✨✧ DriveCan You Feel It ... LP
Gallo/We Are Busy Bodies (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A South African jazz set from the 70s, but one with a very different vibe than most – stretched out nicely in ways that really let the tunes find their way! The group here is led by alto saxophonist H Sithole, but even more important is the work of a young Bekhi Mseleku – an artist we love for later recordings, who really adds a lot to the sound here on Hammond and electric piano – working in these long-spun lines that dance around the bass, guitar, and drums – while brothers open up on solos too – S Sithole on tenor and baritone, and D Sithole on trumpet. Titles include "Way Back Fifties", "Together", and "Can You Feel It". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ten Wheel Drive with Genya RavanBrief Replies ... LP
Polydor, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard-rockin bluesey funky work from Genya and crew – with lots of great guitar bits ripping around, and some surprisingly strong funky undercurrents working at the bottom of the set! Think Betty Davis gone a bit more rock, and you've got a very good idea of the sound of this one – but also expect a few nice mellower cuts too. Michael Zager arranged, and tracks include "Brief Replies", "Pulse", "Come Live With Me", "A View Of Soft", and "Last Of The Line". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Santiago (Neftali Santiago)22 Somerset Drive – 1976 to 1978 ... CD
Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Titles include "Land Of The Leaping No No", "Feelin Good", "Bionic Funk", "Alone Together", "Freakin", "To & From Gamma 4", "Set It Free", "Let Out Your Beats", and "Everybody Hears But Nobody Listens". ✨✧ Grady TateAfter The Long Drive Home (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Skye/Muzak (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99
Easily our favorite album ever by Grady Tate – a complex suite of tracks about adult love, loss, and redemption – put together with a focus and clarity that even surpasses his classic Windmills Of My Mind record! The whole thing was arranged and conducted by Harold Wheeler – who sets Grady up in a batch of tunes that are easily some of the best from that late 60s era when writers like Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb had inspired countless others to spin mature tales of human interaction – in a style that's far from pop, and beautifully mature all the way through. If you've always dug the tune "Sack Full Of Dreams" from Tate's Windmills album, this whole set is done in a similar mode – with cuts that include "I'll Try Again", "I Can Deliver", "Follow The Path", "Bridges", and "There's Nothing Between Us Now" – as well as the completely sublime title track! Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Very Good- ... $19.99
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group with brother Nat on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums – and a young Bobby Timmons on piano, really cooking things up with tremendous drive, energy, and a sense of the groove! Titles include a great workout on Timmons' classic "This Here", plus originals "You Got It" and Spontaneous Combustion", and a great version of "Hi Fly". Soul jazz at its best, by one of the groups who gave the genre its name in the first place! LP, Vinyl record album
(Small blue label Bill Grauer Productions pressing, RLP 12-311, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, heavy edge wear, and discoloration from age.)

