Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

Hamid Drake/Michael Zerang DuoAsk The Sun ... CD
Okka Disk, 1996. Used ... $7.99
A classic pairing of two of the most important percussionists on the Chicago avant scene of the 90s – Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang, both musicians with a very different sound and style – but whose contributions to the Okka Disk label alone are more than enough to warrant them pages in the history book of Windy City jazz! Both musicians really open up here on a fantastic range of percussive elements – standard drums, plus bells, tablas, gongs, didjeridoo, cymbals, shakers, congas, and frame drums – handled in these open, organic ways that are very different than some of the accompaniment that both Drake and Zerang were giving horn players, maybe more of a loft jazz mode, but also with ties to the early AACM. The record also features a bit of guest work – Ashik Altany on zurma and Eddie Zerang on djembe – on titles that include "The Wisdom Sisters", "River Dance", "Children Of Clark Street", "Dreaming Of Winter", "Zikr Of The Heart", and "The Black Basement". Fox Millions DuoBiting Through ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2019. Sealed ... $6.99
Avant percussion heroes Greg Fox and Kid Millions team up as the Fox Millions Duo! Biting Through is bigger sounding than a lot of the experimental instrumental or post-post rock out there, with a driving drum sound and thick layers of synth in both the heavier and more frenetic moments, and the more methodically paced, looser moments – even in the sparest passages the atmosphere is thick. Sharp stuff! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anthony Braxton – Georg Grawe DuoAmsterdam 1991 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1991/1997. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 24.98
A trio of live performances from the duo of Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller – all concerts featuring just the two pianists working alongside each other, in a mode that has both players stretching out beautifully! There's no other instrumentation at all – no bass, drums, or horns – so Barron and Miller also trade back and forth with rhythmic lines while the other is flying freer on a solo – all a wonderful demonstration of their genius at the keys! The set features performances from three different shows, one in 2005, two in 2011 – and there's a few solo numbers along the way too. Titles include "Joy Spring", "Yardbird Suite", "It Could Happen To You", "Never Let Me Go", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "I Mean You", "Blue Monk", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good", "When Lights Are Low", "The Very Thought Of You", and "Song For Abdullah". Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & The Mitchell Ruff Duo ... CD
Mainstream/Solid (Japan), 1972. Used ... $9.99
Wild – but pretty darn wonderful stuff! Dizzy's recording here in one of his sparest settings ever – blowing trumpet with accompaniment from the duo of Willie Ruff, bass and French horn, and Dwike Mitchell, piano – working in a mode that's really cool, really stripped down, and which has an amazingly understated tone! Given that the album has two horns, bass, and piano – and none of those all at the same time, with no other drums or instrumentation – the format is really amazing. Add to that the fact that the tracks are often quite long, and you get a sweet and introspective side of Diz (and the Mitchell Ruff Duo) that you might not have otherwise heard! Titles include "Con Alma", "Blues People", "Bella Bella", and "Dartmouth Duet". CD

Pete Jolly & Ralph PenaDuo ... CD
VSOP/Solid (Japan), 1960. Used ... $14.99
A really unique outing from pianist Pete Jolly – heard here in an extremely spare duo setting with bassist Ralph Pena, on material recorded during a brief tour of New Zealand! The set was recorded live in Aukland in 1960, and features Jolly really opening up in the unbridled format – stretching out on longish tunes that sparkle with his usual fluid approach to the keys, but which also show him taking on some boppish and more modern styles as well. The real surprise is Pena, though – a player that we really like already, but who steps out here with a presence that's quite strong – adding just the right touches to Jolly's work on piano, and rounding out the tunes with a wonderfully crafted tone. Titles include "Easy To Love", "Variations", "Bulja Bass", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Walkin", "Ceila", "Friday The Thirteenth", and "I Don't Wanna Be Kissed". CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic showcase for these two modern jazz giants – sublime trombone sounds from Albert Mangelsdorff, perfectly paired with the alto sax of Lee Konitz – all at a level that makes the album one of the best from both players at the time! The session was actually a late MPS effort, but issued on Enja – and it vaguely recalls some of the Mangelsdorff MPS duos from a decade before – but maybe more rhythmic and swinging overall – never totally free jazz, and clearly improvised – but with an inherent rhythmic core that's also very much appreciated, especially as both players throw out some very creative sounds. Titles include "Hot Hut", "Inclination", "A Minor Blues In F", "En Passant", "Bloas", and "Matti's Matter". CD

