✨✧ Miles DavisBags Groove ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1954. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! The title track on the album is a key reading of "Bag's Groove", presented here in two versions, both recorded by a quintet that includes Milt "Bags" Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – carving out the tune in a nicely modern idiom. The rest of the set features work by Miles in a quintet with Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver – again with support from Heath and Clarke – on tunes that include 2 versions of "But Not For Me", plus early recordings of Sonny Rollins' standards "Oleo", "Airegin", and "Doxy". Elmo HopeIntroducing the Elmo Hope Trio ... LP
Blue Note, 1953. Sealed ... $16.99
Seminal early work from Elmo Hope that was part of Blue Note's "New Faces – New Sounds" series during the early 50s. Hope's working here with Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones – and the trio go to town on numbers that include complicated bop tunes like "Carving The Rock" and "Hot Sauce", plus more melodic tunes like "Freffie" and "Mo Is On". As always, Hope proves himself to be one of the greatest pianists in jazz history – right up there with Monk, Herbie Nichols, and Bud Powell, bristling with excitement that few of his contemporaries (save those three) could match! This 12-inch issue also includes the bonus track "It's A Lovely Day Today". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny RollinsWorktime! ... CD
Prestige, 1955. Used ... $2.99
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me". CD

Joel RossParable Of The Poet ... CD
Blue Note, 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The "poet" in the title is very well-put here – as vibist Joel Ross continues to mature into one of the most distinctive artists in contemporary jazz – not just a unique player on his chosen instrument of the vibes, but also a leader who can take a session like this and really make something different and distinct! Ross' vibes are certainly part of the album's appeal – but the whole thing is more of a larger vision in jazz – equally well-shaped by the contributions of Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Maria Grand on tenor, and Kalia Vandever on trombone – horn players who don't push the album to large ensemble status, but who have this way of coloring in the sophisticated sentiments that Ross brings to his music – maybe much in the way that some of the key Bill Lee soundtracks can take other jazz players and use them to illuminate his ideas in really wonderful ways. The set also features Sean Mason on piano – an artist who's as careful in tone as Ross – plus Rick Rosato on bass, Craig Weinrib on drums, and guest flute on one track from Gabrielle Garo. Titles include "Guilt", "Choices", "The Impetus", "Doxology", "Benediction", and "Prayer" CD

Cal TjaderMonterey Concerts (Concert By The Sea Vols 1 & 2) ... LP
Prestige, 1959. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
The crashing waves of the Pacific coast hardly seem like the serene setting you might want for the vibes of Cal Tjader – but this album works surprisingly well, and offers up Cal's combo in a Monterey live date, before the jazz festival really got going strong! The group's one that matches his best early albums for Fantasy – piano from Lonnie Hewitt, soulful bass from Al McKibbon, and some great Latin percussion from Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo! Paul Horn also joins the group on flute – blowing with lyrical lines that fit the sound wonderfully, adding a whole new dimension to the music. Many tracks are longer than usual for the Fantasy years – and titles include "Walkin With Wally", "Doxy", "Round Midnight", "Tumbao", "Love Me Or Leave Me", "SS Groove", "Tu Crees Que", and "Afro Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

Phil Woods QuartetPhil Talks With Quill ... LP
Epic, 1957. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Rare as hens' teeth – and an incredible meeting of two vastly underrated alto talents! Phil Woods got plenty of opportunities to record as a leader in the 50s, but altoist Gene Quill was often buried in bigger groups – a fact that makes this album one of the few chances to really hear him shine! Woods and Quill work together beautifully throughout – playing boppishly, but also in a more relaxed groove – one that's a bit like Phil's excellent Warm Woods session for Epic from the same stretch, but perhaps a bit more upbeat overall. The twin-alto sound is really great – especially on the tunes that have them soaring together on the heads, then splitting off on solos with amazing dexterity and real dynamic range. Other players include Bob Corwin on piano, Sonny Dallas on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – and although the pair recorded an earlier session for RCA a few years before, this one's far superior! Titles include "Doxy", "Scrapple From the Apple", "Hymn For Kim", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 70s Japanese CBS/Sony pressing, ECPZ 1, with insert. Cover has light aging and bumped corners.)

