Fats DominoFats Domino Swings ... LP
Imperial, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Fats Domino Swings – a total of 12 million records, according to the cover! We're not sure if that claim's accurate or not, but we can say that the album's got a million dollar sound, and is a perfect demonstration of the genius that made Domino unlike anyone else back in the day – a completely unique artist to rise from the New Orleans scene in the 50s, but one who's also steeped in all the musical roots of the city! Fats has a way of laying down on the piano that brings forward older riffing styles, but in a leaner level that sits brilliantly alongside his raspy, early soul vocals – and the tight, jaunty rhythms of the tunes – which again are kind of a compression of older Nola modes, in a way that so many others would copy over the years. The set features a mix of hits like "I'm Walkin" and "Blueberry Hill", and great lesser known numbers like "Going To The River", "I'm In Love Again", "Bo Weevil", and "Whole Lotta Loving". ✨✧ Roland KirkDomino ... CD
Verve, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key early album from reedman Roland Kirk – at set that really has him strongly finding his voice in jazz, and transforming most of modern music in the process! The set's a perfect illustration of the way that Roland could swing with soul, yet still reach out with bold new ideas too – mixing up work on tenor sax, manzello, stritch, flute, and even nose flute – instruments often played at the same time, with this amazing multi-reed style that's really mindblowing – and which follows the soaring sheets of sound of the Coltrane generation, yet completely in its own way too! There's a sharp modern edge to most of the rhythms – thanks in part to the presence of Andrew Hill on piano and celeste on a few cuts – alongside from Vernon Martin on bass and Roy Haynes and Henry Duncan on drums – and a bit of additional piano from Wynton Kelly. The whole thing's amazing – one of those records that never fails to delight us – and titles include "3 In 1 Without The Oil", "ED", "Domino", "Meeting On Termini's Corner", and "A Stritch In Time". Salum Abdallah & Cuban Marimba BandNgoma Tanzania ... LP
Domino Sound, Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
Beautiful sounds from the short-lived musical legacy of Salum Abdallah and his Cuban Marimba Band – a group from Tanzania, but one who play with lots of influence from Latin Music – as you might guess from their name! And yet, unlike some of the larger, fuller Latin-influenced groups that were springing up on the West African scene of the 60s, this combo has a sound that's pretty stripped-down – often just heavy percussion and work on guitar – which appears to be a unique hybrid of the Cuban style of the instrument, which gets plucked and inflected in great ways next to the vocals! The well-done set might be the best we've seen so far from the Domino Sound label – and features tracks that include "Njoo Haraka", "Naumiya", "Cuba Cha Cha", "Kutenda Maovu", "Ngoma Iko Huku", "Macho Laini", "Masikitiko", and "Asiye Bahati Duniani". BuzzcocksAnother Music In A Different Kitchen ... CD
Domino, 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The fantastic first full album from The Buzzcocks – a group who'd already set the UK scene on fire with a flurry of amazing singles at the start of the punk generation! Here, they amazingly keep up all the great energy of their 7" releases – moving at a blistering pace throughout, with more focus than the Sex Pistols in their instrumentation, and a mixture of drum, bass, and guitar interplay that virtually became the blueprint for the whole west coast hardcore scene to come! Pete Shelly has never sounded so sinister, and the mighty Martin Rushnet puts the whole thing together with beautifully lean production – on classics that include "Fast Cars", "No Reply" "Get On Our Own", "I Don't Mind", "Autonomy", "Love Battery", "I Need", "Moving Away From The Pulsebeat", and "Fictionromance". BuzzcocksDifferent Kind Of Tension ... CD
Liberty/Domino, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The third album from the great Buzzcocks – one of the most fiercely melodic bands of the punk era, and one of the best bands for tuneful, yet barbed songwriting of the late 70s, period! Different Kind Of Tension is a pretty accurate title for this set, the last of the first wave of the group's career, with weird electronic flourishes and artier sounds to be found than the furiously straightforward previous couple of records. It's not as radical of a change of pace as, say, Wire's progress from the first to third albums, but a different kind of tension, as they say. Titles include "Mad Mad Judy", "You Say You Don't Love Me", "Hollow Inside", "I Believe", "Radio Nine", "Paradise", "Sitting Round At Home", and "I Don't Know What To Do With My Life". CD