Terry Riley & Krishna BhattTerry Riley/Krishna Bhatt Duo ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1984. New Copy 2CD ... $26.99
Unreleased work from Terry Riley – recorded in the WDR studios of German Radio, and a tremendous addition to his catalog! The first half of the music here features Riley on piano and electronics, in duet with Krishna Bhatt on sitar and tabla – in a mode that further unlocks the influence that Terry first received from Indian music, then transformed into his own spiritual sound. There's a bit more openness on both the sitar, and Riley's piano – while the electronic waves provide more of the minimalist pulse – on a 38 minute reading of "Song From The Old Country". "Jaipur Local" follows – a shorter performance, but still quite long – with Riley on piano, improvising a bit more alongside Bhatt's sitar. There's also a bit of vocals, too – with these very odd, homespun lyrics by Terry – very unusual. The second half features Riley solo – playing both piano and electronics, on a very long reading of his "Harp Of New Albion". CD

✨✧ Mulgrew Miller & Nils Henning Orsted PedersenDuke Ellington – The Duo ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1999. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of Duke Ellington was famously scored for his orchestra – but the material also provides a surprisingly great showcase for the talents of a smaller unit, too – especially when in the hands of a duo like this! Mulgrew Miller plays piano and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen plays bass – and the intimacy of the album reminds us of some of the best-recorded Pablo sessions of the 70s – particularly those that sought to re-work classic territory in a more contemporary vibe – which Miller definitely does with his superbly fluid touch on the keys! Pedersen is great, too – very well placed in the mix, and working with that sort of tone and soundshaping that always made him one of the all-time greats on the continent. Titles include "Caravan", "Solitude", "Just Squeeze Me", "Come Sunday", and "Pitter Patter Panther" – plus the Miller original "Blues In The PMs". CD

The record is one that really elevates our appreciation of both musicians, and which will have us certainly keeping an ear out for lots more in the future – and Amado especially is really emerging as a bold-toned tenorist with a strong current of soul. Groundbreaking improvisations from the duo of Paul and Limpe Fuchs – working here at the Days Of Free Music Festival in 1977, on a host of unusual instruments of their own creation! About the only thing familiar here is the set of drums played at times by Limpe – alongside all sorts of other incredible things created by the pair – including a bowed stringed instrument, a large horn of copper, strange combinations of exotic wind instruments and mouthpieces, a foot zither, and other unusual percussion instruments – all used in ways that are very open and improvised – almost as if you had a troupe of Harry Partch musicians creating their own music after hours. Limpe and Paul also each get a solo track – but most of the set is duo improvisations! LP, Vinyl record album

Mindblowing sounds from Anteloper – a great side project from trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and one that lets her open up with lots of the more electronic sides of her spirit! The set's a collaboration with Jason Nazary – who adds in acoustic drums plus a host of electronics and effects – echoed by Branch, who blows her usual strong lead on trumpet upfront, but also works electronic magic too – so that the duo are creating in the best mix of live instrumentation, processing, and editing that have made the International Anthem label such a powerhouse in new waves of jazz in recent years. The work's not unlike some of the recent projects of trumpeter Rob Mazurek – who, not surprisingly, provides notes on the record – which includes the tracks "Bubble Under", "Isotope 420", "Soledad Sabateur", and "Radar Radio". A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds – a tremendous spirit that makes the record very different than freer jazz outings, and which maybe points the way towards some of the classic European tenor/piano recordings to come. Brand New HeaviesTBNH ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". CD

Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 18.98
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

