Dave DouglasOvercome (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Greenleaf, 2022. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A set whose origin is partly hinted at by its title – as trumpeter Dave Douglas initially wanted to create a new interpolation of the classic anthem "We Shall Overcome" – then expanded on the energy of that collaboration to create a whole album in a similarly righteous style! The set features key vocal contributions from singers Camila Meza and Fay Victor – and Douglas' trumpet is balanced nicely with trombone from Ryan Keberle – as the players resonate with a the tones of a larger ensemble at moments, while still stepping forth individually too. Meza adds in guitar, and the rest of the group features Jorge Roeder on bass and Rudy Royston on drums – on titles that include "We Shall Overcome", "Good Trouble For John Lewis", "Peace", "When We Are Together Again", and "Perspective". Greenleaf, 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really beautiful project from trumpeter Dave Douglas – an artist who lately seems as if he's even better than usual when he's got a special idea behind a record! That's definitely the case here – as Douglas works with inspiration from a medieval mural in Ghent – used for both the secular and spiritual currents that run through the music in a beautiful way – with Dave's instrument blended with pump organ and prepared piano from Marta Warelis, guitars and lute from Frederik Leroux, and cello from Tomeka Reid – plus use of "serpent" and tuba by Berlinde Deman, who also vocalizes a bit next to Douglas. Lander Gyselinck moves between drums and electronics – the latter of which are used in nicely subtle ways – and titles include "Instrumental Angels", "Mercy", "Arrival", "Hermits & Pilgrims", "Righteous Judges", and "Ah Moon". Swajola, 2015. New Copy ... $13.99
Great later work from Larry Douglas – a trumpeter you may know for his self-released Bay Area album of the 80s, but who's still very much in fantastic form here – working alongside percussionist Jorge Pineda, in a smoking set of west coast Latin Jazz! The vibe is wonderful – that evolution of the Latin jazz mode that the west coast picked up strongly in the 80s, when NYC was more in a salsa mode – and Douglas and Pineda get help here from Steve Marshall and Michael Turre on saxes and flute, Rick Brown on trombone, and Roy Brown on piano – all stepping out on these great long tracks with plenty of solo space! Titles include great Latin jazz remakes of Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly" and the soul classic "People Make The World Go Round" – plus originals "Untitled", "Traces", "Illusions", "Jammin In The Boro", and "Just Like That". Swajola, 1984. New Copy ... $13.99
A rare bit of indie jazz from the Bay Area scene of the 80s – but put together with a groove that's much more 70s overall! The group's headed by trumpeter Larry Douglas, and has a soaring, soulful groove that definitely owes a lot to the spiritual sound on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz – but which is also served up here with a confident style of its own – a mode that's brimming over with smart ideas and great intentions – especially on some of the numbers that feature a larger lineup! In addition to Douglas on trumpet, flugelhorn, and piano – the set also features Ronald Wilson on tenor and baritone sax, David Masucci on flute, Ray Williams on Fender Rhodes, Eric Vaughn on piano, Marcos Torres on timbales and percussion, and Kamau Seitu on drums and congas. The album's a real lost charmer – with a vibe that we'd liken to some of the best projects from Earl & Carl Grubbs at times – and titles include "Dedications (The Theme)", "Untitled", "Jammin' At The Boro'", "Illusions", "Traces", and "Dedications (The Variation)". The one and only album from Douglas Fir – an obscure Northwest combo from the start of the 70s, but one who get some really top-shelf treatment on this album recorded for a small imprint of MGM! There's some surprisingly great larger arrangements at points – never too much, but just the right use of a bit of strings here, or a few horns there, to flesh out the spirit of the group's sound at the core – which is an often-melancholy mode that seems perfect for play on a rainy afternoon, where the swirling organ lines on some cuts ring out nicely, next to a few cuts that pick up a slight groove. Wadada Leo Smith/Douglas Ewart/Mike ReedSun Beans Of Shimmering Light ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... $8.99 14.00
