Animated EggAnimated Egg ... CD
Somerset/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
Freaky fuzzy guitars from the great Jerry Cole – working here under the name of The Animated Egg – not a real group, but a one-off studio project – yet one that is filled with plenty of great guitar, and some surprising rock funk grooves! The music is much trippier than Jerry's famous surf work – more fuzz on the amps, and a romping sort of rhythm that often takes these tunes right into Cherrystones funky rock territory, which is always treat for ears like ours – and the music veers between hard 60s instrumentals and modder Now Sound territory – thanks to some burning organ alongside the tight guitar and drums! Titles include "Sock It My Way", "Sippin & Trippin", "Dark", "Down Down & Gone", "Tomorrow", "Sur Listic", "I Said She Said Ah Cid", and "A Love Built On Sand". CD

Flied EggGood Bye Flied Egg (180 gram pressing) (2020 Japan Record Day Release) ... LP
Vertigo/Universal (Japan), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $54.99
Hard to say goodbye to a group this good – one of the heaviest combos working the Japanese scene in the early 70s – graded with guitar work from Shigeru Narumo that we'd put right up next to any of the best British or American players of the time! Shigeru clearly gets his inspiration from blues, but turns his music into hard rock overall – especially when the vocals come into the mix, and the whole thing is driven by the intense drums of Hiro Tsunoda and heavy bass of Masayoshi Takanaka! The album packs as heavy a punch as any English work issued on Vertigo at the same time – and titles include "Out To The Sea", "Goodbye To My Friends", "521 Seconds Schizophrenic Symphony", "Before You Descend", "Five More Pennies", and "Rolling Down The Broadway". Tim BlakeCrystal Machine (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Egg/Esoteric (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
Fantastic sounds from Tim Blake – an artist who previously worked with Gong, and sometimes worked with Hawkwind – but who really came into his own on this legendary album of electronics! Tim works here on a self-constructed "crystal machine" – a bank of electronics that was often played in performance to front some trippy film installations (as shown on the cover) – which perfectly suited the stretched-out spacey style of his music! The vibe is maybe a bit like early Tangerine Dream, but with some of the warmer modes of the French electronic scene of the time – and titles include "Midnight", "Last Ride Of The Boogie Child", "Synthese Intemporel", and "Crystal Presence". CD features bonus tracks – "Surf" and "Synthese Intemporel (parts 1 & 2)". CD

✨✧ Johnny CashJohnny Cash At Folsom Prison ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Very Good ... $39.99
One of the greatest live albums ever, and probably THE best album Johnny Cash ever recorded! In 1969 Cash had more angst than you could shake a stick at – he just kicked drugs, and he hadn't had a big hit in years, so his respectful and thoughtful empathy for the audience of inmates not only cemented his persona as the real deal, but carries an air of dizzying emotion throughout the set. Appropriately filled with his darkest tunes, Folsom is one of the few cases in which a live recording of a hitmakers catalog is stronger and more vital than the studio versions. Includes "Folsom Prison Blues", "Dark As A Dungeon", "Cocaine Blues", "25 Minutes To Go", "Orange Blossom Special", "The Long Black Veil", "Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog", plus "Jackson" and "Give My Love To Rose" featuring June Carter. LP, Vinyl record album

FunkadelicToys ... LP
Westbound/Ace (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $23.99 28.98
A legendary record – and one that's well worth all the anticipation it's gotten over the years! The set features rare, previously unreleased material done by Funkadelic during their classic years at Westbound Records – some songs, and some studio jams – of the sort the group were famous for, especially during their time at Westbound! The songs are totally great – massively funky numbers that rank right up there with classics of the Cosmic Slop years – and the jams are almost even better, a rare opportunity to hear the genius collective at work in the studio – without any edits at all to get in the way! We'd easily rank this set right up there with Free Your Ass or America Eats Its Young – and after years of waiting, it's great to have this wonderful collection finally out for the masses! Songs include "Heart Trouble", "Talk About Jesus", and "The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg" – and jams include "Vampy Funky Bernie" and "Slide On In". LP, Vinyl record album

SF Jazz, 2005. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99 35.00
The music of John Coltrane, mixed with originals from the SF Jazz Collective – a perfect combination, considering that the lineup is so hip, it features heavyweights like Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Joshua Redman on tenor, Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Miguel Zenon on alto, and Renee Rosnes on piano! Isaac Smith is the trombonist this time around – and rhythm is rock-solid, thanks to the work of Eric Harland on drums and Matt Penman on bass – the last of whom might well be a secret hero of the group! The first half of the set features takes on the Coltrane tunes "Crescent", "Naima", "Africa", "Moment's Notice", "26 2", and "Love/Dear Lord" – followed by originals that include "Psalm For Peggy", "Love Is Enough", "Scrambled Egg", and "Development". Stanley TurrentineSpoiler ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 About October 20, 2021
