas he was exploring with key counterparts of the time! Next, the group features a quartet with Freddie Hubbard on cornet – an instrument he didn't play that often, but which creates a really special sound here – one that's cool and compressed, but still has a sharp bite, too – especially over the inventive rhythms laid down by Ron Carter on bass and Anthony Williams on drums. All players are capable of going out – and have strong "new thing" cred by this point – but they keep it inside all the way through, but with a balanced sense of darkness that's really beautiful. The album features Hancock's classic (and oft-sampled) version of "Cantaloupe Island" – plus "One Finger Snap", "Olioqui Valley", and "The Egg". CD

Billy MartinStrawberry Soul ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... About December 6, 2019
One of those lost funk classics that you'll never find in the original! Billy Martin leads a tight little instrumental combo – with a strong brassy finish, and lots of good wah wah guitar – through a set of originals and funky soul covers, all with a nice little groove, and kind of a super-fly approach to instrumentation. Titles include "Funky Feelin", "One More Time", "Egg Roll", "It's Your Life", "Moon Ride", "Stax", and "Watermelon Man". Tasty, warm, and with a nice southern funk groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Factory/Warner, Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 8LP ... $143.99 149.99
A massive package of work from the legendary Factory Records label – that important Manchester home to Joy Division, New Order, and a host of other important UK groups in the post-punk years – a company that got plenty of our pocket change when we were young! Factory was always a cut above the rest – a company that let its artists be freely creative and always adventurous – as they recorded music that went on to have a huge impact on the shape and sound of modern music on both sides of the Atlantic, with a legacy that lasted long after the label closed its doors in the early 90s. This huge 8LP set brings together lots of magic moments from Factory – not just hits, but some great underground gems – titles that include "Deaf" by Crispy Ambulance, "Watching The Hydroplanes" by Tunnelvision, "Time Goes By So Slow" by The Distractions, "Digital" by Joy Division, "Brighter" by Railway Children, "Tasty Fish" by The Other Two, "Kinky Afro" by Happy Mondays, "Compressor" by Biting Tongues, "All At Once" by Stockholm Monsters, "Trickery" by Kalima, "Yashar (John Robie mix)" by Cabaret Voltaire, "Talk About The Past" by The Wake, "Cool As Ice" by 52nd Street, "Taste What's Rhythm" by Swamp Children, "Art On 45" by Royal Family & The Poor, "Knife Slits Water (LP version)" by A Certain Ratio, "Temptation" by New Order, "Messidor" by Durutti Column, "Love Tempo" by Quando Quango, "It's Hard To Be An Egg" by John Dowie, "Dirty Disco" by Section 25, "Nightshift" by The Names, "English Black Boys" by X O Dus, "Shack Up" by A Certain Ratio, "Eletricity (Factory version)" by OMD, and "Dolphin's Spurt" by Minny Pops. Lance Ferguson has given us plenty of great work over the years – from his work in The Bamboos, to all his many other projects – yet as much as we've liked all of those, this one might actually be one of his best – a fantastic reworking of rare groove tracks from the 70s, all with a nicely changed-up sense of instrumentation! The set's mostly instrumental, and Lance takes on tracks originally recorded by James Mason, Pleasure, Funk Inc, and other names who are big heavyweights 'round these parts – served up with very strong instrumentation by a combo that includes members of The Bamboos, Hiatus Kaiyote, and The Putbacks. Titles include "Sweet Power Your Embrace", "Goodbye So Long", "Joyous", "Egg Roll", "Brazilian Rhyme", "Am I Wrong", "A Love I Believe In", "Noches De Viaje", "The Panther", and "Smokey Joe's La La". ✨✧ Ramsey Lewis TrioMore Sounds Of Christmas ... LP
Argo, 1964. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ramsey Lewis had such great success with his first album of Christmas instrumentals for Chess Records, he soon hopped back in the studio for a second record – but one with a very distinct difference! This time around, the trio's a bit unusual – in that it features regular bassist Eldee Young, but also the great Steve McCall on drums – a percussionist who'd later really flourish in the 70s, and gain great fame for his work in the group Air! The presence of McCall is no surprise, though – Malachi Favors and Muhal Richard Abrams also make appearances on early 60s Chess jazz albums – but it does give the record a nicely special sort of sound, as does the added instrumentation on some tracks too. About half the set features the trio, and the rest features a bigger group that's arranged by King Fleming and Will Jackson – jazz trio with a bit of strings, including some nice harp, and a touch of trombone from John Avant. Titles include "We Three Kings", "Snowfall", "Plum Puddin", "Little Drummer Boy", "Snowbound", "Egg Nog", and "Jingle Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousLondon American Label Year By Year – 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The sound of America in 1967 – but presented here