✨✧ Don PattersonHoliday Soul ... LP
Prestige, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A Holiday set so sweet, you'll be playing it all year long – as the record's got all the same soul jazz charms as the other Prestige Records albums from Hammond legend Don Patterson! True, the cover is red and green – and true, the songs are all Christmas numbers – but Don and the trio really take off on them, and create that wonderful interplay of grooves that makes their work so wonderful! Patterson handles the basslines with the pedals on the Hammond – alongside Pat Martino on guitar and Billy James on drums – who play with a wonderfully open flow that sets Don free with plenty of flights on the keyboard! Tracks are loose and groovy – and titles include "Merry Christmas Baby", "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", "Silent Night", "O Holy Night", and "Jingle Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby PattersonIt's Just A Matter Of Time (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Paula/Real Gone, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... On February 7, 2020
One of the best soul records to come out on the Paula label in the early 70s – one with a number of beautifully soulful moments – and a few surprisingly funky ones, too! Although Bobby did a lot of work for other singers, this is one of the few albums he actually cut under his own name – and it's a lasting testament to his talents as both a singer and writer. It's got a nice mix of southern soul ballads and more uptempo tracks, and loads of original compositions by Bobby! Includes "This Whole Funky World is a Ghetto", "If You Took A Survey", How Do You Spell Love", "Make Sure You Can Handle It", "I Just Loved You Because I Wanted To", "Right On Jody", "Quiet! Do Not Disturb", and "I Get My Groove From You". 7 bonus tracks on the CD edition: "She Don't Have To See You (To See Through You)", "It Takes Two To Do Wrong", "Take Time To Know The Truth", "I Get My Groove From You", "I'm In The Wrong" and more. ✨✧ Gene Ammons & Sonny StittBoss Tenors In Orbit! ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A studio album, but one that really has Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt recreating some of the bold energy of their live shows – coming across with a vibe that's much more Prestige Records than Verve, thanks to the presence of the Don Patterson trio on the set! Backing is by Don on Hammond, Paul Weeden on guitar, and Billy James on drums – a nicely loose combo that really lets the tenorists stretch out and show their stuff. The cuts are mostly standard material – "John Brown's Body", "Walkin", "Long Ago And Far Away" – but the twin-tenor sound is great, and Patterson's free organ lines riff away nicely! LP, Vinyl record album
(MGM pressing. Cover has a sticker remnant.)

Jukka Eskola Soul TrioSteamy ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
An excellent group, and one with a really great concept – a fresh take on a format that was big in the 60s soul jazz scene, but spun out in a very unique way – both in terms of instrumentation, and in terms of the groove! Trumpeter Jukka Eskola heads the trio, which also features Hammond from Mikko Heleva and drums from Toppo Makynen – a mode that was more famously used in tenor/organ combos, like the match of Don Patterson and Sonny Stitt on Prestige Records – but which has never been found in this format before! The trumpet turns out to be a great sound in the frontline, and is given some changed-up rhythms here to work with – not straight soul jazz or funk, and instead a mixture of complicated elements that move the tunes throughout a great range of grooves and colors – really showing all the wonderful sounds that Jukka's been capable of giving us over the years. Titles include "Stick Of A Branch", "Jongo Street", "Tiny B", "Old Stories", "Smash", "Five On Three", and "Steamy". CD

Alvin Queen & Lonnie SmithLenox & Seventh ... CD
Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... About February 19, 2020
A great lost chapter in the career of organist Lonnie Smith – a session recorded in the 80s, but done with the simple straightforward soul jazz groove of earlier sides on Muse and Prestige! Lonnie's working here in a loose and free trio format – with Melvin Sparks on guitar and the great Alvin Queen on drums – rolling out over longish tracks in an open-ended style that almost recalls more of the feel of Don Patterson's great organ trio sides than it does the heavier funk of Smith's early years. The recording quality is great – very faithful to the best tones of the Hammond – and titles include "Minor Chant", "LS Blues", "Slightly Monkish", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Oleo". CD