Alessandro AlessandroniForever ... CD
Four Flies (Italy), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99
New material from the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni – one of the key forces in helping define the sound of Italian film scores in the 60s and sound library material in the 70s – still alive and well here, and working in a style that's maybe a more intimately focused presentation of his talents! The maestro handles lead instruments throughout, echoing all of the special solo sound he'd use on soundtracks – both under his own name, and with other composers, like Ennio Morricone – and the set features Alessandroni on guitars, keyboard, recorder, mandolin, and accordion – plus some of his famous whistling work too! The set was produced by his son, who handles some other instruments too – and there's light touches of strings on a number of tunes. Titles include "My Moon", "Una Favola", "The Milky Way", "Walking On The Lane", "Melody On The Hill", "A Waltz Under The Stars", "Summer Of Emotions", "Drive To Nowhere", and "Rhino Poaching". CD

John Barry/Shirley BasseyGoldfinger ... LP
United Artists, 1964. Very Good ... $3.99
The soundtrack that put John Barry over the top – and to many, THE James Bond soundtrack! The album chills from the first notes of the haunting title theme – the majestic "Goldfinger", sung by Shirley Bassey with a tone that's as dangerous as a razor-sharp hat spinning through the air! Barry then takes over with some wonderful instrumentals – a blend of crime jazz, mood pieces, chase themes, and more – all peppered with that dark dark Bond theme that we love so much! Titles include "Into Miami", "Teasing The Korean", "Alpine Drive", "Bond Back In Action", "Gassing The Gangsters", and "Death Of Goldfinger". LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark leaping-off point for The Beatles – and a record that really paved the way for countless new ideas to come! The mix of catchy pop and freer ideas here is really wonderful – tunes that introduce a whole new mature world in mainstream music – yet manage to have all the catchy complexity of the earlier years too. Production, songwriting, and delivery is superb – and this version features 14 songs that include "Drive My Car", "Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man", "Think For Yourself", "The Word", "What Goes On", "Girl", "I'm Looking Through You", and "Run For Your Life"". David BowieAladdin Sane (45th anniversary silver vinyl pressing) ... LP
Virgin, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". ✨✧ Willy BridgesBridges To Cross ... LP
Buddah, 1977. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A real lost classic from the New York club years of the mid 70s – sweetly soulful tracks recorded at Sigma Sound "North" up in Manhattan – but with the same sweeping, soaring sound as the best Philly work of the time. Willy's a saxophonist, blowing soulfully on a set of tracks arranged by David Van DePitte, Horace Ott, and Willy himself – all kind of in a "disco meets jazz" mode that comes across quite nicely, with a Philly-styled instrumental groove. The leadoff cut "Riverside Drive" is worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "So Far Away", "Taking Care of Business", "Flower Grows in Springtime", and "True Love Comes Along". Jimmy Briscoe & The Little BeaversMy Ebony Princess ... CD
Pi Kappa/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
An east coast harmony classic from Jimmy Briscoe & The Little Beavers – a sweetly-voiced young soul group with a really positive sound! Jimmy and the group have a groove that's more mature than some of the other young soul acts to emerge in the wake of the Jackson Five – and the tracks on the set are a great balance of gentle ballads and more forceful numbers, done in modes that share a lot with some of the best New Jersey groups of the time, particularly those on the All-Platinum label. Production is full and rich – never too much so overpower the vocals, but with some wonderfully chosen instrumental touches from maestro Paul Kyser – but it's Jimmy's heartbreaking vocals that really drive the set. Titles include "My Ebony Princess", "I Only Feel This Way When I'm With You", "Theme From Forever", "Where Were You", "Pack Up", "My Fallen Angel", "Together", and "Country to the City". CD

✨✧ James BrownMotherlode – Unreleased Original Recordings (expanded version) ... LP
Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