Domino, 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
It's impossible to go wrong with The Buzzcocks during their early, and all-too-short years of greatness – and this fantastic second album is head and shoulders above work from most of their classic contemporaries on the UK scene! At a time when the group had already conquered the world of the punk rock single – they completely knock it out of the park with a full length set like this – really burning on all cylinders with loads of tight, sharp, hook-heavy tracks – then getting even more inventive and expressive with their guitars, at a level that feels like it's setting the scene for all the UK fuzz to come in the next decade! Titles include their classic "Ever Fallen In Love" – plus "Real World", "Sixteen Again", "ESP", "Walking Distance", Love Is Lies", "Nostalgia", "Late For The Train", "Operators Manual", and "Nothing Left". Cinematic OrchestraTo Believe ... CD
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. Titles include "To Believe", "A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life", "A Promise", "Zero One/This Fantasy", "The Workers Of Art", and "Wait For Now/Leave The World". CD

Beth Gibbons & Polish National Radio Symphony OrchestraHenryk Gorecki – Symphony No 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs) (180 gram pressing with DVD & download) ... LP
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $35.99 38.98
An incredible combination of talents – all with results that are even greater than the sum of its parts – as the voice of Beth Gibbons fronts Symphony No 3 by Henryk Gorecki, all beautifully conducted by the hands of Krzystof Penderecki! Somehow, there's a quality here that's really transcendent of all three creative talents involved – a work that's got plenty of depth, but maybe not all the darkness you might expect – not just because Gibbons' vocalizations create this very human angle, but also because Penderecki also seems to be working from a more alive tonal palette – at least more than we're used to – using the symphony with these quietly building waves of sound – which, mixed with the voice, almost makes the whole thing feel like some more ambitious project from 4AD. Tewolde ReddaEritrea's Guitar Pioneer – Singles 1970 to 1973 ... LP
Mississippi/Domino Sound, Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99
Very cool work from this enigmatic Ethiopian guitarist – a musician whose sound is an important part of the same golden years covered by the Ethiopiques series! Tewolde Redda plays both conventional electric guitar, and an electrified version of the more traditional krar (kirar), which is used here with all of these wonderful lines and sounds – really a much more flexible range than a more conventional guitar – or maybe a bit like a conventional guitar in which someone's really working the whammy bar too! The set brings together some of his most important tracks from the early 70s – singles originally issued on Philips and other labels – with titles that include "Wuba", "Ab Tequai Kerebi", "Kab Nab", "Telsemki", "Gamey", "Monona", "Hidri", and "Kirar Mistequane". Comes with a nice booklet of notes, too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousRemolino De Oro – Coastal Cumbias From Colombia's Discos Fuentes 1961 to 1973 ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Domino Sound, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Old school cumbia tunes – with plenty of raw rhythms and acoustic instrumentation in the mix! The package is a wicked batch of rare numbers from Colombia's legendary Discos Fuentes – most of which are from the early and mid 60s, recorded at a time when the imprint was really making some great waves in Latin music – coming up with a regional sound that was quite different than the popular New York modes of the time – and than the host of other scenes that tried to copy it! Instead, the tunes here work in these romping rhythms that really get to the heart of the cumbia vibe – often touched with a blend of jazz inflections and folkloric instrumentation, wrapped up beautifully together. Titles include "Lorenza" by Los Gavilanes De La Costa, "Cumbia Costena" by Alejandro Duran, "Ocaso Marino" by Los Satelites, "La Pollera Colora" by Los Corraleros De Majagual, "Remolino De Oro" by Abel Antonio Villa, and "Al Amanecer" by Los Cumbiamberos De Pacheco. ✨✧ Cinematic OrchestraMa Fleur ... LP
