✨✧ Du-RitesJheri Curl/Du-Vibrations ... 7-inch
Ilegalia, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's plenty of hard drums at the start of "Jheri Curl" – very much in a classic break style, but complicated by a very cool bassline too – while riffing guitar makes all these spooky sounds throughout, matched by a bit of cool vocalizations! "Du-Vibrations" has lots more drums too – almost like something that Mark The 45 King would have cooked up – as the bass gets a bit wilder, and encourages the guitar to do the same! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Duke EllingtonIndigos ... LP
Columbia, 1957. Very Good+ ... $12.99
One of Duke Ellington's best albums of the 50s – a well-conceived session of dark moody tracks that revisits a few old favorites, hits a few standards, and offers a new gem that's right up there with the classics! The "indigos" title is taken very seriously here – as the album's awash in blue tones and darker hues – a bit Kenton in inspiration, but carried off with a lot more intimacy and sense of soul throughout. The group by this point is completely mature – and old bandmates like Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, Cat Anderson and Ray Nance on trumpets, and Jimmy Woode on bass all fit together perfectly under Ellington's direction. Titles include Duke's great "The Sky Fell Down", plus "Mood Indigo", "Autumn Leaves", "Tenderly", "Dancing In The Dark", "Where Or When", and "Solitude". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousRocking On Sunshine – Streetwise/Partytime Shakedown Dubs & Instrumentals ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 80s. New Copy ... $26.99
Excellent 12" tracks from the Streetwise/Partytime label – the kind of unusual dubs, instrumentals, and remixes the company always put on its extended singles – usually numbers that are sparkling with just the right sort of electro touches that made these records real favorites for both the breakers in the streets and the mixers in the club! Streetwise had a number of big hits back in the day, but most of these numbers are non-vocal versions of those songs – and really show the great ear for beats that helped make the label one of the key forces for bringing the sound of hip hop back into soul music. Titles include "Reprise Me" by Paul Simpson Connection, "Don't Take Your Love Away (inst)" by Pushe, "Music Is The Answer (dub)" by Colonel Abrams, "Jet Set (inst)" by Dr John, "Slack (funkhouse mix)" by Slack, "Living For The Weekend (rough mix)" by Rockers Revenge, "Funky Soul Makossa (free beats)" by Nairobi & The Awesome Foursome, "I Don't Need Your Handouts (inst)" by Citispeak with Jeanne Harris, and "See The Light/Feel The Heat (dub)" by Air Force 1. ✨✧ Joe Gibbs & The ProfessionalsNo Bones For The Dogs – Dubs From The Mighty Two 1974-1979 ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
We've always loved Joe Gibb's productions, especially his dubs, with Erroll Thompson piloting the mixing desk, and have been waiting for one of the great revive labels to put together a set. At last, Pressure Sounds steps up to the plate, and delivers the goods with this mighty set of fat, thick grooves. Eighteen tracks in all: "I Stand Accused" (version of Easy Take It Easy), "I Am Not Ashamed Version", "Six Foot Six" (version of Burial), "Su Su Version", "Burning Version" (version of Burn Babylon), "Roots Kunte Kinte" (version of Hypocrites), "Give It To Jah" (Heart & Soul Version), "The Road Is Rough" (version of Time Will Tell), "No Mans Land" (version to Up Park Camp), "War" (Medley Studio One Version), "No Bones For The Dogs" (version to Why Birds Follow Spring), "War Is Over" (version to Tribal War), "Jah Jah See Them A Come Version", "Babylon Bridge (12" version)" , "Fulfilment/Prophesy Reveal" (version to 2 Sevens Clash), "Earthquake" , "Financial Business" (Commercial Business version to Love Is Not A Gamble) and "Alan, Hit By A Larry" (version to Cool Out Son). AmabanoAmsterdam Ticket (with bonus download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". Jackie & RoyJackie & Roy (plus Sing Baby Sing) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1955. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
Two rare Storyville albums from the tremendous vocal team of Jackie & Roy – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Jackie & Roy – one of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". Sing Baby Sing is sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". Charles MingusMingus At The Bohemia ... CD
Debut/OJC, 1955. Used ... $8.99
