✨✧ Earl HinesOnce Upon A Time ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite records by Earl Hines – a hip little comeback set, recorded in the mid 60s with an Ellingtonish lineup that includes Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, and Johnny Hodges. Hines' piano is certainly a strong force in the record, but even more delightful is the solid feel of the players overall – working with that complete coherence found in the best 60s sides by Duke, but touched here with some of Hines' sprightly approach to the melody. Titles include "Once Upon A Time", "Black & Tan Fantasy", "You Can Depend On Me", "Hash Brown", and "Fantastic That's You". CD

Johnny Shines, Robert Nighthawk, & OthersDrop Down Mama ... CD
Chess, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... $6.99
Some of the earliest blues ever recorded by the legendary Chess Records – material by a variety of artists caught at the very start of the 50s! The names here aren't as big as those of the stars who would firmly put Chess on the map later in the decade – but the work is a great indication that the Chess brothers were on the right track even in these early days – picking some of the finest talents of the underground, and setting their work to wax! Titles include a few previously unreleased numbers, plus other tracks from older 78s – and titles include "Joliet Blues" and "So Glad I Found You" by Johnny Shines, "Sweet Black Angel" and "Anna Lee" by Robert Nighthawk, "Dark Road" and "You Can't Live Long" by Floyd Jones, "Crying" and "Sad Story" by Blue Smitty, "One Of These Days" by Big Boy Spires, and "Drop Down Mama" by Honey Boy Edwards. Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray BarrettoCharanga Moderna ... LP
Tico, 1962. Very Good+ ... $36.99
Stellar Latin grooves! This album is one of Ray's best from the early 60s, and it's an incredible batch of edgey tracks that far outshines most of his other work from the time! For the record, Ray took the standard Charanga format, and updated it by adding sweet jazzy touches, pushing the percussion to the point where it really dominated the record – coming across with some incredibly dark and sinister rhythms! The record gave Ray his first big hit – "El Watusi" – but the whole thing's as great as that cut, and it's a killer killer record that never lets us down! Other tracks inlcude "Aprieta El Pollo", "La Moderna", "Suelta La Cintura", "Terestia", and "Guajira & Tambo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Tico pressing. Cover has light wear, small seam splits, and a small name in marker on back.)

✨✧ Booker T & The MGsSoul Dressing ... LP
Stax, 1965. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great little record from Booker T and group – often overlooked amidst the range between Green Onions and Melting Pot, but a very strong album of soulful Memphis instrumentals all the way through! Book's organ is bubbling hot, and the band's tight rhythm style works in a perfect laid-back mode to push the group way past the stock grooves of earlier albums – thanks to great work from the rest of the combo too. There's some mighty nice rhythm changes on this one, and a good range of non-pop tunes like "Night Owl Walk", "Chinese Checkers", "Soul Dressing", "Tic Tac Toe", "Outrage", "Home Grown", "Big Train", "Jelly Bread", and "Plum Nellie". LP, Vinyl record album

Jenny BurtonIn Black & White ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
The first album by 80s dancefloor soul diva Jenny Burton – a gleaming, synthesizer and computer grooves laden effort that may have aged pretty quickly after it's initial release – but sounds pretty sweet today and stands out for its embrace of both ultra modern electro soul sounds and chart ready hooks! Jenny's can really belt out the soulful vocals, and the sounds put together by producer/one man band John Robie bring in elements of early hip hop and synthy pop funk – with drum machines, Moogs, synthesizers, keys, and guitar. Titles include "Rock Steady", "Small Rewards", "Players", "You'll Never Come Again", "Remember What You Like", "All The Time/Time" and "Vena Cava". CD

