✨✧ Angela JohnsonThey Don't Know ... CD
Purpose, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The singer of Cooley's Hot Box breaks out on her own! Angela wrote, arranged, and produced most of this debut album – and she's stepping out as a strong soul singer with a wealth of talents only hinted at in previous projects. Of course, in most of that work, Angela's been more in the background – providing vocals on songs by other producers, or singing lyrics on club tracks. But here, she's fully in the light – singing with a warmth that we've never heard before, and stepping easily between styles to build a really consistent album. Titles include "Sad Days", "No Better Love", "Crying Over U", "They Don't Know", "Rescue Me", "Won't Say Sorry", "Don't Wanna Be The One", and "Kissing You". CD

Purpose, 2012. Used ... $5.99 7.99
A joyous celebration of Angela Johnson's first decade in soul music – and a smoking little set that revisits some of her best tracks from the time, and sets them on fire all over again! The package is way more than just a batch of remixes – a lots of tracks here are re-thought from the ground up, and re-fitted with a set of new sounds and styles that really illustrate Angela's growth as an artist over time – and the broad, collaborative reach she's had in the contemporary underground! Titles include "Hurts Like Hell (Makoto rmx)", "All In Me (Yannis rmx)", "You're Here With Me (MasSheen rmx)", "Wait 4 U (Josh Milan rmx)", "Rescue Me (Blu-Swing rmx)", "All I Need (Crank Brothers rmx)", "Better (Micky More rmx)", "Be Myself (Kemit & Jalon rmx)", "They Don't Know (Angela Johnson rmx)", and the great new track "Don't Take It Out On Me". ✨✧ Budd JohnsonStanley Dance Sessions – Blues A La Mode (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Felsted/Lonehill (Spain), 1958/1967. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A nicely packaged version of Budd Johnson's album Blues Ala Mode – a fantastically hard-blowing album from the tenorist – and one of the few jazz sides recorded for the short-lived Felsted label in the 50s! Budd blows hard Texas tenor in a really gutbuckety way – evoking a variety of jazz traditions within a single solo, but always heading back to the swinging territory that was most comfortable space. The lineup on the set is great too – and features Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Ray Bryant or Bert Keys on piano, Jo Jones on drums, and a bit of added baritone from the great Al Sears! Tracks are all quite long, with lots of room for solos, and Budd plays in perfect form – and in a much more stable way than on his later Argo recordings! Titles include "Used Blues", "Blues By Five", "Foggy Nights", and "Destination Blues". The CD expands the original album with 4 bonus tracks that feature Budd in quartet led by Earl Hines, recorded in 1967 – blowing tenor and soprano on tunes that include "Changin The Blues", "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone", "Summertime", and "Louisiana". ✨✧ JJ Johnson/Kai Winding/Bennie GreenTrombone By Three ... LP
Prestige, 1949/1950/1951. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A classic early album on Prestige – and one that features some heavy bop sessions cut for early 78s, all nicely packaged in a great cover by the famous Mad Magazine cartoonist Don Martin! The lineup here is great, and lives up to the title – as the set features work by three of the most important postwar trombonists in jazz! JJ Johnson leads a group with Sonny Rollins on tenor and Kenny Dorham on trumpet – on titles that include "Hilo", "Opus V", "Fox Hunt", and "Elysses". The great Bennie Green blows at the lead of a cool combo that has two tenors – Eddie Lockjaw Davis and the legendary Big Nick Nicholas – on titles that include "Green Junction", "Flowing River", and "Whirl A Licks". Last up is Kai Winding – with a deeper combo than usual, thanks to work from Brew Moore on tenor, Gerry Mulligan on baritone, and George Wallington on piano – on titles that include "Waterworks", "Sid's Bounce", and "A Night On Bop Mountain". Stax/BGP (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A smoking funky set from early 70s Stax Records – the only album we've ever seen from Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers, and a stone cooker all the way through! The sound is hard and heavy on most numbers – with loads of funky 45-styled riffs – and the core group is a nicely self-contained unit, with a lot of focus on the rhythm section – but they also get some great help here from the Memphis Horns, who blow over the top beautifully, and add a nicely soulful vibe to the record! Drums are nice and hard – and titles include the killer "The Dryer (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Razorback Circus", "Robot", "Midnight At Riley's", "Don't Tell Me Nothing About My Woman", "Patch It Up", and "I'll Be Your Doctor Man". CTI/A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $18.99
Very groovy stuff – the familiar pairing of trombone giants JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, but set up in a sweet style that really echoes the glory of the early sound of CTI! The album's a mellow mix of jazz and easy – with larger arrangements by Kai, JJ, and Don Sebesky – all exploring the more spacious side of things, as either of the main players solo over the top on trombone. The style's a great one to breathe new life into the team – and is even more wonderful if you dig the early CTI sound from their A&M years! Titles include "Israel", "Catherine's Theme", "Django", "Never My Love", and "Am I Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JJ Johnson & Kai WindingJay & Kai + 6 ... LP
Columbia, 1956. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the flashiest Columbia sessions from the team of Kai Winding and JJ Johnson – but also one of the best! The record almost borders on gimmicky – with an 8-piece trombone section, and use of the unusual trombonium instrument – but thanks to some deft arranging, the sound is relatively tight without being goofy – and the pair manage to push the use of the trombone in jazz to new levels without resorting to silly tricks, as on Hi Fi albums of the period. Other trombonists include Urbie Green, Eddie Bert, and Jimmy Cleveland – and titles include "Rise N Shine", "Night In Tunisia", "No Moon At All", "Jeanne", "You're My Thrill", "Four Plus Four", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Hallmark (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early Detroit soul – by the great Marv Johnson, one of the first talents to be supervised by a young Berry Gordy! In fact, it could be said that everything Berry put into his work with Marv led to the formation of Motown – as Marv's mixture of