Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
EmArcy/Universal (Japan), 1959. Used ... $16.99
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time – and since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – the album's essentially a Kind Of Blue-era Miles album, recorded without Miles on trumpet, and grooving in a slightly more soul-based Adderley mode! Given the presence of Coltrane, there's a bit less of the gutbuckety soul jazz that Cannon was cutting in his own Quintet – but that's more than ok with us, as the Coltrane solos more than make up for that difference! The set's got 2 great originals by Coltrane – "The Sleeper" and "Grand Central" – plus the cuts "Wabash" and "Limehouse Blues". CD

Cannonball AdderleyPresenting Cannonball (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Savoy/Denon (Japan), 1955. Used ... $9.99
One of Cannonball Adderley's first albums – recorded for Savoy way back in 1955, and done with a free and open style that's a nice contrast to his tighter sides for Mercury! The album's very relaxed – that hardbop blowing session mode that Savoy virtually pioneered – letting the players open up in comfortable studio space, working together almost as they would on a hip live date. Cannon's in the lead on alto, and the group also features Nat Adderley on cornet, Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – a classic Savoy rhythm section for the two horn players. Tracks are long, and titles include "Spontaneous Combustion", "Still Talkin To Ya", "Caribbean Cutie", and "A Little Taste". CD

Nat AdderleyMuch Brass (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Riverside (Japan), 1959. Used ... $19.99
Despite the "much brass" tag in the title, this album's really just a sextet session – and not a clunky big brass ensemble one! Cannonball's brother plays with a very swingin' sextet that includes the brassy touches of Slide Hampton on trombone and Laymon Jackson on tuba. Wynton Kelly plays piano and Sam Jones is on bass, and the set grooves with a nice snapping rhythm section that keeps the brass players from getting to soppy. Nat's cornet has that pinched funky sound that he had when playing with his brother, and Hampton's trombone is as deep and soulful as always. Cuts include "Blue Concept", "Israel", "What Next?", and "Accents". All the material is very hip, and written by writers like Duke Pearson, Slide Hampton, Gigi Gryce, and Adderley. CD

✨✧ Nat AdderleyNaturally! (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Jazzland (Japan), 1961. Used ... $24.99
A strong showcase for young Nat Adderley's talents on cornet – and an album that's got a different feel that his work with his more famous brother's combo at the same time! The style here is simple – Nat blowing with 2 different quartets – one with Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums (all from Cannonball's group) – the other with the rhythm section of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Despite's Nat's reputation as a gutbuckety soul jazz player, he actually gets in some nicely lyrical licks in this set – blowing in a soulful modern style that almost recalls the work of Carmell Jones at times! Titles include "Chloe", "Images", "Scotch & Water", and "Naturally". CD

Gryphon/Muzak (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $8.99 24.99
The trumpet of Franco Ambrosetti meets the orchestrations of Don Sebesky – and the result is a wonderful batch of tracks that take us back to some of Don's best work of the late 60s! Ambrosetti's got a beautifully evocative tone on his horn here – and he's supported by a cast that includes Eddie Daniels on flute and sax, Joe Beck on guitar, and George Gruntz on piano – all given plenty of space by Sebesky to express themselves within the larger group – making for work that's full and rich, yet also relatively personal and intimate too. Titles include the funky groover "Lugano Lady", plus "Johanna", "Sleeping Gypsy", and "Demoiselle". CD