Seminal early work from Charles Mingus – a session that really shows him beginning to work in tightly arranged, deeply resonant styles – pushing much more deeply towards the brilliance of the late 50s! The set's recorded with a great lineup that includes Mal Waldron, Max Roach, and the enigmatic George Barrow on tenor – and includes a fantastic reading of "Percussion Discussion", played here by Roach and Mingus as a drum and bass duet (as opposed to Roach solo, as on a later version.) Also features the brilliant "All The Things You C-Sharp", a pivotal track in the Mingus book, and one of our favorites ever by him – plus "Septemberly", "Work Song", and "Jump Monk". CD includes two bonus tracks ; alternate takes of "Jump Monk" & "All The Things You C-Sharp". CD

A lost Thelonious Monk treasure from the 60s – a really open-ended live set recorded in LA in 1964, but not issued by Columbia until the early 80s – making the package a wonderful re-discover of Monk's genius during these years! The tunes are much more freewheeling than some of the studio work cut by Monk's quartet at the time – stretched out takes on Monkish favorites, played by Thelonious on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – all with plenty of room for extended solos. Titles include "Bemsha Swing", "Blue Monk", "Well You Needn't", "Misterioso", "Gallops Gallop", and "Nutty". CD

Phillippe Saisse Acoustique TrioMy Favorite Songs ... CD
441, 2003. Used ... $6.99
Wonderful work from a real up-and-comer – a bright young jazz artist who seems to get better and better with each new record! Philippe Saisse takes his "acoustic" tag here with a grain of salt – as the French keyboardist also plays Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer organ, and vibes on the set – leaving the real acoustics to the wonderful bass and drum work of the rhythm section. The distinction is a strong one, though – as the album's one of Saisse's first to not feature a lot of extra production and studio work – and instead has the keyboardist stretching out in territory that's extremely warm and soulful. As the title implies, the tunes are some of Saisse's favorites – both older covers and standards, plus some very nice original tunes. 2 tracks feature vocals by Nneka Morton – and titles include "Song For Jun", "Alone Again Naturally", "I'm Not In Love", "Poem For 15", "Michelle", "Once", "Song For Saisse", and "About Time". ✨✧ Frank Sinatra/Phil Spector/Elvis Presley/Bing Crosby/Ella FitzgeraldChristmas Tale – Timeless Classic Albums (Jolly Christmas/Christmas Gift To You/Christmas Album/Merry Christmas/Swinging Christmas) (5CD set) ... CD
Vinylogy (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Just Sold Out!
A great set of Christmas classics – five albums, each represented with LP-styled artwork in a box of 5 CDs! First up is Jolly Christmas by Frank Sinatra – one of the greatest Christmas albums of the 20th century – a rich tapestry of sadness and longing from Ol' Blue Eyes himself! Sure, most folks think that Christmas albums are supposed to be cheery and celebratory – but Frank, coming off of his best Wee Small Hours years at Capitol, rightly chose the sadder side of Christmas – and put together an album full of songs that really get at the bluer side of the holiday. Side one of the set includes some tremendous secular songs – the kind of mid-century tunes that often had a dark undercurrent of separation and unfulfilled desire – masquerading as holiday tunes, but in Frank's hands, coming off more like smokey late night tunes of lost love and wasted life. Side two's got some more spiritual-oriented tunes – but again, done by Frank, with arrangements by Gordon Jenkins, these tunes come off with a lot less celebratory spirit than you'd expect. Titles include "The Christmas Waltz", "Mistletoe & Holly", "The Christmas Song", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear", and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". Next is A Christmas Gift To You – Phil Spector's classic Christmas album – a swirling delight of 60s pop and soul numbers, still one of the greatest full Christmas LPs ever recorded! The whole thing is wonderful – a mix of soul, rock, and pop – all produced with that classic "wall of sound" style that made Phil Spector such an early production genius in the 60s! The music is from those magical times when boundary-busting art and craft were mixed perfectly with pop styles that anyone could instantly fall in love with – and titles include "Frosty The Snowman" by The Ronettes, "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans, "Marshmallow World" by Darlene Love, "Sleigh Ride" by The Ronnettes, "Winter Wonderland" by Darlene Love, "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town" by