Emi MakabeAnniversary ... CD
Greenleaf, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A vocal jazz session, but one with a very different flavor than usual – given that Emi Makabe plays the Japanese stringed instrument shamisen, and also sings most of the lyrics in Japanese! The rest of the group is unusual, too – as the quartet features Victor Goncalves alternating between piano and accordion, and Kenny Wollesen alternating between drums and vibes – mixed with the bass of Thomas Morgan, in a way that creates a wonderfully fluid sense of tone and color throughout the set. Titles include "Joy", "Moon & I", "Mielcke", "Rino", "I Saw The Light", "Flash", and "Treeing". CD

VariousLa Belle Epoque – EMI's French Girls 1965 to 1968 ... CD
EMI (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $12.99
Fab female pop from the French scene of the 60s – a wonderful collection of tunes that features a fair number of artists that we've never heard before! The set goes way past the over-compiled, too-familiar French hits of the time – and moves into the world of the hippest jangle pop and yeh-yeh tunes – many of which have a slightly funky or mod undercurrent at the bottom! This is definitely the kind of older French work that's appealing to younger 21st Century ears – far different than some of the more emotive pop of bigger names, and much more in the style of the groovier grooves that always live up to the best imagined version of Paris in the 60s! Most artists are French, but Sandie Shaw also checks in with one number too – and the set features a total of 20 tracks that include "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michel Arnaud with Serge Gainsbourg, "Partie De Dames" by Liz Brady, "Les Mains Dans Les Poches" by Les Roche Martin, "La Musique Et La Danse" by Christie Laume, "Tu Te Moques De Moi" by Ria Bartok, "Amuse-Toi Bien" by Alice Dona, "Bas Les Pattes" by Liz Brady, "J'y Pense Tout Bas" by Ria Bartok, "Les Trois Coleurs De L'Amour" by Alice Dona, "Tu As Peur De Bruit" by Les Roche Martin, and "Sans Avoir Rien Donne" by Anne Kern. ✨✧ VariousSprigs Of Time – 78s From The EMI Archive ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A collection of tracks that amount to some of incredibly deep audio archaeology – a wonderful, consciousness wakening collection of globe spanning 78s from the first half of the 20th Century – all from the darkest corners of the EMI Vaults! Honest Jons does an impressive job of collecting recordings that are first and foremost exciting pieces of music – and they reportedly spent a couple of years going through thousands and thousands of 78s and to put this thing together. It was worth the effort! The album includes recordings from China in the 10s, Bali and London in the 20s, Constantinople, Kenya and Spain in the 30s, Uganda & Trinidad in the 50s, and much more from each decade in many parts of the world. Cuban rumbas, Middle Eastern & African string tunes, more pop oriented British tunes, vocal and pop with a global focus. Wonderful stuff! Titles include "The English Sound Table" by GU Hsu, "Lagu Kebiar" by Gamelan Gong, "Rumba Negra" by Sacasas, "Laughing" by Vemngopal Chari, "Different Kind Of Motor Car Noises" by Vengopal Chari, "The Queen's Canary" by Mighty Sparrow and more. Peter AbdulGet Down With Me ... LP
EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

Beach BoysStack O Tracks ... CD
Capitol/EMI, 1968. Used ... $8.99
Beach Boys karaoke – or kind of a "music minus one" album – but whatever the case, the set's a pretty unique outing in the field of 60s pop! The record's exactly what the title promises – a "stack o tracks" from the group's earlier records – rhythm parts, some instrumental bits – all laid out with key guitar parts missing and no vocals at all – so that you can pick up your instrument and play along with the record – and maybe get your friends to harmonize too! At the time, the approach seemed somewhat crazy – but after spending decades tracking down Smile-era bootlegs of Brian Wilson studio tracks just like this, the record's got a surprising sort of brilliance – almost as if Brian had guessed there's be a market for his "studio progress" sort of material. Titles include "Darlin", "Salt Lake City", "Wild Honey", "Catch A Wave", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Surfer Girl", "God Only Knows", "Little Honda", and "Let Him Run Wild". CD

