Der PlanDie Peitsche Des Lebens ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
The last album in the cool classic run of German gems from Der Plan – a group that few folks paid attention to at the time, but who really gave the world some wonderful electronic music in the post-punk years! These guys really distill all the best sides of the German electronic experiments of the 70s – serving things up in shorter tunes that are filled with unusual twists and turns, and which also have plenty of offbeat vocals and a nice sense of humor too – almost like little audio cartoons, with a quality that's far more long-lasting than some of their contemporaries! Despite the 1991 date of the record, the style here is every bit as great as the group's earliest music – and like most of their music, there's hardly any connection to a real epoch in sound – as the whole thing's so darn unique. Titles include "El Cigarro", "Kleiner Junge", "Wir Babies", "Vive Le Vie", "Alter Mann", "Es Werde Licht", and "Spiel 77". CD

Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
A great look at the Elvis Presley universe – not sounds by the King himself, but music that first inspired his creations – and other songs that have contemporary artists inspired by the records that Presley was releasing during the early years of his career! The collection is fantastic – a great sideline to the famous sounds of Elvis and Sun Records – and there's a really great range of material included throughout, all supported by very detailed notes that really show the thought and care that went into the selection of tracks. The whole thing is as vibrant and colorful as the image on the cover – and titles include "All Shook Up" by David Hill, "Just Because" by The Shelton Brothers, "Baby Let's Play House" by Vince Taylor, "King Creole" by Dick Penrose, "Hard Headed Woman" by Paul Rich, "Baby I Don't Care" by Rodney Scott, "I Beg Of You" by Jimmy Lane, "Hot Dog" by Young Jessie, "I Need Your Love Tonight" by Col Joye & The Joy Boys, "Love Me" by Billy Williams Quartet, "Paralyzed" by Mickie Most & His Playboys, and "Mystery Train" by Vernon Taylor. A great issue of this really cool publication – a book-styled journal that's filled with text and photos testifying a real love of records! The format is a bit like the Dust & Grooves book from years back – in that the magazine features interviews with folks amidst their records – but the scope is also wider, too – as the contents offer up conversations with creative people, and the way that the records influence their own work. There's loads of full color photos throughout – photos of record collections, the people who own them, and other related material – and this issue features connections and conversations with Sadar Bahar, Louise Chen, John Gomez, Apiento, Regularfantasy, Lauer, Beatrice Dillon, Public Possession, River Yarra, Anthony Naples and others. 227 pages – full color throughout! ✨✧ Isaac Hayes MovementDisco Connection ... LP
ABC, 1975. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Don't hold the "disco" in the title against Isaac – because the album's still a pretty nice one, and by no means a cheap sell-out affair! The set was recorded in Memphis, with backings by the classic Movement combo – and although the tunes do have a "sweetened" sound that's clearly aimed at the clubs, there's actually some great instrumentation on the set that goes way past stock disco riffing – and which comes across almost like a funky cop show soundtrack. In case we haven't mentioned it yet, the album's all instrumental too – with Ike leading the Movement group, but not singing on any of the album's tracks. Without vocals, there's plenty of space for the horns to work some interesting bits into the mix – alongside funky riffing on guitar and keys, and some nice use of acoustic percussion. Ike plays a bit of sweet keys on the set, and titles include "Disco Connection", "St Thomas Square", "First Day Of Forever", "Disco Shuffle", "Choppers", "After Five", and "Aruba". KleeerIntimate Connection (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
Tight 80s soul from Kleeer – one of the group's standout classics, and a set that's produced with kind of a jazzy finish by Deodato, who also plays some nice keyboards on the record! The Kleeer sound is at its height here – tight, warm, and filled with great harmonies on the vocals – which are then underpinned by a lot of keyboards and bass pedal work, yet in a way that never overwhelms the vocals. The balance is beautiful – at a level that few other groups ever seemed to reach – and there's plenty of hooks that keep things catchy throughout. Titles include "Go For It", "Intimate Connections", "Next Time It's For Real", "Tonight", "Do You Want To", and "Break". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rotary ConnectionBlack Gold Of The Sun – The Very Best Of Rotary Connection ... CD
Cadet/Universal (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the trippiest soul music ever recorded – an amazing collection of work by the legendary Rotary Connection – early home to vocalist Minnie Riperton and arranger Charles Stepney! Rotary Connection was a unique late 60s combination of soul, jazz, and rock-based modes – all inflected by more baroque production styles coming down in the Chicago scene of the time – balanced perfectly by the genius of Stepney – who often drew inspiration from avant classical work to round out his sound! Stepney gave the group a heady heady sound that went far beyond the airy vocal sound of Minnie Riperton or the rougher edge of Sidney Barnes – and the mix of unusual instrumentation, odd recording techniques, and strange timings made the group's music years ahead of its time – at a level that's really only fully appreciated these many years later. This 2CD set goes way beyond previous collections of Rotary Connection work, because it shows a real appreciation for the more adventurous sounds of Stepney in the studio – and brings together the trippiest, most freewheeling cuts from the group's 4 albums for Chess/Cadet – as well as a number of key tunes that have been heavily sampled over the years. 33 tracks in all – including "The Salt Of The Earth", "Rapid Transit", "Magical World", "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun", "A-Muse", "Sursum Mentes", "Memory Band", "Hey Love", "The Sea & She", "Song For Everyman", "Love Is", "We're Going Wrong", "Life Could", "Teach Me How To Fly", "VIP", "Let Them Talk", "Love Has Fallen On Me", "Respect", "Pink Noise", "Want You To Know", and "This Town". ✨✧ Ray Davies & The Button Down BrassThemes From The Exorcist, The French Connection, The Sting, & Other Great Films/Flashpoint ... CD