✨✧ Sonny StittLow Flame ... LP
Jazzland, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great laidback set of work from Sonny Stitt – one of his first dates with organ, in this case the sweet Hammond of Don Patterson! Patterson's group also features Billy James on drums and Paul Weeden on guitar – nice open players who hit the right sort of soulful vibe – while Sonny blows on both alto and tenor sax. The whole thing's got a great late nite vibe – and titles include "Low Flame", "Silly Billy", "Baby, Do You Ever Think Of Me", and "Donald Duck". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousTroubled Waters – Deep Soul From The Deep South ... CD
Grapevine (UK), 1970s. Used ... $13.99
A treasure trove of deep soul – featuring rare and unissued tracks by some of our favorite artists of the genre! The set goes way way past the usual collections of southern soul – to bring together obscure singles, album tracks, and rare vault material – going past the obvious mainstream of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, to include some totally incredible material! There's a very sophisticated vibe here overall – almost heading towards the mellow soul of the 70s north, but still recorded with an earthier quality that's steeped in traditions borrowed from gospel, and infused with the best that the secular south had to offer. An impeccable set throughout – as pleasing to any collector of rare soul as it is to a newcomer – with tracks that include "Warm Loving Man" by Carolyn Faye, "Two Wrongs Don't Make It Right" by Patterson Twins, "Troubled Waters" by Sam Dees, "If You See That Girl Of Mine" by Hank Sample, "The Town I Live In" by McKinley Mitchell, "When A Man Cries" by Joe Wilson, "A Quitter Never Wins" by Jimmy Dobbins, "Why Oh Why" by J Count Hughes, "I Won't Be The Last To Cry" by Eddie Houston, "Bluer Than Blue" by Ruby Wilson, and "I Believe In Love" by Billy Cee. 23 tracks in all – with great production and excellent notes! ✨✧ VariousLuxury Soul 2019 (3CD set) ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2019. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic assortment of contemporary soul – put together by one of the labels who kept the underground soul groove going, long before the generation of Neo Soul! Expansion Records is a London-based imprint who started out recording American soul artists from the 70s who were still going strong, but who were ignored by US labels in the 80s – then, as the years progressed, the label continued to find newer artists to work with too – at a level that made them one of the first companies to really push the idea of contemporary soul at a level that was far from the charts – which resulted in the kind of legacy that makes this 3CD set such a treasure. Most of the cuts here are from recent Expansion projects, and the set also includes gems from other sources too – and some classic cuts from their older catalog – all wrapped together in a great package for the price. Titles include "Falling Back Into Love" by Marc Evans, "Pressure" by Maysa, "Hopping Skipping So In Love" by Victor Haynes, "I Want Your Love" by One Way, "My Baby" by Ronnie McNeir, "I Want You Back" by Boogie Back with Cheri Maree, "I'll Always Love You" by Rockie Robbins, "Stay Away From You" by Chris Ballin, "Drifting" by Kim Tibbs, "So Nobody Else Can Hear" by Jimmy Cobb, "Are You Using Me" by Inner Shade, "Much Love" by Euge Groove with Rahsaan Patterson, "Stronger" by Nickee B, "Don't Judge Me (mellow mix)" by Phillip Leo, "Special Day" by Natasha Watts, "No Explanation" by Christ Standring with Mica Paris, "Secret Lover" by Saskia, "I Want Your Lovin" by Zed Soul with Rose Vincent, "Last Song" by Darien Dean with Tiffany T'Zelle, "Free To Be Me" by Lindsey Weber with Norman Brown, "Dangerous Romance" by Steve Nichol with Ellene Masre, and "Standing Ovation" by Blu Mitchell. 35 tracks on 3CDs! ✨✧ Ed CherrySoul Tree ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Titles include "Central Park West", "A New Blue", "Rachel's Step", "Ode To Angela", "Little Sunflower", "Little Girl Big Girl", and "Peace". CD

✨✧ Jared GoldReemergence ... CD
Strikezone, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Contemporary Hammond giant Jared Gold hardly needs to reemerge – as all of his albums in recent years have been completely top-shelf – and have really marked the musician as one of the best jazz organ talents around! Here, Gold certain reaffirms that reputation – working with amazing deftness that calls to mind the quick changes on the keys that Don Patterson brought to jazz organ work in the late 60s, mixed maybe with a bit of the soaring flow of Larry Young at the same time! The trio is super-tight too – and features the great Billy Hart on drums, and frequent partner Dave Stryker on guitar – plus guest trumpet work from Jeremy Pelt on three tracks, really giving the album a great layer of color with his tone. Titles include "Lookin For Another Pure Love", "One For John A", "She's Leaving Home", "Nomad", "Blues Connotation", "Reemergence", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". CD

✨✧ Sonny StittDeuces Wild ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great little Sonny Stitt album – very different than any of his other sets from the 60s! The album has a number of interesting aspects – from hard-wailing organ by Wilmer Mosby (who we think is Don Patterson under a fake name), to some screaming guest work by Rufus Harley and Robin Kenyatta. Sonny and Kenyatta sound especially great together, and on the track "In The Bag" Stitt's alto blends right in with Kenyattas, for an hard-wailing sound that's enough to shatter your windows, glasses, and contact lenses. Harley's work is equally great on the cut "Pipin The Blues", and with Sitt playing the sax parts, Rufus is free to really work those jazz bagpipes! Other tracks include "Deuces Wild", "Blues Ahead", and "Sittin In With Stitt". LP, Vinyl record album
