Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! The album's got some great early psych in spots, offset with wonderfully mature and sweet lyrics on the love songs – cross-cut with a bit of witty social commentary too! Tracks include "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "Love You To", "Here There & Everywhere", "She Said She Said", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "For No One". CD

Maria BethaniaMaria Bethania (1969) ... LP
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1969. Very Good ... $19.99
Early work by Maria Bethania – recorded with a sound that's completely different than any of her later records – and pretty darn groovy, too! The backings here are by the combo of Luiz Carlos Vinhas – the pianist with Som Tres who was exploring a fair bit of rootsy and psychedelic influences in his own work. Here, Vinhas backs Maria with a really wonderful style that mixes heavy percussion with driving piano often set to modes that sway easily between jazzy and folkloric styles – and which often feature a fair bit of bossa influences as well. Bethania's vocals are still deeply rich, and somewhat emotive – but they adjust to this sort of setting with a lighter sense of the groove that we really really love. Titles include a wonderful version of Vinhas' great "Ye Me Le", plus Edu Lobo's "O Tempo E O Rio", and the tracks "Pra Dizer Adeus", "Dois De Fevereiro", "Preconceito", and "Andanca". David BowieLet's Dance ... LP
EMI, 1983. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Titles include "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "Without You", "Criminal World", and "Cat People" (in a different take than the soundtrack version.) LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieStation To Station (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Ryko, 1976. Used ... $7.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $34.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Conjunto SambacanaConjunto Sambacana Vol 3 ... CD
EMI (Japan), 1969. Used ... $14.99
A really groovy vocal treat – and excellent work from this fab late 60s Brazilian group! Conjunto Sambacana sing in a mixed male/female style that stands with the best of the late 60s Brazilian harmony acts – a strange blend of bossa roots, American pop, and some of the beautifully baroque touches that were streaming through Brazilian music at the time – all handled with a maturity that's different than most of the other acts of their generation. These guys go way way past Brasil 66 – into ambitious territory that reminds us of some of the work of Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo of the same period, with arrangements that have a very similar feel. Titles include "Canto Puro Amor", "A Bela Da Feira", "Por Que", "Em Canto Antigo", "Tarde Azul", "Saudade Nos Olhos", and "A Bela Da Feira". CD

Cosmic Eye (Amancio D'Silva)Dream Sequence (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The most mindblowing work we've ever heard from guitarist Amancio D'Silva – a really freewheeling blend of jazz and Indian music, and a set that goes far beyond most of his other albums! The album definitely lives up to the dream sequence promised by the title – as it features one long track that spins out in a beautiful blend of tablas, sitar, flute, percussion, violin, and Amancio's own great electric guitar! The leader crafts these trippy solos that are a bit like the work of Gabor Szabo, but even more open-ended and exotic – and the group also features some great work on sax from Alan Branscombe, plus violin from John Mayer – who'd worked on previous experiments of this nature with Joe Harriott. Despite the length of the track, the record is never over-indulgent or repetitive at all – as D'Silva constantly shifts the mood and the sounds – creating this wonderful interplay that really makes for a scenic richness throughout – an evocative journey in music that holds us completely rapt all the way through. Georges DelerueLe Dernier Metro/La Femme D'a Cote/Vivement Dimanche ... CD
EMI/Music Box (France), 1980/1982/1983. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
A trio of soundtracks from Georges Delerue – each with a slightly different vibe! First up is the famous Le Dernier Metro – a beautifully rich score from the great Georges Delerue – the kind of music that he virtually invented for French cinema in the 70s – balanced with this way of using full orchestrations, yet never sounding too overblown – a sense of spaciousness that's maybe inherited a bit from Morricone and the Italians, but also used with the kind of warmer, more sentimental touches that we love in French cinema! Next is La Femma D'A Cote – warmly wonderful sounds from the great Georges Delerue – one of the few composers who can make music that's sentimental, but all without ever sounding too soppy – thanks to careful use of woodwinds in space, and an ear for some nice dark currents underneath the surface! The music has a really special sort of balance – the kind that few of Delerue's contemporaries could pull off this well! Vivement Dimanche is a masterpiece of melody and drama – served up here in a nicely extended set of tracks that runs the full scope of the score for the film – numbers that are often relatively sort, but pack a hell of a moody punch in the process. 2CD set features 55 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French. ✨✧ Sacha Distel with Slide HamptonBack To Jazz ... LP
EMI/Pathe (France), 1968. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing album – not only for Slide Hampton, but for French pop star Sacha Distel, who makes a rare appearance here as a jazz guitarist! Distel had recorded years back on guitar, most famously with John Lewis – but this excellent album's even better than that one, and is a perfect mating of styles, as Distel's moody chromatic guitar playing works perfectly with Hampton's soulful trombone. Side one is a sublime set of sextet tracks, with the pair working perfectly together on bossa numbers like "Felicidade" and "Girl From Ipanema", plus Distel's own "Francine" and "The Good Life". Side two features a bigger group, but still very much in the same vein – as Hampton's ability to make a large group swing like a small combo drives the whole group into a very nice groove. Tracks on that side are all Hampton originals – and his writing on cuts like "Living Room" and "Saki" is some of his best! Great stuff throughout, and a record we've treasured for years – even though we can hardly ever find it! LP, Vinyl record album

