Emi MakabeAnniversary ... CD
Greenleaf, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A vocal jazz session, but one with a very different flavor than usual – given that Emi Makabe plays the Japanese stringed instrument shamisen, and also sings most of the lyrics in Japanese! The rest of the group is unusual, too – as the quartet features Victor Goncalves alternating between piano and accordion, and Kenny Wollesen alternating between drums and vibes – mixed with the bass of Thomas Morgan, in a way that creates a wonderfully fluid sense of tone and color throughout the set. Titles include "Joy", "Moon & I", "Mielcke", "Rino", "I Saw The Light", "Flash", and "Treeing". CD

Honest Jons (UK), 1910s/1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99
A collection of tracks that amount to some of incredibly deep audio archaeology – a wonderful, consciousness wakening collection of globe spanning 78s from the first half of the 20th Century – all from the darkest corners of the EMI Vaults! Honest Jons does an impressive job of collecting recordings that are first and foremost exciting pieces of music – and they reportedly spent a couple of years going through thousands and thousands of 78s and to put this thing together. It was worth the effort! The album includes recordings from China in the 10s, Bali and London in the 20s, Constantinople, Kenya and Spain in the 30s, Uganda & Trinidad in the 50s, and much more from each decade in many parts of the world. Cuban rumbas, Middle Eastern & African string tunes, more pop oriented British tunes, vocal and pop with a global focus. Wonderful stuff! Titles include "The English Sound Table" by GU Hsu, "Lagu Kebiar" by Gamelan Gong, "Rumba Negra" by Sacasas, "Laughing" by Vemngopal Chari, "Different Kind Of Motor Car Noises" by Vengopal Chari, "The Queen's Canary" by Mighty Sparrow and more. Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Syd BarrettOpel ... LP
Harvest/EMI (UK), Late 60s/1988. Sealed ... $49.99
A Syd Barrett treasure trove – and an essential compilation of unreleased work that's a much-needed companion to Barrett's classic albums for EMI! The material here is all from the years 1968 to 1970 – tracks recorded before, during, and around the sessions that later became The Madcap Laughs and Barrett – but which often also show a wider-ranging side of Syd's talents, especially on the few demo recordings – which offer an even more personal glimpse of the artist trying to find his way. Instrumentation is a bit more acoustic than on Barrett's full albums, but even the acoustic guitar is played with these dark tones that have the same sinister quality as the chords he brought to Pink Floyd – maybe even more striking here without any fuzz, as they resonate alongside Syd's offbeat lyrics. Titles include "Rats", "Golden Hair", "Opel", "Clowns & Jugglers", "Birdie Hop", "Let's Spilt", and "Swan Lee". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI/Capitol, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
A harmony heaven way to enjoy the Holiday! The group's version of Christmas has to be one of the best-ever recorded in rock and roll – and given the undercurrent of sadness that was coming forth in their non-Holiday hits of the period, the style here is perfect to fit the melancholy mood of the Christmas tunes – even some of the more upbeat numbers! Production is great too – beautiful enough to hold up strongly after all these years – and titles include "Blue Christmas", "Merry Christmas Baby", "Little Saint Nick", "Santa's Beard", "We Three Kings", "Frosty The Snowman", and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". EMI, 1992. Used ... $6.99
A pretty sweet batch of early 90s R&B from Benet – which is the brother and sister duo of Eric and Lisa Benet – a couple years before Eric would conquer the charts as a solo act! It's a nice little record that's warm and good-natured, and produced with a bright and smooth, but not overly slick vibe. Musicians include Jeff Lorber, Freddie Hubbard, Paul Jackson Jr, Dave Koz and other major players – so you know the sessions are legit – and the family vocal chemistry is pretty sweet. Titles include a modern R&B take on "Rainy Days And Sundays", plus "Only Want To Be With You", "I Remember When", "Never Get Enough", He Said, She Said", "In The Spring", "'Til We Meet Again" and more. Also includes a bonus instrumental version of "Only Want To Be With You". CD

