Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

A very cool early 10" album from The Animals – the group's second in this format, and never originally issued in the US! The group are at their young, gritty best here – with lots of bluesy currents in the music, thanks to Alan Price on Hammond – topped with soulful vocals from the mighty Eric Burdon, who never fails to blow us away. Titles include the great "I'm Mad Again", plus "Bury My Body", "She Said Yeah", and "I'm In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Cilla BlackCilla Black 1963-1973 – The Abbey Road Decade ... CD
EMI (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. Used 3 CDs ... $16.99
Amazing British pop! Forget Petula Clark, forget Sandie Shaw, forget Shirley Bassey – we love Cilla Black like no other! Cilla's got an incredible voice – deep, gutsy, and not without a touch of soul. Her early sessions for EMI during the 60s are some of the finest British vocals ever recorded – nearly all of them produced by the great George Martin, over a wonderful assortment of tunes by 60s composers like Bacharach & David or Lennon & McCartney, who always had a sweet spot for Cilla. This massive 3CD set features 65 classic tunes by Cilla – packaged with a great set of notes and photos on the material. Titles include "Love of The Loved", "It's For You", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "For No One", "Over My Head", "Liverpool Lullaby", "Child Of Mine", "Step Inside Love", "Silly, Wasn't I?", "Something Tells Me", "Poor Boy", "All My Love", "Night Time Is Here", and "Suffer Now I Must". David BowieLet's Dance ... LP
EMI, 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Titles include "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "Without You", "Criminal World", and "Cat People" (in a different take than the soundtrack version.) LP, Vinyl record album

Peter BrownGet Funky With Me – The Best Of The TK Years ... CD
TK/EMI (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $24.99
Get down with the sound of Peter Brown – one of the funkiest white cats on the Miami soul scene of the 70s! Peter originally hailed from the Chicago area, but he got the call down to Miami with his classic club groover "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me" – a compelling blend of snappy rhythms, soulful horns, weird keyboard bits, and sweet female vocals. That track instantly set Peter up large – reputedly the first 12" single to sell a million copies – and Brown followed the groove with a whole host of other clubby classics cooked up in the Miami TK studios! This set brings together 9 of Peter's extended dancefloor cuts from the 70s – plus 2 more remixes from later years – for a total of 11 tracks that include "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me", plus "Dance With Me", "Love In Our Hearts", "Stargazer", "Fantasy Love Affair", and "You Should Do It". Kate BushKick Inside ... CD
EMI, 1978. Used ... $1.99
The album that introduced the world to Kate Bush – and a set that both has the lady staking some great ground of her own, but maybe also using a few more familiar modes to get her message across! Kate's vocals are already soaring all over her octave range, with those distinct inflections that are full of quiet drama – but there's also some instrumental touches from Brit sound library and studio talents – who give the whole thing a sense of polish that's offset by the very personal approach of Bush. Titles include the hit "Wuthering Heights" – plus "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", "The Saxophone Song", "James & The Cold Gun", "Feel It", "L'Amour Looks Something Like You", and "The Kick Inside". The young Kate Bush is in fantastic form here – looking a bit goofy on the cover, sure – but firmly establishing that sound that would make the lady a genre unto herself! It's hard to believe a record like this was coming out during major years for punk and disco – but that's also what's made it so timeless over the decades – kind of a fresh chapter of discovery, with that unabashed sense of openness that marked Kate's music in these early years. Titles include "Kashka From Baghdad", "Hammer Horror", "Coffee Homeground", "Fullhouse", "In The Warm Room", "Wow", "Oh England My Lionheart", "In Search Of Peter Pan", and "Don't Push Your Foot On The Heartbrake". CalderaCaldera ... CD
Capitol/EMI (UK), 1976. Used ... $14.99
A jazzy Latin fusion classic – and the first album by the border-crossing combo Caldera! The group featured both North and South American players – coming together in a hard-riffing approach to fusion that rivaled the best fusion combos of both the California and Brazilian scenes at the time. There's a few nice moments that really belie their more southern roots – and recall the choppy fusion of Airto, or the vocal scatting of Flora – but the set's also got a sunny west coast finish, thanks to some wonderful production from Wayne Henderson – who kicks things up in a way that the group hardly matched on later albums! Guest stars include Raul De Souza and Roberto Da Silva – and titles include the funk classic "Coastin", plus "Guanacaste", "Out Of The Blue", "El Juguete", and "Synesthesia". CD

