✨✧ Little DragonNabuma Rubberband ... CD
Universal Republic, 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dreamy, soul-steeped avant pop sounds from Sweden's Little Dragon! The group has been delivering with atmospheric production, high quality songs, and timeless, genuine soul for long enough that we could consider them veterans by this point – and we're glad they continue to do their thing with fresh, distinctive style. Singer Yukimi Nagano is a big part of the appeal, and she really flourishes on this one – infusing the synth pop styled tracks and the more subtle mood pieces with an indispensable soulful integrity. Includes "Klapp Klapp", "Mirror", "Pretty Girls", "Underbart", "Car Rider", "Paris", "Lurad", "Nabuma Rubberband", "Only One", "Killing Me", "Pink Cloud" and "Let Go". CD

Osamu KitajimaDragon King ... CD
Everland (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A great record from Osamu Kitajima – one of his most soulful ever! The record features some additional production and arrangements by Richard Evans – who takes Osamu's Japanese fusion style, and gives it a sparkling modern soul groove that's perfect for US audiences. In fact, Osamu's frequent use of eastern instrumentation – koto, biwa, and other instruments – works perfectly with the flair for the exotic that Evans always had during his years at Cadet. Includes the smooth stepper "Say You Will" with vocals by Phil Perry and Rena Scott – plus the tracks "Yamame", "Dragon King", "Willow Pattern", and "Share My Love". CD

✨✧ Tee & CompanyDragon Garden ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sounds beyond compare – one of those really special 70s sessions from the Japanese Three Blind Mice label – put together in a way that almost seems to be a genre unto itself! The group here have a keen understanding of advances in free jazz and fusion, but work with a deeper spiritual undercurrent and a great sense of sound (shaped by producer Takashi "Tee" Fujii) – so that their individual instrumental elements flow together in rich new ways that are sometimes subtle, sometimes quite righteous! The lineup shifts a bit from track to track – and the set features xcellent work on flute and bass clarinet from Kenji Mori, electric piano from Masaru Imada, tenor from Takao Uematsu, and bass and cello from Nobuyoshi Ino. Titles include "End Of November", "Mort", "Our Foolish", and "Dragon Garden". CD

Miles Davis with John Coltrane & Sonny StittIn Stockholm 1960 Complete (4CD set) ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1960. New Copy 4CD ... $28.99 29.99
The complete recordings of a legendary live cycle of shows in Stockholm from 1960 – material that was previously issued on two different 2LP sets during the album era, now brought together here with bonus tracks too! The first third of the set features incredible work from the team of Miles Davis and John Coltrane – working together in space that's very open, and far more exploratory than their studio work of the late 50s – maybe at a level that really shows the impact that Coltrane's growth was having on the solo approach of Davis! The key rhythm trio keeps things swinging – Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – which almost seems to allow the horn players even more freedom. The second two thirds of the set are equally striking, but in a very different way – as they feature the great Sonny Stitt, blowing both alto and tenor with Miles' group – a choice that's maybe a bit surprising, but equally wonderful too – a Stitt brings the sound maybe back to a bop core, but also seems to really get a chance to show off some of those modern currents that he had to soft-pedal on his albums for Roost. Titles with Coltrane include "So What", "On Green Dolphin Street", "All Blues/Theme", "Walkin/Theme", and "Fran Dance" – and titles with Stitt include "Autumn Leaves/Theme", "Walkin", "All Of You", "June Night", "Stardust", "Lover Man", "If I Were A Bell", "No Blues/Theme", "Softly As In A Mornin Sunrise", and "So What". Berndt EgerbladhSchizo ... CD
Swedisk/Dragon (Sweden), 1964. Used ... $9.99
Really wonderful early work from pianist Berndt Egerbladh – a player who's gotten a lot more global attention in recent years, but who sounds especially great on this rare date from the 60s! The album's a masterful showcase for Berndt's warm, fluid approach on the keys of the piano – a style that's really quite unique for the time, and a very strong precursor to modes that wouldn't show up that strongly on other scenes until the following decade. There's a really mature sound to the record, but one that never tries to hard to be "new", nor pushes its own sense of specialness too strongly. Instead, Berndt manages to stretch out spaciously, but in an understated way – a beautiful balance of color and sound that gives the record a really timeless quality. Bass is by Bjorn Alke, drums by Sten Oberg – and titles include "Mister Idrees", "Eva", "Sarek", "Monique", "Schizo", and "Days Of Wine & Roses". CD