Stanley Turrentine's no spoiler here – as his tenor sax soars out over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke Pearson – all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life! The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from the cover – a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic Joyride album, but a bit more open and free – thanks to the lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on baritone sax – plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates from the time – particularly those with Donald Byrd – the use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along. And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really a horn section in the conventional way – just a group of like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music! Titles include "La Fiesta", "The Magilla", "Sunny", "Maybe September", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", and "When The Sun Comes Out". CD

VariousPeace Chant Vol 4 – Raw, Deep, & Spiritual Jazz (with download) ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A fantastic collection, and one that goes deep deep into the farther reaches of the spiritual scene in the 70s – tracks that are way more obscure than music on labels like Strata East or Impulse, and which really show an evolution of music ideas at the time! The core style is jazz, but there are also other elements at play too – and the tracks are a mix of instrumentals and vocals, the latter of which have an especially wonderful quality! Some of the tunes are nicely gentle, almost quiet in spirit – while others have a bolder, more political approach – and the mix of tunes throughout is very fresh, and maybe even better than the first collection in this series. Titles on vinyl volume 4 include "Untitled No 1" by Bohannon Trio, "Bo Ghana" by Lonnell Dantzler, "Ghana Cha" by Donn Preston Group, "Quernemoen" by Wayne Powell Octet, "Egg Nog" by Tommy Jones, "Attitude" by Organic Pulse Ensemble, "Brass Winds" by The Niambi Big Band, "Freedom" by Brother Yu Sextet, and "Ser Vi Tude" by James Scales & All Stars. VariousSpring Fever – 28 Easter Nuggets For Your Spring Season ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A whole host of tunes that will help you say goodbye to winter and hello to spring – a light and lively mix of postwar cuts in a variety of styles – from early rockers, to instrumentals, radio pop gems, and even a bit of R&B – all put together with a very playful vibe! The set's similar to the other "season" titles from Bear Family – showing how similar themes move through American music in different ways – almost like you're tuning into some old AM station in the month of May, discovering a whole host of tunes you might never have heard otherwise! Oddly, there's also a theme of chickens and eggs running through the set – which features 28 titles that include "Chicken Rock" by Fat Daddy Holmes, "Spring Fever" by Vilas Craig & The Kollege Kings, "One Fried Egg" by The Charioteers, "Rock Chicken Rock" by Ray Coleman & His Skyrockets, "Jungle Bunny" by The Fabulous Pearls, "The Rooster" by Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm, "Chicken Reel" by les Paul, "Easter Day" by The Dixon Brothers, "April Love" by Shirley Jones & Pat Boone, "Egghead" by Al Allen, "Spring Fever" by The Velvets, "End Of Spring" by Les Baxter, and "It Might As Well Be Spring" by Jerry Duane with the Monarchs. Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 4CD ... Just Sold Out!
A groundbreaking set of music from the start of the 70s – work by a variety of British groups who rose up from the underground and changed music forever – some who'd later fly to superstardom in the 70s, and many more who'd just remain the province of hipper listeners for decades to come! The music here is in a variety of modes – late psych, early prog, hard rock, and even experimental folk – the crowning jewels of important labels like Vertigo, Harvest, and Decca – brought together here with a really wonderful choice of cuts, and very detailed notes that helps really put all the many artists and sounds in perspective! If you think you know this moment from the classic rock records in your collection, then guess again – as you'll have plenty here to rework your ideas of 1970, in a set list of 57 tracks, with work from Gentle Giant, Blodwyn Pig, Lindisfarne, Hawkwind, Atomic Rooster, Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Egg, Patto, T2, Kevin Ayers, Rare Bird, Stray, Family, Wishbone Ash, Yes, Quatermass, East Of Eden, Pete Brown & Piblokto, McDonald & Giles, Cressida, Love Sculpture, Affinity, Curved Air, Michael Chapman, and many others. ✨✧ Constant SoundConstant Sound ... LP
Lysergic Sound, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those super-rare albums that never went beyond the stage of being a demo, yet which has gone on to be the stuff of legend over the years – maybe in part because it was later discovered to be an obscure side project by the legendary Wrecking Crew of LA 60s studio fame! The approach here is sunshine pop at its best – mixed male/female vocals, working with really well-crafted backings that were all arranged by Allyn Ferguson, who also penned all of the tracks! The vibe is maybe somewhere between Free Design and the Alan Copeland Singers – and the set is every bit as groovy as our favorites from both groups. Titles include "Playtime", "Calico Bus", "Time", "Come Out In The Sun", "Ride A Pink Horse", and "Candy Egg". LP, Vinyl record album

