Miles DavisComplete Jack Johnson (5 CD set) ... CD
Sony, 1971. Used 5 CDs ... $49.99
5 discs of Jack Johnson! Probably more Jack Johnson than most people could take, but for the few out there, like us, who can never get enough electric Miles (kind of like some of Miles own favorite diversions from that period) this box is a dream come true! Unlike the later live sides, the grooves here are pretty sparse, with a wide open approach that would later get replaced by frenzied multi-linear soloing, but still with the loose energy and funked up rhythms that would mark Miles work during the early 70s. Like the Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way boxes, this set really highlights Teo Macero's tape wizardry, when you compare the raw takes, of which most numbers get represented here in 3, 4 or 5 versions, to the edited versions that were finally released. If you want to utilize ye' olde program feature on your stereo, you can can arrange several different versions of the complete album, which is a pretty fantastic feature for obsessives such as ourselves! With "Willie Nelson", "Johnny Bratton", "Go Ahead John", "Duran", "Sugar Ray", "Right Off", "Yesternow", "Honky Tonk", "Ali", "Konda", "Nem Um Talvez", "Little High People", "Little Church" and "The Mask". CD
(Out of print – and in the beautiful metal-spine case. Case has some very light wear, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ Vince GuaraldiLatin Side Of Vince Guaraldi ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A wonderfully sweet little album from pianist Vince Guaraldi – a lively dancer that has all the charm of his best soundtrack work, but which also inflects that tone with some really great Latin touches as well! Guaraldi's piano is incredibly lyrical – dancing with a sense of lightness and joy that's like the first warm breezes of a sunny spring day. But he's also never sleepy or too sweet – as there's a heavily rhythmic pulse in his work on piano – one that gives the tunes a nice degree of soul. Of course, it also helps that the group features some work by Benny Velarde on timbales and Bill Fitch on congas – rounding out the already-great rhythms laid down by Vince's quartet with Eddie Duran on guitar. A few tracks feature some nice light touches from a string quartet – and titles include "Star Song", "Brasilia", "Mr. Lucky", "Corcovado", and "Treat Street". CD

Vince Guaraldi TrioCharlie Brown's Holiday Hits ... CD
Fantasy, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 12.98
The music of Vince Guaraldi and Peanuts isn't just for Christmas – although Vince racked up plenty of fame over the years for his Christmas-themed tunes – and this collection's a great reminder that the Guaraldi genius graced a whole host of different Charlie Brown cartoons in the 60s and 70s – all with results that are completely sublime! The music here is from a host of different small combos, used in a number of different Holiday-themed cartoons over the years – and Vince plays piano with accompaniment that shifts from track to track, and includes a bit of trumpet from Tom Harrell, guitar from Eddie Duran, and timbales from Benny Velarde. The album may well be worth it alone for the classic "Joe Cool" – a tune that may well be our favorite from the Peanuts cartoons – and but the set includes lots of other greatness, with titles that include "Linus & Lucy", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Schroeder", "Charlie's Blues", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Surfin Snoopy", "Heartburn Waltz", and "Track Meet". Mongo SantamariaAfro Roots (Mongo/ Yambu) ... CD
Fantasy, 1958/1959. Used ... $8.99
A nice Prestige 2-fer collecting 2 early sides Mongo cut for Fantasy in the late 50s. The first, released under the title Mongo, is a no-nonsense batch of Latin jazz tracks, arranged by himself and Francisco Aguabella, who's sort of the co-leader of the group on the set! Players include Emil Richards, Paul Horn, Armando Pereza, Carlos Vidal, and Willie Bobo – and as you can imagine by that lineup, there's plenty of heavy duty percussive action! Jose Chombo Silva plays a bit of tenor – and titles include "Chano Pozo", "Mazacote", "Los Conguitos", and "Afro Blue". Yambu, another of Mongo's great early records, is the second LP of the set. It's got a spooky Afro-Cuban sound, and a great assortment of drummers that includes Francisco Aquabella, Carlos Vidal, Willie Bobo, and Modesto Duran. The overall vibe is much more traditional than Mongo's other albums – and there's none of the pop Latin jazz of his years at Columbia records, or his "Watermelon Man" era at Riverside. Cuts include "Timbales & Bongo", "Yeye", and "Columbia", and the sound is nice and raw. CD

Cal TjaderMambo With Tjader (2nd cover) ... LP
Fantasy, 1954. Sealed ... $16.99