with a very unusual focus – as all the tracks on the set were issued in the UK by the "American" branch of the London Records label! As such, the work is a very different portrait of US music at the time than you'd hear on a collection from our side of the Atlantic – as London UK grabbed all these unusual, overlooked songs from a variety of labels big and small – and put them out in England for an audience with ears much more tuned towards hipper, more high-quality singles! The music is a mix of soul, rock, country, and other modes – often recorded a few years before the UK issue, but collected together here in a really fresh snapshot of music you might have thought you already knew pretty darn well. As always with Ace Records, the set list is great and the notes offer up a heck of a lot of detail on the music – 28 titles that include "Four Days Of Rain" by The Raggamuffins, "He Ain't Give You None" by Freddie Scott, "My Girl Josephine" by Jerry Jaye, "Humphrey Stomp" by Earl Harrison, "Can You Help Me" by The Knickerbockers, "When You're Gone" by Brenda & The Tabulations, "Billy The Kid" by Wilson Pickett & The Falcons, "The Little Black Egg" by The Nightcrawlers, "Eight Men Four Women" by OV Wright, "Huff Puff" by Mickey Dolenz, "Bob" by The Willis Brothers, "Big Boss Man" by Erma Franklin, "Three Hundred & Sixty Five Days" by Donald Height, "Boogaloo Down Broadway" by Fantastic Johnny C, "You're The Love" by The Sixpence, and "Snap Your Fingers" by Gail Wynters. Acme/Lion, 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early 70s space rock from Golem – epically paced, trippy, expertly done wigged out instrumental rock that was purportedly laid down by heavies from the soon-to-be legendary krautrock scene working pseudonymously after hours in the studio! The album's a bit of an enigma – a set that's become famous over the years for its quality, but shrouded in enough mystery that some have doubted its story – although overall, the music here feels like the best early 70s space rock on labels like Brain or Egg – with lots of layers of keyboards and guitars over building drums and basslines. Interestingly, the producer as credited as Genius P Orridge for Pyramid Records, strangely similar to another name, wouldn't ya say? Titles include "Orion Awakes", "Stellar Launch", "Godhead Dance", "Jupiter & Beyond", and "The Returning". CD

Yulesville is coolsville – especially when it comes in the form of a killer collection of rare Christmas singles from the folks at Bear Family! The package is awash in the kind of groovy, sometimes goofy Holiday singles that broke big in the early years of rock and soul – a nice antidote to the sort of sleepier work that usually graced the record racks in earlier years – and the kind of music that's perfect for sipping egg nog into the wee small hours of Christmas morning! There's plenty of gems here that we've never heard before, and plenty of other great nuggets too – titles that include "Rock & Roll Christmas" by Cordell Jackson, "Wishing Is For Fools" by The Melodeers, "Jingle Jangle" by The Penguins, "Jingle Rock" by Tommy Lee & The Orbits, "Big White Cadillac" by Little Joey Farr, "Xmas Bell Rock" by Barry & The Highlights, "Twisten Bells" by Santo & Johnny, "Sleigh Bell Rock" by Three Aces & A Joker, "Winter Wonderland" by Allen & The Flames, "The Cactus Christmas Tree" by The McGuire Sisters, "It's Christmas Everywhere" by Paul Anka, "All Winter Long" by Linda Laure, and "Christmas Kisses" by The Bookends & Ray Anthony. 33 tracks in all! ✨✧ Stanley TurrentineSpoiler ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Stanley Turrentine's no spoiler here – as his tenor sax soars out over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke Pearson – all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life! The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from the cover – a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic Joyride album, but a bit more open and free – thanks to the lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on baritone sax – plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates from the time – particularly those with Donald Byrd – the use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along. And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really a horn section in the conventional way – just a group of like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music! Titles include "La Fiesta", "The Magilla", "Sunny", "Maybe September", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", and "When The Sun Comes Out". LP, Vinyl record album

Two originally-unissued 60s soul tracks – back to back on a 45! "When The Boy That You Love" is a sweet stepper from Peggy Gaines – a track that has a nice slow swing in the groove, which sets up a bright sound that's perfect for Peggy's interpretation of the lyric – positive and upbeat, but with a nice current of sadness too! "Everybody Knows" is more of a slow burner, with some great vibes at the core – ringing out sparely next to the slower drums that set the pace for the tune. Peggy's vocals are great on both – and we're not sure why we haven't heard more from her over the years! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Terumasa HinoPart – Terumasa Hino Meets Reggie Workman (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Love/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
