✨✧ Emi MakabeAnniversary ... CD
Greenleaf, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A vocal jazz session, but one with a very different flavor than usual – given that Emi Makabe plays the Japanese stringed instrument shamisen, and also sings most of the lyrics in Japanese! The rest of the group is unusual, too – as the quartet features Victor Goncalves alternating between piano and accordion, and Kenny Wollesen alternating between drums and vibes – mixed with the bass of Thomas Morgan, in a way that creates a wonderfully fluid sense of tone and color throughout the set. Titles include "Joy", "Moon & I", "Mielcke", "Rino", "I Saw The Light", "Flash", and "Treeing". CD

Honest Jons (UK), New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A collection of tracks that amount to some of incredibly deep audio archaeology – a wonderful, consciousness wakening collection of globe spanning 78s from the first half of the 20th Century – all from the darkest corners of the EMI Vaults! Honest Jons does an impressive job of collecting recordings that are first and foremost exciting pieces of music – and they reportedly spent a couple of years going through thousands and thousands of 78s and to put this thing together. It was worth the effort! The album includes recordings from China in the 10s, Bali and London in the 20s, Constantinople, Kenya and Spain in the 30s, Uganda & Trinidad in the 50s, and much more from each decade in many parts of the world. Cuban rumbas, Middle Eastern & African string tunes, more pop oriented British tunes, vocal and pop with a global focus. Wonderful stuff! Titles include "The English Sound Table" by GU Hsu, "Lagu Kebiar" by Gamelan Gong, "Rumba Negra" by Sacasas, "Laughing" by Vemngopal Chari, "Different Kind Of Motor Car Noises" by Vengopal Chari, "The Queen's Canary" by Mighty Sparrow and more. ✨✧ Ananda ShankarLife In Music – Best Of The EMI Years ... CD
Gramophone/Time Square, 1970s/1980s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible funky Eastern groove from Ananda Shankar – and some most propulsive, Western soul and psychedelia-tinged Indian music ever recorded! This is probably the definitive compilation of Ananda's work – collected from great albums such as Ananda Shankar And His Music, Missing You, A Musical Discover Of India, 2001 and others – his most sought after records made for the EMI-subsidiary Gramophone Company of India! The sound is just incredible on the disc 1 tunes – which focus on the most riotously funky and Western-infused work in Ananda's canon – full of heavy moog, chicken scratch guitars, and funky drums! Tracks include "Jungle Symphony", "Dancing Drums", "Back Home", "The River", "Charging Tiger", "The Alien", "Cyrus", Storm" and more! The disc 2 tracks are just as brilliant, but often utilize a groovier, more atmospheric sound – moving things into more of a Bollywood filmic groove! Tracks include "Anjali", "Radha", "Celebration", "Discovery Of India", "Exploration", "Universal Magic", "Gypsy", "Indrasabha" and more. 22 tracks in all. CD

Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Milton BananaPortfolio – (VE, Todo Dia E Dia, Balancando Vol 2) (3CD set) ... CD
EMI (Brazil), Mid 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Totally amazing set of 3 rare early Milton Banana LPs from his prime bossa nova years. Not only that, but the albums are some of his hardest to find: Ve, Milton Banana Trio (1968 LP), and Balancando Vol 2. All 3 CDs are filled with non-stop hard bossa piano grooves, with lots of hard piano solos, and excellent work on the drum kit by Milton (who ranks as Joao Gilberto's favorite drummer!) Not only that, but the set's packaged as a cool box with the 3 CDs in 3 different sleeves that replicate the original LP sleeves – with full reproductions of the back and front covers. These babies are too cool to be believed, and the set's a bargain at this price – especially if you've been hunting forever for these great albums! Way too many great tracks to mention, but if you love bossa piano grooves, this set's a must for you. CD

Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! The album's got some great early psych in spots, offset with wonderfully mature and sweet lyrics on the love songs – cross-cut with a bit of witty social commentary too! ✨✧ David BowieLet's Dance ... LP
EMI, 1983. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Titles include "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "Without You", "Criminal World", and "Cat People" (in a different take than the soundtrack version.) LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieStation To Station (remastered) ... CD
