Sun Ra & OthersRocket Ship Rock ... LP
Norton, 1960s. New Copy ... $13.99 16.00
Wild and wooly Rocket Ship Rock from Sun Ra and his Arkestra – featuring shout blues vocalist Yochanan – often billed as "the man from outer space" and a cat who could give Screamin Jay Hawkins a run for his money in the excitable oddball category – jumping 60s r&b with an interstellar theme, freaked out jazz, and unhinged genius from the Saturn vaults! Rocket Ship Rock features material that's the next stratospheric step from the early doo wop era recordings, with Yochanan coming unhinged without ever jettisoning his considerable charisma, on most of the numbers – including rare Saturn tracks, unissued and alternate and rehearsal takes – plus rare numbers other vocalists including Little Mack, Lacy Gibson and Ebah (both from the later 60s when Ra was going crazy for the Batman themes) and Don "Dino" Dean. Amazing spacey 60s soul & r&b with a wild eyed grit and the Arkestra in it's nicely gritty realm of the cosmos. Very well packaged by the folks at Norton, with nice liner notes, too. Titles include "Muck Muck", "Hot Skillet Momma", "Rocket Ship Rock", "The Sun Man Speaks", "Message To Earth Man" (#s 1& 2) with Yochanan, plus "Tell Her To Come On Home" feat Little Mack, "I Am Gonna Unmask The Batman" feat Lacy Gibson and an unissued version with Ebah, plus "Space Stroll" featuring Don "Dino" Dean. VariousDJ Andy Smith Presents Reach Up – Disco Wonderland Vol 2 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.99
A soaring batch of disco gems, club cuts, and undiscovered nuggets – all pulled together to make a set that's even better than the first entry in this Disco Wonderland series! DJ Andy Smith and associates bring together a great array of fresh tracks from back in the day – not massive disco hits, but also not the kind of rare gems that maybe never made the cut for a good reason – and instead, the tracks here work together perfectly, and even get a few special mixes along the way by Smith and the crew, which includes a few contemporary cuts that fit perfectly next to the vintage material. Titles include "Get Up & Dance (Bad Bikini re-edit)" by Disco Circus, "You're The Best" by The Emotions, "Heaven" by The Gibson Brothers, "Dreamin" by Greg Henderson, "You Don't Know (Crissy Kybosh rmx)" by Serious Intention, "For The Love Of Money" by Armada Orchestra, "You & I" by Ronnie Jones, "Sweet Dynamite" by Claudja Barry, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "Night Of My Life" by Full Intention & Nick Reach Up with Jazz Morley, "I'm In Love" by Cela, "Love Don't Come Easy" by New Jersey Connection, "Lost Without You (Andy Smith re-edit)" by Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler, and "Ghetto Disco" by Ted Taylor. 2CD version features one CD of the songs mix, another unmixed! VariousGreetings From Georgia – The Peach State ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Georgia-themed tunes from a variety of generations – and nary a Ray Charles recording in the bunch! The tracks here open up a surprisingly strong legacy of songs about the Peachtree State – more music than we might have guessed, especially given the legacy of songs that other states rate over the years – served up here in a cool blend of styles that includes plenty of country, pop, and a touch of rock and roll! Titles include "Georgia Sunshine" by Dean Martin, "It's A Long Long Way To Georgia" by Don Gibson, "Georgia On My Mind" by Frankie Laine, "Wild Georgia Boy" by Jim & Jessie, "Atlanta Georgia" by Jimmie Davis, "Georgia Boogie" by Curley Williams, "Poor Red Georgia Dirt" by Stonewall Jackson, "All Over Hell & Half Of Georgia" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Tennemonk Georgia" by Carl Mann, "Georgia Piney Woods" by Osborne Brothers, and "Burn Georgia Burn" by Tompall Glaser. ✨✧ VariousWild Man Rock – Hillbilly & Rustic Rockabilly Bop ... CD
Atomicat, Mid 50s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Plenty of wild cuts here – rare gems from that moment when hillbilly and rockabilly were running neck and neck in the 50s – turning out a range of wonderful tracks that show just how explosive country was in the postwar years, and how much things were intertwined with the rising tide of rock and roll as well! There's a nice mix of big names and lesser-known artists here – all running neck and neck through the 28 track collection of cuts on the CD – titles that include "The DJ Blues" by Hank Harral, "Wild Man Rock" by Hunter Watts & His Southern Pals, "Ah Ha" by Don Gibson, "Mule Skinner Blues" by Gene Davis, "You Better Not Do That" by Pete Pike, "Cotton Pickin Boogie" by Shorty Holloway, "Gonna Romp & Stomp" by Slim Rhodes, "Come Around To Me" by Gene O'Quin, "Out Behind The Barn" by Little Jimmy Dickens, "There's A Leak In This Old Building" by Brother Claude Ely, "Long Time Gone" by Tibby Edwards, and "I Can't Find The Doorknob" by Jimmy & Johnny. VariousJukebox Jam 2 – Blues & Rhythm Revue ... LP
Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A sensational sequel to one of the greatest compilations of rare rhythm & blues we've seen from the deep diggin' Jazzman label – one that goes even deeper than the first! A good deal of these juke box treasures are from the mid 50s to early 60s – all of 'em ones that have been overlooked since way back in the day, having escaped the attention of all but the most devoted collectors for decades! Jumping R&B is the core sound here, but this volume is actually a more diverse batch than its predecessor – with some grittier proto-rock R&B, some more swinging jazz numbers, and a bit of popcorn soul as well – all of 'em killer! Titles include "Lament" by Mamie Perry, "If You Ain't Got No Bread", "Tears Baby" by Johnny West, "Rock A While" by Dewey Guy & The Fabulous Six, "Cat Music" by Dave Bartholomew, "I Done Done It" by Amos Milburn, "Swingin'" by Saunders King., "Big Game Hunter" by Steve Gibson The Red Caps, "Cleopatra" by The Mark VI, "I'll Get You, Too" by Billy Emerson, "That Ain' The Way To Do It" by Big Sis Andrews, "I'll Walk A Mile" by Bob Marriott & The Continentals, and "It Only Hurts A Little While" by Little Willie John.