✨✧ CatapillaCatapilla ... LP
Vertigo/Trading Places (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A tremendous debut from a group who've clearly got as many hands at work as the creature from which they take their name – a really deft blend of prog rock, fusion, and some occasional hard rock touches – served up here on two especially nice long tracks that bracket each end of the set! The group features female singer Anna Meek on vocals – but she shines the most on the two shorter tracks on the record – "Promises" and "Tumbleweed" – while the rest of the group jam in a mighty jazz/rock mode, really topping the best of the Brit scene of the period, and living up to the Vertigo Records faith in the group – with tenor from Hugh Eaglestone; soprano, alto, and tenor from Robert Calvert; and tenor, alto, flute, and clarinet from Thierry Reinhardt – a trio of players who make music that's way different, and much jazzier than just the occasional tenorist in a rock group. Graham Wilson provides heavy guitar – and the two long tracks are "Naked Death" and "Embryonic Fusion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Teddy EdwardsInimitable Teddy Edwards ... CD
Xanadu, 1976. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
70s brilliance from tenorist Teddy Edwards – a really overlooked album, and one that marks a great step forward from some of Edwards' better-known material of the 60s! That impeccable tone is still very strongly in place – that Edwards way of blowing smooth, but with a subtle bite, too – and Teddy's also developed this sense of flow that's really special – a difference than the way he played fifteen or twenty years before – with almost a Sonny Criss-like approach that really holds us rapt, even in more subtle moments. The album's beautifully recorded – in that stunning Xanadu label way – and the group's a quartet, with Duke Jordan on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums. Edwards is clearly the start of the show, though – and really shines on titles that include "Sunset Eyes", "Imagination", "One By One", and "Stella By Starlight". CD

Bobby HackettHackett Horn ... LP
Epic, Late 30s/1955. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
The Hackett Horn gets a great spotlight here – in a classic mid 50s LP that pulls together earlier 78s recorded by Bobby at the end of the 30s! Modes are mostly traditional, but Hackett's cornet work really shines throughout – bursting out of mid-sized groups that are often driven by a fair bit of rhythm on guitar from Eddie Condon, and which feature other horn work on saxes, trombone, and trumpet. Titles include "Sunrise Serenade", "Ja-Da", "Embraceable You", "That's How Dreams Should End", and "Doin The New Low Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Sly JohnsonMic Buddah ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2015. Used ... $1.99
That's Sly Johnson – not Syl Johnson, the Chicago soul singer – but this Johnson's definitely got an approach that lives up to the classic soul style of the cover! The music's a wonderful mix of deep soul vocals and contemporary production that owes a fair bit to hip hop as well – the kind of cool, crisp sound we're used to hearing from the American underground – but which comes across equally well here on a set recorded in Paris! There's definitely a few rhymes on the set, but Sly's approach is to sing instead of speak on most numbers – over heavy beats, nicely crispy rhythms, and some sweet wider washes of soulful sounds! The set features guest instrumentation from Erik Truffaz and Magic Malik – but Johnson's clearly the star of the set, and shines wonderfully on tunes that include "Magique", "All The Time", "Les Fleurs Du Mal", "Music", "Wet", "Good Morning", "Simply Beautiful", "Womenarium", and "Nasty Girl". Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A spectacular soul album from Holland – but one that's got a much more American groove than some other overseas records of its type! The cuts all feel as if they could have been lifted from indie sides of the east coast scene of the early 70s – and Billy shines beautifully both on the mellow ballads and uptempo numbers – the former of which have a sweet soul/harmony vibe, the latter of which take things into fast funk territory of the pre-disco years! The whole thing's great – a beautiful balance between funky groovers and laidback soul – and titles include "Funky Monkey Monkey", "Thank You", "Save All My Lovin", "Feelin Good", "All My Brothers Are Clean", "Love Is Gonna Rain On You", "Look Out Baby Here I Come", and "Message From A Black Man". Tony McPhee & FriendsMe & The Devil/I Asked For Water She Gave Me Gasoline ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Two early solo albums from Tony McPhee – one of which is more of a mixed group affair overall! First up is Me & The Devil – fantastic acoustic blues from Tony McPhee – maybe best known as a member of The Groundhogs, but working here in a looser, more stripped-down mode – acoustic guitar, harmonica, and spare rhythms – all of which give Tony plenty of space to stretch out in the lead! As with Alexis Korner during the end of the 60s, McPhee's clearly influenced by older American blues, but is turning the phrasing towards a mode that would be picked up and shifted in just a year or two by bigger groups in the rock world – a Swan Song legacy that includes Led Zeppelin and Bad Company. Yet in in the all-acoustic, very rootsy sound here the approach is very different – and the record also features some equally bluesy vocals by a young Jo-Ann Kelly! Titles include "Elevator Woman", "Duckin & Dodgin", "Same Thing On My Mind", "Broke Down Engine", "Buy You A Diamond Ring", and "You Better Mind". I Asked For Water is a very cool collection of bluesier work from the UK underground at the end of the 60s – a set put together by Tony TS McPhee of The Groundhogs – with work by that group, Brett Marvin & The Thunderbolts, and the Andy Fernbach Connexion – working in different settings, and with other tracks that feature vocals by Jo-Ann Kelly, who you might know from later soul fame – as well as John Lewis, Jim Pitts, and Graham Hines. Yet all work is in a country blues mode – but with phrasing that really points the way towards near-immediate rock transformations of such a sound – on titles that include "Oh Death", "Dust My Blues", "Built My Hopes Too High", "Nervous", "Boogie Woman", and "I'm So Tired". ✨✧ Diana RossDiana Ross Live At Caesars Palace ... LP
Motown, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic early demonstration of the solo powers of Diana Ross – a live date from Vegas, and one that has her commanding the stage not just as a singer of soul music, but as a female star ready to rival the talents of any of her contemporaries in the mainstream! Ross shines here with a brilliant brightness right from the start – working with a large ensemble that echoes all her best Motown roots, but which also pushes things out in fuller, more vibrant modes too – as Diana runs through tracks that include old soul favorites, jazz standards, and even some surprising choices from the charts – at a level that's filled with poise, class, and soul throughout. Titles include a great "Supremes Medley", plus "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Corner Of The Sky", "I Love You Porgy", "My Man", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and a "Lady Sings The Blues Medley" with titles from the Billie Holiday songbook. Eric SidayUltra Sonic Perception ... LP
Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

