✨✧ Don Byas with The Jacobs BrothersGroovin High – Live In Haarlem 1964 (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Dutch Jazz Archive/55 Records (Japan), 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An unusual later performance from tenor giant Don Byas – one that has him working with a very cool Dutch group, and hitting some modes that are quite different than some of Don's earlier work! Byas was right at home in the overseas scene at the time – a fact that you'll notice on his surprisingly strong Dutch language introductions to one of the tracks, and which you'll hear superbly in his work with Pim Jacobs on piano, Ruud Jacobs on bass, and John Engels on drums – all top players on the scene in The Netherlands, with a bold rhythmic approach that often pushes Byas more strongly into 60s grooves than anyone might expect. The album begins with a great modal version of "On Green Dolphin Street", and includes takes on "I Remember Clifford", "Lady Bird", "Groovin High", "Moonlight In Vermont", and "Billie's Bounce". CD

✨✧ Don RedmanSwiss Radio Days Vol 11 – Don Redman Orchestra, Geneva 1946 ... CD
TCB (Switzerland), 1946. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great live set from one of the large group giants – alto saxophonist Don Redman, one of the key 40s forces in bringing things forward from the swing years to the generation of modern jazz! That shift is heard here beautifully – on tunes recorded for Swiss Radio in the mid 40s, with an excellent lineup that also includes Don Byas on tenor, Peanuts Holland on trumpet, Quentin Jackson on trombone, Billy Taylor on piano, and Tyree Glenn on both trombone and vibes – the latter of which get some great space at the start of the set. Arrangements are nearly all by Redman, and all mighty fresh – and titles include "Laura", "Embraceable You", "Tea For Two", "These Foolish Things", "Stormy Weather", "Carry Me Blues", and "How High The Moon". ✨✧ Charlie Christian/Dizzy GillespieAfter Hours ... CD
Esoteric/OJC, Early 40s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The roots of bebop! During the early 40s, sets held in Harlem nightclubs, especially the famous Minton's, were seminal to the development of bebop – and you'll hear exactly what we mean on this long overdue CD reissue. The set features material recorded by Jerry Newman at Minton's and Monroe's up in Harlem – sessions that include players like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Christian, Thelonious Monk, Hot Lips Page, Kenny Clarke, and Don Byas. The players run through a batch of material that might be called small-combo swing – but the style of the solos shows a lot of bebop, as well as a strong penchant for new ideas. Titles include "Lips Flips", "Swing to Bop", "Guy's Got To Go", "Kerouac", and "Stardust". CD