Early Latin from the great Cal Tjader – proof that he had a wonderful ear for this sort of a groove, even when he was just getting started! The album's a killer batch of jazzy mambos all the way through – served up with hard-edged vibes from Cal, all nicely chromatic in tone – plus rhythm from a combo that includes Beny Velarde on timbales, Manuel Duran on piano, Carlos Duran on bass, and Edgard Rosales on conga. Tracks are short, but the mambo groove makes for plenty of nice jazz touches – and Cal's vibes ring out loud and clear with a tone that's almost bolder than in later years! Titles include "Lucero", "Autumn Leaves", "Tenderly", "Mamblues", "Cherry", "I'll Remember April", and "Bye Bye Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Cal TjaderTjader Plays Tjazz ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1955. Used ... $9.99
The title gets it right on this one – as the set's one of Cal's greatest straight jazz albums of the early years – done in a harder, and more soulful mode than some of his Latin-based sets from the time! The album features 2 different groups, both of them great – a main quintet that includes Brew Moore on tenor and Sonny Clarke on piano – and an additional quartet that features Bob Collins on trombone and Eddie Duran on guitar. The use of horns on the set is a nice change from some of the heavily percussive styles of Cal's other Fantasy records – and Moore's work on the album is especially nice, with some strong tenor moments that really make the album! Titles include "Moten Swing", "I've Never Been In Love Before", "Imagination", "I'll Know", "Brew's Blues", "A Minor Goof", and "How About You". CD

✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz with Cal Tjader ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan would take in later years – his bossa sides, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea. The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. Billy Higgins is also added on drums, giving the set a lively songlike sound that's just great. The group works incredibly well together, and it's a shame they only really gelled for this rare non-Verve session. Titles include "Big Bear", "Crow's Nest", "Liz-Anne", and "Ginza Samba". CD

✨✧ Vladimir And His OrchestraNew Sound In Latin Jazz ... CD
Alegre, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever recorded by Vladimir Vassilieff – an obscure late 60s piano player who's best known for his groovy album The Aquarians! The record's a really wonderful set that really lives up to its title – a haunting set of Latin jazz numbers played with a hip group that includes Many Duran, Bobby Rodriguez, and the great Bobby Porcelli on alto. The groove is light and free – a blend of 60s Latin, hardbop, bossa, and more – handled with the kind of modern touches that few other Latin leaders were using at the time, save for the great Bobby Vince Paunetto. Leo Morris makes a surprising guest appearance on the groover "Baby Boo Boogaloo", and other cuts include "Suzy's Bossa Nova", "Mambito", "Camelot Cha Cha", "Mambo at the Cave", and "Mombo Moderno". ✨✧ Vince GuaraldiComplete Warner Brothers/Seven Arts Recordings (Oh Good Grief/Eclectic/Alma-Ville/bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Omnivore, 1968/1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of wonderful records – plus rare bonus tracks too! First up is the classic Oh Good Grief – one of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi nicely expands Vince's sound of earlier years – by taking his lyrical piano groove and adding in a bit of electric harpsichord – plus slightly larger arrangements that feature a bit of electric bass, guitar, and just the right light touches of strings. The resulting sound is wonderful – as deeply reflective as some of Vince's better-known work, but with some cool late 60s touches that really give the album a fresh kind of feel. And heck, Vince even sings on 2 Tim Hardin tracks – "Black Sheep Boy" and "Reason To Believe" – using a great raspy style of vocals that we didn't even know he had! Other titles include a great electric version of "The Beat Goes On", plus cool originals "Nobody Else", "Coffee and Doe-Nuts", and "Lucifer's Lady". Alma-Ville was cut during Vince's late 60s hipster phase – and it combines work on piano with a bit of electric playing, plus hip LA arrangements that include drums by Dom Um Romao, guitar by Herb Ellis, and added percussion by Rubens Bassini. Tracks are mostly originals – short groovers and sing-song numbers, a lot cooler than some of Vince's earlier work – all dancing along in a sweetly breezy groove that makes for a heck of a delightful little album! Titles include "Rio From The Air", "Cristo Redentor", "Uno Y Uno", "Detained In San Ysidro", "Jambos", "Alma Ville", and "The Masked Marvel". 2CD set features 4 bonus tracks – "Oh Happy Day", "The Sharecropper's Daughter", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose (take 15)", and 'The BEat Goes On (alt take 14)". ✨✧ Durand Jones & The IndicationsAmerican Love Call ... CD