Dragon (Sweden), 1964. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Never-issued music from a really legendary group – titled in a way that's similar to their famous 60s record for Atlantic Records – but a batch of live material recorded in Sweden with an equally sublime sort of feel! Art Farmer works here on flugelhorn alongside guitarist Jim Hall – a brief but important pairing in 60s modern jazz – especially when combined with the talents of Steve Swallow on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – four artists who make for a really revolutionary quartet, as they explore the space of sound, and the space between the notes, in ways that still sound as revolutionary now as they did when recorded back in 1964! Titles include "Theme For Jobim", "Sometime Ago", "Waltz Hot", "Birk's Works", "I Love You", and "Bilbao Song". CD

Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 1 – With Chet Baker – 1955/1956 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The first entry in this wonderful series that documents the early genius of baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin – a player on the Swedish scene of the postwar years, but one who also got plenty of attention on our shores – thanks to key issues of his records by Emarcy/Mercury in the 50s! Lars has a wonderful tone on his instrument – and is one of a handful of players in his generation who were taking the instrument away from larger ensembles, and using it as a setting for sublime solo work in small groups – a quality that puts Gullin right alongside American greats of the time on the instrument, like Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, or Serge Chaloff! Lars is probably more like the latter two here – swinging with some nice bop inclinations – on tracks recorded with a number of different combos, including four that have trumpeter Chet Baker joining in with Gullin. Titles include "Cool Blues", "Lars Meets Jeff", "Igloo", "Danny's Dream", "All Of Me", "Ma", "Perntz", "Lover Man", "Brash", "Fedja", and "I'll Remember April". CD

Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 4 – Stockholm Street – 1959/1960 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1959/1960. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
Lars Gullin at the end of the 50s – really stretching out a lot as a player, yet also still hanging onto his more boppish roots too! Bigger experiments were to come in the 60s, but here, Gullin's completely confident, completely on top of his baritone sax – blowing the instrument in ways that few other players can match – and really swinging strongly in the company of top-shelf players, on a batch of tracks that include many originals by Lars – which really illustrates his growing depth as a writer! Most sessions were originally recorded for the Artist label, and players include Bengt Arne Wallin on trumpet, Rolf Billberg on alto, Lars Bagge on piano – and on a few, Putte Wickman on clarinet and Eje Thelin on trombone. Titles include "Merlin", "The Black Rose", "Fine Together", "Nightshade", "Blue Mail", "Don't Get Scared", "Baritonome", and "Stockholm Street". CD

Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 8 – Danny's Dream 1953 to 1955 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Early 50s. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
The material that made Lars Gullin a legend – important early 50s sessions for the Metronome label in Sweden, also issued over here in the US by Emarcy – as records that really helped Gullin's fame spread quickly! The tracks really have Lars finding his own voice strongly – using the baritone sax with tenor-like dexterity, in small combo lineups that often use the guitar of Rolf Berg in place of piano – which makes for a really unusual sort of tonal approach! The guitar rings out wonderfully next to the baritone – creating a great interplay of sonic textures – save for a few tracks that feature Lars playing a bit of piano, which he'd take up more strongly in later years. Titles include "Circus", "Manchester Fog", "Jump For Fan", "Bugs", "Stocks & Bonds", "Danny's Dream", "Lars Meets Jeff", and "Igloo" – and CD features a few alternate takes too – plus great notes! Joe Harris, Ake Persson, & Benny BaileyQuincy Here We Come (aka The Music Of Quincy Jones) ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1959. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
An excellent album that's a perfect document of the strong impact that Quincy Jones had in the transatlantic jazz scene of the late 50s and early 60s. The set was recorded in 1960, and features two players that Quincy would leave behind in Europe to have a huge influence on the scene. Trumpeter Benny Bailey is the greatest of these – and his impact on jazz in Germany and Sweden during the 60s and 70s cannot be discounted. The other is drummer Joe Harris, who does excellent work here in a group that includes Arne Domnerus on sax, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – all Swedes that Quincy picked up after touring the country heavily during the late 50s. The set grooves with the best of Jones' work on Mercury from the time – and although Quincy's not listed in the credits, it's probably only because of contractual reasons. Titles are all Jones originals – including "Meet Benny Bailey", "Plenty, Plenty Soul", "Fallen Feathers", and "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". CD

