Fats DominoFats Is Back ... CD
Bullseye Blues, 1968. Used ... $4.99
Fats is back, and sounding pretty darn great – working here with rootsy production from Richard Perry, who's got a great ear for all of Domino's older strengths, yet also manages to update his sound a bit for the late 60s! The record's got a really romping groove – lots of New Orleans elements in the rhythms, brought forward a bit by players who include King Curtis on sax, Eric Gale on guitar, and Earl Palmer on drums – all working amidst some Warner-styled arrangements that have plenty of respect for the past. The Blossoms sing backing vocals on a few numbers, and titles include "I Know", "Lady Madonna", "So Swell When You're Well", "I'm Ready", "One More Song For You", "One For The Highway", "Make Me Belong To You", and "Honest Papas Love Their Mamas". And be warned, the album starts with a track called "My Old Friends" – which is a scratchy collage of old Fats Domino records! CD

Renaldo Domino only cut a handful of singles for Twinight Records back in the day – but he's back in perfect formation here, and really sounding wonderful – with a heartbreaking vocal that crackles nicely over the soaring arrangements of "Laggin & Draggin"! "Give Up The Love" has a fuller feel – strings gliding over these majestic backings, almost with a Curtom vibe – and the heartfelt quality of Renaldo's vocals really make the whole thing come together! 7-inch, Vinyl record

BuzzcocksDifferent Kind Of Tension ... CD
Liberty/Domino, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The third album from the great Buzzcocks – one of the most fiercely melodic bands of the punk era, and one of the best bands for tuneful, yet barbed songwriting of the late 70s, period! Different Kind Of Tension is a pretty accurate title for this set, the last of the first wave of the group's career, with weird electronic flourishes and artier sounds to be found than the furiously straightforward previous couple of records. It's not as radical of a change of pace as, say, Wire's progress from the first to third albums, but a different kind of tension, as they say. Titles include "Mad Mad Judy", "You Say You Don't Love Me", "Hollow Inside", "I Believe", "Radio Nine", "Paradise", "Sitting Round At Home", and "I Don't Know What To Do With My Life". CD

Cinematic OrchestraTo Believe ... CD
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. Titles include "To Believe", "A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life", "A Promise", "Zero One/This Fantasy", "The Workers Of Art", and "Wait For Now/Leave The World". CD

Beth Gibbons & Polish National Radio Symphony OrchestraHenryk Gorecki – Symphony No 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs) (180 gram pressing with DVD & download) ... LP
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $35.99 38.98
An incredible combination of talents – all with results that are even greater than the sum of its parts – as the voice of Beth Gibbons fronts Symphony No 3 by Henryk Gorecki, all beautifully conducted by the hands of Krzystof Penderecki! Somehow, there's a quality here that's really transcendent of all three creative talents involved – a work that's got plenty of depth, but maybe not all the darkness you might expect – not just because Gibbons' vocalizations create this very human angle, but also because Penderecki also seems to be working from a more alive tonal palette – at least more than we're used to – using the symphony with these quietly building waves of sound – which, mixed with the voice, almost makes the whole thing feel like some more ambitious project from 4AD. Young Marble GiantsColossal Youth (expanded 3CD version) ... CD
Rough Trade/Domino, 1979. Used 3 CDs ... $12.99
One of the most distinctive albums of the UK post-punk scene – spare, stripped-down, and completely sublime! Where most of their contemporaries grabbed the world by doing more, Young Marble Giants made their mark by doing less – just a bit of bass, some scratchy guitar, thin keyboards, and simple beats – all topped by the light vocals of Alison Statton – sweet and dreamy, but also a bit cold at times too! The approach is quite unique, and hard to describe accurately – but all these decades later, the set still stands as one of the purest moments of genius from a scene that had plenty of genius to offer! Titles include "Searching For Mr Right", "Constantly Changing", "Include Me Out", "The Taxi", "NITA", "Colossal Youth", "Music For Evenings", and "Credit In the Straight World". 3CD package features a wealth of extra material too! CD 2 features 26 tracks pulled from the incredible Testcard EP, plus the "Final Day" single, the Salad Days album, and even their "Ode To Booker T" from the Is The War Over compilation! CD 3 features a John Peel session from 1980 – with 5 more tracks – and the package also includes a thick booklet too, with images, photos, and long notes on the group by Simon Reynolds. CD

