Flied EggGood Bye Flied Egg (180 gram pressing) (2020 Japan Record Day Release) ... LP
Vertigo/Universal (Japan), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $38.99
Hard to say goodbye to a group this good – one of the heaviest combos working the Japanese scene in the early 70s – graded with guitar work from Shigeru Narumo that we'd put right up next to any of the best British or American players of the time! Shigeru clearly gets his inspiration from blues, but turns his music into hard rock overall – especially when the vocals come into the mix, and the whole thing is driven by the intense drums of Hiro Tsunoda and heavy bass of Masayoshi Takanaka! The album packs as heavy a punch as any English work issued on Vertigo at the same time – and titles include "Out To The Sea", "Goodbye To My Friends", "521 Seconds Schizophrenic Symphony", "Before You Descend", "Five More Pennies", and "Rolling Down The Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stunning pressing – textured cover, heavy vinyl, and obi!)

✨✧ Animated EggAnimated Egg ... LP
Somerset, 1968. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Freaky fuzzy guitars from the great Jerry Cole – working here under the name of The Animated Egg – not a real group, but a one-off studio project – yet one that is filled with plenty of great guitar, and some surprising rock funk grooves! The music is much trippier than Jerry's famous surf work – more fuzz on the amps, and a romping sort of rhythm that often takes these tunes right into Cherrystones funky rock territory, which is always treat for ears like ours – and the music veers between hard 60s instrumentals and modder Now Sound territory – thanks to some burning organ alongside the tight guitar and drums! Titles include "Sock It My Way", "Sippin & Trippin", "Dark", "Down Down & Gone", "Tomorrow", "Sur Listic", "I Said She Said Ah Cid", and "A Love Built On Sand". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Alshire pressing! Cover is in nice shape. Vinyl has a small mark that plays with a light click during "A Love Built On Sand" and "Inside Looking Out" but plays fine otherwise.)

✨✧ Steve Lacy, Togashi Masahiko, Takahashi YujiEgg Farm Hall Festival ... CD
Crown (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the darkest work we've heard from soprano sax legend Steve Lacy – at least in this part of his career – some fierce work in the company of pianist Takahashi Yuji and percussionist Togashi Masahiko – who also get some time of their own on the record! The album features two long improvisations by the trio – and Lacy seems to pull more of an edge than usual in the company of both players, driven on strongly especially by Masahiko's percussion, which can be loud and stark. Yuji performs one piano solo with a slightly more introspective vibe – then also plays in duet alongside Masahiko, with this very earthy, organic combination of sounds. Great stuff throughout – and a fantastic reminder of the unique nexus of time/place/person that happens with the best improvised jazz! CD

Not The Beatles, but a group who are trying to cash in on their fame – by showing a monstrous Beatle wig on the cover of the album, covering a horde of dancers – and by playing a whole host of instrumentals with a nod to the Brit Invasion! We're guessing the Blue Beats were some American studio combo – as the overall project doesn't have a real UK sound – and they've definitely got their chops, especially on the guitar lines – which are recorded with a nice dose of echo and a good deal of twang, and mixed in with stomping rhythms and the occasional keyboard line. Titles include "The Chocolate Pudding Slop", "The Swingin Spiders' Bo Diddley", "The Fat Kings' Twist", "The Broken Egg Frug", "The Cold Mashed Potato", and "The Big Shoe Twist". CD

Dave Pike SetNoisy Silence-Gentle Noise (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
MPS (Japan), 1969. Used Gatefold ... $34.99
Funky vibes, electric sitar, and a madly tripped-out album – one of the best of the MPS psychedelic jazz sessions from the end of the 60s! Back in the US, Dave Pike was always a pretty straight vibist – but he's working here with his European combo that included the legendary Volker Kriegel – who plays both electric guitar and sitar on the record, giving it a really groovy "Eastern" sort of vibe! Drummer Peter Baumeister kicks the bottom of the set mightily – rolling in a modal groove one minute, picking up a heavier funk approach the next – and always inspiring the rest of the group to stretch out in the grooviest way possible. Tracks are shortish, but filled with great sonic touches – and titles include the legendary "Mathar", a well known bit of sitar funk – plus the tracks "Mother People", "I'm On My Way", "Regards From Freddie Horowitz", and "Walkin' Down The Highway In A Red Raw Egg". Stanley TurrentineSpoiler (non-RVG pressing) ... CD
Blue Note, 1966. Used ... $8.99