Pye/Vocalion (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. Titles include "Kojak", "Big Boss", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Mr Majestyk", "Magnum Force", "Fist Of Fury", and "Airport 1975". CD

Back Door with Alexis KornerBBC In Concert (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99
Rare live work from Back Door – a Brit trio with plenty of connections to the blues rock scene of the time, but one who has a fair bit of jazzy undertones too! The live set's presented by Alexis Korner, who also plays some guest guitar on the record – but the core sounds come from the heady trio of Ron Aspery on saxes, Colin Hodgkinson on bass, and Tony Hicks on drums – with vocals from both Aspery and Hodgkinson too! The tracks arguably have a bit more bite than the group's recordings for Warner Brothers at the time – and the set's very well recorded, and pulled from the vaults of the BBC. Titles include "Walking Blues", "Folksong", "Roberta", "Forget Me Daisy", and "His Old Boots". LP, Vinyl record album

Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel/Adventures In Paradise ... CD
EMI (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $11.99
A dream come true – Minnie's first two solo albums for Epic, back to back on one CD! Perfect Angel was one of THE albums that helped define the sound of female soul in the 70s – a record that moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". Adventures In Paradise is even better – and may well be Minnie's greatest album ever! The album's a sparkling work of jazzy soul, with touches of the heavenly production that Minnie got in years past, and lots of smooth mellow songs that are perfectly suited to her other-worldly voice. Includes the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP! 19 tracks in all – and an essential CD for any fan of 70s soul! ✨✧ Eddie Vinson/Jimmy WitherspoonBattle Of The Blues Vol 3 ... LP
King, Early 50s. Very Good ... $199.99
Wonderful early work from Eddie Cleanhead Vinson and Jimmy Witherspoon – both singers who had a strong connection to jazz over the years, but who work here in a nicely raw mode that befits the album's King Records placement! Vinson's a genius – a really overlooked singer who can effortlessly skirt jazz and blues, with a sophistication that was a huge precursor to the soul generation to come – and Witherspoon here is at the rawest side of his spectrum, with a vibe that's more LA postwar scene than some of his later material. Vinson sings "Featherbed Mama", "No Good Woman", "Ashes On My Pillow", "I Trusted You Baby", and "Somebody Done Stole My Cherry Red" – and Witherspoon sings "Sad Life", "Don't Tell Me Now", "The Last Mile", "24 Sad Hours", and "Highway To Happiness". A soaring batch of disco gems, club cuts, and undiscovered nuggets – all pulled together to make a set that's even better than the first entry in this Disco Wonderland series! DJ Andy Smith and associates bring together a great array of fresh tracks from back in the day – not massive disco hits, but also not the kind of rare gems that maybe never made the cut for a good reason – and instead, the tracks here work together perfectly, and even get a few special mixes along the way by Smith and the crew, which includes a few contemporary cuts that fit perfectly next to the vintage material. VariousLand Of 1000 Dances – The Complete Rampart Recordings (4CD box set) ... CD
Rampart/Minky, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $35.99 39.98
A fantastic overview of the legendary Rampart Records – one of the strongest soul labels on the LA scene of the 60s, and a company that did some surprisingly compelling work in the 70s too! Rampart's biggest-ever act was Cannibal & The Headhunters – and the set is titled after their classic giant hit – but the company also really had a strong ear to the ground on the scene in East LA – which meant that they worked in a really great blend of modes that included vocal group soul, Latin-styled sounds, and plenty of funk and straighter soul too – before resurfacing in the late 70s with a more eclectic blend of music. This package is the first to really do justice to the complete Rampart legacy – and brings together every single issued by the imprint, who hardly ever put out full albums – a total of 79 tracks that's pretty darn heavy on the 60s, and which includes both the a-sides and b-sides of the singles. There's also a massive book, too – filled with notes on the story of the label, the details of all the songs, and a huge amount of photos – including a section on Rampart artists on the road in the 60s. A fantastic set, and a huge bargain for the price – with work by The Village Callers, Hummingbird 4, The Four Tempos, The Majestics, East Bay Soul Brass, Cannibal & The Headhunters, Phil & Del, Randy Thomas, Sammy Lee & The Summits, The Mixtures, Skylite, Eastside Connection, Graciela Palafox, and Raven. VariousMidwest Funk – Funk 45s From Tornado Alley ... CD
Jazzman/Stones Throw, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Quite possibly one of the greatest funk compilations ever – and we're not just saying that because we're from the Midwest! The genius compilers at Jazzman spent years scouring the smaller cities of the American hinterlands – tracking down obscure musicians, long-lost labels, and nearly-gone master tapes – all to bring together 23 bits of rare funk that bristle with the same energy and excitement as the day they were first recorded! The package is incredible – not only filled with incredible tunes that somehow manage to push the boundaries and redefine our understanding of classic funk from the time, but also doing so in a package that's filled with liner notes that offer more information on the artists than probably their own mothers know! Plus, the set's also got some previously unissued numbers as well – making it a must-have for any funk fan, even if you've somehow managed to track down original copies of some of these choice bits! Titles include "Whip It" by The New Establishment In Soul, "Let's Do It Today (full version)" by The Us, "Pushin To The Top" by Markus Kelly & The Impassions, "Sissy Walk" by Billy Ball & The Upsetters, "Tell Her" by Fred Williams & The Jewels Band, "The Hatch" by The TMGs, "Boots Groove" by The Soul Tornados, "Po Boy's Dream" by Illinois Connection, "It's Not You For Me (live)" by Billy Joe Holloman, "Funky In Here" by Dayton Sidewinders, "Master Groove" by Henry Peters & The Imperials, and "A Day In The Life" by Chocolate Snow. ✨✧ VariousPhil's Spectre – A Wall Of Soundalikes ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
