✨✧ Ernie HinesElectrified ... LP
We Produce/Stax, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An underground set from early 70s Stax Records – the only set cut back in the day by Ernie Hines – a really great singer who works here with a blend of southern soul and sweet harmony modes! The album's got a pretty laidback vibe, which is great – almost in the same space as The Temprees, with an undercurrent of super-dope arrangements, and Ernie's lead vocals right up front in the mix! There's a bit of strings on the set, and most tracks have some sort of harmony support behind Hines' lead – a vibe that's a bit different, and maybe almost more east coast than the usual Stax set. Arrangements are by Wardell Quezquerque, Dale Warren, Lester Snell, and Tom Nixon – and both The Bar Kays and The MGs play on the record. Titles include the sample classic "Our Generation" – plus "Electrified Love", "Sugar Plum", "Change Is Gonna Come", "Your Love (Is All I Need)", and "Come On Y'All". LP, Vinyl record album

Vince AndrewsLove, Oh Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Gerard/P-Vine (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $14.99
A great little batch of jazzy soul by Vince Andrews – a vocalist and sax player from Columbus, Ohio – which is where he recorded this obscure early 80s set, a record with a vibe that's maybe more 70s overall! The record has a great little groove – kind of that Charles Earland stepping vibe that we love on his late 70s Muse recordings – supported by some sweet organ work from Bobby Floyd, a player we don't know at all, but who really shines here! Most of the cuts just feature a trio – with Matt Wagner on drums, and Vince on alto, tenor, soprano sax, and flute – working through mostly original material that includes "Love Oh Love", "Akila", "The One Who Needs You", "Being With You", and "Vibrating With Vince". CD features a bonus alternate take of "Love Oh Love". CD

✨✧ Jenny BurtonIn Black & White ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The first album by 80s dancefloor soul diva Jenny Burton – a gleaming, synthesizer and computer grooves laden effort that may have aged pretty quickly after it's initial release – but sounds pretty sweet today and stands out for its embrace of both ultra modern electro soul sounds and chart ready hooks! Jenny's can really belt out the soulful vocals, and the sounds put together by producer/one man band John Robie bring in elements of early hip hop and synthy pop funk – with drum machines, Moogs, synthesizers, keys, and guitar. Titles include "Rock Steady", "Small Rewards", "Players", "You'll Never Come Again", "Remember What You Like", "All The Time/Time" and "Vena Cava". CD

GenesisDuke (180 gram white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, 1980. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
An overlooked gem from Genesis – a record that maybe forms a perfect bridge between their early concept years and the tighter mode that drove them into the 80s – and a set that really has the trio version of the group finding their way forward! There's some of the catchiness of Abacab to come, but there's also more of a sense of scope – that long form instrumental exploration that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks continued from the early years – honed into more focus, and driven by the increasingly strong drum talents of Phil Collins! Phil's a few years away from being an MTV figure here – and is instead more of a proud progger, finding a way to bring things into tighter energy – and really balance the whole thing beautifully. Titles include the hits "Turn It On Again" and "Misunderstanding" – balanced with "Duke's Travels", "Dutchess", "Behind The Lines", "Heathaze", and "Cul De Sac". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible String BandIncredible String Band/5000 Spirits Or Layers Of The Onion/Hangman's Beautiful Daughter ... CD
Elektra/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 19.99
Important early work from The Incredible String Band – three albums in one great package! First up is the first album from the Incredible String Band – a real treasure from the trio of Clive Palmer, Mike Heron and Robin Williamson – who each sing and write, and bring unique charm to their own material! The sound is very folksy, and really lives up to their name – mostly just music on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar – served up in a blend that both echoes British traditional styles, yet paves the way for new expressions in the acid folk generation to come – especially on the group's original material. The group are really wonderful at this point – with a sound that drew them wide acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic – and titles include "Maybe Someday", "October Song", "When The Music Starts To Play"", "Schaeffer's Jig", "Womankind", "The Tree", "Whistle Tune", "Dandelion Blues", "Good As Gone", and "Footsteps Of The Heron". Next is 5000 Spirits – a UK psychedelic folk gem that finds the group challenging conventions across the board – both artful and inviting, it's wonderful stuff! At this point, Clive Palmer had left, and Mike Heron and Robin Williamson contribute lead vocals with the additional vocalist Licorice also taking lead on a few tunes, the sound is fleshed out with more accompaniment and a rich warmth on a bevy of instruments – guitar, sitar, bowed gimbri, finger cymbals, tamboura, oud, rattles, flute, bass and piano. Includes the lovely and oft-covered "The First Girl I Loved", plus "Chinese White", "No Sleep Blues", "Painting Box", "The Eyes Of Fate", "The Hedgehog's Song", "You Know What I Could Be", "Gently Tender", "Way Back In The 1960s" and more. On Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, The Incredible String Band are paired down to the core duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson – using the studio as a most impressive adjunct member of the group at this point! This is an extremely talented pair – each playing myriad instruments – sitar, organ, guitar, hammer dulcimer, harpsichord, gimbri, whistle, pipe, oud, mandolin, mouth harps and more. Previous vocal collaborator Licorice sings on one song, and Dolly Collins and David Snell contribute flute organ, piano and harp – but the main duos incredible way of layering their magic with multitracking in the studio the real masterstroke of the effort. Titles include "Koeoaddi There", "Witch's Hat", "The Water Song", "Swift As The Wind", "Nightfall", "Waltz Of The New Moon", "Three Is A Green Crown" and more. CD