✨✧ Salum Abdallah & Cuban Marimba BandNgoma Tanzania ... LP
Domino Sound, Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from the short-lived musical legacy of Salum Abdallah and his Cuban Marimba Band – a group from Tanzania, but one who play with lots of influence from Latin Music – as you might guess from their name! And yet, unlike some of the larger, fuller Latin-influenced groups that were springing up on the West African scene of the 60s, this combo has a sound that's pretty stripped-down – often just heavy percussion and work on guitar – which appears to be a unique hybrid of the Cuban style of the instrument, which gets plucked and inflected in great ways next to the vocals! The well-done set might be the best we've seen so far from the Domino Sound label – and features tracks that include "Njoo Haraka", "Naumiya", "Cuba Cha Cha", "Kutenda Maovu", "Ngoma Iko Huku", "Macho Laini", "Masikitiko", and "Asiye Bahati Duniani". Disc 1 features work that Kieren has done for a roster as varied as Radiohead, Madvillian (those killer mixes that we had such a tough time getting a hold of in the US on wax), Bonobo, Bloc Party, Aphex Twin and others. Titles include "Tics" (Lars Horntveth), "Skttbrain" (Radiohead), "Money Folder" (Madvillain), "Great Day" (Madvillian), "So Here We Are" (Bloc Party) and more. ✨✧ VariousRemolino De Oro – Coastal Cumbias From Colombia's Discos Fuentes 1961 to 1973 ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Domino Sound, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Old school cumbia tunes – with plenty of raw rhythms and acoustic instrumentation in the mix! The package is a wicked batch of rare numbers from Colombia's legendary Discos Fuentes – most of which are from the early and mid 60s, recorded at a time when the imprint was really making some great waves in Latin music – coming up with a regional sound that was quite different than the popular New York modes of the time – and than the host of other scenes that tried to copy it! Instead, the tunes here work in these romping rhythms that really get to the heart of the cumbia vibe – often touched with a blend of jazz inflections and folkloric instrumentation, wrapped up beautifully together. Titles include "Lorenza" by Los Gavilanes De La Costa, "Cumbia Costena" by Alejandro Duran, "Ocaso Marino" by Los Satelites, "La Pollera Colora" by Los Corraleros De Majagual, "Remolino De Oro" by Abel Antonio Villa, and "Al Amanecer" by Los Cumbiamberos De Pacheco. Domino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
It's impossible to go wrong with The Buzzcocks during their early, and all-too-short years of greatness – and this fantastic second album is head and shoulders above work from most of their classic contemporaries on the UK scene! At a time when the group had already conquered the world of the punk rock single – they completely knock it out of the park with a full length set like this – really burning on all cylinders with loads of tight, sharp, hook-heavy tracks – then getting even more inventive and expressive with their guitars, at a level that feels like it's setting the scene for all the UK fuzz to come in the next decade! Titles include their classic "Ever Fallen In Love" – plus "Real World", "Sixteen Again", "ESP", "Walking Distance", Love Is Lies", "Nostalgia", "Late For The Train", "Operators Manual", and "Nothing Left". All their classics are here – the short, tight, yet tuneful tracks that made these guys such a standout in the early punk years – and which also gave them the sort of wit that few folks could ever match, even all these many years later. Every track is a gem – and titles include "Orgasm Addict", "What Do I Get", "Ever Fallen In Love", "Promises", "Everybody's Happy Nowadays", "Harmony In My Head", "Noise Annoys", "Just Lust", "Lipstick", and "Something's Gone Wrong Again". ✨✧ Tewolde ReddaEritrea's Guitar Pioneer – Singles 1970 to 1973 ... LP