A fantastic collaboration between Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino and avant bassist Reggie Workman – one that might seem unusual if you only know Hino's later work, but which was part of a few key collaborations that Hino and Workman did together at the start of the 70s – part of a real spiritual awakening in the trumpeter's music! The tracks are long and very expressive – and the group is mostly Japanese – with Hino on trumpet, Workman on bass, Motohiko Hino on drums, Kiyoshi Sugimoto on guitar, Mideo Ichikawa on electric piano, Yuji Imamura on conga, and Takao Uematsu on bass clarinet and tenor – all working together in a spirit that's clearly caught the imagination of the post-Coltrane years, and which is completely different than the straighter hardbop that Hino was recording just a few years previously. Take the title here a bit ironically – as the music is this unusual Korean take on reggae rhythms – maybe more an inspiration from Kingston, filtered through a maturing K-Pop style of the time – although often with some of the qualities that came about when dubbier rhythms were influencing mainstream pop in the UK at the start of the 80s! Most instrumentation is electric, although the drums feel live – and lyrics are in Korean throughout – on titles that include "Reggae Party", "You Sting My Heart", "Today Is A Good Day", "Swallowtail", "Memories Don't Fade", and "Strange Feeling". ✨✧ Laid BackWhite Horse/Sunshine Reggae ... 12-inch
Sire, 1983. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $6.99
What can we say? Despite the stupid appearance of the band, "White Horse" was a classic breakdance/electro track that crossed over so big it had kids in Kansas running out to by parachute pants and squares of linoleum to play along with the kids in the Bronx. Despite that runaway hit fame, though, the cut's a compelling one – with that perfect mix of post-disco post-punk grooves, warm in just the right places, and coldly appealing in others. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Peggy LeeAll Aglow Again ... LP
Capitol, 1960. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A groovy collection of singles from Peggy Lee – all material from her early return to Capitol Records after a mid-50s stint at Decca – brought together in a full length album from 1960! The work here already shows a great change in Peggy's style – that tightening up and hipping up she did famously at Capitol during the 60s – reinventing her older jazz vocal style with some very cool and swinging touches. Arrangements are by Sid Feller, Jack Marshall, and Nelson Riddle – and titles include "Fever", "Where Do I Go From Here", "Whee Baby", "My Man", "You Deserve", "Hallelujah I Love Him So", "Louisville Lou", "I'm Looking Out The Window", and "Let's Call It A Day" – plus the original 1948 recording of "Manana", from Peggy's earlier Capitol years. Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A classic set of tracks from Peggy – featuring the sublime hit "Is That All There Is?", produced by Lieber & Stoller, and arranged and conducted by Randy Newman. Other arrangements are by the likes of Mike Melvoin, Mundell Lowe, George Tipton, and Bobby Bryant – all of whom conspire to give Peggy one of her hippest albums ever. Titles include "I'm A Woman", "Love Story", "Brother Love's Travelling Show", and "Don't Smoke In Bed". LP, Vinyl record album

Peggy LeeLatin Ala Lee! ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Very groovy work from Peggy – a set of tunes tone with a nice little Latin flair! The tunes themselves are all Broadway hits of the late 50s and early 60s, but they're redone wonderfully here – so that they often bear little resemblance to the originals. Jack Marshall handled the arrangements with a swinging and jazzy sound – really throwing in some tight syncopated rhythms to make the album crackle more than most of Peggy's other work from the time. Titles include "Hey There", "I Am In Love", "Heart", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Party's Over", "Dance Only With Me", and "I Enjoy Being A Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Peggy LeeMan I Love ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good ... $3.99
Quite a rare album from Peggy Lee – and a strange one too! The album features backings "conducted" by Frank Sinatra, done in a moody, flowing, dreamy and sad style – similar to his own work of the late 50s Capitol years, especially the more melancholy albums that we love so much. Frank's probably not doing the bulk of the work, though, as the record also credits Nelson Riddle with arrangements – and Riddle's sound here is very strong, again in the mood of his best sad work with Sinatra – territory explored on albums like Wee Small Hours or Only The Lonely. Titles include "That's All", "Please Be Kind", "He's My Guy", "Then I'll Be Tired Of You", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", and "If I Should Lose You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono turquoise label pressing. Cover has a half split top seam and split spine.)