Colemine/Dead Oceans, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Man, these guys just keep on getting better – and this time around, Durand Jones & The Indications deliver a record that's way more than just another funk band with a lead singer! Instead, there's a depth and complexity to this set that takes us back to our favorite indie soul albums at the start of the 70s – particularly ultra-hip work from the Philly and New Jersey scenes, where sweet and funky soul modes could exist in equal space – and come up with results that are every bit as great! The core funky instrumentation from the group is still in place - but there's also larger arrangements with a bit of strings and vocals – really opening up the tunes, and somehow underscoring their more righteous currents in a way that smaller instrumentation would never do. Jones sounds better than ever – as if he's been waiting for a chance like this to really take off – and titles include "Morning In America", "Circles", "True Love", "Walk Away", "Long Way Home", "Sea Gets Hotter", "How Can I Be Sure", "Listen To Your Heart", and "Court Of Love". Sounds come from a variety of sources – glass bowls, tubes, piano, baritone horn, synthesizer, and many voices – but all often abstracted by the production, and taken into territory where even the more familiar moments get completely changed up – with a disorienting vibe that's almost an 80s evolution of earlier electro-acoustic modes. GDM/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A later score from Ennio Morricone – but an incredibly beautiful one too – penned for a mid 80s mafia film set in Sicily, but featuring some of his sweetest, most sensitive work of the time! There's a very bittersweet feel to most of the music here – a quality that's almost romantic at times, but touched with really blue notes too – as the tunes spin out in slow, thoughtful progressions that echo the darker choices and themes of the film. There's a few more upbeat tracks, and a few darker, atonal numbers – but overall most of the score is steeped in melancholy – with gentle strings and woodwinds that have plenty of trademark Morricone touches! Wonderful work from Horace Silver – part of a great run of late 70s sides for Blue Note that unlock a whole new side of his soulful talents! The vibe here is different than the previous United States trilogy – still very righteous, with an overt message too – but served up in these wonderfully warm tones – with loads of great woodwind passages over these wickedly angular rhythms – grooves that are somewhat like those Silver first started forging on his 27th Man album! The arrangements are sublime – and on some cuts handled by Silver, but orchestrated by Wade Marcus – with players who include Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Buddy Collette and Fred Jackson on flutes, and Jerome Richardson on soprano sax. The rhythm section is key, too – and features Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums! Side one features "The Tranquilizer Suite" – with passages that icnlude "Keep On Getting Up", "Time & Effort", and "Perseverance & Endurance" – and side two includes the excellent "The Process Of Creation Suite" – with "Motivation", "Activation", and "Assimilation". Plenty of disco love here – a really heartfelt selection of rare club tunes – great little numbers that are as funky and soulful as they are obscure! These aren't the disco hits of the late 70s, but they're also not clunkers that are just rare either – and instead, they're great little tunes that hardly got discovered back in the day – but are brought together here in a wicked collection by collector Al Kent! There's a freshness to the material that takes us way past the obvious – funky basslines, snapping drums, and lots of wonderful keyboards and guitar – all wrapped up in a near-perfect way, and usually set to some smoking vocals too. Many of the cuts here are rare to even our crate-tuned ears – and titles include "Mighty Gents" by The Mighty Gents, "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang, "Oh Baby/Get On Down" by Bo Galigher & TSB, "Something About You" by Moses, "Disco Fever (part 3)" by Rhond Durand, "Disco Music" by Sil Austin, "Hustle On Down (part 3)" by Michael Legrair, "I Want To Be With You" by Gregory Andre & Two Plus Three, "How Long Is Forever" by Frank & James, "Human" by Neo Experience, "Waiting In the Wings" by Marion Javius, and "Is It Wrong" by Magnetic Force. 2CD version features a full mix of all tracks by Al Kent – plus an unmixed CD with 15 individual tracks.
