Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI/Abkco, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A very cool early 10" album from The Animals – the group's second in this format, and never originally issued in the US! The group are at their young, gritty best here – with lots of bluesy currents in the music, thanks to Alan Price on Hammond – topped with soulful vocals from the mighty Eric Burdon, who never fails to blow us away. Titles include the great "I'm Mad Again", plus "Bury My Body", "She Said Yeah", and "I'm In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Kevin AyersRainbow Takeaway/That's What You Get Babe ... CD
EMI/BGO (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Two later solo albums from Kevin Ayers – back to back on a single CD! First up is Rainbow Takeaway – a record that's a bit out of time, given all the changes that were taking place in the UK scene – but which still has Ayers doing all those wonderful things that made his solo career so great! The tunes are fantastic – filled with unusual images, and that sense of removed wit that Kevin always had, and which always made him so far less indulgent than the rest of the prog generation. And while the cover and some of the production almost hint at an AOR approach, the whole thing instead is hiding with a more unique vision underneath – maybe in the way that Phil Manzanera could do the same on his late 70s albums. Like those records, there's a lot of elements here that are hard to compare to anything else – but in a good way, as that's always been the charm of Ayers. Titles include "Ballad Of A Salesman Who Sold Himself", "Rainbow Takeaway", "View From The Mountain", "Goodnight Goodnight", and "Hat Song". That's What You Get Babe Is a record that definitely proves that talents like Kevin Ayers can't be dimmed at all – no matter what the setting! By 1980, Ayers was far from the proggy generation in which he fit so well – but the man was still a hell of a songwriter, and had a voice that was just about the only one that could do his lyrics justice – a bit like Leonard Cohen during this stretch in his career. And like Cohen's mid period records, the album doesn't always go out of its way to provide Kevin with the arrangements and production that might make them shine the most – but that doesn't stop the man himself from bringing the most out of his words – all with a quality that cares nothing about the punk and disco changes that happened in the past few years, and which just focuses on the songs. Titles include "You Never Outrun Your Heart", "Super Salesmen", "Money Money Money", "I'm So Tired", "Where Do The Stars End", and "That's What You Get". CD

Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! The album's got some great early psych in spots, offset with wonderfully mature and sweet lyrics on the love songs – cross-cut with a bit of witty social commentary too! Tracks include "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "Love You To", "Here There & Everywhere", "She Said She Said", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "For No One". CD

Maria BethaniaMaria Bethania (1969) ... LP
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
Early work by Maria Bethania – recorded with a sound that's completely different than any of her later records – and pretty darn groovy, too! The backings here are by the combo of Luiz Carlos Vinhas – the pianist with Som Tres who was exploring a fair bit of rootsy and psychedelic influences in his own work. Here, Vinhas backs Maria with a really wonderful style that mixes heavy percussion with driving piano often set to modes that sway easily between jazzy and folkloric styles – and which often feature a fair bit of bossa influences as well. Bethania's vocals are still deeply rich, and somewhat emotive – but they adjust to this sort of setting with a lighter sense of the groove that we really really love. Titles include a wonderful version of Vinhas' great "Ye Me Le", plus Edu Lobo's "O Tempo E O Rio", and the tracks "Pra Dizer Adeus", "Dois De Fevereiro", "Preconceito", and "Andanca". David BowieDiamond Dogs ... CD
EMI, 1974. Used ... $5.99
David Bowie at his most sinister for the 70s – a landmark set that combines the harder rocking sound of the Ziggy Stardust years with the more sophisticated theatrics of Aladdin Sane – in a style that features some of the darkest, most political work of Bowie's career! There's a depth to the record that goes way beyond the silly, sensational cover image – and there's also a sonic complexity that's wonderful too – a songs slide into each other with a deftness that never fails to amaze us! The album grew out of a failed project based around George Orwell's famous book 1984 – but the rights to that story were denied by the family – so Bowie went in his own directly, and honestly came up with work that was far better than if he'd done any sort of slavish reading of the novel (Rick Wakeman famously failed in that territory – and the Eurhythmics fared just slightly better.) The whole thing's great, and titles include "Diamond Dogs", "1984", "Sweet Thing", "Candidate", "Rebel Rebel", and "Big Brother". CD