EMI, 1976. Used ... $4.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condensed than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". A singles collection, but one that's so strong, so essential, it may well make the album the greatest full length set the Buzzcocks ever issued! Every track is a gem – and titles include "Orgasm Addict", "What Do I Get", "Ever Fallen In Love", "Promises", "Everybody's Happy Nowadays", "Harmony In My Head", "Noise Annoys", "Just Lust", "Lipstick", and "Something's Gone Wrong Again". ✨✧ Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro MonteiroA Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 1 ... CD
Copacabana/EMI (Brazil), 1966. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful set of duets from 60s samba stars Elizeth Cardoso and Ciro Monteiro – released in collaboration with the Bossaudade TV show! The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $14.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". Joao Donato E Seu ConjuntoCha Dancante ... CD
Odeon/EMI (UK), 1956. Used ... $12.99
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Joao Donato – pre-bossa tunes with a jazzy dancing groove! The style here mixes together swinging jazz with other elements of Brazilian rhythms – percussion grooving with piano, accordion, and some very nice work on clarinet – jazzy and swinging, but with some earthier touches in the rhythms too. The style is at once rootsy and modern, in that unique blend of styles that Brazilian groups seemed to virtually invent! A great look at Donato's pre-bossa career – with titles that include "Baiao", "Peguei Um Ita No Norte", "Baiao Da Garoa", and "Comigo E Assim". CD

First CircleBoys' Night Out ... LP
EMI, 1987. Near Mint- ... $7.99
An overlooked killer from First Circle – the only album ever cut by this obscure Brooklyn group, and a sweet set of 80s groove all the way through! There's a tight bounce to the whole record – thanks in part to production from Randy Muller, who gives the set the same focus and energy as his work at the time with Brass Construction – but minus the brass, of course! Randy plays keyboards on the record, and those keys really dominate the overall groove – stepping tightly over bassy bottoms, with a rhythmic focus that almost outweighs the vocals – making lots of these cuts perfect for mixing and dropping on an 80s-styled dancefloor. Titles include "Workin Up A Sweat", "Miracle Worker", "Can't Find A Love", "In The Name Of Love", "Boys' Night Out", and "You're On My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Dick HaymesComplete Capitol Collection (Rain Or Shine/Moon Dreams/Singles) ... CD
Capitol/EMI (UK), Mid 50s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Sublime work from vocalist Dick Haymes – a singer who's best known for his early 40s work with big bands, but who reinvented himself tremendously during the 50s! Haymes is heard here on his complete recordings for Capitol – a total of 2 albums, plus bonus singles – nearly all of which are done in a spare, somber, very late nite style – somewhat boozy, and easily rivaling the work of Sinatra during these best Wee Small Hours years of his career! Arrangements are mostly by Ian Bernard, with some help from Johnny Mandel, Billy May, and Gordon Jenkins – and the style is a perfect fit for Haymes' aging vocals, really getting the best degree of sorrow and loss from the lyrics. Titles include "The More I See You", "You'll Never Know", "Little White Lies", "Where Or When", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Now At Last", "Rainbow's End", "Two Different Worlds", "Love Is A Great Big Nothin", "My Love For Carmen", "New York's My Home", "When I Fall In Love", "Skylark", "What's New", and "If I Should Lose You". Shankar JaikishanRaga Jazz Style ... LP
EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. Titles include "Raga Bhariav", "Raga Kalavati", "Raga Bairagi", "Raga Jaijaiwanti", "Raga Shivranjani", "Raga Todi", and "Raga Malkauns". LP, Vinyl record album

Bert JanschSanta Barbara Honeymoon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $7.99
A real shift in modes for the legendary Bert Jansch – as you might guess from the sunny Santa Barbara on the cover – which is a long way from the rainy roots of Bert's music in the UK! Jansch steps out here as maybe more of a singer than before, but still gets in plenty of his amazing work on guitar – on tunes that show a more confident approach, but one that's never too slick, nor commercial. This is hardly folk-into-AOR – and instead just uses the right sort of Cali touches to augment the genius of Jansch, without getting in his way at all – at a level that also has Bert really sounding wonderful on vocals. Titles include "Love Anew", "Mary And Joseph", "Be My Friend", "You Are My Sunshine", "Lost And Gone", "When The Teardrop Fell", "Build Another Band", "Dynamite", and "Buckrabbit" and more. EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1972. New Copy ... $3.99