Stanley Turrentine's no spoiler here – as his tenor sax soars out over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke Pearson – all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life! The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from the cover – a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic Joyride album, but a bit more open and free – thanks to the lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on baritone sax – plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates from the time – particularly those with Donald Byrd – the use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along. And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really a horn section in the conventional way – just a group of like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music! Titles include "La Fiesta", "The Magilla", "Sunny", "Maybe September", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", and "When The Sun Comes Out". CD

Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
Don't think "Easter", think "groovy springtime" instead – as the tracks here are a great assortment of postwar numbers that conjure up the spirit of spring – some with bunny-themed lyrics, but others with a range of very cool styles! As with other Bear Family collections like this, the music is from a variety of sources – mostly 50s pop, rock, country, and vocal numbers – plus some instrumentals as well – served up in a playful way that really fits the spirit of the cover on the package! The set's overflowing with surprises throughout – and titles include "Suddenly It's Spring" by Chris Connor, "My Chocolate Rabbit" by Beverly Blunt, "Spring Fever" by Ernie Freeman, "Let's Do It" by Jimmy McCracklin, "Chicken Sax" by Rex & The Minors, "Chicken In The Basket" by Billy Bland, "Egbert The Easter Egg" by Betty Clooney & The Sandpipers, "Chicken Necks" by Don & Juan, "The Rooster" by Chuck Higgins, "Something To Do With Spring" by Noel Coward, "Spring Idyll" by Cedric Dumont, "Pickin The Chicken" by Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant, "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year" by Jeri Southern, "In The Spring Of The Year" by Joe Graydon with Four Hits & A Miss, and "Don't You Go Chicken" by Rudy Preston. Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A whole host of tunes that will help you say goodbye to winter and hello to spring – a light and lively mix of postwar cuts in a variety of styles – from early rockers, to instrumentals, radio pop gems, and even a bit of R&B – all put together with a very playful vibe! The set's similar to the other "season" titles from Bear Family – showing how similar themes move through American music in different ways – almost like you're tuning into some old AM station in the month of May, discovering a whole host of tunes you might never have heard otherwise! Oddly, there's also a theme of chickens and eggs running through the set – which features 28 titles that include "Chicken Rock" by Fat Daddy Holmes, "Spring Fever" by Vilas Craig & The Kollege Kings, "One Fried Egg" by The Charioteers, "Rock Chicken Rock" by Ray Coleman & His Skyrockets, "Jungle Bunny" by The Fabulous Pearls, "The Rooster" by Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm, "Chicken Reel" by les Paul, "Easter Day" by The Dixon Brothers, "April Love" by Shirley Jones & Pat Boone, "Egghead" by Al Allen, "Spring Fever" by The Velvets, "End Of Spring" by Les Baxter, and "It Might As Well Be Spring" by Jerry Duane with the Monarchs. ✨✧ Johnny CashJohnny Cash At Folsom Prison ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest live albums ever, and probably THE best album Johnny Cash ever recorded! In 1969 Cash had more angst than you could shake a stick at – he just kicked drugs, and he hadn't had a big hit in years, so his respectful and thoughtful empathy for the audience of inmates not only cemented his persona as the real deal, but carries an air of dizzying emotion throughout the set. Appropriately filled with his darkest tunes, Folsom is one of the few cases in which a live recording of a hitmakers catalog is stronger and more vital than the studio versions. Includes "Folsom Prison Blues", "Dark As A Dungeon", "Cocaine Blues", "25 Minutes To Go", "Orange Blossom Special", "The Long Black Veil", "Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog", plus "Jackson" and "Give My Love To Rose" featuring June Carter. ✨✧ Herbie HancockEmpyrean Isles (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lyrical masterpiece from the young Herbie Hancock – and a record that's really special for so many different reasons! First, the songs are really long and open – even more so than some of Hancock's other work – with a quality that's balanced between his soul jazz roots, and some of the freer ideas he was exploring with key counterparts of the time! Next, the group features a quartet with Freddie Hubbard on cornet – an instrument he didn't play that often, but which creates a really special sound here – one that's cool and compressed, but still has a sharp bite, too – especially over the inventive rhythms laid down by Ron Carter on bass and Anthony Williams on drums. All players are capable of going out – and have strong "new thing" cred by this point – but they keep it inside all the way through, but with a balanced sense of darkness that's really beautiful. The album features Hancock's classic (and oft-sampled) version of "Cantaloupe Island" – plus "One Finger Snap", "Olioqui Valley", and "The Egg". Also includes 2 CD bonus cuts! CD