Jan Johansson & Arnes DomnerusYounger Than Springtime – 1959 to 1961 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
Two key Swedish modernists, in three different settings – all of them great, and pulled from tracks originally recorded by the Artist label! The start of the set features a quartet with Arne Domnerus on some mighty sharp alto sax – blown with a mix of soulful undercurrents and modern edges, in a way that reminds us of Charlie Mariano at his early best! Jan Johansson plays piano on these tracks, then spins the group off into a trio for another five numbers – which offer up even more of a focus on his wonderfully angular, fluid lines on the keys! Titles from these sessions include "Exactly Like You", "Where Or When", "There's A Small Hotel", "Now See How You Are", and "Mack The Knife". The set then moves into some Johansson trio material from a year later – with Sture Nordin on bass and Egil Johansen on drums – on titles that include "Becks", "Swingin The Blues", and "Serenade In Blue". The CD ends with one last number – a previously-unissued sextet number titled "Suburban Street" – with Domnerus on alto, Johansson piano, Bengt Arne Wallin on trumpet, and Bjarne Nerem on tenor. CD

Red MitchellCommunication ... CD
Grammofonverket/Dragon (Sweden), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Bassist Red Mitchell got his start on the west coast scene in America – but once he moved to Sweden, his creative powers really opened up – to the point where he was not only a hell of a musician on his initial instrument, but also a colorful pianist and a hell of a leader too! This album's a wonderful demonstration of the genius that Red hit with the Swedes – as it features material that soars with color and life throughout – work that's expressive, but never in a cliched way – and which maybe brings forward an older style of arranging with freshly new spirit for the 70s – but all without every trying to sound too contemporary in ways that would sink its timelesness. If that sounds a bit odd, it's because the music is too – but in a really special way – crafted from tunes by writers who include Cedar Walton, Wolfgang Dauner, Chick Corea, and members of the group – which includes Mitchell on bass and piano, plus Bosse Broberg on trumpet, Nils Sandstrom on tenor, Goran Strandberg on piano, Bertil Strandberg on trombone, and Petur Ostlund on drums. Mitchell even sings a bit in two spots – and the double-length setting makes for some nice long performances – of titles that include "My Woman", "Too Late Now", "Pamukkale", "Cirrus", "Til Jan Johansson", "Windows", "The Rise & Fall Of The Empire", and "The Loner". Thelonious MonkLive In Stockholm 1961 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1961. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 17.99
A beautiful live set from the legendary Thelonious Monk Quartet – that magical lineup you'll know from Monk's early 60s albums on Columbia Records, captured here in a concert performance that really opens up so many different currents of the group's sound! Monk is crucial, of course, on piano – but the group also moves with a perfect sense of timing for his music, thanks to the work of John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums – a group who are then topped by some fantastic tenor work from the amazing Charlie Rouse – a hell of player at many levels, but one who always seemed to hit new heights with Monk! The double-length package really gives the group a lot of room to open up – and tracks move nicely between extended numbers and a few nice shorter bits – on titles that include "Just A Gigolo", "Well You Needn't", "Round Midnight", "Bemsha Swing", "Balu Bolivar Balues Are", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "Jackie-Ing", and "Blue Monk". Eje ThelinEje Thelin At The German Jazz Festival 1964 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1964. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
An amazing set from Swedish trombonist Eje Thelin – a live date, but a totally excellent session that stands as one of the best demonstration of his talents in the 60s! On the European scene at the time, Thelin was easily one of the most inventive players on the trombone – one of the few who could hit the soulful swing of American musicians like Curtis Fuller or JJ Johnson, but also an artist who was starting to stretch out into new realms too – just a touch of Grachan Moncur and Roswell Rudd, with a hint of the modernism that would come later in his career. This album really captures him at the cusp – very creative, yet still mostly swinging and straight ahead – working with a great quintet that also features Ulf Andersson on tenor, Joel Vendroogenbroek on piano and flute, Roman Dylag on bass, and Rune Carlsson on drums. The CD features 6 tracks from an original 60s album, plus one bonus track – with titles that include "The Opener", "I'm Old Fashioned", "Gasoline My Beloved", "Marquese De Villamanga", and "Filmballad". ✨✧ Bill BarronSwedish–American Venture ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1960s/1970s/1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two decades' worth of music from the mighty Bill Barron – all of it great, no matter what the vintage, and recorded by Swedish Radio in a variety of different formats! Some sides are straight, others are quite experimental – and Barron's given plenty of freedom to try out new ideas here, possibly even more than on some of his studio sets from the time. Settings include a large group from 1966, a 1966 quartet with Jan Wallgren on piano and Rupert Clemendore on drums, and quartets with Lars Sjosten on piano, from the years 1966, 1979, and 1984 – including one date that also features Barron on melodica! The recording quality is great throughout, and the 75 minute package is a real testament to Bill's continuously creative energy over the years – far past the initial moments of brilliance shown by some of his 60s contemporaries. Titles include "Variations In Blue", "In & Out", "Celestial Body", "A Swedish American Venture", "Through The Looking Glass", "Flip Flop", "Time Motion Space", and "Jazz Caper". CD