The Crystals, and "Silent Night" by Phil and other artists on the set! Next is Elvis Christmas Album – an early Holiday gem from Elvis Presley – a set that had RCA Records wisely rushing the young singer into the studio to cut a host of Christmas tunes – which ensured that Elvis would be spinning on the turntable for many seasons to come! Titles include "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Silent Night", "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and "Santa Bring My Baby Back". Next is Merry Christmas from Bing Crosby – which may well be THE Christmas album of the 20th century – a 50s issue of 40s singles cut by Der Bingle, packaged in a cover with a classic cover image that's ensured that the record stayed in print for dozens of Decembers in years to come! Given that Bing virtually owned Christmas on TV during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the album's place in popular music is well-earned – and honestly, Bing's "aw shucks, I'm just reg'lar folks" sort of approach to these tunes really helped create a kind of common man secular side to the Holidays that forever transformed America's celebration of the season. Or maybe we're going to far with this one . . . But whatever the case, the album's a standard, and one we were certainly raised on. Titles include "Silver Bells", "Jingle Bells", "Silent Night", "White Christmas", "Adeste Fideles", "Faith Of Our Fathers", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", and "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas". Last up is Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! Grover Washington JrAll My Tomorrows/Soulful Strut/Breath Of Heaven ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1994/1996/1997. New Copy 3CDs ... $8.99
A trio of 90s albums from Grover Washington! All My Tomorrows is an overlooked gem from reedman Grover – recorded in his later years, but a set that's actually got more of an acoustic style overall – one that goes back to the roots farther than any of Grover's fusion records! Washington's a great straight player in this setting – filled with soul on tenor and soprano sax – and working with top-shelf small group players like Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, Bobby Watson on alto, and Robin Eubanks on trombone. Guitarist Romero Lumbambo arranged one great Brazilian-tinged number – and other arrangements are by Grover, Larry Willis, Slide Hampton, and Freddy Cole – who sings on two tracks too. Titles include "E Preciso Perdoar", "Happenstance", "All My Tomorrows", "Nature Boy", "Flamingo", and "Estate". Soulful Strut is bouncy soul from Grover Washington – a set that returns to his earlier roots in a space between soulful fusion and R&B! The slinky Washington soprano sax gets plenty of space in this set – blown with those seductive notes that always made Grover one of the most distinctive players on the instrument – and the backings often have this gentle R&B groove that's even stronger on the few cuts here with vocals. Titles include "Soulful Strut", "Bordertown", "Village Groove", "I Can Count The Times", "Headman's Hunt", and "Can You Stop The Rain". Breath Of Heaven is a holiday record from Grover Washington – but one that's got a fair bit more to offer than just the usual Christmas tunes! The set mixes older favorites and lesser-known numbers – all done in that soulful fusion style that Washington brought to his records from other seasons of the years – set up here with the leader on alto, tenor, and soprano sax – amidst arrangements from vibist Joe Lock, and keyboardist Donald Robinson, and guitarist Hiram Bullock – all of whom play on the record. Lisa Fischer sings on one number, but most of the record is instrumental – and titles include "Breath Of Heaven", "The Magi's Song/A Child Is Born", "I Wonder As I Wonder", "Christmas Time Is Here", "The Love In His Infant Eyes", and "Christmas Day Chant". ✨✧ Roy PorterInner Feelings (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Vistone/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A crazy bit of funk from drummer Roy Porter – a player who first rose to fame during the LA bop years of the late 40s, but who sounds even hipper here in the 70s! The album's got a madly skittish approach to funk – one that's highly rhythmic, but often in unconventional ways – somewhat similar to Redd Holt's excellent albums for the Paula label. Roy plays drums, percussion, and sings a bit – and the grooves run from break-heavy instrumentals to even cooler numbers that bring in more of a sense of flow and soul – really opening things up beyond any simple 70s jazz funk cliches, and hitting some really wicked new territory! Instrumentation includes plenty of great horns, electric piano, guitar, and even a bit of Arp – all used in really inventive and creative ways. Titles include the classic crate-digging favorites "Panama" and "Party Time", plus a vocal version of "Jessica", a cover of Jobim's "Waver-ing", and another nice original called "Funny Feelin'"! Tremendous stuff all the way through! CD

