VariousSprigs Of Time – 78s From The EMI Archive ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A collection of tracks that amount to some of incredibly deep audio archaeology – a wonderful, consciousness wakening collection of globe spanning 78s from the first half of the 20th Century – all from the darkest corners of the EMI Vaults! Honest Jons does an impressive job of collecting recordings that are first and foremost exciting pieces of music – and they reportedly spent a couple of years going through thousands and thousands of 78s and to put this thing together. It was worth the effort! The album includes recordings from China in the 10s, Bali and London in the 20s, Constantinople, Kenya and Spain in the 30s, Uganda & Trinidad in the 50s, and much more from each decade in many parts of the world. Cuban rumbas, Middle Eastern & African string tunes, more pop oriented British tunes, vocal and pop with a global focus. Wonderful stuff! Titles include "The English Sound Table" by GU Hsu, "Lagu Kebiar" by Gamelan Gong, "Rumba Negra" by Sacasas, "Laughing" by Vemngopal Chari, "Different Kind Of Motor Car Noises" by Vengopal Chari, "The Queen's Canary" by Mighty Sparrow and more. Georges ArvanitasSoul Jazz (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1960/1961. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the most hard-hitting albums ever cut by pianist Georges Arvanitas – an early effort that's all soul jazz all the way through! Although Arvanitas is best known as a committed modernist, especially in later years, this sweet early 60s session is a stone cooker in the best mode of Blue Note dates of the time – tight, swinging, and perfectly poised with just the right space for some excellent solos from Francois Jeanneau on tenor, Bernard Vitet on trumpet, and Arvanitas himself on piano – all grooving in a style that would make the Jazz Messengers proud, but also one that's got some key touches of postwar Parisian jazz too. Bass is by Michel Gaudry and drums are by Daniel Humair – and titles include "Oblivion", "This Here", "Poco Loco", "Bouncin With Bud", "Bohemia After Dark", and "Mister X". CD also features great bonus tracks – two from the soundtrack EP for Bride Sur Le Cou – recorded with mostly the same band – with titles that include "Brigitte Strip Blues" and "La Bride Sur Le Cou" – and the similar group on the broadcast tracks "245", "Suite No 1 En Re Bemol", and "Blues En Re Mineur". Kevin AyersRainbow Takeaway ... LP
Harvest/EMI, 1978. Near Mint- ... $22.99
An overlooked album from Kevin Ayers – a record that's a bit out of time, given all the changes that were taking place in the UK scene – but which still has Ayers doing all those wonderful things that made his solo career so great! The tunes are fantastic – filled with unusual images, and that sense of removed wit that Kevin always had, and which always made him so far less indulgent than the rest of the prog generation. And while the cover and some of the production almost hint at an AOR approach, the whole thing instead is hiding with a more unique vision underneath – maybe in the way that Phil Manzanera could do the same on his late 70s albums. Like those records, there's a lot of elements here that are hard to compare to anything else – but in a good way, as that's always been the charm of Ayers. Titles include "Ballad Of A Salesman Who Sold Himself", "Rainbow Takeaway", "View From The Mountain", "Goodnight Goodnight", and "Hat Song". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI/Odeon (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $9.99
Sublime bossa jazz from one of the greatest combos on the Brazilian scene of the 60s – the crackling trio led by drummer Milton Banana, a really tremendous player no matter what the setting! The album bristles with energy from the very first note – virtually a blueprint for the sound of bossa piano in the 60s, with some great acoustic work here from Walter Wanderley on piano, and basslines that have a quick-spirited sense of timing to match Milton's drums. Tracks are all short and very tight, with a great sense of jazz – leaping along the grooves with titles that include "Samblues", "Noa Noa", "Primavera", "Samba De Verao", "Primitivo", and "Sambou, Sambou". EMI (UK), 1972. Very Good+ ... $29.99
The drums have the lead in this 1972 session that was recorded as a tribute to the late British percussionist Frank King. The main backing is by the Bobby Lamb-Ray Premru Orchestra, a fairly hip large group that had a style that was similar to the Clarke-Boland Big Band. Here, though, they're a bit eclipsed by the drummers – who crack out nicely on all tracks, dominating the proceedings with some very strong solo work and firey interplay. Titles include "Son Of Cuchulainn", "Round And Round And Round Again", and "Conversations With BLK". LP, Vinyl record album