The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". As smooth as mink – and as sexy too! The album's one of Peggy's jazziest from the Capitol years – and has her working with some really great arrangements by Max Bennett or Benny Carter – both of whom come up with a lean groove that swings tremendously, but without some of the overly-cliched modes of later Capitol years! Peggy's in great form throughout – and titles include "Whisper Not", "My Silent Love", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Close Your Eyes", "Cloudy Morning", and "Where Can I Go Without You?". A really beautiful record from the Japanese electro scene at the start of the 80s – a record that's got some of the catchy synth modes of the period, but which also has a fair bit of other elements going on too! Logic System features keyboards from Hideki Matsutake – best known for his keyboard programming with YMO – and here, his style expands into some wider modes that almost remind us of our favorite French soundtrack styles of the period – slight currents of sentiment, and a richness of expression that goes way past the more familiar simpler forms of the keyboards. There's definitely some catchier tunes too, and the balance is very nice – on a set that's mostly instrumental, save for some occasional vocoded bits. Titles inlcude "Metamorphism", "Equivalent", "Be Yourself", "Prophet", "Morpheus", and "Venus". CD

Spare duets between these two Brazilian jazz giants Cesar Camargo Mariano and Helio Delmiro – but great work throughout, and filled with a lot more soul and energy than you'd expect! Mariano plays mostly electric keyboards – but not in a way that overrides the acoustic guitar of Delmiro – and the set's got a lot of the same elements of the best jazzy backing that Mariano provided for Elis Regina in the 70s, that great sense of darkness at the bottom – plus all the tight solo moments of Delmiro's own work from the 80s. Marisa MonteInfinito Particular (Brazilian pressing) ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $6.99
Warmly mellow work from Marisa Monte – a record that's issued in conjunction with her samba-styled Universo Ao Meu Redor album, but which has a sound that's much more in keeping with her Memorias Cronicas E Declaracoes set from a few years back! The backings here are often mellow and laidback – bits of keyboards and guitar that snake lazily alongside Monte's beautiful vocals – which themselves sparkle and glow with qualities that are far better than we remember from before. Production here is nicely subdued and almost invisible at times – but there's clearly enough magic going on in the studio to make Marisa sound this great, especially in comparison to most of her earlier work. Titles include "Levante", "Aquela", "Garanio", "Quem Foi", "Infinito Particular", "Vilarejo", "Ate Parece", and "Pernambucobucolismo". CD

✨✧ Milton NascimentoClube Da Esquina ... CD
EMI, 1972. Used ... $12.99
A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". O'JaysSerious (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Expansion (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $16.99
The O'Jays hit a bit of a new jack mode with this late 80s set – picking up the beats, and giving themselves a chunkier rhythm than usual – but all while keeping things in that laidback territory that suits their famous vocals so well! The mellowest cuts here are our favorites – as they remind us that the O'Jays perfection never falters, but is especially nice when the trio are right up front, and really able to dominate a tune with their well-tuned sense of harmony and warm interplay! The group members wrote a number of the songs on the set – a nice change from the Gamble & Huff era – and the younger Gerald Levert helped out a bit on the album, which might explain some of the Levert-like touches in the grooves. Titles include "Out Of My Mind", "Leave It Alone", "Fading", "Rainbow", "Friend Of A Friend", "Have You Had Your Love Today", and "Serious Hold On Me". CD features bonus tracks – "Serious Hold On Me (single mix)", "Serious Hold On Me (inst)", "Out Of My Mind (radio)", "Out Of My Mind (Soul 2 mix)", "Have You Had Your Love Today (club)", and "Have You Had Your Love Today (power radio mix)". Eji OyewaleCharity Begins At Home ... CD