Acme (UK), Mid 90s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic-styled space rock from Golem – epically paced, trippy, expertly done wigged out instrumental rock that was purportedly laid down by heavies from the soon-to-be legendary krautrock scene working pseudonymously after hours in the studio! The album's a bit of an enigma – a set that's become famous over the years for its quality, but shrouded in enough mystery that some have doubted its story – although overall, the music here feels like the best early 70s space rock on labels like Brain or Egg – with lots of layers of keyboards and guitars over building drums and basslines. Produced by Genius P Orridge – and titles include "Orion Awakes", "Stellar Launch", "Godhead Dance", "Jupiter & Beyond", and "The Returning". LP, Vinyl record album

Grand Royal, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Think the Beastie Boys went straight into hip hop? No – back at the start, they were three guys with plenty of energy who dabbled in a number of modes that were brewing big in the New York scene of their youth – including punk rock and reggae, both of which are featured here along with early hip hop experiments! The set begins with their searing "Egg Raid On Mojo" – the moves through "Beastie Boys", "Transit Cop", "Jimi", "Holy Snappers, "Riot Fight", "Beastie Rvolution", and "Michelle's Farm". But maybe best of all, the album includes the incredible Cooky Puss EP – which features the original "Cooky Puss" song that has the group calling up Carvel Ice Cream, and harassing the staff by asking to talk to an ice cream cake! ✨✧ Herbie HancockEmpyrean Isles (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A lyrical masterpiece from the young Herbie Hancock – and a record that's really special for so many different reasons! First, the songs are really long and open – even more so than some of Hancock's other work – with a quality that's balanced between his soul jazz roots, and some of the freer ideas he was exploring with key counterparts of the time! Next, the group features a quartet with Freddie Hubbard on cornet – an instrument he didn't play that often, but which creates a really special sound here – one that's cool and compressed, but still has a sharp bite, too – especially over the inventive rhythms laid down by Ron Carter on bass and Anthony Williams on drums. All players are capable of going out – and have strong "new thing" cred by this point – but they keep it inside all the way through, but with a balanced sense of darkness that's really beautiful. The album features Hancock's classic (and oft-sampled) version of "Cantaloupe Island" – plus "One Finger Snap", "Olioqui Valley", and "The Egg". LP, Vinyl record album

MPS (Germany), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Funky vibes, electric sitar, and a madly tripped-out album – one of the best of the MPS psychedelic jazz sessions from the end of the 60s! Back in the US, Dave Pike was always a pretty straight vibist – but he's working here with his European combo that included the legendary Volker Kriegel – who plays both electric guitar and sitar on the record, giving it a really groovy "Eastern" sort of vibe! Drummer Peter Baumeister kicks the bottom of the set mightily – rolling in a modal groove one minute, picking up a heavier funk approach the next – and always inspiring the rest of the group to stretch out in the grooviest way possible. Tracks are shortish, but filled with great sonic touches – and titles include the legendary "Mathar", a well known bit of sitar funk – plus the tracks "Mother People", "I'm On My Way", "Regards From Freddie Horowitz", and "Walkin' Down The Highway In A Red Raw Egg". Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Over the decade, Beggar & Co have kept going strong – with a fantastic blend of soul, jazz, and funk – led here by trumpeter Kenny Wellington, who also handles lead vocals on a number of tracks – in a strong lineup that also features saxes and flute from David Baptiste, vibes from Orphy Robinson, and keyboards from Camelle Hinds! As the title implies, most tracks are variations on other recent material – and titles include "Time", "Somebody Help Me Out (boogie back extended)", "Yesterday's Gone (inst)", and 2021 remasters of "Open Sesame", "Sleeping Giants", "Say What's On Your Mind", "Goin To See My Baby", and "While The City Sleeps". The set begins with the stunning Greatest Reggae Hits – a set that focuses strongly on the amazing vocal range of Derrick Harriott – a singer who can match the falsetto highs of some of the best American soul singers of the time, which comes off especially well here on the tunes that come from US sources, but get a very hip reggae remake! Harriott was one of the greatest voices in Jamaican music at the time, but we might also say that he was one of the best soul singers too – as you'll hear on titles that include "Go Away Dream", "Look Over Your Shoulder", "Brown Baby", "Bucketful Of Tears", "Let Me Down Easy", and "Being In Love". Reggae Disco Rockers is a set that has Derrick Harriott continuing to give the 70s American soul scene a run for its money – with tracks that are a mix of covers and more obscure material – done in a style that's a lot less disco than you'd guess from the title! Most tunes have an easygoing groove that's inherited from rocksteady, but a vibe that's more 70s sweet soul overall – as Harriott takes on "Eighteen With A Bullet", "Love Is Just Around The Corner", "Castles In The Air", "Reggae Train", "Wish On A Star", "All Day Music", and even a surprisingly nice version of "Fly Robin Fly". 