An overlooked treasure from the glory days of A&M Records – and a set that's got a richness in sound that you might not guess from the cover! Renee Armand has this airy vocal style that's maybe informed by earlier generations of folk, but which is set here to really lovely larger arrangements by Mike Melvoin – who uses acoustic and electric elements in nicely intertwining ways – almost as if the whole thing's an American take on territory that Joe Boyd was exploring over in the UK! At times, there's almost a folk funk approach to the music, thanks to gentle basslines that work wonderfully with Renee's vocals – and titles include "I Think You're Letting Me Go", "Elizabeth Rain", "Guess I Never Knew You", "Raining In LA", "Falling Ladies", and "Does Anybody Love You". The debut set from Atmosphere – and a real standard-setting album that points the way towards future success, while still having a nicely gritty vibe! There's more here that might tie the record to the sound of New York than later Atmosphere work – starker beats, less warmth in the other sounds, and rhymes that are maybe a bit more in your face than the personal moments that Slug would later deliver. Titles include "Caved In", "Adjust", "Current Status", "Brief Description", "Multiples", "4:30 am", "Cuando Limpia El Humo", "The Outernet", "Ode To The Modern Man", and "Sound Is Vibration". Takumi Awaya's pictured on the cover along with his bass – in an image that will give you an idea of the richness of the set, with Awaya's instrument often stepping out as the leading force of the trio – alongside the piano of Takuma Yamamoto and Naoki Takahashi! Yamamoto still gets in plenty of space, but the record, which is a live one, is often a lot more about the interaction between bass and piano instead of just having the piano in the lead – captured with warm tones that really recall some of the more inventive Japanese trio sessions of the 70s. Titles include a great remake of the Ryo Fukui tune "Mellow Dream" – plus "Pretty Woodstock", "Breeze Suite", "I Should Care", and "Too Late Now". CD

Benny BaileyMusic Of Quincy Jones (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1960. Used ... $19.99
An excellent album that's a perfect document of the strong impact that Quincy Jones had in the transatlantic jazz scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set was recorded in 1960, and features two players that Quincy would leave behind in Europe to have a huge influence on the scene. Trumpeter Benny Bailey is the greatest of these – and his impact on jazz in Germany and Sweden during the 60s and 70s cannot be discounted. The other is drummer Joe Harris, who does excellent work here in a group that includes Arne Domnerus on sax, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – all Swedes that Quincy picked up after touring the country heavily during the late 50s. The set grooves with the best of Jones' work on Mercury from the time – and although Quincy's not listed in the credits, it's probably only because of contractual reasons. Titles are all Jones originals – including "Meet Benny Bailey", "Plenty, Plenty Soul", "Fallen Feathers", and "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". CD

Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". Includes the original ablum with bonus tracks, original rough mixes live at Woodstock 1969, Blu-Ray audio in stereo and 5.1 surround - high resolution audio 96 kHz/24 bit with bonus tracks and a documentary and the Rag Mama Rag 7 inch. The soundtrack that put John Barry over the top – and to many, THE James Bond soundtrack! The album chills from the first notes of the haunting title theme – the majestic "Goldfinger", sung by Shirley Bassey with a tone that's as dangerous as a razor-sharp hat spinning through the air! Barry then takes over with some wonderful instrumentals – a blend of crime jazz, mood pieces, chase themes, and more – all peppered with that dark dark Bond theme that we love so much! Stripped-down Count Basie from the start of the 60s – a great little set that has the Count working with some of the best players from his larger group, in a session of even more intimate small combo material! The sounds here echo the Basie groove of the earlier years, but the overall presentation is a fair bit more modern – nicely syncopated with that sense of space discovered by Basie in the 50s – and perfectly interpreted by players who include Thad Jones on trumpet, Frank Wess on flute, Frank Foster on tenor, Freddie Green on guitar, Eric Dixon on flute, and Basie himself on both piano and organ – the latter of which is quite a treat! Classic! Following the fairly radical change in style from the sample-crafted Paul's Boutique to the rawer hip hop and live band vibe of Check Your Head, Ill Communication feels more like a step forward than a reinvention – and it's a great one! The manic trio vocals are at peak precision without losing the playfulness, especially on tracks that lean on gritty NY hip hop beats. The live band-rooted tracks – ranging from jazz and funk to fuzzy punk – is more diverse and all the better thanks to heartier contributions from Money Mark on keyboards. Classic singles and deep cut favorites all the way – including "Sure Shot", "Sabotage", "Futterman's Rule", "Shambala", "The Scoop", "Do It", "Heart Attack Man", "Bodhisattva Wow", the killer Jimmy Smith tribute "Root Down", "Get It Together" featuring a very sharp Q-Tip guest spot, and lots more. Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". Philips/Dusty Groove, 1972. New Copy ... $4.99 18.98
A stunner of a record from the mighty Jorge Ben – and a record that catapulted the Brazilian singer to international fame at the time! Ben had already been making magic for almost a decade down in Brazil – and his compositions and grooves left an undeniable impact on the scene in the post-bossa years – but this album has Jorge really emerging as the global soul star he was destined to be – from his powerful stare on the cover, right down to the grit in the grooves! The sound here is a refinement of the samba soul mode that Ben had been brewing up from the late 60s onward – a skittish mix of older samba elements, American soul, and some slight fuller production that really comes into its own here – mixing all the acoustic elements at the core with just a slight electric flourish, but never losing its edge in the process – all to provide Jorge with a sublime backdrop for his really amazing vocals. The set's a monument in funky Brazilian soul – and it includes the huge hit "Taj Mahal", which still sounds great, even after all these years – plus loads of other gems that include "O Circo Chegou", "Domingo 23", "Fio Maravilha", "Paz E Arroz", "Morre O Burro Fico O Homem", and "Que Nega E Essa". A gem all the way through – and a record we'd never part with! CD