EMI/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
No charity needed here – as reedman Eji Oyewole's got a wealth of talent on his own! Eji's a musician with roots in the 60s Nigerian scene, but left to follow a personal path through Europe and the US, where he picked up some wonderfully funky styles which are then brought home to create this completely cooking late 70s album! The style's different than other big Afro Funk names of the time – like Fela Kuti or Manu Dibango – but shares a similar sense of flowing, open grooves – and Eji's ability to act strongly as both a lead vocalist, and a soaring soloist on tenor, soprano, and flute! Rhythms are damn funky at the core – with almost a blacksploitation vibe at times – and the tracks are all quite long, with most of the real "voice" coming from the saxes, which speak volumes on their solos. Titles include "Gele Odun (Oil Boom)", "Lagos Complex Highways", "Unity In Africa", and "Charity Begins At Home". CD

PilotPilot – The Albums (From The Album Of The Same Name/Second Flight/Morin Heights/Two's A Crowd/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". CD features lots of related bonus tracks – including "Pamela", "Ra Ta Ta", "Just Let Me Be", "Maniac", "Us", "Lady Luck", "No Ties No Strings", "Are You In Love", "Just A Smile", and "Stop & Let Go". A brilliant bit of psychedelia – still as fresh today as it was many decades back – and the crowning achievement of Pink Floyd during the early Syd Barrett years! The album's got all the best elements of the group firmly in place – the penchant for long-jamming tracks that still manage to always maintain a sharp edge – mixed with some of the wittier, more playful lyrics that Barrett brought to the group – all wrapped up with a sense of depth and darkness that goes way beyond most of their contemporaries. The record's a masterpiece through and through – from its first guitar-heavy jam on "Astronomy Domine", through the strutting, vamping madness of "Bike" – all up and down other gems that include "Lucifer Sam", "The Gnome", "Take Up Thy Stethoscope & Walk", "Interstellar Overdrive", "Chapter 24", and "The Scarecrow". The second amazing album from Placebo – a wicked mix of funky fusion styles, and a real standout on the European scene of the early 70s! But there's other great elements to the music too – some tight funky rhythms, great horn parts, and some wicked guitar from fusion legend Philip Catherine – whose snakey lines bring a quality to the record that was in place on Placebo's first outing. The People Rock Outfit really knock it out of the park with this dark-edged classic from the 70s – one of the heaviest albums we've heard from the Nigerian scene at the time, and a record that's almost got more of a South African spirit overall! These guys effortlessly mix together funk and psych – the former in these stark, forward-moving rhythnm that are mighty nice – the latter in these long-spun guitar lines that have a nice fuzzy vibe, as the solos cascade effortlessly from the hands of the guitarist! Vocals are all in English – sometimes with a slow-stepping approach that's very moody, more often in a lively spirit to match the rhythms – and the record also features a bit of guest work on moog and Hammond, which really adds a lot to the sound. Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel/Adventures In Paradise ... CD
EMI (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $11.99
A dream come true – Minnie's first two solo albums for Epic, back to back on one CD! Perfect Angel was one of THE albums that helped define the sound of female soul in the 70s – a record that moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". Adventures In Paradise is even better – and may well be Minnie's greatest album ever! The album's a sparkling work of jazzy soul, with touches of the heavenly production that Minnie got in years past, and lots of smooth mellow songs that are perfectly suited to her other-worldly voice. Includes the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP! 19 tracks in all – and an essential CD for any fan of 70s soul! Killer work by The Rivingtons – material recorded in the early 60s, but with all the rough, raw, and pyrotechnic edges of some of the best 50s doo wop! The group are probably best remembered for their title hit, but the whole CD is tremendous – a real treasure trove of under-discovered gems, done in a soaring, leaping, jumping, tumbling harmony style that's simply breathtaking – a groove that