✨✧ AnimalsComplete Animals – The Complete Mickie Most Productions For EMI ... CD
EMI (UK), 1964/1965. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive amount of early work by The Animals – brought together in one overstuffed package with some unreleased tracks as well! The group here have a great rough sound – much more bluesy than in later years, which turns out to be a perfect setting for the young Eric Burdon – whose vocals soar out wonderfully over a mix of original tunes and remakes of American classics by folks like Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley, and others! Producer Mickie Most really knows how to keep the right sort of edge on the tunes – lots of raw power in the instrumentation, especially the Hammond and guitar – and a stark, dark quality to Eric's vocals that went onto become the stuff of legend. Package features 40 tracks in all – with titles that include "I Believe To My Soul", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Club A Go Go", "For Miss Caulker", "Feel", "Boom Boom", "Don't Want Much", "It's My Life", "House Of The Rising Sun", "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place", and "I'm Gonna Change The World". Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

Kevin AyersRainbow Takeaway ... LP
Harvest/EMI, 1978. Sealed ... $28.99
An overlooked album from Kevin Ayers – a record that's a bit out of time, given all the changes that were taking place in the UK scene – but which still has Ayers doing all those wonderful things that made his solo career so great! The tunes are fantastic – filled with unusual images, and that sense of removed wit that Kevin always had, and which always made him so far less indulgent than the rest of the prog generation. And while the cover and some of the production almost hint at an AOR approach, the whole thing instead is hiding with a more unique vision underneath – maybe in the way that Phil Manzanera could do the same on his late 70s albums. Like those records, there's a lot of elements here that are hard to compare to anything else – but in a good way, as that's always been the charm of Ayers. Titles include "Ballad Of A Salesman Who Sold Himself", "Rainbow Takeaway", "View From The Mountain", "Goodnight Goodnight", and "Hat Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Apple/EMI, 1966. Used Gatefold ... $6.99
Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! The album's got some great early psych in spots, offset with wonderfully mature and sweet lyrics on the love songs – cross-cut with a bit of witty social commentary too! Tracks include "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "Love You To", "Here There & Everywhere", "She Said She Said", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "For No One". This is also an enhanced version that includes a mini-Revolver documentary. CD

A loungey album of vocals from this obscure Brazilian vocalist – and very much what you'd expect from the sexy cover! David BowieLet's Dance ... LP
EMI, 1983. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Titles include "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "Without You", "Criminal World", and "Cat People" (in a different take than the soundtrack version.) LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieStation To Station (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Ryko, 1976. Used ... $6.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". EMI (Brazil), 1975. Used ... $19.99
An obscure batch of jazzy samba tracks from Nonato Buzar – an overlooked talent who's one of Brazil's best soul samba artists of the 70s! The record's got a really strong presentation style – Nonato's guitar is upfront in the mix, and he sings lead vocals on most cuts, augmented by some occasional female vocals, and some ensemble singing. The production has a nice groovy sound with its roots in late 60s MPB – but the overall groove has clearly been influenced by other 70s work in Brazil. Titles include "Ceu Vermelho", "Ta Chegando A Hora", "Estou Triste Sim", and the silly "Le Premier Safari De Caroline De Monaco". CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $24.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Joao Donato – pre-bossa tunes with a jazzy dancing groove! The style here mixes together swinging jazz with other elements of Brazilian rhythms – percussion grooving with piano, accordion, and some very nice work on clarinet – jazzy and swinging, but with some earthier touches in the rhythms too. The style is at once rootsy and modern, in that unique blend of styles that Brazilian groups seemed to virtually invent! A great look at Donato's pre-bossa career – with titles that include "Baiao", "Peguei Um Ita No Norte", "Baiao Da Garoa", and "Comigo E Assim". CD

Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

Sweet 70s grooving from Brazilian singer Eva – a bit of soul, a bit of easy, all styled together nicely by orchestrations from the magical maestro Gaya! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Titles include "O Homem Do Tempo", "Vinte Leguas", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Olha Eu Aqui Oh Oh Oh", "Talisma", and Sonho Lindo". CD

Beautiful stuff from one of Sweden's greatest jazz artists! Gullin's known mostly as a baritone player, but on this rare 1973 outing, he plays piano in a number of different settings – all touched with a uniquely creative vision that you don't always encounter on some of his earlier recordings on the large horn. There's slight bits of Monk and Herbie Nichols here, but Gullin also adds some wonderful bits of lyricism – which are quickly picked up by bandmates Lee Konitz, Bernt Rosengren, Red Mitchell, and Island Ostlund. A wonderful session throughout – still incredibly fresh, and unlike anything else we can think of. Titles include "Solvarm Vils", "Like Grass", "The Hambo Combo", "Blue Mail", and "Subway". Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Johnny HartmanAnd I Thought About You ... CD
Roost/EMI, 1958. Used ... $5.99
An obscure set from Johnny Hartman – cut in the years before his more famous Impulse recordings, and with a mellower, lusher sound that casts his incredible vocals in a warm romantic setting! The orchestrations are by the little-known Rudy Traylor, and have a full feel that's similar to other Roost and Roulette vocal sessions of the time – a bit jazz, but also with these darker, moodier corners that are perfect for late-nite listening – and which put those rich Hartman vocals in really sublime territory. Johnny serves up a sad-tinged batch of tunes that includes "Little Girl Blue", "But Beautiful", "Long Ago & Far Away", "I Should Care", "To Each His Own", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". CD