✨✧ Julius Hemphill (Mbari)Dogon AD (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1972/1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal session from the St Louis scene of the early 70s – one that was humming nearly as much as Chicago was with the AACM at the time! As with the larger organization in the Windy City, St Louis had the Black Artists Group – of which Julius Hemphill was a key member, forming fresh new ideas in improvisatory jazz with players who went onto have an undeniable impact on the global scene as well. This album's one of the standout recordings of the Black Artists era at its best – a record produced by Hemphill, but equally balanced between his own alto and flute, the trumpet of Baikida Carroll, cello of Abdul Wadud, and drums of Phillip Wilson – plus a bit of added baritone from Haimet Bluiett. The rhythms are quite open, but there's also a nice sense of structure to the record too – a bridge between spiritual and free jazz that prefaces the impact that both Hemphill and Bluiett would have on the New York loft jazz generation. Titles include "Dogon AD", "Rites", and "The Painter". CD

Columbia/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A great reworking of a classic Columbia Records Christmas album from the 60s – done here in a format that replicates the exclusive tracks on the original release, and also includes some bonus late 60s rock Christmas tunes too! The core of the record is a great example of the way that folks celebrated the holiday during the postwar years – filling up their middle class living rooms with both secular and spiritual tunes, mixing a bit of jazz with a bit of easy listening – all in a mellow mode that was perfect for those late-evening eggnogs! Titles on the core album include "The Christmas Waltz" by Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence, "O Come All Ye Faithful/Gesu Bambino" by Percy Faith, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Ray Coniff, "Christmas Is" by Harry Simeone Chorale, "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" by Andre Previn, "The Christmas Song" by Johnny Mathis, and "Away In A Manger" by Mahalia Jackson. Brilliant work from the young John Fahey – a record that instantly captures its time-bending feel with its title, and which more than delivers on its promise with the music! The songs here are hardly real "plantation favorites", but Fahey evokes this antebellum sensibility with his sound – pre-blues, pre-folk modes that are actually his own new inventions on the guitar at the time – a cosmic intertwining of tradition and individual vision that was first set fire with records like this, then continued to inspire for decades to come. Fahey plays solo throughout – save for one duet with William Barth – and titles include "Wine & Roses", "How Long", "On The Banks Of The Owchita", 'Worried Blues", "What The Sun Said", "Revelation On The Banks Of The Pawtuxent", "Poor Boy", "Variations On The Coocoo", "The Last Steam Engine Train", "Give Me Corn Bread When I'm Hungry", and "Dance Of Death". Some of the finest Peruvian grooves of the 60s and 70s – served up by three different groups headed by reedman Nilo Espinosa, plus a few other combos as well! Nilo's got a way with a groove that's totally unique – a bit soul jazz a times, influenced by bossa at others, and sometimes even moving into sweet electric fusion – always with a very pronounced sense of rhythm that makes nearly all of his numbers into the kind of groovers that can easily traverse the globe far from their roots in the Peruvian scene! The package features work from the mid 60s Los Hilton's, the early 70s Bossa 70, and the mid 70s Nil's Jazz Ensemble – the last of whom have been favorites for years with crate-diggers, due to their use of electric keyboards and very tasty drums! An experimental sound library set from Egisto Macchi, but one that's got a really organic sort of vibe – as the music was done for a film that looked at the rites and superstitions of the south of Italy – and gets some really well-deserved spooky sounds in the process! Some moments almost feel ethnographic, while others are more in an abstract range of expression, but still relatively tuneful – maybe prefacing that later offshoot of UK industrial creativity that would emerge in the generation of Hafler Trio, Zoviet France, and Nocturnal Emissions. Instrumentation includes vibes, cello, piano, flute, and organ – but often used in very unusual ways – on titles that include "Sette Aerofoni", "Un Violoncello Magico", "Vibrafono Con Bocca", "Violento Con Grido Vibrafono", and "Tappeto Aerofoni". Now Again, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