Three giants of the Chicago improvised scene, coming together here in an album that recalls the best early recordings from the AACM! There's this open, collaborative spirit going on here – music that moves between structure and freedom, and which stands as a testament to the instant rapport between all three players – trumpet from Wadada Leo Smith, reeds from Douglas Ewart, and drums and percussion from Mike Reed – the last of whom often seems to let his elders set the tone, then find a way to make his own special contributions – at that level that continues to make Reed such a vital part of any group he engages with. Had Delmark issued this album in 1971, it would have gone on to become a classic – but it's an even greater feather in the cap of Astral Spirits – who do a great job here with presentation. Titles include "Super Moon Rising", "Unknown Forces", "Dark Tango", "Constellations & Conjunctional Spaces", and "Sun Beans Of Shimmering Light" CD

John ColtraneColtrane Time (Douglas Collection) ... LP
United Artists, 1958. Near Mint- ... $19.99
This is a repackaged version of an album that was originally issued under Cecil Taylor's name, under the title Hard Drive (and later Stereo Drive, or something like that). The record brings together two of the late 50's most promising modernists – Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane – in a group that includes Kenny Dorham, Chuck Israels, and Louis Hayes. The music is a startling mix of styles – as Taylor's heavy piano clashes noisily with Trane's free flowing lines on the tenor. It doesn't always work, but it's well worth a listen, and stands as a critical meeting of two important talents that were both best known on their own. Tracks include "Shifting Down", "Double Clutching", and "Just Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare live work from Billie Holiday – mostly from the early 50s, but not issued until a few years after her death – in a well-done package from United Artists! The tunes were mostly recorded under the supervision of Leonard Feather – and come from two different German tour dates – one with Carl Drinkard on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Elaine Leighton on drums – the other with a larger group that features Sonny Clark and Beryl Booker on piano, Red Norvo on vibes, Buddy DeFranco on clarinet, and Jimmy Raney on guitar! The second set features longer tracks with a bit more improvisation – a nice treasure from these key years of Billie – on titles that include "Lover Come Back To Me" and "Billie's Blues". The trio sides are a bit more straight, but still plenty great – with titles that include "Blue Moon", "All Of Me", "My Man", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "I Cried For You". LP, Vinyl record album

The first album by the second group to call themselves the Last Poets – and as fierce a document of their rich talents as you'll ever find – bursting forth with anger and righteousness at a level as tight as Gil Scott-Heron's first album! The group here is the key second lineup of the ensemble of wordsmiths – comprised of Abiodun Oyewole, Alafia Pudim, and Omar Ben Hassan, plus the percussionist Nilaja – and most cuts feature only spare percussion backing over the spoken protest poetry – delivered with a brutal edge that really sums up the righteous politics of the time. Titles include "Run, N*gger", "On The Subway", "When The Revolution Comes", "Jones Comin' Down", "Black Thighs", "N*ggers Are Scared Of Revolution", and "Wake Up, N*ggers" – all of which should give you a good picture of what's going on with the record! John McLaughlinDevotion ... LP
Douglas, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
An intensely jamming album from guitarist John McLaughlin – and a record that set a whole new tone for electric jazz in the 70s! The album was recorded shortly after McLaughlin's work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and Tony Williams on the first Emergency album – and in a way, it's a key piece of the jazz-rock fusion puzzle that has those two sets as cornerstones. McLaughlin's working here with keyboardist Larry Young from the Emergency group – playing both his usual organ on the record, plus a bit of electric piano – and the rest of the group includes bassist Billy Rich, plus superdrummer Buddy Miles – really giving a lot of power to the album's sound at the bottom! McLaughlin is getting into a bit of his mystic trip on the record, but is still playing with a lot of electric power here – plenty distorted and fuzzy on most numbers, and really jamming throughout! Titles include "Devotion", "Dragon Song", "Marbles", "Siren", "Don't Let The Dragon Eat Your Mother", and "Purpose Of When". LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie RouseCinnamon Flower ... LP