Apple/EMI, 1966. Used Gatefold ... $5.99
Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! The album's got some great early psych in spots, offset with wonderfully mature and sweet lyrics on the love songs – cross-cut with a bit of witty social commentary too! Tracks include "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "Love You To", "Here There & Everywhere", "She Said She Said", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "For No One". This is also an enhanced version that includes a mini-Revolver documentary. CD

Maria BethaniaRecital En La Boite Barroco ... LP
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1971. Very Good ... $49.99
One of Maria Bethania's first albums, and a beautiful set of live recordings – with a vibe that's a lot more uptempo and swinging than some of her later work! The style here almost has traces of bossa – a lighter, groovier feel at times than some of the more emotive modes that Bethania became known for during her run of 70s MPB. Backing here is by the bossa-esque Terra Trio, and they accompany her deep rich voice nicely on tracks like "Marina", "Carinhoso", "Marginalia II", "Ele Valava Nisso Todo Dia", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Baby". Very cool cover, too – with a trippy painting that has Maria's nude torso covered with flowers and bugs! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ David BowieLet's Dance ... LP
EMI, 1983. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! There's definitely some massive chart material here, but the tunes are still some of the best of their time, pop-wise – tracks that bring forward the best dark corners of the Bowie mythos, and refine them slightly for a new generation – always in tunefully compelling ways. And despite the crossover fame of the set, it holds up surprisingly well over the years – possibly because of that status. Titles include "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "Without You", "Criminal World", and "Cat People" (in a different take than the soundtrack version.) LP, Vinyl record album

BuzzcocksAnother Music In A Different Kitchen (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI (UK), 1978. Used 2CD ... $11.99
The fantastic first full album from The Buzzcocks – a group who'd already set the UK scene on fire with a flurry of amazing singles at the start of the punk generation! Here, they amazingly keep up all the great energy of their 7" releases – moving at a blistering pace throughout, with more focus than the Sex Pistols in their instrumentation, and a mixture of drum, bass, and guitar interplay that virtually became the blueprint for the whole west coast hardcore scene to come! Pete Shelly has never sounded so sinister, and the mighty Martin Rushnet puts the whole thing together with beautifully lean production – on classics that include "Fast Cars", "No Reply" "Get On Our Own", "I Don't Mind", "Autonomy", "Love Battery", "I Need", "Moving Away From The Pulsebeat", and "Fictionromance". UK pressing includes 4 bonus tracks originally released as 7" singles. CD

CCSCCS – A's, B's & Rarities ... CD
EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Brilliant work from CCS – a jazz-rock big band led by UK blues rocker Alexis Korner, arranged by Brit easy maestro John Cameron, and produced to full strength by the legendary Mickie Most! The group had a sound that was really great – with lots of fuzzy guitars up front in the mix, supported by a larger, fuller blend of horns, funky bass, and drums. The sound was a more rock-based take on styles that had been showing up on late 60s soundtracks and 70s sound library albums – but which is served up here with a more straightforward punch that makes for plenty of guitar-based funky moments. A few tracks get a bit bluesier – in keeping with Korner's heritage – but the whole set grooves pretty darn nicely, and features 2 previously unreleased numbers! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Boom Boom", "Salome", "Tap Turns On The Water", "The Band Played The Boogie", "Hang It On Me", "I Want You Back", "If I Never Sing Another Song", and "Primitive Love". Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Joao Donato – pre-bossa tunes with a jazzy dancing groove! The style here mixes together swinging jazz with other elements of Brazilian rhythms – percussion grooving with piano, accordion, and some very nice work on clarinet – jazzy and swinging, but with some earthier touches in the rhythms too. The style is at once rootsy and modern, in that unique blend of styles that Brazilian groups seemed to virtually invent! A great look at Donato's pre-bossa career – with titles that include "Baiao", "Peguei Um Ita No Norte", "Baiao Da Garoa", and "Comigo E Assim". CD