almost beats The Coasters and Olympics at their own game! The production is great – tight and focused, in a way that further emphasizes the quick twists and turns in the tunes – and even the few mellower numbers on the record come off well, thanks to the tight harmonies. Strong work in the lead by The Roulettes – a group who initially replaced the John Barry Seven as the backing group behind UK rocker Adam Faith – but who here really seem to find a great sound of their own! The combo had changed a bit by the time of this debut – and benefits from great guitar by a young Russ Ballard – in a mix of beat and sweet styles that are often recorded with the same sort of echoey charm of early Beatles material, but which also get occasional jazz and blues moments that tie them more strongly to the growing wave of mod music to come. A mainstream rock trio from 70s Brazil – but one that's still pretty great too – working here in a post-Tropicalia blend of straightforward styles borrowed from England and the US, mixed with some of the more creative modes of the South American scene of the time! The lack of English lyrics gives the work an immediately strange feel – as does its sense of unusual timings, and its ability to mix heartfelt moments with slightly more ironic ones – yet never in a way that sounds to gimmicky or forced. EMI (UK), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99
Tripped-out pop by the great Sandie Shaw – a real departure from her other work of the 60s, and an album that's overflowing with wonderful late 60s tunes, grooves, and production! Sandie actually produced the set herself, in collaboration with supervisor Kenny Woodman – and she's going for a heady style that's got elements of the post-Beatles pop that would often show up on Capitol Records albums of the time, or on some of the cooler French pop sessions from the same period. Instrumentation is mostly small combo rock-based – lots of nice keyboards and guitar work, plus a bit of sax or flute – and although most of the titles are covers, they're redone by Sandie in a style that's laidback and sexy, almost a British take on the Jane Birkin style of early years. Titles include "Sympathy For The Devil", "Coconut Grove", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Sun In My Eyes", "Mama Roux", "Reviewing The Situation", and "Oh Gosh". Plus, this great version features the rare mono mix of the album – plus a full other record with 10 bonus tracks! Hurricane SmithDon't Let It Die – The Very Best Of Hurricane Smith ... CD
EMI/Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
A great collection of work by one of the most unique voices in early 70s British pop – the enigmatic Norman "Hurricane" Smith, a strange singer whose work fits into a spectrum that lies somewhere between Georgie Fame, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and Ray Davies! Like all three of those artists, Hurricane's got an ear for days gone by – a slight touch of nostalgia that comes through in the subjects of his tunes and the instrumentation that accompanies his voice. And if we were to link his style with anyone, it would probably most directly be Gilbert O'Sullivan – who shares a similarly quirky style of songwriting and arranging, and who gave Smith a hit in the tune "Who Was It?". This set features 16 tracks from Smith's early 70s years on EMI – a well-selected batch of titles that include "Aunti Vi's", "Theme From An Unmade Silent Movie", "Wonderful Lily", "Cherry", "My Mother Was Her Name", "Many Happy Returns", "Back In The Country", "Who Was It", "Take Suki Home", "The Writer Sings His Songs", and "Oh Babe What Would You Say". ✨✧ SpecialsSpecials (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
2 Tone/EMI (Japan), 1980. Used ... $24.99
One of the most important albums on the mighty 2 Tone label – and part of a huge ska revival on the British scene that would send ripples through modern music for years to come! And sure, the words "ska" and "revival" in the same sentence can often make most folks wince – but The Specials here work at a time long before the mode was reduced to cliche – and during a punk rock period when their contributions were especially vital – presented beautifully here on an album that's also produced by a young Elvis Costello! There's no overdone jams, no schlocky frat boy modes, just hard-edged London ska with a strong nod back to Kingston roots – on titles that include "A Message To You Rudy","Do The Dog", "It's Up To You", "Doesn't Make It Alright", "Concrete Jungle", "Monkey Man", "(Dawning Of A) New Era", "Too Much Too Young", and "Gangsters".