David BowieStation To Station (remastered) ... CD
EMI, 1976. Used ... $6.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". EMI (Brazil), 1975. Used ... $14.99
An obscure batch of jazzy samba tracks from Nonato Buzar – an overlooked talent who's one of Brazil's best soul samba artists of the 70s! The record's got a really strong presentation style – Nonato's guitar is upfront in the mix, and he sings lead vocals on most cuts, augmented by some occasional female vocals, and some ensemble singing. The production has a nice groovy sound with its roots in late 60s MPB – but the overall groove has clearly been influenced by other 70s work in Brazil. Titles include "Ceu Vermelho", "Ta Chegando A Hora", "Estou Triste Sim", and the silly "Le Premier Safari De Caroline De Monaco". CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $19.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". A great batch of early samba tracks from Paulinho Da Viola – a set that features some great fuller backings from Maestro Gaya, in a way that really warms up the sound! The appeal of Paulinho's vocals and guitar from other early 70s albums is still very firmly in place – and Gaya adds in some light strings, bits of woodwinds, and other nice elements – all used sparely, but in really wonderful ways that spark up some of the darker corners of the music. The tunes are all well-penned, and quite catchy – and there's a great sound here that goes beyond any simple samba cliches. Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

Sweet 70s grooving from Brazilian singer Eva – a bit of soul, a bit of easy, all styled together nicely by orchestrations from the magical maestro Gaya! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Titles include "O Homem Do Tempo", "Vinte Leguas", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Olha Eu Aqui Oh Oh Oh", "Talisma", and Sonho Lindo". CD

Excellent work by Lionel Hampton – one of his standout French recordings from the 50s, handled with a quality level that was sometimes missing from his American work! Hamp's on both vibes and piano in the set, and also does a bit of singing as well – playing with a swinging lineup that includes the great Guy Lafitte on tenor sax, Claude Bolling on piano, and Billy Mackel on guitar. Tracks include "Le Piege", "Jazz Stars News", "Panama", "Genevieve", "Jam For Brigitte", "What's New", and "Hamp Swings The Bells". CD

Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Johnny HartmanAnd I Thought About You ... CD
Roost/EMI, 1958. Used ... $3.99
An obscure set from Johnny Hartman – cut in the years before his more famous Impulse recordings, and with a mellower, lusher sound that casts his incredible vocals in a warm romantic setting! The orchestrations are by the little-known Rudy Traylor, and have a full feel that's similar to other Roost and Roulette vocal sessions of the time – a bit jazz, but also with these darker, moodier corners that are perfect for late-nite listening – and which put those rich Hartman vocals in really sublime territory. Johnny serves up a sad-tinged batch of tunes that includes "Little Girl Blue", "But Beautiful", "Long Ago & Far Away", "I Should Care", "To Each His Own", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". CD