✨✧ David BowieLet's Dance ... LP
EMI, 1983. Very Good ... $11.99
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Titles include "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "Without You", "Criminal World", and "Cat People" (in a different take than the soundtrack version.) LP, Vinyl record album

A singles collection, but one that's so strong, so essential, it may well make the album the greatest full length set the Buzzcocks ever issued! All their classics are here – the short, tight, yet tuneful tracks that made these guys such a standout in the early punk years – and which also gave them the sort of wit that few folks could ever match, even all these many years later. CalderaCaldera ... CD
Capitol/EMI (UK), 1976. Used ... $9.99
A jazzy Latin fusion classic – and the first album by the border-crossing combo Caldera! The group featured both North and South American players – coming together in a hard-riffing approach to fusion that rivaled the best fusion combos of both the California and Brazilian scenes at the time. There's a few nice moments that really belie their more southern roots – and recall the choppy fusion of Airto, or the vocal scatting of Flora – but the set's also got a sunny west coast finish, thanks to some wonderful production from Wayne Henderson – who kicks things up in a way that the group hardly matched on later albums! Guest stars include Raul De Souza and Roberto Da Silva – and titles include the funk classic "Coastin", plus "Guanacaste", "Out Of The Blue", "El Juguete", and "Synesthesia". CD

ChipmunksChristmas With The Chipmunks ... CD
EMI, Late 50s. Used ... $1.99
One of THE greatest Christmas albums of all time – and a record that really helped define the Holiday genre for the full length LP! At the time of the set, David Seville and his Chipmunks were almost just a one-off novelty act for 50s AM radio – but this album forever cemented their place in the musical history books – not to mention around the Christmas tree! The gimmick is simple, but effective – as Seville uses sped up tape to create the sound of singing cartoony chipmunks – deconstructing Holiday tunes along the way with a variety of gags, tricks, and mischief. Seville himself plays host to the set, often getting in fights with Chipmunk Alvin – and titles include the classic "The Chipmunk Song", plus "My Two Front Teeth", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells", "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", and "Frosty The Snowman". Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $11.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". Cosmic Eye (Amancio D'Silva)Dream Sequence (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
The most mindblowing work we've ever heard from guitarist Amancio D'Silva – a really freewheeling blend of jazz and Indian music, and a set that goes far beyond most of his other albums! The album definitely lives up to the dream sequence promised by the title – as it features one long track that spins out in a beautiful blend of tablas, sitar, flute, percussion, violin, and Amancio's own great electric guitar! The leader crafts these trippy solos that are a bit like the work of Gabor Szabo, but even more open-ended and exotic – and the group also features some great work on sax from Alan Branscombe, plus violin from John Mayer – who'd worked on previous experiments of this nature with Joe Harriott. Despite the length of the track, the record is never over-indulgent or repetitive at all – as D'Silva constantly shifts the mood and the sounds – creating this wonderful interplay that really makes for a scenic richness throughout – an evocative journey in music that holds us completely rapt all the way through. Two full albums from the overlooked Flys – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too – finally restoring the group's lost musical legacy to all of its late 70s glory! The Flys hail from the UK scene of the late 70s – and recorded in the punk generation, but with a style that's maybe a bit earlier than that – kind of a touch of psych influence, filtered through leaner late 70s, but all with the punch of a power pop record too – a blend that maybe never got the group the attention they deserved at the time, but which really sounds fantastic here! The records are filled with catchy songs that really have an edge – kind of like early Rough Trade singles, or the more tuneful Television songs – and the 2CD set features all the tracks from the albums Waikiki Beach Refugees and Own – plus 27 more bonus tracks! Titles include "Energy Boy", "Fascinate Me", "Looking For New Hearts", "We Don't Mind The Rave", "Beverly", "Through The Windscreen", "Cheap Days", "I Don't Know", "Fun City", "Can I Crash Here", "Love & A Molotov Cocktail", "Program", "Come On Stupid", "Down Your End Of The Phone", "Fly V Fly", "Name Dropping", and lots lots more. Shankar JaikishanRaga Jazz Style ... LP
EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. Titles include "Raga Bhariav", "Raga Kalavati", "Raga Bairagi", "Raga Jaijaiwanti", "Raga Shivranjani", "Raga Todi", and "Raga Malkauns". LP, Vinyl record album