Mississippi/Domino Sound, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Very cool work from this enigmatic Ethiopian guitarist – a musician whose sound is an important part of the same golden years covered by the Ethiopiques series! Tewolde Redda plays both conventional electric guitar, and an electrified version of the more traditional krar (kirar), which is used here with all of these wonderful lines and sounds – really a much more flexible range than a more conventional guitar – or maybe a bit like a conventional guitar in which someone's really working the whammy bar too! The set brings together some of his most important tracks from the early 70s – singles originally issued on Philips and other labels – with titles that include "Wuba", "Ab Tequai Kerebi", "Kab Nab", "Telsemki", "Gamey", "Monona", "Hidri", and "Kirar Mistequane". Bobby CharlesAlligators, Sprockets, & Bended Knees ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.99
A huge collection of work from the great Bobby Charles – a sometimes-overlooked figure in late 50s music, but a key force in developing the sound of Louisiana at the time! Bobby hailed from the cajun part of the state, but also drank heavily from the R&B that was brewing up in New Orleans – and the records within are part of a fantastic genre-crossing legacy that's always gotten Charles equal interest from fans of older rock and soul! The package is very heavy on key material that Bobby recorded for Chess Records, including a number of tracks that were not issued at the time – and the set also features some later singles for Imperial, which continue the kind of Crescent City soulfulness that Bobby really helped forge with a few key contemporaries as the start of a much bigger legacy to come. The set features 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "Oh Yeah", "Since She's Gone", "Watch It Sprocket", "I'm A Fool To Care", "Mr Moon", "Ain't Got No Home", "Laura Lee", "Take It Easy Greasy", "One Eyed Jack", "No More", "You Can Suit Yourself", "On Bended Knee", "Hey Good Lookin", "Why Did You Leave", "Your Picture", "Good Lovin", "Those Eyes", and "What A Party". Also includes a few bonus tracks that show Bobby's influence on other artists – tracks by Fats Domino, Clarence Henry, John Fred, and Bill Haley. CD

Exile/Sony, 1973. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
Van Morrison at the height of his solo powers – working here in an extended live set that opens up with all the genius for vocal expression and inflection he developed during his initial solo years at Warner Brothers! The setting is perfect to show the growing confidence Morrison has in his talents – an unbridled sense of soul that comes on even more strongly on some of these versions than on earlier takes of the tunes in the studio – especially as they mix with a few great covers here that further illustrate the wide range of inspirations that Van brings into his music. Backing is by a tight, soulful combo – and tracks include "Domino", "Wild Children", "I Believe To My Soul", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "These Dreams Of You", "Into The Mystic", "Warm Love", "Saint Dominic's Preview", "Bring It On Home To Me", "Listen To The Lion", "Gloria", "Cyprus Avenue", "Caravan", and "Take Your Hand Out Of My Pocket". ✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordFlight For Four ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spectacular work from one of the most groundbreaking groups of its time – the legendary John Carter/Bobby Bradford Quartet – quite possibly the hippest thing going in the LA scene of the late 60s! The group includes Carter on alto and tenor, Bradford on trumpet – working together in these amazing lines that have both players running off together in a style that's free, but often quite rhythmic – spurred on to move past the new freedoms unlocked by the Ornette Coleman group a few years before! Yet the vibe here is very different than Ornette, too – given the bold, righteous power that comes through in the voices of both players – working here at a level that seems to blow away just about anything else going on in the American avant garde at the time. The group has just two more players to round out its amazing sound – Tom Williamson on bass, and Bruz Freeman (brother of Von and George!) on drums – and all tracks are long and free, yet also fragile and intimate – with an almost painterly sense of beauty and emotion that stands in stark contrast to much of the avant work of the time coming out of the east coast. Titles include "Domino", "Abstractions For Three Lovers", "Woman", and "The Second Set". CD

