✨✧ Donald ByrdSlow Drag (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful stuff – and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through – recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you'll hardly find on any of Byrd's other albums from the time. A lot of the credit is due to Sonny Red – who plays with a raspy tone that's odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd's solo skills. Walton's got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some great grooves – and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically, yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms. Includes the Blue Break classic "Jelly Roll", the amazing jazz dancer "Book's Bossa", and the sublime "Slow Drag", one of the strangest groovers you'll ever hear! CD

✨✧ VariousGet A Board – 16 Surf & Hot Road Ho-Downs (plus Wail On The Beach) ... CD
Satan, Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer collection of rare tracks from the glory days of the So-Cal surf rock scene, plus some hot rod tunes too – a glorious mix of vocal and instrumental tracks, all of which show that there's plenty more to discover than just the Beach Boys, Ventures, and Jan & Dean! This hefty CD package actually brings together two album's worth of material – 29 titles in all, not the 16 mentioned on the cover – and almost all the music is pretty darn rare, from the farther reaches of the indie scene of the time – with plenty of fast-driving fuzz guitars on the instrumentals, and some great harmony vocals on the lyrical tracks – all packaged together with the wallop of a huge wave cresting on the shore! Titles include "Varoom" by Warner Brothers, "Swingin Hangout" by Mark Four, "Get A Board" by The Val Rays, "Don't Drag No More" by Suzan Lynne, "Go Mustang" by The Triptides, "Kick Out" by The Safaries, "Surf Bunny Beach" by The Surf Bunnies, "Don't Monkey With Tarzan" by The Pygmies, and "Side Swiped" by The Torquetts. Bonnie Prince BillyI Made A Place ... LP
Drag City, 2019. New Copy ... $26.99
Will Oldham has long since made a place for himself, his alter egos and his band-based efforts alongside the best and most creative performer/songwriters out there – and his first all originals set as Bonnie Prince Billy in a few years stands strongly among his own best! Oldham still leans on country and and folk influences, without ever feeling beholden to creative conventions, and does that beautifully here with a band that brings woodwinds and keys in kind of a hoedown sound, while never steering into western swing territory – a pretty neat creative trick there – plus some gorgeous vocal accompaniment by Joan Shelley. Includes "New Memory Box", "Dream Awhile", "The Devil's Throat", "Look Backward On Your Future, Look Forward To You're Past", "I Have Made A Place", "Squid Eye", "Thick Air", "Building A Fire" and more. Piero PiccioniFumo Di Londra (3CD set) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1966. New Copy 3CD ... $28.99
One of the coolest soundtracks of the 60s – presented here in a massive package that brings forth a wealth of never-reissued music! Piero Piccioni really hit his stride for the music to this film that was directed by its star – the effervescent Alberto Sordi – a fantastic send-up on the London scene of the time, set to a range of modly romping tunes! Piccioni handled the main music – often with loads of great piano and organ lines – but there's also some great vocal moments too, sung by Lydia MacDonald, Julie Rogers, and even Sordi – and the record also features a few touches from I Cantori Moderni, and a bit of music from Ennio Morricone too. Titles include the wonderful "Mr Dante Fontana", a nutty groover about the mod fashion scene in London – and it also features the famous tracks "Richmond Bridge" and "You Never Told Me". Titles include a few versions of "Fontana" and "Richmond", plus "Ascot Dream", "Magic Castle", "Tango Walk", "Drag Beat", "This Is Life", "Palace Parade March", "Babylon, I'm Coming", and "His Dream Has Come True". 3CD set features the full original album in both mono and stereo – plus 71 bonus tracks from the film score! VariousThat'll Flat Git It! Volume 35 – Rockabilly & Rock N Roll From The Vaults Of Mercury & Limelight Records ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
Hard-rocking gems from the second decade of Mercury Records – a label that first broke big in the postwar years with a strong ear for up-and-coming R&B – and one who continued that close to the ground success during the early years of rock and country music as well! Mercury wasn't as close to the south as some of its contemporaries, but it had a really great ear for key talent, and would often scour points far from its Chicago home in search of budding talents in a variety of genres – which means that the work here is definitely at the top of the pack for the time – tunes that have the sharp bristle of cuts on Chess, Sun, or Starday – the latter of whom was an early partner in helping Mercury find talent. The set features 35 tracks in all, with the superb presentation and detailed notes of previous volumes – on titles that include "Sittin On Top" by Curtis Gordon, "Rockin Robert" by The LaDell Sisters, "My Search" by Ben Hewett, "Baby Baby Baby" by Eddie Bond, "Shake It Up" by Conway Twitty, "My Foolish Fling" by The Half Brothers, "The Last Drag" by Voxpoppers, "Downtown" by Orville Couch, "I Want You Baby" by Jackie Cray, "I'll Never Let It Show" by Charlie Walker & The Four Pals, "Shake This Town" by The Counts, and "Cry Baby Cry" by Narvel Felts. Drag City, 2016. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A grimy gem from the indefatigable Ty Segall! Backed by here by The Muggers – with frequent co-horts including Mikal Cronin and new collaborators Emmett Kelly (Cairo Gang), Dale Crover (Melvins) and others – it's got a tense, murky vibe quite unlike his earlier records! It's dense and dissonant, but has strong songcraft – with weird bits of keyboard that remind us of pre-WB Devo (as does the creepy baby mask on the cover...coincidence?) without burying the raw garagey rock at the core. Includes "Squealer", "Californian Hills", "Emotional Mugger/Leopard Priestess", "Breakfast Eggs", "Diversion", "Baby Big Man (I Want A Mommy)", "Mandy Cream", "Candy Sam", "Squeler Two". "WUOTWS" and "The Magazine". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderfully sweet work from Azita – a record that's light years away from the grittier no wave of her roots – and which shows a maturation and focus in her songwriting that really blows us away! The songs are wonderful – way more open than we might have guessed many years back – and there's this quality to the overall set that would have had Azita knocking older contemporaries like Liz Phair or Tracey Thorn on their ass – although, thankfully, the set will end up being a nice little secret between the few of us – and not the stuff of 90s indie rock power wars! Azita plays all instruments herself, the guitar with an especially lovely sort of jangle – and titles include "If U Die", "Our Baby", "Shooting Birds Out Of The Sky", "Don't", "Two Brutal Moving Parts", and "Online Life". The best, most atmospheric and sweeping effort yet from Bitchin' Bajas – a 2LP, nearly 80 minute set of always engaging avant instrumentals – full off loping electronic, percussive and string textures that are hypnotic all the way. It's like the core trio set out to subvert the expectations of post-millennium experimental or post-rock instrumentals, going for a vibe that's a lot more captivating, and they keep them consistently evolving throughout a really expansive and ever evolving set. The core trio gets some top shelf guest accompaniment in guitarist Masaki Batoh, Jim Becker on organ, Nick Broste on trombone, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet and Nori Tanaka on percussion, and titles include "Jammu Circles On Circles", a cool cover (or maybe adaptation is a better word) of Sun Ra's "Angels & Demons At Play", "Yonaguni", "2303", "Chokayo" and "Be Going". ✨✧ DeathFor The Whole World To See ... LP
Drag City, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pre-punk bit of charged, hard grooving Motor City rock from Death – a lost record that takes a tightly coiled, blazing approach to their influences of garage rock and psychedelia – and a record that's all the better in that it was recorded way back in 1975! To put it bluntly, music didn't really sound like this in '75 – and it would be as easy to label the sound as something like, "mid 70s Detroit African American precursor to Husker Du", etc, but this is a honestly a pretty remarkable album for its time that we don't want to trivialize it with a lazy nutshell description. The group does distill their influences in a way that's reminiscent of some midwestern post punk, but Death is pre-punk, making it a really fascinating record, and a blast to crank up in your headphones! Titles include "Keep On Knocking", "Rock-N-Roll Victim", the longer, seemingly Arthur Lee influenced "Let The World Turn" (eventually nailing a fiercer sound the likes of which Love never messed with), "You're A Prisoner", "Freakin Out", "Where Do We Go From Here???" and "Politicians In My Eyes". 7 songs, 27 minutes, and pretty awesome. An instrumental classic from the glory days of Starday Records – a set that features singing steel guitar and dobro from the team of Shot Jackson and Buddy Emmons! Shot's on the front cover, without Buddy – and the liner notes of these old albums never tell us too much about the contents – so we're guessing that Jackson's the main soloist, with some help from Emmons on steel guitar – but whatever the setting, the sound is superb – that kind of crisp, clear, no-nonsense approach that always made Starday sessions like this so great! Titles include "Fort Worth Drag", "Singing Strings Of Steel", "Riding The Rails", "Hound Dog Blues", "Honky Tonk Angels", "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight", and "Plantation Home". CD

A really fantastic compilation – and one that will take your collection of German electronic music far past the familiar territory of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream! This series has always been great, but it also seems like the longer it goes, the deeper it digs – which is definitely the case here – as the genius compilers at Soul Jazz mix together rare cuts from better-known names, and more obscure artists from the 70s – in modes that also move past straight electronic music, to include some funky bits, proggy moments, and a nice shift between vocal and instrumental focus – so that there's a really amazing world of music within. ✨✧ Marty PaichJazz For Relaxation ... CD