First CircleBoys' Night Out ... LP
EMI, 1987. Near Mint- ... $5.99
An overlooked killer from First Circle – the only album ever cut by this obscure Brooklyn group, and a sweet set of 80s groove all the way through! There's a tight bounce to the whole record – thanks in part to production from Randy Muller, who gives the set the same focus and energy as his work at the time with Brass Construction – but minus the brass, of course! Randy plays keyboards on the record, and those keys really dominate the overall groove – stepping tightly over bassy bottoms, with a rhythmic focus that almost outweighs the vocals – making lots of these cuts perfect for mixing and dropping on an 80s-styled dancefloor. Titles include "Workin Up A Sweat", "Miracle Worker", "Can't Find A Love", "In The Name Of Love", "Boys' Night Out", and "You're On My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

And despite the focus on solo instrumentation, the set's incredibly dynamic – hardly a mellow affair at all, and instead filled with fire and freedom throughout – all in ways that are light years past any previous guitar conceptions from Span, Brazil, or other scenes. Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99 28.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Lee HazlewoodPoet, Fool Or Bum/Back On The Streets Again ... CD
EMI (UK), 1973/1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
2 incredible slices of Lee Hazlewood – both pulled from his later, less-documented years too! Poet Fool Or Bum is a wonderful set that follows in the spirit of Lee's great Swedish recordings of the time – done in a mode that's got traces of folk, bits of outlaw country, and all of the wit that we've come to love from Lee during his earlier years at Reprise and MGM. The tracks are mostly originals, produced by Lee's old partner in crime Jimmy Bowen – and titles include "Poet Fool Or Bum", "Nancy & Me", "The Performer", "Think I'm Coming Down", and "Wind Sky Sea & Sand". Back On The Street Again is a slightly different album – recorded in Germany in the mid 70s, with a sound that's a bit more straight country – and which is filled with lots of country-styled references as well! Lee still comes across great, though – and titles include "Your Thunder & Your Lightning", "Back On The Street Again", "Dolly Parton's Guitar", "New Box Of People", "A Rider On A White Horse", and "Back On The Street Again". EMI/Outernational (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album that's every bit as cool as you might expect – a set that's very much in the same Indo-jazz experiments as saxophonist Joe Harriott, but with a slightly different approach overall! Although sitar is part of the instrumentation, there's also a fair bit of conventional jazz phrasing too – from trumpet, piano, flute, and alto sax – used in ways that color in the rhythms with a fantastic east meets west sort of sound – a bit like some of the Egyptian jazz of Salah Ragab, a quality that's definitely echoed in the horn solos too. Sitar is played by Ustad Rais Khan, who seems to get the most solo space – but there's also two electric guitarists on the record, and the interplay between their strings is great too. Manohari Singh plays sax, John Pereira plays trumpet, Lucilla Pacheco plays piano, and Lesli Godinho handles drums – and arrangements are by Sebastian D'Souza. Bert JanschRare Conundrum (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Virgin (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
A great late 70s set from Bert Jansch – a set that's maybe a bit of a return to his roots, but which also really marks Jansch as a much stronger vocalist than he ever was in the early days! There's this confidence and maturity to the lyrics that's really great – Bert inflecting things with that voice that must have been one of the most unusual on the UK scene, even in the smaller folk rock world of his roots – and although the instrumentation is relatively lean, the tunes have a fullness and gentle sort of majesty that's very different than 60s Jansch in a similar mode. The whole thing's wonderful – maybe a bit overlooked in the year when punk was exploding – but proof that some of the more timeless artists of the generation were still turning out impeccable work. Titles include "Daybreak", "One To A Hundred", "Pretty Saro", "Doctor, Doctor", "3AM", "St Fiacre", "If You See My Love", "Poor Mouth", "Cat & Mouse", "Three Chord Trick", and "Lost Love". Logic System features keyboards from Hideki Matsutake – best known for his keyboard programming with YMO – and here, his style expands into some wider modes that almost remind us of our favorite French soundtrack styles of the period – slight currents of sentiment, and a richness of expression that goes way past the more familiar simpler forms of the keyboards. There's definitely some catchier tunes too, and the balance is very nice – on a set that's mostly instrumental, save for some occasional vocoded bits. Titles inlcude "Metamorphism", "Equivalent", "Be Yourself", "Prophet", "Morpheus", and "Venus". CD