One of the greatest albums ever from James Brown – even if it wasn't issued during his classic run of funk records in the early 70s! Yet the material here is all from that time – recorded by Polydor when James and the JBs were completely kicking ass in the studio – turning out these monstrous longform funk jams that often gave up too much material to fit on all of his albums – which makes this package an overdue dip into the vaults to rescue some of those treasures! The package first saw the light of day in 1988 – at a time when the genius of James was being rediscovered by younger hip hoppers and DJs – and the set is a love letter to all that James had to offer that scene – with gems that include the lost soul classic "She's The One", a duet with Bobby Byrd called "Since You Been Gone", a live version of "There It Is", an untitled instrumental and another instrumental one called "Funk Bomb" – plus a huge long 9 minute version of the great "People Get Up & Drive Your Funky Soul" from Slaughter's Big Ripoff, and the cuts "Say It Loud & Live", and "Baby Here I Come". Plus, this expanded version also features a 7 minute version of "I Got Ants In My Pants", the track "You've Changed", and a 12 minute alternate mix of "Bodyheat". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Easily one of the funkiest albums that James Brown ever recorded – and one of his few entries into the blacksploitation genre of the 70s! James really outdid himself for this one – working at a hard burning pace that had the JBs cooking up some killer funk for just about every number in the set – and which also has James himself stepping out vocally for a few key tracks. The album features the massive groover "People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul" – a slamming track that beats nearly every number in the JB 70s catalog – plus other cuts that include "To My Brother", "Brother Rapp", "Sexy Sexy Sexy", "Slaughter Theme", "Transmogrification", "King Slaughter", and "How Long Can I Keep It Up". United Artists/Mute, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.98
A mindblowing classic from Can – a set that has the group just getting better with each new record – to a point where it's the early 70s, and they're already in territory that's completely their own! The set features long tracks that spin out beautifully – driven that that rhythmic drive that the group always had at their best – so different than some of their contemporaries who might have gotten stuck in a sonic corner and never found their way out – while Can was bursting forth with energy and imagination that has kept them still sounding amazing as the decades move on! The set's the last one with the mighty Damo Suzuki, but fortunately not the last with the incredible drums of Jaki Leibezeit – and titles include the 19 minute jam of "Bel Air" – plus "Future Days", "Spray", and "Moonshake". ChangeEverything & More – The Complete Collection 1980 to 2019 (Glow Of Love/Miracles/Sharing Your Love/This Is Your Time/Change Of Heart/Turn On Your Radio/Love 4 Love) (7CD set) ... CD
Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... $59.99 65.99
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda ... CD
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. ✨✧ CrampsLook Mom No Head! ... CD
Restless, 1991. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A totally fun later record from The Cramps – with solid roots rock, fuzzed out garagey stormers and vintage B-Movie imagery – as brilliantly as ever! By this point, The Cramps were understandably being championed for their killer live show more than their records, which is too bad, because this a gem that's been largely buried in the early 90s crypt. It's a nice mix of faster than usual paced punky numbers and their trademark, slower grooving melange of Chess Records, surf, rockabilly and all around mix of both pivotal and obscure influences. Includes "Dames, Booze, Chains And Boots", "Two Headed Sex Change", "Blow Up Your Mind", "Hardworkin' Man", "Miniskirt Stomp", "I Wanna Get In Your Pants", "Bend Over, I'll Drive", "Eyeball In My Martini", "Hipsille 29 BC" and "The Strangeness In Me". Make no mistake, these guys are the real deal – able to play loud and fast, in a way that even transforms some of the older material they throw into the mix alongside their originals – and despite the record's appearance on a major label, the handling of the material is rock solid throughout. Chess/BGO (UK), 1964/1968. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A pair of amazing all-star albums from Chess Records – back to back on a single CD! First up is Two Great Guitars – in which Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry come together in a really unique album for Chess Records in the 60s – and that's saying a lot, given all the groundbreaking sounds we heard from that label at the time! The format is quite unusual – as each side features a long instrumental jam that really lets the guitarists work out their differences – in modes that are almost proto-funk more than blues, rock, or soul – with lots of wicked guitar lines that are way ahead of their time in terms of recording space! The long tracks are "Chuck's Beat" and "Bo's Beat" – but the duo also shine