Billy Jones & The StarsLove Is Gonna Rain On You (180 gram translucent yellow vinyl) (2020 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A spectacular soul album from Holland – but one that's got a much more American groove than some other overseas records of its type! The cuts all feel as if they could have been lifted from indie sides of the east coast scene of the early 70s – and Billy shines beautifully both on the mellow ballads and uptempo numbers – the former of which have a sweet soul/harmony vibe, the latter of which take things into fast funk territory of the pre-disco years! The whole thing's great – a beautiful balance between funky groovers and laidback soul – and titles include "Funky Monkey Monkey", "Thank You", "Save All My Lovin", "Feelin Good", "All My Brothers Are Clean", "Love Is Gonna Rain On You", "Look Out Baby Here I Come", and "Message From A Black Man". ✨✧ Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... CD
Stones Throw, 2004. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/FourmenonlyModern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/Fourmenonly – Complete Recordings (Trees/Position 2000/Fourmenonly Vol 1/Science Fiction Stories) (3CD set) ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... $38.99 42.99
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

Jaye P MorganJust You Just Me ... LP
RCA, 1958. Very Good ... $11.99
Swinging early vocals from Jaye P Morgan – a set that reminds us that she had a lot more to offer back in the day than her frequent appearances on The Gong Show! The approach here is straight, jazzy, and plenty darn groovy – arranged by Marion Evans with a nice sense of swing, and instrumentation that's definitely at the top shelf level of the late 50s RCA vocal scene. Morgan's probably best on the upbeat numbers, where her bubbly style really shines nicely – but she's also pretty good on the mellower ballads, which she takes with a breathy sound that matches her sexy image on the cover. Titles include "Day By Day", "Why Shouldn't I", "The Song Is You", "You Are My Lucky Star", "Just You Just Me", "As Time Goes By", and "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere". LP, Vinyl record album