Douglas, 1977. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A great later effort from tenor sax giant Charlie Rouse – a record that's quite different than his 50s hardbop or his 60s modernist work with Thelonious Monk – but still pretty darn great in its own sort of way! The album features Rouse working with a larger ensemble in a batch of tracks that has a distinct Brazilian influence – not one from bossa nova, but from the more sophisticated Brazilian jazz modes of later years – particularly as the style started to pick up from some of the arranging modes used in MPB. The players here are all well-suited to the session – and include Clifford Adams on trombone, Claudio Roditi on trumpet, Dom Salvador on piano, Ted Dunbar on guitar, Amaury Tristao on acoustic guitar, Ron Carter on bass, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Wilbur Bascomb on bass – all working together in a style that's somewhat complicated, yet which has an open-ended flow, and a very joyous sensibility overall! Arrangements are by Dom Salvador and Amaury Tristao – and titles include Salvador's romping groover "On The Corner – a real jazz dance classic – plus "Sertao", "Desencontro", "Alvorada", "Natal No Interior", and "Cravo Canela". High Note, 2022. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
A host of great guitarists, all coming together to pay tribute to one of their own – the mighty Pat Martino, an artist on the strings from his early years in the 60s in organ combos, through his very creative 70s material, into a great run of albums in later years too! Pat's memory is in great company here – on tunes that have a nicely lean vibe, and really allow for plenty of space for guitar solos – sometimes with two artists in the lineup, shifting their sound nicely – sometimes just a single player on the cut, depending on the tune! Most tracks feature the same group on rhythm – Kevin Kozol on keyboards, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Allan Mednard on drums – and titles include "Inside Out" with Adam Rogers and Peter Bernstein, "Black Glass" with Kurt Rosenwinkel, "Line Games" with Fareed Haque, "Joyous Lake" with Nir Felder and Oz Noy, "Noshufuru" with Rez Abbasi and Jeff Miles, "Willow" with Ed Cherry and Sheryl Bailey, "Lament" with Russell Malone, "Country Road" with Jeff Harrison, and "On The Stairs" with Dave Stryker and Paul Bollenback. Eric AlexanderGentle Ballads 6 ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2022. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
A great installment in this long-running series from tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander – a player who also picks up a bit of alto on the record too! As with the previous volumes, this is way more than just a set of sleepy ballads – as the presentation is way more than "gentle", and the music moves with some nice currents of soul – thanks in part to superb accompaniment from John Di Martino on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums! Alexander approaches the tunes in ways that really echo his roots on the south side scene in Chicago – using them as bare frameworks, really – never losing the melody, but also really constructing his own songs as well – and reminding us again that he's one of the greatest mainstream saxophonists to come our way in recent decades. Titles include "Bright Moments", "Estate", "So In Love", "Moon & Sand", "Hush A Bye", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", and "Say It". CD

Blake's a drummer, but that's just part of his talents here – as the songs have a fresh crackle that links together older modes of jazz, particularly the creative spirit of Johnathan's home scene in Philly, with some of the bolder elements that have come into play with some of his up-and-coming contemporaries – featured here in a great quintet that includes Joel Ross on vibes, Immanuel Wilkins on alto, David Virelles on keyboards, and Dezron Douglas on bass. The great Louis Hayes has been giving us incredible records for decades – and this recent set still has the drummer very much at the top of his game – working with a soulful conception that few folks can match, and really getting the best out of the wonderful group he's got on the set! The lineup is fantastic – Steve Nelson on vibes, Abraham Burton on tenor, David Hazeltine on piano, and Dezron Douglas on bass – all artists we love in other settings, but who seem to sparkle even more strongly here under the guidance of Hayes! Camille Thurman sings on two cuts – "Where Are You" and "I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over" – but the real strength of the album comes from the many instrumental tracks, on titles that include "Crisis", "Arab Arab", "Desert Moonlight", "Creeping Crud", "Roses Poses", and "Oxygen". Irabbagast, 2012. Used ... $2.99