2CD set also features Greatest Hits Dubwise – 11 dub tracks of tunes from the core album – plus the titles "Eighteen With A Bullet (version)", "Have You Seen Her", "Lollipop Girl", "Don't Rock The Boat", "Day By Day", "Medley In Five Parts (part 1 & 2)", "Close To Me", and "Over The River". InspirationsReggae Fever (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
The Inspirations were maybe not the biggest vocal group on the Jamaican scene at the start of the 70s – but man, they really tear things up in a wonderful way on this classic set with production by Joe Gibbs! As with other Gibbs' projects, there's a few numbers here by other artists too – but the main focus is the sublime vocal tunes that have the Inspirations in the lead – singing in a duo mode that's clearly inspired by 60s soul acts from the US, but with the vocals more harmonized together, instead of trading back and forth – yet at a level that still makes for a really raw edge overall! Rhythms are fantastic – nicely bubbling in a rocksteady mode – and Inspirations titles include "Wet Dreams", "Ease Up", "Samfie Man", "Why Do You Laugh At My Calamities", "Bongo Nyah", "Who You Gonna Run To", "Sweet Sensation", and "Fattie Fattie". Other tracks on the album include "Only Yesterday" by Ken Parker, plus the tracks "Liquidator", "Reggae Fever", and "Mad Rooster" by Lloyd Willis & The Destroyers. PLUS, this 2CD set features a huge amount of added material – 43 more tracks that are all contemporaneous Joe Gibbs productions – work by The Reggae Boys, Destroyers, Soul Sisters, Johnny Moore & The Supersonics, Soul Mates, Hippy Boys, Stranger Cole, Niney, Ken Parker, Ernest Williams, Ansel Collins, and even more by The Inspirations. ✨✧ Bunny LeeFull Up – Early Reggae Productions 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
Mindblowing sounds from the great Bunny Lee – and exactly the kind of collection that makes us love the Pressure Sounds label so much! The track selection is wonderful – and most numbers are balanced in a unique space between reggae and rocksteady, and often have some crucial influences from American soul and funk as well – but they come across with a mode that's very different from more standard reggae, especially the style of the music that would be more codified a few years later. Instead, there's a really rich sense of experimentation here – as Bunny Lee and his All Stars work on instrumental tracks, or alongside other key artists like Delroy Wilson, Rico Rodriguez, Tommy McCook, U Roy, or Winston Williams. Some tunes have amazingly trippy touches – and a few points even mix in some wild moog too – and titles include "Double Attack", "Ivan Itler The Conqueror", "Scarface", "Joe Lewis", "War", "Wet Vision", "When I Get My Freedom", "Smooth & Sorts", and "Death Rides A Horse". Peggy LeeBlack Coffee And Other Delights – Decca Anthology (2CD set) ... CD
Decca, Mid 50s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
Brilliant work by Peggy Lee – very different than most of her later more pop-oriented recordings! Peggy signed to Decca as a solo act right after working with bigger bands in the 40s, and her recordings for the label are wonderful – featuring many ballads and torchy numbers, recorded in small-combo fashion, in a style that's similar to some of Chris Connor's later Bethlehem work, plus some larger arrangements that push her even further, and which move into a wealth of interesting styles that show her to be an incredibly talented vocalist. The package features a total of 46 tracks in all – and tracks include "Black Coffee", "Lover", "You Go To My Head", "Let Me Go Lover", "Joey Joey Joey", "My Old Flame", "Street Of Dreams", "Where Flamingos Fly", "Johnny Guitar", "Sisters", "Bouquet Of Blues", "Love Letters", and "Sans Souci". Barrington LevySweet Reggae Music 1979 to 1984 ... LP
17 North Parade, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99 23.98
A brilliant tribute to the youthful talents of Barrington Levy – a set of sweetly soulful numbers that were mostly recorded when Levy was in his late teens! The package is overstuffed with goodness from these key Levy years – music that often moves through the groove with a really laidback vocal, yet still has this sharp bite underneath – that special mix that always made Barrington so great. And although young here, there's still a depth to his vocals that few other older acts can touch – a heartfelt, sometimes heartbreaking quality that really comes through. 10 tracks on the vinyl version. Titles include "21 Girls Salute", "Whom Shall I Be Afraid Of", "Mini Bus", "Here I Come", "Pon Your Toe", "Mini Bus", "Hammer" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie MannReggae ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1974. Used ... $19.99