That's not a typo in the title – the compilation's a collection of tracks that all bear the mark of Phil Spector – Spector's Spectres, if you will! It's a well known fact that Phil had a monumental impact on 60s rock, pop, and soul music – as his "wall of sound" production style forever transformed the sound of the single back in the sixties. And although there's been lots of compilations that focus on Phil's own work, this is the first one we've seen to showcase his proteges and contemporaries – a surprisingly wide range of studio talents who all picked up on Phil's tricks and twists! The tunes on the set include some great 60s soul and pop numbers, and a bunch of the tracks are reissued legally here for the first time. Plus, the set's got some wonderful liner notes – really taking you through the tracks, and explaining the connection to Spector and the overall sound of the music. Features production work by Nick DeCaro, Van McCoy, Jan Davis, Abner Spector, Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier, Brian Wilson, Sonny Bono, and Jack Nitszche – and titles that include "When You Walk In The Room" by Jackie DeShannon, "When The Boy's Happy" by The Four Pennies, "Hang On" by The Wall Of Sound, "Tremblin" by Gene Pitney, "A Little Love" by Alder Ray, "On The Spanish Side" by The Corsairs & Landy McNeil, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" by The Beach Boys, "Just You" by Sonny & Cher, "I Can't Make It Alone" by PJ Proby, "And That Reminds Me" by The Dolls, "You're So Fine" by Dorothy Berry, "Missing My Baby" by Clydie King, and "I Just Couldn't Say" by Lorraine & The Delights. Classic cuts from the TK Records stable of Miami disco from the 70s – all of which are served up here on 7" single mixes, a fair bit of which appear here on CD for the first time ever! TK is maybe best known for it's long-spun club cuts that were a perfect fit for the budding 12" format in the mid 70s – but the label also turned out plenty of cuts with a tight, catchy groove that was perfect for a funky 45 – which might have been why TK was one of the few labels to rule both on the radio and on the dancefloors back in the day! Japanese DJ T Groove takes us through 20 TK singles here – with tracks that include "Return Of Vader" by AD, "Macho" by Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch, "Higher" by Chi-Lites, "Star Cruiser" by Gregg Diamond, "Moon Ride" by Universal Love, "Let's Dance" by Wild Honey, "Have A Good Day (part 1)" by Gail Eason, "Music (voc)" by Montreal Sound, "I'm Gonna Dance" by Asha Puthli, "Dancin In My Feet" by Laura Taylor, "Holding Back" by Gregg Diamond, "At Midnight" by T Connection, "If There's Love" by Amant, "Spank" by Jimmy Bo Horne, and "The Break (short)" by Kat Mandu. Turns out, folks were going to the moon long before Neil Armstrong took his giant step for mankind – spinning out into space with rare singles like these – all great moon-themed numbers that rocket into space with solid fuel of their own! The set's got this fantastic mix of styles – deep soul, heavy funk, raw garage rock, and stomping R&B – plus a few other numbers that almost defy description, but which share plenty with the rest in terms of their space-age themes and cool approach to instrumentation and production! There's plenty of playful moments throughout – and the whole thing is a groovy collection of tracks that we mostly wouldn't have heard otherwise. Titles include "Walking On The Moon" by Rev Jamel & Bob Johnson, "Sputnik" by Sidney Owens & North South Connection, "Moon Man Is Back" by La La Wilson, "Crazy Stockings On The Moon" by The Swinging Astronauts, "Moon Child" by Ernest & DL Rocco, "Mars In 75 (part 1)" by Sunny Man Kado, "Mondgesicht" by Orchester Ambros Seelos, "Moon Child" by Scott Cunningham Band, and "Voyage To The Moon" by Black Fox. Black Fire/Now Again, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record from one of the greatest underground jazz groups of the 70s! Oneness of Juju are perhaps best known for the heavy funk of their first album, African Rhythms – but we're actually partial to this second album – a warmly spiritual batch of soul jazz tracks, and a set that's filled with life, emotion, and wonderful instrumentation throughout! The group are a bit more relaxed overall – easing into things, but in a way that really builds up as the album moves on – as they layer together heavy percussion, sweet keyboards, and lots of great sax solos from Plunky Nakabinde – plus wonderfully warm vocals that add a soulful edge the group never had before, but which still is very jazzy – and not like the funky club of later years. The whole thing's wonderfully cohesive, and a treasure throughout – and titles include the warm vocal number "River Luvrite", to the harder hitting "Space Jungle Funk", and other gems like "Soul Love Now", "Follow Me", "The Connection", and "Love's Messenger". Saturn/Cosmic Myth, 1966. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic material from the legendary Sun Ra – groundbreaking solo piano material, which shows a completely different side of his genius away from his work with the Arkestra! The package presents all volumes of Ra's seminal sides from 1966 – including a third volume, which has never been released at all – making for the most comprehensive package to ever document this side of his work in a more intimate manner! There's a sensitivity to these tracks that's really amazing – still moments of freedom that reflect Ra's connection to the avant garde of the time – but also echoes of Art Tatum and other stylists who influenced his initial vision in the early days – interwoven with his own sense of cosmic creation, in ways that are similar to his later solo projects – but which didn't often show up in other Saturn material of the time. Some tracks are altered standards, but many others are really great originals – and titles include the unreleased "Soundscapes", "The Eternal Tomorrow", "The Changing Wind", "World Island Festival", "Today Is Not Yesterday", "How Am I To Know", and "Yesterdays" – plus "Caloundronius", "Perspective Prismis Of Is", "Solar Boats", "The Ninth Eye", "Space Towers", "Cognition", "The Galaxy Way", "The Alter Destiny", and "Blue Differentials". A Stereolab album that's very near and dear to our hearts – given the strong Chicago connection, thanks to production help from both John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke – two amazing musicians on their own, who each bring a special flavor to the album! The music is a wonderful blend of the farther sonic reaches of the group and some of the more tuneful qualities of their earlier years – balanced out in a really wonderful way. The set starts with the vibe-heavy "Black Ants In Sound-Dust", and gets groovier from there with the danceable, hypnotic beats of "Space Moth", and some very catchy horns in "Captain Easychord" – a nice continuation of the longer, more open-ended work on Cobra & Phases record, but with the much more insistently catchy grooves of their earlier material. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer set of rare club and underground disco – filled with lots of tracks we haven't seen on other collections! Andy Smith has given us many amazing compilations over the years – sets that have a special mix magic, made up of rocksteady, reggae, vintage funk, and even some rockabilly too! Yet as Andy says here in the notes, he first got hooked on music in the disco generation – and has always had a life-long love of unusual and underground grooves – which he definitely demonstrates here, in a stunning selection of cuts that focus on the funkier side of the disco generation – with a good number of tracks that have turned out to be sample cuts over the years. Titles include "For The Love Of Money" by Disco Dub Band, "Patty Duke" by Cloud One, "Times Are Tight" by Jimmy Young, "Share The Night" by World Premiere, "Is It In" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Let It Flow" by Tamiko Jones, "Main Thing" by Shot with Kim Marsh, "Give It Up" by Neddy Smith, "Groove To Get Down" by T-Connection, "Holding You Tight (ext DJ mix)" by Sure Thing, "First True Love Affair (Andy Smith & Nick Halke reach up edit)" by Jimmy Ross, "Got To Have You (Whiskey Barons re-edit)" by Joanne Wilson, "I Wanna Be Myself" by Don Laka, "Get Up & Boogie" by Freedom, and "Take Me To The Top" by Advance. 2CD version features all tracks unmixed on one disc, and a special mix on the other! Fantasy, Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool collection of funky tracks from the Fantasy Records catalog of the 70s – the kind of hip cuts that were often better than mainstream disco – and which sometimes used a bit of jazz in the instrumentation as well! There's a few spacey themes here, but maybe not as much as you'd guess from the cover and title – but that's OK with us, because we can totally dig these down to earth grooves! ✨✧ ParliamentMothership Connection ... LP
Casablanca, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Here's where it all happens – the huge culmination of all the years of heavy funk and psychedelic soul created by George Clinton and the P-Funk empire – fused into an amazingly tight groove that helped win over much bigger audiences than ever before! The album title and cover are very fitting – as George Clinton launches the mothership, forges his classic space-funk image, and blows the P-Funk empire into an arena-filling mega-star act – all with grooves that are still some of the tightest, sharpest funk you'll ever hear – all these many decades later. The instrumentation is razor-sharp – played by giants like Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins, and Bernie Worrell – and the lyrics still have all the edginess and naughtiness of the earlier years – tied together wonderfully to make a very unified album, and one that's full of classics too! Titles include "Mothership Connection (Star Child)", "Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples", "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Handcuffs", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", and "Unfunky Ufo". Funk To The Max (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Vintage live recordings by George Clinton and his mighty P-Funk empire in the mid 70s – rehearsal sessions for the famous P-Funk Earth Tour – recorded in an airplane hanger in upstate New York! The sound is incredibly crisp and vibrant – these aren't sloppy rehearsal moments, but the group at their best – working with a tightness that's mindblowing, and having a sense of presence that's maybe even more upfront than the famous live album from the tour – as the smaller venue and recording style really captures the spontaneous energy of the performance! All the classic names are here, except Bootsy Collins – Fuzzy Haskins, Garry Shider, Jerome Brailey, Bernie Worrell, and even Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns – on titles that include "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On", "Undisco Kidd", "Gettin To Know You", "Comin Round The Mountain", "Do That Stuff", "Dr Funkenstein", and "Mothership Connection". ✨✧ Freddie ReddRedd's Blues ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real corker from Freddie Redd – and never issued at the time! Despite the fact that Freddie was part of one of the greatest sessions ever on Blue Note – the soundtrack to The Connection, done with Jackie McLean – he rarely got the chance to record more for the label, which is what makes this session an especially great treat! The set features Freddie working with an ultra-hip lineup that includes trumpeter Benny Bailey, tenorist Tina Brooks, and the great Jackie McLean, who always seemed to bring out an edge in Freddie's playing that didn't show up otherwise. The style of the tunes is hardbop, in general, but they've got these sharp little edges and modern twists that really make them sound fresh. Perhaps that's why Blue Note didn't issue the session at the time – we'll never know for sure – but it's also what makes the album so enjoyable now! Titles include "Now", "Cute Doot", "Somewhere", "Love Lost", and "Old Spice". CD

✨✧ Freddie ReddShades Of Redd (RVG remaster edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
An exquisite bit of modernist hardbop – recorded by Freddie Redd with the same sort of sound that he brought to the classic Connection recording, also done for Blue Note! As with that session, Redd is working here with alto from a young Jackie McLean's on alto sax – really at the top of his powers here, and beautifully skirting a line that runs between soulful hardbop and some of the more modern phrasing McLean would use during his "new thing" years! Tina Brooks is on tenor, and as on other classic Blue Notes – such as the Street Singer album – the Brooks/McLean combination makes for some stellar solo work throughout. Redd's piano is firey in a way that we can hardly describe, and tracks include "Thespian", "Melanie", and "Shadows". This CD reissue also includes a few bonus cuts – alternate takes of "Melanie" and "Ole". CD

✨✧ Rotary ConnectionSongs/Hey Love ... CD