Sonny CrissGo Man! (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $8.99
A great little album that's as hip as its cover image – one of 3 seminal mid 50s recordings for Imperial by LA altoist Sonny Criss! At this point in his career, Criss had a sharp-edged sound that could easily rival the best work by Sonny Stitt or Charlie Parker on the alto sax – but he also had a groove that was a bit more spacious, and a tone that was slightly more raspy – a wonderful quality that we can only describe as Criss-esque, recorded perfectly in the Imperial studios! The group here is a tight quartet – with Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums – and Criss' solos are brilliant throughout! Titles include "Wailin With Joe", "The Man I Love", "Blues For Rose", "Blue Prelude", and "Summertime". CD

Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $6.99
One of Sonny Criss' classic albums for Imperial – a brilliant batch of LA bop from the 50s, with an impeccable sound throughout! Criss had a tone like nobody else on the alto – and here, he's at the height of his early powers – neither blowing too hard, nor going for boppish tricks – and instead settling into an amazing groove with a sense of power, confidence, and extreme "rightness" as to his choice of notes! The album's right on the money throughout – exactly the kind of set that lives up to our lifetime devotion to Sonny's music – and the whole thing's great, with tracks that include "West Coast Blues", "Criss Cross", "Ham's Blues", and "Blue Friday". EMI (Brazil), 1980. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
Mellow electric jazz and laidback fusion from Brazilian guitarist Helio Delmiro – working here in the tight mode of some of the best recordings of the 80s fusion generation from Brazil! Some of the cuts are fairly straight jazz – like the record's laidback takes on "Epistrophy" and "Body And Soul" – but there's others tunes by Brazilian writers, like Victor Assis Brasil's "Pro Zeca", and Milton Nascimento's "Tarde", which take off in a sweetly soulful groove that makes the album well worth seeking out. Titles include "Esperando", "Waltzin", and "Emotiva No 1". LP, Vinyl record album

DorisDid You Give The World Some Love Today Baby ... LP
EMI (Sweden), 1970. Sealed ... $18.99
One of the grooviest albums ever recorded – a set that's funky, offbeat, and has way more to offer than most American album of the time! Swedish singer Doris really knocked it out of the park with this one – working with arranger Bert Egerbladh, who gives the set some nicely unusual grooves, often augmented by his own work on organ! The album is famous amongst the break crowd for the track "You Never Come Closer", which has a deep groove and weird fuzzy piano that's been sampled by more than a few folks over the years – but over and above that, the record's an excellent batch of off-beat pop tunes – and it feels like some of the nuttier work that came out on Capitol Records during the late 70s, as evidenced by the Blue Juice/Blue Breaks love of the record in the past decade or two. Tracks include "Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby", "I'm Pushing You Out", "Beatmaker", "Don't", "Waiting At The Station", "Bath", "You Never Come Closer", and "I Wish I Knew". Blue Note/EMI, 1960. Used ... $5.99
One of the greatest albums ever by pianist Kenny Drew – a record that's as noteworthy for the contributions of the sidemen as it is for the efforts of the leader! Drew's a player who often worked mostly in trio formats – but here, he's hitting hard with a righteous Blue Note power – thanks to the presence of Hank Mobley on tenor and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, both of whom really give the record an edge! Drew's lyrical sensibilities are shifted to darker, more modern moments at times – and the rest of the group features Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. An essential addition to the Blue Note legacy of Mobley and Hubbard – and the set's filled with original tunes by Kenny, including "The Pot's On", "Undercurrent", "Funk-Cosity", and "Lion's Den". CD