A surprisingly strong mix of 70s modes happening here – as the funky flute of Herbie Mann takes on some of the nascent reggae grooves of the time – with results that are a lot nicer than you might expect! There's some core rhythms on the record from Tommy McCook, but Herbie's regular keyboardist Pat Rebillot also adds in some surprisingly nice lines too – making the whole thing way more than just another session cut down in Kingston. One real surprise is a very extended take on "My Girl", which runs for over 18 minutes and takes up all of side two – and other cuts include "Rivers Of Babylon", "Swinging Shepherd Blues", and "Ob La Di". Herbie MannReggae II ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used ... $19.99
A lesser-known follow-up to Herbie Mann's first album of reggae-styled instrumental grooves – and one that's every bit as sweet as the first! Like that record, the approach here is one that has Mann working with Kingston-bred rhythms from a lineup that includes Winston Wright on organ, Jackie Jackson bass, and Michael Richard on drums – mixed with tenor from Tommy McCook and trumpet from Bobby Ellis – then given a slight fusion vibe from Mann's frequent 70s musical partner Pat Rebillot on a variety of keyboards! Herbie's flute snakes into the groove in this warm, easygoing way – very open in tone, and a surprisingly good fit for an instrument that isn't often used in such a setting. Titles include "Down On The Corner", "Cecilia", "I Know", "Stoned By You", "Bend Down Low", and "So Get It While You Can". CD

Dawn/7T's (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $32.99 40.99
The complete early works of Mungo Jerry – one of the most unique groups on the British scene in the early 70s! Mungo Jerry have a style that's strongly influenced by American roots – blues, folk, hillbilly, jug, and string band sounds – of the sort that you'd hear reworked in more contemporary rock modes by American acts like Canned Heat or Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – but served up here with a very different vibe! There's a weird compressed style of productions on many tracks, which really works perfectly with the vocals of Ray Dorset – almost creating a bridge from decades past of musical expression, and the glam era of the time at which the albums were released! Apart from a few hits on the radio over here, the full Mungo Jerry sound has never been explored – and this huge package features five full albums, along with bonus tracks, all packaged in these very cool LP-styled sleeves. Albums include the self-titled Mungo Jerry, Electronically Tested, You Don't Have To Be In The Army, Boot Power, and Long-Legged Woman – plus 22 more bonus tracks too. CD

An astounding collection that brings together work from a roots reggae legend! Niney's productions stand as some of the strongest benchmarks for golden era roots reggae, with his ability to fuse heavy rhythms with righteous messages and some of the better vocal performances that these singers would turn in for any producer. This great double LP set pulls together some of his biggest numbers as well as great versions, dubs, discomixes and a few hard to get alternate versions for a hefty showcase of one of the elite in Kingston's roster of master producers. Backing is by the Soul Syndicate, the Aggrovators, the Revolutionaries, the Cimarons and Steely & Clevie, with 28 tracks in all, including "Blood & Fire" by Niney, "Whole Lot Of Fire" by Big Youth, "Rascal Man" by Delroy Wilson, "Rasta No Born Yah (ext)" by Sang Hugh & The Lionaires, "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner/Clap The Barber" by Michael Rose, "I Need Your Loving" by Slim Smith, "Rock On" by Gregory Isaacs, "Silver Words" by Ken Boothe, "Warrior" by Johnny Clarke, "Chant It Down" by Freddie McGregor, "No More Will I Roam (ext)" by Dennis Brown, "Materialist" by Horace Andy, "Moses" by Jacob Miller, "Temptation, Botheration & Tribulation" by the Heptones, "Lover's Race" by Sugar Minott and "Thank You Mama" by Barry Brown. Japan's Reggae Disco Rockers have a really unique approach to the groove – a blend of dub and house rhythms, augmented by some nice jazzy touches and sweet female vocals – all of which makes for an instantly recognizable sound! This album's one of the few full length sets by the group, and it's a much deeper batch of tracks than some of their previous singles – quite soulful at the best moments, pulling together a range of influences that shouldn't sit so well next to each other, but which manage to work nicely in a unique Japanese-styled fusion approach! Reggae StringsReggae Strings/Reggae Strings Vol 2 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99 24.99
A great pair of records – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the debut Reggae Strings album – one of the most unique albums on the Trojan label during the 70s – and a surprising hit for the company too! The approach here is very unusual – as the cuts here all are earlier Trojan vocal singles that had larger backings provided by UK maestro Johnny Archey – then stripped of their vocals and presented as instrumentals! As you'd guess by the names, Archey adds strings to the Kingston rhythms – but the approach is surprisingly nice – almost like early reggae rhythms coming into play with the best of the UK sound library generation – with results that are as groovy as that description might imply. Titles include "World Without Love", "One Woman", "Let The Man Go", "Leaving Rome", "Pantomime", "God Bless The Children", and "Young Gifted & Black". Reggae Strings 2 is a set that follows nicely on the first Reggae Strings effort on Trojan – and, like the first, a package that features older vocal tracks with the lyrics stripped away, all to provide a focus on the fuller orchestrations of Johnny Archey! The approach is cooler than you'd guess – lots of nice charts that bring a bit of 70s smooth to the sound of Trojan – almost like Barry White was recording down in Kingston – on titles that include "How Many Times", "Jump Hallelujah", "Strange World", "It's Too Late", "Tell It Like It Is", "Scientist", "Jamaica Jerkoff", and "Sweet Bitter Love". 2CD set features 25 bonus tracks too – all the original vocal tunes used for the strings versions – with work by Bob Andy, The Dynamites, Greyhound, Bob & Marcia, Nicky Thomas, Danny Ray, Merlene Webber, The Uniques, Pioneers, Winston Groovy, and others! 51 tracks in all – and a nice set of notes. SSS International/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