Four famous Jorges from Brazil – Jorge Ben, Jorge Mautner, Jorge Vercilo, and Jorge Aragao – all coming together in an extended live performance before a very enthusiastic crowd! The approach is a bit gimmicky, to be sure, but the music is surprisingly great – and many numbers have an earthy, spontaneous feel that really cuts against the large concert venue setting. Most numbers feature just a single Jorge in the lead – although there are a few group numbers as well – and titles include "Jorge De Capadocia", "Fenix", "Cowboy Jorge", "Sao Jorges", "Monalisa", "Taj Mahal/A Banda Do Ze Pretinho", "Por Causa De Voce Menina/Chove Chuva/Mas Que Nada", "Malandro", and "Maracatu Atomico". EMI, 1983. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Carlinhos BrownAlfagamabetizado ... CD
EMI, 1996. Used ... $8.99
A surprisingly successful mix of styles, and the kind of cross-culturally pollinated work that's been getting Carlinhos Brown a lot of attention over the past few years. This was Brown's first solo album – recorded after his work with Timbalada, with production by Wally Badarou and Arto Lindsay, and the usual requisite guest appearances by Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania, and Marisa Monte (why is it that albums by US artists – apart from rappers – are never filled with so many guest appearances?) Brown works through a range of styles in this musical blend – from modern funk grooves to string-laden ballads – and the production by Lindsay and Badarou ties things nicely together. Titles include "Covered Saints", "Comunidade-Lobos", "O Bode", "Bog La Bag", "Angel's Robot List", and "Zanza". CD

Great work from the always compelling Carlinhos Brown – working here on a wide-ranging set of tracks that harness an equally compelling range of influences. Brown produced and arranged the album himself, and the record's one of his most sophisticated to date – running from rootsy tracks with a heavy groove, to mellower ones that feature complicated backings behind Brown's smooth vocals. Despite all these shifts, though, the record's got a surprisingly unified sound – proof again of Brown's strength as an artist. Titles include "Cavalo Da Simpatia", "Shalom", "Mil Veroes", "Lagoinha", "Mess In The Freeway", "Crendice", "Horario De Verao", and "Vai Rolar". CD

Late 70s work from Nana Caymmi – 2 albums back to back on one CD! Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 32.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". Mellow electric jazz and laidback fusion from Brazilian guitarist Helio Delmiro – working here in the tight mode of some of the best recordings of the 80s fusion generation from Brazil! Some of the cuts are fairly straight jazz – like the record's laidback takes on "Epistrophy" and "Body And Soul" – but there's others tunes by Brazilian writers, like Victor Assis Brasil's "Pro Zeca", and Milton Nascimento's "Tarde", which take off in a sweetly soulful groove that makes the album well worth seeking out. Eumir DeodatoIdeias ... CD
Odeon/EMI (UK), 1964. Used ... $16.99
Early bossa magic from Deodato – cut years before his electric fusion albums in the 70s! This little gem shows Deodato to be quite the arranger – working in a small combo mode that mixes percussion, guitars, and horns with his own sweet piano and organ licks – grooving in a gentler, sparer sort of way than on his albums with the Os Catedraticos ensemble – and going for a really warm and wonderful sound! The album's got a feel that's different than a lot of other bossa albums from the time – at one level, a bit more sophisticated on the rhythms, but at another level, done with a style that's cleaner and more down to earth than the larger backings on other Brazilian sides. Tracks include "Samblues", "Nuvens", "Encanto Triste", "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce", and "Deus Brasileiro". CD

Quite a rare one from Deodato – a lost album of instrumental tracks cut around the same time as his more famous funky work for CTI! The set was issued only in Brazil, and is a sublime extension of the complicated arranging style Deodato was famous for in the 60s – a blend of jazz and strings that soars along a mellow, easy groove – lightly dancing in the sky with a gentle approach that takes the experiments of the bossa years and inflects them into a more complicated soundtrack-type style. Includes an incredible version of the track "Bebe", plus the cuts "Neve", "Barcarole", "Serendipity", "Dia De Verao", and "O Sonho De Judy". CD

Kind of a silly name for a group – but the record's pretty nice! Elbow Bones & The Racketeers were one of the many retro-soul groups working under the guidance of producer August Darnell – aka Kid Creole – who gave the group a style that was similar to his own unique blend of 80s club grooves, 40s swing, and 30s gangster cliches! Vocals are by Gichy Dan, Stephanie Fuller, and Dutch Robinson – and the set's unified by Darnell's good ear for a catchy hook – those quirky, groovy little numbers that always made the Kid Creole and Dr Buzzard albums so great! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Virgin/EMI, 1986. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A great snapshot of jazzy London in the years before the acid jazz explosion of the late 80s – and a surprisingly great soundtrack that's stood the test of time much more than the actual film! The music here represents a jazz-based undercurrent of the London scene that was already turning its ears back in time – to a pre-mod era of the late 50s, which is the setting for Colin McInnes original novel used for the film – portrayed here in a pastiche of vocal and instrumental songs that often have a fair bit of classic touches! Gil Evans was brought in for most of the instrumentals, and turns out some really sparkling charts that have all the charm of his best work of the 50s – and other contemporary artists do a pretty great job themselves – at least on the more jazz-based numbers. Evans numbers include "Va Va Voom" – and the better jazzy tunes includes the excellent "Killer Blow" by Sade, plus "Have You Ever Had It Blue" by The Style Council, "That's Motivation" and "Absolute Beginners" by David Bowie, "Rodrigo Bay" by Working Week, "Selling Out" by Slim Gallard, and "Riot City" by Jerry Dammers. Stan GetzStan Getz At Storyville Volumes 1 & 2 ... CD
Roulette/EMI (UK), 1951. Used ... $5.99
A great CD that combines volumes 1 and 2 of Stan's early live recordings at Storyville – excellent small group sessions done with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Al Haig on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Tiny Kahn on drums. The mix of guitar and tenor is great together – a sound that became one of Stan's calling cards in the early 50s – and even the live setting can't stifle the strength of his unique tone. The CD features a total of 13 cuts in all – and titles include "Budo", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "Yesterdays", "Thou Swell", "Mosquito Knees", and "Parker 51". CD