Jimmy Bo HorneBest Of The TK Years 1975 to 1985 ... CD
TK/EMI (UK), Late 70s. Used ... $14.99
Stunning Miami grooves from the legendary Jimmy Bo Horne – one of the key figures in the southern club scene of the 70s! Jimmy's got a groove that's very much his own on the set – a snapping, almost clapping sort of rhythm picked up from the George McCrae and KC camps at TK Records – but one that's honed into a tighter, smoother, almost sexier sort of approach overall. This sound's heard to best effect on Jimmy's super-huge hit "Dance Across The Floor" – but it's also pretty well adapted to just about any number, and kept Mr Horne going strong through the biggest years of the TK Miami scene. The set features a total of 19 tracks in all – including "Dance Across The Floor", "Get Happy", "Gimme Some (part 1)", "Spank (1980 rmx)", "Ask The Birds And The Bees", "Goin' Home For Love", "Rocket In The Pocket", "You Get Me Hot", "Music To Make Love By", "Don't Worry About It", and "I Get Lifted". Shankar JaikishanRaga Jazz Style ... LP
EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. Titles include "Raga Bhariav", "Raga Kalavati", "Raga Bairagi", "Raga Jaijaiwanti", "Raga Shivranjani", "Raga Todi", and "Raga Malkauns". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bert JanschRare Conundrum (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A great late 70s set from Bert Jansch – a set that's maybe a bit of a return to his roots, but which also really marks Jansch as a much stronger vocalist than he ever was in the early days! There's this confidence and maturity to the lyrics that's really great – Bert inflecting things with that voice that must have been one of the most unusual on the UK scene, even in the smaller folk rock world of his roots – and although the instrumentation is relatively lean, the tunes have a fullness and gentle sort of majesty that's very different than 60s Jansch in a similar mode. The whole thing's wonderful – maybe a bit overlooked in the year when punk was exploding – but proof that some of the more timeless artists of the generation were still turning out impeccable work. Titles include "Daybreak", "One To A Hundred", "Pretty Saro", "Doctor, Doctor", "3AM", "St Fiacre", "If You See My Love", "Poor Mouth", "Cat & Mouse", "Three Chord Trick", and "Lost Love". CD includes 3 bonus tracks – "Three Dreamers", "Dragonfly", and "Candyman". CD

✨✧ Bert JanschSanta Barbara Honeymoon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A real shift in modes for the legendary Bert Jansch – as you might guess from the sunny Santa Barbara on the cover – which is a long way from the rainy roots of Bert's music in the UK! Jansch steps out here as maybe more of a singer than before, but still gets in plenty of his amazing work on guitar – on tunes that show a more confident approach, but one that's never too slick, nor commercial. This is hardly folk-into-AOR – and instead just uses the right sort of Cali touches to augment the genius of Jansch, without getting in his way at all – at a level that also has Bert really sounding wonderful on vocals. Titles include "Love Anew", "Mary And Joseph", "Be My Friend", "You Are My Sunshine", "Lost And Gone", "When The Teardrop Fell", "Build Another Band", "Dynamite", and "Buckrabbit" and more. CD includes 6 bonus tracks – an alternate version of "Build Another Band", plus 5 tracks live from Montreux in 1975. CD

