Holy Modal RoundersHoly Modal Rounders – Live In 1965 ... CD
ESP/Don Giovanni, 1965. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Some of the earliest music ever from The Holy Modal Rounders – a rare live performance from 1965, recorded at the Chess Mate nightclub in Detroit, and featuring only the duo of Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber! The music here is a bit more folksy and a bit less trippy than some of the Rounders' later recordings, but it still shows a decidedly left-field approach – not just in the subjects of the tunes, but also in the way the guitar, banjo, and fiddle are used – almost as additional voices at times, instead of conventional folk instrumentation. Titles include "Crowley Waltz", "Black Eyed Suzy", "My Mind Capsized", "Fishin Blues", "Rum Mountain", "Random Canyon", "Skin Game", "Indian War Whoop", and "Flop Eared Mule". CD

Holy Modal RoundersIndian War Whoop ... CD
ESP/Don Giovanni, 1967. New Copy ... $10.99
Some of the most tripped-out music ever from The Holy Modal Rounders – and that's saying a lot, given the nature of the group! This unique early album on ESP features two side-long tracks – both of which are mini-suites of sort, and filled with odd sounds, weird themes, and a strange mixture of hippie instrumentation and sci-fi experimentation! The group for the record is a quartet – with the core combo of Peter Stampfel on violin and vocals and Steve Weber on guitar, augmented by playwright Sam Shephard on drums and Lee Crabtree on piano and organ – plus extra vocals from the trio of Antonia, Barbara, & Wendy. The music is in the best free-thinking style of other rock on the ESP label in the 60s – and titles include "Jimmy & Crash Survey The Universe" and "The Second-Hand Watch". CD

International Anthem/Don Giovanni, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99 23.99
A fantastic mix of jazz and spoken word performance – delivered in a very righteous style that takes us back to the best vintage sides by artists like Wanda Robinson or Jayne Cortez! The words here are by Camae Ayewa – whose lyrics are as politically powerful as her presentation style – and the backing is by a superb quartet that features Keir Neuringer on alto, Aquiles Navarro on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass, and Tcheser Holmes on drums – all musicians who really do a lot to contribute to the power of the spoken passages, but in a way that never overwhelms them! The instrumental sounds are as powerful as the lyrics – and together, they make for a record that would have been a shining jewel of the loft jazz generation, had it been recorded back in the day – but at a level that's even more incredible for a contemporary set. Titles include "Chicago To Texas", "Fireworks", "Projects", and "Enough". LP, Vinyl record album

Nicole Mitchell & Moor MotherOffering – Live At Le Guess Who ... CD
Don Giovanni, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99 12.99
Nicole Mitchell is an artist who made us sit up and say "wow" when we first saw her perform on the south side of Chicago 25 years ago – and she continues to make us express the same sort of surprise as the years go on – ever shifting her music, changing her focus, and continuing to get involved with really creative projects like this! The record is part of Mitchell's new sense of cosmic exploration – and features Nicole on flute and electronics, working alongside a lot more electronics from Moor Mother, who also delivers spoken passages on the album's all long tracks – which maybe make the whole thing come across like some Afro-Futurist blend of jazz, spoken word, and science fiction music – something that must have been amazing to see when it was performed live for this recording. Titles include "Up Out Of The Ugly", "Vultures Laughing", and "Prototype Eve". CD

