Pieces Of A DreamPieces Of A Dream ... CD
Elektra, 1981. Used ... $18.99
The debut of a genius group that would forever transform the sound of electric jazz in the 80s – and a brilliant set that few others could match at the time! Pieces Of A Dream first snuck onto the scene with a sound that was refreshingly subtle at the time – almost a back-to-basics approach to electric jazz, and one that got past some of the excesses and more dancefloor-oriented styles that hit a lot of fusion at the end of the 70s. The approach here is often quite light – still soulful and rhythmic, but mostly with a gentle focus on the group's keyboards by James Lloyd, which really set the scene wonderfully for the flowing mellow soul style of the record. The jazz component of the work is still relatively strong, too – even on the tunes that feature vocals by singer Barbara Walker – a great fit for the group's sound on the cuts "Warm Weather" and "Lovers". Other titles include "Body Magic", "Touch Me In the Spring", "Steady Glide", and the classic "Pieces Of A Dream". CD

Tangerine DreamOfficial Bootleg Series Vol 1 – Reims Cathedral, December 1974/Mozarthalle, Mannheim October 1976 (4CD set) ... CD
Reactive (UK), 1974/1976. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99
Tangerine Dream at their spacey 70s best – working here on two extended live performances that have a very trippy vibe! The work almost feels improvised at times – not in a noisy way, but very stretched out and open-ended – as there's not really any individual songs from the group, just these very extended passages of electronics that build and shift in really beautiful ways – that core essence of the group that was in its prime flower here! The package features four discs, with no individual tracks listed – two different performances recorded in Reims Cathedral in 1974, with fantastic spacey echo – and one long concert from Mannheim in 1976, with parts one and two of the set, and then two shorter "encore" tracks too. Box also includes a booklet and poster too! CD

Tangerine DreamOfficial Bootleg Series Vol 3 – Ford Auditorium, Detroit March 1977/Regent Theatre, Sydney February 1982 (4CD set) ... CD
Reactive (UK), 1977/1982. New Copy 4CD ... $23.99
Great live work from Tangerine Dream – a group who, by the midpoint of their career, arguably sounded even better in a concert setting than they did in the studio – often working with a stronger sense of darkness that hearkens back to their roots, with a mix of electronic elements that sound downright spooky in the larger space of a concert hall! Given the light shows pictured in the package, it must have been something to catch these guys in concert – as there's all sorts of odd corners and unusual inflections in the music, which would only have been even more mind-altering if your eyes were getting it at the same time. As with previous volumes, this set brings together two full shows – the first a performance in Detroit in 1977, with titles that include "Face Of The Earth", "Signals From Above", "Conjuration", "Patterns In The Ivy", "Cherokee Lane", "The Emerald Beyond", and "Moonlight" – the second done in Sydney in 1982, with the titles "Convention Of The 24", "White Eagle", "Ayers Majestic", "Logos", "Bondi Parade", "Mojave Plan", "Thermal Inversion", and "Midnight In Tula". ✨✧ Dream WarriorsAnd Now The Legacy Begins ... CD
4th & Broadway, 1990. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The standout LP from The Dream Warriors – a quirky hip hop group who first sprung onto the scene in the wake of De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest. The duo were Canadian, and had a style that was a bit more open-ended than others – with room for odd samples and a keen sense of humor. Both of these are displayed well in the album's classic track "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style" – a pretty great number that sampled heavily from Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova", many years before the track became better known as the theme from Austin Powers. Other tracks include "Follow Me Not", "Ludi", "Tune From the Missing Channel", and "Wash Your Face in My Sink". " CD

✨✧ Pieces Of A DreamImagine This ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1983. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A smooth jazzy classic from Pieces Of A Dream – and a real standout from the early 80s scene! The core trio of Curtis Harmon on drums, James Lloyd on keys, and Cedric Napoleon on bass are produced by Grover Washington with a fuller feel than usual – taking the piano trio approach of earlier jazz years, and updating it nicely for the 80s groove sound! Washington plays a bit of sax on the set, but the main groove is still from the keys in the trio – sounding especially sweet on the album's wonderful version of Herbie Hancock's "Tell Me A Bedtime Story"! Other titles include "Imagine This", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "It's Time For Love", "Fo Fi Fo", and "It's Getting Hot In Here". CD