Benson's fresh off his work with the Jack McDuff quartet, and his style's nice and lean, with some good riffs, and a very tight approach to the strings. During the late 50s – after an initial burst of recordings with Blue Note, and before a later successful run for the label – Art Blakey recorded on a number of labels with a lesser-known version of The Jazz Messengers. This album's from that stretch – and like others from the period it's a darn nice batch of tracks, and while it lacks some of the polished tightness of the later Blue Notes it crackles with the energy that's been the Jazz Messengers trademark from day one. The group features Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the set's a loose batch of hardbop numbers like "Casino", "Ugh!", "Mirage", "The Biddie Griddies", "Potpourri" and "Reflections Of Buhania". Blue Note, 1964. Used ... $8.99
Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! But despite that famous image, the music is more than worthy of attention – as the group features that unusual sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers that made some amazing sounds in the mid 60s – Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass! Morgan and Shorter are really growing and pushing themselves in different ways than their work with Blakey at the start of the 60s – and the addition of Fuller, and especially Walton, really gives the group this rounded warmth that shows a new level of maturity – a quality that comes through both in the playing, and the writing – as songs are all originals by Walton, Fuller, Morgan, and Shorter. Titles include "The Egyptian", "Sortie", "Calling Miss Khadija", and "Mr Jin". CD features the bonus track "It's A Long Way Down", penned by Wayne Shorter. This is the newly remastered version, too – with additional notes and photos. CD

Blue Note/Time Life (Spain), 1960. Used ... $4.99
OA landmark album that had one of the best versions of the Jazz Messengers taking a big step forward – thanks to some increased songwriting by the group's young tenor genius – Wayne Shorter! Shorter's tunes take up all of the second half of the record, and all of them have gone onto become classics – "Giantis", "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On", and "Noise In The Attic" – all tunes that hint at the modernism that was to come in Wayne's music, and which especially seem to push his tenor and the trumpet of Lee Morgan into the range of more mature colors and tones that would grace their music as the 60s moved on. Meanwhile, there's a rock-solid rhythm drive at the core – Art Blakey on drums, Jymie Merritt on bass, and the great Bobby Timmons on piano – still making a strong contribution to the group. Lee Morgan wrote the nine minute tune "Johnny's Blue" on side one – which also includes a beautiful version of "Like Someone In Love" – a masterpiece in soulful lyricism! CD features one bonus alternate track, too. CD

Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $3.99
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) CD also features a bonus version of "Moanin" and a warm-up track between Lee & Rudy. CD

Not the first album that Art Blakey recorded with the title Night In Tunisia, but one that's maybe the best – as the session has these really long, open tracks that are a perfect showcase for the genius of this legendary lineup of the Jazz Messengers! The group here features a tremendous trio at the core Bobby Timmons on piano, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – driven on nicely by Blakey's drums and bass work by Jymie Merritt – with that full-on energy that the Messengers could have at their best, while also allowing more than ample space for tremendous solos from each musician! Right from the very first note – a crashing wave of sound from Blakey's drums – you know that you're in for something very special – and titles include "Night In Tunisia", plus the tracks "Yama", "Kozo's Waltz", "Sincerely Diana", and a version of Timmons' great "So Tired". CD features bonus tracks "When Your Lover Has Gone" and "Sincerely Diana (alternate)". CD