Milton NascimentoClube Da Esquina ... CD
EMI (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". PilotPilot – The Albums (From The Album Of The Same Name/Second Flight/Morin Heights/Two's A Crowd/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". CD features lots of related bonus tracks – including "Pamela", "Ra Ta Ta", "Just Let Me Be", "Maniac", "Us", "Lady Luck", "No Ties No Strings", "Are You In Love", "Just A Smile", and "Stop & Let Go". Baden PowellA Vontade ... CD
Elenco/Universal (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Killer early bossa by Baden Powell – a jazzy little gem that still shines brightly after all these years! This early album is a stripped-down batch of tunes that features Baden on acoustic guitar, backed by a small percussion combo that really keeps things lively – plus some additional flute that dances beautifully along with the grooves! The tunes are at once bright and breezy, but also have a darkness that makes Baden's tunes different from some of the other bossa nova guitar work of the era – a spooky specter of deeper feelings that pushes the album past the simple space of instrumental musings. All the signs of his later greatness are firmly planted, even at this young stage – as you'll hear on the album's list of titles that include "O Astronauta", "Candomble", "Samba Do Aviao", "Sorongaio", and "Conversa De Poeta". Diana RossDiana Ross Live At Caesars Palace ... LP
Motown, 1974. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A fantastic early demonstration of the solo powers of Diana Ross – a live date from Vegas, and one that has her commanding the stage not just as a singer of soul music, but as a female star ready to rival the talents of any of her contemporaries in the mainstream! Ross shines here with a brilliant brightness right from the start – working with a large ensemble that echoes all her best Motown roots, but which also pushes things out in fuller, more vibrant modes too – as Diana runs through tracks that include old soul favorites, jazz standards, and even some surprising choices from the charts – at a level that's filled with poise, class, and soul throughout. Titles include a great "Supremes Medley", plus "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Corner Of The Sky", "I Love You Porgy", "My Man", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and a "Lady Sings The Blues Medley" with titles from the Billie Holiday songbook. Thievery CorporationSymphonik ... LP
Eighteenth Street Lounge, 2020. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
The title here certainly gets it right – as the album marks a huge new step for Thievery Corporation – the first full record in which the group works with orchestral accompaniment – a move that's maybe long overdue, given how much these guys were initially influenced by older soundtracks and instrumental records! The use of orchestrations is wonderful, and really helps breathe new life into the duo's music – giving them a richness that we never would have expected, and maturing them far past some of their earlier modes – which were appealing, but never this complex or satisfying. As usual in recent years, there's a huge host of guests on the record – artists who include Puma, Frank Orrall, Natalia Clavier, Elin Melgarejo, Mr Lif, Shana Halligan, and Lou Lou Ghelichakhani – on songs that are reworkings of older Thievery tracks, taken into new territory with the orchestrations. Titles include "Ghetto Matrix", "Until The Morning", "Love Has No Heart", "Marching The Hate Machines", "Weapons Of Distraction", "The Forgotten People", and "Sweet Tides". LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $16.99
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99
Fantastic sounds from the grittiest years of the 45rpm single – music that's so mad, so strange, it really defies description! All the cuts here are presented in conjunction with the long-running Fool's Paradise radio show on WFMU – a longtime champion of all things weird and wild – always reminding us that in the glory days of vinyl, there was so much stuff set to record that really defied any sort of description – sounds that usually were quite far from the charts as well! The music here maybe has bits of R&B, early rock, jazz, and exotica – but the end results are all pretty darn unique – and often handled with both a sense of humor, and a great ear for unusual studio tricks and gimmicks. Titles include "Chinese Rock & Roll" by the Flock Rocker, "Shawnee" by The Premiers, "Charlie & The Bank Job" by Al Katraz, "Umh Uh Baby" by Kind Sid, "Knock Her Down" by The Orbits, "The Last Meal" by Hurricane Harry, "500 Pound Canary" by Jules Blattner, "The Goatee's Got To Go" by Dick Summers, "Mad" by Bobby Borda Five, "Pulp Wood Charley" by Wee Willie & The Soulettes, and "Pal Mal Rock" by Arnie Ginsberg. A massive overview of the best years of Krautrock – that fresh wave of new music that emerged on the West German scene at the end of the 60s, and carried the nation forward strongly all through the 70s! The set definitely begins at the beginning – as early cuts almost echo some of the blues rock that was bubbling up in the UK and US, before quickly moving into some of the modes that are more familiarly associated with Krautrock – including inspirations from jazz and improvised music, avant electronics, and freewheeling instrumentation that had a huge impact on many artists for decades to come! This 2CD set is done in the best Bear Family tradition – with a huge booklet of notes and images – although we should also say that the notes are in German, but still have enough helpful bits that you'll be able to get the gist when needed. 22 tracks in all – and titles include "Redskin" by Jane, "Souls Married To The Wind" by Parzival, "Cappuccino" by Abacus, "A Young Man's Gash (part 2)" by Gash, "La Leyla" by Ramses, "Chub Chub Cherry" by Silberbart, "Ants" by Tomorrow's Gift, "Rock N Roll Preacher" by Atlantis, "Keep On Running" by Cravinkle, "Mesentery" by Ikarus, "Schones Babylon" by AR & Machines, and "Big City" by Thirsty Moon. Because (France), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 29.99
It's Wu-Tang's world, and we just live in it – as we're reminded again by this great series of older funky cuts sampled by the group! As with other volumes, most of these numbers emerged at some point or another in Wu-Tang and related productions – but this set presents the full original songs, unmixed – a pretty damn great blend of 70s funky soul on its own, even if you've never had an ear for hip hop! Artists are a great mix of soul stars and underground legends – and titles include "What The World Needs Now" by Carla Thomas, "I Get High" by Freda Payne, "Get Myself High" by The Dynamics, "That's All Right With Me" by Esther Phillips, "Intimate Friends" by Eddie Kendricks, "Ain't Got The Love Of One Girl" by The Ambassadors, "Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do" by Betty Wright, "Our Generation" by Ernie Hines, "I'm Your Mechanical Man" by Jerry Butler, "Have Mercy On Me" by East St Louis Gospelettes, "Here I Go Again" by Jean Plum, "Let's Do It Again" by Staple Singers, "Only One Can Win" by The Sylvers, "Don't Make The Good Girls Go Bad" by Della Humphrey, "Dead" by Carolyn Sullivan, "Trouble" by Brenton Wood, "Float On (single edit)" by Floaters, "I Wish You Were Here" by Al Green, and "A Good Man Is Gone" by Monk Higgins & Alex Brown. Classic breaks – all the way through – the kind of sharp funky nuggets that have had a rich new life, thanks to their use in hip hop and club tracks in recent years! Atlantic, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock

✨✧ PattoGive It All Away – The Albums 1970 to 1973 (Patto/Hold Your Fire/Roll Em Smoke Em/Monkey's Bum) (4CD set) ... CD
Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four full albums from Patto – presented here in a complete box set! First up is the self-titled Patto – the debut album from a group who were never huge at the time, but who've gone onto become one of the best-remembered acts from the Vertigo Records scene – thanks to the sound of this amazing debut! The record is extremely hard to peg – it's definitely got some jazz inspiration in the way the songs are put together – especially since group member Ollie Halsall uses some great vibes – but the whole thing's hardly a jazz rock set at all – as the tunes are maybe more open at times, or a bit gritty at others – always topped by the unique vocals of Mike Patto. The record is both freewheeling and down to earth at the same time – a hard thing to pull off – and titles include "The Man", "Hold Me Back", "Time To Die", "Red Glow", and "Government Man". Hold Your Fire is a really great second set from Patto – a record that maybe tips the balance more strongly towards guitar sounds than the previous, but one that still preserves all their really unique sense of arrangements and songwriting! Vocalist Mike Patto is kind of a lost legend from early 70s rock – a singer who might have given some of the bigger Brit names a run for their money, had he ever gotten a chance to really shine in the spotlight. But it's also that suppressed fame that makes his presence on this record so great – a completely unselfconscious approach that fits in both with the grittier numbers and some of the more open, chromatic tunes. Titles include "Hold Your Fire", "Give It All Away", "See You At The Dance Tonight", and "How's Your Father". Next is Roll Em Smoke Em – maybe the funkiest record ever cut by Mike Patto and crew – a set that's got a nicely loose, unbridled feel – and plenty of funky drums and percussion from John Halsey! The group have really hit their prime here – so much so, they almost don't need any larger concepts or ideas to guide them – and are just comfortable to get together and work out some nicely rough-edged ideas – with Patto himself sounding maybe a bit more blue-eyed soulful/rocker, and Ollie Halsell kicking up his guitar with a lot more fuzz. Titles include "Flat Footed Woman", "Singing The Blues On Reds", "Loud Green Song", "Turn Turtle", and "Peter Abraham". Last up is Monkey's Bum – material that was intended to become the fourth album from Patto – an excellent UK group who never fully got their due! Patto have a great sound that's kind of like higher progressive rock ideas taken down into bluesier territory – with an earthiness that maybe a few key contemporaries got right – maybe Traffic or Procol Harum – and, like both of those groups, one that was capable of really hitting things right on the nose with a special sound that was all their own. Mike Patto only got better as a singer as the years went on, bringing more soulful phrasing into his lyrics – which is also echoed by some of the keyboard and rhythm work here, but never in a way that's too slavishly blues-rock or white boy soul, and certainly with the right sort of complexity to warrant the group's attention by Island in the early 70s. Titles include "Hedyob", "My Days Are Numbered", "Sugar Cube 1967", "I Need You", "Good Friend", and "Get Up & Dig It" – plus a great cover of "Last Night I Had A Dream". CD set features the bonus tracks "Beat The Drum", "Bad News", and "Hanging Rope". CD