✨✧ EnchantmentIf You're Ready – The Best Of Enchantment ... CD
United Artists/EMI, Late 70s. Used ... $4.99
A great collection of the first wave of work from late 70s Detroit harmony group Enchantment – the best of their recordings for United Artists, and a set that's put together with a real focus on the group's mellower tracks! Like The Dramatics at the time, Enchantment had a newly sophisticated approach to vocal group harmonies – able to work with smoother, tighter arrangements, but not in a way that took away the focus on the sublime vocal work that made the group so great in the first place. The tracks here are a wonderful blend of the personal and professional – and even when a bit of a groove sneaks into a few of the tunes, there's still a warmly crackling vocal approach that's just as great as indie soul work from a few years back. Titles include "Gloria", "Silly Love Song", "Trying To Get Over", "Where Do We Go From Here/Journey", "Thank You Girl For Loving Me", "If You're Ready Here It Comes", "It's You That I Need", "Sunshine", "Dance To The Music", and "Come On & Ride". Sweet 70s grooving from Brazilian singer Eva – a bit of soul, a bit of easy, all styled together nicely by orchestrations from the magical maestro Gaya! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Titles include "O Homem Do Tempo", "Vinte Leguas", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Olha Eu Aqui Oh Oh Oh", "Talisma", and Sonho Lindo". CD

✨✧ Gil Evans, Jerry Dammers, & OthersAbsolute Beginners ... LP
Virgin/EMI, 1986. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A great snapshot of jazzy London in the years before the acid jazz explosion of the late 80s – and a surprisingly great soundtrack that's stood the test of time much more than the actual film! The music here represents a jazz-based undercurrent of the London scene that was already turning its ears back in time – to a pre-mod era of the late 50s, which is the setting for Colin McInnes original novel used for the film – portrayed here in a pastiche of vocal and instrumental songs that often have a fair bit of classic touches! Gil Evans was brought in for most of the instrumentals, and turns out some really sparkling charts that have all the charm of his best work of the 50s – and other contemporary artists do a pretty great job themselves – at least on the more jazz-based numbers. Evans numbers include "Va Va Voom" – and the better jazzy tunes includes the excellent "Killer Blow" by Sade, plus "Have You Ever Had It Blue" by The Style Council, "That's Motivation" and "Absolute Beginners" by David Bowie, "Rodrigo Bay" by Working Week, "Selling Out" by Slim Gallard, and "Riot City" by Jerry Dammers. Al GreenFull Of Fire (remastered edition) ... CD
Hi Records/EMI, 1976. Used ... $8.99
Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Production is by the team of Al and Willie Mitchell – in a mode that's slightly fuller and more updated than before, but still very much that original mode the pair pioneered during Green's first years at Hi – a smooth, rich sound that's never slick, never poppy, and never cloying – and a mode that never falls into disco or pop temptations other singers were trapped in at the time. Backings are by the Memphis Horns and Memphis Strings – with some occasional backup vocals from Rhodes Chalmers & Rhodes or The Duncan Sisters – and titles include "I'd Fly Away", "That's The Way It Is", "Glory Glory", "Always", "Full Of Fire", "Together Again", "Soon As I Get Home", and "Let It Shine". Although the date of this one might make you think that Al's softening it up a bit, that's definitely not the case! If anything, the record's a bit rougher than some of his earlier albums on Hi – with Willie Mitchell still working on production and arrangements, but perhaps not crossing all the T's and dotting all the I's as perfectly as before. Not that that's a bad thing, as the record makes for a great addition to any collection of Al's work – and includes some lesser-known gems that are carried off with a deep sense of soul and emotion. Hard to go wrong with Al Green at this point – 1973, when the mighty one was at the height of his secular soul powers – and when the sweetly compressed production style of Willie Mitchell just couldn't miss! There's a homey, earthy feel to the record that's really great – a sound that kicks back and lets the soul flow magically – never forcing things at all, nor taking them into the sort of easy hit territory that would have been a temptation at this point. And if anything, the album's a wonderful exercise in understatement – the kind of gently flowing soul that Green virtually invented at the time, and which few other singers could hope to match! Titles include the excellent "Let's Get Married", plus "Livin For You", "Free At Last", "Home Again", "So Good To Be Here", and "Beware" – all original tracks written by Green! CD