RCA (Japan), 1959. Used ... $14.99
Seminal work from Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers – recorded at a time when that group was really coming together! After a slightly wayward year of 1957, when the Messengers had a different lineup away from Blue Note, Art re-forged the group for the end of the 50s with a rock-solid array of players – including a young Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Benny Golson on tenor, with a sense of arrangement that really helps give the group some focus – while still letting the solos open up in a live setting like this! All tracks are long, and played with lots of fire – and the kind of amazing open-ended solos that the group could cook up whenever they were working in a live environment. Titles on this third volume feature bonus work by Gana M'Bow on bongos and Kenny Clarke on drums on a long version of "Night In Tunisia" – plus the Benny Golson gems "Along Came Manon" and "Out of The Past" – both done very nicely here! Blue Note, 1954. Used ... $2.99
A wonderfully hard-storming set – and a record that not only firmly put the Jazz Messengers on the map, but also set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The group here is the early version of the Messengers – almost co-led by drummer Art Blakey with pianist Horace Silver – and featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, just a few months before his early death – plus Lou Donaldson on alto and Curley Russell on bass. The presence of alto instead of tenor makes the sound slightly different than later incarnations of the group – and the overall approach is one that virtually defines the shift from straight bop to hardbop in the 50s – a mode that both Blakey and Silver were key in creating. Tracks include "Split Kick", "Quicksilver", "Mayreh", and "A Night In Tunisia". CD features 2 bonus tracks, and great remastering! CD

Paul BleyImprovisie (limited numbered edition) ... CD
America/Verve, 1972. Used ... $29.99
Incredible work from Paul Bley – and a record that captures him in his excellent electric period, working in a different setting than we've heard him elsewhere! The group on the set is a trio – one that matches Bley's work on electric piano and synthesizer with percussion from Han Bennink and vocals, piano, bass, and additional synthesizer from a young Annette Peacock! Peacock is especially restrained on the record – especially if you only know her later, straighter work – and her contribution here is wonderfully subtle and extremely lovely. Side one features the track "Improvisie", a free improvisation with Bley on electric piano and synthesizer – and tonalities are as "out" as the playing, which is generally quite spacious and dynamic – though hardly quiet. The second side features a Peacock tune titled "Touching" that's a bit more intense – very much in the spirit of the work on the first side, and a unique slice of magic from this one-off session! CD

An album that's maybe not as modern as some of Paul Bley's other records – but one that's still got a compelling quality throughout! The session supposedly takes inspiration from Gregorian chants (somewhat big on the recording scene at the time of the 1994 date) – but the music is all jazz all the way, a unique combination of Bley's marvelous tones on the piano, the electric cello of David Eyges, and the drums of Bruce Ditmas. Eyges mostly plays his instrument like a jazz bass – and an acoustic one at that – and there's a lot more swing here than you might expect, but still all the right touches of tone to remind us that Bley's on piano. Titles include "The New You", "Funhouse", "Please Don't", "Wisecracks", "Russell", "Digitant", and "Decompose". CD