Mourning A BLKstarCycle ... LP
Don Giovanni, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99 29.99
A fantastic album from Mourning A BLKstar – even more powerful than their set dedicated to Eric Garner, and a batch of material that really gets at the righteous energy of this Cleveland combo! The group see themselves as part of the James Baldwin tradition of the artist bearing witness – and their genre-bending, gender non-confirming style really pushes forward the energy of underground soul music – as they worked together in an empty storefront in Cleveland to craft this beautiful cycle of songs initial sketches they all fleshed out together – in a mix of shifting vocal leads, heavy drums, dark guitar lines, and proud horn parts. Titles include "Sense Of An Ending", "Something JD Said", "Been Around", "Devil Get Behind Me", "Whom The Bell Tolls", "The Wants", "Deluze (Solange say rmx)", "So Young So", "The Box", and "4 Days". Mourning A BLKstarReckoning (with bonus download) ... LP
Don Giovanni, 2019. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
A tremendous effort from Mourning A BLKstar – a group who may be on their way to being the voice of a generation – as they work with an unabashed sense of righteous politics, funk, and soul – all taken to a higher plane in the process of creation! Plenty of folks are message-oriented in recent years, but these guys go things one better by working with a form that's often as powerful as their message – music that finds its own structure around the lyrical needs of the tunes – which sometimes creates a deeper drama in the lyrics, sometimes imbues them with a richness of spirit that's beyond description! Mourning A BLKstar don't just throw in some politics to a funk track, or get a bit righteous on a rhyme – and instead, they seem ready to create a genre that's all their own – with tracks that include "Blk Musak", "Harlem River Drive OG", "Situations", "Sweet Oil", "Star", "Reckoning", and "Gang Desire". International Anthem/Don Giovanni, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Damn incredible work from Irreversible Entanglements – a Philly group, but one who definitely belong in the special, small universe of the International Anthem label from Chicago! This set is even more fierce, more focused than their great debut – burning with righteous energy from a great small combo who play with fire and spirit throughout – and topped with knowledge and wisdom from Camae Ayewa, whose spoken words really hold the whole thing together! The record echoes spoken word/jazz experiments from the most righteous corners of the 70s spiritual avant underground – but has a very different energy that not only belies the younger status of the group, but also the importance of their very contemporary message. Other members include Keir Nueringer on tenor, Aquiles Navarro on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass, and Tcheser Holmes on drums – and all members also play percussion – on titles that include "Bread Out Of Stone", "The Code Noir/Amina", "Who Sent You – Ritual", "No Mas", and "Blues Ideology". Don Giovanni, 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool group from the Boston scene of the early 80s – a quartet who are clearly as inspired by the aggro punk styles of the Leeds scene in the UK, as they are the jagged styles of the No Wave moment in New York! The guitars are razor-sharp and cutting all the way through – driving the sound in a great way, over basslines that would have made the young Gang Of Four proud – laced with some surprisingly cool violin, which creates some great sonic touches, as does the sometime use of organ. The whole thing is great – very DIY, with an early Rough Trade spirit throughout – on titles that include studio cuts "Black Sheep", "Sinner", "French Fries", and "Sarah's Braid" – and live cuts "Bug Spray", "Mouse Trap", "Psycho Analyzer", "Mommy", "Bag Man", and "Sidewalk Slip". ✨✧ Lee KonitzStereokonitz ... CD
RCA (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite-ever Lee Konitz albums – a really unique session with a wonderful kind of sound! The record is one that might not please all Konitz purists – as Lee plays a bit of Varitone sax and flute in addition to his usual acoustic alto. However, the set's got an amazing edge that you don't really hear in his other work – and was recorded in Italy in 1968 with a hip group that's working in a tight modal soul jazz mode. The other players include Italian luminaries Enrico Rava on trumpet, Franco D'Andrea on piano, and Giovanni Tomasso on bass – and the group grooves in a way that Konitz ensembles never do, pushing Lee to do these solos that actually open up a bit more than usual, almost even showing a bit of the spiritual jazz influences of the time. Titles include "Komonia", "Midnight Mood", "Take Seven", "Tune Down", and "Terre Lontane". CD

Sweet singer/songwriter work from the Italian scene – done with some slight new wave influences as well – all to make for a catchy batch of tunes from singer Rino Gaetano! Giovanni Tommaso helped on the arrangements, but the core sound is from a tighter combo – one that matches the energy of Gaetano's vocals on tunes that include "Jet Set", "Meta Africa Meta Europa", "Sombrero", "Ping Pong", "Ti Ti Ti Ti", and "La Donna Mia/Scusa Mary". ✨✧ Giovanni FuscoI Cosacchi ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1959. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An early score from Giovani Fusco – done for a late 50s film about Russian Cossacks, and scored with some of the same mix of modes you'd find in some of the blood and sandals epics from the time! By that, we mean that the score has a blend of familiar postwar orchestrations with more exotic phrasing from time to time – often in moments that give way to some of the greater drama of the action scene – as of the unusual phrasing and woodwind elements are hinting at the evil Cossacks right around the corner! There's a few more dramatic dynamic passages that hint at heroic action against the invaders – and the CD features 23 tracks in all, all directed by Carlo Savina. CD

Four Flies (Italy), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Modern jazz from the Italian scene of the 60s – all of it recorded for film and soundtrack use, and almost none of is released before! The music here shows not just the fantastic advances in film scoring in the 60s, but also the overlooked growth of jazz in Italy at the same time too – shifts in sounds and styles that continue to amaze us – even if most of the commercial recordings never got much global circulation at the time! And these sounds are even more unusual and special than those – recorded by names that you'd recognize as both musicians and composers – and mostly presented in small combo modes that resonate strongly with rare Italian jazz records of the period. Titles include "Tempo Di Charlston" by Enrico Simonetti, "I Nostri Mariti" by Armando Trovajoli, "Amarsi Male" by Silvano Spadaccino, "Un'Ora Per Vivere" by Nino Tassone, "Desideri D'Estate" by Gino Peguri, "La Curruzione" by Giovanni Fusco, "La Donna E Una Cosa Meravigliosa" by Perio Piccioni, "La Ragazzola" by Romano Mussolini, and "Una Jena In Cassaforte" by Gianfranco E Gian Piero Reverberi. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 500 copies – pressed on 180 gram vinyl and with bonus CD!)