smooth vocals and swinging soul really prefaces a lot of the work to come out of the motor city during the 60s, no surprise, since he's got some of the Motown crew writing songs for him! This set features a mix of standards, plus some better originals including "September In the Rain", "You Got What It Takes", "Summertime", "Come To Me", "Let Me Love You", "I'm Coming Home" and "Don't Leave Me". ✨✧ JJ Johnson, Howard McGhee, Max Roach, & OthersTribute To Charlie Parker – From The Newport Jazz Festival ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful bit of hardbop that often gets overlooked because of the "leaderless" quality of the session. One batch of tracks on the record has Jackie McLean playing some beautiful rough interpretations of Bird on the standards "Old Folks" and "Embraceable You". The other batch was recorded live at Newport, and features Max Roach leading a sextet with JJ Johnson, Howard McGhee, Sonny Stitt, and Harold Mabern, on "Buzzy", "Now's The Time", and "Wee". The album's worth the price for the playing of Stitt and McLean alone – who both fall into the Parker-ish groove that they were once haunted with, but which here gives them a chance to show how individual they are. Nice stuff, and a record we almost passed by years ago. Don't make the same mistake. CD

✨✧ Townes Van ZandtDown Home & Abroad – Live In Johnson City, Tennessee/Live In Helsinki, Finland ... CD
Floating World (UK), 1985/1993. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two great live sets from the Townes Van Zandt – back to back in a single collection! The first CD features a beautiful intimate performance in Johnson City – a small spot in Tennessee that was crucial to the early years of country music recording, which seems to echo here in the timeless style that Townes uses for his music – very personal delivery of classic material, in ways that make these concert performances a nice change from the studio takes. CD2 features a 1993 concert in Finland – recorded with a bit more sense of presence in the way that both the guitar and vocals come across – which makes for a nice contrast with the first, given that both concerts share some of the same tunes. Titles include "Pancho & Lefty", "Dollar Bill Blues", "The Cuckoo", "Nothin", "Rex's Blues", "Snowin On Raton", "Don't You Take It Too Bad", "Flyin Shoes", "Tecumseh Valley", "Pinball Machine", "Rake", "Talkin Thunderbird Blues", and "No Place To Fall". ✨✧ Mose AllisonI Don't Worry About A Thing ... LP
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Early Atlantic Records work from the great Mose Allison – easily one of the most unique jazz artists of his time! Most started out as a pianist with a nicely bluesy vibe, but soon added in this excellent vocal approach that was maybe part New Orleans, part New York hipster – delivered here with a vibe that follows nicely from his earlier recordings for Columbia and Prestige Records! The sound is nice and stripped-down – none of the larger arrangements that Mose would soon use on Atlantic – and the set features accompaniment from Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. Titles include the classic "Your Mind Is On Vacation" – plus "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place", and "The Song Is Ended". ✨✧ Mose AllisonI Don't Worry About A Thing/Moses Alive ... CD
Collectables/Atlantic, 1962/1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 Atlantic sessions from Mose – back to back on one CD! I Don't Worry is one of Mose's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set follows nicely from Mose's earlier work for Prestige and Columbia – with Mose on piano, plus Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. The set features 10 tracks in all – including "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended". As you'd guess by the title, Mose Alive is recorded live, with a bit more of a hip flair than some of his earlier work for Prestige and Columbia, but still with those great vocals that went onto influence a generation of beatnik jazz singers. Mose has more than a bit of New Orleans in his tone – but he's also got some northern distance from his material, bringing a nice bit of wit into the recordings. There's a total of 11 tracks including "Parchman Farm", "Smashed", "Seventh Son", "Fool's Paradise", "Baby Please Don't Go", and "The Chaser". CD

✨✧ JJ JohnsonMad Be Bop ... LP
Savoy, 1946/1947/1949/1954. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A huge batch of work from the great JJ Johnson – material that includes 14 tracks recorded for Savoy as singles in the late 40s – plus the full Jay & Kai 10" album from 1954! The singles were all recorded in 1946, 1947, and 1949 – and they already mark Johnson as one of the most inventive trombonists of his generation – a player working with none of the hoke of earlier eras, and with a clean, modern sound that's almost like that of a bop trumpet at times. Players on these dates include Cecil Payne or Leo Parker on baritone sax, Bud Powell or Hank Jones on piano, Sonny Rollins on tenor, and Max Roach on drums – and titles include "Coppin The Bop", "Jay Jay", "Mad Bebop", "Jay Bird", "Boneology", "Down Vernon's Alley", "Riffette", "Yesterdays", "Audobahn", "Don't Blame Me", and "Goof Square", several with multiple takes. The remaining 8 tracks on the CD are from a 1954 10" album – titled Jay & Kai, with a lineup that's a bit different than the full Savoy album of that name. The core group here is quite unusual – as it features Johnson and Kai Winding as twin-trombone co-leaders, plus Charles Mingus on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums – with either Billy Bauer on guitar on 4 tracks, and Wally Cirillo on piano on 4 others. The use of guitar without piano is especially inventive, and really highlights the modern inflections of the two trombonists – and titles include "Blues For Trombones", "Lament", "The Major", "Reflections", "Coop", and "Blues In Twos". ✨✧ Art BlakeyButtercorn Lady (UHQCD pressing) ... CD
Limelight/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
An unusual little record from Art Blakey – a live set recorded at the Lighthouse in 1966, with a band that includes the surprising lineup of Keith Jarrett on piano and Chuck Mangione on trumpet! If you're surprised at the mix of players, and figure that they won't groove with Blakey's soulful approach – don't worry, as Art's still strongly at the helm, and manages to get incredibly tight performances out of both of them – really forging them strongly into a Jazz Messengers groove! The group also features Frank Mitchell on tenor and Reggie Johnson on bass – and Mangione wrote a number of the tracks for the album, including "Buttercorn Lady", a nice funky soul jazz groover, "Recuerdo", with a bit of a Latin feel, and "Between Races", a charger in typical Jazz Messengers style! ✨✧ James CottonBuddah Blues – Live & On The Move/High Energy/100% Cotton ... CD