Jongo TrioJongo Trio (1972) ... CD
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1972. New Copy ... $3.99
The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". JoyceAnos 80s (Feminina/Agua E Luz/Tardes Cariocas/Saudade Do Futuro/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
EMI/Discobertas (Brazil), Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $44.99
An incredible collection – four albums that feature this amazing singer at her height, along with bonus tracks too! First up is Feminina – one of Joyce's greatest albums – and maybe the first record we'd point to for anyone interested in her music! The set's an incredible blend of vocals, acoustic guitar, and these lightly gentle arrangements – all at this new level of expression that still recognizes Joyce's bossa roots, but really moves beyond with all the sophistication of MPB in the 70s! The sound of the whole thing is wonderful – completely transcendent and mesmerizing right from the start – and Joyce penned most of the tunes and handled the arrangements – with help from Gilson Peranzzetta on a few tracks. Titles include the classic "Feminina", plus "Essa Mulher", "Coracao De Crianca", "Aldeia De Ogum", "Compor", and "Misterios". Next is Agua E Luz – an amazing mix of jazzy vocals, sparkling production, and beautiful light guitar – the younger Joyce at her best – in a wonderfully uncluttered style that makes the record a treasure all the way through! Joyce sings and plays acoustic guitar – and gets these lightly jazzy backings that often feature a bit of electricity, but never too much to dampen the acoustic heart of the record – that great sense of personality that's always made Joyce unlike any other Brazilian artist we can think of – even though so many others have tried to copy her style over the years! Joyce did all the arrangements herself, Sivuca guests on one track – and titles include "Muito Prazer", "Samba De Gago", "Agua E Luz", "Mais Uma Vez, Mais Uma Voiz", "Banho Maria", and "Meio A Meio". Tardes Cariocas is a set recorded during the same key stretch as her early 80s albums for EMI – yet much more obscure! The album's got the same brilliant blend of jazz and bossa phrasing as her classics Agua E Luz and Feminina – and really brings Joyce's beautiful vocals to the forefront, with a strong focus on that fluid, jazzy style we totally love! Acoustic guitar is key to the instrumentation, yet there's also a few electric touches on keyboards – yet used quite softly, so that the presence of Joyce really dominates the record – but with a power that's greater than some of her more solo sets. Wonderful throughout –a nd with cuts that include "Nacional Kid", "Curioso", "Baracumbarra", "Tardes Cariocas", "Luz Do Chao", and "Ela". Saudade Do Futuro is a totally hard to find Joyce album from the mid 80's. Recorded for the obscure Pointer label in Brazil, this set has more of a modern fusion feel than some of her classic recordings that we stock, but Joyce's voice is still sweet and lovely, and her songwriting's as strong as always. The set includes her classic cut "Fa Da Bahia", plus other nice tracks like "Peixe Estrela", "Sonora Garoa", "Quadrantes", "Minha Gata Rita Lee", "Stone Washed, and "Tema Para Jobim", which has a guest performance by Milton Nascimento! Set features 7 bonus tracks – recordings done with Viva Voz, Antonio Adolfo, Mario Adnet, and others – with titles that include "Acalanto", "Terra", "Pega Leve", "Canconeta", "Revendo Amigos", "Diga Ai Companheiro", and "Planeta Azul". The sound here is tight and dark – tuneful songs, but with a spirit that flows from the 45 underground of the post-punk years – never polished too much for a major label, and maybe with that special spirit of darkness that a group like Echo & The Bunnymen could make when they hit the big time. One of the greatest albums we've heard in years from Ivan Lins – a wonderful live recording that's done with a really personal and honest quality that returns Lins to the glory of his 70s years! The instrumentation alone is a key factor of the set's greatness – as the tunes feature small combo backing that's as warm and spontaneous as Lins' delivery of the tunes. But it's the vocals themselves that really make the set – mellowed a bit with age, but still with an undeniable sense of personality that captures the imagination from the very first word – coming across with incredible power, even if you can't understand the lyrics. Guests on the set include Simone and Zizi Possi – and titles include "Bilhete", "Abre Alas", "Guarde Nos Olhos", "Porta Entreaberta", "Vitoriosa", "Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai", and "Comecar De Novo". CD

There's definitely some catchier tunes too, and the balance is very nice – on a set that's mostly instrumental, save for some occasional vocoded bits. MaysaCanecao Apresenta Maysa/Maysa (1969) ... CD
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1969. Used ... $18.99
2 nice slices of Brazilian pop from 1969 – back to back albums by the enigmatic Maysa! Both albums are from a time when she cut more than a few great recordings in a variety of mode, from lively bossa to dancing samba to English-influenced groovy pop tunes! Canecao Apresenta Maysa is a live album, and there's loads of great numbers on the set – with titles that include "Dindi", "Light My Fire", "Eu E A Brisa", "Chao De Estrelas", "Meu Mundo Caiu", "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", "Demais", and "Dia Das Rosas". That album is followed up by a self-titled set from the same year – a great little album from Maysa, one that features hipper arrangements than usual, from the hands of Egberto Gismonti, Antonio Adolfo, and Lindolfo Gaya. The sound is sort of bossa-baroque, with that emotive tone that Maysa brought to her vocals, and which established her as a bridge between older Brazilian styles of singing, and some of the flatter ones used during the bossa era. Titles include "Um Dia", "Indi", "Voce Nem Viu", "Tema Triste", "Rosa Branca", "Catavento", and "Eu E O Tempo". CD