A nicely expanded version of the great second album from this very cool UK group – an early 80s act named after a famous song by Dave Brubeck – and one who definitely bring all sorts of jazz elements into their music! Blue Rondo A La Turk were pre-Sade, pre-acid jazz, and have a quality that resonates with some of the more jazz-based expressions of contemporaries like Working Week or Kalima – not straight jazz, but a definite jazz-influenced way of putting over British pop, and with a warmth that's very different than some of the more electronic sounds of the time! The group often dip into some Latin elements in their rhythms, but also have all the charms of bigger British pop groups of the time – a wonderful blend that comes through loud and clear on titles that include "Slipping Into Daylight", "Masked Moods", "Samba No Pe", "Hot Corner", "Smoking Dynamite", and "Are You Satisfied". 2CD edition features 19 more bonus tracks – including the previously-unissued cuts "Let's Get Real", "Kool Aid", "Devil Doll", "Love Let Me Lose You", "Hot Corner (early version)", "Mystery & Imagination", "Let It Go", and "Samba No Pe (early version)" – plus the tracks "Dirty Games", "The Method", and "Heavens Revisited" – and some 12" single mixes too! One of the stunning late 60 psych rock classics on Mainstream Records – and, like the rest, a set that's a real standout at the time – and one of the few musical statements by a group who never got picked up and pushed more heavily by another label! Yet that quality is what makes the whole thing wonderful – a freaky, fuzzy east coast set with a very down to earth vibe – music that would have been garage a few years before, but which has picked up some very heady influences along the way – especially in the strong use of fuzz and distortion on the guitar! Drummer Chuck Monica has a nicely urgent vibe at times, echoed by the bass of Victor Muglia – and lead singer Brian Cooke delivers some great work on organ too! Deram/Universal, 1967. New Copy 2CDs ... $19.99 21.99
Genius, pure genius from a young David Bowie – an album that we've always treasured as much as Ziggy Stardust! This set's pre-Hunky Dory, pre-Space Oddity – and it's an amazing little record that's almost completely devoid of guitars – instead using weird woodwinds (lots of oboe!), soaring strings, and offbeat orchestrations to carry off the tunes – all of which are as weird, mad, and wonderful as anything Bowie wrote in later years! The subject matter of the songs is almost a dark reflection of the picture postcard England that you'd find in work by The Kinks – the local pederast, weird guy who lives with his mum, old military geezer who can't get out of the past, cross-dressing soldiers, a gravedigger about to meet his death, and hip Londoners gallivanting all over town – all delivered with a sharpness that's stunning. We honestly think the record is flawless – incredibly complicated instrumentally, but incredibly groovy too – with all the edge you'll always love in Bowie, but in a fresh young flavor too. Years back, as young Bowie-heads, we always passed this one by – assuming it was unformed early roughness – but it's not, and is an incredible album that would have been more than enough for any other artist to build a career on. Includes "Uncle Arthur", "Sell Me A Coat", "Rubber Band", "Love You Till Tuesday", "There Is A Happy Land", "When I Live My Dream", and more. CD

Encino/Muzak (Japan), 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 24.99
A really charming little set from vocalist Bobbi Boyle – a singer in Encino during the late 60s, working here with a great mix of jazz, bossa, and all things groovy! The album's almost a Sunshine Pop take on jazz vocals – one that has Bobbi singing with a sweet small combo, and vocalizing in these lightly skipping lines that are really beautiful – a bit like Lynn Marino on her famous album with Frank Cunimundo – a set that would be a very good comparison to this album too! But at another level, there's echoes here of some of the hipper European vocalists of the 60s – like Monica Zetterlund or Karin Krog – although Boyle's sound is definitely one that was born and bred in the good ol' US of A. Many of the tunes are familiar 60s numbers, but they're handled by Bobbi and the group with a really personal feel – one that brings gently grooving rhythms into play through most of the set, making for a really fresh approach to the music. Titles include "How Insensitive", "This Gal's In Love With You", "A Day In The Life", "It's Always 4 AM", "Love So Fine", "Lazy Day", "If You Go Away", and "Up Up & Away". The stunning debut of The Bronski Beat – a record that was one of a number of key releases in a bit wave of UK electro pop in the early 80s – but one that also really stood apart from the rest in the way it managed to mix its personal politics with its grooves! The fantastic Jimmy Somerville is in the group here on vocals – a much soulful singer than some of his contemporaries, with a vibe that links the queer politics of the record back to an earlier disco generation – while also using all the right elements to make for an 80s electo vibe that helped get these tunes in front of many ears that never would have expected such content! The backings are great too – with almost a ZZT love of warmer samples next to contemporary electronics – further enhancing some of the soulful aspects of the set. Titles include the classic "Smalltown Boy", plus "Screaming", "No More War", "Love & Money", "I Feel Love", "Heatwave", "Junk", "Need A Man Blues", "Why", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". Very rare, very obscure material from this important free jazz trio of the German scene in the 70s – a set that features one long performance originally issued on the JG label, despite the FMP-like image on the cover – plus two more tracks from the same year that appear here for the first time ever! "Just For Altena" offers up the power trio at their best – very freewheeling piano from Fred Van Hove, drums from Han Bennink, and tenor from Peter Brotzmann – with intensity that may well surpass the Machine Gun years, and an understanding of each players strengths that means that there's almost no tentative moments at all in the improvisation! "Filet Americain" and "ICP No 17" are from earlier in 1971 – and showcase a different, more sonic side of the trio – some tones that are at the farther end of hearing, which ruminate then blossom into bolder statements, but still often with a very abstracted approach to each instrument. Great stuff – and every bit as essential as any of the better-known Brotzman recordings of the time! CD

