ManzelMidnight Theme – Unreleased LP ... CD
Dope Brother, Late 70s. New Copy ... $3.99 14.98
The never-before released full album from keyboardist Manzel Bush – the legendary 70s funk figure well-remembered for his classic break tracks! As a whole, the album's a masterpiece of spacey keyboards and funky drums – funkier than just about any other record we can think of from the late 70s! The set was put together by Manzel in collaboration with Kenny Dope, and many of the tracks feature new mixes by Kenny & The Undercover Brother – done in such a way that really respects the original grooves of the tunes, and which only sweetens them a bit in the right places, or brings out the funky drums even more. Every cut is a stone monster – and the quality of the set is amazing – with obscure cuts that sound every bit as wonderful as the more famous sample tracks like "Space Funk" or "Midnight Theme". 13 tracks in all, with titles that include "Jump Street", "Sugar Dreams", "Long Way Home", "Just For You", "It's Over Now", "The Party", "Vera Cruz", "Space Funk", "Midnight Theme", and "Evil Wicked Mean & Nasty". ✨✧ Lester BowieRope-A-Dope ... LP
Muse, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An expressive mid 70s effort from Art Ensemble co founder Lester Bowie, with a group that combines some folks from the St Louis scene with other AACM members Malachi Favors and Don Moye. The overall sound has more density, as there are more voices at play, with 2 drummers (Bobo Shaw joins Moye) and the addition of his brother's trombone and Raymond Cheng's violin, though there is the trio number "Mirage", along with the multilinear improvisation of "Tender Openings", the rootsy interpretation of "St Louis Blus" and cinematic "Rope A Dope". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a short click on the title track.)

✨✧ VariousDoors Of Perception – Dope Funk, Psychedelic Soul, & Acid Jazz From New York City 1970 to 74 ... CD
Sanctuary, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent dip into the wild catalog of Perception Records! The label was home to some of the most compelling soul and funk of the early 70s – and it operated in a boundary-less territory that mixed up fuzzy guitars with heavy beats with soaring sax and sweet harmony vocals. Some of the artists who recorded for the label are best known for their work there – like Black Ivory or Wanda Robinson – and others made rare sessions for Perception – like Dizzy Gillespie and Shirley Horn – that really stand out from the rest of their work! This 20 track set offers a perfect sampling of the work on the label – and it includes a wild variety of tracks like "Alive" by Larry Young, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The 8 Minutes, "Consequences Of A Drug Addict Role" by Shirley Horn, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Life Love & Peace" by The Exciters, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "Stop Me" by Benny Johnson, and the main theme to "Brother On The Run" by Johnny Pate & Adam Wade! ✨✧ George BensonTake Five (portrait cover) ... LP
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great 70s album by George Benson – and kind of a sleeper amidst the bigger hits of his CTI work! The record's a nicely stripped-down affair, with arrangements by Don Sebesky that don't ever really get in the way of Benson's guitar, and instead provid a perfect platform for him to lay down some wonderfully dark and chromatic chord changes. The set kicks off with a Phil Upchurch-conceived funky version of "Take Five", and Phil also contributed the funky number "Full Compass" to the record. The real standout, though, is George's own "My Latin Brother", a great Chicano funk number that's a perfect outing for Benson's dope guitar! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner, some edge wear, and lightly bent corners.)

Sweet funky soul from the great Willie Hutch – best known to most as the composer of the fantastic soundtracks for Foxy Brown and The Mack, but a heck of a great soul artist in his own right, with a wealth of great albums from the 70s! Willie's got a sweet raspy vocal style that's really great, and on many tracks, he plays some dope guitar, in the manner of Little Beaver on his slicker albums. Titles on this set include "Brothers Gonna Work It Out", "Get Ready For The Get Down", "If You Ain't Got No Money", "Sunshine Lady", "Theme Of Foxy Brown", "Party Down", "I'll Be There", "Slick", and "Love Power". 14 tracks in all! ✨✧ Isley Brothers3 + 3 ... LP
T Neck, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a stuck gatefold and some light staining & waviness.)

Lonnie Liston SmithRenaissance ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A massively sweet groover from Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes – smoother and warmer than some of his earlier albums, with a really soulful fusion vibe – and this perfect mix of jazz, funk, and soul that really takes Smith's music to a whole new level! Lonnie plays acoustic piano and "electric colorations" – working with a group that includes brother Donald on flute and vocals, Dave Hubbard on trumpet, and Leon Pendarvis on clavinet – and the whole thing's got a laidback, superdope feel that shows Smith at the top of his game – working earlier spiritual jazz currents into a tighter groove for the 70s, but never losing his soul at all! There's still a nice degree of spirituality to the set, and titles include "Renaissance", "Space Lady", "Between Here & There", "Mardis Gras", "Starlight & You", "Song Of Love", and "Mongotee". CD

A second chapter for boy band 80s soul! After Bobby Brown set off on his own, the remaining three members of New Edition decided to remain a group and give it a go, and far from being a sad collection of the leftover members, their debut album was actually one of many successful New Jack Swing efforts the group would produce! Given a helping hand from the Shocklee brothers on production, this set includes "Poison", "Do Me!", "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph & Johnny (Word To The Mutha!)", "She's Dope!", "BBD (I Thought It Was Me)?", "When Will I See You Again?" and "Ain't Nut'in Changed!"