Love SculptureForms & Feelings ... CD
EMI (UK), 1969. Used ... $9.99
Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel. Titles include "In The Land Of The Few", "Seagull", "People People", "Mars", "Sabre Dance", "Farandole", and "You Can't Catch Me". CD

Marcelo D2A Arte Do Barulho ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 2008. Used ... $11.99
Marcelo D2's still looking for the perfect beat, but this time around he's got some great help in his search – a list of heavy duty guests that includes Seu Jorge, Miriam Aydar, Medaphor, Roberto Sa, and Marcos Valle – each of whom get a chance to add strongly to a track on the album! As before, the style's a Brazilian variant of hip hop – heavy beats on the bottom, crisp production throughout, and a fair bit of Portuguese rhymes on the top inflected in ways that are quite different than those on American hip hop. There's a fair bit of warm Brazilian elements in the mix too – percussion and melodies you'd never here up here on a record like this – and although lots have copied Marcelo's approach in recent years, he's still one of the best! Other guests include Thama De Frietas, Stephan Peixoto, and Cabeza De Panda – and titles include "Desabato", "A Arte Do Barulho", "Ela Disse", "Kush", "Meu Tambor", "Minha Missao", "Fala Serio", "Pode Acreditar", "Ativadade Na Laje", and "Afropunk No Valle Do Rap". Maybe the greatest moment ever from Paul McCartney & Wings – a set that features killer hits and lesser-known gems – all woven into a fantastic 70s sonic tapestry! The production and presentation of the record are wonderful – the whole thing was virtually a pop art piece when it came out – and Paul's got a way of both being intimate and charming, and helping push the whole group with soaring energy that really made them huge at the time. The album's got great production – and also features guest work from Allen Toussaint, Tom Scott, and Dave Mason. Side one is a non-stop flow of pop genius – woven from the tunes "Venus & Mars", "Rock Show", "Love In Song", "You Cgave Me The Answer", "Magneto & Titanium Man", and "Letting Go" – and side two follows up with so many great surprises – including "Treat Her Gently Lonely Old People", "Medicine Jar", "Spirits Of Ancient Egypt", and "Listen To What The Man Said". EMI (France), 1970. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Recorded in Buenos Aires, but a strong set of Brazilian tunes by these three greats! Singer Maria Crueza was at her best during the early 70s – and working here with the classic bossa team of poet Vinicius De Moraes and guitarist Toquinho, she really sparkles with a sound that's some of her best singing on record. The trio sing separately or together from track to track – and the set includes a lot of great work that's in the Black Orpheus or Afro Sambas mode. Titles include "Canto De Osshana", "A Felicidade", "Tomara", "Minha Namorada", "Valsa Da Tunisia", "Lamento No Morro", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Irene"! LP, Vinyl record album

A second great statement from the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – that special assemblage of musicians from his home territory of Minas Gerais, augmented here in slight ways that maybe make the album an even more ambitious record than the first! All the best artists from the previous set are in place here – including the sublime Lo Borges on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on bass and guitar – but the set also features contributions from other Brazilian talents – including Chico Buarque on vocals, Ed Maciel on trombone, Paulo Jobim on guitar, and even Azimuth on a bit of grooves! As with the first set, the mix of modes is amazing – all the rich, soulful qualities of Milton Nascimento's best early work – but delivered in a magnificently collaborative mode that never wastes a minute of the extended double-length space of the album. As before, songs are penned by most of the collaborators – and titles include "E Dai", "Pao E Agua", "Canoa Canoa", "Credo", "Nascente", "Meu Menino", "Que Bom Amigo", and "Dona Olimpia". EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1975/1977. Used 2CD ... $24.99
2 great records by this overlooked samba genius – an artist who's never gotten that much exposure in the US! Espelho is a set that grabs us right away – light in construction, but packed with plenty of power – thanks to a core batch of instruments that really keep to the samba tradition – setting things out in ways that are arguably more rootsy than most other Brazilian samba of the time! Joao Nogueiro's vocals have a quality that's nicely personal – almost a spoken sort of feel at times – and titles include "Espelho", "Malandro JB", "Espere Oh Nega", "Batucaje", "Desengano", "Wilson Geraldo E Noel", and "Pimenta No Vatapa". Vem Quem Tem is excellent 70s samba from Joao Nogueira – recorded with backings by Geraldo Vespar, in a style that gets at the moodiness of the tunes! The quality of the album's excellent, with nearly all original tunes by Joao, and a style that ranks the album up there with the best of his generation. Titles include "Samba Da Bandola", "Vem Quem Tem Vem Quem Nao Tem", "Chorando Pelos Dedos", "No Na Madeira", "Convenio Com Cupido", and "Amor De Malandro". CD