A later classic from the legendary Justin Hinds – reunited here with his Dominoes group, in a musical legacy that stretches back to the early 60s! Despite the date of the set, the production is very classic and nicely understated – no attempt to make Hinds a contemporary superstar, but instead to revel in that unique vocal style he'd been bringing to Jamaican music for the previous two decades – finally given a chance to flower again in its best setting! The backing group is great – Earl Chinna Smith on guitar, Carlton Barrett on drums, and Aston Barrett on bass – all working in a mode that sounds laidback, but which is also incredibly precise – really bringing great energy to songs that include "Miss Wendell", "Book Of History", "Weeping Eyes", "In The Jungle", "Sweet Lorraine", "The Rainbow", and "Get Ready Rock Steady". ✨✧ Barons, Dominoes, Queenettes, & OthersRoots – Rhythm & Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1966. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

VariousGreater Jamaica Moonwalk Reggae/Reggay At Its Best (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A pair of wonderful lost albums – presented here with a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is Greater Jamaica Moonwalk Reggae – a set that showcases the newly tight groove of the Kingston scene, courtesy of producer Duke Reid – with an especially strong emphasis on basslines and organ, with less of the full horns than you might have found a few years before! The set's maybe worth it alone for the fantastic funky number "Lock Jaw" by Dave Barker – but the whole thing's great, and other titles include "Only A Smile" by Glen Adams, "Drink Milk" by Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, "Moonlight Groover" by Winston Wright, "Stealing Stealing" by John Holt, "You Were To Be" by The Gladiators, "Quando Mi Amor" by The Ethiopians, and "Funky Funky Reggae" by Dave Barker. Reggay At Its Best is a fantastic showcase for the tenor talents of Tommy McCook – the saxophonist who was as important to the Kingston scene as Jr Walker was to Motown and Detroit – equally able to stand on his own as an instrumental lead, and really keep a strong soul instrumental spirit! Tommy blows with the Supersonics group – and titles include "Tribute To Don", "Live Injection", "Doctor No Go", "The Saint", "Bongo Nyah", and a version of "The Liquidator" – and the album also features a few non McCook cuts, "Joy Ride" by Karl Bryan and "Zylon" by Winston Wright. 2CD set features a massive 38 bonus tracks from the same time – all other Duke Reid numbers, with work by Tyrone Evans, The Melodians, The Silvertones, Errol Dunkley, The Gold Tones, Girl Satchmo, Vincent Gordon, The Righteous Flames, The Yard Brooms, and many others. ✨✧ VariousBlue Break Beats 3 ... CD
Blue Note, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really wonderful collection of grooves that first came to light in the 90s – one that had the Blue Note label digging back in their catalog and completely re-thinking their approach to reissues – given the new popularity of jazz in the hip hop sample world! As you'd guess from the title, the music here is very strongly oriented in the mode of "breaks", or tracks that were sampled for later hip hop and club recordings – classic jazz tunes from the glory days of Blue Note that have gone onto live again, thanks to the keen ears and inventive work of more contemporary DJs and producers. After all these years, The Blue Breakbeats series still stands as one of the best illustrations of the funkier side of the label – and titles on this third volume "Howling for Judy" by Jeremy Steig, "Mystic Brew" by Ronnie Foster, "Get Out Of My Live Woman" by Joe Williams, "Soul" by Jackie McLean, "Put On Train" by Gene Harris & The Three Sounds, "Light My Fire" by Shirley Bassey, "Ode To Billie Joe" by Lou Donaldson, "You've Made Me So Very Happy" by Lou Rawls, "Walk Tall" by Cannonball Adderley, "Sho-Nuff Mellow" by Reuben Wilson, "Don't Call Me N*gger Whitey" by Gene Harris, "Blacks & Blues" by Bobbi Humprhey, "Dominoes" by Donald Byrd, "Ground Hog" by Duke Pearson, "Goin Down South" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Down Here On The Ground" by Grant Green, "It's Your Thing" by Lou Donaldson, and "Flat Backin" by Blue Mitchell. King/Gusto, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Few folks did 50s R&B better than the legendary King Records – and when it came to Christmas music, the label was pretty darn great at that, too! This cool package brings together a range of King Records Christmas gems from back in the day, mixed with a few choice cuts from other indie labels – all in a sweet set that includes a few instrumentals, a bit of blues, and lots of the hard-wailing vocal numbers that made King so great! Titles include "Silent Night" by Bill Doggett, "Christmas Time For Everybody But Me" by Hank Ballard, "Christmas In Heaven" by Billy Ward & The Dominoes, "Lonesome Christmas (part 1)" by Lowell Fulson, "Christmas Tears" by Freddie King, "Jingle Bells" by Bill Doggett, "I Hear Christmas Bells" by Freddie King, "Christmas Blues" by Gatemouth Moore, "How I Hate To See Christmas