A legendary record – and one that's well worth all the anticipation it's gotten over the years! The set features rare, previously unreleased material done by Funkadelic during their classic years at Westbound Records – some songs, and some studio jams – of the sort the group were famous for, especially during their time at Westbound! The songs are totally great – massively funky numbers that rank right up there with classics of the Cosmic Slop years – and the jams are almost even better, a rare opportunity to hear the genius collective at work in the studio – without any edits at all to get in the way! We'd easily rank this set right up there with Free Your Ass or America Eats Its Young – and after years of waiting, it's great to have this wonderful collection finally out for the masses! Songs include "Heart Trouble", "Talk About Jesus", and "The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg" – and jams include "Vampy Funky Bernie" and "Slide On In". LP, Vinyl record album

Tracks are all nice and long, and built with a wonderful vibe – served up by a lineup that includes Lamont King and Steve Murphy on saxes, Warren Oree on bass, Greg Jones on drums, and Ed Watkins on percussion – plus a bit of vocals from Sherry Butler. The cover looks a bit vintage, but the set features more contemporary tracks from this legendary UK soul group – the combo who gave birth to Incognito at the end of the 80s, and touched a fair bit of other acts as well! Over the decade, Beggar & Co have kept going strong – with a fantastic blend of soul, jazz, and funk – led here by trumpeter Kenny Wellington, who also handles lead vocals on a number of tracks – in a strong lineup that also features saxes and flute from David Baptiste, vibes from Orphy Robinson, and keyboards from Camelle Hinds! As the title implies, most tracks are variations on other recent material – and titles include "Time", "Somebody Help Me Out (boogie back extended)", "Yesterday's Gone (inst)", and 2021 remasters of "Open Sesame", "Sleeping Giants", "Say What's On Your Mind", "Goin To See My Baby", and "While The City Sleeps". Black & Blue/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $54.99 59.99
A spiritual soul jazz supergroup – featuring some of our favorite players of the Strata East 70s scene! This obscure recording was made in the mid 80s, but it's got the feel of the best 70s work by Harper, Fortune, and Cowell – a richly expressive session built around original compositions, and long modal playing in a Love Supreme tradition! The group's a quintet featuring Sonny Fortune on alto, Billy Harper on tenor, Stanley Cowell on piano, Billy Hart on drums, and Reggie Workman on bass – most of whom, minus Fortune, played together on a similar session (called Such Great Friends – not to be confused with this one!) a few years earlier. The feel of the album's like some of Harper's best from the 70s – very open, but never too free, with lots of stretching, yearning passages from the rhythm section – making for a perfect platform for the solos of Harper and Fortune. Titles include "Equipoise", "East Harlem Nostalgia", "Insight", "Awakening", and "Is It Not True Simply Because You Cannot Believe It". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bunny LeeFull Up – Early Reggae Productions 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Mindblowing sounds from the great Bunny Lee – and exactly the kind of collection that makes us love the Pressure Sounds label so much! The track selection is wonderful – and most numbers are balanced in a unique space between reggae and rocksteady, and often have some crucial influences from American soul and funk as well – but they come across with a mode that's very different from more standard reggae, especially the style of the music that would be more codified a few years later. Instead, there's a really rich sense of experimentation here – as Bunny Lee and his All Stars work on instrumental tracks, or alongside other key artists like Delroy Wilson, Rico Rodriguez, Tommy McCook, U Roy, or Winston Williams. Some tunes have amazingly trippy touches – and a few points even mix in some wild moog too – and titles include "Double Attack", "Ivan Itler The Conqueror", "Scarface", "Joe Lewis", "War", "Wet Vision", "When I Get My Freedom", "Smooth & Sorts", and "Death Rides A Horse". Quite a rare album from Peggy Lee – and a strange one too! The album features backings "conducted" by Frank Sinatra, done in a moody, flowing, dreamy and sad style – similar to his own work of the late 50s Capitol years, especially the more melancholy albums that we love so much. Frank's probably not doing the bulk of the work, though, as the record also credits Nelson Riddle with arrangements – and Riddle's sound here is very strong, again in the mood of his best sad work with Sinatra – territory explored on albums like Wee Small Hours or Only The Lonely. Titles include "That's All", "Please Be Kind", "He's My Guy", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", and "If I Should Lose You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 70s green label pressing. Cover has some aging in back.)