Right from the start, the album's a thing of brilliance – with very offbeat lyrics penned by Pete Brown, but in ways that are a bit more down to earth than some of his own records – set to music arranged by Bruce, with all sorts of jazzy elements that come from the work of Harry Beckett and Henry Lower on trumpets, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Art Themen on tenor and soprano, and Jon Hiseman and John Marshall on drums – all key players who were in that special space between jazz and rock on the UK scene of the time! Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1968. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 24.99
A pretty great and very strange album by avant pianist Dave Burrell – and maybe one of the best-known calling cards for his unique genius on the keys! Side one features an extended tune called "West Side Story", which is basically a medley of tunes from the musical, played with a nice dark edge by Burrell and a trio – with Sirone on bass and Bobby Kapp on drums, plus additional tambourine work by Pharoah Sanders! Side three features "East Side Colors", a great track in the ESP avant mode – and one that features killer drum work by Sonny Murray, and some fierce piano by Burrell – and side four features the long "Theme Stream Medley", another extended track, based on themes by Burrell. Other titles include "Margy Pargy", "Bobby & Si", "Bittersweet Reminiscence", and "Dave Blue". CD

Blue Note, 1963. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
One of the more legendary albums on Blue Note from the label's classic run – and for many folks, the quintessential album from guitarist Kenny Burrell! Burrell had been playing for a number of years, and had been already recorded by Blue Note on some other excellent records – yet here, there's really something different going on – a bit more of a groove, and a harder edge from Kenny's guitar – augmented with superb work from a group that features Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Major Holly on bass, Bill English on drums, and the great Ray Barretto on congas! The vibe is fantastic, and Turrentine's horn has a raspy edge that's beautiful – while the whole record moves with a very rhythmic groove – thanks to Ray's extra percussion contribution on the bottom! Titles include the classic groover "Chittlins Con Carne", an early jazz dance classic – plus "Soul Lament", "Wavy Gravy", and "Mule". CD

Wild work from the LA scene of the early 70s – a soulful jamming group that features work by ex-Doors Robby Krieger and John Densmore, plus keyboards by Roy Davies, and some great vocals by Jess Roden, who went onto record some great jazzy work on his own. The album's got the compressed and soulful feel you'd expect from work on the Blue Thumb label – and Roden's vocals, while a bit cliched at times, are still pretty great overall. The standout cut is the break classic "Sweet Danger", but if you don't mind a bit of rock in your soul, you might dig the whole thing. Blue Note, 1960. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
One of the greatest Donald Byrd albums ever – a smoking live performance spread out over two different records – all with some of the tightest, most grooving work that Byrd ever recorded in his early years on Blue Note! Part of the strength of the set is the group – as Don's trumpet is alongside the brilliant baritone of Pepper Adams – who plays with the deftness of a tenor, but with a richer, fuller sound – and the group also includes the great Duke Pearson on piano, who has this way of comping out tunes that are soulful, but richly lyrical too. The group's completed by Lex Humphries on drums and Laymon Jackson on bass. The whole thing's great – and this 2CD set features both volumes of the albums, plus a lot of extra material that wasn't on the vinyl versions! One of John Cale's greatest moments as a solo artist – a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Titles include "Cable Hogue", "Engine", "Save Us", "My Maria", "I Keep A Close Watch", "Helen Of Troy", and "Sudden Death" – plus a cover of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso". CD

Dazzling work from John Cale – exactly the kind of record that shows why his solo years were so great! The record's got this unusual vibe – on one hand, it's put together like a more conventional rock set of the time – but on the other, it's got strange dark currents that run through the whole thing in very weird ways – a bit like some of the Roxy Music edges from the early years. No surprise, both Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera contribute strongly to the set – but the energy of the record definitely comes from Cale's great songwriting and offbeat vocals – and his great ear for a weird-sounding tune. Titles include "Mr Wilson", "Rollaroll", "Ski Patrol", "Guts", "The Jeweller", and Cale's famous version of "Heartbreak Hotel". CD