brilliantly on the shorter tunes "Liverpool Drive" and "When The Saints Go Marching In". Next is The Super Super Blues Band – a group that definitely lives up to its name – given that the lineup features the Chess Records stalwarts Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters! The set's maybe a bit more in the mode of Wolf or Waters than some of Bo's own records – although there's a bit of that riffing spark of his at times – and the tracks are often nice and long, with more than enough room to make you feel like Phil Chess gave these guys plenty of space in the studio to hang out, and find the right way to interact. As much as we love Chess albums with short songs and a soulful punch, we really appreciate it when they can break format and open up on a session like this – which really helps create a unique moment on record! Titles include "Goin Down Slow", "Long Distance Call", "Sweet Little Angel", "Ooh Baby & Wrecking My Love Life", and "Spoonful". CD

Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". Ex/Superior Viaduct, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.98
The Ex have had an amazing career over their many decades in music – forays into jazz, improv, and even global sounds – but here, right at the start, they're much more in the spirit of political punk contemporaries from the UK – especially Gang Of Four and Crass – both of whom are a good comparison to the nonstop energy and razor-sharp sound of this debut album! Lyrics are all in English, and these guys are clearly using their unique spot in the Dutch scene to soar out and challenge some of the more powerful acts of the Anglo world – coming on strong with scratchy guitar, hard-rolling basslines, and drums that drive the lead lyrics over the top – on titles that include "A Sense Of Tumour", "Sucking Pig", "Outlook Army", "The Sky Is Blue Again", "Map", "Rules", "Squatsong", and "Warning Shot". Incredible contemporary Turkish psychedelia and hypnotic instrumental jams from Hayvanlar Alemi – a group that blends their region influences with a world of psychedelia and wordlessly anthemic possibilities for a sound all their own! Electric guitars drive of the group's sound – with excellent drums and percussion and bass filling out most the additional instrumentation – with stylophone on one song and some cool electric mandolin on a couple. But the guitars are amazing, with spindly, heavy lead and fuzzed out rhythms. Great stuff from the incomparable Sublime Frequencies. Titles include "Bahar Patlatan", "Mega Mambada". "Welcome To Sunny Australia", "Stamina", "Mavi Sepet", "Guarana Superpower", "Snakesurfing", "Akiskan Misafirler Iki", "Ineffable Dresscode". CD

The greatest moment ever from the legendary Bobbi Humphrey – a funky, soulful flute player who had more than her share of great moments over the years! This set may well be the summation of all the genius that Humphrey had to offer – a collaboration with genius producer Larry Mizell, at a level that matches is Blue Note classics with Donald Byrd, or the Music Is My Sanctuary album with Gary Bartz – a groundbreaking blend of jazz instrumentation and studio technique! The sound is never smooth, nor commercial – and instead, Bobbie's flute and vocals soar out majestically on these long tracks with building keyboard lines, subtle chorus parts, and touches of bass that really transform the rhythms past conventional soul fusion of the period. Every track is a winner – purely fantastic stuff – and classics include "Chicago Damn", "Jasper Country Man", and the genius "Harlem River Drive". CD

Jan & Dean at the height of their powers – hitting hard with a simple, no-nonsense sound that's completely sublime, and wonderfully compact – even though there's millions of LA musical forces going on in the background! The tunes are mostly driving little numbers that really push the vocals through the roof – those higher-than-high notes that the pair could hit together – making them maybe the third most powerful vocal force in 60s pop behind the Beach Boys and Four Seasons! Tunes are mostly car-themed – and include a few penned by Brian Wilson – a great lineup, without any filler at all. Titles include "Schlock Rod (parts 1 & 2)", "I Gotta Drive", "Surf Route 101", "Surfin Hearse", "Dead Man's Curve", and "Sting Ray". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic live performance from drummer Elvin Jones – done in 1971 as part of a John Coltrane Memorial Concert – and a record that maybe shows just how much Jones had grown as a leader in the few short years after Coltrane's death! The album features two long, very freewheeling tracks – "Shinjitu" and "Simone" – certainly inspired by the freedoms allowed by the Coltrane Quartet of the 60s, but taken in really dynamic directions that not only come from the drums of Elvin, but also the bold, rich work of Gene Perla on bass – as the pair really drive things from the bottom, really encouraging some great sounds from Chick Corea on piano, Frank Foster on tenor and soprano, and Joe Farrell on tenor and flute. A fantastic collection of work from Elizabeth King – a gospel singer who never reached the same sort of fame as singers who moved into the secular world – but one who's got a vocal power that would have made her a star, had she chosen such a move! The tunes here all feature King singing with tight small combo backing in a very rhythmic mode, and with strong support from a male backing group – who offer up this great call/response energy to Elizabeth's lead – which only seems to drive the music even further forward with its power! The tracks were all recorded in Memphis in 1972 – and titles include "Can't Do Nothing", "I Found Him", "This Man", "I'll Fly Way", "I Heard The Voice", "Stretch Out", and "Down Here Waiting". A beautiful debut from Ruth Koleva – a singer with roots in Bulgaria, but an ability to sing in a really universal style – a crisp take on 21st Century soul music that's bound to make her a real up-and-comer in the global soul underground! The album's got a perfect groove from start to finish – tight live instrumentation that's heavy on Fender Rhodes, served up with a focus that really serves Ruth's wonderful vocals – which have this floating, flowing quality that really matches the keyboards, but has more than enough power to drive home the English language lyrics too. And while we're not sure that Bulgaria's going to be the next hotbed of soul music, we've got great hopes for Ruth herself! Reel-y great grooves from Shawn Lee – perhaps his funkiest record in years, and one that has a definite cinematic feel too – as you might guess from the title! The style here is blacksploitation funk at its finest – stripped down to its best core elements, and served up by Lee with a lean, mean groove that shows that he really understands the roots of the genre – and knows how to get the sound just right – while still bringing in some of his own core touches too! As we've come to expect from Shawn, the beats are mighty nice – and the album's overflowing with breaks – plenty of funk to drive along the album's heavy keyboards and guitar riffs in the lead. A tremendous effort from Mourning A BLKstar – a group who may be on their way to being the voice of a generation – as they work with an unabashed sense of righteous politics, funk, and soul – all taken to a higher plane in the process of creation! Plenty of folks are message-oriented in recent years, but these guys go things one better by working with a form that's often as powerful as their message – music that finds its own structure around the lyrical needs of the tunes – which sometimes creates a deeper drama in the lyrics, sometimes imbues them with a richness of spirit that's beyond description! A landmark bit of indie funk from the 70s – one of the few records cut by Detroit keyboardist Eddie Russ, and easily the best! The album features Russ going to town on electric piano – working with a hip combo called The Mixed Bag, which features some wicked work on flute and soprano sax by Larry Nozero – and a vibe that's a lot more laidback than standard funk, or even more mainstream jazz funk too – a sweet open groove that's mighty nice all the way through! Elemental, 1983. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
We completely love the music of Woody Shaw – but unfortunately, the legendary trumpeter left this planet way too soon, and only gave us about 20 years of recordings! Fortunately, the vaults have yielded some gems like this over the years – unreleased live material that not only adds to the space in Woody's catalog, but also really shows us how special he could be in a live setting! Shaw's got this strength of imagination and inner spirituality that never falters at all, even when the tracks are stretching out nice and long – which they really do here, as almost all the numbers move way past the ten minute mark – and have Woody blowing magnificent solos throughout. The group is great, too, with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Tony Reedus on drums, and Stafford James on some especially crucial bass – an instrument that always seems to drive Shaw onto new heights when it's handled the right way, which it definitely is here. Elliot Smith's first solo album, recorded and released while his band Heatmiser was still going, but even at the time it was a clear sign that loner folk was his strongest medium. Roman Candle might be a little different lyrically than some of more heartbreakingly soul searching songwriting on Either/Or and more later on, in that the songs feel a little more like character studies than purely inward – but the sadness at the core is on full display – and it's up there with his best material. These