✨✧ Eddie HollandIt Moves Me – The Complete Recordings 1958 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of all the great and rare material Eddie Holland cut as solo singer in the late 50s and early 60s – including the incredible early Motown material, plus tracks he cut for Mercury, Kudo, Tamla and United Artists! Of course Eddie Holland is best remembered for uber-legendary work as producer, composer and arranger with the Holland-Dozier-Holland super soul unit – for damn good reason, but it's his early work as singer is way too strong to be considered a mere footnote to his greater legacy. Many of the cuts were written and produced by Berry Gordy, along with numbers written and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, some recorded more famously by later acts, so what you truly have here is the foundation for great things to come – it's beautiful stuff that shines brightly in its own light. Eddie's a solid singer and the songs are terrific, formative stuff that's a pivotal bridge from earlier R&B to massive soul. 56 tracks on 2CDs: "Little Miss Ruby", "Will You Love Me", "Just A Few More Days", "It's Not Too Late", "Just Ain't Enough Love", "Brenda", "Baby Shake", "Magic Mirror", "If Cleopatra Took A Chance", "Action Speaks Louder than Words", "Bashful Kind", "Too Late To Cry", "Happy Go Lucky", "Pretty Little Angel Face", "Day Dreamer", "Rain And Thunder", "I Like Everything About You", "Happy Days" and many more. This set goes deeper than any compilation we've seen of Eddie's recordings, too, with a number of previously unissued Mercury recordings. CD

Arista, Late 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful collection of early work from Jeff Lorber – indie cuts from his years on the Inner City label, brought together here as a single LP! The material is really classic material from the Jeff Lorber group of the late 70s – a sweet fusion set with lots of soulful edges, but never a watered-down approach! The groove's much different than you'd expect from Lorber's later work – and the album's got lots of nice edges in the mix, even when things are mellow – a stripped-down sense of instrumentation and production that's a great reminder of how strong jazz like this could be before smoother cliches crept in to smother it! Jeff plays acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, moog, and Oberheim four voice – and the rest of the group keeps time with a lightly soulful bounce, and some nicely peppered solos on alto and flute. The album features guest work by Chick Corea and Joe Farrell – and titles originally appeared on the albums Soft Space and Jeff Lorber Fusion – 14 tracks that include "The Samba", "Black Ice", "Curtains", "Swing Funk", "Cousin Stu", "Terry's Lament", "Chinese Medicinal Herbs", "River Winds", "Funky Gospel", "Katherine", and "Glisten". ✨✧ Valerie SimpsonExposed/Valerie Simpson (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown/Caroline (UK), 1971/1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two solo Valerie Simpson gems – back to back on a single CD! The Exposed album is a classic early bit of soul from the Ashford & Simpson team – even though the record is billed under the name of Valerie Simpson as a solo act! Valerie sang all the tracks on the album, but she and Nick produced the record together – in a way that really sets the groundwork for their bigger fame to come in the 70s – but much rootsier overall! Paul Riser handles the arrangements, with that great touch that he was bringing to some of the best Motown work of the early 60s – that sense of expanded styles, but never in a way that just rehashed some of the previous Detroit styles, and instead almost reached for some of the more sophisticated sounds coming from the east coast and Chicago. Dennis Coffey handles the guitar solos, Jack Ashford plays percussion, and Joshie Armstead joins Nick and Valerie on backup vocals. Titles include "Sinner Man", "Can't It Wait Until Tomorrow", "I Don't Need No Help", "World Without Sunshine", and "We Can Work It Out". On the self-titled Valerie Simpson, the singer really shines in the spotlight, on an early solo outing for Motown – not yet paired with Nick Ashford at a vocal level, but still getting plenty of help from her future musical partner on both production and songwriting! The approach here is sometimes a bit more personal than later Ashford & Simpson material – as Valerie really shines on some of the ballads and mellower cuts, then lets loose with a righteous style that points the way at some of the great grooves to come! Includes the groovy "Keep It Coming", plus "Genius 1 & 2", "I Believe I'm Gonna Take This Ride", "Silly, Wasn't I?", and "Drink The Wine". CD also features a bonus single version of "Can't It Wait Until Tomorrow". CD