One of Egberto Gismonti's fantastic records from the seventies, and is waaaay better than anything he did for an American label. It's a wild mix of strident jazz and odd "experimental" moments, with a lot of joy and a lot of wonderful emotions running through all the tracks. The album's filled with baroque arrangements, cool keyboards, and lots of Gismonti's haunting compositions! Titles include "Frevo", "Cancao Da Espera", "Selva Amazonica", "Saudacoes", and "Maracatu". Sublime early work by Luiz Gonzaga Jr – a wonderful blend of his rootsy vocals with some of the more complicated arranging styles that were creeping into Brazilian music at the time! The album features Luiz's landmark groover "Moleque" – a lightly dancing tune with a great jazzy finish and some very nice flute – plus loads of other tracks with a similarly heavenly approach, blending soulful vocals, righteous lyrics, and sublime production! Ouch – that's a bad pun on the cover, but the record itself is a lot more down to earth – served up by a group who were a short-lived project of singer Mark Ashton after his more famous time in Rare Bird! The style here is very different than Rare Bird – a bit singer/songwriter, but still with a full band approach overall – recorded in modes that mix British and Cali mid 70s styles in the best way possible, and coming across with a lean sort of style that really lets Ashton shine in the spotlight. Bert JanschSanta Barbara Honeymoon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $7.99
A real shift in modes for the legendary Bert Jansch – as you might guess from the sunny Santa Barbara on the cover – which is a long way from the rainy roots of Bert's music in the UK! Jansch steps out here as maybe more of a singer than before, but still gets in plenty of his amazing work on guitar – on tunes that show a more confident approach, but one that's never too slick, nor commercial. This is hardly folk-into-AOR – and instead just uses the right sort of Cali touches to augment the genius of Jansch, without getting in his way at all – at a level that also has Bert really sounding wonderful on vocals. Titles include "Love Anew", "Mary And Joseph", "Be My Friend", "You Are My Sunshine", "Lost And Gone", "When The Teardrop Fell", "Build Another Band", "Dynamite", and "Buckrabbit" and more. CD includes 6 bonus tracks – an alternate version of "Build Another Band", plus 5 tracks live from Montreux in 1975. CD