Peggy LeeMirrors ... LP
A&M, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
An incredible album from Peggy Lee – baroquely beautiful, in a way that builds massively off of her "Is That All There Is Period" – and take her into territory that's almost equal to Lotte Lenya! The whole album was written by the team of Lieber & Stoller, in a sad, boozy, faded style that's quite different than any of their earlier pop hits – and arrangements by Johnny Mandel and Perry Botkin are handled in a style that goes more for the emotive depths than the poppy hooks – really allowing Peggy to sing in a mature style that really befits her voice at the time. The record's incredibly dark – and is the kind that probably killed her career at the time, but which now stands above most other other records of the 60s and 70s. Titles include "Some Cats Know", "Ready To Begin Again", "A Little White Ship", "Tango", "Say It", and "I Remember". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peggy LeeNatural Woman ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A key album in the transformation of Peggy Lee's sound at the end of the 60s – one that has her moving from just being a jazz singer, into a more complicated role of interpreting contemporary singer/songwriter material – often with a mature and experienced tone, one that makes her versions often come across better than the originals! The album's got some hip arrangements from Mike Melvoin and Bobby Bryant – both of whom situate Peggy nicely – with enough youth in the backings to make the tunes come off well, but never too much to make them sound hokey. Titles include versions of "Everyday People", "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today", "Lean On Me", and "Natural Woman" – plus Peggy's massive versions of "Dock Of The Bay" and "Spinning Wheel", taken here with a great drum-n-organ break on the intro! Peggy LeeOle Ala Lee – Great Favorites Styled In Spectacular Latin Fashion ... LP
Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of Peggy Lee's excellent Latin-tinged sides for Capitol Records – and an album that gives her already-great style of jazz vocals a nice added bounce in the backings! Arrangements are by Joe Harnell – not the most authentic of Latin talents, but an artist who's well-suited to fitting Peggy's pop jazz style of the 60s with some playfully rhythmic arrangements. Titles include "Come Dance With Me", "By Myself", "Fantastic", "Together Wherever We Go", "I Can't Resist You", and "Ole". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A surprisingly strong mix of 70s modes happening here – as the funky flute of Herbie Mann takes on some of the nascent reggae grooves of the time – with results that are a lot nicer than you might expect! There's some core rhythms on the record from Tommy McCook, but Herbie's regular keyboardist Pat Rebillot also adds in some surprisingly nice lines too – making the whole thing way more than just another session cut down in Kingston. One real surprise is a very extended take on "My Girl", which runs for over 18 minutes and takes up all of side two – and other cuts include "Rivers Of Babylon", "Swinging Shepherd Blues", and "Ob La Di". Yan Tregger gave the world some funky sound library work in the 70s – but here, he's in much darker territory – definitely in the land of no return, which he explores with waves of really moody electronics! The tunes are still rhythmic – as with Yan's previous work – but also have all these dark corners, spooky echoes, and fuzzy electronics all around the edges – maybe in a way that's similar to the Jazz Funk Greats sound of Throbbing Gristle, but with no vocals at all – and more focused too. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99 34.98
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. Titles include "I'm Every Woman" by Latisha, "In The Rain" by rRnest Ranglin, "Reggae Beat Goes On" by Family Choice, "Ring My Bell" by Blood Sisters, "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" by Derrick Laro & Trinity, "Do It Nice & Easy" by Chariot Riders, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Upside Down" by Carol Cool, "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Sharon Forrester, "Rappers Delight" by Xanadu & Sweet Lady, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by Risco Connection, "Am I The Same Girl" by Charmaine Burnette, and "Be Thankful For What You Got" by One Blood. Columbia, Mid 70s-Early 80s. Used ... $1.99