DonovanHurdy Gurdy Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI (UK), 1968. Used ... $9.99
Easily one of the headiest Donovan albums of the 60s – a record that moves past the simple psychedelic pop of earlier hits, and into a range of mind-expanding themes and styles! There's a cerebral quality here that seems to take hold even on the simpler, catchier tunes – a deeply introspective approach that has Donovan working in a world that's really all his own – less concerned with hit singles, and more focused on a personal journey in music, one that ties together many strands of music borrowed from Celtic, West Indian, jazz, and folk sources. Arrangers are John Cameron and John Paul Jones – and titles include "Get Thy Bearings", "Peregrine", "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl", "West Indian Lady", "Jennifer Juniper", "Tangier", "The River Song", "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow", and "Hi It's Been A Long Time". CD also features a great array of bonus cuts from singles – 7 numbers that include "Teen Angel", "Poor Cow", "Lalena", "Aye My Love", "Clours", "What A Beautiful Creature You Are", and "Catch The Wind". Sweet 70s grooving from Brazilian singer Eva – a bit of soul, a bit of easy, all styled together nicely by orchestrations from the magical maestro Gaya! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Titles include "O Homem Do Tempo", "Vinte Leguas", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Olha Eu Aqui Oh Oh Oh", "Talisma", and Sonho Lindo". CD

Two full albums from the overlooked Flys – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too – finally restoring the group's lost musical legacy to all of its late 70s glory! The Flys hail from the UK scene of the late 70s – and recorded in the punk generation, but with a style that's maybe a bit earlier than that – kind of a touch of psych influence, filtered through leaner late 70s, but all with the punch of a power pop record too – a blend that maybe never got the group the attention they deserved at the time, but which really sounds fantastic here! The records are filled with catchy songs that really have an edge – kind of like early Rough Trade singles, or the more tuneful Television songs – and the 2CD set features all the tracks from the albums Waikiki Beach Refugees and Own – plus 27 more bonus tracks! Titles include "Energy Boy", "Fascinate Me", "Looking For New Hearts", "We Don't Mind The Rave", "Beverly", "Through The Windscreen", "Cheap Days", "I Don't Know", "Fun City", "Can I Crash Here", "Love & A Molotov Cocktail", "Program", "Come On Stupid", "Down Your End Of The Phone", "Fly V Fly", "Name Dropping", and lots lots more. Harvest/EMI (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Two albums from this very unique group – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Forest – a really nice album of trippy rock tracks with lots of nice folksy touches! The group's a trio, all of whom sing lead vocals from time to time – and instrumentation includes organ, harmonium, piano, percussion, guitars, electric harpsichord, mandolin, and cello – all swirling around in a style that's got traces of late work by Tim Hardin, Love, Nico, and early Roy Wood – produced with the nicely understated feel of the late 60s Harvest Records scene. Tunes are nicely simple without sounding cloying – and titles include "Bad Penny", "Fading Light", "A Fantasy You", "While You're Gone", "Do You Want Some Smoke", and "Rain Is On My Balcony". Next is Full Circle – darkly folksy work from Forest – a record with a sound that's somewhere between acid folk and some of the more progressive styles of the time – served up in a blend of mandolin, 12 string guitar, and other acoustic instrumentation – yet with a slightly electric feel at the back of the mix! The vocals are often quite ethereal, and try for a timeless feel – which ends up giving them a slightly creepy quality, but we mean that in a good way. There's almost a slight undercurrent of evil to the record – underscored by song titles like "The Midnight Hanging Of A Runaway Serf", "Famine Song", "Graveyard", and "Do Not Walk In The Rain". CD

Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Capitol/EMI (UK), Mid 50s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Sublime work from vocalist Dick Haymes – a singer who's best known for his early 40s work with big bands, but who reinvented himself tremendously during the 50s! Haymes is heard here on his complete recordings for Capitol – a total of 2 albums, plus bonus singles – nearly all of which are done in a spare, somber, very late nite style – somewhat boozy, and easily rivaling the work of Sinatra during these best Wee Small Hours years of his career! Arrangements are mostly by Ian Bernard, with some help from Johnny Mandel, Billy May, and Gordon Jenkins – and the style is a perfect fit for Haymes' aging vocals, really getting the best degree of sorrow and loss from the lyrics. Titles include "The More I See You", "You'll Never Know", "Little White Lies", "Where Or When", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Now At Last", "Rainbow's End", "Two Different Worlds", "Love Is A Great Big Nothin", "My Love For Carmen", "New York's My Home", "When I Fall In Love", "Skylark", "What's New", and "If I Should Lose You". EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. The rare second album by the Jongo Trio – a fantastic bossa group who mixed together vocals and keyboards with stunning magic! The trio's approach is similar to that of the more famous Tamba Trio – in that the three members groove on keyboards, bass, and percussion – while also harmonizing vocals in a soaring, airy style that really adds a lot to the set. This album's got the group using a bit of organ and electric piano in addition to their usual acoustic keys – making for a bossa style that's slightly electrified, with great results on the album's overall sound. The set includes a really great uptempo version of "Aguas De Marco", plus the tracks "Alo Feveiro", "Quem Vem La", "Cavaleiro De Aruanda", "Sandalia De Prata", "Bate Barriga", "Feitinha P'Ro Poeta", and "Duas Contas". Earl KlughLiving Inside Your Love ... CD
Blue Note/EMI, 1977. Used ... $2.99
Earl Klugh's second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out all the sweetness in Earl's approach, without falling into the cheesy qualities that it inspired in so many other, weaker players. Part of the charm of the set is the strong use of acoustic guitar on the sessions – played by Klugh in a manner that has some strong Brazilian references, and which provides a nice contrast to the other electric instrumentation used on the record. If anything, Klugh's style is stronger and more confident than on his first outing – on titles that include "Kiko", "The April Fools", "Captain Caribe", "Felicia", and "Living Inside Your Love". CD

The German version of the album – with German lyrics too – and a classic bit of spare electronics from the Kraftwerk man machine! The album's perhaps a bit tighter than some of their earlier albums, but it's also got that spare tinny sound that influenced a generation of hip hoppers, electro heads, and Miami bass stars. EMI (Japan), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
One of the weirdest, most experimental albums ever from John Lennon and Yoko Ono – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the nature of their other music! The set's got a cover and title that might make you expect more conventional modes – after all, everyone is familiar with the concept of a wedding album – but instead, the whole thing's a wonderful freakout that almost makes "Revolution Number 9" from the White Album feel like a pop single! The record features two side-long tracks – each very open and almost like performance art – "John & Yoko", which features lots of analogue electronics, and the couple shouting each others' names in this way that's surprisingly moving – and "Amsterdam", which is a longer songform, with surprisingly beautiful vocals from Yoko! One of the greatest albums we've heard in years from Ivan Lins – a wonderful live recording that's done with a really personal and honest quality that returns Lins to the glory of his 70s years! The instrumentation alone is a key factor of the set's greatness – as the tunes feature small combo backing that's as warm and spontaneous as Lins' delivery of the tunes. But it's the vocals themselves that really make the set – mellowed a bit with age, but still with an undeniable sense of personality that captures the imagination from the very first word – coming across with incredible power, even if you can't understand the lyrics. Guests on the set include Simone and Zizi Possi – and titles include "Bilhete", "Abre Alas", "Guarde Nos Olhos", "Porta Entreaberta", "Vitoriosa", "Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai", and "Comecar De Novo". CD