A great little album from talented tenorist Jon Irabagon – served up with a cover that's sort of a parody of a hip hop record – but delivered with a bold musical sound that's right up there with Jon's work in Mostly Other People Do The Killing! The tenor's really out front in most numbers – carving out a fresh space that changes throughout the set – sometimes spare and improvised, yet other times boldly swinging with lots of angular changes – setting fire to the group's lineup of trumpet, keyboards, bass, and drums. One track features a larger ensemble, and a few others feature guest players too – all integrated wonderfully into Irabagon's bold musical vision. The first installment in a series that we hope to hear from often in years to come – as it offers up new remixes of older African funk tracks from the 70s – but all in a way that crackles with the best contemporary energy of the London scene! Most of the material was issued in the original form by other album projects from the Africa Seven label – but the cuts here are completely changed up, and their original rhythms expanded in ways that really show a 21st Century level of complexity – and there's also a bit of added instrumentation too. A huge collection of cuts from a time when the UK scene was overflowing with influences from American soul – styles that you might know from some of the big crossover hits that charted on our side of the Atlantic – but which run much much deeper overall, as you'll hear in this stunning collection of hard-grooving cuts! The whole thing is a mix of mod rock styles with American soul, R&B, and jazz influences – plenty of heavy drums, organ solos, tenor lines, and raw vocals from a wide variety of artists – all of whom sound surprisingly great here together in the company of each other! Even if you think you know the UK scene from this period, you might still find plenty to discover here – in a set of 85 tracks by artists who include The Remo Four, The Action, Plastic Penny, The Ministry Of Sound, Fire, The Eyes, Koobas, The Voice, Drag Set, Terry Reid, The Birds, Linda Hoyle, Carl Douglas & The Stampede, Dr K's Blues Band, The Takers, Bo Street Runners, Zoot Money, Johnny & John, The Artwoods, Downliners Sect, Jimmy Royal & The Hawks, Ronnie Jones, The Fingers, Trendbender Band, The Scots Of St James, Colin Cook, The Favourite Sons, VIPs, Graham Bond, and even a young David Bowie. Rhythm & Blues (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A heady serving of instrumental soul tunes from the center of the 60s – work that really takes off from jazz and R&B modes from a few years before, and serves up music that reminds us that great soul sounds don't always need some lyrics in the lead! There's a nicely gritty vibe on most of these numbers – these cuts are from a time when the funky 45 was really coming into its own – and the double-length collection features a massive 60 cuts in all, from a wide variety of labels – titles that include "Never Make Your Baby Cry" by Johnny Talbot, "Slapstick" by Dino & The Dell Tones, "Good Grease" by Mark III Trio, "Ain't That Hateful" by Monk Higgins, "The Mustang" by Rudy Robinson, "Soul Roach" by Merle Saunders, "Soul Sister" by Four Gents, "Call Me" by Eddie Bishop, "Big Limas" by Cobra Kings, "Marr's Groove" by Hank Marr, "Right On" by Joe S Maxey, "Boss Bag" by Sammie John, "Haulin" by Shy Guy Douglas – and lots lots more! ✨✧ VariousKon & Amir – Off Track Vol 1 – The Bronx (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. Sealed 3LP ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest compilations we've heard in years – a treasure trove of rare grooves from legendary crate diggers Kon and Amir! The pair have been known for years from the massive beats in their On Track mixes, and from subsequent reissue singles – but this set has them moving firmly off track, for an even more obscure blend of tracks – all of which show us an even hipper side of the pair's tastes! Amir's selections here are especially great – a wealth of great jazz, Latin, and world-styled grooves – nearly all of which have never been reissued before. Kon's tracks are often a bit more clubby – and together with Amir's, they make for a wonderfully rounded compilation – one that cares little about its own premise or posturing, but works hard to put a wealth of under-discovered grooves on the market. Titles include "Esto Me Gusto" by Juan Demonio, "Tune For LN" by Larry Nozero, "Nestero Ti Patte" by Marius Cultier, "Holding On (Kon's edit)" by Darryl Douglas, "Destroy The Nihilist Picnic" by The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, "Soar" by Claudio Mederios, "Opiniao" by Zelia Barbosa, "Darling I Love You (Kon's edit)" by Jorge Santana, "When I Comes To Loving Me (Kon's edit)" by Executive Suite, "Steel City Disco (Kon's edit)" by Steel City Orchestra, "Country" by Adolphe Parillon, "Douga" by Quintette Guineenne, and "81" by Imp Express. VariousPied Piper Finale ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Rare soul from the Detroit underground of the 60s – all of it from the vaults of Pied Piper Productions – a fantastic company who flourished in the shadows of Motown! Pied Piper was headed by Motown percussionist Jack Ashford – who contributed to many better-known Detroit soul tracks of