EMI, 2000. Used ... $2.99
Hunter's getting a lot more sophisticated in his style, and is moving past the heavy funky sound of early days – to a mix of soulful styles that opens him up a lot more. This sextet session features drummer Leon Parker, who always works well with Hunter – plus tenorist Peter Apfelbaum, and percussionists Stephen Chopek and Robert Perkins. Titles include "Two For Bleu", "Al Green", "Rendezvous Avec La Verite", "Flau Flau", and "Cloud Splitter". Also features a nice solo version of Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free". CD

Shankar JaikishanRaga Jazz Style ... LP
EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. Titles include "Raga Bhariav", "Raga Kalavati", "Raga Bairagi", "Raga Jaijaiwanti", "Raga Shivranjani", "Raga Todi", and "Raga Malkauns". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bert JanschRare Conundrum (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The third Bert Jansch album for Charisma in the early-to-mid 70s – in more of a laidback, UK folk style than the Cali flavored previous couple of LPs – and a record that's just as wonderful, and possibly the best of the three! The warmth that made his other work for Charisma so gratifying is still an integral element of the A Rare Conundrum – with more fragile melodies, and tunes steeped a bit more in traditional elements, including acoustic guitar, violin and banjo. Beautiful! Titles include "Daybreak", "One To A Hundred", "Pretty Saro", "Doctor, Doctor", "3AM", "St Fiacre", "If You See My Love", "Poor Mouth", "Cat & Mouse", "Three Chord Trick", "Lost Love" and more. CD includes 3 bonus tracks – "Three Dreamers", "Dragonfly" and "Candyman". CD

✨✧ Bert JanschSanta Barbara Honeymoon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Bert Jansch's second mid 70s effort for Charisma, and also the second title that's an ode to Southern Cali from the Scottish born folk singer/guitar player – and a great one! Although LA turnaround had it's moments of larger instrumentation, Jansch's voice and guitar was a defining characteristic – which is still the case on Santa Barbara Honeymoon, but it's a bit more extroverted in the group instrumentation. Bert's vocals are a bit more exuberant, too, and his impeccable guitar playing gets plenty of space in arrangements that include additional guitars, bass, drums keys, some synths and a little bit of brass. Titles include "Love Anew", "Mary And Joseph", "Be My Friend", "You Are My Sunshine", "Lost And Gone", "When The Teardrop Fell", "Build Another Band", "Dynamite", "Buckrabbit" and more. CD includes 6 bonus tracks: an alternate version of "Build Another Band", plus 5 tracks live from Montreux in 1975. CD

An excellent Dallas Austin mid 90s soul cut, from Joi's Pendulum Vibe LP, that never seemed to make a big impact. While the NuSoul scene was just in it's infancy then, and Dallas Austin isn't always associated with it, this nice downtempo number chugs along nicely on a spare, bass heavy groove. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Jongo TrioJongo Trio (1972) ... CD
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1972. New Copy ... $3.99
The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". John Lennon & Yoko OnoWedding Album (Japanese pressing) ... LP
EMI (Japan), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
One of the weirdest, most experimental albums ever from John Lennon and Yoko Ono – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the nature of their other music! The set's got a cover and title that might make you expect more conventional modes – after all, everyone is familiar with the concept of a wedding album – but instead, the whole thing's a wonderful freakout that almost makes "Revolution Number 9" from the White Album feel like a pop single! The record features two side-long tracks – each very open and almost like performance art – "John & Yoko", which features lots of analogue electronics, and the couple shouting each others' names in this way that's surprisingly moving – and "Amsterdam", which is a longer songform, with surprisingly beautiful vocals from Yoko! LP, Vinyl record album

Logic SystemVenus ... CD
EMI/We Want Sounds (Switzerland), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99
A really beautiful record from the Japanese electro scene at the start of the 80s – a record that's got some of the catchy synth modes of the period, but which also has a fair bit of other elements going on too! Logic System features keyboards from Hideki Matsutake – best known for his keyboard programming with YMO – and here, his style expands into some wider modes that almost remind us of our favorite French soundtrack styles of the period – slight currents of sentiment, and a richness of expression that goes way past the more familiar simpler forms of the keyboards. There's definitely some catchier tunes too, and the balance is very nice – on a set that's mostly instrumental, save for some occasional vocoded bits. Titles inlcude "Metamorphism", "Equivalent", "Be Yourself", "Prophet", "Morpheus", and "Venus". CD

Roulette/EMI, 1957. Used ... $11.99
A real corker from Machito – a set that's got a lot more bite and earthy fire than some of his other albums of the 50s – as you might be able to guess from the cover and the title! The record definitely lives up to the Afro-Cuban promise on the front – thanks to very hip arrangements from Mario BAuza and AK Salim – who balance core rhythmic elements with some great modern jazz solo contributions – from key players who include Johnny Griffin on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Joe Newman on trumpet, and Eddie Bert on trombone – all coming together under Machito's leadership with a sound that's much bolder than most of his work in a straighter Latin mode! The album's a key meeting of styles – as powerful today as it was when first recorded – and tracks include the great "Congo Mulence", a very tight groover – plus "Turuato", "Frenzy", "Cannonology", "Minor Rama", and "Wild Jungle". You know, despite the fact that this one was recorded in the mid 80s, when we felt that Tania's great jazzy vocal style was being buried in excessive arrangements – in retrospect, it's actually got some darn nice moments. These include the great "Tanoca Vignette", a lively number that features some excellent vocal/piano interplay by Tania, produced with a bright style that brings out the best elements of the song. Another nice one is the cut "Bronx", which has a good fusiony groove to it. Other titles include "Valeu", "I Should Not Call You", and "Just Get Up", which was produced by George Duke.