Peggy LeeLatin Ala Lee! ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Very groovy work from Peggy – a set of tunes tone with a nice little Latin flair! The tunes themselves are all Broadway hits of the late 50s and early 60s, but they're redone wonderfully here – so that they often bear little resemblance to the originals. Jack Marshall handled the arrangements with a swinging and jazzy sound – really throwing in some tight syncopated rhythms to make the album crackle more than most of Peggy's other work from the time. Titles include "Hey There", "I Am In Love", "Heart", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Party's Over", "Dance Only With Me", and "I Enjoy Being A Girl". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label mono pressing. Cover has a partial split on top & bottom, but looks nice overall.)

Decca, 1963. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of Peggy Lee's greatest albums ever – a set of tracks recorded with the Gordon Jenkins chorus and orchestra, in a moody sound that would forever be remembered by the brilliant title track! "Lover" kicks off the whole set with a bang – soaring searing strings, over which Peggy rolls in on stronger vocals than she'd recorded in years – setting a pace that's nicely kept on tracks that include "River River", "Sans Souci", "I'm Glad There Is You", "This Is A Very Special Day", and "That's Him Over There". Herbie MannReggae ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1974. Used ... $4.99
A surprisingly strong mix of 70s modes happening here – as the funky flute of Herbie Mann takes on some of the nascent reggae grooves of the time – with results that are a lot nicer than you might expect! There's some core rhythms on the record from Tommy McCook, but Herbie's regular keyboardist Pat Rebillot also adds in some surprisingly nice lines too – making the whole thing way more than just another session cut down in Kingston. One real surprise is a very extended take on "My Girl", which runs for over 18 minutes and takes up all of side two – and other cuts include "Rivers Of Babylon", "Swinging Shepherd Blues", and "Ob La Di". Peggy MarchIf You Loved Me – RCA Recordings From Around The World 1963 to 1969 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Peggy March is a singer with a surprisingly varied career – an artist that most folks know for only her early little girl pop fame – but one who went onto record a very unusual range of sounds as the 60s moved on! RCA was her label, and while she never hit the heights of the charts after her early hit, the company was more than committed to allowing Peggy's sound to grow and flourish – especially on the international scene, where she not only recorded tracks in other languages, but also picked up new non-American songs, and served up very cool English-language versions! This set really does a great job of moving past the early stuff, and looking at this lost later legacy of March's music – sounds that we'd easily compare to the hipper 60s material by Jackie DeShannon, even though Peggy didn't write her own material. The range of studio talents really keeps things interesting – there's even one track arranged by Ennio Morricone – and titles include "He's Back Again", "If You Loved Me", "He Couldn't Care Less", "Watch What You Do With My Baby", "Johnny Cool", "Kilindini Docks", "Eh Bravo", "Passo Su Passo", "Too Long Away", "Wasurenaiwa", "Ne Joue Pas Les Enfants", "He Couldn't Care Less", "This Heart Wasn't Made To Kick Around", "Can't Stop Thinkin About Him", and "Fool Fool Fool". Bear Family (Germany), 1960s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A wonderful lost chapter in the career of Charlie McCoy – an artist that most folks know for his harmonic work as a Nashville musician, but who also cut some surprisingly great vocal tracks over the years! Most of that work is presented here, on a series of recordings that were mostly done for Monument Records, plus a few other labels – almost always with Charlie's voice in the lead, but also some great harmonica solos along the way! Production is in that great Monument style of the late 60s – that way the label had of taking country roots and pushing them into more rock-based styles – sounding nice and tight, but also never too pop or commercial too. Many tunes are covers, but Charlie does a great job of opening them up in new ways – on a set list of 29 titles that include "Let Him Go", "Girl", "My Little Woman", "Cold Cold World", "Candy Man", "Up Tight", "Mach 1", "Hoot Owl Blues", "Harpoon Man", "Hey Baby", "Up Tight", "Juke", "Cherry Berry Wine", "Screamin Shoutin Beggin Pleadin", "Good Vibrations", and "My Little Woman". Reggie MooreFurioso ... LP