Thievery CorporationSymphonik ... CD
Eighteenth Street Lounge, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
The title here certainly gets it right – as the album marks a huge new step for Thievery Corporation – the first full record in which the group works with orchestral accompaniment – a move that's maybe long overdue, given how much these guys were initially influenced by older soundtracks and instrumental records! The use of orchestrations is wonderful, and really helps breathe new life into the duo's music – giving them a richness that we never would have expected, and maturing them far past some of their earlier modes – which were appealing, but never this complex or satisfying. As usual in recent years, there's a huge host of guests on the record – artists who include Puma, Frank Orrall, Natalia Clavier, Elin Melgarejo, Mr Lif, Shana Halligan, and Lou Lou Ghelichakhani – on songs that are reworkings of older Thievery tracks, taken into new territory with the orchestrations. Titles include "Ghetto Matrix", "Until The Morning", "Love Has No Heart", "Marching The Hate Machines", "Weapons Of Distraction", "The Forgotten People", and "Sweet Tides". CD

Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Titles include "Presente Grego", "Caboclo", "Pelas Sombras", "O Mapa", "Sylvia", "Karina", "Velho Parente", and "Dedicada A Ela". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice batch of musical nuggets from Chris White – a man who looks pretty mundane on the cover, but who really shines here in a selection of solo work done after his famous years in The Zombies! As with previous volumes, there's a nicely expansive vibe to the music – post-Zombies, post-Argent, but with lots of the elements that made White's work with both groups so great! Rod Argent is part of a great lineup of guests – and Chris did a number of these songs as collaborations with others – in a set list that includes "Man Go Find A Woman", "Loving You", "Up Against The Wall Again", "Can't Seem To Fall In Love", "Celebration", "Out Through The Stars", and "Your Heart Is Mine". A really great addition to some of the collections of work from the cold wave generation – a package that features some rare tracks from bigger names, which have never appeared before on vinyl – stacked alongside rare gems from some of the more obscure artists of the time! As you'd guess from the "synth" in the title, the music here is heavy on electronics – particularly the spare, stark sounds of those initial post-punk years – a time when groups, especially British ones, were bringing a new sort of energy to keyboards, basslines, and drum machines – creating a new groove that went on to inspire great changes in the mainstream. Titles include "4JG" by Human League, "Stranger (demo)" by Clan Of Xymox, "Alternate Music For The Hindenberg Lounge" by Richard Bone, "Infinity Sign" by Stephen Huss, "Alles Ist Gewinn" by Im Namen Des Volkes, "Hybrid C" by Chris & Cosey, "Sewing Machine" by Batang Frisco, "Detector Martenot" by Sociedades En Tetra Brick, and "Dias Cortas (live)" by Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99 39.99
A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. Folkways, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
A wonderful collection of early electronic music – issued by the less-high tech Folkways label, but every bit as compelling as similar collections from bigger labels at the time! Most of the work was composed in the 50s and early 60s, and is from the Electronic Music Studio at the University of Toronto – one of the key academic outposts for the style in its pre-commercial years. Composers include Myron Schaffer, Arnold Walter, Harvey Olnick, and Hugh Le Caine – all working in weird tones and sounds that remind us a lot of the best early work of Pierre Henry. There's some great tracks, including "The Orgasmic Opus", "Dripsody", "Inferno", "Noesis", "Summer Idyll", "Collage", and "Pinball" – which features only sounds from pinball machines! CD