Cadet/BGP (UK), 1969/1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pair of gems from the legendary Rotary Connection – an early Chicago group that featured Minnie Riperton on vocals, and Charles Stepney on production! Songs is amazing soul from Rotary Connection – and one of their greatest albums! The "songs" concept has the group working over a bunch of tunes by other folks – and the record features many late 60s rock titles, redone with the group's incredible baroque soul sound. Charles Stepney did the arrangements, and the music has that airy eerie quality that worked perfectly for Minnie Riperton's amazing voice. Includes a stellar cover of "Respect", with a slow trippy groove that has been sampled over the years – plus a wild cover of "Tales of Brave Ulysses" that virtually defines the term "psychedelic soul". Other tracks include "The Weight", "This Town", "The Salt Of The Earth", and "Sunshine Of Your Love". Hey Love is a massively beautiful piece of work by "the new Rotary Connection" – a version of this groundbreaking Chicago soul ensemble which featured Phil Upchurch, Henry Gibson, and Charles Stepney – the cream of the Chicago production scene! Minnie Riperton's still in the band on vocals, and her work on the LP is similar to that on the legendary Come To My Garden LP. The album features the incredible track "I Am the Blackgold of the Sun" – a haunting soul anthem that has been a favorite of groovers for years, and which was later made into a house track by NuYorican Soul. A great album all the way through, and filled with loads of excellent cuts! Other tracks include "If I Sing My Song", "Hey, Love", "Love Has Fallen On Me", and a cover of Terry Callier's "Song For Everyman". CD

Saturn/Cosmic Myth, 1966. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. Used ... $12.99
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Definitely the sort of album to make you feel better – given the tight, soulful sounds of Ndugu Chancler and this Chocolate Jam Company! The album's got roots in jazz – Ndugu's a drummer with work on countless other albums – but also steps out with plenty of soul, too – thanks to vocals from Ndugu, Leo Miller, Josie James, and Maxi Anderson – who often sing together in this warm style that fits perfectly with the grooves in the set! Instrumentation is definitely a cut above the usual session of this type – no surprise, given the jazz and fusion heavyweights in the lineup – and the tunes are catchy and grooving, yet never clunky or commercial at all. The blend is sublime – the sort that's made the record a standout for years – and titles include "Send You My Love", "Space Connection", "Make You Feel Better", "Jungle Journey", "Love Anew", and "Come Into My Life Again". Ben SidranFree In America/Doctor Is In/Little Kiss In The Night/Live At Montreux ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
Four albums from the great Ben Sidran – a mighty hip jazz singer, and a great pianist too! First up is Free In America – a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. Titles include the great instrumental "Let's Make A Deal" – a fast groover with guitar and keyboards riffing away, sounding like some lost jazz funk gem from the Fantasy Records catalog – plus "Beg For It", "Cuban Connection", "Free In America", "New York State Of Mind", and "Feel Your Groove". Doctor Is In is one of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side". Little Kiss In The Night is one of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". Live At Montreux is tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to the more open flow of his Blue Thumb years – with plenty of room not only for Sidran's great vocals, but also from instrumental contributions from Steve Khan on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, and the Brecker Brothers on horns. Titles include "I Remember Clifford", "Eat It", "Song For A Sucker Like You", "Midnight Tango/Walking With The Blues", and "Come Together". CD

Really great work from saxophone genius Kamasi Washington – music that's very different than the longform sounds of his epic sets – yet very beautiful too, and clearly showing off a whole new feather in Kamasi's mighty cap! As you can tell from the title, the work is music for a documentary soundtrack – and Washington really rises to the occasion with music of majesty – all jazz throughout, but mixed with some extra strings at times too – a bit like those fantastic instrumental moments that Bill Lee did for the early films of Spike – served up here with a similar sense of pride, power, and subtle righteousness! Other players include Rickey Washington on alto and flute, Ryan Porter on trombone, Dontae Winslow on trumpet, and Cameron Graves on piano and Fender Rhodes – on titles that include "Take In The Story", "Shot Out Of A Cannon", "Song For Fraser", "Southside V1", "Detail", "Fashion Now & Then", "Connections", "Looking Forward", and "I Am Becoming". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99 39.98
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. Titles include "I'm Every Woman" by Latisha, "In The Rain" by rRnest Ranglin, "Reggae Beat Goes On" by Family Choice, "Ring My Bell" by Blood Sisters, "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" by Derrick Laro & Trinity, "Do It Nice & Easy" by Chariot Riders, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Upside Down" by Carol Cool, "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Sharon Forrester, "Rappers Delight" by Xanadu & Sweet Lady, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by Risco Connection, "Am I The Same Girl" by Charmaine Burnette, and "Be Thankful For What You Got" by One Blood. Excellent 12" tracks from the Streetwise/Partytime label – the kind of unusual dubs, instrumentals, and remixes the company always put on its extended singles – usually numbers that are sparkling with just the right sort of electro touches that made these records real favorites for both the breakers in the streets and the mixers in the club! Streetwise had a number of big hits back in the day, but most of these numbers are non-vocal versions of those songs – and really show the great ear for beats that helped make the label one of the key forces for bringing the sound of hip hop back into soul music. Amadana (Japan), 2020. New Item ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally great little unit – and a great answer to the problem of the disappearing CD player! This tiny little CD player is easy to pack up and go – about the size of a stack of a few CDs, and equally light – with no internal battery unit or speakers – just a USB cord to provide power, and connection if needed – although the player also has bluetooth as well! This means that you can bring the player with you wherever you go, plug it into a car jack or conventional USB adaptor for a wall outlet – and either listen via headphones, or by streaming to a bluetooth speaker! The quality is great – and most immediately, the whole thing becomes a much-needed replacement for the automobile CD player, which is becoming a thing of the past. ✨✧ DellsMusical Menu ... LP