Mainstream, 1972. Sealed Gatefold ... $19.99
We only know Reggie Moore from a handful of records – but he's a hell of a pianist, and one who definitely earns the furioso name in the title! There's a complicated mix of ideas going on in Reggie's head here – sometimes the soaring modalism of the McCoy Tyner generation, sometimes the more subtle approach of the Bill Evans scene, and at other points a more gutbucket style that has Moore exploding in ways that should have made him a stronger contender for the more soulful side of his contemporaries. Yet it's the balance between all these peaks that make Moore so unique, and the album such a charmer – as Reggie works here on acoustic piano throughout, with Hank Haynie on bass and Chip Lyles on drums. Titles include "Little Tracy", "Furioso", "Collage", "Consider Her Ways", and "Where Is The Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Dawn/7T's (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $19.99 40.99
The complete early works of Mungo Jerry – one of the most unique groups on the British scene in the early 70s! Mungo Jerry have a style that's strongly influenced by American roots – blues, folk, hillbilly, jug, and string band sounds – of the sort that you'd hear reworked in more contemporary rock modes by American acts like Canned Heat or Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – but served up here with a very different vibe! There's a weird compressed style of productions on many tracks, which really works perfectly with the vocals of Ray Dorset – almost creating a bridge from decades past of musical expression, and the glam era of the time at which the albums were released! Apart from a few hits on the radio over here, the full Mungo Jerry sound has never been explored – and this huge package features five full albums, along with bonus tracks, all packaged in these very cool LP-styled sleeves. Albums include the self-titled Mungo Jerry, Electronically Tested, You Don't Have To Be In The Army, Boot Power, and Long-Legged Woman – plus 22 more bonus tracks too. CD

VariousHottest Hits – Treasure Isle Presents 84 Classic Rocksteady & Reggae Sounds From The Vaults (3CD set) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 29.99
These may not be the hottest hits in pop music, but the set is a stunning collection of early reggae and rocksteady treasures from the vaults of the Treasure Isle label – that famous Jamaican imprint that was the home of producer Duke Reid – a force who really helped the sounds of Kingston step forward at the end of the 60s! In the rocksteady years, Treasure Isle was every bit as important as Studio One – maybe even more so – and the quality of the cuts here is a huge testament to the choice of artists and top-shelf handling that Reid brought to his work. In the UK scene of the late 70s, a series of Hottest Hits collections re-introduced the reggae audience to the Treasure Isle sounds from a few years before – and six of those collections are brought together here, for a whopping package of 84 tracks. Reid was especially great at working with groups and duets, and there's plenty of those here – in a selection of work from The Sensations, Melodians, Paragons, Alton Ellis, Techniques, John Holt, Phyllis Dillon, Claudette Miller, Joya Landis, Ken Parker, Tennors, Rosalyn Sweat, Three Tops, Jamaicans, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, and many others. 