Tampa/VSOP, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Don't let the title fool you, because "relaxation" doesn't mean "sleepy" – and Marty Paich's at his early swinging best on the set! The album's a trio with Paich in the lead on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Larry Bunker on either vibes or drums – really stepping out strongly in a mode that's rhythmic and swinging on most of the numbers, hardly the stuff of "relaxation" – and already showing that great capacity for syncopated arrangements that made Paich's later work as an arranger of larger groups so great. There's a pulsating flow to the whole thing – and Paich contributes 2 great originals, "Theme From Lighthouse" and "Dool's Blues" – and cuts it up nicely on more familiar numbers that include "What's New", "The Lamp Is Low", "Jump For Me", and "I'll Remember April". ✨✧ John McLaughlinDevotion ... LP
Douglas, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An intensely jamming album from guitarist John McLaughlin – and a record that set a whole new tone for electric jazz in the 70s! The album was recorded shortly after McLaughlin's work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and Tony Williams on the first Emergency album – and in a way, it's a key piece of the jazz-rock fusion puzzle that has those two sets as cornerstones. McLaughlin's working here with keyboardist Larry Young from the Emergency group – playing both his usual organ on the record, plus a bit of electric piano – and the rest of the group includes bassist Billy Rich, plus superdrummer Buddy Miles – really giving a lot of power to the album's sound at the bottom! McLaughlin is getting into a bit of his mystic trip on the record, but is still playing with a lot of electric power here – plenty distorted and fuzzy on most numbers, and really jamming throughout! Titles include "Devotion", "Dragon Song", "Marbles", "Siren", "Don't Let The Dragon Eat Your Mother", and "Purpose Of When". LP, Vinyl record album

Signature, 1960. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A west coast combo takes on tunes from the New York scene – songs from two successful musicals at the end of the 50s – both given a brand new spin here from the combo of pianist Jimmy Rowles! Rowles didn't get a chance to cut many records during this point in his career – but every time he did, it seemed like he brought something special to the table – as he does here, working with Larry Bunker on both vibes and drums, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Alton Hendrickson on guitar – players who are able to adapt to Jimmy's sense of playful arrangement and effortless shift between swinging groove and deeper emotion. The tunes here aren't nearly as familiar as those from over-recorded Broadway shows of the time – which further helps bring a freshness to the record – and titles include "Merry Party", "Look For A Sky Of Blue", "The Very Next Man", "Gentleman Jimmy", "Little Tin Box", and "Where Do I Go From Here". Rural/Modern Harmonic, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $35.99 37.99
A fantastic little surf soundtrack record – and one that's very different than both the guitar instrumental and jazz-based albums that showed up earlier in the genre! This one is much more like some of the Australian rock scores that started to show up at the end of the 60s – very trippy, and with a weird mix of psych styles, and some really surprising rootsy touches too – so that you'll get fuzzy guitar one minute, and North Cali acoustic sounds the next – all jumping around in this really great way! Production and the whole project is by Daryl Dragon – of later fame – and here, he's a madman in the studio – using cool effects to create some really great moments on some of the tunes. Dragon also handles some of the music, too, amidst a wide variety of other artists and singers – listed here in groups that include The Bozone, Dan Peyton, Al Oakie & Friends, Richard Henn & Co, The Dragons, BFI, and Helpers. Very hip – like the best Aussie surf rock sounds at the end of the 60s! LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Aleph, 1973. New Copy ... About April 15, 2021 (delayed)
A classic to end all classics – and the record that showed the world that the kung fu genre could be every bit as funky as American crime and action films! Lalo Schifrin's at the height of his powers on this set – working in a blend of raw guitars, rolling bass, and choppy rhythms that groove about as fast as Bruce Lee's hands move on the screen in the film – and the album's a real standout in the 70s soundtrack scene, well worth all the hype and attention that's been given to it over the years! The record's one you'll dig if you're a fan of funk, or a student of Schifrin – and even after the passage of decades, it's still a tough soundtrack to beat. Titles include the classic "Theme From Enter The Dragon", plus "Bamboo Bird Cage", "The Monk", "Han's Island", "The Big Battle", and "The Human Fly". PNL (Norway), 2012. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really amazing meeting of talents – as the legendary Bobby Bradford comes into play with reedman Frode Gjerstad and drummer Paal Nilssen Love! The relatively free performance was recorded in Poland – a scene that's fast becoming a key meeting place for avant jazz talents – and Bradford's cornet hasn't had a setting this powerful in years – boldly blown with some of its old force on some tracks, and coming across with beautiful textures and sounds in more subtle moments that feature interplay with Gjerstad's alto and clarinets. Paal's drumming is just right at most spots – especially when he's respectful of the quieter interplay between the horns – and titles include "Pitaya", "Pogona", "Draco", "Komodo Dragon", "Dracaena", and "Agamidae". Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Four great albums from reedman Jimmy Giuffre – all of them representing a bold step forward for his music! Three of the albums here – Dragonfly, Quasar, and Liquid Dancers – feature the Jimmy Giuffre 4 – a group that moves between fusion touches and some of the freer modes of Giuffre's later years! Jimmy himself is all acoustic – working on flute, soprano, tenor, and clarinet – but the group also features a fair bit of keyboards from Pete Levin, who plays Fender Rhodes, moog, and oberheim – plus electric bass from Bob Nieske and percussion and marimba from Randy Kaye. The best tracks have a pensive, introspective quality – Giuffre's reeds snaking around the keyboards nicely, with a sense of warmth you might not have expected from him a decade or so before – and a sonically sensitive quality that's mighty nice too. The fourth album in the box – Conversations With A Goose – features Jimmy's clarinet and soprano sax in a trio with Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass – working in a mode that really gets back to some of Giuffre's most exploratory music of the 60s! Bley's piano is wonderful – spinning out in lines that really set Jimmy loose – and although some tracks are short, they still have a tremendous amount of creative interplay. There's some solo moments on the record that are especially expressive – a great chance to hear that amazing Giuffre sound, still razor-sharp in these later years. Box set features 38 tracks in all. ✨✧ Buddy DeFrancoI Hear Benny Goodman & Artie Shaw – The Complete Plays Benny Goodman & Artie Shaw Sessions Vol 2 ... CD
Verve/Lonehill (Spain), 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Buddy DeFranco plays tunes associated with Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw – but in a completely different way than before – with a wider-open swing for the 50s! The work here is all small combo, not big band – and there's a free-flowing groove that's totally great – a sound that carries echoes of the earlier years, but which comes across with that modern inflection to swing that made Buddy's years at Verve so great. Few players could come up with a balance of modes as great as this – and on the 2 sessions in the set, DeFranco's clarinet is caught alongside trumpet from either Don Fagerquist or Ray Linn, tenor from Georgie Auld, vibes from Victor Feldman or Larry Bunker, piano from Jimmy Rowles or Carl Perkins, guitar from Barney Kessel, bass from Leroy Vinnegar or Joe Mondragon, and drums from Stan Levey or Milt Holland. Second volume is a 2CD set – with 22 titles that include "Don't Be That Way", "After You've Gone", "Flying Home", "Soft Winds", "Limehouse Blues", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "I Surrender Dear", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "All The Things You Are". Brigitte Fontaine & AreskiTheatre Musical (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Monster Melodies (France), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99
One of the most obscure recordings by this amazing duo – singers Brigitte Fontaine and Areski, who you might know best from their work on the legendary Saravah Records at the start of the 70s! The work here isn't musical theater, but was instead recorded for French radio in 1973 – and is maybe even more experimental than some of the duo's other albums of the time – still this amazing blend of poetic lyrics, matched-up voices, and light acoustic instrumentation – but sometimes less song-based than at other points – with Fontaine really bringing a lot of subtle drama into her performance! The whole thing is beautiful – a much-needed addition to the small catalog of this legendary duo – on titles that include "Le Silence", "Intermede Theatral Part 1", "Nous Avons Tant Parle", "Bali", "Le Dragon", "Six Septembre", "Eros", and "La Renarde Et Le Belier Touffu". Sacred Bones, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
A tremendous collection of work from moog maestro Mort Garson – a name you might know from projects like the Wozard Of Iz, Lucifer, or Ataraxia – stepping out here on some much more obscure recordings, including some that appear here for the first time ever! Garson was easily one of the hippest and most talented artists to work with the moog and related analogue electronics – and his music was always a cut above some of the more simple moog pop instrumentals – as Mort brought in lots of original ideas and compositions to his recordings, while also using the electronics for melody as much as for effect. That blend is very much in place here – on tracks from a number of different projects, including some cool advertising work – and at times, there's a slinky sensuality to Garson's electronics that almost sound like the Italian cinema work of Stelvio Cipriani. Titles include "Killers Of The Wild", "Music For Advertising 2", "Is He Trying To Tell Us Something (inst)", "Geisha Girl", "Space Walker", "Dragonfly", "Cathedral Of Pleasure", "Realizations Of An Aeropolis", and "Son Of Blob Theme". Universal (Japan), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99