Great work from Stan Hasselgard – a cool jazz clarinet player who was coming up on the Swedish scene at the same time that Jimmy Giuffre was on the rise in the US – and a musician who made a trip over to Los Angeles in the late 40s, where he cut the really fantastic work that's presented in this package! Hasselgard's got a sharp edge that's equally great in bop and swing – and here, he not only works alongside a few great singers – like Billy Eckstine and Johnny White – but also gets help from some great musicians who include Red Norvo on vibes, Dodo Marmarosa and Jimmy Rowles on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Wardell Gray on tenor! We've caught a few of Stan's Capitol Records sides over the years, but this great package is the first to really present his LA material in all its glory – 24 titles that include "Blues For Billy", "Swedish Pastry", "Jam Session At Jubilee", "Who Sleeps", "Sweet & Hot Mop", "Gotta Have More Money", "Flying Foam", "I Never Loved Anyone", "Who's Sorry Now", and "Hortense". Great recordings from Swedish pianist Bengt Hallberg – recorded at a key point in the 50s when he was really building a reputation in the overseas market! The sides here were recorded for Metronome and Pacific Jazz – and feature Hallberg's sharp-edged piano working with a great range of Swedish reedmen – not just baritonist Lars Gulling, as mentioned in the title – but also Arne Domnerus on alto and clarinet, Carl-Henrik Norin on tenor, and Putte Wickman on clarinet – plus added brass from the trumpet of Ernie Englund and trombone of Ake Persson. Moods are modern throughout – and kind of a blend of Swedish postwar with west coast cool – an aspect that made Hallberg ripe for exposure to the US market at the time. Titles include "Pink Lady", "Side Car", "Whiskey Sour", "Red Wails In The Sunset", "Blues In Fourths", and "Meatballs" – and some tracks are presented in multiple takes! CD