P-Vine (Japan), Early 2010s. New Copy ... $24.99
Jazzy grooves from the global underground – all brought together in a sweet set of tracks for the Free Soul series! Despite the "urban jazz" in the title, the sound here isn't the smooth jazz you might expect – and instead these tracks are mostly small label numbers that are hipper than usual, often with a blend of instrumentation and vocals that really shows the more forward-thinking side of the contemporary underground! ✨✧ Eddie HollandIt Moves Me – The Complete Recordings 1958 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of all the great and rare material Eddie Holland cut as solo singer in the late 50s and early 60s – including the incredible early Motown material, plus tracks he cut for Mercury, Kudo, Tamla and United Artists! Of course Eddie Holland is best remembered for uber-legendary work as producer, composer and arranger with the Holland-Dozier-Holland super soul unit – for damn good reason, but it's his early work as singer is way too strong to be considered a mere footnote to his greater legacy. Many of the cuts were written and produced by Berry Gordy, along with numbers written and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, some recorded more famously by later acts, so what you truly have here is the foundation for great things to come – it's beautiful stuff that shines brightly in its own light. Eddie's a solid singer and the songs are terrific, formative stuff that's a pivotal bridge from earlier R&B to massive soul. 56 tracks on 2CDs: "Little Miss Ruby", "Will You Love Me", "Just A Few More Days", "It's Not Too Late", "Just Ain't Enough Love", "Brenda", "Baby Shake", "Magic Mirror", "If Cleopatra Took A Chance", "Action Speaks Louder than Words", "Bashful Kind", "Too Late To Cry", "Happy Go Lucky", "Pretty Little Angel Face", "Day Dreamer", "Rain And Thunder", "I Like Everything About You", "Happy Days" and many more. This set goes deeper than any compilation we've seen of Eddie's recordings, too, with a number of previously unissued Mercury recordings. CD

✨✧ Phyllis HymanCan't We Fall In Love Again ... LP
Arista, 1981. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Phyllis Hyman's nicely balanced here between the two key sides of her early career at its best – working with straight soul production from Chuck Jackson, and slightly more complicated grooves handled by Norman Connors! The pair really bring a nice sense of balance to the record, and in a way the set may well be one of the deepest that Hyman cut during the 80s – a set that avoids some of the too-classy or too-contemporary modes that later held back her vocals a bit – and which instead goes for all the warmth and sensual soul that first made Phyllis rise to fame during the 70s! There's a gentle glow to the record that really shines through – a sense that even in the studio, working for a label like Arista, Phyllis Hyman could work with the same deep spirits as the more righteous albums of her youth. Titles include "Can't We Fall In Love Again", "I Ain't Asking", "Sunshine In My Life", "Don't Tell Me, Tell Her", and "Just Another Face In The Crowd". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". Warner, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last major album from Sly Stone – and a great little set that's still very much at the top of his funky soul game! The groove's a bit different than early Family Stone years, but still has a collaborative funky feel that's so much stronger than some of the stiffer efforts on the market at the time – proof that doing things with the right sort of live and lively energy still beats a whole roomful of drum machines and keyboards! Stone's got a way of providing these slinky inflections on his lyrics – sexing up the grooves even more than the instrumentation – and backing from straighter soul singers hole things in place with an old school vibe. Bobby Lyle plays a bit of keyboards on the set – and titles include "Who In the Funk Do You Think You Are", "Sylvester", "We Can Do It", "LOVINU", "One Way", and "High Y'All" – plus one of weirder covers of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" you're ever likely to hear! Prelude, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A well-done set from Barbara Mason – one that's light years from her earlier soul work, and which takes her strongly into more mature territory! The approach is a bit Philly disco, a bit mellower soul – and the more laidback cuts actually work the best – bubbling along like a gentler take on the Miami sounds at TK Records – produced by Weldon McDougal with some slight deeper soul touches at times. Barbara really shines on these mellow steppers – the great "It Was You Boy", "More Of You", "Darling Come Back Home", and the excellent title cut "I Am Your Woman, She Is Your Wife", Barbara's latest entry into the Barbara/Shirley answer song cycle. A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". CD features lots of related bonus tracks – including "Pamela", "Ra Ta Ta", "Just Let Me Be", "Maniac", "Us", "Lady Luck", "No Ties No Strings", "Are You In Love", "Just A Smile", and "Stop & Let Go". A massive overview of the best years of Krautrock – that fresh wave of new music that emerged on the West German scene at the end of the 60s, and carried the nation forward strongly all through the 70s! The set definitely begins at the beginning – as early cuts almost echo some of the blues rock that was bubbling up in the UK and US, before quickly moving into some of the modes that are more familiarly associated with Krautrock – including inspirations from jazz and improvised music, avant electronics, and freewheeling instrumentation that had a huge impact on many artists for decades to come! A slinky electric score from the great Lallo Gori – an Italian composer we know mostly from earlier work on westerns and horror films – but who really shines here on a sex comedy from 1976! The music is heavy on keyboards – although we're not sure we can tell you which ones – as Lallo's often got them working with all sorts of waves and inflections, in a way that's very moogy – even if the sounds aren't always what you'd hear from a moog! Most songs are pretty tuneful, with these jaunty little keyboard lines – and some get a bit slower and more erotic, but in ways that clearly soon open up to more comedic moments. Tunes have a nice sense of variety, but the album's also very unified too – and the CD features 23 tracks in all. CD