Cadet, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of The Dells' best albums from this period – and a real Cadet studios masterpiece, thanks to some incredibly groovy arrangements by Charles Stepney! The sound's a bit like some of the Rotary Connection albums put together under Stepney's supervision – but given that the group is the Dells, the vocals are much much better, with a much stronger soul component – and fused with some incredible musical arrangements! The whole thing's wonderful – and graced by an incredible gatefold cover that has pictures of miniaturized Dells members being served with eggs and bacon as part of a "musical menu"! Tracks include "Believe Me", "Always Together", "Hallways of My Mind", and the trippy "Agatha Van Thurgood". LP, Vinyl record album

Polygram/Casablanca, Late 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
After beginning life as a super fuzzed-out psychasouladelic band, Parliament emerged as one of the best pop-funk combos of the mid/late 70s – with a tight tight sound that mixed the smooth major label sound of Casablanca with the mad funk genius of George Clinton. This huge 3LP set brings together some of the band's best tracks from their glory years of the late 70s – when they were hitting the charts and selling a huge amount of albums to college kids stoned out of their mind waiting for the mothership to land. Tracks include "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Mothership Connection (Star Child)", "Testify", "Mr. Wiggles", "Bop Gun", "Up For The Down Stroke", "Theme From The Black Hole", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", "Flashlight", "Ride On", "Rumpofsteelskin", "Agony Of Defeet", and "Children Of Production". 25 tracksin all! ✨✧ Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel ... LP
Epic, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too – not credited with production, due to contractual reasons, although he helped put most of the album together. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". Young Turks, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Whomp! These guys bring it all down on the beat – hitting harder than Cassius Clay at the Rome Olympics in '60, packing bass, guitar, and drums into one funky punch – pounding out a hard heavy groove all the way through their entire debut LP! Of course, these guys have the talent to do it right – sporting a connection to the Poets Of Rhythm that you can certainly hear in some of the album's more stoned-out grooves – and like that hip funky combo, the Whitefield Brothers maintain a strong mix of classic funky modes, with just the right touches of professional trippiness to push the whole thing over the top. An instant classic, Desco-style – with tracks that include "Prowlin", "In The Raw", "Sol Walk", "Eji", "Thunderbird", "Weiya", and "Yakuba". CD

Page One/RPM (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album that's maybe best remembered for its connection with the world of the young Elton John – as the man himself plays piano on the record, and also contributed a number of songs – but a set that's also a standout achievement from sisters Doreen and Irene Chanter! The duo are British, but sing together in a way that clearly draws a lot of inspiration from southern soul – that version of the music that you'd find refracted through a British prism on records like Honky Chateau or Tumbleweed Connection – but coming through nicely in the girls' own songs too. Production is great – nicely understated, even when full – and the main focus is on the vocals, which are surprisingly soulful throughout. Titles include "Take Me To The Pilot", "Border Song", "Leaving The Ghetto", "Country Comfort", "All God's Children Got Soul", "One More Time", "Take The World", "Bad Side Of The Moon", and a cool cover of "Gimme Shelter" that's almost got a Motown vibe! Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The deepest sounds so far from Ryan Porter – a double-length album of spiritual majesty, and a set that marks Porter as one of the key up-and-coming players on the West Coast Get Down scene! The record has long tracks that are very far-thinking jazz all the way through – mostly instrumental, although with the occasional vocal passage here and there – delivered with this sense of promise and mission that we never would have expected in Porter's music at the start – both in the strength of his trombone solos, and the overall conception of the sound. The core group is fantastic – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Cameron Graves and Brandon Coleman on Fender Rhodes and piano, Thundercat on electric bass, Miles Mosely on acoustic bass, and Tony Austin on drums – and titles include "Blame It On The Sun", "Carriacou", "Oscalypso", "Peple Talk", "World On Wheels", "Mesosphere", "Madiba", "Heaven Only Knows", and a great jazz take on the Rotary Connection classic "Memory Band". Classic cuts, made even better by the magic hands of Al Kent – a mixing talent we've trusted for years, and one with an uncanny knack for making the same kind of special sounds you'd hear on a rare club edit from back in the day! These tracks aren't remixed, or bogged down with new musical touches – they're just pulled apart and reconstructed in ways that make the initial grooves even better, and which often extends the tunes to great new lengths – but never in a way that gets too overdone or predictable! Al Kent's got ears that feel like they've never left the 70s, and he really keeps things right throughout – on a list of tracks that includes "I Wanna Love" by Jo Bisso, "Doin Your Own Thing" by Tangerue, "You Never Loved Me" by Ava Cherry, "Givin Back The Feeling" by George McCrae, "Fire Keep On Burning" by King Sporty, "San Salvador" by Grupo Macho, "You Like It We Love It" by Southroad Connection, "Wonder Woman" by JD Hall, and "Keep On Moving" by Phillip & Lloyd. Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer collection of east coast soul from the 70s – work that originally appeared on a handful of different labels, but which was all put together by Robert Hosea Williams – an unsung producer working out of a small studio in Silver Springs – with an incredible ear for up-and-coming talent! The music here is totally deep and righteous throughout – the hippest of the indie label scene on the east coast – and work that really lives up to the progressive, righteous reference you'd get from the Red, Black, & Green in the title! There's plenty of group soul here – of a type that mixes older harmony modes with hipper 70s references – creating a really badass approach to soul music that's simply mindblowing – and way different than the mainstream variants that were hitting the charts at the time. The whole thing's great – one of the best Numero comps in years – and titles include "Phoney People" and "I Really Really Love You" by Father's Children, "Sleepwalking" and "Let's Do It Over" by The Summits, "Don't Worry About The Joneses" and "We're Two Fools In Love" by Dysons Faces, "Day By Day" and "It Must Be Love" by The Exceptions Featuring Mark Greene, "Town Called Nowhere" and "I Need Your Love" by Skip Mahoney & The Casuals, and "Summer In The Parks" and "Generation" by East Coast Connection. Funky genius from the folks who started it all! Way back when nobody cared at all about rare little funky 45s (and believe us, we were trying to sell them then – so we know!), the folks at Pure Records were putting out stellar compilations filled with the stuff, all done at a level of pure funk connoisseurship that ended up informing today's generation of funk fans fed on the compilations of BBE, Soul Patrol, and other newer labels. This set is one of their best-ever collections of rare wax, and it features 14 super-heavy funksters that you'll be proud to play for even the fussiest funk fan! Titles include "Hanging Out" by James West, "La Turbie Piranhienne" by Piranha Sounds, "Cold Sweat" by Brother Williams, "Countdown To Soul" by The Explorers, "In The Pocket" by Hindal Butts, "Soul Dig pt 1" by The Soul Diggers, "Ghetto Boogie" by Ellen Jackson Big Star Band, and "Loaded To The Gills" by Michael Liggins. Great stuff, with loads of funky drums, fuzzy bass, blaring horns, distorted guitars, and deep soul vocals! ✨✧ Joseph JarmanBlack Case Vols 1 & 2 – Return From Exile ... Book
Blank Forms, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic side of the many talents of Joseph Jarman – best known as a key member of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and a saxophonist whose talents were crucial to the formation of the AACM – but also a very strong writer, as you'll discover in this book! This version is the full 1977 version of Black Case – and brings together material from the original self-published version in 1974, plus other writings that Jarman had done over the years – some of which later turned up as texts on a variety of albums! The book is a mixture of poetry, free verse, and some prose – sometimes personal, but also very political – maybe even more so than the work of the AEOC. The whole thing is a fantastic revelation, and a representation of Jarman's connection to a much richer cultural world in Chicago – and the book is beautifully done – blue text on white pages, with some images sprinkled throughout – very much a facsimile of the original. 146 pages, softcover. ✨✧ Kirk KnuffkeTight Like This ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We really love the way that Kirk Knuffke shapes the sounds that come from his horn – blowing cornet with this earthy, mouthy style that's extremely personal – and which takes on an even more unique quality in the setting of this album! The record's got Kirk in an unusual trio – Kenny Wollesen on drums and percussion, and Bob Stewart on tuba – using the instrument often in a bass-like way, ala the years of jazz before the string bass became the dominant instrument for its role – but also making a space to match the rhythm of the drums and the phrasing of Knuffke's horn! There's an obvious connection to brass band modes, but that's hardly part of the sound at all – as the record is more in the creative legacy that Stewart's been giving us on his instrument for many years – particularly those key contributions in the 80s, when he really exploded the potentials of his instrument. Titles include "Jungle Soul", "Any Again Again", "Shake A Lady", "Chicutz", "Cyclops", "Dozen A Day", "Bring A Bell", "Four Butch Two", and "Wind Spirit". CD

Raheem DeVaughn really sends us to the place promised in the title – with an excellent set of mellow soul groovers that rework an older 70s ballad mode with some key contemporary touches! Raheem's love of classic styles still holds strong throughout, but the record's also got a crispness that's very fresh and present too – the kind of edge that modern soul can bring to mellower cut and still keep things funky, even when the grooves are moving slow! Raheem's vocals really stretch out in the setting – pushing the ceiling when he really opens up, and reminding us that at the core of it all is a very dedicated singer of soul. Rare funk from the same Minneapolis scene that gave the world Prince – a legendary indie set from the end of the 70s, put together by Lewis brothers Pierre and Andre! Despite their French names, the duo have a mighty American groove on the set – a wicked approach to funk that's very much in the best ensemble mode of the period – but leaner too, given the smaller lineup, and relatively sparse production – which makes most of the record bristle like some rare boogie 45! Vocals are by the brothers, plus female singer Barbara Bolar, and later Prince-mate Sonny Thompson – and Prince himself even adds in some slight magic to one cut on the set. A very very cool record – an unusual take on the music to The Connection – that hip early 60s play that featured a more famous version of the soundtrack on Blue Note Records! This version's much more obscure – part of a "localization" that occurred when the play would travel from town to town – and it features a Detroit-based recording, headed by keyboardist Johnny Griffith – who also recorded famously for Motown and RCA! Griffith's playing electric piano here, which really changes the vibe of the music – and the players are supposedly a host of Motown studio musicians – playing jazz here, but with a nice funky soul undercurrent. Fierce funky work from this late 80s UK duo – contemporaries of Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and some of the other big British acts of the time – but a pair who never fully got their due! The "street soul" title here is really well-placed – as the grooves have a style that's an evolution of earlier electro modes – warmed up nicely, in the style that Jazzie B and his generation were bringing to the scene – but maybe still lean enough in construction to still appeal to fans of the previous generation! Two tracks here get a bit clubby, but in a good way, and the others are more in a midtempo groove, nicely bouncing along with the beats – on titles that include "R U Available", "Change/Love", "In & Out Of Love", "It's All Over", "Waiting 4 Your Love", and "The Way Love Is". Charlie Parker, 1962. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A remake of the score to The Connection – the famous play about drug addicts and jazz musicians that was later made into a film by Shirley Clarke, and which featured a soundtrack (issued on Blue Note) by Freddie Redd and Jackie McLean. Before it was a film, though, the play toured a number of local areas – each of which would have a new group of jazz musicians, the event of which would often yield a new score to the play. From the notes, it's hard to tell if Payne was ever in the play – or if the group here was just one put together to cash in on the success of the well-received work. We tend to think the latter – as the group's a bit to pro and too big (a sextet) to be just a pick-up combo in a New York loft, waiting for some drugs to arrive. The record is a nice one, though – one of the few fine albums to feature Payne as a leader, recorded with players that include Bennie Green, Clark Terry, Duke Jordan, Charlie Persip, and Ron Carter. Tracks are all new ones – either by Payne or Kenny Drew – and titles include "Stop & Listen", "Dear People", "Born Again", and "Kenny's One". LP, Vinyl record album