An odd compilation pulled together by Columbia in the 80s, not because the assortment of tracks is especially out of place or without continuity, but because the set seems mostly to be pulled together to capitalize on reggae's popularity, though it was assembled well after most major labels had given up on cashing in with Jamaican music. Though some material is listed as previously unreleased like Aswad's "Drum & Bass Line" and "African Children", though those tracks were available at the time, but the compilation does have a unique Francois Kevorkian remix of Jimmy Cliff's "Treat The Youths Right", and more than a handful of other nice numbers. 9 tracks in all, the set also includes "One Love" and "Simmer Down" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "legalize It" and "Stepping Razor" by Peter Tosh, "Blood Stain" by Yellowman and Sister Nancy and "Try Jah Love" by Third World. Soulful sounds from the legendary Studio One – music from a time when the Jamaican scene was taking some strong cues from the American soul scene of the 60s, but coming up with a unique groove of their own! As proof of that fact, some of the work here is based on original American soul tunes – but takes off in a very different way, especially in the rhythms – which follow on the earlier Jamaican modes in blue beat and ska, and created these gently grooving sounds which then allow for very different vocal styles too! Studio One really came into its own during these years – creating new soul stars in Jamaica through work like this – music that was a key precursor to the reggae explosion to come, but which is more than fantastic alone by itself. Titles include "Giddy Up" by The Actions, "Sitting In The Park" by Hortense Ellis, "Never Let Go" by Carlton & The Shoes, "Rub Up Push Up" by The Termites, "Give Me A Little Sign" by Owen Gray, "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" by Alton & Hortense Ellis, "Strange Things" by John Holt, "Change Your Style" by The Paragons, "Trying Times" by Jerry Jones, "I Shall Be Released" by the Heptones, "Riding For A Fall" by Delroy Wilson, "Bad Treatment" by Cannon & The Soul Vendors, and "It Makes Me Feel" by Larry Marshall. ✨✧ Gregg AllmanLaid Back ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Dynamic Sounds (Jamaica), 1975. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lee, ever the entrepreneur, looks to capitalize on the huge stateside disco trend with this album, though there's little disco here, and mostly workman like reggae, that's not particularly outstanding. The sole disco effort is a take on "The Hustle", and the rest of set includes "Rockers", "Reggae Stomp", "No Woman No Cry" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peggy LeeChristmas Carousel ... LP
Capitol, 1960. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little Holiday album from Peggy Lee – one of those rare efforts that's a lot more than just a quickie batch of Christmas tunes cut in the studio on a hot July afternoon! Instead, Peggy's working here with Billy May to craft an album of surprising poise and presence – deeper than most of her jauntier Capitol recordings of the time, and featuring a well-chosen batch of tunes that even includes a few originals written by Peggy! A few tunes have a children's chorus that we could do without, but others are much more mature – and titles include "The Christmas List", "Christmas Carousel", "Deck The Halls", "The Tree", "The Christmas Riddle", "Don't Forget To Feed The Reindeer", and a great version of "The Christmas Waltz". One of the greatest albums ever from The Rolling Stones – a set that still draws on all the bluesy roots of their best 60s material, yet which also shows a sharper, nastier edge as well! The album shows the tremendous sense of focus and power the Stones had in this crucial late 60s stretch – a bold step forward that would give them some of their most memorable moments ever, launched by this sublime set of tracks that includes "Sympathy For The Devil", "Street Fighting Man", "Dear Doctor", "Parachute Woman", "Prodigal Son", "Factory Girl", and "Stray Cat Blues". ✨✧ Yan TreggerDucks & Drakes ... LP