Wonderful soul duet work from Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson – a pair who were maybe to the southern scene of the 60s what Marvin Gaye and his ladies were to the Motor City – able to trade lines in a wonderful way, and make their songs always come together with a vibe that was way more than just two singers working together in the studio! Peggy later went onto fame in the blues underground a few decades later – but here, her style is a sweet contrast to the bolder vocals of Jo Jo – as the pair move through modes that are groove at times, warmer at others – and all really well-done in the best SSS International mode of the Tennessee scene. This first album by the duo includes their lovely hit "Lover's Holiday", plus "Soul Shake", "We Got Our Bag", "We Were Made For Each Other", "Pickin Wild Mountain Berries", "Fine As Frog Hair", "Doin Our Thing", and "Blow Your Mind". CD has a huge amount of bonus tracks – 9 more numbers that include "Big City Blues", "Let's Spend A Day Out In The Country", "Neighbor Neighbor", "Too Deaf To Hear Too Blind To See", "Every Little Bit Hurts", and "Pure Love & Pleasure". VariousFoolish Fool/Herbsman Reggae (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of classic Clancy Eccles-produced compilations from the start of the 70s – issued here with plenty of bonus tracks too! Foolish Fool was initially billed to Cynthia Richards, the great singer who delivers the leadoff title tune – but the real start of the set is maybe Clancy Eccles, as the tracks here are all from the hand of the legendary producer – and really show the way that rocksteady was moving towards some of the tighter, sharper rhythms that would mark the early days of reggae! All the singers are as great as Richards – and titles include "Don't Look Back" and "Here Comes The Night" by Busty Brown, "Don't Mind Me" and "Mademoiselle" by Joe Higgs, "Foolish Fool" and "Conversation" by Cynthia Richards, "Feel The Rhythm" and "Africa" by Clancy Eccles, and "Revival" by The Dynamites. Herbsman Reggae is a set that more clearly foregrounds the work of Clancy Eccles in the lead – and one that also gives plenty of credit to the great Dynamites band on most of these tracks – a wicked quintet with Winston Wright on organ, Hucks Brown on guitar, and Gladdy Adams on piano! The rhythms are hard, the production is wonderful – all spacey and weird – and the record has this beautiful unified mix of vocals and instrumentals, a number with some cool pre-dub use of echo. Tracks include "Herbsman Shuffle" by King Stitt & Andy Capp, "Black Beret" and "Phantom" by The Dynamites, "Promise" by Cynthia Richards, "See Me (take 2)" by Earl George, "False Nyah" by Barry & The Affections, "The Ugly One" by King Stitt, and "Senor Judas" by Clancy Eccles & The Dynamites. This fantastic 2CD reissue also includes 34 bonus tracks – more Eccles productions of work by The Westmorlites, Barrington Sadler, The Dingle Brothers, Glen & Roy, Carlton Wedderburn, Carl Dawkins, and many others. 56 tracks in all! VariousReggae Power (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The first-ever full collection of work based around the production efforts of Karl JJ Johnson – maybe not the biggest name in Jamaican studio talent, but a producer with a great ear for the most soulful sounds bubbling up at the time! Johnson was known as Sir JJ – and worked most famously with The Ethiopians, but also handled a fair bit of other rocksteady and early reggae groups during the five years' worth of recordings brought together in this set – material issued on his own small label, and on Duke and Trojan as well – all collected here in a package that features 58 tracks in all, and a very copious amounts of notes and vintage images! 17 of the tracks have never been on CD at all – and together, the whole thing is a fantastic tribute to Johnson – with work by The Vibrators, Kingstonians, JJ All Stars, Cark Dawkins, Winston Wright, Roy Shirley, Val Bennett, Lloyd Young, The Linkers, The Ethiopians, Family Man, The Cambodians, Stranger & Gladdy, The Scorchers, Ansel Collins, Stranger Cole, and others. VariousRoots Rock Reggae (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Savannah/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A fantastic collection of roots reggae from a lesser-known source – material issued on the Big Phil label of Phil Mathias – brought together to make a superb album as a whole! There's a nice mix of artists here, and the production styles are also nicely varied – with some numbers that still have a roots vibe, but also move into warmer lovers territory – balanced with deeper, more progressive cuts that make the whole thing an all-killer, no-filler set! Titles include "A Lonely Walk" by Albert Malawi, "Consider Yourself" by Delroy Wilson, "Black Beauty" by The Mindbenders, "Riding High" by The In Crowd, "Never Get Weary" by Wellesley Braham, "Think About Tomorrow" by Ranking Joe, "Miserable Woman" by Leroy Smart, and "Once Upon A Time" by The Main Attractions. 