Buddah/Floating World (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99 19.99
Three Buddah Records albums from James Cotton – all served up here in a single set! First up is Live & On The Move – a freewheeling double live set from the great James Cotton – and a record that may well be one of his fiercest of the 70s! James is a monster on both harmonica and guitar right from the very first note – and he's given some really kickass backings from a combo that features some occasional funky drum work from Ken Johnson, plus great lead guitar from Mat Guitar Murphy, and saxophone work from George Gregory. Titles include "One More Mile", "All Walks Of Life", "Boogie Thing", "Teeny Weeny Bit", "Hot N Cold", "Next Time You See Me", "How Can A Fool Go Wrong", "Born In Missouri", and "I Don't Know". On High Energy, there's a very cool New Orleans current – thanks in part to arrangements from Crescent City soul maestro Wardell Quezergue – who creates some great funky moments on the set! Cotton's always been equal parts blues and soul – and the latter really comes to the forefront here, as he blows harmonica and sings with a raspy style that's right in the Nola groove you could hope for – a quality that's emphasized by the production from Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint! Some New Orleans players are in the lineup, but the great Mat Murphy's still backing James on guitar – on cuts that include "Hot N Cold", "Chicken Heads", "Keep Cooking Mama", "Fannie Mae", "Weather Report", "I Got A Feeling", and "James' Theme". 100% Cotton is one of those key 70s records that helped harpman James Cotton really take the Chicago sound to the masses – a set that's romping, tight, and filled with the kind of soul-drenched arrangements that James always did so well! As with many of his classics, the mighty Mat Guitar Murphy is on board on guitar, and also helping with some of the arrangements too – which helps the group update a few older classics with a sweet electric blues groove – next to great new material by Cotton! Titles include "Burner", "I Don't Know", "Fatuation", "Creeper Creeps Again", "One More Mile", "All Walks Of Life", and "Boogie Thing". CD

A warm and wonderful 60s session from Lionel Hampton – recorded in a personal and intimate way, one that even surpasses his great small combo sides of the 50s! There's a relaxed feel here that you don't always get with Hamp – a gently grooving quality that we really like a lot, and which is traditional, but never too staid or too "easy" in its choices. The set benefits from some really strong horn work from Clark Terry on trumpet and Ben Webster on tenor – the latter of whom really crackles out with a great sound here. Other players include Milt Hinton on bass, Hank Jones on piano, and Osie Johnson on drums – and there's also a very slight bit of vocalizing on the record as well. A rare and exceptional vocal jazz LP – cut by the obscure Marilyn Moore, then the wife of Al Cohn – who's pictured in profile on the cover of the record! Marilyn's got a style that's somewhat raspy – clearly inspired by Billie Holiday at times, and not what you'd expect in comparison to some of the cooler, clearer female singers who worked on Bethlehem in the 50s. The backing is in a small group mode – with Cohn on tenor and bass clarinet, plus Don Abney on piano, Joe Wilder on trumpet, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – all in a nicely relaxed mode to fit the mellow, moody sound of the record. There's a nice sense of darkness throughout – a bit more edge than you might expect – and titles include "Trouble Is A Man", "Ill Wind", "Born To Blow The Blues", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "You're Driving Me Crazy". An understated gem from Gerry Mulligan – one of his first in a run of extremely charming sessions from the early 60s! The album has Gerry blowing in a format that's similar to 50s sides – a quartet with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – but the overall sound is somehow a bit looser and more relaxed than the Mulligan of old – a more gently playful feel that seems to stem from some of Brookmeyer's own experiments of the time, and which has Gerry blowing with a tightness and punch we really like. SkatalitesIndependence Ska & The Far East Sound – Original Ska Sounds From The Skatalites 1963 to 1965 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 22.99
Original ska sounds from the originators themselves – 20 incredible numbers by the Skatalites & friends – with many of their most essential recordings, and rare stunners, to boot! The period in focus here is the initial few years of The Skatalites as a bonafide band, but the principal players – including Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Lester Sterling, Jackie Mittoo and other legendary names – had been honing their craft together for years, backing a who's who of Jamiacan musical heavies from calypso, to mento, to jazz and beyond. No wonder they burst out of the gate with some of the tightest rhythms in the music history, but it's stunning to this day! Really one of the finest Soul Jazz compilations in years, with a wealth of great notes, too! A tight swinger from Sonny Stitt – one of the standout 60s dates he recorded for the Impulse label, a place where he seemed to get even more care and focus in the studio! The record's got all the soulful swing of Stitt's classics for Roost, but also hits a slightly more lyrical groove at times too – and backing is by a trio that features Hank Jones on piano, Al Lucas on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums. Stitt himself plays a bit of alto alongside his tenor – and titles include "Lester Leaps In", "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone", "Estralita", "My Mother's Eyes", "Never Sh!", "Touchy", and "Surfin". Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