Jaimie BranchFly Or Die 2 – Bird Dogs Of Paradise ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
A really fantastic album from Jaimie Branch – one that's even more powerful than the first Fly Or Die set – which is saying a heck of a lot, given that that record hit most of us with a pretty hard punch! The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. The record also features guest work from Ben Lamar Gay and Marvin Tate on voice, Matt Schneider on 12 string guitar, and Dan Bitney on percussion and synth – and titles include "Prayer For Amerikkka (parts 1 & 2)", "Lesterlude", "Love Song", "Simple Silver Surfer", "Bird Dogs Of Paradise", "Nuevo Roquero Estereo", and "Twentey Three N Me Jupiter Redux". Michel SardabyNight Blossom (2CD version) ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... About August 19, 2020 (delayed)
Lovely work from pianist Michel Sardaby – a player who probably spent more time on the eastern side of the Atlantic than he did in America, which is a reason why he never really got his due in the US. However, Sardaby's connection to the Parisian scene filled his playing with that wonderful mix of lyricism and modernism that you find in the best French jazz pianists – and it's still very much alive in this 1990 recording for DIW. The set features backing by Tootie Heath on drums and Jay Leonhart on bass – a great duo, who really bring a lot of energy to the set – even though Sardaby's still the main focus, with those beautifully flowing lines of his that we love so much! Titles include "Madrugada", "Way Farer", "Maelstrom", and "Night Blossom". CD

Three Ring CircusGroovin' On The Sunshine ... LP
RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A weird bit of sunshine pop – with the unusual feature that side one of the album is vocal, and side two is instrumental! There's some wonderful backings on the set – almost in a Rotary Connection mode, with lots of strange production, echoey orchestrations, and a good mix of conventional instrumentation turned trippy, next to rockish influences on guitar. Very wild stuff, especially on the instrumentals – and with tracks that include "Fantastic Voyage", "Groovin On Sunshine", "So True", "Lovin Machine", and "I Can't Be Trusted". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Atomic/School DaysDistil ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An explosive meeting between Atomic and Ken Vandermark's School Days combo – proof that the Chicago/Scandinavia connection is stronger than ever! The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. The vibes add a nicely chromatic quality to the work amidst some of the fiercer horn passages – and titles include "Deadline", "Irrational Ceremony", "Visitors", "Andersonville", "Dark Easter", "Fort Funston", "Bunuel At The Cocktail Party", and "Closing Stages". ✨✧ Rafael CameronCameron ... CD
Salsoul, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
The debut from Rafael Cameron – a pretty soulful set for Salsoul produced by Brass Connection's Randy Muller! Cameron's got a nice deep soul sound to his vocals, and although the arrangements are uptempo and clubby on some tracks, they're not there to cover up the singing, and have a nice soulful groove! Muller plays piano, flute and some of the percussion, with some sweet guitar in the mix, and some congas – with nice female backing vocals, too! Cuts are on the longer side, and include the dancefloor groover "Let's Get It Off", plus "Funkdown", "Magic Of You", and "Together" and "Feelin's". CD includes the bonus instrumental "All That's Good To Me". CD

✨✧ Martin L Dumas Jr/Joe StopkaAttitude, Belief, & Determination/Nonstop To The Top (limited edition blue vinyl) ... 12-inch
Taurean Connection/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible record from the Chicago scene – issued on a tiny little label from deep on the south side – and done with a much richer vibe than you might expect! "Attitude Belief & Determination" is a track that's almost got a righteous, spiritual sort of flavor – but a vibe that's funkier overall – somewhere in that classic James Mason mix of message and groove, with wonderful paired vocals in the lead, and a stepping bassline under Fender Rhodes, which really sends the whole thing home! The track is nice and long, and backed by by "Nonstop To The Top" – a tune with a bit more boogie in the bassline, but still this spacious sort of groove overall. Both cuts were recorded at Curtom – with production that's definitely a cut above the usual indie 12" single! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Beautiful pressing – heavy blue vinyl!)

✨✧ Minnie RipertonPetals – The Minnie Riperton Collection ... CD
Capitol/Right Stuff, 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Finally – the first major collection of work by Minnie Riperton, one of our favorite-ever soul singers! Minnie's had a lasting influence on the music that matters to us – from her early work as a girl group singer in Chicago, to her groundbreaking baroque soul in the group Rotary Connection, to her monumental smooth soul sides of the 70s. This massive 35 track, 2CD set collects songs from all these aspects of Minnie's tragically short career – and it's the first to give a true picture of the rich body of work that she waxed during her all-too-brief time on this planet. Not only does the set feature stunning tracks from her landmark albums on Epic during the 70s – like "Perfect Angel", "Adventures In Paradise", "Baby This Love I Have", "Inside My Love", "Memory Lane", "Loving You", "Reasons", and "Young Willing & Able" – but it also includes work from her earlier years at Chess/Cadet – like the tracks "Lonely Girl", "Respect", "You Gave Me Soul", "I Took A Ride", "Les Fleur", "Completeness", and "We're Going Wrong". Plus, you even get a few duets – like "Light My Fire", recorded with Jose Feliciano, "Here We Go", done with Peabo Bryson, and "Lovin You", cut live with George Benson. There's also a demo of "Seeing You This Way", plus some studio dialog! It's been ages since anyone's recognized Minnie's genius this way – but the wait has been worth it! CD