One of the wildest sets ever recorded by Japanese guitarist Ryo Kawasaki – and that's saying a lot, given some of his other work! The vibe here is fusion, but with a definite 80s spacey twist that's hinted at by the cover – as Kawasaki handles most of the instruments himself, mixing his cool guitar lines with keyboards, rhythm patterns, and other elements – all in a wonderful wave of sound, almost similar to some of the Japanese electronic instrumental work of the time, but still very jazz-oriented overall! Titles include a nice reading of "Concierto De Aranjuez" – plus "Cancion Del Fuego Fatuo", "Introduction From Schelomo", "A Felicidade", "Marilyn", "Mercy Of The Dragon", "Hawaiian Caravan", and "Twilight Song". Capitol, 1961. Used ... $9.99
With Stan at the helm, you can bet that this set is anything but "blues" in the traditional sense – and is instead more one of Kenton's tone poems of color – tuned to the darker hues of the spectrum, and served up perfectly in a batch of beautifully shimmering arrangements! There's still plenty of Kenton's modern touches in the way the album's laid out, but the overall feel is moody and blue-toned – arranged mostly by Gene Roland, who also composed all the original tracks for the set. Titles include "Dragonwyck", "Blue Ghost", "Exit Stage Left", "Aphrodisia", "Fitz", and "The Blues Story". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Ten Bars Ago", "Lady Luck", and "Night At The Gold Nugget (first version)". CD

Honest Jons/Moondog's Corner (UK), 1953. Used ... $24.99
Gentle genius from the legendary Moondog – a rare album recorded right around the same time as his mindblowing work for Prestige! The style here is very similar to those Prestige albums – very spare and rhythmic – often just using simple acoustic percussion alongside an instrument or two, such as flute, bass, or one of Moondog's own unusual creations! The sound is really otherworldly – at once both cosmic and earthy, with sounds that are light years ahead of most of Moondog's contemporaries. Titles include "Tree Frog", "Oasis", "Suite No 1", "Suite No 2", "Dragon's Teeth", "Rim Shot", and "Why Spend The Dark Night With You?". A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! Hard grooving surf pop from the early-to-mid 60s – and this one's from the ladies – sun soaked, pulpy surf and drag strip rockers featuring The Honeys, Donna Loren, The Surfettes, Andrea Carroll, The Westwoods, Ellie Gee & The Jets, Dee Dee Sharp, Little Pattie & The Statesmen and many more! The solo and girl group vocals are a great mix of sweetness and rebelliousness, and the same could be said for the songs – which also masterfully mix knowing kitsch and genuine rockers. BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 18.99
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more – plus the CD bonus track "Original Bill" by Koichi Matsukaze Trio. 15 tracks on 2CDs. Pye/Vocalion (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. Titles include "Kojak", "Big Boss", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Mr Majestyk", "Magnum Force", "Fist Of Fury", and "Airport 1975". CD

✨✧ Anthony MooreOut (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Virgin/Drag City, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An obscure album from offbeat songwriter Anthony Moore – originally recorded by Virgin Records during its most creative period! Moore was a key part of British art rockers Slapp Happy, and a member of Henry Cow too – but the music here is much different than those better-known groups – songs that are maybe a bit more down to earth, although certainly with all these wonderful twists and turns – maybe to Moore's earlier work what the song-based 70s work of Robert Wyatt was to Soft Machine – or maybe a bit like some of the late decade work of Kevin Ayers or John Cale. By that, we mean that there's plenty of tunefulness, but the work is far from commercial – and surprisingly strong from a songwriting perspective – something we might never have said about Moore's work in Slapp Happy. Titles include "You Tickle", "The River", "Driving Blind", "The Pilgrim", "Johnny's Dead", "Dreams Of Laughter", "Stitch In Time", and "A Thousand Ships". LP, Vinyl record album

Aurora, Illinois may never have given the world that much – but now the city can rightfully claim its place in the rock and roll cosmos – as the home of this fantastic early 70s album from Stump Water! The group have a sound that's a lot sweeter than their name – and are a trio, with a wonderfully harmonic sound – mixing acoustic guitars with their voices, at a level that's maybe somewhere in the territory of America or Simon & Garfunkel – but a bit darker, and more personal too! These guys are clearly of the generation inspired by the changes in the post-CSNY universe – modes that allowed a certain sort of singer or songwriter to really move past folk standards, and really open up the best blue-eyed inspirations in their music. Titles include "Motel In Saginaw", "Frozen Man", "Cockcrow", "Growing Time", "The Hermit", "Blind Darkness", "Now That He's Passed Away", and "Romantic Courtship Turns Into Boring Marriage Blues". Funky genius from a mighty unique group – one who've drunk deep on the classic steel band sounds of the 70s, but who've also refined that groove with a contemporary funk approach too! The group's the brainchild of Bjorn Wagner – who you might know from The Mighty Mocambos – and the sound here is every bit as well-crafted as that combo, but with the difference of steel drums in the mix! The drums provide most of the melodic elements, while the funky backings kick things up nicely – all at a level that's maybe even funkier than some of the best funky steel drum albums of the 70s – especially across the space of the entire album. Titles include "Xxplosive", "Touchdown", "Burn", "Real Hot", "Hoola Hoop", "1 Thing", "Crockett Theme", "Bocas Del Dragon", "Bushfire", and "I Love You". Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". ✨✧ ChaseChase ... LP