A lost southern soul album from the 70s – recorded down at Muscle Shoals by singer Sandra Wright, and originally intended for release on Stax Records – but never issued at the time! Sandra's a great singer – deep soul, but with a touch of class, too – and the approach here shows that maturing Muscle Shoals sound, recorded at the Broadway Studio by David Johnson – at a level that's a bit in the Ann Sexton side of the spectrum – a sparkling, sophisticated feel that almost reminds us of the best female soul coming from Detroit or Chicago at the time, but with a slightly deeper range. Stax issued a few singles, but never issued the full album – which makes this one even more of a treasure for collectors of that time! Titles include "Wounded Woman", "The Sha-La Bandit", "Midnight Affair", "I Come Running Back", "I'm Not Strong Enough To Love You Again", "Please Don't Say Goodbye", and "A Man Can't Be A Man". A funky little collection, and one that's got way more going on than just the blues 45s mentioned in the title – as the cuts here include some great instrumentals and soulful work as well! We loved the previous volumes in this series, and this one is every bit as smoking – a mix of cuts we never would have put together ourselves, and which sound stunningly great together – pulled from a time when the worlds of blues, funk, and soul weren't as separate as they became in later years – when fans of a funky 45 would just reach out for anything that was good, greasy, and gritty. Titles include "Harmonica Boogie" by The Confiners, "Hotel Blues" by Eddie Boyd, "For Liz" by Andrew Brown, "All Nite (part 2)" by Big Eddie C Campbell, "You Better Cut That Out" by Eddie Burns, "Sting Ray" by Mack Johnson, "Sunny Side Of Love" by Raful Neal, "Down In The Chile" by The Wild Child, "Rock" by Chuck Higgins, "67 Blues" by Little Willie Pollard, and "You Don't Believe A Word I Say" by Big Daddy Simpson. Marvin Marvin Marvin – just when we thought you couldn't impress us any more, you took it to the next level! Trouble Man is a heck of a wonderful surprise from an artist that most folks really only knew as a singer – a fantastically funky blacksploitation soundtrack, conceived and composed by Marvin himself – and served up with some occasional vocals that work beautifully with the album's cool instrumental grooves! The set's easily one of Gaye's most righteous records ever – almost a second chapter to What's Going On, but more instrumental – and like that classic set, it really shows the whole new range of vision that Marvin was able to work in the studio. Gaye gets a bit of arranging help on some tracks from Gene Page and JJ Johnson – and the album's filled with great cuts – including the landmark "T Plays It Cool", plus other gems like "Don't Mess With Mister T", "Main Theme From Trouble Man", "The Break In", and "T Stands For Trouble". Very funky, very sophisticated, and very soulful! LP, Vinyl record album

Really standout material from Lucky – an excellent set collecting small group sessions recorded for Paramount in the mid 50s, featuring Oscar Pettiford on bass! The format's a bit like the small combo mode that Americans from larger touring ensembles were recording in Europe – a bit more laidback, and with more solo focus for players who were sometimes eclipsed in larger groups. There are 2 sides with Lucky playing in a quintet format, the first with Hank Jones, Pettiford, and Osie Johnson in the rhythm section – plus Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, and the second subbing Don Abney for Hank Jones. The real treat here though are the 2 sides of trio material, which feature Lucky, Oscar, and the guitar of Skeeter Best – setting up a spare, drum-less sound that really lets Lucky open up like we've never heard before. Big Top Records may not be as well-remembered as other key indies from the early soul years, but back at the start of the 60s the company was really hitting on all burners – with a top-shelf blend of rock, soul, and R&B! This package takes a nice dip into the best Big Top singles from the label's run – a key batch of work that really helped define not only the Brill Building sound of the time, but also set the scene for the uptown soul style that would mark so many New York classics of the 60s. And although Big Top handled a few pop acts, this package is really more skewed to soul than any other style – as even some of the rocking tunes have a colorblind quality that makes them cross over nicely. 26 tracks in all – with titles that include "Flashback" by The VIPs, "Sun Glasses" by The Shades, "He Knows I Love Him Too Much" by Arlene Smith, "Steady Kind" by Mickey Denton, "Misery" by The Dynamics, "The Fool" by Jamie Coe, "What's Your Name" by Don & Juan, "The Snake" by Maximillian, "Lavender Blue" by Sammy Turner, "Air Mail Special Delivery" by Karen Lake, "Always Something There To Remind Me" by Lou Johnson, and "Lipstick & High Heel Shoes" by Valentine & The Sweethearts. Not the complete Detroit soul story, but a set that's even more interesting than that – as the huge package looks at a wealth of lesser-known tracks from the farther reaches of the scene – mostly with a focus on the kinds of underground 60s cuts that made the Motor City so great! A good deal of the work here is from the labels of producer Robert West – who's probably best known for the Lu-Pine label singles, but also worked with other imprints too – a number of which are included here in a package that goes out of its way to present tracks that go way past the usual Motown-styled modes! There's a good deal of group soul work here, and many of the numbers are from the earlier part of the decade, and show a soul scene that still had plenty of grit, despite the later famous Detroit production policy. Also, many of the tracks are presented in a way that features two tracks or more by a single artist in a row – as if you're flipping over both sides of a single – and the box has a huge booklet that really details all the music too! There's 86 tracks in all – including some unissued numbers from the 60s – and the package features work by Ed Robinson, Sax Kari, The Conquerors, The Falcons, Marv Johnson, Tornados, Delores Maxwell, Don Juan & The Vulcans, The Minor Chords, The Rayber Voices, The Knight Hawks, The Fourmost, The Corvells, Gene Martin, Mack Rice, Eddie Floyd, Betty Lavette, Tina Marvel, Just Brothers, Eddie King, The Precisions, Tony & Tyrone, and many others! That's a young Isaac Hayes on the cover, sitting at the piano next to David Porter – his key songwriting partner at Stax Records in the 60s – at a time before both artists had gone onto their own solo recordings for the label! The Hayes/Porter team gave Stax some of their best songs during the second half of the 60s – often numbers that have a hip, hard-grooving style that really pushed the boundaries of Memphis soul – and as you'll hear here, the duo's work was not just recorded for their main label, but also handled by a wealth of other artists too – mostly soul singers of the late 60s, but also featured here on a few later tracks as well. Those later cuts are ever bit as soulful as the 60s material that makes up most of the collection – and the package also features some unissued numbers too –served up here in a list of 24 titles that include "Can't Trust Your Neighbor" by Freddie King, "60 Minutes Of Your Love" by Homer Banks, "I'll Understand" by Edwin Starr & Blinky, "Left Over Love" by Ruby Johnson, "Hold On I'm Coming" by The Righteous Brothers, "You Got Me Hummin" by The Hassles, "I'm Dedicating My Life" by Danny White, "Love Is After Me" by Charlie Rich, "Your Good Thing" by Mable John, "You Don't Know Like I Know" by Keith Powell & Billie Davis, "Wrap It Up" by Archie Bell & The Drells, "Baby" by Rachel Sweet, "As Long As I've Got You" by The Emotions, "I Take What I Want" by The Bishops, "The Sweeter He Is (parts 1 & 2)" by Soul Children, and an unreleased alternate of "Toe Hold" by Johnnie Taylor. Blue Note, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