Brownsmith are Don Brown and Garrett Smith – a duo who only cut this one album in the mid 70s, but manage to come up with a sound that's wonderfully warm, and in a sweet Cali blend of acoustic guitar and harmonies! The style's a bit in the territory of America – and Brown and Smith can certainly harmonize in very similar modes – but the instrumentation and production are even lighter, which really fits the personal style of their lyrics in a great way. Arrangements are by Jim Bredouw and Martin Lund – the latter of whom adds some great instrumental touches, like flute and electric piano – on titles that include "Circus Ride", "Lightning Lady", "Summer Afternoon", "Gold & Mellow", "Sunrise To Sunset", "July Moon", and "Friends Of Mine". A&M, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
Excellent mid 70s duet jazz from pianist Dave Brubeck & alto Paul Desmond! Duets 1975 is a nicely laidback work from the duo – playing here with no other accompaniment, in a spare set of material that's incredibly fragile and intimate – and all the better for that. The move is a real change from the pair's more famous sides of the late 50s and early 60s – and with no drums and bass to get in the way, they drift around warmly, working together and apart as old friends with a great deal of sympathy for each other. One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Saxophonist Chris Byars always has a great way of putting together a set of horn players – and here, his tenor is matched with alto from Zaid Nasser, bass clarinet from Stefano Doglioni, and trombone from John Mosca – all given piano-less accompaniment from the duo of Ari Roland on bass and Phil Stewart on drums! At some level, the music maybe echoes specific 50s modern modes – some west coast, some Gerry Mulligan styles – but there's also a much more contemporary vibe to the recording, one that comes partly from the mostly original material by the leader. The tunes bristle with a nice assortment of colors, and never overstate their inventiveness – and titles include "Nashville", "Arizona", "Keeper", "Moscow", "Third Culture Kid", and "Philadelphia". The shifting mix of Carter's instrumentation is matched by a never-ending flow of imagination from the fingers of Shipp – often moving fast, with that sense of freedom that marked his earlier work – but circling back to some of the more sense-making moments that have graced his more mature recordings in recent years! The album's got quite a different feel than the rest of the duo's work – as their standard Brit pop style is augmented by lots of extra strings and woodwinds, super-baroque in a beautiful post-Pet Sounds sort of way. The songs are wonderful, too – with themes on the rise and fall of modern life, very much in a Kinks sort of style – with titles like "Busman's Holiday", "Rest In Peace", "Family Way", "Can I See You", and the extended "Progress Suite". The sounds here are as stunning as the lineup – maybe even more so, as there's some nicely-unfamiliar, surprisingly collaborative passages going on – all of which really illuminate the studio music by these groundbreaking artists! The set begins with "Andalusian Proverb" – a beautiful showcase for the dynamic vocals of Jeanne Lee, as she sings with Gunter Hampel on vibes, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Pierre Courbois on drums. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass. Maybe the crowning moment of genus from the great Neneh Cherry – a record that's a huge evolution from her post punk funk of just a few short years before – and one that really helped her bridge the Atlantic and find a huge following over here at the time! There's a great mix of hip hop inspiration and electro soul styles going on here – but also fused with the chunkier modes that were coming out of the UK soul scene right at the end of the 80s – maybe a new love of the depth of classic soul, which is used to really amplify the spirit of the great lyrics that Neneh delivers throughout. Titles include the megahit "Buffalo Stance" – plus "Manchild", "Kisses On The Wind", "Inner City Mama", "Heart", "The Next Generation", "So Here I Come", "Outre Risque Locomotive", and "Love Ghetto". Beautiful 3LP version – packaged in a heavy slipcover – with loads of bonus materials! Classic minded but truly fresh duo hip hop from the Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks, aka the Cool Kids – billed as an EP, but a pretty generous one at 10 tracks and more than a half hour in length – a strong hint that these Kids are going to make a huge splash! The Cool Kids produce themselves, thank you very much – and do so with love for the spare, minimalist synthy funk beats that most of the mainstream beatmakers deal in – but no one else is doing it quite this way. The rhymes are spun with an easygoing, finessed delivery and they fool around with some delirious tape speed deviations for the fun and funk of it. Pre-release hype be damned, the Cool Kids are the real thing! 10 tracks in all: "What Up Man", "One Two", "Mikey Rocks", "88", "What It Is", "Black Mags", "A Little Bit Cooler", "Gold And A Pager", "Bassment Party" and "Jingling". The music isn't really jazz, but we're not sure what else to call it either – as the duo mix together lots of keyboards, tenor, drums, and plenty of beats and samples – but in ways that are very unconventional, and which have an intensity that's very different than Alabaster's previous record – almost some of the genre-crossing modes that we loved in sonic experiments from London in the 80s, but hipper overall. MC Esoteric's excellent solo album – coming after years of honing his skills in the Boston underground duo 7L & Esoteric (the former playing a guest roll on cuts & production on a few tracks) – and a few years before doing great things with the 7L & Inspectah Deck in Czarface! The slyly comic book-inspired hip hop of Czarface clearly has it's genesis in fits and starts on Egoclapper, laced by clever soundtrack dialog samples that should appeal to MF Doom's material at the time, but it's straight forward exciting and forcefully delivered gritty hip hop too, making a pretty great mix of hard hitting and eccentric. Includes the title track, "Warlords" with Celph Titled, Trademarc & Karma, "Mind On Fire", "Tranquilizer", "Street Stigma" with Rack Lo", "Incredible Hulk Rap" with Termanology, "Boston Garden Rap" with Raydar Ellis & Jawn LP, Vinyl record album