Sure, Damo's not on vocals any more, but the instrumentation's still pretty darn great – and Can is also working more explicitly established global genre elements, but still really sounds like no one other than Can. Arguably one of the best records cut for the short-lived Mode label in the late 50s – and easily one of the best from trumpeter Conte Candoli too! For the session, Conte front a quartet with Vince Guaraldi on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Guaraldi's piano style's got a heck of a lot more soul than you'd expect, a detail that brings a nice depth to a session that might have been otherwise lightweight – and which comes off with the same strength overall as the pair's outing from the same time for the Crown label. Candoli seems to play about half the tracks with a mute, but still in a style that's more open and fluid than much of his other work from the time – and titles include "Tara Ferma", "Diane", "Mambo Blues", "Mediolistic", and "Walkie Talkie". Don CherrySymphony For Improvisers (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... $7.99
One of the first truly important records from Don Cherry as a leader – and an amazingly well-crafted session that brings together ideas from his early years with Ornette, and expands them with some of the freedoms he was learning from the European scene! The record boasts a format and lineup that's quite unusual for Blue Note at the time – 2 side-long "suite" tracks, performed by a group that features Cherry on cornet, Pharoah Sanders on tenor and piccolo, Karl Berger on vibes and piano, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Ed Blackwell on drums, and both Jean-Francois Jenny- Clark and Henry Grimes on bass! There's a fair bit of room for creative improvising on the session, but the overall album's a bit more structured than contemporary free jazz outings – and clearly shows the mark of Cherry's interpolation of styles at the time. Two long suites are entitled "Symphony For Improvisers" and "Manhattan Cry" – with shorter passages that include "Nu Creative Love", "Infant Happiness", "Manhattan Cry", and "Lunatic". CD

Ode (Japan), 1968. Used ... $24.99
A wonderful early project from Carole King – work that predates her well-known solo career of the 70s, and which is infinitely hipper overall! The groove here is a blend of the soulful roots that Carole was crafting for other artists on her compositions of the 60s – mixed with some of the hipper singer-songwriter modes of the late 60s – put together at a level that still quite far from cliches that would later mar the genre. The group's a trio – with Carole on piano and vocals, Danny Kootch Kortchmar on guitar and added vocals, and Charles Larkey on bass – and the overall feel is somewhere in the neighborhood of Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends, with a similar sense of freshness that would hardly be replicated again. Lou Adler did some great production on the record – and tracks include the group's great version of "Snow Queen", plus "Why Are You Leaving", "I Don't Believe It", "All My Time", "Victim Of Circumstance", "Now That Everything's Been Said", and "Man Without A Dream". The latter are shared by different group members from track to track – Dave Skinner, Colin Bass, Ernie Graham, and Barry Ford – which makes for a nice sense of variety that matches the instrumentation's shifts as well. Clive Palmer definitely has an original band here – a group who have some of the acoustic elements of The Incredible String Band, of which he was a part – but who also come across with a sound that's a lot more ancient, dark, and spooky too! Vocals are by Clive and Mick Bennett – both singers with a very moody approach – almost weary from battles in the field, coming back home to tell their tales – set to instrumentation that includes key use of organ amidst the acoustic elements, but almost as if it's a pump organ, which gives all the songs this wonderfully downbeat sort of vibe – a bit like when Nico uses harmonium. The set's definitely on the darkest side of the acid folk spectrum, and maybe has echoes of Current 93 and Wicker Man as well – on titles that include "Eleven Willows", "I Told Her", "Oh Bright Eyed One", "Heart Dancer", "Let It Be You", and "Solomon's Song". After a strong run of work in the 60s, Coleman's talents took varied paths in the 70s – at the end of which he served up his own music for a musical based on the life of PT Barnum – songs that are maybe better served here in the intimate setting of this album than they were on a larger stage – even though that sort of mode might not live up to PT's legacy! A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. An early gem from the great Sam Cooke – a pre-RCA session, but one that already has Sam showing a stronger jazzy side of his talents – as you might guess from the title! The Lady, in this case, is the late Billie Holiday – recently passed at the time of this recording, and lovingly paid tribute to by a young Sam Cooke – with vocals that have a perfect blend of sweet and raspy to really unlock the tension in Holiday's music – yet also deliver the sound with a much different vibe overall. The set's a great example of how strongly Cooke could sing in a sophisticated jazzy style – and he does a great job with Holiday standards like "God Bless The Child", "Solitude", "Lover Girl", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me". Rene Hall did the orchestrations – and the album's an interesting example of how Cooke, like Holiday, could work within conventional forms to work a subtly progressive agenda! An overlooked album from pianist Eddie Costa – recorded in the late 50s for Dot Records! The set's a bit different than some of Costa's other material from the time – in that has Eddie playing with a much heavier touch on the left hand – inflecting the keys in a bluesier mode, but also working here with some modern touches from drummer Paul Motian, who's in the trio along with bassist Wendell Marshall. Costa's tone has changed decidedly for the record – and he's often got a loudly flowing approach to the keys that echoes later work by McCoy Tyner, Steve Kuhn, and other key 60s innovators. And even though tracks are again mostly familiar numbers, Costa's really pushing them to new levels – pushing, pausing, and twisting them into unusual time structures and melodic progressions. Some of the most fantastic work ever recorded by pianist Franco D'Andrea – a set of solo improvisations, but served up with this wonderful sense of flow and lyricism – maybe almost in the territory of Keith Jarrett at points, but shaped in all these different ways that really reflect D'Andrea's strong legacy on the European scene by this point in his career! A few moments get relatively free, but Franco always swings things back – almost with this elliptical sort of energy that makes patterns even where there might not be – all delivered with this incredible command of the keyboard that clearly marks D'Andrea as one of the giants of his time, even though he's often overlooked! Titles include "Via Libera", "Ortwein 15", "Nadir", and "Sorapis". CD edition features rare bonus material too – the titles "Hard Steps", "Bluesprint", "Ymnus", and "No Idea Of Time". CD