We think this guy's one of the best new jazz vocalist to emerge over the past decade, and this album – his 4th for Blue Note – is far and away his best! The album was recorded live at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub – with nice small combo backing by Laurence Hobgood, Rob Amster, and Michael Raynor, plus guest horn work by Von Freeman, Eddie Johnson, and Ed Peterson. Kahil El'Zabar also plays percussion, and Jon Hendricks joins in on vocals a bit. But the best part is Elling's voice – which is a sweet mix between Mark Murphy at his best, and earlier vocalese masters, like Hendricks or Joe Lee Wilson. The album features mostly straight-ahead jazz vocalizing – with little of the hipster monologues that have ruined other Elling albums – and it includes an incredible version of Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer", plus the cuts "Oh My God", "Esperanto", "My Foolish Heart", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and the King Pleasure classic "Don't Get Scared". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins Vol 2 ... LP
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
As classic as it comes for late 50s Blue Note – and a key meeting between Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk! The group on the set features Rollins and Monk with JJ Johnson, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey – all of whom push things more in the direction of Blue Note's sound of the time, then Monk's own recordings of the period for Riverside. But the contrast of modes makes for a really startling sound – one that has Monk "monking" it up next to the straighter rhythm section, and bringing out some more modern tones in Rollins' tenor work. Horace Silver plays piano on part of the set as well – but still keeps things strong – and titles include "Why Don't I", "Wail March", "Misterioso", and "Reflections". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Buddy Tate & Claude HopkinsBuddy & Claude (Yes Indeed/Tate-A-Tate) ... CD
Prestige, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 great sessions pulled from the Swingville catalog of Prestige Records – both of which feature heavy tenor sax from the great Buddy Tate! Yes Indeed was issued under the leadership of pianist Claude Hopkins – and although it's a showcase for his skills on the keys, Buddy Tate also gets in plenty of space as well – blowing with a deep-toned tenor style that's made even better by the slight echo used in the recording! Other players include Emmett Berry on trumpet, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – and tracks include "Is It So", "Yes Indeed", "Willow Weep For Me", "Empty Bed Blues", and "It Don't Mean A Thing". Tate A Tate is a tightly swinging set that makes wonderful use of the tenor sax of Buddy Tate – recorded in a swing-based mode that's very much in the same spirit Verve was using with players of his vintage, but in a style that's slightly rougher around the edges! The whole thing's got a nicely echoing sound that lets Tate's tenor ring out nicely amidst small group backing from Clark Terry on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Larry Gales on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Tracks are a mix of shorter numbers and a few especially nice long ones – and titles include "Groun Hog", "#20 Ladbroke Square", "All Too Soon", and "Snatchin It Back". CD

Status/Prestige, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly nice little set from Clark Terry – featuring arrangements by Oliver Nelson, and a pretty nice little group that includes Budd Johnson on tenor and Eddie Costa on vibes and piano. The material appears to be lifted from the musical All American – by the team of Charles Strouse & Lee Adams – although the notes, and certainly not the title, don't do much to indicate this. The best part of the set is Nelson – who manages to, here as always, take any sort of material and give it a really strong swingin – bouncing it up with a lot of soul, and creating plenty of space for some strong breakout solos. Titles include "What A Country", "Same Language", "The Fight Song", "Nightlife", and "It's Fun To Think". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousFlorida Funk – Funk 45s From The Alligator State 1968 to 1975 (US pressing with bonus track) ... CD
Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's a whole lot more going down in Florida than alligators and Disney World – as you'll hear on this amazing little set! The package follows brilliantly in the tradition of Jazzman's Texas and Midwest Funk compilations – and like those collections, this one uncovers an incredible amount of under-heard music from an especially unlikely source! Florida is usually best remembered as the home of TK disco in the 70s, or contemporary club in more recent years – but back in the late 60s and early 70s, the state was a hotbed of indie funk activity – with loads of artists who were every bit as great as bigger names from points north, all working in an underground network of clubs, studios, and labels. The Jazzman team of Gerald Short and Malcolm Catto have really outdone themselves here – providing not only almost two dozen great funky tracks, but also a wealth of notes and information on each track – all served up in one really beautiful little package! The CD features a whopping 24 pages of notes and pictures all in color – with titles that include "Quit Jive'in" by Pearly Queen, "Cutting Room (Hot Pants)" by Oceanliners, "Super Cool" by Carrie Riley & The Fascinations, "Pure Funk (part 2)" by Delrays, "Do Right Man" by Sam Baker, "All The Time" by Bobby Williams & His Mar Kings, "Butterfly Theme" by Blowfly, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "Funky Fast Bump" by The Outlaw Gang, "Na Na" by Coke, "Get Down" by The Montereys, "90% Of Me Is You" by Vanessa Kendrick, "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma, "Baby Don't Cry" by Third Guitar, "Spider Web" by Weston Prim & Backlash, "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, "Save Me" by James Knight & The Butlers, and "It's Gonna Be A Mess (part 2)" by The Mighty Dogcatchers. US pressing features the bonus track "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma – and different cover art too! CD