A contemporary record, but one that's got all the depth, warmth, and complexity of some of our favorites from the 70s – music that more than strongly lives up to the legacy of Egberto Gismonti and Edu Lobo! Fabiano Do Nascimento has a way of mixing acoustic guitar with really compelling arrangements – never too large to drown out his lead, but with complex rhythmic changes and all the right sort of energy that makes the whole thing way more than just another album of acoustic guitar – almost as if you had Baden Powell working with charts from Hermeto Pascoal, to give the whole thing a sense of flow that has the guitar pulling the percussion, the percussion pulling the guitar, and all these great colors and tones letting loose in the process. Titles include "Malandro", "Tributo", "Rio Tapajos", "Partiu", "Mente Azul", "Amanhecer", "Ilhas", and "Preludio Amazonico". CD
Also available Preludio ... LP 19.99

Neon PhilharmonicBrilliant Colors – The Complete Warner Bros Recordings (Moth Confesses/Neon Philharmonic/singles) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
A pair of amazing albums – and a huge amount of bonus material too – all from one of the coolest groups on Warner Brothers at the end of the 60s! First up is the record The Moth Confesses – one of our favorite albums ever from the genius moment of late 60s Warner Brothers – a set we'd rank right up there next to our favorites by Van Dyke Parks and Harper's Bizarre! The set's billed as a "phonograph opera", written by Tupper Saussy – and it's served up with these fantastic arrangements that are ambitious, but nicely handled, too – with lots of groovy currents that keep the whole thing far from soppier territory of cats like Rod McKuen, and always done with that great sense of wit that makes this Warner era so great! There's definitely a few tuneful tracks that could spin as Sunshine Pop hits – but the whole thing's really better taken as a whole, as the way everything comes together with a sense of mood and tone is completely sublime – really a lost aesthetic, and one that deserves new discovery all these many years later. Titles include "Morning Girl", "Brilliant Colors", "Little Sparrow", "The Last Time I Saw Jacqueline", "Cowboy", and "The New Life Out There". Next Is Neon Philharmonic – the second sublime album from Neon Philharmonic – and one that seems to go even deeper than the first in its blend of ambitious musical themes and mature lyrical ideas! The presentation here is even more symphonic than on the first record – but at a level that's never soppy or sleepy – as there's a gentle groove on most tracks, loping around in these really lovely modes that make the tunes sparkle and glisten with the best sort of late 60s Warner Brothers wit! There's this wonderful mix of longing, nostalgia, and a kind of new vision for post-60s adulthood to the record – very hard to describe, but completely wonderful – at once completely heartfelt, but also with a great sense of distance on itself. Titles include "Long John The Pirate", "Do You Remember Dresden", "You Lied", "Forever Hold Your Peace", "Harry", and the wonderful "F Scott Fitzgerald & William Shakespeare". The 22 bonus tracks are especially amazing – rare singles, b-sides, and even some radio spots too – a huge amount of added genius from this incredible group. Bonus titles include "Letters Crossing", "Jody", "Better Times", "A Little Love", "Flowers For Your Pillow", "Snow", "Clouds", "To Be Continued", and "Keep The Faith In Me". CD

Piero PiccioniCamille 2000 ... CD
Camille 3000 (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $36.99
One of the coolest classics from the glory days of the Italian soundtrack scene – a set that perfectly brings together all the funky, jazz, and mod-styled touches of the great Piero Piccioni – on a record that's maybe had more life over the years than the film did on the screen! The mix of instruments here is completely sublime – with some especially wonderful use of Hammond, but with very offbeat sounds – next to flute, warmer woodwinds, and some wicked basslines that hit the hippest sort of funk soundtrack modes. The recording quality is amazing, too – with unusual isolation and shading used on the instruments, to further make the sound magic – and titles include "Funky Lovers", "Pearls", "Slow Flute Beat", "Charms", "Brasil 2000", "Tears In Brasil", "Camille 2000", and "Tears In Rome". One of our all-time favorites – with 28 tracks in all, including some great alternate takes! CD