There's two 7-minute long jamming cuts on here – "Moon Star" and "Outrageous (The Mind Excursion)" – which both have totally great percussion, and wild guitar playing that's unlike his straighter stuff on other records. Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
The searing second album from Jade Warrior – and a record that shows the world what a mighty guitar powerhouse lurked behind their faux-Japanese aesthetics! The group's a quintet for this record – upped from the debut – and in addition to razor-sharp guitar work from Tony Duhig, there's also some great use of tenor, alto, and flute by newcomer Dave Connors – who works alongside the flute and percussion of group founder Jon Field. Allan Price adds in plenty of drums next to Field's percussion – and the vocals of Glyn Havard are even more powerful here than before – definitely matching the ferocity of his work on the bass! The whole thing's great – a hard rock masterpiece with just the right lighter touches at times, thanks to the reeds – a masterpiece by a group who never got the attention they deserved at the time – apart from hip listeners who really knew where it was at. Soulful sounds from the great Joe Thomas – a reedman who was first known as the Ebony Godfather on some more rough-edged funk at the start of the 70s – but who's equally great here in a larger, warmer setting overall! The record follows the spirit of some of the others in the second chapter of the Groove Merchant label – that time when Sonny Lester changed things over to LRC/LC, and often worked in ways that maybe echoed more of the major label soul fusion styles, but always with a much hipper vibe. The backings here are directed by Brad Baker – who you'll know from the B Baker Chocolate Company work – a great fit for the tight solos from Thomas, who maybe comes across a bit like Grover Washington on Kudu/CTI. The group here is an octet – with a core trio that has Stan in very familiar company, alongside Clark Tracey on drums and Andrew Cleyndert on bass – all illuminated wonderfully by work from Mornington Lockett on tenor and soprano, Simon Allen on tenor, Sammy Mayne on alto, Guy Barker on trumpet, and Mark Nightingale on trombone – all players we don't really know at all, but who bring that same sense of imaginative color to Stan's ideas as some of the more famous British soloists on projects like this from years past. Both works are wonderful – hardly stiff highbrow material at all, and instead pieces that can be enjoyed just as well in terms of their individual tunes – titles that include "Lunar Lanterns", "Moon Cake", "Dragon Boats", "Crackers & Bangers", "Unison", "Building Bridges", "Cuban Connection", and "Humberto's Dream". Okka Disk, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 13.99
Ken Vandermark works here in musical modes first proposed by Joe McPhee – his famous concept of Po Music – performed here by a group that also features Joe, and a whole host of great players from the Chicago scene! Vandermark and McPhee have influenced each other a lot in the past few decades – but the approach here is to return to Joe's early Hat Art use of the Po concept – especially the way it presents ideas as provocation – which are then turned into improvisational fire by a group that includes Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Berman on cornet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, Dave Rempis on saxes, Tim Daisy on drums, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics. Both Vandermark and McPhee play tenor – and the music has an intensity that's amazing for such a large group of improvisers – further proof that all players are very well-matched. Titles include "Impressions Of Eroc Tinu", "Impressions Of Knox", "Impressions Of Astral Spirits/Age", and "Impressions Of Sweet Dragon". CD