are true home recordings, and truly sound right in that setting – and it includes the title track, "Condor Ave", "No Name #1" (and #s 2, 3 & 4), "Drive All Over Town" and "Kiwi Mad Dog 20/20". The most spiritual set we've heard so far from reedman Robert Stillman – a set hat's filled with slow-building tunes that provide a fantastic display for his saxophone solos! The record oddly has no credits, so we're not sure who's working with Stillman on the set – but the drummer is nicely loose, and really lets the lead saxophone solos chart the course – and there often appears to be other reeds in the lineup, although we're not sure if Stillman's overdubbing things himself! BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $34.99 36.99
An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. RCA/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There were plenty of prog groups with a strong classical influence, but Continuum maybe wear that influence on their sleeve more than most – given that the whole first half of the record features really jamming interpretations of classical themes, before the group deliver a suite of their own on side two – billed as "a ritualistic invocation"! Don't let the "classical" put you off, though – as these guys are hardly academic or staid, and really open up in a lineup that includes guitar, harmonica, recorder, and saxes from Yoel Schwarcz, next to some great organ from Tim Rice – both great players who get plenty of bass and drums to drive them forward strongly! Side two features the group's own beautiful "Autumn Grass", which runs for over 26 minutes – and the whole album's instrumental, and features the other tracks "Byrd Pavan", "Vivaldi Synthesis Two", and "Overdraft". Pure early genius from Alice Cooper – a set that might not have been as big of a hit as some of his other early 70s albums, but which also shows the singer to be very much at the top of his game! Some of the tracks here follow familiar Cooper territory – sinister, hard-rocking energy with a no-nonsense approach – but there's also some deeper elements handled nicely by Bob Ezrin – with qualities that now feel years ahead of their time, and maybe even an influence to later folks who never would have admitted such a link! Titles include the fantastic "Halo Of Flies" – plus "Under My Wheels", "Be My Lover", "You Drive Me Nervous", "Yeah Yeah Yeah", "Dead Babies", and "Killer". LP, Vinyl record album

A wicked reinvention of the sound of Bo Diddley – a set that electrifies his groove even more than before – and takes him into the same mix of funk and blues that Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf were exploring at the time! This album's right up there with the two Cadet/Chess classics by both of those artists – and is possibly even more messed-up too – with lots of jagged edges that push past the usual Bo Diddley groove – even though that classic sense of rhythm is still at the core to drive things along! We don't know who's playing drums, but they've got a nice heavy handed approach that makes these tracks really boom – and the set's in a massively funky style that's taken far too many years to be acknowledged for in the mainstream! Lots of nice ones, including "Shut Up Woman", "Funky Fly", "Power House", "Black Soul", "Elephant Man", and "I've Got A Feeling". LP, Vinyl record album

There's vocals on the record, but the guitar and rhythms are what really drive the train – especially in some places as the vocals almost feel like exclamatory passages in response to the sharpness of the instrumentation! Things move pretty darn quickly on most cuts – which makes the guitar work even more amazing, especially in comparison to conventional highlife – on titles that include "Abrubo", "Acheumpomaa", "Ohere A Oda Apakaw Mu", and "Aboagyewaa". CD

An amazing record – quite possibly one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, and a session that has Charles Mingus stepping boldly forward in a whole new direction! The album shakes loose the sometimes too-academic modern tones of Mingus albums from the previous year or two – and unleashes the bold, raw emotion that would drive him firmly into the 60s – a new sense of freedom in music, filled with poetry, anger, joy, and life! The tracks are all quite long – and played by a sharp quintet with Mingus on bass, Jackie McLean on alto sax, JR Monterose on tenor, Mal Waldron on piano, and Willie Jones on drums. Titles include "Pithecantrhopus Erectus", "A Foggy Day", "Love Chant", and "Profile of Jackie". The whole thing bubbles over with an anger and intensity that you hardly find in other Mingus albums, and if you've ever heard a weak Mingus album, and wondered what all the fuss was about, you owe it to yourself to own this one! Fantastic sounds from Stereolab – an assortment of rare singles and other unusual recordings