A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

All the cuts here are presented in conjunction with the long-running Fool's Paradise radio show on WFMU – a longtime champion of all things weird and wild – always reminding us that in the glory days of vinyl, there was so much stuff set to record that really defied any sort of description – sounds that usually were quite far from the charts as well! The music here maybe has bits of R&B, early rock, jazz, and exotica – but the end results are all pretty darn unique – and often handled with both a sense of humor, and a great ear for unusual studio tricks and gimmicks. Titles include "Chinese Rock & Roll" by the Flock Rocker, "Shawnee" by The Premiers, "Charlie & The Bank Job" by Al Katraz, "Umh Uh Baby" by Kind Sid, "Knock Her Down" by The Orbits, "The Last Meal" by Hurricane Harry, "500 Pound Canary" by Jules Blattner, "The Goatee's Got To Go" by Dick Summers, "Mad" by Bobby Borda Five, "Pulp Wood Charley" by Wee Willie & The Soulettes, and "Pal Mal Rock" by Arnie Ginsberg. Johnny ShinesStanding At The Crossroads (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Testament, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 44.99
Johnny Shines isn't standing at the crossroads at the same time as Robert Johnson, but he's still sounding pretty darn great here – recording this stripped-down set in Cali in 1970, with just his own guitar alongside his vocals! Shines is maybe best known for his Chicago recordings of the postwar years – but the sound here is in a style that actually goes back farther than that, and recalls the modes that Johnny first used when picking up the guitar in the early 30s – a time in which he also crossed paths with Johnson, given a tribute here in the approach of the record. Titles include "Standing At The Crossroads", "My Rat", "Don't Take A Country Woman", "Kind Hearted Woman", "Baby Sister Blues", and "Drunken Man's Prayer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Justin Hines & The DominosJezebel (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A nice heavy platter from former Treasure Isle star Justin Hines and his backing group the Dominos, featuring production by Jack Ruby and the backing of the Black Disciples band, the team that helped Burning Spear craft some of his best roots albums. While Hinds had a rawer, less polished approach to his own singing, and the vocal harmonies of the Dominos followed suit, that's what makes this set stand out from the rest of the pack Island was recruiting at the time, and the Black Disciples craft some tough rhythms for a great mid 70s roots side. Includes "Fire", "Prophecy", a nice recut of his earlier hit "Carry go Bring Home", "Dip And Fall Back", "Natty Take Over" and "What You Don't Know". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BeatlesRevolver ... CD
Apple/EMI, 1966. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! The album's got some great early psych in spots, offset with wonderfully mature and sweet lyrics on the love songs – cross-cut with a bit of witty social commentary too! Tracks include "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "Love You To", "Here There & Everywhere", "She Said She Said", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "For No One". CD