Hi Hat, 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
Fully-electrified work from legendary drummer Tony Williams – every bit as searing as you might expect, given that the date features Brian Auger on keyboards and Ronnie Montrose on guitar! The rockish leanings of both of those musicians get plenty of space here, as does the basswork of Mario Cipollina – and the tunes are in the best rock fusion territory of some of Williams' famous studio albums from a few years before – but also maybe have a more spacious quality here in a live setting! The recording quality is strong – the program was originally produced for Japan's NHK Radio – and titles include "There Comes A Time", "Red Alert", "Dragon Song", "Open Fire", "Heads Up", "Tropic Of Capricorn", "Rocky Road", and even a drum solo from Tony! An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and the titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more. 14 tracks on 3LPs. Tramp (Germany), 1970s. Used ... $14.99
One of the coolest, hippest compilations we've heard in years – and a set that uncovers a whole new style of underground grooves from the 70s! The work here is definitely in the funk, soul, and jazz territory of other compilations – but it's also got a unique vibe of its own, too – surprisingly personal at times, which a genre-blending mode that often has jazz-based vocals mixing with funkier rhythms – which then often get odd arrangements and unusual production! The quality's almost a bit in Stark Reality territory – or maybe like some of the best Yesterdays New Quintet records from more recent years – with lots of super-dope elements in the rhythms and instrumentation, and this great vibe to the production that really opens up something new. A stunning set, really – one of the hippest musical discoveries we've heard in a long time – with titles that include "Alone Again" by Jorge Darden, "Tribute To Ruffian" by Innerflight, "Carefree" by Larry Covin, "Dragon Rock" by The PTS, "Let Me Down Easy" by Bold Breed, "Wait For Me" by Bobby Stroup, "Black Velvet Soul" by Cookie Thomas & CT Band, "Cold Soul" by Gemstones, "Solemn Solitude" by Seeds Of Fulfillment, and "Strawberries Raspberries" by Don Hales. Mad funk from one of the heaviest cats on the early 70s Detroit scene – guitar legend Dennis Coffey, finally given his due in a long-overdue collection of his best grooves for Sussex Records! Coffey's guitar has a sound that's been sampled countless times over the past 20 years – a raspy way of laying over a groove that's unlike anything else you'll ever hear – ringing out with a multi-tracked style that almost sounds like a mini-guitar section in itself! One of the most important Sun Ra albums from the early years of Saturn Records – a set that got a bit more circulation than some of his other records, and which shows the group really expanding their sonic range in a wonderful way! The title track takes up all of side one – and is this mystic workout that features Sun Ra on clavioline and piano – an acoustic/electric combination that creates really mindblowing results – and which is echoed by some very inventive reed work from Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, and John Gilmore on tenor. The tune has a brooding intensity that's amazing – very spacey at times, and free, but not in an aggressive way. A surprisingly nice score, done for a relatively goofy Italian comedy at the start of the 80s – set inside a Chinese restaurant in Rome, and handled with some definite Eastern touches in the instrumentation – but all mixed up in funky cop show sort of backings – almost an early 80s take on territory explored by Lalo Schifrin in Enter The Dragon! Obviously, the elements are a bit inauthentic – but given that the film's a comedy, we'll give them a pass – and note that they make a nice change from some of the more standard modes of Italian films like this of the time. The instrumentation's more 70s than you'd expect from the date of the film – and is usually somewhat warm, even when electric – and the set features a total of nine tracks from the movie – appearing here on vinyl for the first time ever. RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The British mod scene of the 60s was drinking up a very heady brew of American jazz, soul, and R&B – then doing a great job of turning it into their own sort of music, as you'll hear on this set! Most of the numbers here are English, but could easily go head-to-head with the most romping tunes on American jukeboxes at the time – particularly the soulful sort of grooves that were flowing out of northern cities like Detroit, Chicago, and New York! Yet there's also something special going on here, too – as the groups aren't just slavishly soulful, but also taking some chances, too – really starting to open up their sound, but not at the level from the more progressive years – just finding the right sort of inspiration, then getting confident enough to give things their own spin. The set list is amazing – very much on a par with the other superb 3CD collections of this nature from RPM – and titles include "Work Song" by James Royal, "Night Comes Down" by Mickey Finn, "What's Her Name" by Guy Darnell, "My Love" by Ronnie Jones, "Taboo Man" by Alexis Kroner, "Mama" by Litz Roza, "Don't That Beat Them All" by Just Five, "Fire In The City" by The Deviants, "Violin Shop" by The Alan Bown, "Elevator" by Grapefruit, "Peacock Dress" by Sun Dragon, "The Eagle Flies On Friday" by The Exceptions, "Girl On A Motorcycle" by British Lion Orchestra, and lots lots more! 87 tracks in all. (Rainbow label stereo pressing. Vinyl is in great shape, but cover has some wear and aging, with some peeled patches and a bit of paper stuck-on to the front.)