3CD set features the rare Hottest Hits 3, which has alternate versions of all the tracks – and package also comes with 13 more bonus tracks too! The fantastic female side of Trojan Records – the legendary reggae label that formed a key bridge between Kingston and London back in the day – and helped introduce generations to the changing styles of Jamaican music in the 60s and 70s! Trojan's maybe best known for some of its big male artists, but this special set focuses on the equally strong female talent in the roster – sometimes singers who only got a chance to cut a single or two for Trojan, or who maybe found greater fame in later years – all brought together here in a double-length collection of classics and rarities. Titles include "Girlie Girlie" by Sophia George, "I Shall Sing" by Judy Mowatt, "Uptown Top Ranking" by Althea & Donna, "Hurt So Good" by Susan Cadogan, "I Let You Go Boy" by Dawn Penn, "Dynamic" by Paula Clarke, "My Willow Tree" by Hortense Ellis, "Honey Hush" by Millie Small, "Barbwire" by Nora Dean, "Lovin You" by Janet Kay & The Kaylets, "Back In My Arms Again" by Doreen Shaffer, "Give & You Get" by Marcia Griffiths, "Love Was All I Had" by Phyillis Dillon, "I'm Still In Love With You" by Marcia Aitken, and "Back Wey" by Faye Bennett. 49 tracks in all! A stunning set of modal soul jazz from the LA underground of the 60s – the only album we've ever seen by pianist J Reginald Andrews – and an earthy set that's filled with great tracks! The overall approach is piano and percussion plus horn bits – with Andrews on the keys, playing in solidly soulful waves of sound, really setting the scene for the album's strong work on alto, baritone, and trumpet. There's some conga at the bottom, and a freewheeling approach that reminds us a lot of the mighty first album by the Harold Johnson Sextet – a group who were certainly contemporaries of Andrews on the LA scene. Nearly all tracks are originals – and groovers – and titles include "Everyman's Brother", "Ah Na Na", "Chant", "The Debonaire", "Mystique Beauty", and "Song For J". LP, Vinyl record album

Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic moment from Frederick "Toots" Hibbert – a set that's maybe his equivalent to some of the key Island Records albums of the 70s from Bob Marley & The Wailers! Like those, the production here is top-shelf – handled partly by Joe Boyd, who brings a very respectful vibe to the set – and perhaps even goes for more of the soulful currents in Toots' vocals than before – at least in ways that might cross over more to American and British audiences than in the early days. Hibbert really seems to take to the spirit of the moment, and rises up with these beautifully expressive passages – of the sort that he may never have hit this well again! ✨✧ VariousJamaica To Toronto – Soul, Funk, & Reggae 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing musical discovery – funky music made in Canada by ex-patriot Jamaicans – easily some of the most obscure post-colonial grooves we've ever dug! The sound here is a lot less reggae-based than you'd expect – as most of the tunes are in a really nitty gritty funky 45 sort of mode – filled with strong influences from American soul of the late 60s and early 70s, but often done with a style that's a bit dirtier and fuzzier, especially at the bottom of the rhythms. There's a few traces of Jamaican production styles on the records, but overall the album's more like finding a lost stash of rare 45s from some smaller American funk scene – all work that's totally darn fresh, and beautifully presented here in a lavish booklet filled with enough notes and vintage images to rival the work coming out of the Numero camp of late! Great stuff all around, with titles that include "Chips Chicken Banana Split" and "Fugitive Song" by Jo Jo & The Fugitives, "Eternal Love" by The Sheiks, "Memories" by Noel Ellis, "Right On" and "I Wish It Would Rain" by The Cougars, "Grand Funk" by Jackie Mittoo, "Love Is The Answer" by Ram, "You're So Good To Me Baby" by Eddie Spencer, "Mr Fortune" by The Hitch-Hikers with Mighty Pope, "Fire (She Need Water)" by Wayne McGhie & The Sounds Of Joy, and "I Believe In Music" by Bob & Wisdom. ✨✧ VariousSampled Reggae ... LP
Wagram (France), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
