VariousArt Of Field Recording Volume 1 – 50 Years Of Traditional American Music (4CD box set & book) ... CD
Dust To Digital, 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. Used 4 CDs ... $89.99
Beautiful field recordings of American folk, blues, gospel, and more – the epic, truly wonderful Art Of Field Recording Vol 2 – collected by Art Rosenbaum in the Harry Smith tradition! It's impossible to get around the Harry Smith comparison for a box of treasures like this, but it's especially apt, given that must be one of the best of it's kind since the 90s reissues of Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music. Rosenbaum has been recording traditional music from the south and around the US for half century himself – and Volume 2 if what we can only hope will be an ongoing series captures spirituals, gospel, blues, bluegrass, fiddle tunes, vocal tunes, guitar tunes, lonely homespun balladry, and lots more – much of it from the 60s, 70s & 80s and some earlier and more recent recordings. It couldn't be more exciting that the traditions of non-professional, home based American folk music have survived all this time, and it's just as wonderful that Rosenbaum has been there to document it. More than 100 songs on 4 CDs, with a thick, beautiful, well researched and illustrated book – with notes on each of the tracks, and tons of photographs. Essential!!! CD
(Out of print – and a lot harder to find than volume 2!)

VariousListen All Around – The Golden Age of Central and East African Music (2CDs & hardcover book – with bonus download) ... CD
Dust To Digital, 1950s. New Copy 2CD & Book ... $28.99
A wonderfully beautiful package – filled with gems from the central African scene of the 50s – all packaged together with a huge book of notes that's as wonderful as the music itself! The set culls together vintage singles from the Congo, Tanganyika, Zanzibar, and Kenya – not as random rare records, but instead to showcase some fantastic musical trends that were taking place in African music during the postwar years – particularly as influences from the Caribbean were starting to hit those shores in the form of imported phonograph records. Many of these tracks showcase some fantastic acoustic guitar work along with a very hypnotic singer – while others show maybe the beginning of the Cuban influence that would come into the fold even more during the 60s – and as usual with Dust-To-Digital, the book-like presentation is as much of a history lesson and travelogue as it is a treasure trove of music. 47 tracks in all – presented beautifully! Dust To Digital, Late 60s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD, DVD & Book ... $55.99
A really fantastic little package – one that presents a key look at the farther reaches of Mississippi in the 60s, 70s, and 80s – served up in rare photographs, essays, readings, films, and a great batch of music all collected by William Ferris! Starting in the mid 60s, Ferris sought to document the disappearing scene around him – and emerged as almost a one-man version of Smithsonian/Folkways – as you'll discover in this fantastic box, which includes 1 DVD of film footage, plus a CD of rare blues, another CD of gospel, and a third CD featuring interviews and stories from Alex Haley, Barry Hannah, Bobby Rush, Shelby "Poppa Jazz" Brown, James "Son Ford" Thomas, BB King, Ray Lum, Pecolia Warner, and others! As usual with Dust-To-Digital, the whole package is beautiful – and includes a fabric-covered box with a heavy, hardcover book that features rare photos by Ferris, plus writings by Scott Barretta, David Evans, and Tom Rankin. ✨✧ Washington PhillipsWashington Phillips & His Manzarene Dream (CD & book) ... CD
Dust To Digital, Late 20s. New Copy CD & Book ... Out Of Stock
Other-worldly sounds from Washington Phillips – an artist you might consider as an early force in gospel music, but one who has a style that's all his own! Washington sings alongside his own music on zither – notes that have a ringing, cascading vibe that's almost heavenly, but handled with very down-to-earth phrasing – as are Phillips vocals, which have a folk blues component – but again, are unlike most anyone else we can think of! The package features a beautiful 76 page hardcover book – filled with photos, and writings that showcase new research on Washington's unique talents – and the CD includes 16 tracks recorded in Dallas between 1929 and 1928, presented with newly remastered sound. ✨✧ Gareth MurphyCowboys & Indies – The Epic History Of The Record Industry (hardcover) ... Book
Thomas Dunne, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly wide-ranging look at the world of recorded music – one that traces the record business from its earliest days, through its rise in the 20th Century, to its shifts and transformations at the start of the digital generation! Gareth Murphy takes on a whole lot of territory here – both American icons of recording, and lots of forces that made things happen overseas – from very early use of recording devices in the 19th century, to pioneering record labels and producers, to the kinds of mavericks who always kept things interesting – including important figures like Chris Blackwell, Sylvia Robinson, Sam Phillips, and John Hammond! The book is hardcover, almost 400 pages, and has some black and white images. Book

VariousNoise Reduction System – Formative European Electronica 1974 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 4 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible collection of electronic sounds that went on to inform generations of rock, pop, and dance music in years to come – but all featured here with much more interesting examples from the European roots of the genre! There's a wonderful criss-crossing of sources going on here – some academic experimenters from electronic labs, some prog musicians getting a bit more analog, some early digital keyboard wizards, and some downright punky folks – using electronics instead of guitars! The blend is wonderful, and very ear-opening – even more amazing than the partner set in this series, Close To The Noise Floor, which focused on the UK. The music here includes early work by artists you might not expect in such company, alongside others who flourished briefly at the time, gave us some great sounds – then quickly disappeared. Fortunately, the big book of notes tells all the details of the groups and their music – making the whole thing as historically informative as it is entertaining. Titles include "Ich Will" by DAF, "Ny Ny" by Truus De Groot, "Caramel" by Cluster, "Godot Was Here" by Human Flesh, "Soviet Invasion" by Doxa Sinistra, "Last Lift" by Not Only Bones, "Geld" by Malaria, "Son" by Minny Pops, "What's Dat" by Der Plan, "Industrial Tape Track 3 (excerpt)" by Maurizio Bianchi, "Sexual Discipline" by Die Form, "Flanco Dama" by Diseno Corbusier, "Troglodyten" by Asmus Tietchens, "Hymne Au Ver" by Bene Gesserit, "Secret Affair No 2" by Borghesia, "Glue Head" by Yello, "Party Talk" by Andre De Koning, "Shai Hulud" by Bernard Szajner, and "TAnze & Singen" by DDAA. 61 tracks in all!