Manhattan, 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mid 80s hit for Pieces of a dream – moving here a lot farther from their roots as a smooth fusion soul ensemble. The album's got production by Lenny White and Maurice White – both of them working in the more electronic style that infused their own soul work as the 80s progressed. The style's not a bad one for the group, but we have to admit that we miss the warm soul of earlier albums. Titles include "Say La La", "Outside In", "Winning Streak", "Sunshine", "Joy Ride", and "I Can Give You What You Want". CD

Virgin/EMI (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Seven full albums from Tangerine Dream, all served up in a single set, with bonus tracks too – all as a wonderful document of this second chapter of their career! During these years, Tangerine Dream had moved from the Krautrock underground to the spotlight of a new electronic music generation – as pioneers who opened the doors for many, and were still able to stay ahead of the game – thanks in part to growing exposure on the soundtrack scene! Most of these records still have the group working in their strong longform mode – with very extended tracks – and two albums, Logos and Encore, are both live albums that show that the group were every bit as compelling on stage as they were in the studio. ✨✧ Tangerine DreamPink Years Albums (Electronic Meditation/Alpha Centauri/Zeit/Atem) (4CD set) ... CD
Ohr/Reactive (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
For great albums from Tangerine Dream – each packaged here in tiny LP sleeves, with a small poster too! Electronic Meditation has a title that's a perfect summation of the way that Tangerine Dream approached their music – and it also really describes what made them so unique at the time! Rather than try to push the boundaries of electronics with a sense of force or urgency, the trio of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze, and Conrad Schnitzler really take their time – working inside an abandoned factory to create the sounds for this initial debut – acting as their own producers, too – really starting the strong legacy of German experimental recordings of the 70s, in which the studio was as important as the instruments themselves! Given that Schulze would later work in Ash Ra Tempel and on his own famous records – and Schnitzler soon formed Kluster – there's a lot of genesis going on here. But the whole thing's also pretty darn great on its own, even without the history – and has a much darker edge than some later work by Tangerine Dream. Titles include "Genesis", "Journey Through A Burning Brain", "Resurrection", "Ashes To Ashes", and "Cold Smoke". Alpha Centauri is pure genius from Tangerine Dream – a record that came out right at the start of the 70s, and immediately cemented the group's reputation as one of the most inventive electronic acts of the decade! The tracks are long and spacious here – very much in the territory of some of the group's Krautrock contemporaries, but with more of a sense of openness, and patience – as they never rush things at all, while layering together their unique blends of guitar, organ, percussion, flute, and anything else they can think of – even a coffee machine! Chris Franke handles the electronics, but Steve Schroyder abstracts them with "several echo machines" – while Edgar Froese helps them all remember to keep things tuneful at times. Tracks include "Sunrise In The Third System", "Fly & Collision Off Comas Sola", and the side-long "Alpha Centauri". Zeit is one of the moodiest early albums from Tangerine Dream – a record that really lives up to the eclipse on the cover! There's maybe more "bottom" here than some of their other work – swirling shadows that resonate with some of the more isolated sounds – almost as if the group is trying to invent the 4AD production style, years ahead of its time! Titles include "Birth Of The Liquide Plejades", "Nebulous Dawn", "Origin Of Supernatural Probabilities", and "Zeit". Atem has long tracks that maybe bring a stronger current of noise to the music of Tangerine Dream – a set that follows the longer abstractions of the Zeit album, but with even weirder elements too! The sound isn't exactly pre-industrial, but also isn't far off either – and titles include "Atem", "Fauna Geni", "Circulation Of Events", and "Wahn". CD

Susan Alcorn/Joe McPhee/Ken VandermarkInvitation To A Dream ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD

Jon BatisteChronology Of A Dream – Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Jon Batiste is fantastic here – way more so than we normally give him credit for, and maybe even sharper in a live setting than in the studio! The group works with a mix of jazz, funk, and soul – but very different than Jon's band on TV, as there's deeper, richer elements going on – both in the general colors of the instruments, and in the way that the solos soar out and really give the songs some emotion. The lineup features tenor, alto, trumpet, and lots of nice bottom currents on the rhythms – sometimes funky, sometimes more lyrical – all topped with great piano lines from Batiste, who also sings a bit too. Much of the phrasing and flavor is more modern than some of his other albums – and titles include "Blacck", "Prince", "Pwwr", "Birthe", "Kenner", "Story", "Ordr", and "Higher". Society Hill, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
New work from a revived version of Blue Magic – that legendary 70s group who were one of the best on the Philly scene of the time – still sounding great here in a more contemporary set! The album's headed up by producer Butch Ingram – with backing by the whole Ingram Family – and like some of the recent Ingram projects on Society Hill, the record does a great job of both going back into deep Philly soul roots, and adding a few slight contemporary touches – never too many to ruin the old school modes, but just the right dash to keep the record from sounding like a copycat of the old days. Tunes include new material penned by the Ingrams and Barbara Mason – and titles include "I Can Show You Love", "I Can Want You", "I've Got My Heart Set On You", "Hurting", "Your Spell Stayed On My Mind", "On A Crowded Street", and "Seasons For Love". Bobby BradfordLove's Dream (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Emanem (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Seminal sounds from cornet player Bobby Bradford – a date recorded in the UK in the early 70s, but with all the free-thinking and imaginative energy as his best sessions in LA! The group pits Bobby's horn against three young modernists – Trevor Watts on alto and soprano sax, Kent Carter on bass, and John Stevens on drums – all working in these long-flowing, very rhythmic numbers that lie somewhere between Bradford's work with John Carter, and the early 60s sound of Ornette Coleman. The alto/cornet interplay is especially nice – very mesmerizing over the course of the album's very long tracks – and Watts turns out to be a great musical partner for Bobby. Titles include "Love's Dream", "Coming On", and "Roswita's Dance". CD features bonus tracks ""She", "HM Louis 1", and an alternate take of "Coming On". CD

One of the best solos singles by Johnny Bristol! "Love Takes Tears" is an excellent mellow soul number – built around a groove that's almost like "Love's Theme" by Barry White, but graced with warm vocals by Johnny that give the tune a very catchy hook! "Go On & Dream" is mellower, a great example of the gentle side of Bristol! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Fantastic material from Tim Buckley – rare tracks recorded in 1968 and 1973, both presenting two different slices of his too-short career – and standing together as a great addition to his too-small catalog of recorded work! The first half features small sessions from 1968 – with Tim on those amazing vocals of his and Lee Underwood on lead guitar – plus a bit of vibes from Dave Friedman, in a manner that echoes the great use of that instrument on his Elektra albums of the late 60s. The songs are dreamy, open, and have that sublime blend of blueness and flow that really set Tim apart from his contemporaries – titles that include "Danang", "Happy Time", "Buzzin Fly", "Song To The Siren", and "Ashbury Park" – all done in unusual versions. The second half of the record features material recorded in 1973 – songs that are a bit more tight, with more of an overall group feel – almost jamming in the way the whole thing comes together! 1973 titles include versions of "Honey Man", "Falling Timber", "Quicksand", "Stone In Love", "Sefronia", "Because Of You", and "The Dream Belongs To Me". Solomon BurkeI Have A Dream ... LP
ABC, 1974. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Surprisingly nice work! Like the rest of Solomon's post-Atlantic LPs, this one has a sound that's different than his classic work, but which also exposes a whole new side of his talent, and range of vocals that didn't always show up for Atlantic. Solomon arranged and produced here, and the sound is mellow and a bit modern, but still with excellent southern soul touches. Most of the tracks are new, and are dedications to Martin Luther King Jr., who was the inspiration for the album. The stuff's a lot more political than most of Solomon's work, as you might guess by titles like "I Have A Dream", "Now Is The Time", "Social Change", and "Mountain Top". LP, Vinyl record album