Slug and Murs are back – and with their first album that isn't a tribute to a sexy female star! It's been awhile since the duo gave us their last album as Felt, and there's a nicely mature quality to the vocals – maybe a bit of wisdom with age, or a slightly world-weary vibe that gives the whole record a bit more depth than you'd expect. Ant, who produced their second set, is back as a core part of the group here – and the set also features guest work from Aesop Rock, The Grouch, Blimes, and Shepard Albertson. An auspicious name, but an intimate little record – one served up by the vocal duo of Wendy Simon and Eric Shaw – in a mode that's a fair bit like work from Jackie & Roy, but a bit more bop-oriented as well! The pair do a great job of riffing together on the upbeat numbers – trading lines in a horn-inspired vocalese way – and just like Jackie, Wendy steps out herself on a few of the more intimate numbers. Titles include some well-chosen tunes like "Miss Harper Goes Bizarre", "Love Webster's Definition", "Coconut Grove", and "I've Got Just About Everything" – plus versions of "Symphony Sid", "Everybody's Boppin", "My Favorite Things", and "Everybody Eats When They Come To My House". Brigitte Fontaine & AreskiTheatre Musical (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Monster Melodies (France), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99
One of the most obscure recordings by this amazing duo – singers Brigitte Fontaine and Areski, who you might know best from their work on the legendary Saravah Records at the start of the 70s! The work here isn't musical theater, but was instead recorded for French radio in 1973 – and is maybe even more experimental than some of the duo's other albums of the time – still this amazing blend of poetic lyrics, matched-up voices, and light acoustic instrumentation – but sometimes less song-based than at other points – with Fontaine really bringing a lot of subtle drama into her performance! The whole thing is beautiful – a much-needed addition to the small catalog of this legendary duo – on titles that include "Le Silence", "Intermede Theatral Part 1", "Nous Avons Tant Parle", "Bali", "Le Dragon", "Six Septembre", "Eros", and "La Renarde Et Le Belier Touffu". Foreign ExchangeLeave It All Behind ... LP
HBD, 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.98
The second album from Foreign Exchange – the formerly bi-continental project of North Carolina MC and soul singer Phonte of Little Brother, and transplanted Dutch producer Nicolay – who take an even deeper turn into spacey soul on Leave It All Behind! Given that Phonte is singing rather than rapping, you'd be tempted to say that Foreign Exchange has left hip hop behind, but hip hop is in the heart and soul – and the group was born of the idea of hip hop as an evolving art form – so rhymes or not, it's still hip hop in a way. The spacey, jazzy melodic groove here finds producer Nicolay in peak form – a nice balance between thumping bass, beats and mellow atmospherics, and the mood is impeccable. We're pretty much stunned at how well Phonte is developing as a vocalist, with laidback lead and overdubbed backing vocals that go back the heart & soul comment above. A left turn for a duo that was adventurous to begin, with an excellent move to the next level! Titles include "Daykeeper", "Take Off The Blues", "All Or Nothing/Coming Home For You", "I Wanna Know", "House Of Cards", "Sweeter Than You", "Valediction", "If She Breaks Your Heart", "If This Is Love", "Something To Behold" and "Leave It All Behind". Fraser & DeboltFraser & Debolt With Ian Guenther ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Very Good ... $4.99