Lee Konitz & Gerry MulliganKonitz Meets Mulligan ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1953. Used ... $6.99
A set that's noteworthy not just for the presence of alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, and for the leadership of baritonist Gerry Mulligan – but a record that also features the great Chet Baker on trumpet, working here as part of a trio of musicians who were really helping transform the sound of jazz in the early 50s! And maybe most noteworthy in the set is the lack of any piano at all – a strategy of Mulligan's at the time, but used in a way that also echoes some of Lee's sublime quartet sessions of the mid 50s too – and a nice setting for Chet, as he has plenty of space to open up and craft those magical notes of his youth! The rest of the group features Larry Bunker on drums, and either Carson Smith or Joe Mondragon on bass – and material was recorded partly live, and partly in the studio – with titles that include "Broadway", "Sextet", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Too Marvelous For Words", "Lover Man", "I'll Remember April", and "All The Things You Are". Paul SmithDelicate Jazz ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $13.99
Lovely music from pianist Paul Smith – working here on one of his most standout sessions of the 50s, thanks to the presence of horn players Bob Cooper on tenor and Julie Kinsler on flute! The style is still very much in the same fluid area as Paul's Liquid Sounds work for Capitol – but the addition of the tenor and flute really fleshes things out nicely, and gives the record a sparkling sound that's mighty nice – almost more 60s swinging in its conception at times, especially given the guitar work by Toni Rizzi! In addition to Smith's piano, the group also features bass by Joe Mondragon and drums by Stan Levey – and titles include "Chicken Wings", "Gisele", "Cookie Time", "But Not For Me", "Fine & Dandy", "Lady In Red", and "Love Walked In". Mike Theodore OrchestraCosmic Wind/High On Mad Mountain ... CD
Westbound (UK), 1977/1979. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
70s disco classics from Detroit soul legend Mike Theodore – back to back on one CD! On Cosmic Wind, Mike's come a long way from his early soul days with Dennis Coffey – working here to lay down a set of spacious disco tunes with a dreamy finish – really stretching out with the same sort of glide you'd find in the best Philly club at the time! The record's actually quite strong on the disco side of the spectrum – well-crafted work with a sound that's full and rich, but never cliched – definitely Theodore's moment to shine in the 70s, taking the torch from his old partner Coffey, who had his time in the sun a few years before! Titles include "Cosmic Wind", "The Bull", "Moon Trek", "Brazilian Lullaby", and "Belly Boogie". High On Mad Mountain is a dramatic disco classic that steps out here with all the force you'd expect from the title! The extended title tune is a symphonic disco classic – using strings, congas, and lots of percussion to set up the groove – as guitar and keyboards come into the mix to bring out a nice degree of funk. The rest of the album follows in a similar feel – with a bit of moogy solo work, and some female vocals on the choruses – and titles include "Disco People", "Dragons Of Midnight", "High On Mad Mountain", and "Wonder Man". CD features 11 tracks in all. CD

VariousC89 (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99 30.99
The British scene right at the cusp of the big time – tracks from a moment when the always-indie world of the C86 generation was just about to break into much wider territory, including a fair bit of crossover fame on this side of the Atlantic as well! The fuzzy touches of the Creation Records crowd have been more than absorbed by lots of these groups, as have some of the more offbeat rhythms of the avant pop groups on the fringes – and mixed with some of the more electric beats that Manchester acts were bringing to play, especially with a bit of dancefloor play. Yet throughout it all, there's a superior sense of songcraft that really holds these tracks together – plenty of numbers that shoulda been hits, mixed with work by groups who were just about to break through – and peppered throughout by lots of other gems from artists who just never made it that far. As with all the previous volumes in this wonderful series, there's a stunning level of depth to the whole presentation – really documenting this fantastic moment when it seemed that the British scene was able to turn out wonderful records day after day, week after week – most of them from small labels and upcoming artists. The package features a whopping 72 tracks in all – with work by The Ammonites, Pooh Sticks, Bridewell Taxis, The Popguns, Stone Roses, Strawberry Story, New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Red Chair Fadeaway, Korova Milkbar, The La's, Family Cat, Me & Dean Martin, The Church Grims, Men Of Westness, Said Liquidator, Christine's Cat, Kit, The Rain, The Moss Poles, Treebound Story, The Snapdragons, Just Another Sunny Day, The Orchids, The Bardots, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, and Ambitious Beggars. Funky 70s work from film score maestro Lalo Schifrin – served up with a bit of a disco twist, and plenty of the electric jazz funk elements that were showing up in his soundtracks at the time! Lalo's on keyboards, playing a cool host of electric ones that give the record a nice spacey sound over the top of the funky arrangements – and there's plenty of nice guitar work – either by Eric Gale or John Tropea – which gives the cuts some nice choppy funky bits that drive them a bit harder than you might expect! Titles include an amazing funk remake of "Quiet Village", plus "Dragonfly", "Black Widow", "Baia", "Turning Point", and a version of the "Jaws" theme! CD contains 4 bonus tracks too – "Tabu", "Frenesi", "Con Alma", and an alternate take of "Baia". CD

Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic compilation – and one that will take your collection of German electronic music far past the familiar territory of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream! This series has always been great, but it also seems like the longer it goes, the deeper it digs – which is definitely the case here – as the genius compilers at Soul Jazz mix together rare cuts from better-known names, and more obscure artists from the 70s – in modes that also move past straight electronic music, to include some funky bits, proggy moments, and a nice shift between vocal and instrumental focus – so that there's a really amazing world of music within. Titles include "Pink Sails" and "Driving Sequence" by Klaus Weiss, "Wolf City" by Amon Duul II, "Guten Aben Leute" by Deutsche Wertabeit, "My Strand Eyed Girl" by Virus, "Patella Black" by Alex, "Dragonsong" by Dyzan, "Deluxe" by Harmonia, "Suleika" by Gunter Schickert, "Schopfung" by Witthuser & Westrupp, "Mellodrama 2a" by Et Cetera, "Nearby Shiras" by Kalacakra, "Tanz In Den Himmel" by Emak, and "Ballet Statique" by Conrad Schnitzler. A great mix of funky jazz, jazzy funk, and funky soul – all pulled from the Atlantic catalog of the 60s, and including some very tasty numbers that were only ever issued as funky 45s! The set's one of the nicest in the great Mod Jazz series on Ace, and it's the only one to feature Atlantic material, which rarely ever gets the same funky treatment as other labels from the 60s. Titles include "The Sidewinder" by Tamiko Jones & Herbie Mann, "Do It To Death" by Jackie Ivory, "Jet Set" by Dave Pike, "Fever" by Esther Phillips, "Jam Up Twist" by Tommy Ridgely, "Sticks & Stones (part 1)" by Gene Ludwig, "Bloodshot" by Hubert Laws, "Sombrero Sam" by Charles Lloyd, "The Foolkiller" by Mose Allison, "One Note Samba" by MJQ & Laurindo Almeida, "It's A Funky Thing – Right On (part 1)" by Herbie Mann, "Watermelon Man Ska" by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, "Trese Lobos" by Mark III Trio, "You're The Boss" by LaVern Baker & Jimmy Ricks, "Burnin Coal" by Les McCann, and "Twist City" by Matthew Gee & Johnny Griffin. 26 cuts in all – and like finding a jukebox that's lain dormant in a jazz lounge for 30 years! ✨✧ Jimmy KnepperJimmy Knepper In LA ... LP
Inner City, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A unique later session from trombonist Jimmy Knepper – produced as a Japanese-only release in the 70s by saxophonist Lew Tabackin – who's also a key member of the group! Given that Knepper's best known for his sharp-toned sounds with Charles Mingus in previous decades, this later set is quite a revelation – as it shows a fuller, rounder side of Jimmy's talents – still with a great deal of feeling on the trombone, but in ways that are often more fluid, lyrical, and personal. The group's a hip quintet with Tabackin on both tenor and flute, Roger Kellaway on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and the tunes include some driving Knepper originals, "The Masher" and "Bertha The Dragoness" – plus moody takes on "All The Things You Are", "Yesterdays", and "My Old Flame". Hard to find soundtrack to this early Don Siegel film that starred John Cassavetes, Sal Mineo, and James Whitmore as a bunch of JD's. The score has a dramatic crime jazz sound, similar to Elmer Bernstein's work in the same vein – and the LP also includes Waxman's "Three Sketches for Jazz Orchestra", which features nice solo passages by the likes of Pete Candoli, Joe Mondragon, and Jack Dumont. Arrangements are by Marty Paich, who more than makes things swing – and there's a nice rhythm section dancing underneath a larger group – with Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. Players in the fuller lineup include Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Herb Geller on alto, Bill Perkins on tenor, and Bob Enevoldsen on trombone and tenor – and titles are mostly modern numbers written by other jazzmen like Horace Silver, Denzil Best, Jimmy Giuffre, and Sonny Rollins. A great set of work from a space between the genres – music that's often by rock groups, but who have a very soulful sort of sound – serving up tunes that are sometimes their own take on soul hits of the time, sometimes original material – and always with the sort of funk and soul that's promised in the title! Perfect Toy is one of the few labels around that seems to continue to dig deeply for material we never would have discovered otherwise – and that's definitely the case this time around – as you'll hear on Volume 6 cuts that include "Bang Bang" by What's Happening, "Evil Woman" by Ron Lynch & Bene Regesh, "Take It Low" by Raiders, "Fresh Dirt" by Staff & Management, "Black Time" by Klaas Craats Six, "War" by Hercules & The Black Majic, "Prisoner" by Mike Peace & Filet Of Soul, and "Hardluck" by Snapdragon.