2CD set also features 19 bonus tracks, 6 previously unissued, including some rare 12" singles – titles that include "Help Us Jah (12" mix)" by Leroy Brown, "Why Won't You Come On (12" mix)" by Bim Sherman, "So Many Times" by The Majestrians, "Too Sweet To Let Go (12" mix)" by The Studds, "Running (12" mix)" by Devon Lyon & Jah Thomas, "Road Traffic Law (12" mix)" by Jah Ruby, and "Wise Man" by Junior Dan. VariousStep Forward Youth – Roots Masters From The Punky Reggae Party ... LP
VP, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
A fantastic selection of tracks from a time when reggae and punk were really crossing over on the UK scene – the earliest years of the punk rock movement, when bands like The Clash, Slits, and others were bringing the sounds of Jamaica into much greater mainstream circulation! The cuts here aren't reggae punk – or punked-up reggae – but are instead the core tracks that influenced the late 70s UK generation – mostly roots reggae numbers from a few years before, whose politics and production really struck a chord with disenchanted youth in England! Don't worry about the package being too commercial, or too familiar – as the set list is a nicely deep dig, with all the right tracks – titles that include "Rebel" by Barry Ford Band, "The Barber Feel It" by Dr Alimantado & Jah Stitch, "Turn The Heater On" by Keith Hudson, "Pablo Meets Mr Bassie" by Agustus Pablo, "Jah Is I Guiding Star" by Tappa Zukie, "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" by Michael Rose, "Cool Out Son" by Junior Murvin, "Roast Fish & Cornbread" by Lee Perry, "Mr Cop" by Gregory Isaacs, "Two Sevens Clash" by Culture, and "Heavy Manners" by Prince Far-I. An astounding collection that brings together work from a roots reggae legend! ✨✧ TennorsDo The Reggay Dance ... LP
Sutro Park, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy helping of work from this excellent Jamaican trio – one of the best soulful groups of the rocksteady years, stepping out here in a mode that's similar to early material from The Wailers! The Tennors really shine here in a great blend of harmony vocals and tight Kingston rhythms – occasional currents of ska moving through early reggae modes – with top shelf studio backing to keep the groove. The set features 14 early scorchers – titles that include "Born To Be A Sufferer", "Sign Of The Times", "Do The Reggay Dance", "San Sebastian", "Tribute To Don Drummond", "Shame Face", "Deportation", and "I Am Just A Minstrel". Trojan/Grover (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A smoking slice of work from The Tennors – plus some great cuts by other "friends" on the Jamaican scene of the late 60s! The group really shine on their own singles, then step aside to let some other artists come in too – almost all with a similar mix of soul and rocksteady rhythms, and an especially key focus on the kind of growing vocal harmonies that were really helping change the face of Jamaican music at the time! Titles include "Reggae Girl", "Khaki", "The Stage", "Ride Your Donkey", "Gram Pa", "Cleopatra", and "Double Attack" by The Tennors – plus "Oh My Baby" and "Go Your Way" by The Harmonians, "Donkey Trot" by Clive's All Stars, "While I'm Walking" by Roman Stewart, "Parapinto" by Johnny More & Karl Bryan, "Copy Me Donkey" by Charlie Organire with Tommy McCook, "I'm Gonna Make It" by Cliff Smith, and "Puzzle" by Winston Wright. ✨✧ Toots & The MaytalsReggae Got Soul (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic moment from Frederick "Toots" Hibbert – a set that's maybe his equivalent to some of the key Island Records albums of the 70s from Bob Marley & The Wailers! Like those, the production here is top-shelf – handled partly by Joe Boyd, who brings a very respectful vibe to the set – and perhaps even goes for more of the soulful currents in Toots' vocals than before – at least in ways that might cross over more to American and British audiences than in the early days. Hibbert really seems to take to the spirit of the moment, and rises up with these beautifully expressive passages – of the sort that he may never have hit this well again! Titles include "Everybody Needs Lovin", "Living In The Ghetto", "So Bad", "Never You Change", "Rastaman", "Premature", and "Reggae Got Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousAll Aboard The CN Express – Rocksteady & Boss Reggae Sounds 1967/1968 ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), 1967/1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer early work from producer Clancy Eccles – a special set that focuses on rocksteady and early reggae productions – most compiled here for the first time ever! The work here is great – raw, soulful, and grooving in ways that move from midtempo to a slightly quicker pace – usually topped with a fantastic singer in the lead, and served up with instrumentation that's spare and right on the money – perfect for the sorts of hard-booming sound systems that were springing up to showcase singles like these! The work here was initially issued as 45s on labels that include New Beat and Doctor Bird, and most tracks on the set have been unavailable for decades – making them even more obscure than material on other Clancy Eccles collections. 