Epic, 1971. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The debut album from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The striking debut of Oscar Jerome – a UK singer/songwriter who works with a fair bit of jazzy elements here – thanks in part to some Rhodes and keyboards from Joe-Armon Jones! The set's the kind of genre-stepping record that we'd expect from some of Jones' London contemporaries – music that's familiar at one level, but very different and fresh at another – as Oscar sings and plays guitar on most tracks, but in a mode that's not easy to categorize at all! The guitar often has lots of jazzy phrasing, but is never straight jazz – and the lyrics are upfront, but sometimes equally balanced with things that the guitar is saying too. Although Jerome sounds nothing like him, we might compare the uniqueness of his approach to territory explored by Vini Reilly many years ago – a space that's very much his own, on titles that include "Give Back What U Stole From Me", "Your Saint", "Coy Moon", "Gravitate", "Draggin My", "Timeless", and "Sun For Someone". Zdenka Kovacicek has a completely different way of phrasing than most other European singers we've heard – all these weird twists, turns, and sharp little angles that are a perfect fit for the quirky styles of the backings – which begin in a mode that's clearly trying to emulate American soul of the time, but which also moves into some weirder, more unusual territory too! There's a few mellower cuts that have some nice Fender Rhodes – and some other icy keyboards, too – and titles include "Necu Da Znam", "Dragi Mi Je Lijep K'O Slika", "Mali Crnit Brat", "Kobra", "Elektra", "Muzika", and "Hello Mr Elton John". Detto MarianoDelitto Al Ristorante Cinese ... LP
GDM/Musica Per Immagini (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... $36.99
A surprisingly nice score, done for a relatively goofy Italian comedy at the start of the 80s – set inside a Chinese restaurant in Rome, and handled with some definite Eastern touches in the instrumentation – but all mixed up in funky cop show sort of backings – almost an early 80s take on territory explored by Lalo Schifrin in Enter The Dragon! Obviously, the elements are a bit inauthentic – but given that the film's a comedy, we'll give them a pass – and note that they make a nice change from some of the more standard modes of Italian films like this of the time. The instrumentation's more 70s than you'd expect from the date of the film – and is usually somewhat warm, even when electric – and the set features a total of nine tracks from the movie – appearing here on vinyl for the first time ever. Joe ThomasHere I Come ... LP
LC, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
Soulful sounds from the great Joe Thomas – a reedman who was first known as the Ebony Godfather on some more rough-edged funk at the start of the 70s – but who's equally great here in a larger, warmer setting overall! The record follows the spirit of some of the others in the second chapter of the Groove Merchant label – that time when Sonny Lester changed things over to LRC/LC, and often worked in ways that maybe echoed more of the major label soul fusion styles, but always with a much hipper vibe. The backings here are directed by Brad Baker – who you'll know from the B Baker Chocolate Company work – a great fit for the tight solos from Thomas, who maybe comes across a bit like Grover Washington on Kudu/CTI. Titles include "Green Dragon", "Same Old Song", "Place In Space", "Gotcha", and "Here I Come". LP, Vinyl record album

Putte Wickman & Hal Galper TrioTime To Remember (aka Miss Oidipus) ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1986. Used ... $9.99
Beautiful music from the team of Putte Wickman and Hal Galper – players we're not sure ever recorded before this date, but who seem to be a great fit for each other! Wickman's one that we always love – an artist whose use of the clarinet makes him one of our favorites on the instrument – blowing it with a quality that's almost more like a soprano sax than anything else – with some of the same depths of sound and exotic currents you might hear in the best European work from Tony Scott. Galper's touch on the keys has just the right sort of sensitivity for Wickman's horn – and the tunes move in a mix of old school swinging and more modern tonal modes – either of which comes off well, thanks to help from Steve Gilmore on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums. Titles include "A Dear One", "After The Storm", "I'll Remember April", "Miss Oidipus", and "Up With The Lark". CD features a bonus take of "A Dear One". CD

BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 18.98