Very bracing work from this sharp British trio – one that features free improvisation between the bass of John Edwards, percussion of Mark Sanders, and tenor and soprano sax of the great John Butcher! Butcher always seems to be at his best in a spare setting like this – especially when Edwards is on the date – and the range of sounds and sonic expression is amazing – not just from the always-inventive reed work of the saxophonist, but also from the varied percussion and styles of playing from Sanders – who has a way of really unsettling us with his sounds at times, in a way that makes it very hard to tie his performance to any sort of organic referent. Amazing! This album is one of the great lost classics of East Coast harmony soul of the 70s – and it always leaves us breathless! Continental 4 may not have been as big as some of their contemporaries, but the cut "(You're Living In) A Dream World" is one of the most sublime soul tracks ever recorded – with stunning harmonies, fragile production, and some wonderful Philly ballad instrumental touches. The rest of the album is just as good – with slowly plucked electric sitar, soaring harmonies, and an amazing batch of orchestrations that are just out of this world! A fantastic debut from Kizzy Crawford – a soul singer who will most likely be huge in years to come – thanks to an approach that seems to effortlessly cross borders and boundaries! Kizzy's lyrics are personal, but positive – and the music is a blend of soul instrumentation with acoustic elements – at a level that makes it clear that Crawford's not just trying to be another neo soul diva, or retro soul vocalist – but instead is really ready to address the world with a sound that's all her own! Songs are all original, and instrumentation changes up with a nice sense of variety, but without ever making us think that Kizzy can't make up her mind – on titles that include "Golden Brown", "Progression", "Dive", "Real Love", "The Way I Dream", "Waiting Game", and "Adlewyrchu Arnaf". Epic, 1982. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Solid 80s grooving from George Duke – a really tightly-crafted set, done in the sweet mix of jazz and soul that he virtually helped to invent during the 70s! There's a gentle soulfulness to the record that we really like – a quality that's surprising, given the date, and the fact that so many artist like Duke were really pushing things over the top at the time – while George could still lay back, and keep things very nicely paced. Many of the tunes on the set are mellow groovers and ballads – stepping along at a sweet pace with lead vocals from Duke, and some larger backings conducted by Charles Veal. Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. Used ... $18.99
A well-titled album from Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui – one that's got a warm sense of flow that takes it well past conventional piano trio work! The group here features Fukui on piano, Satoshi Denpo on bass, and Yoshinori Fukui on drums – all working together beautifully as a unit – with a vibe set fire by Ryo's work on the keys, and a sense of imagination that makes even familiar tunes sound completely fresh. The whole thing's in the best Japanese piano tradition of the 70s – that wonderful new territory explored by key pianists like Fukui – with a sound that's open and free, but never avant either. Titles include "Mellow Dream", "Baron Potato Blues", "Horizon", "What's New", and "My Funny Valentine". CD reissue adds "Early Summer 2006 at Slow boat". CD
(Out of print, 2006 pressing with bonus track – part of the Shibuya Jazz Classics reissue series!)

Yoshiko GotoDay Dream ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... About December 10, 2020
A very dark set of vocals from Japanese singer Yoshiko Goto – quite different than most of the more standard jazz sessions of the 70s, and one that's recorded with a great sense of space and presence! Many of the numbers here follow the Three Blind Mice mode of instrumentation – using the elements sparingly and often in groupings that are less traditional than usual. Although the group here features alto sax, piano, bass, and drums – they don't always move together at once, leaving lots of space for Yoshiko's vocals to slide out with a moody and sad-tinged feel. Titles include "Angel Eyes", "I Got It Bad", "Jesse", "Everytime We Say Goodbye", and "Day Dream". CD

Another single off Groove Theory's stellar debut, that introduced the world to Amel Larrieux, as a lead vocalist at least. Crisp hip hop influenced beats with a nice laidback vibe. The "Go Go" mix isn't actually Go Go, just another nice downtempo version, and the "Dream Sequence" makes more of a nod towards Acid Jazz, but the "Wet" mix is our favorite, smooth and spare. 12-inch, Vinyl record

KaleidoscopeFurther Reflections – The Complete Recordings 1967 to 1969 (Tangerine Dream/Faintly Blowing/bonus tracks) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Amazing sounds from Kaleidoscope – a wonderful UK psych group from the 60s, not to be confused with the American group of the same name! The sound here is wonderfully fresh – modes that are not unfamiliar from the period, but put together by the group with a great sense of spontaneity – a sort of energy that almost makes you feel like they were discovering all the best aspects of the music while recording the records – a quality that really makes this set stand out from other psych work of the time. There's some occasional gentle moments that almost bring in a Sunshine Pop feel to the music – but never in a poppy or commercial way, and more in the kind of thoughtful balance that you'd find on the first album by Millenium. CD features two full albums – Tangerine Dream and Faintly Blowing – plus bonus tracks from singles too. Titles include "Dear Nellie Goodrich", "Holiday Maker", "Snapdragon", "Poem", "Faintly Blowing", "Please Excuse My Face", "Just How Much You Are", "Jenny Artichoke", and "Balloon". CD