Thumping dancefloor grooves with giant hooks from Jellybean Benitez – his Wotupski !?! set from '84! On one level, this is a pretty fascinating snapshot of a style with roots in underground disco, hip hop and club music that was evolving into massive crossover pop – you might remember that some chick called Madonna sings on "Sidewalk Talk" here. Interesting pop culture status aside, we're surprised at how strongly this holds up on a purely creative level after all this time. It's worth it alone for the b-boy classic "The Mexican" – an update of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" – and other tracks include "Compromise", "Sidewalk Talk", "Dancing On The Fire" and "Was Dog Doughnut". The rooftop graffitti cover is nice too, with classic styles by SEEN UA! LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work from the team of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – arguably one of their best albums from the late 60s, and a set that's got some really great funky big band numbers! There's a nice bouncing groove to the group that they normally don't have – possibly because Richard Davis is playing some Fender bass on the set, which brings in a nice focus on the bottom end – and the best numbers have a sock-soul feel that's in the best late 60s large group soul jazz mode! EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1972. New Copy ... $3.99 14.99
The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". Joyce runs through a nice mix of breezy bossa titles and some of her better and lesser-known tracks – and the overall sound is better than most of the recent Joyce albums on major labels, as it leaves off the schmaltzy studio work for some great straight-ahead live playing that reminds us more of her classic stuff. An overlooked gem from Joyce – an album that features a fair bit of help from famous friends! The set was recorded at a time when her star had faded a bit on the Brazilian market, but before she was yet to be rediscovered and re-recorded by labels in England and Japan – and despite the presence of some celebrity guest stars, the approach is often a bit mellow, in a way that makes for a very personal sort of sound. Roberto Menescal co-produced the set, and he brings a warm, acoustic feel to most numbers – kind of a gentle setting that lets Joyce relax into duets with artists who include Gal Costa, Emilio Santiago, Sandra Sa, Fatima Guedes, Ney Matogrosso, Clara Moreno, and Gilberto Gil. The sound is never too smooth or commercial – as in some other Joyce sets from the period – and titles include "Outras Mulheres", "Aleida De Ogum", "Misterios", "Da Cor Brasileira", "Stone Washed", "Essa Mulher", and "Minha Gata Rita Lee". Bev Kenny sounds surprisingly great in this Basie-styled setting – one that has Jimmy Jones handling the keys instead of the Count – with added support from players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Frank Wess on tenor and flute, and Freddie Green on guitar! Like most of Kenny's sessions of the 50s, there's a quality here that really goes beyond standard vocal jazz – a real feel for the material, and a relaxed command of the small combo setting that must have made Beverly a hell of an act to catch in the clubs. Her natural sweetness is a nice contrast to the deeper tones of the Basie players – and titles include "I Never Has Seen Snow", "The More I See You", "The Charm Of You", "My Kind Of Love", "Who Cares What People Say", and "Can't Get Out Of This Mood". A mighty big record for the lovely Rita Lee – very different than anyone might have guessed back when she was a member of Os Mutantes! Here, Rita has risen to the top of Brazilian pop stardom – and is serving up these really catchy little tunes that have her voice sound every bit as striking as before, but in a very groovy sort of way! Forbidden Fruit from the great Rita Lee – a record that has her working with the Tutti Frutti combo, a line that's decidedly more mainstream than her more famous group, Os Mutantes – but one who also really let Rita focus on her newly-developed title for putting over a very catchy tune! The group bring more of a rock-heavy finish to the record than some of Rita's later work – and the guitars and vocals are nicely compressed down in the production – maybe a bit like some of the best Brit mainstream work of the mid 70s – an approach that works well for Lee, and maybe even makes some of the music feel as much like a commentary on mainstream rock as much as catchy tuneful work headed for the charts. Always-great work from Ivan Lins – one of the few Brazilian artists who never falters as the years go on! If anything, Lins has grown into a maturity that fits his songs almost even better than back in the 70s – a sense of wisdom and presence that really serves his lyrical talents wonderfully, and which is carried off here with some lightly jazzy backgrounds. There's nothing revolutionary about the record, but it's got a solidity that's really great – a simple but effective approach to the songs that's always been Lins' strongest calling card in Brazilian popular music, and which seems to have even more focus in recent years. Guests include Chico Buarque, Dona Ivone Lara, Lenine, Moska, Boca Livre, and Guinga – and titles include "Se Acontecer", "A Gente Merece Ser Feliz", "Diana No Mar", "Lua Sagrada", "Antidotos", "Lar Doce Lar", "Deus E Mais", "Passarela No Ar", and "Ela E A Propria Vida". The instrumentation alone is a key factor of the set's greatness – as the tunes feature small combo backing that's as warm and spontaneous as Lins' delivery of the tunes. Late 70s work from Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia – a set of tracks done with assistance from friends that include Hyldon, The Fevers, and Rosana. The style here is much smoother than some of Tim's rougher earlier soul work – but not in a bad way, just one that shows him growing a lot as a songsmith, and reaching a level that has him competing with the American smooth soul stars who were such a big influence on his work. Warmly mellow work from Marisa Monte – a record that's issued in conjunction with her samba-styled Universo Ao Meu Redor album, but which has a sound that's much more in keeping with her Memorias Cronicas E Declaracoes set from a few years back! The backings here are often mellow and laidback – bits of keyboards and guitar that snake lazily alongside Monte's beautiful vocals – which themselves sparkle and glow with qualities that are far better than we remember from before. Production here is nicely subdued and almost invisible at times – but there's clearly enough magic going on in the studio to make Marisa sound this great, especially in comparison to most of her earlier work. A real departure for Marisa Monte – an album of samba tunes done in mostly traditional modes! A second great statement from the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – that special assemblage of musicians from his home territory of Minas Gerais, augmented here in slight ways that maybe make the album an even more ambitious record than the first! All the best artists from the previous set are in place here – including the sublime Lo Borges on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on bass and guitar – but the set also features contributions from other Brazilian talents – including Chico Buarque on vocals, Ed Maciel on trombone, Paulo Jobim on guitar, and even Azimuth on a bit of grooves! As with the first set, the mix of modes is amazing – all the rich, soulful qualities of Milton Nascimento's best early work – but delivered in a magnificently collaborative mode that never wastes a minute of the extended double-length space of the album. As before, songs are penned by most of the collaborators – and titles include "E Dai", "Pao E Agua", "Canoa Canoa", "Credo", "Nascente", "Meu Menino", "Que Bom Amigo", and "Dona Olimpia".