Doctor Bird (UK), 1974. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 23.99
One of the most righteous albums to come out of the Kingston scene in the early 70s – a set that's driven by the new spirit of the Rastafarian generation, but which also pushes the music much more than some of the commercial efforts of the time! The style of the music here is almost to mainstream reggae what spiritual jazz was to 70s funk – richer, deeper, more thoughtful, driven by message, and carried forth through instrumentation and production – a heady brew cooked up by Lloyd Charmers in the studio, with work from Willie London on guitar, Lloyd Parks on bass, and Charmers himself on organ, piano, and lots of earthy percussion. Of course, the vocals of Ras Michael are the real driving forces of the record – again very different than any mainstream singers, as he stretches out on these long, hypnotic tracks that include "Run Come Rally", "Seventy Two Nations", "Zion Land", and "Know How You Stand". This killer 2CD version features a full bonus CD – 22 more Lloyd Charmers dub tracks from the mid 70s, all of which have never been on CD before! CD

✨✧ Tadd Dameron with John ColtraneMating Call (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Prestige, 1956. Used ... $9.99
A sublime early set from John Coltrane – and one of Tadd Dameron's greatest moments on record ever! The session's a laidback quartet one – with John Simmons on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, completing the group with Dameron on piano and Trane on tenor – all coming together in a style that's loose, but still quite sharp overall – especially given Coltrane's tremendous tone, which really helps take the record to the next level from the very first moment it comes into the mix! Dameron's piano is strong, but subtle – and his compositions are what really make the record great – tunes that include "Soultrane", "Mating Call", "Romas", "Super Jet", and "On A Misty Night". CD

Daughters Of AlbionDaughters Of Albion (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Fontana/Big Pink (South Korea), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
A lost psych classic from Daughters Of Albion – a set that mixes the sing-song nature of the tunes with some deeper LA production from Leon Russell – all in a great blend of styles that's really made the album a standout over the years! The group's a duo – Greg Dempsey and Kathy Yesse, both of whom have such long hair, it's hard to tell who's who – both singers who come from a folksy background, yet bring in that mix of Sunshine Pop modes that so many post-folkies on the west coast were using at the time – a great ear for sweet harmonies and catchy tunes, but with an undercurrent of darkness too! Titles include "I Love Her And She Loves Me", "Still Care About You", "Yes Our Love Is Growing", "Candle Song", "Lady Fingers", "Sweet Susan Constantine", "Well Wired", and "John Flip Lockup". CD