Charles LloydDream Weaver (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used ... $14.99
A classic set from reedman Charles Lloyd – a set that really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. Even though leading the group on tenor and flute, Lloyd's got a real sense of rhythm to his playing – echoes of the Hamilton group – but set loose with a stellar quartet of younger players – including Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all perfect choices for inventive music like this! The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". ✨✧ Thelonious MonkMonk's Dream (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1963. Used ... $4.99
The first Thelonious Monk album for Columbia Records – and one of the best, as well – a beautiful illustration of the way that his shift in labels really set some new fire to his music in the early 60s! The group is Monk's sharp-edged quartet with the amazing Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums – a group that's beautifully understated, but able to do incredible things in the company of the pianist – hanging back to let Thelonious take center stage one minute, then swinging hard together the next. The set includes great renditions of Monk classics that really illustrate his new energy at Columbia – and titles include "Bolivar Blues", "Bye-Ya", and "Monk's Dream" – plus great remakes of "Body & Soul" and "Just A Gigolo". CD features 4 bonus tracks – all alternate takes from the album, 3 of which are previously unissued! CD

✨✧ Kris NeedsSuicide – Dream Baby Dream – A New York Story (hardcover) ... Book
Omnibus, 2017. New Copy ... $5.99 30.00
A fantastically detailed story of the life and music of Suicide – a duo who gave the world just a small amount of music, but changed it forever with their work! Both Martin Rev and Alan Vega worked heavily with the author on the volume – which paints a very rich picture of the world from which they sprang, and the many years in the New York underground that led to the striking sounds of the first classic Suicide album. There's a huge amount of things in here we never knew before – Rev studied with Tony Williams and Lenny Tristano, for example – and the book is as much a story of the vibrancy of downtown New York in the 70s, as it is the story of Suicide and their music. 327 pages, hardcover, with some images. Oliver NelsonKennedy Dream – A Musical Tribute To John F Kennedy ... LP
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $11.99
A great little album – a lot better than you might think from the concept! After the death of JFK, Oliver Nelson penned this extremely strong tribute to the man – featuring snippets of speeches made by Kennedy during his time in office as president, used as bridges between jazz based backings by Nelson that are filled with some of his strongest writing of the time. The notes are more devoted to Kennedy's memory and Nelson's genius than the usual liner notes – so we're not sure who the players are – but the overall style is right up there with some of Nelson's best serious work from the time, and features a striking use of strings against jazz solo instrumentation, almost in a manner that recalls Ralph Burns' best styles of the 50s. Titles include "The Artists Rightful Place", "Jacqueline", "Day In Dallas", "Let The Word Go Forth", and "John Kennedy Memory Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Bossa versions of American jazz standards – done by Japanese singer Lisa Ono with arrangements by Oscar Castro Neves, sung in English. Whew, that's a mouthful – but the album's a nice one, and it's one of Lisa's more expensive Japanese-only recordings that have finally been released in Brazil. The album does a great job of showing the influence of American composers on Brazilian styles – as you'll hear on tunes like "Undecided", "Tea for Two", "In the Mood", "Night & Day", and "As Time Goes By" – and the album also features one original tune, "Angel's Eyes", which Lisa wrote with singer Monday Michiru! Chris Potter OrchestraDreamer Is The Dream ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2017. Used ... $12.99
A record with an evocative title, and one that seems to bring out an even more evocative sound than usual from reedman Chris Potter – who not only blows tenor and soprano sax, but also bass clarinet, ilimba, and flute, as well as adding in some electronics too! Yet these other elements are never gimmicky at all – and the presentation of the music is warmly organic – partly because the other members of the trio give all of Potter's actions a great grounding – with David Virelles on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Marcus Gilmore on drums and percussion. Potter's sharper tone nicely cuts through any moments that might veer towards ECM atmospherics – and titles include "Heart In Hand", "Ilimba", "Yasodhara", "Sonic Anomaly", and "Memory & Desire". CD

Vanessa RubinDream Is You – Vanessa Rubin Sings Tadd Dameron ... CD
Nibur, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
One of the best albums in years from jazz singer Vanessa Rubin – a very hip set dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron, which makes for a collection of tunes that go way past the usual! Plus, in addition to a great set of songs, the album also features direction from Cecil Bridgewater – and arrangements by Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Frank Foster, and Benny Golson – really giving things a soulful swing that's just right for Vanessa's vocals! The whole thing's got all the best charm of her early work, but maybe an even hipper edge – and players include Eddie Allen on trumpet, Clifton Anderson on trombone, Patience Higgins on tenor, Bruce Williams on alto, John Cowherd on piano, and Carl Allen on drums. Many tracks are nice along, with room enough for instrumental solos too – and titles include "Kitchenette Across The Hall", "Ladybird", "Whatever Possessed Me", "I Think I'll Go Away", "Weekend", "On A Misty Night", and "Good Bait".