When most folks think of sample cuts, they think "vintage soul", "funky jazz", or "70s funk" – but over the years, as hip hop and other styles have evolved, the world of Jamaican music has been sampled heavily too – a sometimes-overlooked legacy of creative re-use that's finally given its due in this collection! The set's similar to others in the Sampled series, in that it presents tracks that have gone on to use in famous tracks by more contemporary artists – Beastie Boys, Jay Z, Kanye West, and others – but the track list is maybe more surprising, as it covers a range of reggae periods and styles, and makes for a great sense of variety throughout – great listening on its own, even if you're not digging for samples! Titles include "I Will" by John Holt, "Babylon Too Rough" by Gregory Isaacs, "Bam Bam" by Sister Nancy, "Soul Fire" by Lee Perry, "I Need A Roof" by The Mighty Diamonds, "Murder She Wrote" by Chaka Demus & Pliers, "Santa Barbara" by Sly & Robbie, "Solid As A Rock" by Sizzla, "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians, "Sun Is Shining" by Bob Marley, "Jump For Jah" by Ini Kamoze, and "One Spliff A Day" by Billy Boyo. ✨✧ Peggi BluBlu Blowin' (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Expansion (UK), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet 80s soul from Peggi Blu – an artist who recorded this gem for Capitol Records with hardly any fanfare at the time, but who's gotten plenty of play from the set over the years! Peggi's got a style that's nicely unassuming – a voice that still has all the range and power of the bigger female soul stars of the time, but without being as pushy or overly diva-conscious – a quality that's helped the record to grow strongly in reputation over the years, as Peggi herself has continued to record other wonderful work too. Titles include "Over & Over", "Mesmerize Me", "All & All", "I Believe In You", "All the Way With You", "Two Can Play At That Game", and "Tender Moments". CD features bonus tracks – "Two Can Play At That Game (radio edit)", "All The Way With You (late night mix)", and "All the Way With You (day time mix)". CD

✨✧ EthiopiansReggae Power (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Reggae Power may have the name of the growing Jamaican genre in its title, but the set's still heavy on the rocksteady and ska rhythms that first provided fire for the sharp vocals of The Ethiopians – the trio's great way of trading vocals back and forth, at a level that seems perfectly suited for the grooves! There's certainly some harmonies in the mix, but the approach here really shows the different way that some of the Jamaican groups were setting themselves apart at the time – not just through the rhythms, but in the way their vocals interacted with the music. Titles include "What A Fire", "Everything Crash", "Women Capture Man", "One Dollar Of Soul", "Gun Man", and "Feel The Spirit". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bunny LeeFull Up – Early Reggae Productions 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Peggy LeeLet's Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
zAn incredibly lovely later album from Peggy Lee – her first album for Atlantic, and proof that she was still growing tremendously as an artist, well into the 70s! The record's title track was a tune written for Peggy by Paul McCartney, who also produced the number for the record – and it's got a wonderful "adult" feel – one that steps off even more from Peggy's last Capitol recordings. But in some way, the real star of the album is Dave Grusin – who co-produced the rest of the record along with Peggy, and who gives the session a warmly laidback jazz-based approach – one that's miles away from Peggy's 60s work, and handled in a maturely mellow groove that's totally great. The sound is tight, but never too slick – and Peggy's aging vocals sparkle beautifully amidst a host of modern tunes that include "He Is The One", "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "Sweet Lov'liness", "Sweet Talk", "Always", and the funky classic "Easy Evil". CD features bonus tracks "The Nickel Ride", "Let's Keep Dancing", "I Wanna Be Seduced", "I Am His Lady", and "Let's Love (alt version)". CD

Harlem Shuffle (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from this series that really knows how to dig deep into the early years of reggae – going past some of the oft-reissued tracks to pull up some rare gems from a nice variety of small indie labels! The work here perfectly bridges the scenes in Kingston and London at the end of the 60s – tracks that are bubbling over with the new rhythmic experiments from Jamaica, but which have more than enough soul to get some global play as well – served up on cuts that include "Hot Sauce" by Dave Barker, "Psychedelic Reggae" by Winston Wright with The Supersonics, "Together" by Delroy Wilson, "Ride On Ride On" by Big Youth & Dennis Brown, "Reggae In The Fields" by Augustus