A completely different side of Colombian music than you'd know from Discos Fuentes and some of the other mainstream outlets from that scene – as the tracks here are all from the contemporary underground, and represent a really rich flowering of creative grooves and soulful modes! In truth, most of this work might hail from any hip spot in the global underground – save for the fact that the lyrics are often in Spanish, and many tunes have some slight reference to older musical modes – sometimes an acoustic element mixed in with more electronic instrumentation, sometimes a more direct reference! The quality of the tracks is wonderful – a really strong surprise to our ears, as we never would have discovered this music otherwise – and it represents a really great alternative so some of the more staid, often boring attempts to create a global fusion of elements in the mainstream. Titles include "Cada Paso" by Liannia, "Cumbia Lobina (ext mix)" by Dragao featuring Nidia Gongora, "Aquazero" by Systema Solar featuring Pedro Ramaya, "Oyele" by Jimena Angel, "Cuando Canto Grito" by Cerrero featuring Lucia Pulido, "El Leopardo" by El Leopardo, "Mujer Divina" by Salsangroove, "Gualayo" by Radio Rebelde Soundsystem, "La Negra Y El Fantasma" by Bareto, "Nunca Termina" by David Caneva Akle, "Manana Sera" by Ruzto, and "De Donde Vengo Yo" by Los Transatlanticos featuring Pilar Matarola. Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic landscape of Japanese jazz – served up here on a host of tracks that are mostly from small overseas labels in the 70s – and which represent the tremendous flowering of Japanese jazz musicians in the decade! The set is especially strong on contributions from pianists – but these aren't trio tracks rehashing older standards – as many of the numbers also feature excellent saxophonists, and almost all the tracks here are originals – written in that spirited style that makes the newly-confident generation of jazz such a change from the one before. Titles include "7 Time" by Toshinori Kondo, "Straight No Chaser" by Shigeo Maruyama, "Karifua" by Shoji Aketagawa, "Intrepid Fox" by Kazumi Odagiri, "Soul Tomato" by Miyasaka Takashi, "Merry Go Round" by Mabumi Yamaguchi, "Waltz For Baby" by Yasuhiro Kohno, "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Tarashima with Harold Land, "Piranha" by Fumio Karashima, and "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa. La La Land, 1964. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Music from an ultra-cool kid cartoon of the 60s – sounding almost better here away from the screen than it did in the TV show! The main theme of Johnny Quest has a great current of mod jazz, and there's a fair bit of that on some of the other tracks too – modes that usually feature a larger ensemble with great horn work, in a style that's maybe almost the sound that you'd get if Henry Mancini were scoring a cartoon – with all the richness of color that might imply! Other tracks are more scene-setters, but still quite far from the usual modes for a cartoon – and although the music's credited partly to the show's creators, the Hanna-Barbera team, we're guessing the real genius comes from the music direction of Hoyt Curtain and Ted Nichols. 2CD set features material from a number of different shows – including "Dragons Of Ashida", "The Robot Spy", "Arctic Splashdown", "Calcutta Adventure", "Treasure Of The Temple", "Attack Of The Tree People", "Terror Island", "The Mystery Of The Lizard Men", and "The Curse Of Anubis" – plus other shows too, the main themes, and even some bonus tracks! ✨✧ Joe McPheeTenor & Fallen Angels ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1976/1977. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mindblowingly beautiful set of solo tenor tracks by Joe McPhee – a record that's almost as important to that instrument as Anthony Braxton's For Alto set was for the alto sax! The record features just Joe blowing, and nothing else – stretching out in open space, and slowly exploring his tone and sound with a confidence and creative energy that's totally great. The sound is never too far out, and one thing we really appreciate is Joe's sense of timing here – almost a bit of a swing in some of the tracks, even though there's no other instrumentation backing him up. Yet that quality also doesn't hold him back from really reaching out, either – and there's a tonal quality to the solos that's really beautiful – like Sonny Rollins at his 60s creative best, but even more unfettered. Titles include "Knox", "Sweet Drago", "Good Bye Tom B", and "Tenor". CD adds in the bonus track "Fallen Angels" – also solo, but much rawer, and recorded a year after the main album. CD

BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and the titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more. 14 tracks on 3LPs. Ace (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard driving pulp instrumentals from the vaults of Norman Petty – seedy little rockers from 1961-1967 – walloping tunes by The King Pins, The Chandelles, The Five Counts, The Fireballs, The Bentleys, The Chances, The Rhythm Masters and more! The tunes carry the hallmarks of the vintage b-movie, drag strip & bikini strewn beach genres of the time – but most have heavier, headier and moodier tones that pre-figures the later garage rock and proto punk sounds. Titles include "Door Banger" (aka Ninety Four Second Surf) by The King Pins, "El Gato", by the Chandelles, "Riptide" by The Impact 5, "Wild Jam" by The Gliders, "Dream Theme" by The Techniques, "Boy Blue" by The Kingmen, "Termites" by The Cords, "Wild Kitten" by The Rhythm Masters, "Skokiaan" by The Fayrds and more. 24 tracks in all – a number of which were unreleased until now! Far Out (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length set we've seen from Daniel Maunick – an artist who you might know from his remix work as Venom, or for his ties to the Incognito universe – given that Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick is his