Musical Touch Sound (UK), 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An underground funky gem – one that never made it past the collections of the elite sound library audience in the 70s – but which is well deserving of global acclaim! Yan Tregger works here in this style that's every bit as funky as his contemporaries on bigger library labels, but which also shows a strong love of club music too – not straight disco, at least not in any sort of "easy" way – but a real ear for just the right sort of basslines, keyboard parts, and uptempo rhythms to keep things moving throughout! Given the all-instrumental approach, think of this set as a jazzy take on clubby grooves – or maybe an instrumental funk record for the clubs – with great cuts that include "The Girl In The Gold", "Dawn & Darkness", "Friend Island", "The Last Girl", "Haunting Refrain", "Girls Will Be Girls", and "The Way Of All Flesh". Trojan (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic female side of Trojan Records – the legendary reggae label that formed a key bridge between Kingston and London back in the day – and helped introduce generations to the changing styles of Jamaican music in the 60s and 70s! Trojan's maybe best known for some of its big male artists, but this special set focuses on the equally strong female talent in the roster – sometimes singers who only got a chance to cut a single or two for Trojan, or who maybe found greater fame in later years – all brought together here in a double-length collection of classics and rarities. Titles include "Girlie Girlie" by Sophia George, "I Shall Sing" by Judy Mowatt, "Uptown Top Ranking" by Althea & Donna, "Hurt So Good" by Susan Cadogan, "I Let You Go Boy" by Dawn Penn, "Dynamic" by Paula Clarke, "My Willow Tree" by Hortense Ellis, "Honey Hush" by Millie Small, "Barbwire" by Nora Dean, "Lovin You" by Janet Kay & The Kaylets, "Back In My Arms Again" by Doreen Shaffer, "Give & You Get" by Marcia Griffiths, "Love Was All I Had" by Phyillis Dillon, "I'm Still In Love With You" by Marcia Aitken, and "Back Wey" by Faye Bennett. ✨✧ Gregory Isaacs/Ossie All StarsMr Isaacs (2CD deluxe edition – Leggo Dub plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Earthquake/17 North Parade, 1977. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". CD2 features the full album Leggo Dub – related dub material by the Ossie All-Stars – The Revolutionaries working with Ossie Hibbert on some wicked instrumentals that have plenty of core rhythms that never stray too far, while Hibbert makes magic with echo and other slight studio techniques! Titles include "Dubby Dubby", "Winners Dub", "Dub Down Babylon", "Ghetto Dub", "Brooklyn Style, "Leggo Dub", and "Doberman Skank". CD2 also features bonus tracks – "Jump & Pawn" by Clint Eastwood, "CB 200" by Dillinger, "War Of The Stars" by Ossie & The Revolutionaries, "Take A Dip" by Dillinger, and "Lik Her She Gone" by Big Joe. ✨✧ Real ShooBeeDoo (Reggie Fields)Reminiscing (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Wenha/Tidal Waves, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An obscure set from the Detroit scene of the early 80s – a jazz record, but one with a nice current of soul – thanks to work on both bass and vocals from Reginald "ShooBeeDoo" Fields! Wendell Harrison recorded the record, and also plays tenor on the record – but the set's very different than most of his music, both of the 70s and 80s – because Fields has an offbeat style that's very much his own, and which really seems to tie the rest of the musicians on the record to his sharp energy on the bass! That instrument is used in both acoustic and electric modes – and things sometimes get loose, open, and slightly free – then balanced out with straighter, more soulful passages. In addition to tenor from Harrison, the set also features Billy McCoy on electric piano, Tani Tabal on tablas and drums, and Allen Barns on additional tenor. Pamela Wise sings on "Ancient Egyptian Rhythms" – and other titles include "The Wagon Walk", "The Morning Sun", "Reminiscing", and "Shoo Will Be Back In Due Time". LP, Vinyl record album