Cecil Taylor/Buell NeidlingerNew York City R&B ... LP
Candid, 1961. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
An early 60s session by Cecil Taylor for Candid, and a record that's one of our favorites by him from the early years! Despite the seemingly odd use of the term "R&B" in the title, the record's actually got a sound that's a bit more soulful than usual for Cecil, with surprising use of blue chords and deep rhythms that make for tunes with a different feel at points – yet a groove that's still as modern as you might expect from Taylor! Neidlinger was actually the leader on this session, which we think wasn't issued except for the Jazzman and Barnaby series that dug through the Candid vaults some years after this it was recorded – so they took advantage of Taylor's greater notoriety when they cooked up the packaging. Other sidemen include Archie Shepp, Billy Higgins, Dennis Charles, Clark Terry, Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd. 4 numbers in all, "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Cell Walk For Celeste", "OP", and "Cindy's Main Mood". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousEasy Christmas Now – Groovy Carols For A Cozy Winter ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $16.99
A wonderfully groovy set of Christmas tracks – one done in a style very similar to the Get Easy Snow compilations – as you might guess from the title! The selection here is great – with a few perennial favorites, a few rare gems, and a great middle stretch of wonderful bits from some of the grooviest artists of the 60s and 70s – a great antidote to some of the too-played holiday music you might hear during the 12th month of the year! Titles include "Santa Claus Is Definitely Hear To Stay" by James Brown, "Close Your Mouth It's Christmas" by Free Design, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Jimmy McGriff, "Snow" by Claudine Longet, "Black Christmas" by The Emotions, "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" by The Temptations, "Christmas Gift" by Margie Joseph, "Winter Warm" by Bob Crewe Generation, "Snow Flakes" by The Ventures, "Winter Symphony" by The Beach Boys, "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway, "Children Go Where I Send Thee" by Kenny Burrell, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Ray Anthony & His Bookends, "Swinging Christmas" by Helmut Zacharias, and "Jingo Jango" by Bert Kaempfert. Verve, 1950s/1960s/2016. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A collection of Holiday tracks both old and new – pulled from the catalog of Verve Records, and a fair bit of the larger Universal jazz catalog too! The material here mixes old favorites with a few newer recordings – tracks that show that great resonance between jazz vocal styles and Christmas tunes – a pairing that never seems to get old, and which can make for some especially warm moments during the season. Titles include "The Christmas Song" by Mel Torme, "Christmas Time Is Here" by Patti Austin, "It Must Be Christmas" by Judy Holliday, "Peace On Earth" by Peggy Lee, "There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays" by Betty Carter, "Peace" by Norah Jones, "Zat You Santa Claus" by Louis Armstrong, "Silent Night" by Dinah Washington, "White Christmas" by Ella Fitzgerald, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Diane Schuur, "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" by Billie Holiday, and "Winter Wonderland" by Shirley Horn. Cold Busted, 2016. Used ... $4.99
A warmly bumping beathead Christmas compilation from the Cold Busted label – with some great abstract hip hop instrumental takes on holiday classics and original material alike – a real gem! The material walks a fine line thematically, riffing on seasonal favorites beats and atmosphere that's just tripped out enough. It's a welcome treat – the kind of set we'll be happy to spin at Dusty Groove holiday parties for years to come! 15 tracks in all: "Let It Snow" by Bahia Deluxe, "Nutcase Suite" by Astro Raph", "Santa's Trip" by Clouded, "Beanie Winter" by Amerigo Gazaway, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by DJ Buzzword, "Around The Christmas Tree" by Brandon Bass & Curiousity and more. ✨✧ Pastor TL BarrettLike A Ship (Without A Sail) ... LP