that were mostly issued on their own Duophonic label, and which are far more obscure than their bigger label albums during the same period! Even though Stereolab gave the world some undeniable classics in the late 90s and early 00s, they were also working endlessly, and seemed to record more than they could ever fit on a full length set – which resulted in all the cool singles, limited releases, and other material included here – not dusty tapes pulled from the archives, but beautiful work that often returns the group to all the space age charms of their first few records! ECM (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title's no mistake, as the album was really one of Mal Waldron's first really outside sessions – a real embrace of the free jazz modes coming out of the European scene of the 60s, but in a way that's slightly different than most! As Waldron states in the liner notes, his vision here is free, but not total chaos – an approach to music that's much more unfettered than before, yet still somewhat rhythmically structured – so that the tunes themselves roll out with a great deal of drive and energy, almost modal at points, but a bit fuller overall. The rhythm section here is a great part of the success of the album – with Clarence Becton on drums and the amazing Isla Eckinger on bass – a player whose pulsating approach is a perfect foil for Waldron's bold work on piano. There's actually a surprising amount of groove-driven numbers here – hardly the free jazz of the FMP scene, and more in the mode of some of the most unfettered expressions going down at MPS at the time. Titles include "Rat Now", "Balladina", "1 3 234", "Rock My Soul", and "Boo". Yet the depth of this volume really matches Ware's more famous character Jimmy Corrigan – as the long narratives here trace out the "origins" of Rusty, and follow him through years past – with a sensitivity and lingering sadness that's beautifully delineated in the kind of artwork that sets Ware apart from anyone else we can think of. The production quality is beautiful – hundreds of pages in full color, laid out sideways to replicate a book of vintage comic strips – which furthers the Ware exploration of the Rusty Brown aesthetic. One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Maybe the hippest album we've ever heard from The Dining Rooms – something we probably could have guessed from their evocation of Sun Ra in the title! And while that title seems a bit obtuse – maybe even a joke – the music here is right on the money, and some of the most serious, most spiritual the group has ever given us – quite far from some of the easier dance-styled sounds we know from their early years. There's still a lot of samples and electronics in the mix, but they're used in extremely thoughtful ways – and often sourced with more interesting material, too – so that there's a core of 70s cosmic jazz and fusion that seems to drive the record, which also comes through in the group's own keyboards as well. The approach isn't entirely jazz, but not far off at times – and titles include "Interstellar", "Light Time Tales", "Marte"," Love Story", "Saturno", "Devil's Moon", "Once Were Warriors", and "Sergio Leone Asteroid". ✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreNew York Concerts – The Jimmy Giuffre 3 & 4 (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Anagram, 1965. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Amazing music from Jimmy Giuffre – and a much-needed document of this under-recorded time in his career! The 2CD set brings together two different live performances – each done two years after his groundbreaking Free Fall album for Columbia, and with a sound that's even more far-reaching than that classic set! The Giuffre heard here is extremely free on his reeds – especially clarinet, which is blown at a level that prefaces countless European free jazz work to come – with an incredible range of sounds, colors, and tones. Giuffre also plays tenor – with more bite and soul than ever before – almost at an ESP sort of level – and the accompaniment on both sessions is very loose and free, too – with Joe Chambers on drums on both concerts – working with Richard Davis on bass on a trio set, and with a quartet that includes Don Friedman on piano and Barre Phillips on bass. The whole thing is mindblowing – a chapter of this amazing musician's career that demands to be heard – and stands as even more of a revelation than other Giuffre releases in recent years. Titles include "Cry Want", "Syncopate", "Drive", "Angles", "Quadrangle", "Crossroads", and "Three Bars In One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobbi HumphreyBlacks & Blues (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chris McCarthyStill Time To Quit ... LP