Domino, 2007. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Moody, ethereal work from Cinematic Orchestra – possibly their most "cinematic" album to date – and a rich soundscape of deeply textured, slow-building tunes! Some of the darkness of previous records is nicely subdued here – and most of the sounds rise slowly from the bottom, structured from instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, acoustic bass, drums, guitars, and a fair bit of strings – used gently, but effectively to really bring a sense of flow to the record. There's a bit of vocals on the record – sung by Fontella Bass, Patrick Watson, and Lou Rhodes – but these are often mixed into the other sounds strongly, almost used as an additional instrument within the larger orchestrations. Titles include "That Home", "Familiar Ground", "Ma Fleur", "Music Box", "Time & Space", "As The Stars Fall", "Into You", and "Breathe" – and the whole thing comes in a very visually-stimulating package! John Carter & Bobby BradfordFlight For Four ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
Spectacular work from one of the most groundbreaking groups of its time – the legendary John Carter/Bobby Bradford Quartet – quite possibly the hippest thing going in the LA scene of the late 60s! The group includes Carter on alto and tenor, Bradford on trumpet – working together in these amazing lines that have both players running off together in a style that's free, but often quite rhythmic – spurred on to move past the new freedoms unlocked by the Ornette Coleman group a few years before! Yet the vibe here is very different than Ornette, too – given the bold, righteous power that comes through in the voices of both players – working here at a level that seems to blow away just about anything else going on in the American avant garde at the time. The group has just two more players to round out its amazing sound – Tom Williamson on bass, and Bruz Freeman (brother of Von and George!) on drums – and all tracks are long and free, yet also fragile and intimate – with an almost painterly sense of beauty and emotion that stands in stark contrast to much of the avant work of the time coming out of the east coast. Titles include "Domino", "Abstractions For Three Lovers", "Woman", and "The Second Set". CD

Dreamy sounds from the legendary Michel Legrand – working here in a mode that's maybe a bit more lush and romantic than some of his later soundtrack work – yet at a level that's still head and shoulders above most of his 50s instrumental contemporaries! The set's got a melancholy vibe throughout – that sense of leaving that not only evokes a visitor having to head home after a trip in Paris, but also all the sadness and loss that the city experienced during the wartime years as well – even later, as American Gis had to head home – and were an obvious market for a record like this in the US! Tracks include "Bonjour Paris", "French Can Can", "Le Mer", "Two Loves Have I", and "A Paris Dans Chaque Faubourg". Raw New Orleans soul from Overton "Smiley" Lewis – one of the city's big stars in the 50s R&B years, and a singer who arguably set the stage for later deep soul to come! A few years before, and Lewis might have been more of a blues singer – but here, he's working with some strong Nola piano lines and lightly loping rhythms – in a mode that's vaguely in the Fats Domino side of the universe, but a lot more raw and stripped-down too – from the performance to the production! VariousBattleground Korea – Songs & Sounds Of America's Forgotten War (4CD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Early 50s. New Copy 4CD ... $74.99 129.99
A totally wonderful package – and one that will have you throwing away all the Vietnam Rock compilations you have in your collection! This set unearths a massive amount of music that was created during the Korean war – filled with themes of sadness and loss that most folks wouldn't ascribe to wartime music until a decade later – the kinds of songs that represent a really sharp change from the patriotic, triumphant songs that were usually written in previous wartime situations. The variety of music is wonderful, and served up in the best Bear Family tradition – with a surprisingly strong amount of rare blues material, mixed with hillbilly cuts, gospel, R&B material, and other styles too – almost all of it nicely away from the mainstream! The overall package is wonderful, too – a heavy, oversized hardcover book – 160 pages that offer up track-by-track notes on the music, with full color photos, label scans, and lots more vivid images. The book alone is almost worth the price – but you also get 4CDs, with 121 