✨✧ Clifford BrownNew Star On The Horizon ... LP
Blue Note, Early 50s. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime early work from Clifford Brown – one of his few sessions recorded for Blue Note, presented here in the years before the material was issued as a "memorial" after his early death! Gigi Gryce is in the sextet here with Clifford, playing both alto and flute, and bringing a real modern edge to the session – a style that makes great use of Brown's tone, and is a direction we would have liked to hear more of had he not been taken from us so early. Other players include John Lewis on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor, and Art Blakey on drums – and titles include "Wail Bait", "Minor Mood", "Hymn Of The Orient", and "Brownie Eyes"; plus an entire side of bonus tracks. ✨✧ Dexter GordonBoth Sides Of Midnight ... LP
Black Lion/ORG, 1967. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first great European statements from tenorist Dexter Gordon – a 1967 live recording that really lets Dexter stretch out, and show an even deeper side of his talents than on his 60s albums for Blue Note! The rhythm section here is rock solid – Kenny Drew on piano, Neils Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – a unit that still retains the sharpness of the Blue Note dates, but also has the energy to "go long" as Gordon pushes a few of the numbers on the set well past the ten minute mark. Gordon's solos are wonderfully imaginative and expressive – and titles include "Devilette", "For All We Know", "Doxy", and "Sonnymoon For Two". Material previously issued on LP under the title Montmartre Collection Vol 1. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jack MontroseArranged, Played, Composed By Jack Montrose With Bob Gordon ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the rare mid 50s treasures from the team of tenorist Jack Montrose and baritonist Bob Gordon – a great pairing from the LA scene of the mid century! Although both players were steeped in the sounds of their scene at the time, they also have a way of moving past cliche and common expectations – offering up music that's filled with surprise and delight, and which is always arranged with a great balance between tightness of execution and open personality of the players. Montrose arranged the album, and wrote a good number of the tunes – and other players include Paul Moer on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, and Bob Gordon on baritone – on titles that include "April's Fool", "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town", "A Little Duet", "The News & The Weather", "Dot's Groovy", "Cecilia", and "Paradox". ✨✧ McCoy TynerSama Layuca ... LP
Milestone, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite hip stuff from McTyner – really righteous sounds from his 70s run for Milestone Records, recorded with a great lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Gary Bartz on alto, Azar Lawrence on soprano and tenor sax, Bulster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on percussion! With players like that, it would be hard to miss – but McCoy's also not one to just let the cats do their own thing – as he directs the group with a sense of power and majesty that's really wonderful. Tyner spins out long dramatic lines in a post-Coltrane Impulse mode that's almost more like Alice Coltrane than his usual bag – and the horn solos of Bartz and Lawrence really give the set a crackling edge. Ttiles include "Paradox", "Desert Cry", "La Cubana", and "Sama Layuca". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousWonderful World Of Depressing Country Music – As Dug By Lux & Ivy & Gram ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of classic country that's got way more to offer than the "depressing" in the title might make you think – not tracks that are purposely over the top and full of bad feeling – but instead the kind of well-crafted work that makes postwar country some of the most carefully emotive music of the time! The set's overflowing with themes of love and loss, but handled with a mature, honest, very human approach – never wallowing too much in depression, and instead often coming across with a slightly redemptive spirit in the realization of the loss. The set features 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Letter Edged In Black" by Hank Snow, "Teardrops & Empty Arms" by Texas Ruby, "A Church A Courtroom & Then Goodbye" by Patsy Cline, "Lonely Street" by Don Gibson, "Call Of The Wedding" by Goldie Hill, "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight by George Jones, "Tramp On The Street" by Carlisle Brothers, "The Old Crossroad Is Waitin" by Rose Maddox, "Lonely Side Of Town" by Kitty Wells, "Are You Afraid To Die" by Stanley Brothers, and "I'm Reading Yaur Letter Again" by Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper. ✨✧ Charles MingusModern Jazz Symposium Of Music & Poetry ... LP
Bethlehem, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album – one of our favorite-ever records from Charles Mingus! The album was recorded in the same breath as his legendary works Tijuana Moods, The Clown, and Pithecanthropus Erectus – and it features the same sort of fire and emotion that made those classics so great. The group alone is amazing – with Horace Parlan on piano, Shafi Hadi on alto and tenor, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and the amazing Clarence (aka Gene) Shaw on trumpet – all getting plenty of room to open up on the album's longer tracks! The work bristles with a sense of imagination and dark energy that Mingus hardly had in his music in later years – and each new tune brings a fresh sense of vision that never fails to astound us! In keeping with the "poetry" title, the album begins with an incredible 12 minute track "Scenes in the City" – which features a long spoken bit written by Langston Hughes about one man's love of jazz and the way that it affects his life in the city – all supported with excellent instrumentation from the group. Other titles are instrumental, and include "Nouroog", "New York Sketchbook", "Slippers", and "Duke's Choice". LP, Vinyl record album