Moody, folksy work from the Canadian duo of Fraser & Debolt – helped here by a bit of extra work on fiddle from Ian Guenther! The sound is often quite spare – acoustic guitars and vocals, with little else more than the guest fiddle – in a style that's nicely rough-edged, especially for Columbia Records at the time – and which makes the record feel more like some obscure indie effort than a release on a bigger label. Most of the tunes are originals, and quite compelling – with a darkly poetic sensibility that's right at home with labelmates Tim Hardin and Leonard Cohen – and titles include "Old Man On The Corner", "Warmth", "Stoney Day", "Pure Spring Water", "All This Paradise", "Gypsy Solitaire", and "Armstrong Tourest Rest Home". Bunker/Now Again, 1972. New Copy 3CD ... $9.99 20.98
One of the darkest albums of the Krautrock scene in the 70s – an album that was actually recorded in a WWII-era bunker – where the duo were free to open up their instruments, jam for a very long time, and play with the sorts of effects and techniques you might know from bigger groups of the period! Yet there's a brooding quality here that's different than Can, Faust, or other groups – maybe because German Oak were a duo without a very clear path forward, and also because recording an album in an underground concrete bunker was bound to produced some weird vibes on the session! One of the group members recalls in the notes that in the space, he couldn't help thinking of the trauma of WWII – and you can definitely hear that in the music, and see it in the look of the package – which carries tunes that include "Screaming Skeletons", "Missile Song", "Belle's Song", and "Nothing". Reedman Mats Gustafsson is in very cool territory here – blowing a variety of saxes, but also getting manipulated by the electric treatments of Wendy Gondeln – Mats' violin partner on the album's duo improvisations, but also a soundshaper with talents to be reckoned with! Gustafsson also opens up on some live electronics too, plus a bit of piano mate – and this electric side of his talents is a new one, but a great one too – mixing familiar improvisation with a larger sonic palette, in ways that almost make for a merging of free jazz and musique concrete! Hampshire & FoatHoneybear ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $24.99
The team of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat have already given us some amazing music on record – but this strangely-titled set may well be their crowning achievement so far! The set's got kind of a creepy look and feel – and a layout that replicates some of the more sophisticated UK jazz titles on the Argo Records label at the end of the 60s. And the style here is very much in keeping with that spirit – this straight mixture of light and darkness, delivered by the duo in a way that's more subtle than before – yet even more powerful too! Hampshire plays guitars, organ, and other keyboards – and Foat adds in more keyboards and bass, while both handle some other effects and sounds – but the real difference here is the album's use of larger string arrangements – not full orchestrations, but just the right kind of light colors and shadings that you might have heard on a record by Nick Drake, Colin Blunstone, or some of the other hipper British singers at the start of the 70s. The approach is more holistic than their previous jazz efforts – not entirely in that side of the spectrum – and more a beautiful record of rich yet melancholy instrumentals. Titles include "Crows Feet", "The Hive", "The Elderflower", "Honey Dreams", "Rain Clouds", "Winter Bound", and "The Fly & I". LP, Vinyl record album

