Gregory Isaacs/Ossie All StarsMr Isaacs (2CD deluxe edition – Leggo Dub plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Earthquake/17 North Parade, 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.99
Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". CD2 features the full album Leggo Dub – related dub material by the Ossie All-Stars – The Revolutionaries working with Ossie Hibbert on some wicked instrumentals that have plenty of core rhythms that never stray too far, while Hibbert makes magic with echo and other slight studio techniques! Titles include "Dubby Dubby", "Winners Dub", "Dub Down Babylon", "Ghetto Dub", "Brooklyn Style, "Leggo Dub", and "Doberman Skank". CD2 also features bonus tracks – "Jump & Pawn" by Clint Eastwood, "CB 200" by Dillinger, "War Of The Stars" by Ossie & The Revolutionaries, "Take A Dip" by Dillinger, and "Lik Her She Gone" by Big Joe. SylkSylk (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Earthquake/Tidal Waves, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
The only album ever issued by Sylk – a southern group with a sound that's tight, but never too slick – nicely indie from production to conception, and very different than other mainstream soul records from the time! The record's part of the great underground tradition of homegrown soul from the early 80s – music that's neither tied to later disco modes, or trying to be electro funk – but which still has some of the best elements of the late 70s firmly in place! Sylk mix together mellower cuts with groovers that are more in a tight funk mode than any sort of disco style – and there's an honesty to the whole thing that really belies their roots in the small scene in Augusta, GA. Titles include "Love Is The Key", "Be Somebody", "Seekin", "Movin On", "I'll Always Come Back To You", "I Just Want To Know Your Name", and "Lost & Lonely". LP, Vinyl record album

13th Floor ElevatorsEaster Everywhere (180 gram pressing) ... LP
International Artists, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
Raw early genius from the 13th Floor Elevators – cut back at a time when the Texas combo were one of the hippest things going in the late 60s American underground! There's lots of sounds here that other cats would copy over the decades – but the record has a gritty brilliance that's way better than any of its many imitators – that kind of unique burst of new ideas and young energy that made psych so wonderful when it first emerged in remarkable moments like this! Roky Erickson is wonderful – and the record will definitely illustrate his genius way better than any later efforts to bear his own name in the lead – and the production is just the right blend of studio tricks and homegrown oddness to make the whole thing electrified throughout. Tracks include "Slip Inside This House", "Slide Machine", "Dust", "Earthquake", "Levitation", "Postures", "Baby Blue", and "Nobody To Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Undisputed TruthCosmic Truth/Higher Than High ... CD
Gordy/Kent (UK), 1975. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 24.98
A pair of late Motown albums from Undisputed Truth – both issued here back to back, as they originally appeared for the label! First up is Cosmic Truth – a fantastic 70s album from Undisputed Truth – and the first to fully feature the new version of the lineup, after the Magictones had been recruited to form the second version of the group! The sound here is even funkier and more guitar-based than before – a fully-realized take on the Norman Whitfield modes that had been brewing up since his late 60s work with The Temptations – almost as tripped-out at times as early 70s Funkadelic – as if Undisputed Truth were being put forth as a Detroit challenge to the George Clinton universe! Production and arrangements are great – very far-reaching at times, with some bigger ideas in the mix – although all the tight funky soul elements that always made these guys so great. Titles include "1990", "Squeeze Me Tease Me", "Earthquake Snake", "Spaced Out", "Lil Red Ridin Hood", "Got To Get Me Some Lovin", and the great cut "UFO's". Higher Than High is a great later Motown effort from the Undisputed Truth – working in a groove that's a bit tighter and more upbeat than before, but still plenty darn great! Norman Whitfield is still very firmly in charge of the group's sound on the record – arranging, producing, and writing most of the cuts on the album – and he's doing a great job of keeping his sound fresh here – not just sticking in the bass-heavy styles of previous years, and instead moving into some fresher territory that has the group continuing to grow nicely. In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the grooves to come on Norman's own Whitfield label – a