Mt Zion/Numero, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A soul record we'd put up there with some of our favorites produced in Chicago during the early 70s – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir, of Mt. Zion Baptist Church – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was cut at the affordable Sound Market Studio – but behind the soaring, spirited lead and chorus vocal arrangements are players supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too. Raw drums, grooving organ, and incredible bass lines lay the foundation, but it's the voices that really shine on this completely wonderful, totally essential set! Titles include "Like A Ship", "Wonderful", "It's Me O Lord", "Ever Since", "Nobody Knows", "Joyful Noice", "Medley/Dr. Watts Hymn & The Disciples Prayer" and "Blessed Quietness". ✨✧ Jive FiveComplete United Artists Recordings – I'm A Happy Man ... CD
EMI, 1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album of group soul – recorded by indie label favorites The Jive Five, and just about their only album for a big label. Horace Ott produced and arranged, and he nicely takes the group's earlier doo wop style into a 60s harmony groove – adding in some arrangements that have a bit more of a kick and a northern groove, and helping the group come up with some tasty little numbers filled with hooks and riffs that let them still show off their vocal skills. Titles include "I'm A Happy Man", "Prove Every Word You Say", "I Remember When", "Hang On The Corner", "A Bench In The Park", "Falling Tears", and "Ha Ha". CD

✨✧ Lalo SchifrinBullitt – Original Soundtrack (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Film Score Monthly, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing new take on the legendary Bullitt soundtrack – one that features the full original album, plus 19 more bonus tracks from the film! There's almost 80 minutes of music on this bad baby, and every second of it is pure Lalo Schifrin genius – a beautiful blend of jazz, bossa, and other groovy elements – filtered with some occasional dramatic touches too – easily one of the most perfect records that Schifrin ever cut, and that's saying a hell of a lot, given his reputation for perfection! There's lots of cool bubbling electric bass, lilting keyboards, and moody breezy rhythms – nearly every cut's a winner, and if you like his other work, we can bet that this will become one of your favorites. As with other Screen Archives productions, the quality level is amazing – new mastering, and a huge amount of notes – with core album tunes that include "Bullitt", "Room 26", "On the Way To San Mateo", and "Shifting Gears" – and bonus tracks that include film versions of "Air Terminal", "Just Coffee", "Music To Interrogate By", "Shifting Gears", "On The Way To San Mateo", "Song For Cathy", "Architect's Building", "Quiet Morning", "Ice Pick Mike", and "Ross". ✨✧ Arthur VerocaiArthur Verocai ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Titles include "Presente Grego", "Caboclo", "Pelas Sombras", "O Mapa", "Sylvia", "Karina", "Velho Parente", and "Dedicada A Ela". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MomusPhilosophy Of Momus ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last truly brilliant albums from Momus – even if it's got a few dodgy tracks! The problem with this one is that it's a lot longer than his albums for Creation – 19 tracks in all, about 8 or 9 of which should have stayed in the ash bin. But amongst those clunkers, there's some really incredible work – perfect little tunes that have all the dark edgey quality of earlier years, with a well-composed pop sensibility that gives them more hooks than a room full of coat racks. Some of these tunes are incredible treasures, the kind we'd never want to part with. Our favorites include "Red Pyjamas", "Slide Projector Lie Detector", "I Had A Girl", "Paranoid Acoustic Seduction Machine", and "The Loneliness Of Lift Music". CD

London Calling (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A really lost slice of work from the legendary Scott Walker – material recorded for his short-lived TV show and specials for the BBC in the late 60s! Scott here is at the height of his powers – the god-like voice from the albums Scott 1 through Scott 4 – working mostly with his arranger Wally Stott, on a mix of material that includes some favorites from the records, done in new TV versions, plus a number of other tracks that we've never heard Scott sing before! The original videos of the broadcasts have been lost forever, but these audio records remain – and the CDs also feature patter from Scott, some introductions, and guest performances from Kiki Dee, Blossom Dearie, OC Smith, Billy Preston, and others.