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Chris McCarthy's the pianist in the group, and also the composer of all the tunes on the set – but the record gets some equally strong drive from the frontline work of Takuya Kuroda on trumpet and Michael Blake on tenor! Chris' tunes seem to fuse together Kuroda and Blake with this really bold energy at the start of every song – before the artists each take off on solos of their own, matched with McCarthy's energy on piano – which is often this very vibrant array of notes that come in streams and clusters! The rest of the group features the round, solid bass of Sam Minaie and the effortless romping drums of JK Kim – on titles that include "Shockingly Effective", "That's All You Get", "Ready Steady Here You Go", "Toasty", and "Happy Tired". ✨✧ Charles MingusPithecanthropus Erectus (180 gram Japanese pressing) ... LP
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
We promise that it will never ever let you down. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nino Nardini/Eddie Warner/Roger RogerStudio Ganaro – Space Oddities 1972 to 1982 (with download) ... LP
Born Bad (France), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mad electronic sounds from a trio of older French studio talents – Nino Nardini, Eddie Warner, and Roger Roger – all sound library giants from a previous generation, working here in some sweet electric modes for the 70s! If there's one thing that seemed to mark the best sound library artists working in the European scene, it was a really forward-thinking style of work – an ambitious drive to always find new sounds, and new ways of expressing themselves – which led cats like Nardini, Warner, and Roger to move beyond previous jazz or string-based modes, and step into the world of the Moog, Arp, and other electronic sources of the 70s! This sweet collection brings together some of their best experiments from Studio Ganaro – tunes that are often every bit as charming and melodic as their 60s material, but also occasionally funky, too – with a groove that's totally great, and use of the new keyboard sounds at a level that's very tuneful, and way more than just knob-twiddling. Titles include "Pop Electronique No 2", "Devil's Anvil", "Tomorrow", "Minor Mind", "Pathetic Motion", "Expectation", "Frantique", "Poppy Chimes", "Beyond The Clouds", "Sound Industrial No 15", "Brutus Drums", "Tickling Shuffle", and "KO". ✨✧ Perez Prado with Don AlfioLove Child ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Whoa! Funky work from Afro Cuban percussionist and bandleader Pantaleon Perez Prado – sharing credit with singer Don Alfio – with a surprising wealth of spacey funk in the mix! Before your mind is rendered full- blown by this obscure, funky record, we need to let you know that Pantaleon is not the Perez Prado of "King Of Mambo" fame, but his younger brother – and while the billing is the result of some commercial sleight-of-hand at the time, there's no faking the funky Latin mastery of the recordings – it's genuinely strong stuff! The funkiest numbers have nice and raw vocals by Don Alfio – sung in English, and complete with gritty soul grunts – on cuts that feel like a Latin-ized takes on JB, Sly Stone and others in the funk canon. The instrumental tracks have a more varied approach, with lots of searing psych soul touches to the guitars and horns. Very cool! Titles include "Love Child", "Bahia", "Chato", "Smack", "Imperfect", "Reaction", "Free Time", "Chicago Banana", "Carmen", "Circle" and "Drive Car". CD

Pugh's Place may never have hit our shores in a big way back in the 70s – but damn, these Dutch boys are one hell of a group – and really have a quality that meets or beats some of the best Brit groups of the time! Their style is sometimes hard rock, sometimes prog, and unabashedly holds on to a few psych elements from time to time – in a way that makes this record a roller-coaster ride of a set – with lots of heavy drums, searing guitar, burning organ, and some surprisingly great moments on flute and vibes as well! Titles include a wonderfully wild remake of "Drive My Car" – plus the originals "The Prisoner", "Lady Power", "Secret", "Give Me Good Music", and "Old Pirate John". LP, Vinyl record album

Astral Spirits, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two fantastic improvisations from the Chicago scene – both featuring the well-known talents of Dave Rempis on saxes and Tim Daisy on drums – plus the rising genius of Matt Piet on piano! Piet's a name we've only begun to pay attention to – but his bold sense of freedom here really seems to drive the proceedings on even more strongly than we might have guessed – with an urgency that really sets Rempis on fire, who then seems to do the same to the trio – while Daisy balanced beautifully between more sensitive percussion and a full-on attack of the drum kit. Titles include "To Play Is The Thing" and "The Thousand Natural Shocks". CD