The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". Roulette/EMI (Japan), 1955. Used ... $18.99
One of the best-remembered jazz albums from singer Bev Kelly – partly for the record's great use of guitar by Johnny Smith, but also for the great vocals from Bev herself! The album's one of a few that really set a new standard for small combo jazz in the 50s – different than the bigger band records with singers, but also not nearly as cabaret-styled as some of the other records with a small group behind the vocalist. Smith's tone is wonderful – that moody, mellow magic he did so well – and his pairing here is not unlike that of Barney Kessel with Julie London, but with much more of a New York vibe overall. Includes sessions produced by Lennon in fall of '74, plus the 4 tracks that survived the '73 sessions with Spector. Includes "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Stand By Me", "Rip It Up/Ready Teddy", "Ain't That A Shame", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Slippin' And Slidin'", "Peggy Sue", "Bony Moronie", "Just Because" and more. Ivan LinsCantando Historias ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 2004. New Copy ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums we've heard in years from Ivan Lins – a wonderful live recording that's done with a really personal and honest quality that returns Lins to the glory of his 70s years! The instrumentation alone is a key factor of the set's greatness – as the tunes feature small combo backing that's as warm and spontaneous as Lins' delivery of the tunes. But it's the vocals themselves that really make the set – mellowed a bit with age, but still with an undeniable sense of personality that captures the imagination from the very first word – coming across with incredible power, even if you can't understand the lyrics. Guests on the set include Simone and Zizi Possi – and titles include "Bilhete", "Abre Alas", "Guarde Nos Olhos", "Porta Entreaberta", "Vitoriosa", "Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai", and "Comecar De Novo". CD