Peven EverettLatest Craze Part 1 ... CD
Studio Confession, 2005. Used ... $5.99
Sweet homespun space soul by wunderkind Peven Everett – transcending the neo soul scene into a hugely grooving world of his own! As with the best of his other records, Peven's way of spiraling a fairly basic groove into something HUGE is nothing short of amazing. The tunes here have a similar approach to D'Angelo at his best, in the way he rolls the mood into a totally hypnotic trance – but where D'Angelo rolls and pops like grit and grease, Peven shines brightly and shoots straight up into the stars! Pev handles nearly all of the instrumentation, vocals and production – from trippy, soulful electronic ear candy, to some sweet acoustic guitar accompaniment and backing vocals. Amazing stuff – the kid really is a homespun soul genius! 15 tracks in all, including "Love This Way", "Latest Craze", "Ghetto", "Get What You Got", "Don't Go", "Street Walker", "Dillusional", and "Everything I Could". Terry GibbsTake It From Me ... LP
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
A really nice little session from Terry Gibbs – a rare one-off album for Impulse, and a straight jazz record that stands out from some of Terry's more gimmick-oriented albums of the 60s! Gibbs plays the vibes beautifully here – hitting with this sense of touch that really shines through – a really personal element that grabs us almost more than on earlier albums. The group's got a light, easygoing swing – one that really lets Terry take the lead at most points – and players include Kenny Burrell on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. There's a few nice whimsical numbers on the set – showing Terry's (and the 60s in general) trend towards using the vibes in new ways and for new grooves – and titles include "Oge", "El Fatso", "Take It From Me", "Gee Dad It's A Deagan", and "8 LBs 10 oz". LaurneaI Remember (UK pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Erasound/Dome (UK), 2003. Used ... $6.99
Beautiful work from Laurnea – some of her best ever! The set's got a polish and precision that we've never heard in her work before – a bold leap forward with a sound that really puts her at the forefront of the current soul underground. The album's a fiercely collaborative effort, and Laurnea works with a range of different artists from track to track – including India Arie, Angela Johnson, Nathaniel Burgess, and Davinia – somehow managing to bring out the best elements of all the guests, while still keeping a really unified sound. There's lots of strong acoustic touches on the best songs – creating an earthiness that offsets some of the smoother styles of earlier albums, and giving the album a real trademark sound. Titles include "I Remember", "Doin It For Me", "This Is The Last Song", "No Shame", "One Knight Stand", "Ain't Nothing Wrong", "Who I Am", and "Love Peace". UK version features the bonus tracks "Free Your Mind" and "Sunshine"! CD

Carl M Neumann/Christian Reim QuartetLive At Molde International Jazz Festival 1976 ... LP
Jazzaggression (Finland), New Copy ... About November 15, 2020 (delayed)
Beautiful live work from alto saxophonist Carl Magnus Neumann – a Norwegian player with a richly expressive tone and a very fresh groove! Neumann's a player we don't really know much at all – but he shines wonderfully on this date – stretching out in long, creative lines that are totally great – often slightly poetic and filled with feeling, in rhythms that are quite unusual for the time. The group's a quartet, with Christian Reim on piano, Bjorn Kjellemyr on bass, and Ole Jacob Hansen on drums – and although all players are clearly acquainted with some of the newer ideas in jazz at the time, they also nicely keep things inside on most tracks – with a subtle swing that really suits Neumann's tone. Titles include "Hippie", "Farvel", "I Mean You", "Den Fandenivoldske", and "Diplomatologi". LP, Vinyl record album

John Surman & Jack DeJohnetteAmazing Adventure Of Simon Simon ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
John Surman's a player who always shines brightly in any sort of a duet setting – as you'll easily hear in this early 80s session cut with drummer Jack DeJohnette! The work has a slightly composed, slightly improvised feel – with Surman on soprano, baritone sax, bass clarinet, and synth – and DeJohnette on his usual drums, plus congas and a bit of electric piano. Most numbers have a relatively loose structure, but still a strongly melodic pulse overall – and Surman's ability to bring new sounds, moods, and tones to a set like this is one of the key aspects that makes the record great! Titles include "The Buccaneers", "Kentish Hunting", "The Pilgrim's Way", "Nestor's Saga", and "A Fitting Epitaph". CD