great batch of well-crafted titles that include "Overload", "Higher Than High", "Poontang", "I Saw YOu When You Met Her", "Help Yourself (second version)", "I'm In The Red Zone", "Boogie Bump Boogie", and "Ma". We've always loved Joe Gibb's productions, especially his dubs, with Erroll Thompson piloting the mixing desk, and have been waiting for one of the great revive labels to put together a set. ✨✧ Graham Central StationNow Do U Wanta Dance/My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me/Star Walk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s. Used 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of classic late 70s funk records from Larry Graham & Graham Central Station! Now Do U Wanta Dance is their 1977 LP and they're still burning strong here – resisting the temptation to go fully into the disco sound you might guess from the "dance" in the title, and if anything, pulling up the bass-heavy funk even more! The set's got a super-tight feel that's kind of a distillation of the successful Graham Central Station sound of earlier albums, but still comes together perfectly overall – in a mode that's clearly having a huge influence on the rest of west coast funk. They they open up sound up a fair bit on My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me – a set that really feels like it might've influenced Prince pretty strong, given the tightly poppy vibe in the construction of the soul sound. Star Walk has a great, bass heavy funk like the the earlier work – but here he's moving into the solo spotlight a bit more than before, but it's still got an unstoppable Graham Central Station groove! 27 tracks on 2CDs – including "Lead Me On", "Crazy Chicken", "Now Do U Wanta Dance", "Last Train", "Earthquake","Love & Happiness", the tightly stepping groover "Is It Love", which has a great west coast slow funk approach, the P-Funky "Are You Happy","Turn It Out", "Pow", "Boogie Witcha Baby", and "Mr Friend", "Sneaky Freak", "Star Walk", "Foxy Lady", "Tonight", "Scream", and "The Entertainer". Also includes a pair of bonus single edits as bonus tracks! CD

KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet KPM funk from the 70s – a set that features the legendary "Big City Suite" from David Gold, plus 20 other groovers from rare KPM sound library albums of the time! Gold's suite is really great – a hip mix of keyboards, wah wah guitar, and strings – all wrapped together warmly in a portrait of a city from a variety of angles, in a variety of moods. The work's almost an update of 50s city-symphony albums, but is put together here with a much hipper 70s soundtrack mode – lots of subtle elements that really keep things interesting! Other tracks offer up a mix of jazz, soundtrack, and sound library funk – hand-picked from KPM classics like Jazzrock, Synthesis, Sounds Of The Times, Trendsetters, and other legendary albums – really packed in here with a huge amount of cuts that are totally great! Titles include "Good Vibrations" and "Trial Of Strength" by Keith Mansfield, "Testing Time" by David Lindup, "Four O'Clock Earthquake" and "Smokey Joe's Dilemma" by John Cameron, "Watchful Eye" by James Clarke, "Sunshine Special" and "Get Ready Get Set Fly" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Open Roads" by Nick Ingman, "Go Getter" by John Cameron, "City Airscape" and "City Police" by David Gold, and "Lap Of Honour" by Clive Hicks. VariousJazz Toys – An Inspiring Selection Of European Soul, Jazz & Fusion Grooves From The Past ... CD
Perfect Toy (Germany), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $0.99
Don't let the title or the bunny on the cover put you off, because there's nothing toy-like about these tunes – and the package is an excellent batch of rare German grooves put together with the same high level as other collections on the Perfect Toy label! Ex-Spinning Wheel mainman Marcus Hacker put together this one – and the grooves remind us a lot of some of the older SW sound library compilations – all awash in flavors borrowed from Brazilian bossa, American funk, Brit easy, and other genres – remodeled into a German economic miracle mode by a variety of jazz and studio players! The sound here is really really fresh – funky, but with lots of odd little touches and unusual instrumentation – a bit in the In Kraut mode, but more direct overall, and slightly less kitschy (although the set does have a few charming moments in that respect.) A number of tracks have vocals – some sung, some scatted – and titles include "Photographs" by Swegas, "Cameleon" by Kaate Frits Quartet, "Drift" by Orchester Heinz Kiessling, "Soul Samba" by The Earthquakers, "Guarana Guaranar" by Grupo Veneno, "Sara" by The Voices, "I Mimi" by Idili Tsaliki, and "Memories Of Yesterday" by Othella Dallas.