the period – and the music here draws on all the experience that Ashford had with that bigger label, and sometimes borrows a bit of Motown talent as well! Yet the music is also more in the indie mode, too – similar to excellent Detroit singles on imprints like Groovesville or D-Town, both of which would be good comparisons to the Pied Piper sound. Some tracks are instrumental, but the majority of the work is vocal – and features some top-shelf singers and groups – all documented in the wonderful notes in the package. You'll recognize a few of these tracks from titles that Pied Piper placed with bigger labels, but there's also some small imprint singles, and even some unreleased tracks as well – 24 titles that include "It Takes Two" by The Four Sonics, "No Baby" by The Metros, "Ease My Mind" by Lorraine Chandler, "I Can't Change" by Yvonne Baker & The Sensations, "I Like Your Style" by Freddy Butler, "Crazy Things" by Joseph Douglas, "I'd Like To Know" by The Pied Piper Players, "American Dollar" by Willie Kendrick, "It's Better" by Reggie Alexander, "Soul Superman" by The Hesitations, "She Don't Want You" by Lorraine Chandler, "We Go Together" by The Cavaliers, "That Girl Of Mine" by The Persians, "Deserted" by Freddy Butler, "I'm With You" by September Jones, "Sweetest One" by The Metros, and "Gambler's Blues" by Nancy Wilcox. Sharp tenor from the great JD Allen – a very striking set that's filled with all original compositions – work that really shows the way that Allen's grown strongly as both a writer and player in recent years! There's a sense of darkness to the record right from the start – a brooding intensity that finds a way to both move forward and fold back on itself – this kind of elliptical mode that's very compelling, and brought into strong focus by a quartet that features Eldar Djangirov on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Jonathan Barber on drums. Ace (UK), Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best collections of harmonica blues we've ever heard – a totally smoking set that focuses on the hippest material of the postwar years – filled with obscure tracks that go way past some of the overplayed tracks in the genre! Almost all the tunes here have the instrument blown boldly, and through a microphone with really great force – as you'd guess from the image on the cover – with a sound that's still pretty darn amazing all these many years later, as the instrument is taken from a rootsy role into a very powerful mode of expression during the years in which the electric guitar was also having a huge influence on the music too! Most of the numbers mix soulful vocals with searing harp blues solos – and titles include "A Fool No More" by Eddie Hope & Manish Boys, "Ride With Your Daddy Tonight" by Frank Frost, "Wine Women Whiskey" by Papa Lightfoot, "Walking By Myself" by Jimmy Rogers, "Chicago Breakdown" by Doctor Ross, "Up The River" by Cousin Leroy, "Steady" by Jerry McCain, "Monkey Doin Woman" by Shy Guy Douglas, "Western Union Man" by Chicago Sunny Boy, and "Boogie Twist" by Snooky Pryor. ✨✧ VariousNo Jive – Authentic Southern Country Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rootsy blues from the great Excello Records – most of it recorded not too far from the Tennessee city in which the label made its home! The southern scene in the 50s was going through plenty of changes – partly because of all the migration northwards that started during the wartime years, partly because of the way that radio and growing indie labels were helping criss-cross sounds and scenes through their musical efforts – with a huge run of changes that were taking place in the urban scene. Even out in the sticks, stronger use of the electric guitar really transformed rural blues – even in spare recording settings that might have mirrored blues records of the 20s and 30s – and the use of new ideas, new inflections, and new ways of putting over a tune are perfectly captured here in a batch of rare tracks done by the Excello label. Most of the cuts are super-rare singles, issued here with excellent sound – and there's a few other numbers on the set that are issued here for the first time ever – with great sound and excellent notes. Titles include "I'm Bad" by Good Rockin Bob, "No Jive" by Little Al, "Honey Babe" by Arthur Gunter, "The Natural Facts" by Leroy Campbell, "Wasted Time" by Shy Guy Douglas, "Dirty Britches" by The Leap Frogs, "Welcome Home Baby" by Slim Hunt, and "Quit My Drinkin" by Robert Garrett. ✨✧ OT SykesFirst Love ... CD