Bennie WallaceLive At The Public Theater (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
A beautiful live album from a time when saxophonist Bennie Wallace had a mighty nice edge – this raw, raspy quality that really shines through here – thanks to a stripped-down trio setting that features Eddie Gomez on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums! The album's a lot freer at times than some of the earlier tenor trio experiments – but Wallace can also change things up with effortless energy, and slide into a mellower, soulful ballad mode – something that Gomez is especially great at matching. If you only know some of Bennie's straighter work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the record will really prick up your ears to his talents – on titles that include "Blue Monk", "Head", "Broadside", and "In A Sentimental Mood". CD also features the bonus tracks "Ugly Beauty" and "Ask Me Now". CD

Cassandra WilsonNew Moon Daughter ... CD
Blue Note, 1995. Used ... $2.99
A pivotal set from Cassanda Wilson – and a record that firmly established her as one of the freshest new singers in jazz at the time! The album's awash in rootsy, dusky tones – and has an earthiness that's clearly inspired by older blues, but expressed by Cassandra in voicings that are more clearly jazz-based. Titles include an unusual range of covers – used in this way many years before the Starbucks generation of vocalists made it common place – with covers that include "Last Train To Clarksville", "Harvest Moon", "Skylark", and "Love Is Blindness" – alongside originals that include "Until", "A Little Warm Death", "Find Him", "Solomon Song", and "Memphis". ✨✧ Teri ThorntonDevil May Care ... CD
Riverside, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best albums from singer Teri Thornton – a jazz vocalist who was really starting to come into her own at the beginning of the 60s, and shines here in a way that's different from some of her bigger label sets! Backings are by Norman Simmons – a pianist we love on his own, and for his work in small groups with other singers – but a real surprise here for his work on the album's dark-tinged charts, which have a similar undercurrent of modernism to some of the work at the time by Abbey Lincoln. The group's relatively small – and features work by Seldon Powell on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Earl Warren on alto, Freddie Green on guitar, and Wynton Kelly on piano – and titles include a version of Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care", plus dark takes on "My Old Flame", "Dancing In The Dark", "Left Alone", "What's New", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". ✨✧ Sven LibaekTo Ride A White Horse (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Festival/Votary (Australia), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite records ever from the great Sven Libaek – an artist who's possibly best known for his underwater soundtrack work of the 70s, but who shines equally well here on a late 60s album that has him hitting the top of the waves! The music was written for a surf film in 1968, but has a vibe that's much richer than that – some vibes-heavy tracks that showcase Sven's background in jazz, and which tie nicely to some of the Bruce Brown jazz/surf soundtracks of the early 60s LA scene – mixed with other numbers that have more of an Aussie vibe, in that light wrapping of rhythmic currents and lyrical instrumentation! The vibes alone are worth the price of admission – and titles include "Bikini Girls", "The Lost City", "In The Wave", "To Ride A White Horse", "Turistas Turistas", "Bush Fire", "Break Of Dawn", and "Fun & Games". ✨✧ Bill EvansSome Other Time – The Lost Session From The Black Forest (2LP 180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
MPS/Resonance, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard studio work from the great Bill Evans – not another one of those many (and great) live performances from overseas – but a well-conceived, beautifully recorded set of tracks that were done for MPS Records in their famous studios in the Black Forest! The group here is Evans sublime trio with the great Eddie Gomez on bass and a young Jack DeJohnette on drums – perfect players for completely reworking the sound of the jazz piano trio, with all the new ideas that Bill had bursting forth at the time – and this material is the only studio session by the group, recorded right after their famous live appearance at Montreux in 1968 (documented on a well-known album on Verve.) The set's a double-length outing – recorded with the kind of crisp, clear sound that MPS brought to its other classic piano albums of the time by artists like Hampton Hawes or Tete Montoliu. The whole thing's wonderful – and Gomez has a wonderful presence in the mix – as the trio really shines on titles that include "Wonder Why", "Green Dolphin Street", "These Foolish Things", "Walkin Up", "Turn Out The Stars", "Very Early", "You Go To My Head", "Lover Man", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads".
