Whitefield BrothersEarthology ... LP
Now Again, 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99 24.98
The long-awaited return of the Whitefield Brothers – melding global funk and tripped out psychedelia as masterfully as on their massive In The Raw album – and tripping it out and funking it up even more this time! The psychedelic sounds get more pronounced play this time out, but it's still well within the funk realm – gritty drums and percussion under fuzzed out rhythms, keys that range from a jazzy funk groove to thick layers of fuzz and bubbling atmospherics, exotic string accents, heady bass grooves and more. Their reach is global, too, with influences from the east and the west – and a heck of an impressive guest roster – with leftfield MCs on a couple gems – Edan & Mr Lif on "The Gift" and Percee P & MED on "Reverse" – plus Bajka, Brooklyn funk revival masters the El Michels Affair, and fellow psych funk traveller Quantic. Titles include "Joyful Exaltation", "Safari Strut", "Taisho", "Sad Nile", "Ntu", "Pamukkale", "Alin", "Breakin Through" feat El Michels Affair, "Sem Yelesh", "Lullaby For Lagos" feat Quantic, "Chich" and more. ✨✧ Chick Corea/David Holland/Barry AltschulARC ... CD
ECM, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the most outside work ever recorded by Chick Corea – a great session from the post-Circle trio that included Barry Altschul on percussion and Dave Holland on bass! The sound here is in a vast space of dark corners, sharp edges, and some slightly warmer moments – similar to some of Chick's other work as a leader before this album, but a bit more stark overall. Although listed with writing credits, most titles have a strongly improvised feel – quite free, especially the piano parts! Titles include "Ballad For Tillie", "Nefertitti", "Vedana", "Thanatos", and "Games". CD

Sofi HellborgDrumming Is Calling ... CD
Ajabu (Germany), 2008. Used ... $8.99
Great grooves from Sofi Hellborg – a European musician, but one with a deep commitment to Afro Funk grooves! The style here is nicely divergent from Sofi's previous set with Tony Allen – still strongly Afro funky at the roots, but with a bit more emphasis on jazzy passages too – not only Sofi's own work on alto and soprano sax, but also trombone, guitar, and keyboards from group members too. Sofi sings a bit on the record – in sweet tones that are again a nice change from the usual Afro Funk revival record – and the lyrics are often righteous, but without ever going too far over the top. Titles include "Mother Earth", "Maybe I Was Dreaming", "All The Signs", "Drumming Is Calling", "Tell Your Mama", "Cannot Stop To Play", and "Bottledance", which features some great instrumentation on glass bottles! CD

Kinloch NelsonPartly On Time – Recordings 1968 to 1970 ... LP
Tompkins Square, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Sublime solo guitar work from Kinloch Nelson – a figure who's spent decades working as a musician and teacher in upstate New York, but who made these recordings when he was just a pretty young guy! The music here fits in perfectly with some of the archival releases on Tompkins Square – very much in the more underground acoustic side of the 60s – post-folk, and dedicated to unusual tunings – and with a very personal, lyrical quality that almost makes Nelson something of a bridge between the older Takoma Records scene, and the acoustic underground of the 70s. Includes "Pearl St", "Lazin' In My Sleep", "Partly On Time", "Funky Sedan", "Coming Down From The Ceiling", "The Eyes Of The Fair Molly", "Solitudes", "Kittens", "Winnipesaukee Night" and more. ✨✧ Dino Saluzzi/Rosamunde QuartettKultrum ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1998. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Haunting sounds from one of the most overlooked musicians on ECM – bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi, an artist who easily made some of the most compelling work for the label during the 80s! Dino handles all instrumentation here himself – using bandoneon both in traditional ways, and in really experimental modes – and mixing it up with added percussion and flutes, plus just a bit of voice as well – all in a sound with echoes of older South American folk, tinges of European modernism, and a pan-global sensibility that's really unique. Titles include "El Rio Y El Abuelo", "Pasos Que Quedan", "Por El Sol Y Por La Lluvia", "Gabriel Kondor", "Kulturum Pampa", and "Agua De Paz". CD
(Slipcover is not included.)

✨✧ Chelique SarabiaRevolucion Electronica En Musica Venezolana ... LP
Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
They're not lying with the title of this one – as the set's definitely a revolution in Venezuelan music – a very unique album that blends together folkloric elements with 70s electronics, but all in a way that sounds way different than just the sum of its parts! There's some acoustic guitar in the mix, but often used with odd echo – which mixes nicely with the more subtle elements on the electric instrumentation, which is also often abstracted by the production too – so that the whole thing resonates with a beautiful sense of tone that really transforms the whole proceedings! Lyrical melodies mix with well-crafted rhythms – often in a breezy blend that reminds us a lot of some of the cooler European sound library material of the time – but with trippier touches around the edge. Titles include "Maracaibo En La Noche", "El Pajarillo", "Cantos De Mi Tierra", "El Cumaco De San Juan", "Polo Coriano", "Sombra En Los Medanos", "Barlovento", and "Rio Manzanares".