Fun City/Everland (Austria), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The only album we've ever seen from soul singer OT Sykes – and a set that's maybe got a greater depth than you'd guess from his image on the cover! The music is a mix of mellow numbers and 80s boogie grooves – but the presentation here is rich, but without having the too-polished mode of major label soul – maybe somewhere in Roy Ayers or Leroy Hutson territory, where Sykes can let the tunes flow in just the right sort of balance between warmer jazz and soul! The keyboards really sound great on the mellow steppers – which are our favorite numbers here – but even the groovers are way more than throwaway dance tracks – and have a positive vibe that's mighty nice. Arrangements are by Wayne Douglas Jr – who also had a hand in writing all the tracks on the album – and titles include "Loneliness Inside Of Me", "Come Be My Lady", "Licensed To Love", "Something's Burning", "You Bring Out The Best In Me", "Stone Crush On You", and "Can't Get Enough Of Your Lovin". The Impulse Records debut of Brandee Younger – an artist who's more than worthy of appearance on that legendary label! As with another famous Impulse musician, Alice Coltrane, Younger's main instrument here is the harp – but she uses the instrument in ways that are very much her own – very contemporary, and mixed with a blend of soulful and spiritual styles that really push the older legacy of the Impulse label forward in all the right ways! Most tracks are instrumental, and shift between acoustic and electric instrumentation in the mix – never on the harp, but on the bass – and on one track, Tarriona Tank Ball joins the group on vocals. Dezron Douglas produced the record, really bringing his strong ear for rhythms into play – and titles include "Tickled Pink", "Olivia Benson", "Somewhere Different", "Spirit U Will", "Reclamation", and "Beautiful Is Black". International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great idea for a record – and one that echoes the same "E & F" mode that Makaya McCraven brought to his previous album! The approach here is as unique as the drummer himself – in that McCraven went back to the sessions for the core album, and pulled out material that's recast into a completely different record altogether – not a remix project, or a batch of alternate takes – but new music from the ground up, as Makaya continues his groundbreaking style of using live jazz performance as the basis for a record that's eventually cut-up and reassembled! Performances were recorded in Chicago, Cali, Brooklyn, and London – with players who include Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Dezron Douglas on bass, Ashley Henry on Fender Rhodes, Nubya Garcia on tenor, Jeff Parker on guitar, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on violin, Carlos Nino on percussion, Junius Paul on bass, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor – an amazing lineup that gets plenty of space to shine in the hands of Makaya. Titles include "Everybody Coo", "Mak Attack", "The Hunt", "Beat Science", "Kings & Queens", "Traveling Space", "Butterss Fly", "Universal Beings Part 2", "Her Name", "Half Steppin", and "The Way Home". ✨✧ Roscoe MitchellLRG/The Maze/S II Examples ... CD
Nessa, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A crucial record from Roscoe Mitchell – a set that builds both on his important solo work, and his musical discoveries with the Art Ensemble of Chicago – but which also opens up the more sonic territory that would soon set Mitchell and a few other colleagues apart, and open up even more possibilities for experimentation in the AACM! The set begins with "LRG" – a trio piece with two key collaborators – George Lewis on trombones and sousaphone, and Leo Smith on trumpets – both working with Mitchell, who blows piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes – in these amazing ranges of sounds, tones, and shapes – almost a catalog of improvisational possibilities. "The Maze" is even more striking – less reed work, and instead a piece done for eight percussionists – with an unlikely lineup that features Anthony Braxton, Malachi Favors, Joseph Jarman, Douglas Ewart, Don Moye, Thurman Barker, Mitchell, and Henry Threadgill – in this moody, choppy piece that runs for twenty minutes. Last up is "S II Examples" – probably our favorite – as it's got Roscoe playing solo soprano in a long tone-oriented piece that sounds a lot more like some electronic instrument than it does a soprano sax – further proof that he was really doing tremendous things at the time! Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tony Davis is a jazz guitarist with a difference – an artist who's not out to revolutionize his instrument in jazz, but who still finds a way to play with a very distinct approach! Tony's quality isn't easy to put in words – he's not working the fret in a weird way, or using any sort of effects or gimmicks – but he does get a very specific sound out of the instrument, one that's full of shimmering colors and light – often quite chromatic, but usually with a dexterity that might match more sharper-toned musicians! Davis' sound springs into life from the very first note on the set – given nice direction from David Bryant on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Eric McPherson on drums – and the record also features work from Steve Wilson on flute and alto on two tracks, and Steve Davis on trombone on two as well. Alina Engibaryan sings on two of the album's tracks – "Lake Sebago" and "Orange Feathers", both originals by Davis – and other tunes include "Night Ride", "Braeburn", "El Gran Birane", "Hypnagogia", and a nice version of "Con Alma". A great little session from drummer Al Foster – a musician who's name doesn't always show up on records as a leader, but which always gets our attention when it does! And this time around, Foster definitely lives up to that attention – as he delivers a set that's crackling with tight, unusual rhythms – very much the sort that made him a player to watch right from the start, and which makes his role as a leader so compelling – especially when matched here by top-shelf work from Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Dayna Stephens on tenor, Adam Birnbaum on piano, and Doug Weiss on bass! Pelt and Stephens really bring out some unusual moments here – given great rhythmic inspiration by Al, who also contributed a number of wonderful tunes to the set too – sometimes short, sometimes long – really with a sense of variety that really matches his energy on the drums. ✨✧ Francisco Mora CatlettMora/Mora 2 ... CD
AACE/Far Out (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of great albums back to back – both rare albums from a percussionist who worked with Sun Ra! First up is Mora volume 1 – a legendary early set from percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett – and a really sublime blend of spiritual jazz and Latin rhythms! Mora's percussion is definitely at the core – but the set also features wonderful contributions from Vincent Bowens on tenor and soprano sax, Jerome LeDuff on berimbau, Alberto Nacif on quinto, and Detroit jazz legend Kenny Cox on piano! There's a balance here that really matches the best Strata East energy of the 70s – an open, flowing approach that's completely sublime, and very righteous too – even more so than anything Mora's done since the 70s – making this record one of his greatest achievements ever. Tersa Mora sings a bit of vocals at times – and titles include "Afra Jum", "Five AM", "Rumba Morena", "Samba De Amor", and "Cultural Warrior". Mora 2 is a set recorded in Detroit, but one that's got a globe's worth of elements in the mix – originally recorded in the mid 80s, but not released until a brief CD issue in the early part of the 21st Century! Despite that history, the album's a really timeless record that encompasses a world's worth of elements in jazz! Francisco Mora Catlett's at the height of his powers here – leading the group with a sense of righteous majesty that takes us back to some of the most ambitious heirs of the post-Coltrane generation, but with perhaps an oddly rhythmic twist as well – such as you might find in some of the 70s classics of Bobby Vince Paunetto. Echoes of Latin, Afro, and spiritual jazz come together as one – soaring to the skies on soulful waves of sound – brought together with a sense of focus and spirit that really moves us a lot. Players include Marcus Belgrave and John Douglass on trumpets, Sherman Mitchell on trombone, Vincent Bowens on tenor and flute, Alex Harding on baritone and bass clarinet, Kenny Cox on piano, and Rodney Whitaker on bass – and titles include "Samba/Conga De Amor", "Amazona Prelude/Dawn", "Old Man Joe", "Por Que Paro", and "Afra-Jum (parts 2 & 3)". David Axelrod produced the set – it was one of his early projects for Specialty Records – and Buddy Collette plays alto, tenor, and flute – in a group with Frank Rosolino on trombone, Howard Roberts on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Bill Richmond or Bill Douglass on drums. Red Callender joins in on some tracks, and his deep tones mixed with Rosolino's trombone, really help offset the lighter sounds of Collette's reeds in a nice way. An odd little album from tenorist Clifford Jordan – but a great one too, given the unique format! As the title implies, Cliff pays tribute to Leadbelly – handling a host of Huddie Ledbetter originals, but in a style that's kind of 60s soul jazz, with a bit of blues as well – one of those unusual criss-crossings of styles that you'd get on some of the Atlantic jazz sessions of the 60s. Jordan's tenor is firmly in the lead on all numbers – and other players include Roy Burrowes on trumpet, Cedar Walton on piano, Julian Priester on trombone, and Chuck Wayne on banjo instead of his usual guitar! Two tracks feature vocals by Sandra Douglass – and titles include "Dick's Holler", "Silver City Bound", "Black Girl", "De Gray Goose", "Yellow Gal", and "Black Betty". LP, Vinyl record album