A deep double-dip into the legendary TK Records catalog of Miami Soul – and one that offers up a very different version of the label than you might know from the hits! This 2CD set follows in the best tradition of the Free Soul series from Japan – which means that the collection is filled with unusual tracks that we might have missed otherwise, alongside other numbers that we do know, but which seem to have a really special vibe in this setting – an unpacking of the TK catalog from top to bottom, with a special focus on warmer, more unusual bits of funk and soul. Titles include "Jolie" by Lattimore, "Don't Waste My Time" by Jerry Washington, "Keep It Up" by Milton Wright, "You Knock Me Out" by Wildflower, "Cramp Your Style" by All The People, "I Can't Leave Your Love Alone" by Willie & Anthony, "Street Love" by Spats, "Concrete Jungle" by Little Beaver, "Good Good Lovin" by Charles Johnson, "90% Of Me Is You" by Vanessa Kendrick, "I Got Bills To Pay" by Johnny K, "You Can Be A Lady" by JP Robinson, "Love Is A Simple Thing" by Leon Ware, "Island Girl" by Lew Kirton, "Share Your Love" by Herman Kelly & Life, "Ain't Nothin Wrong" by KC & The Sunshine Band, "What Would Your Mama Say" by Facts Of Life, "Jazz Freak" by Paulette Reaves, "Let's Make A Baby" by Funky Brown, "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind" by Freddy Henry, and "How Long" by Brandye. Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements. Titles include "I Believe" by Calvin B Rhone, "Imitations" by Johnson Family Gospel Singers, "Change" by Wisdom, "On That Other Shore" by Harrison Jones & The Voices Of Harmony, "I've Been Converted" by The Converters, "Ain't No Way To Do Wrong" by New Creation, "Take It To The Streets" by Prophecy, "Let The Lord Come In Your Life" by Wisdom, "Keep The Fire" by Paradise, and "Jesus Is On The Mainline" by Mr Jesse R McGuire. A heady gumbo indeed – and a set that's way more than just the usual New Orleans classics – as you'll hear from the very first note of the collection! There's definitely some of the usual rolling soul sounds you'd expect from a Crescent City compilation – but there's also some wider elements going on, too – including a bit of soul jazz, some deeper blues, and even a few grittier grooves that really get at the special stew of sounds that went into the AFO label! Only a few of these tracks ever got wider US circulation at the time, but all stand together strongly with an equal level of soulful quality – and the set also includes a number of unissued tracks that make the whole thing essential, even if you've got some rare New Orleans 45s in your collection. Titles include "Mary" by The Tick Tocks, "All For One" by Willie Tee, "True Love" by Robbie Lee, "I Shall Not Be Moved" by The Pastor, "Empty Talk" by Alvin Robinson, "Ignant" by Melvin Lastie & Harold Battiste, "Give Her Up" by Alvin Robinson, "Things Have Changed" by Prince La La, "My Key Don't Fit" by Dr John & Ronnie Barron, "Private Eye" by Wallace Johnson, "Keep On Loving You" by The Pistol, "Olde Wine" by AFO Executives, "Mojo Hanna" by Tami Lyn, and "Tee Na Na Na Nay" by Eddie Bo. A great collection of rare 45s from the powerhouse TK Records label and all it's many smaller imprints – Dade, Glades, Alston, and many others – brought here together with a focus on a really special side of the label! TK was one of the first to really promote the 12" single in the disco generation – but before, during, and after the label maintained a strong commitment to the funky 45 too – and really used the format to showcase some of its stronger soul singers, in a way that made sure that the 7" singles packed plenty of punch! This set features 24 of those rare nuggets from TK, with plenty of obscure numbers in the lineup – and titles include "All Because Of Your Love" by Otis Clay, "Rules Are Made To Be Broken" by The Diamonettes, "Never Had A Love So Good" by Charles Johnson, "I Can't Speak" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Don't Waste My Time" by Jerry Washington, "Hold On To It" by Barry Smith, "Please Don't Stop" by Wildflower, "Stop Hurting Me Baby" by Purple Mundi, "One Night Affair" by The Rising Sun, "That Is Why" by Sherlyn Wittiker & Touch, "Even Though" by King Tutt, "Do What You Wanna Do (part 1)" by Frank Howard & The Continentals, and "How Can I Do What's Right" by Vanessa Kendrick. Rare Caribbean funk from the 70s – the second volume of West Indies Funk – once again delivering a stylistically diverse take on the classic funky soul from groups such as The Troubadours, Boo & The Tru Tones, Roosevelt Johnson & His Spice Islanders, The Cassanovas, Blue Rhythm Combo and others! All the things we dug about the first volume are in the mix once again – and ultimately the set goes even further with the range and boundlessly funky styles. Roc-A-Fella, 2004. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Kanye West finally dropped the full length in early '04 – and it's one of the best hip hop albums of the year. Kanye is probably the hottest beats producer of the year, too, having dug through the greatest soul hooks of the past few decades for his samples, and piled on the chunkiest, catchiest, thickest beats anywhere. And if he doesn't have the greatest vocal delivery in hop hop (if he did, he'd be Superman considering his production pedigree), he makes up for it with some masterful lines, like "I gotta apologize to Mos and Kweli/is it cool to rap about gold if I told the world I copped it from Ghana and Mali?" from "Breath In Breath Out". Hilariously, Kanye also found just about the sharpest theme for a record that we've scene in a while – the tangential connection between gang bangers and frat boys! He ain't granola, he ain't bling bling, he's just a guy from Chicago with a sometimes astoundingly strong production aesthetic, very smart rhymes and a lot of people who owe him great guest spots, and deliver. Were you looking for more than that? It's a triumph, one that Chicago couldn't be more proud of! "We Don't Care", "Graduation Day", "All Falls Down" with Syleena Johnson, "Spaceship" with GLC & Consequence, "Never Let Me Down" with Jay-Z, "Get 'Em High" with Talib Kweli & Common,"New Work Out Plan", the great single "Slow Jamz" with Twista & Jamie Foxx and more. You rarely see this one, which is a shame, because it's not only a beautiful spiritual masterpiece, but it's also got a sound that's very unique, and a nice shift from the Impulse records too! Pharoah's playing with a small group that includes instrumentation you don't usually hear on his albums – like organ and guitar – but the addition of these instruments is used in a way that augments Pharoah's