Liberty/EMI (UK), Late 50s. Used ... $18.99
Sad moody work from Julie London – 2 late 50s gems back to back on 1 CD! The albums feature Julie in that perfect early mode – just voice, light rhythm, and sad guitar – slowly, sleepily unfolding, in a style that's as lonely as the title of the records. The whole thing's great – 24 tracks of wispy, torchy vocals that perfectly sum up your idea of what a sexy 50s vocalist should sound like! Titles include "Moments Like This", "Lonely Girl", "If I Could Be With You", "It's Good To Want You Bad", "Go Slow", "Lover Man", "Make Love To Me", "It's The Talk Of The Town", "When Your Lover Has Gone", "Remember", "Mean To Me", and "All Alone". Excellent "a go-go" soul from Brit beat group phenom Zoot Money – recorded in a style that was very faithful to his roots in US soul and R&B, but with the usual UK touches. The record was recorded live at the Klook's Kleek nightclub in London – and it's got some of the best work we've heard in this mode from the time. Side two features a tasty "James Brown Medley" with some of James' best funky numbers from the time – plus a funky instrumental reading of "Mashed Potato USA". Milton NascimentoGeraes ... LP
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $33.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of Milton Nascimento's greatest albums of the 70s! The style here is a bit more subdued than on some of his later work – but in a way that's really majestic and soulful, showing the further development of Milton's unique idiom as he becomes one of the cornerstones of 70s MPB. There's a sense of power here that's very subtle, but which is pure Nascimento all the way – a maturing approach to both songwriting and singing that are light years from the music of Brazil a decade before. Filled with great material – and includes the tracks "Caldera" and "Circo Marimbondo", both of which have a nice swinging groove, plus "Viver De Amor", "Carro De Boi", "Fazenda", "Volver A Los 17", and "Minas Geraes". Milton NascimentoMilagre Dos Peixes – Gravado Ao Vivo ... LP
EMI (Brazil), 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Live genius from Milton Nascimento – an album cut with core instrumental backings from Som Imaginario, plus larger orchestrations of the sort you might hear on some of his studio albums from the time! The concert sound and setting here is amazing – a blend of the sharper rocking edges of Som Imaginario, and some of the fuller, softer strings in the orchestra – often recorded with some rougher edges than on Nascimento's studio albums, in a way that occasionally creates the same urgency that you might find on records from other mid 70s MPB giants, and which weren't always apparent in Milton's music. The double-length set is a wonderful testament to Nascimento's continuing brilliance in the 70s – and titles include "Pablo", "Outubro", "Milagre Dos Peixes", "Cais", "San Vincete", "Sacramento", "Sabe Voce", "Bodas", and "Viola Violar". O'JaysSerious (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Expansion (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $9.99
The O'Jays hit a bit of a new jack mode with this late 80s set – picking up the beats, and giving themselves a chunkier rhythm than usual – but all while keeping things in that laidback territory that suits their famous vocals so well! The mellowest cuts here are our favorites – as they remind us that the O'Jays perfection never falters, but is especially nice when the trio are right up front, and really able to dominate a tune with their well-tuned sense of harmony and warm interplay! The group members wrote a number of the songs on the set – a nice change from the Gamble & Huff era – and the younger Gerald Levert helped out a bit on the album, which might explain some of the Levert-like touches in the grooves. Titles include "Out Of My Mind", "Leave It Alone", "Fading", "Rainbow", "Friend Of A Friend", "Have You Had Your Love Today", and "Serious Hold On Me". CD features bonus tracks – "Serious Hold On Me (single mix)", "Serious Hold On Me (inst)", "Out Of My Mind (radio)", "Out Of My Mind (Soul 2 mix)", "Have You Had Your Love Today (club)", and "Have You Had Your Love Today (power radio mix)". EMI/Soundway (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The People Rock Outfit really knock it out of the park with this dark-edged classic from the 70s – one of the heaviest albums we've heard from the Nigerian scene at the time, and a record that's almost got more of a South African spirit overall! These guys effortlessly mix together funk and psych – the former in these stark, forward-moving rhythnm that are mighty nice – the latter in these long-spun guitar lines that have a nice fuzzy vibe, as the solos cascade effortlessly from the hands of the guitarist! Vocals are all in English – sometimes with a slow-stepping approach that's very moody, more often in a lively spirit to match the rhythms – and the record also features a bit of guest work on moog and Hammond, which really adds a lot to the sound. Titles include "Blacky Joe", "Mary Jane", "Faded Jeans", "Freedom", "Movement", "Tell Me", "Midnight Woman", and "Looking Round". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic set from Horace Silver – one in which his quintet is expanded by some great guest work from trombonist JJ Johnson! Johnson's at the height of his 60s powers here – blowing with that lean, soulful style that always made any record sparkle – and although he's only on half of the tracks on the date, his presence is more than worth the heavy billing he gets on the cover! Other great members of the group include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor, and rhythm from Bob Cranshaw on bass and Roger Humphries on drums – all coming together with that wonderful 60s Silver groove. The set's filled with sweetly grooving originals by Horace – a blueprint for the exotic style of soul jazz he helped to forge at the time – great writing all around, on titles that include "Mo Joe", "Nutville", "Bonita", "The African Queen", and "Pretty Eyes". VenturesVentures Play Telstar – The Lonely Bull & Others/Ventures In Space ... CD
Dolton/EMI, 1962/1963. Used ... $7.99
The Ventures Play Telstar was the Ventures ninth record and it offers the usual mix of covers of some of the most popular songs of the day. The guitar still leads as the main sound on these tracks but they do expand the instrumentation to include organ, trumpet, mandolins and harpsichord as well. They sing a little on some of the tracks but they mainly stay in the instrumental realm. Tracks include "Telstar", "The Lonely Bull", "Mexico", "Calcutta", "Apache", "Never On A Sunday", "Tequila", "Green Onions", "Let There Be Drums", and "Red River Rock". The Ventures In Space is a really wonderful idea – especially given that the quartet had so much energy in their guitars at this point, they could easily make it to the moon! The set's cooking with great little numbers that really keep with the space theme of the title – tracks like "One Step Beyond", "Twilight Zone", "The Fourth Dimension", "Moon Child", and "Solar Race" – all as captivating as they sound from the titles, and served up here with that sweet mix of guitar twang and jamming that made The Ventures so great back in the day!