Come Around" by Jimmy Witherspoon, "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" by Mabel Scott, "Christmas Comes But Once A Year" by Amos Milburn, "Santa Claus Is Coming" by Hank Ballard, "The First Noel" by Galatian Singers, "Frosty The Snowman" by Trailblazers, and "Twinkle Twinkle Christmas Star" by Lillian Brooks. ✨✧ VariousGreatest Jamaican Beat/Tommy McCook & The Supersonics Soul Rocksteady (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of killer albums from the rocksteady years – back to back in a single set, with a heck of a lot of bonus tracks too! First up is the compilation Greatest Jamaican Beat – also titled Rocksteady Baba Boom Time – seminal Duke Reid productions from the key rocksteady years – and a set that shows just how much the rhythm was changing things on the Jamaican scene, both at a vocal and instrumental level! There's a slow-loping vibe to most of these tracks – an approach that really sets the scene for the reggae explosion to come – yet most of the instrumentation still has the strong horn work of the ska/blue beat generation, and even some of the jazzier work of the Kingston scene at the start of the 60s – thanks in large part to Tommy McCook, who plays a fair bit on the set. Titles include "Tommy's Rock Steady", "Hot Rock", "Soul Serenade", and "Down On Bond Street" by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics – plus the killer "Baba Boom" by The Jamaicans, "Drink Wine" by The Techniques", "Release Me" by Phyllis Dillon, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" by The Paragons, and a great remake of "Hey Leroy Your Mama's Calling You" by Sam Jones. The second half of the set features a record completely devoted to work from the great Tommy McCook and his Supersonics group – instrumental rocksteady gems that are filled with plenty of twists and turns! McCook was one of the sharpest saxophone players on the Kingston scene in the 60s – and his varied styles and sounds here are completely incredible – really blowing away contemporary recordings by King Curtis or Jr Walker, partly because Tommy also knows when to bring in just the right current of jazz. Titles include "Soul Rock", "Starry Night", "Zazuka", "Train To Ska-Thedral", "What Now My Love", "Sir Don", "Saboo", and "Never To Be Mine". 2CD set features 26 bonus tracks – 13 more by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics – and more by Norman Grant, The Gladiators, Jamaicans, Justin Hinds & The Dominos, Three Tops, Eric Morris, Treasure Isle Boys, and Gloria & Franklin. This is the kind of Christmas album we totally love to hear – and no surprise, since the record is full of music from one of our favorite record labels of all time! The set not only brings together some rare holiday nuggets from the King catalog of the postwar years – it also does so in a way that demonstrates the genius that the label could bring to key styles of music it handled – blues, R&B, early soul, and even a bit of hillbilly too – all brought together here in a rare set that definitely keeps our spirits bright. Titles include "Let's Make Every Day A Christmas Day" by Bubber Johnson, "Christmas Questions" by Joe ward, "Winter Wonderland" by Bill Doggett, "Nuttin For Christmas" by Joe Ward, "Merry Christmas To Michael" by Lillian Brooks, "It's Christmas" by Herb George, "Ringin In A Brand New Year" by Billy Ward & The Dominoes, "Jingle Bells" by Cowboy Copas, "Christmas Eve In My Home Town" by Roy Stevens, "Santa's Little Sleigh Bells" by Ruby Wright, and "Santa Is On His Way" by Al Dexter. ✨✧ VariousTreasure Isle Ska Albums Collection (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Four albums' worth of vintage ska from the Jamaican scene – presented here with a heck of a lot of bonus tracks too! These tracks are the real deal – some of the earliest tracks to be circulated under the name of the new style – and the sorts of songs that just about everyone tried to copy right off the bat, and kept on trying to match for decades more! The work all comes from the magical fingers of Duke Reid, of the Treasure Island label – and there's a fair bit of jazz in the mix too, as these groups are overflowing with talented musicians who were playing straighter jazz just a few years before. The package features the full albums Birth Of Ska, Latin Goes Ska, The Skatalite, and Don Drummond's Greatest Hits – plus 19 more bonus tracks – with work by Duke Reid's All Stars, Don Drummond, Botty & Bonny, Rico Rodriguez, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, Owen & Leon Silvera, Eric Morris, Roland Alphonso, Clive & Naomi, The Richards Brothers, Baby Brooks, and many others. 58 tracks in all!