Ovation/Lion, 1973. Used Gatefold ... $18.99
A beautiful early 70s psych folk set from the angelic vocal and songwriting duo of Pat Gefell and Jo D Andrews – their Refuge album for Ovation in 1973 – highlighted by their gorgeous vocals, but committed with lovely, lightly soaring arrangements! Save for a solid cover of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin penned "Sixty Years On", Gefell and Andrews wrote the songs here, and it's remarkably strong stuff! The duo vocals and harmonies are especially sweet. The Chicago-based production wisely leaves ample space in the arrangements for them to sort of loosely, emotively embellish with their voices – with string arrangements by co-producer George Andrews and an impressive roster of session players including bassist Phil Upchurch, drummer Don Simmons and percussionist Bobby Christian. Includes "Jenny", "Voice In The Wind", "To A Flame", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", "Refuge", "Song For Craig", "A Light Is Shining", "Feel The Spirit" and more. A beautiful extended composition for the coronavirus generation – a piece written for cello and percussion in a very minimal way that builds and shifts over time – all to examine the "care and empathy that emerge when two lives share space"! That care is very clear here – as the work is performed by the duo Two-Way Street – which features Ashlee Booth on cello and Adam Lion on percussion – players who certainly have a lot of empathy for each others' strengths, and find them easily as they move between differing passages over the course of the 90 minute performance! The cello has a surprising array of sounds here – emerging as the percussion modes shift – and the whole thing proceeds with a sense of space and slow shift that would have made the early minimalists proud. Elektra/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 19.99
Important early work from The Incredible String Band – three albums in one great package! First up is the first album from the Incredible String Band – a real treasure from the trio of Clive Palmer, Mike Heron and Robin Williamson – who each sing and write, and bring unique charm to their own material! The sound is very folksy, and really lives up to their name – mostly just music on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar – served up in a blend that both echoes British traditional styles, yet paves the way for new expressions in the acid folk generation to come – especially on the group's original material. The group are really wonderful at this point – with a sound that drew them wide acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic – and titles include "Maybe Someday", "October Song", "When The Music Starts To Play"", "Schaeffer's Jig", "Womankind", "The Tree", "Whistle Tune", "Dandelion Blues", "Good As Gone", and "Footsteps Of The Heron". Next is 5000 Spirits – a UK psychedelic folk gem that finds the group challenging conventions across the board – both artful and inviting, it's wonderful stuff! At this point, Clive Palmer had left, and Mike Heron and Robin Williamson contribute lead vocals with the additional vocalist Licorice also taking lead on a few tunes, the sound is fleshed out with more accompaniment and a rich warmth on a bevy of instruments – guitar, sitar, bowed gimbri, finger cymbals, tamboura, oud, rattles, flute, bass and piano. Includes the lovely and oft-covered "The First Girl I Loved", plus "Chinese White", "No Sleep Blues", "Painting Box", "The Eyes Of Fate", "The Hedgehog's Song", "You Know What I Could Be", "Gently Tender", "Way Back In The 1960s" and more. On Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, The Incredible String Band are paired down to the core duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson – using the studio as a most impressive adjunct member of the group at this point! This is an extremely talented pair – each playing myriad instruments – sitar, organ, guitar, hammer dulcimer, harpsichord, gimbri, whistle, pipe, oud, mandolin, mouth harps and more. Previous vocal collaborator Licorice sings on one song, and Dolly Collins and David Snell contribute flute organ, piano and harp – but the main duos incredible way of layering their magic with multitracking in the studio the real masterstroke of the effort. Titles include "Koeoaddi There", "Witch's Hat", "The Water Song", "Swift As The Wind", "Nightfall", "Waltz Of The New Moon", "Three Is A Green Crown" and more. CD

Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1955. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
Two rare Storyville albums from the tremendous vocal team of Jackie & Roy – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Jackie & Roy – one of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". Sing Baby Sing is sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". Polysom (Brazil), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Great 80s grooves from this cool Brazilian duo – the guitar and vocals of Robson Jorge and a sweet range of keyboards from Lincoln Olivetti – tied together in a style that's got plenty of great electro soul touches! At some level, the album recalls some of the 80s grooves coming from the US soul scene at the time – but the music also has elements that reflect some of the Brazilian funk of groups like Unaio Black or Banda Black Rio, and maybe even some of the styles of Marcos Valle in the early 80s too! There's a depth to the instrumentation that reflects a stronger understanding of jazz than most groups of this nature – and the vocals often take more of a place on the sidelines in favor of the instrumentation. The jazz sound is underscored by work from Marcio Montarroyos on trumpet and Leo Gandelman on baritone sax – and titles include "Eva", "Jorgea Corisco", "No Bom Sentido", "Raton", "Squash", "Ginga", and "Alegrias".