Beautiful stuff from one of Sweden's greatest jazz artists! Gullin's known mostly as a baritone player, but on this rare 1973 outing, he plays piano in a number of different settings – all touched with a uniquely creative vision that you don't always encounter on some of his earlier recordings on the large horn. There's slight bits of Monk and Herbie Nichols here, but Gullin also adds some wonderful bits of lyricism – which are quickly picked up by bandmates Lee Konitz, Bernt Rosengren, Red Mitchell, and Island Ostlund. A wonderful session throughout – still incredibly fresh, and unlike anything else we can think of. Titles include "Solvarm Vils", "Like Grass", "The Hambo Combo", "Blue Mail", and "Subway". Shankar JaikishanRaga Jazz Style ... LP
EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. Titles include "Raga Bhariav", "Raga Kalavati", "Raga Bairagi", "Raga Jaijaiwanti", "Raga Shivranjani", "Raga Todi", and "Raga Malkauns". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note/EMI, 1969. Used ... $6.99
Excellent work from the team of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – arguably one of their best albums from the late 60s, and a set that's got some really great funky big band numbers! There's a nice bouncing groove to the group that they normally don't have – possibly because Richard Davis is playing some Fender bass on the set, which brings in a nice focus on the bottom end – and the best numbers have a sock-soul feel that's in the best late 60s large group soul jazz mode! Titles include "Tow Away Zone", "Jive Samba", "The Groove Merchant", and "Central Park North". CD

Jongo TrioJongo Trio (1972) ... CD
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1972. New Copy ... $3.99
The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". Earl KlughLiving Inside Your Love ... CD
Blue Note/EMI, 1977. Used ... $18.99
Earl Klugh's second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out all the sweetness in Earl's approach, without falling into the cheesy qualities that it inspired in so many other, weaker players. Part of the charm of the set is the strong use of acoustic guitar on the sessions – played by Klugh in a manner that has some strong Brazilian references, and which provides a nice contrast to the other electric instrumentation used on the record. If anything, Klugh's style is stronger and more confident than on his first outing – on titles that include "Kiko", "The April Fools", "Captain Caribe", "Felicia", and "Living Inside Your Love". CD

Sweet 80s groove from Kwick – a quartet who were once known as The Newcomers, and recorded some Memphis singles for Stax – but who here reemerge more than fully-formed – leaping into the new decade with an amazingly rich sound! Given the group's previous work, the vocals here are really wonderful – trained on old school harmony modes, and refitted to some more contemporary rhythms – yet all in a way that never loses the depth that made them so great in the first place. Although never super-huge, the group have a quality level that rivals the best of their contemporaries in this mode from the time – making this debut a stone gem to rival the best from acts like Switch or Tavares. Raw New Orleans soul from Overton "Smiley" Lewis – one of the city's big stars in the 50s R&B years, and a singer who arguably set the stage for later deep soul to come! A few years before, and Lewis might have been more of a blues singer – but here, he's working with some strong Nola piano lines and lightly loping rhythms – in a mode that's vaguely in the Fats Domino side of the universe, but a lot more raw and stripped-down too – from the performance to the production! One of the greatest albums we've heard in years from Ivan Lins – a wonderful live recording that's done with a really personal and honest quality that returns Lins to the glory of his 70s years! The instrumentation alone is a key factor of the set's greatness – as the tunes feature small combo backing that's as warm and spontaneous as Lins' delivery of the tunes. But it's the vocals themselves that really make the set – mellowed a bit with age, but still with an undeniable sense of personality that captures the imagination from the very first word – coming across with incredible power, even if you can't understand the lyrics. Guests on the set include Simone and Zizi Possi – and titles include "Bilhete", "Abre Alas", "Guarde Nos Olhos", "Porta Entreaberta", "Vitoriosa", "Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai", and "Comecar De Novo". CD