✨✧ Milton NascimentoClube Da Esquina (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". Beautiful stuff – and one of Milton Nascimento's greatest albums of the 70s! The style here is a bit more subdued than on some of his later work – but in a way that's really majestic and soulful, showing the further development of Milton's unique idiom as he becomes one of the cornerstones of 70s MPB. There's a sense of power here that's very subtle, but which is pure Nascimento all the way – a maturing approach to both songwriting and singing that are light years from the music of Brazil a decade before. Filled with great material – and includes the tracks "Caldera" and "Circo Marimbondo", both of which have a nice swinging groove, plus "Viver De Amor", "Carro De Boi", "Fazenda", "Volver A Los 17", and "Minas Geraes". EMI/Expansion (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $9.99
The O'Jays hit a bit of a new jack mode with this late 80s set – picking up the beats, and giving themselves a chunkier rhythm than usual – but all while keeping things in that laidback territory that suits their famous vocals so well! The mellowest cuts here are our favorites – as they remind us that the O'Jays perfection never falters, but is especially nice when the trio are right up front, and really able to dominate a tune with their well-tuned sense of harmony and warm interplay! The group members wrote a number of the songs on the set – a nice change from the Gamble & Huff era – and the younger Gerald Levert helped out a bit on the album, which might explain some of the Levert-like touches in the grooves. Titles include "Out Of My Mind", "Leave It Alone", "Fading", "Rainbow", "Friend Of A Friend", "Have You Had Your Love Today", and "Serious Hold On Me". CD features bonus tracks – "Serious Hold On Me (single mix)", "Serious Hold On Me (inst)", "Out Of My Mind (radio)", "Out Of My Mind (Soul 2 mix)", "Have You Had Your Love Today (club)", and "Have You Had Your Love Today (power radio mix)". An album dedicated to the great Django Reinhardt – but one that also comes across with plenty of west coast touches! The format is somewhat Django-esque – with lead guitar work from Joe Pass, plus rhythm guitar support from John Pisano – creating some of the guitar interplay you'd have in a gypsy swing record – but the groove's also a bit more modern than some of Django's classics, and there's a lighter, breezier approach here that's very much in the mode of other Pass records from the 60s – at least the small group ones! Tracks include "Django", "For Django", "Fluer D'Ennui", "Django's Castle", and "Nuages". CD

Strong work in the lead by The Roulettes – a group who initially replaced the John Barry Seven as the backing group behind UK rocker Adam Faith – but who here really seem to find a great sound of their own! The combo had changed a bit by the time of this debut – and benefits from great guitar by a young Russ Ballard – in a mix of beat and sweet styles that are often recorded with the same sort of echoey charm of early Beatles material, but which also get occasional jazz and blues moments that tie them more strongly to the growing wave of mod music to come. CD adds in lots of bonus tracks to the original album – 22 titles in all, with tracks that include "Bad Time", "Settle Down", "I'll Remember Tonight", "You Don't Love Me", "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", "Yesterday Today & Tomorrow", "The Long Cigarette", "Junk", "Tell Tale Tit", and "Me Body". Harvest/EMI, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $28.99
The amazing first album from Third Ear Band – a set that's maybe even more distinct than some of their later, better-known recordings! These guys emerged in the British scene at the end of the 60s – but they're not really psych, or prog – and although they have a love of ancient sounds, they're also not in any of the territory that was being explored by acid folk groups of the time! Instead, they've got this wonderful all-acoustic blend of reeds, stringed instruments, and percussion – all with a feel that seems to link together centuries with its own organic energy, but which also gives a bit of a nod to freer jazz elements of the time. At points, these guys almost sound like a looser, more-jamming version of Penguin Cafe Orchestra – but that's only part of the approach – as things are very unique throughout, in a blend of tablas, hand drums, oboe, recorder, viola, violin, cello, and slide pipes – served up on titles that include "Druid One", "Lark Rise", "Ghetto Raga" and "Stone Circle". The music is fantastic away from the film – very different than some of the group's earlier records, and a lot more eerie too – as some of their usual string and reed elements almost take on an electronic vibe in the process!