26 tracks in all – with titles that include "Mother's Reply" by Lyn Taitt & The Jets, "You Were Meant For Me" by Lee Perry, "You Think I'm A Fool" by Hemsley Morris, "Easy Snappin" by Theo Beckford, "Western Organ" by The Clancy Set, "Bye Bye Love" by Alton Ellis, "Promises" by The Silverstars, "Heart Beat" by Ernest Ranglin, "No Good Girl" by The Mellotones, "Mother's Advice" by The Inspirations, "Please Stay" by Larry & Alvin, "I'll Hold You Tight" by Velma Jones, "Love Brother Love" by Hugh Malcolm, "Hey Mama" by Lee Perry, "Terrible Headache" by The Coolers, and "Let Us Be Lovers" by Velma & Clancy. ✨✧ VariousBest Of Reggae (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Forget the cheapo look of the cover, as the set's a classic batch of gems from the Trojan Records catalog – 2CDs worth of material, with 55 titles that go way past the obvious hits – served up in a great mix of rocksteady and early reggae modes, and filled with the kind of tunes that instantly bridged the space between Kingston and London at the end of the 60s! The package takes off from a mainstream Trojan set from back in the day, and offers the much deeper dig that we love from the Doctor Bird label – tunes that make the whole thing more of a journey of discovery than you might guess from the simple statement of the title. Tracks include "Build It Up" by Tito Simon, "Sweet Sensation" by The Melodians, "This Is Reggae Music" by Zap Pow, "Floating" by Greyhound, "Black Pearl" by Horace Faith, "Liquidator" by Harry J Allstars, "Elizabethan Reggae" by Boris Gardiner & The Love People, "I Need Your Sweet Inspiration" by The Pioneers, "Red Red Wine" by Tony Tribe, "Think About That" by Dandy Livingston, "Down In The Boondocks" by Delroy Williams, "Reggae From The Ghetto" by John Holt, "Yesterday Man" by Nicky Thomas, "Who's That Lady" by Paris Connection, and lots lots more! ✨✧ Beggars OperaAct One (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Vertigo/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A jammingly progressive set from Beggars Opera – a short-lived British group with plenty of great organ work from Alan Park! Beggars Opera are poised halfway between the tighter modes of the beat group years and the more stretched out sound of the classic rock supergroups – and the longish tracks here open up with heavier concepts and keyboard work that almost hints at ELP or Genesis, but still come across with some of the more personal, down-to-earth qualities of the progressive scene. Titles include "Memory", "Passacaglia", "Poet & Peasant", and "Light Cavalry". CD features two mono bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ Eggs Over EasyGood N Cheap ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's a lonely look to the cover of the record – even more desolate than Nighthawks At The Diner – but Eggs Over Easy have this warm sound that really makes you feel right at home, right away – maybe in part because the group get some nice help on production from Link Wray! The vibe's a bit like some of Link's own vocal work at the time – although the group are stronger singers, and have a great way of harmonizing with some roots elements in the best sort of way – not strictly delivering versions of the styles that influenced them, but using that great A&M sense of freedom to really craft something new! Titles include "Arkansas", "Home To You", "Song Is Born Of Riff & Tongue", "Don't Let Nobody", "Night Flight", and "Pistol On A Shelf". CD

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70JJD (Johnny Just Drop)/Unnecessary Begging (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1976/1977. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
2 stunners – back to back on one CD! "JJD (Johnny Just Drop)" is a great live track recorded in 1977 at Fela's own Kalakuta Republic – and it's a great number that begins casually, with Fela talking a bit, introducing the conga player, before the band goes wild on the cut, an extended groover in triple-time that's also an attack on the way that Africans abroad can lose a sense of their own cultural value. Unnecessary Begging may not be the most famous of Fela albums, but it's got some great bits! The track "Unnecessary Begging" takes up all of side one of the original LP, and it begins with this amazingly spooky sax solo that starts out spare, then snakes through the building rhythm lines laid down by Tony Allen. "No Burudei" is took up side two, and it's a pumped-up groover with fast guitar and bass, rolling along in a classic Africa 70 groove, while the rest of the band slowly joins into the fray! CD

Premiere/Dynamite Cuts (UK), 1974. New Copy 2 x 7 inch set (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
Four fantastic sound library gems from the 70s – all directed by Yan Tregger, and featuring some mighty sweet keyboards from the legendary Jacky Giordano! "Rieka" has this cool swirling sound next to the beats and wah wah guitar – unlike anything else we can think of – while "O'Seven" is tighter, more familiar keyboard-driven funk in the rhythm – but still with this totally great guitar part that gets all freaky and fuzzy! "Old Timmy" has a very groovy vibe – riffing guitar right along with the rhythms, peppered by drums – and "Gost" is harder, funkier, and has some cool clavi that really comes on strong! 7-inch, Vinyl record