father! Yet the sound here is definitely Daniel's own – rootsier than some of his remix work, but with the feature future-sounding elements of those tracks too – almost a globe's worth of sonic elements, fused with more contemporary keyboards and beats – providing a great bridge between some of the 12" releases of the Far Out label, and directions they might take in the future. The percussion on some tracks is especially nice – and maybe ties Daniel's music to some of the global house currents at the start of this century – on titles that include "Sombra Do Dragao", "Until The End", "A Vicious Circle", "One Nite Stand", "Red Doves", "Orbitus", "As Light Fades", and "Amnesia Haze". The tracks are nice and lean – cop show funk, but without fuller orchestrations – so that you can really concentrate on the funky drums, basslines, guitar riffs, and keyboard parts – plus some occasional moogy moments that spice things up in a mighty nice way! Okka Disk, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 13.99
Ken Vandermark works here in musical modes first proposed by Joe McPhee – his famous concept of Po Music – performed here by a group that also features Joe, and a whole host of great players from the Chicago scene! Vandermark and McPhee have influenced each other a lot in the past few decades – but the approach here is to return to Joe's early Hat Art use of the Po concept – especially the way it presents ideas as provocation – which are then turned into improvisational fire by a group that includes Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Berman on cornet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, Dave Rempis on saxes, Tim Daisy on drums, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics. Both Vandermark and McPhee play tenor – and the music has an intensity that's amazing for such a large group of improvisers – further proof that all players are very well-matched. EMI/Virgin (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great late 70s set from Bert Jansch – a set that's maybe a bit of a return to his roots, but which also really marks Jansch as a much stronger vocalist than he ever was in the early days! There's this confidence and maturity to the lyrics that's really great – Bert inflecting things with that voice that must have been one of the most unusual on the UK scene, even in the smaller folk rock world of his roots – and although the instrumentation is relatively lean, the tunes have a fullness and gentle sort of majesty that's very different than 60s Jansch in a similar mode. The whole thing's wonderful – maybe a bit overlooked in the year when punk was exploding – but proof that some of the more timeless artists of the generation were still turning out impeccable work. Titles include "Daybreak", "One To A Hundred", "Pretty Saro", "Doctor, Doctor", "3AM", "St Fiacre", "If You See My Love", "Poor Mouth", "Cat & Mouse", "Three Chord Trick", and "Lost Love". A fantastic legacy in music from Mohamed Mazouni – an Algerian singer who worked towards political ends during the heady changes of the 60s – and who soon left his native country work over a decade's worth of recording in Paris! The Paris/Arab continuum was stronger than ever after the Algerian war – and the music of Mazouni was a key sound of that moment – songs that drew heavily on the elements of his roots, but which also brought in sounds of exile too – occasional electric guitar riffs, folded in with percussion, stringed instruments, and exotic woodwinds – all topped by the very unique vocals of the man himself. This double-length package features notes in both French and English, really getting at the special hybrid taking place – and titles include "Clichy", "Cherie Madame", "Tu N'Es Plus Comme Avant", "L'Amour Maak", "Je Pense A Celle", "Mon Amour Il Est Gentil", "Daag Dagui", "Adieu La France", "La Madrague", and "20 Ans En France". A really fantastic album from tenorist Harold Land – a very rare Japanese set that may well blow away even his best albums of the 70s! The record features pianist Makoto Tarashita in the lead – a strongly spiritual player with a nicely modal sensibility – spun out over long tracks that have wonderful energy, and which seem to set Land loose on these solos that are full of life and imagination, and a sense of soul that he doesn't always bring to the studio! The rest of the group features Yasushi Yoneki on bass, Mike Reznikoff on drums, and Takayuki Koizumi on percussion – and the percussion really adds a lot to the songs, picking up the rhythmic core, while also giving them a nicely organic vibe too. A tremendous album from Thundercat – an artist who just seems to get better and better with every new record, and who's maybe here defining a genre that's completely unto himself! The record is soulful, and has a lot of contemporary cosmic currents – but it's also more far-reaching and fluid than anything that Thundercat's ever given us before – still done with key help from Flying Lotus, but with a majestic, confident quality that seems to have the duo ready to take over the universe! The airy soulful vocals are great, but the rhythms and instrumentation are maybe even more compelling – as there's a number of tunes here that are almost impossible to describe in words, even though they're instantly appealing and wonderfully soulful – a balance that's the sort of special genius from an artist who's ready to write himself into the pop music history books with a key release like this.