Pablo, "Someday Someway" by The Leaders, "Keep On Pushing" by Lloyd & Glen, "Music Is The Key" by Roy Shirley, and "Hold Him Joe" by Glen Adams. ✨✧ VariousReggae Africa – Roots & Culture 1972 to 1981 ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool little package, and one that looks at the rise of reggae on the African scene of the 70s – including many tracks that mark a moment before that big 80s wave of African-based superstars that rose up to larger global fame! The cuts here are maybe a bit more homegrown and unusual – and there's a fair bit of work by West African acts who didn't always record in a reggae mode, but managed to add the rhythms to the palette of their albums in the 70s. As with all the titles on the Africa Seven label, the set list is great – with titles that include "I'll Be Your Man" by Christy Essien, "Bobby" by The Lijadu Sisters, "Darling I'm So Proud Of You" by Black Reggae, "Hello Friends" by Georges Happi, "Goodbye Friends" by The Mebusas, "Hop Sy Trong" by Tala Andra Marie, "I'll Cry" by Essama Bikoula, "All This Nonsense" by Carlos & Miki, and "Babette D O" by Pasteur Lappe. Sonorama Discos, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Something of a split single from Don Cuco – a set that features him remixing a track by Ibeyi on side one – really expanding on the warm vocals of the sister duo, with beats that are gentle and glowing, but which move nicely in a strong sort of Afro House mode! The flipside features two originals by Don – "Milan" which is a nicely moody club track, almost like the sort we used to love on early Nu Groove, with keyboards doing as much as the beats – and "Agua Es Vida", a track that does a nice job of mixing acoustic percussion samples with beats, all in a warm global sort of vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ InspirationsReggae Fever (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The Inspirations were maybe not the biggest vocal group on the Jamaican scene at the start of the 70s – but man, they really tear things up in a wonderful way on this classic set with production by Joe Gibbs! As with other Gibbs' projects, there's a few numbers here by other artists too – but the main focus is the sublime vocal tunes that have the Inspirations in the lead – singing in a duo mode that's clearly inspired by 60s soul acts from the US, but with the vocals more harmonized together, instead of trading back and forth – yet at a level that still makes for a really raw edge overall! Rhythms are fantastic – nicely bubbling in a rocksteady mode – and Inspirations titles include "Wet Dreams", "Ease Up", "Samfie Man", "Why Do You Laugh At My Calamities", "Bongo Nyah", "Who You Gonna Run To", "Sweet Sensation", and "Fattie Fattie". Other tracks on the album include "Only Yesterday" by Ken Parker, plus the tracks "Liquidator", "Reggae Fever", and "Mad Rooster" by Lloyd Willis & The Destroyers. PLUS, this 2CD set features a huge amount of added material – 43 more tracks that are all contemporaneous Joe Gibbs productions – work by The Reggae Boys, Destroyers, Soul Sisters, Johnny Moore & The Supersonics, Soul Mates, Hippy Boys, Stranger Cole, Niney, Ken Parker, Ernest Williams, Ansel Collins, and even more by The Inspirations. ✨✧ Mighty DiamondsPass The Knowledge – Reggae Anthology (2 CD & DVD) ... CD
17 North Parade, 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 2 CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
The Mighty Diamonds pass the knowledge – but they also pass the kouchie on the first track on the record – an indication of the way these guys can serve up wisdom with a laidback vibe that makes their message so wonderfully down to earth! The Mighty Diamonds are kind of a second chapter to the earlier trio mode that first sprang forth in Jamaican music during the rocksteady years – more roots-oriented here on most of the tracks, which are pulled from singles on labels that include Impact, Thunder Bolt, Hot Heat, and Channel One. Titles include "Right Time","Cat-O-Nine", "Jail House", "Pass The Kouchie", "Bodyguard", "Pray Unto Thee", "Mr. Chin Slippers", "Morgan The Pirate", and "Struggling". It's a generous collection to say the least – with 40 tracks on 2CDs – plus a bonus DVD of the Mighty Diamonds performance at the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash festival! CD