O'JaysSerious (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Expansion (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $16.99
The O'Jays hit a bit of a new jack mode with this late 80s set – picking up the beats, and giving themselves a chunkier rhythm than usual – but all while keeping things in that laidback territory that suits their famous vocals so well! The mellowest cuts here are our favorites – as they remind us that the O'Jays perfection never falters, but is especially nice when the trio are right up front, and really able to dominate a tune with their well-tuned sense of harmony and warm interplay! The group members wrote a number of the songs on the set – a nice change from the Gamble & Huff era – and the younger Gerald Levert helped out a bit on the album, which might explain some of the Levert-like touches in the grooves. Titles include "Out Of My Mind", "Leave It Alone", "Fading", "Rainbow", "Friend Of A Friend", "Have You Had Your Love Today", and "Serious Hold On Me". CD features bonus tracks – "Serious Hold On Me (single mix)", "Serious Hold On Me (inst)", "Out Of My Mind (radio)", "Out Of My Mind (Soul 2 mix)", "Have You Had Your Love Today (club)", and "Have You Had Your Love Today (power radio mix)". EMI/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
No charity needed here – as reedman Eji Oyewole's got a wealth of talent on his own! Eji's a musician with roots in the 60s Nigerian scene, but left to follow a personal path through Europe and the US, where he picked up some wonderfully funky styles which are then brought home to create this completely cooking late 70s album! The style's different than other big Afro Funk names of the time – like Fela Kuti or Manu Dibango – but shares a similar sense of flowing, open grooves – and Eji's ability to act strongly as both a lead vocalist, and a soaring soloist on tenor, soprano, and flute! Rhythms are damn funky at the core – with almost a blacksploitation vibe at times – and the tracks are all quite long, with most of the real "voice" coming from the saxes, which speak volumes on their solos. Titles include "Gele Odun (Oil Boom)", "Lagos Complex Highways", "Unity In Africa", and "Charity Begins At Home". CD

EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". CD features lots of related bonus tracks – including "Pamela", "Ra Ta Ta", "Just Let Me Be", "Maniac", "Us", "Lady Luck", "No Ties No Strings", "Are You In Love", "Just A Smile", and "Stop & Let Go". The People Rock Outfit really knock it out of the park with this dark-edged classic from the 70s – one of the heaviest albums we've heard from the Nigerian scene at the time, and a record that's almost got more of a South African spirit overall! These guys effortlessly mix together funk and psych – the former in these stark, forward-moving rhythnm that are mighty nice – the latter in these long-spun guitar lines that have a nice fuzzy vibe, as the solos cascade effortlessly from the hands of the guitarist! Vocals are all in English – sometimes with a slow-stepping approach that's very moody, more often in a lively spirit to match the rhythms – and the record also features a bit of guest work on moog and Hammond, which really adds a lot to the sound. A mainstream rock trio from 70s Brazil – but one that's still pretty great too – working here in a post-Tropicalia blend of straightforward styles borrowed from England and the US, mixed with some of the more creative modes of the South American scene of the time! The lack of English lyrics gives the work an immediately strange feel – as does its sense of unusual timings, and its ability to mix heartfelt moments with slightly more ironic ones – yet never in a way that sounds to gimmicky or forced. Production is pretty great too – with a great sense of space between the speakers, and a nicely compressed sound on the vocals. Tripped-out pop by the great Sandie Shaw – a real departure from her other work of the 60s, and an album that's overflowing with wonderful late 60s tunes, grooves, and production! Sandie actually produced the set herself, in collaboration with supervisor Kenny Woodman – and she's going for a heady style that's got elements of the post-Beatles pop that would often show up on Capitol Records albums of the time, or on some of the cooler French pop sessions from the same period. Instrumentation is mostly small combo rock-based – lots of nice keyboards and guitar work, plus a bit of sax or flute – and although most of the titles are covers, they're redone by Sandie in a style that's laidback and sexy, almost a British take on the Jane Birkin style of early years. Titles include "Sympathy For The Devil", "Coconut Grove", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Sun In My Eyes", "Mama Roux", "Reviewing The Situation", and "Oh Gosh". Plus, this great version features the rare mono mix of the album – plus a full other record with 10 bonus tracks! Hurricane SmithDon't Let It Die – The Very Best Of Hurricane Smith ... CD
EMI/Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
A great collection of work by one of the most unique voices in early 70s British pop – the enigmatic Norman "Hurricane" Smith, a strange singer whose work fits into a spectrum that lies somewhere between Georgie Fame, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and Ray Davies! Like all three of those artists, Hurricane's got an ear for days gone by – a slight touch of nostalgia that comes through in the subjects of his tunes and the instrumentation that accompanies his voice. And if we were to link his style with anyone, it would probably most directly be Gilbert O'Sullivan – who shares a similarly quirky style of songwriting and arranging, and who gave Smith a hit in the tune "Who Was It?". This set features 16 tracks from Smith's early 70s years on EMI – a well-selected batch of titles that include "Aunti Vi's", "Theme From An Unmade Silent Movie", "Wonderful Lily", "Cherry", "My Mother Was Her Name", "Many Happy Returns", "Back In The Country", "Who Was It", "Take Suki Home", "The Writer Sings His Songs", and "Oh Babe What Would You Say". Peter ToshMama Africa (180 gram green vinyl pressing) ... LP
EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
One of the most righteous albums ever recorded by Peter Tosh – as you might guess from the title and cover! Tosh could be great on other themes – but this set has him picking up even more politics than usual – maybe a bit late in the roots game, but able to find a way to bring the message to a much larger audience – almost as if he's taking the helm from the recently late Bob Marley, his former partner in The Wailers! Sly and Robbie are on board for rhythms, and production is in the best mainstream reggae mode of the time – on titles that include "Mama Africa", "Glasshouse", "Maga Dog", "Where You Gonna Run", "Peace Treaty", and a surprisingly strong version of "Johnny B Goode". LP, Vinyl record album
(Individually numbered limited edition of 1500 – on heavyweight translucent green vinyl!)

Marcos ValleO Compositor E O Cantor ... CD
EMI (Japan), 1965/1998. Used ... $14.99
Stunning early work by the great Marcos Valle – a dreamy bit of bossa that virtually defines the genre! The album's one of the first to feature Marcos as a singer – a showcase for his work as a "cantor" after his reputation had been building as a composer – and the record does a great job of strongly putting forward Valle's youthful talents! Arrangements are by Deodato – working strongly in his early blend of bossa rhythms and strings – and Marcos himself sings in a wonderfully fragile voice, and also plays acoustic guitar. Titles include many classic compositions by Valle – including "Deus Brasileiro", "Mais Amor", "Vem", "Gente", and "Samba De Verao". This cool reissue's also got a few extra tracks, including a rare 45 version of "Os Grilos" (better known as "Crickets Sing For Anamaria"), one of Marcos' early classics. The CD's a great package, and it's got 16 tracks in all, with a very sharp look, as is par for the course with most of these Japanese reissues! CD