Sweet early soul from Stevie Wonder – an album that features his young and developing voice on a mixture of Motown soul tunes and pop covers done in a mellow sort of style. The record's still got Stevie's vocals swimming in larger backings and strings – but it does have these amazing breakout moments that really catch us off guard, coming through with a level of soul that's stripped down and lean – and which shines the gem that Stevie would soon become from this rough diamond stage! Good cuts include "Sylvia", "Thank You Love", "My World Is Empty Without You", and the sublime "Hey Love", which is one of Stevie's best cuts ever, and is worth the price of the record alone! A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. Eighteenth Street Lounge, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". CD2 features the full album Leggo Dub – related dub material by the Ossie All-Stars – The Revolutionaries working with Ossie Hibbert on some wicked instrumentals that have plenty of core rhythms that never stray too far, while Hibbert makes magic with echo and other slight studio techniques! A surprisingly nice score, done for a relatively goofy Italian comedy at the start of the 80s – set inside a Chinese restaurant in Rome, and handled with some definite Eastern touches in the instrumentation – but all mixed up in funky cop show sort of backings – almost an early 80s take on territory explored by Lalo Schifrin in Enter The Dragon! Obviously, the elements are a bit inauthentic – but given that the film's a comedy, we'll give them a pass – and note that they make a nice change from some of the more standard modes of Italian films like this of the time. The instrumentation's more 70s than you'd expect from the date of the film – and is usually somewhat warm, even when electric – and the set features a total of nine tracks from the movie – appearing here on vinyl for the first time ever. Beautiful live work from alto saxophonist Carl Magnus Neumann – a Norwegian player with a richly expressive tone and a very fresh groove – working here in a group that's co-led with pianist Christian Reim! Neumann's a player we won't hear often – and he shines wonderfully on this date – stretching out in long, creative lines that are totally great – often slightly poetic and filled with feeling, in rhythms that are quite unusual for the time. The group's a quartet, with Christian Reim on piano, Bjorn Kjellemyr on bass, and Ole Jacob Hansen on drums – and although all players are clearly acquainted with some of the newer ideas in jazz at the time, they also nicely keep things inside on most tracks – with a subtle swing that really suits Neumann's tone. Pure genius from Tangerine Dream – a record that came out right at the start of the 70s, and immediately cemented the group's reputation as one of the most inventive electronic acts of the decade! The tracks are long and spacious here – very much in the territory of some of the group's Krautrock contemporaries, but with more of a sense of openness, and patience – as they never rush things at all, while layering together their unique blends of guitar, organ, percussion, flute, and anything else they can think of – even a coffee machine! Chris Franke handles the electronics, but Steve Schroyder abstracts them with "several echo machines" – while Edgar Froese helps them all remember to keep things tuneful at times. A beautiful live album from a time when saxophonist Bennie Wallace had a mighty nice edge – this raw, raspy quality that really shines through here – thanks to a stripped-down trio setting that features Eddie Gomez on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums! The album's a lot freer at times than some of the earlier tenor trio experiments – but Wallace can also change things up with effortless energy, and slide into a mellower, soulful ballad mode – something that Gomez is especially great at matching. ✨✧ Ike & Tina TurnerWorkin' Together ... LP
Liberty, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nicely pivotal album by Ike & Tina Turner – one that has them still retaining some of the earthiness of earlier years, yet also honing their groove for the crossover audience that was digging them big at the end of the 60s! The best results of this shift is the increasing funk component in their music – a move away from R&B into a tighter 60s groove, one that often featured very strong guitar parts in its best incarnation. The set includes the classic "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter", plus "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", "Let It Be", "Goodbye So Long", "You Can Have It", "The Way You Love Me", "Get Back", and "Workin Together". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing, in fantastic shape!)

✨✧ Gary NumanReplicas ... LP
Beggars Banquet, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The icy hot classic from Gary Numan – post punk synth rock that sounds as amazing as ever! Replicas is one of those albums that's just about perfectly conceived from beginning to end – with guitars adding some harder edged bite, the Moog and synths adding a melodic soul, and vocals from Gary carrying the human electric theme just right – even giving it a near Bowie level sense of character! Tracks include "Are Friends Electric?", "The Machman", "Praying To The Aliens", "Down In The Park", "Replicas", "You Are In My Vision", "When The Machines Rock", "I Nearly Married A Human" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing on Atco. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)