MatumbiPoint Of View ... LP
EMI, 1979. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Second LP from this British reggae band, one of the first of their kind. Matumbi paved the way for groups like Steel Pulse & Aswad, before there really was a native British reggae scene. Although the group included the great Dennis Bovell –who was the man behind most of the important British dub as well as Linton Kwesi Johnson's band (which featured some other members of Matumbi) – the dynamic here is definitely more of a group thing, in a way that was evident in only a very small minority of Jamacain bands. This LP covers a lot of ground, but the band is quite succesful at everything it tries its hand at, whether sweet Lover's rock or driving Rockers rhythms. I-Roy makes an appearance, and if you look closely at the credits you'll see Nick Straker's name in there too. 11 tracks in all, including "Black Civization", "Hook Deh", "Music In the Air" and the title track. ✨✧ Milton NascimentoClube Da Esquina (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $54.99
A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $54.99
A second great statement from the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – that special assemblage of musicians from his home territory of Minas Gerais, augmented here in slight ways that maybe make the album an even more ambitious record than the first! All the best artists from the previous set are in place here – including the sublime Lo Borges on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on bass and guitar – but the set also features contributions from other Brazilian talents – including Chico Buarque on vocals, Ed Maciel on trombone, Paulo Jobim on guitar, and even Azimuth on a bit of grooves! As with the first set, the mix of modes is amazing – all the rich, soulful qualities of Milton Nascimento's best early work – but delivered in a magnificently collaborative mode that never wastes a minute of the extended double-length space of the album. As before, songs are penned by most of the collaborators – and titles include "E Dai", "Pao E Agua", "Canoa Canoa", "Credo", "Nascente", "Meu Menino", "Que Bom Amigo", and "Dona Olimpia". Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $39.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of Milton Nascimento's greatest albums of the 70s! The style here is a bit more subdued than on some of his later work – but in a way that's really majestic and soulful, showing the further development of Milton's unique idiom as he becomes one of the cornerstones of 70s MPB. There's a sense of power here that's very subtle, but which is pure Nascimento all the way – a maturing approach to both songwriting and singing that are light years from the music of Brazil a decade before. Filled with great material – and includes the tracks "Caldera" and "Circo Marimbondo", both of which have a nice swinging groove, plus "Viver De Amor", "Carro De Boi", "Fazenda", "Volver A Los 17", and "Minas Geraes". The O'Jays hit a bit of a new jack mode with this late 80s set – picking up the beats, and giving themselves a chunkier rhythm than usual – but all while keeping things in that laidback territory that suits their famous vocals so well! The mellowest cuts here are our favorites – as they remind us that the O'Jays perfection never falters, but is especially nice when the trio are right up front, and really able to dominate a tune with their well-tuned sense of harmony and warm interplay! The group members wrote a number of the songs on the set – a nice change from the Gamble & Huff era – and the younger Gerald Levert helped out a bit on the album, which might explain some of the Levert-like touches in the grooves. Later work from soul pioneer Wilson Pickett – working at EMI here, and in an updated style – on a record that would be better remembered, if not for the trailblazing importance of Pickett's earlier career. Having previously helped define raw southern soul and deliver it to the masses, it's easy to see why later, less revolutionary recordings in an more modern/contemporary vein would fail to catch the zeitgeist. But the grit and emotional intensity that Wilson delivers over some straighter, laidback 70s soul arrangements is still pretty special! One of the grooviest Australian groups of the 70s – one of that rare breed from down under who effortlessly mixed together rock and soul – often with some very unique results! We'd rank these guys right next to Renee Geyer or Rocco – as they've got a similar blue-eyed sensibility – a special way of looking at sounds from up north, then reworking them in the freedom of the Aussie scene of the time! Two of the clearest examples here come from the group's extended version of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto" – done with some razor-sharp Fender Rhodes lines that are mighty nice – and they're take on "What's Going On", with female vocals in the lead – at a level that's very different than the Marvin Gaye classic. But the whole album's got a similar balance too – and other cuts include "Skyhigh", "Get It Happening", "What's Happening To You", "Let's Get Outta Here (parts 1 & 2)", and "Gotta Get Away". CD