spiritual style, not suppresses it – in a lineup that includes guitar from Munoz, organ from Jiggs Chase, bass from Steve Neil, drums from Greg Bandy, and percussion from Lawrence Killian – all very unusual players, which furthers the unusual sound of the album! Pharoah vocalizes a bit on a version of "Love Will Find A Way" that has a warm spacey groove, and a nice conga base – and the other tracks on the LP are "Harvest Time" and "Memories Of Edith Johnson". A great tribute to the genius of Alan Shorter – has classic late 60s album, plus a bonus track too! The core of the record is the album Orgasm, a record as striking as its title – and one of the few recorded performances of trumpeter Alan Shorter – brother of Wayne Shorter, and an equally powerful force in avant jazz in the 60s when he got a chance! And although Alan hardly recorded much, this album's a masterpiece – a set that bridges the "new thing" moment of jazz in the mid 60s with some of the freer improvisations that were taking over on both the New York and European scenes – a balance of modes that's similar to some of the Don Cherry albums for Blue Note in the late 60s, and delivered here with a stunning lineup that includes superb early modern tenor work from Gato Barbieri, bass from either Charlie Haden or Reggie Johnson, and drums from either Muhammad Ali or Rashied Ali. Tracks are all originals – and titles include "Parabola", "Straits Of Blagellan", "Outeroids", and "Orgasm". CD also features another key performance by Alan Shorter from a few years earlier – the track "Mephistopheles" from the Wayne Shorter album All Seeing Eye – with Wayne on tenor, James Spaulding on alto, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Grachan Moncur III on trombone, and Herbie Hancock on piano. Think you know everything there is to know about Stax Records? Think again – because this series serves up an incredible batch of material that was either unissued back in the day, or hardly ever got much circulation at the time! The project comes from the years after the initial Stax Singles box sets – and tracks here include numbers found during that process, but unissued – and others that were only discovered after digging through vaults of tape – and realizing just how much music the label recorded, but never even pressed onto wax! Yet that result is not surprising – given that the famous Memphis studio was always hopping around the clock – with groups like Booker T & The MGs, Mar-Keys, or Bar-Kays jamming in the studio, then making way for a range of singers and other guests as well – an all-star lineup who turn out some top material in this set. Titles on this first volume include "Hide Away" by Booker T & The MGs, "Don't Worry About Tomorrow" by Bobby Marchan, "Cupid" by Otis Redding, "Don't You Like To Me" by Albert King, "Hippy Dippy" by The Mar-Keys, "I've Got Dreams To Remember (alternate)" by Otis Redding, "Never Let Me Go (alternate)" by William Bell, "Cloudburst" by The Mad Lads, "Sweet Devil" by Mable John, "When My Love Comes Down" by Ruby Johnson, "Floyd's Beat" by Floyd Newman, "Run Around" by Carla Thomas, "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay" by Booker T & The MGs, and "Just Enough To Hurt Me" by The Astors. Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! As hinted by the title, the collection features tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that marked a key transition from earlier R&B and blues into soul music – work that pulled a bit more strongly from the church than some of its predecessors, and which also put over a groove that was a bit more sophisticated, sometimes a bit more polished – all to set the stage for the huge soul music explosion to come later in the 60s! A number of the artists here are familiar from R&B years, but they're represented by tracks that show a real change in their styles – and others are known from later successes, but stand out here with early work that's a lot more formative – making them a perfect choice for the collection. CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Come On & Stomp" by Marv Johnson, "Lil Valley" by The MMs & The Peanuts, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Irresistible You" by Bobby Peterson, "Take Your Heart" by Betty Willis, "Puff" by Kenny Lynch, "Jack Be Nimble" by The Intruders, "A Clock That's Got No Hands" by Della Reese, "I Came Running" by Wade Flemons, "You'd Be Crying Too" by The Matadors, "The Gypsy Said" by The Fiestas, "Please Don't Cry Anymore" by Ketty Lester, "Pretty Little Girl Next Door" by Bobby Day, and "Trouble I've Had" by Clarence Ashe. Dub Store (Japan), Late 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from King Jammy's studios – all cuts recorded at the end of the 80s, with a definite digital feel – but a sound that's still a lot warmer and more soulful than bigger mainstream work of the time! As the title promises, there's plenty of dancehall in the mix – but many of the grooves are more laidback and mellow – bridging the space between the bigger global hits in the style, and a dubbier, rootsier generation of reggae too – which seems to bubble forth here on most tracks, and just get a slight digital reworking by Jammy. The 2LP set features a very well-selected batch of material from these years – titles that appeared on labels like Greensleeves, Superpower, and Unity Sounds, with titles that include "Icky All Over" by Wayne Smith, "In The Area" by Johnny Osborne, "The Exit" by Dennis Brown, "Don't Touch The Crack" by Little Kirk, "Dancehall Vibes" by Anthony Johnson, and "Jack Slick" by Junior Murvin. ✨✧ VariousLegendary Rockin' R&B – A Collection Of Ultra Rare Black Rockers From The 50s & Early 60s ... CD
BBE (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rough, raw, and plenty darn rare – a killer set of R&B, blues, and doo wop tracks compiled By Keb Darge & Little Edith – with a groove that's almost as hard and heavy as some of Keb's rare funk collections! The feel here is a lot more 50s than 60s, but there's definitely a funky spirit at work in the material – lots of romping drums, soulful vocals, and tight small combo instrumentation – spun out in a selection of rare singles that have a lot more to offer than the usual grooves from the postwar years! Titles include "You Better Dig It" by Bill Johnson, "Zindy Lou" by The Mariners, "Little Girl Of Mine" by The Electras, "No Time" by The Titans, "Cool Joe" by The Cyclones, "Lonely Travelin" by Lonesome Lee, "Tarzan" by Artie Wilson, "She Can Rock" by Little Ike, "Don't Push Don't Pull Don't Shove" by The Willos, "Hi Fi Baby" by Teddy McRae, and "The Freedom Riders" by Harold Jackson & The Jackson Brothers. ✨✧ VariousLet The Music Play – Black America Sings Bacharach & David ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the huge influence on 60s soul from Burt Bacharach – a rich legacy that goes way beyond the big hits from Dionne Warwick, to include a wealth of work from artists you might not expect! Back in the early days, Burt was the tall white guy running around the Brill Building – where he made key connections to a range of different artists, and was able to already hit the ground running – with a huge legacy that would go onto inform soul singers for years to come! In fact, we'd almost say that Bacharach's music sounds even better in the hands of these singers than in more mainstream pop artists – and although a few of these cuts are well-known hits, you'll find plenty more great ones here to discover. Titles include "Alfie" by The Delfonics, "Reach Out For Me" by Willie Tee, "Message To Martha" by Jerry Butler, "Long After Tonight Is All Over" by Irma Thomas, "Another Tear Falls" by Marv Johnson, "Walk On By" by Gloria Gaynor, "Anyone Who Had A Heart" by The Orlons, "The Look Of Love" by Nina Simone, "Forgotten Man" by Gene McDaniels, "A House is Not A Home" by Mavis Staples, "Don't Make Me Over" by Brenda & The Tabulations, "This Empty Place" by Cissy Houston, and "My Little Red Book" by Tony Middleton with Bacharach himself! ✨✧ VariousNew York Is Our Home – Hardcore Hardbop Motherlode ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1950s. Used 2 CD ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from Blue Note Records – exactly the sort of jazz that really set the label apart back in the old days! The entire batch of work here is from the 50s – and is pulled either from groundbreaking 10" albums from the label's early 50s output, or from some of its key sides in the 1500 series in the latter part of the decade – all wonderful material throughout, with a sharp-edged sound that was hardly matched in jazz again – despite the countless inspired legions to tried to copy its groove! The package crackles from the very first note – really exploding with energy and dynamism, of the sort that makes it difficult to label this jazz with a few easy words – and which demands repeated listenings to the brilliant selection of tunes included in the package. 20 tracks in all – including "We Six" by Paul Chambers, "Avilla & Tequila" by Art Blakey, "Minor's Holiday" by Kenny Dorham, "Ande" by Louis Smith, "Wee Jay" by JR Monterose, "Coffee Pot" by JJ Johnson, "Doodlin" by Horace Silver, "Gaza Strip" by Lee Morgan, "Abdullah" by Elmo Hope, "Blue Lights" by Clifford Jordan & John Gilmore, "Don't Walk" by Hank Mobley, and "News For Lulu" by Sonny Clark. ✨✧ Norman ConnorsTake It To The Limit (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Arista (Japan), 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer work from the mighty Norman Connors – a set that's heavy on grooves, but which has all the jazzy depth of his early work too! The set features arrangements by some killer modern soul talents – Al Johnson, McKinley Jackson, and Paul Riser – who beautifully blend their own sweet touches with Connors' rich ideas – carried out here with some sublime vocals by Al Johnson himself, plus work from Jean Carn, Glenn Johnson, Adaritha, and The Jones Girls too! The instrumental vibe is as strong as well – with great solos from Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Gary Bartz on alto – and the combination of all these talents alone is testament to the continuing great vision of Norman Connors – one of the few cats who could make an album like this work so well! Titles include a great version of Steely Dan's "Black Cow", plus "Melancholy Fire", "Take It To The Limit", "Justify", "You've Been On My Mind", and an excellent remake of "I Don't Need Nobody Else". ✨✧ Ronnie FosterTwo Headed Freap (UHQCD pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the all-time keyboard classics of the 70s – a completely different album than any other set from pianist Ronnie Foster – done with this laidback, open-ended groove that was years ahead of its time! The album's in some ways a blueprint for some of our favorite jazz-based hip hop – and although Ronnie's playing organ, on most of the cuts, he handles the instrument more like it's a Fender Rhodes! The set's a masterpiece in funky jazz, done with a sinister, soulful groove – with these amazing rhythms from players who include Gene Bianco on harp, Arthur Jenkins on congas, George Duvivier and Gordon Edwards on bass, Jimmy Johnson on drums, George Devens on vibes, and Gene Bertoncini on guitar – served up with some amazing arrangements from soul maestro Wade Marcus. Titles include the massive cut "Mystic Brew", which is a tasty Tribe sample – plus lots of other goodies like "Chunky", "Summer Song", and "Don't Knock My Love". CD

✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz In Stockholm ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stan Getz makes a key musical trip to Sweden – to showcase his affection for a jazz scene that had been growing strongly in the postwar years – often in directions that were similar to Stan's own sound at the time! The session is one of the first to pair Stan's tenor with a Swedish group – in this case the bass of Gunnar Johnson, drums of Anders Burman, and piano of Bengt Hallberg – the last of which brings sharper, more angular style to the music than some of Stan's accompanists on earlier American dates – pointing the way towards new experiments to come in his music! Hallberg really helps break the mold from other Getz Verve sessions of the period – and the relaxed, open-ended recording style of the date is almost an equal showcase for his talents as it is for Stan's! Titles include "Indiana", "Get Happy", "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me", "Everything Happens To Me", "Without A Song", and "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You". CD

✨✧ Joe HoustonKicking Back ... CD
Big Town/BGP (UK), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare funk treat from tenor sax jazz legend Joe Houston – working in a far funkier mode than usual for the obscure Big Town label! The lineup and production is heavy with 50s LA R&B names in it – including Ted Butler, Bo Rhambo and Larry Johnson – and sure enough, there's genuine prime era rhythm & blues DNA in some of the material, to say nothing of the incredible chops of all involved – but the overall sound is very modern 70s jazz, with some really funky cuts, too! The highlight is the two-part title track, "Kicking Back", which is a top shelf jazz funk groover – but the whole record is solid, with "T-Bone Disco", "Hawaiian Disco", "Trippin' In", "Mr. Big H", and "Why Don't You Rock Me". ✨✧ Marilyn MooreMoody Marilyn Moore ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CD