tracks by artists who include Dave Bartholomew, Lightnin Hopkins, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Revelers, Jimmie Osborne, Arthur Crudup, Ray Snead, Edna McGriff, Hank Penny, Jean Shepard, Emmit Slay, Sherman Blues Johnson & His Clouds Of Joy, Billy Mize, Elton Britt, Steve Rogers, Oscar Brand, JB Lenoir, Delmore Brothers, Ernest Tubb, The Gospel Pilgrims, Fats Domino, Max Bailey, BB King, and many more! The classic debut full length from the combined members of the legendary Hieroglyphics collective! For as long as individual members and like Del Tha Funky Homosapien and affiliated groups like Souls Of Mischief had been dominating discussions about Bay Area hip hop, you had to wonder how they'd rein it all in for the a consistent group effort, but it may be that veteran wisdom that makes it such a winning effort. Some of the tracks hew closer to the older Hiero sound introduced by Del and the Souls of Mischief on their classic first couple of LPs, and some of the tracks have a grittier late 90s feel – and it's a consistently strong effort to this day. ✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – Twinight's Lunar Rotation (4LP box set – with 13 bonus tracks) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 4LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
The best look at Chicago's legendary Twinight label that we've ever seen – a massive set that goes way past the obvious hits, and really digs into the heart and soul of this unique little record company! Twinight is best known as the home of Syl Johnson during his legendary run of funky soul singles at the end of the 60s – but the company was also home to a lot of other great talent during the same stretch – harmony vocal groups, sweet soul singers, funky combos, and more – all of which you'll hear in this incredible little set! (And in fact, the set does such a great job of presenting the other artists on Twinight, that it leaves out Syl Johnson entirely – so the package is a 100% non-Syl set – which is ok with us, because you can always get Johnson's work on other reissues.) The Numero Group have really outdone themselves this time around – using their careful ear to pull out the best lost bits from Twinight, remastered here with wonderful sound – and the heavy inner sleeves of the LPs have notes that tell the story of the label, and also includes loads of vintage photos. The set's a must-have for any fan of quality funk or soul – and the package includes a whopping 53 titles that include "Goin Man Huntin" by Jo Ann Garrett, "I've Made Up My Mind" by Josephine Taylor, "A New Day" by The Notations, "Nevermore" by Renaldo Domino, "Yesterday's Mistakes" by Jimmy Jones, "I'll Always Love You" by Velma Perkins, "Life Walked Out" by Mist, "Put Out The Fire by Mystiques, "You & Me Baby" by Kaldirons, "Rosemarie" by Dynamic Tints, "Remind Me" by Schiller Street Gang, "Is It Meant To Be" by Krystal Generation, "Pardon My Innocent Heart" by Nate Evans, "Package Of Love (part 1)" by Dynamic Tints, "The Devastator" by Stormy, "Mama" by Annette Poindexter, "Pass It On (part 1)" by Pipes Of Peace, "My Sunshine Girl" by Radiants, "Let Me Come Within" by Renaldo Domino, "Soul Strokes" by Sidney Pinchback, and "Can You Find Me Love" by Harrison & The Majestic Kind. 4LP set is beautiful – packaged in a special box, and with 13 bonus tracks not on the CD version – plus updated liner notes, more photos, and a full Twinight singles discography! ✨✧ Art Farmer/Benny Golson JazztetAnother Git Together ... CD
Mercury (Japan), 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite records ever from the legendary Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet – and a rare later date, recorded after their more famous albums for Chess! The lineup here is a bit unusual – in that a young Grachan Moncur III is in the combo on trombone – really adding some deep, soulful tones to the music – in ways that are very different than his famous Blue Note performances – but which really shape the sound of the music here wonderfully! Harold Mabern's on piano – again bringing in a different feel to this record for the group, with some lyrical undercurrents that are beautiful – and the rest of the lineup features Roy McCurdy on drums and Herb Lewis on bass – in addition to the sublime trumpet of Art Farmer and tenor of Benny Golson. Titles include one of the best versions of "Along Came Betty" that we've ever heard – plus the tracks "Domino", "Another Git Together", "Reggie", and "Space Station. CD

Nighthawk/Omnivore, 1992. Used ... $9.99
A later classic from the legendary Justin Hinds – reunited here with his Dominoes group, in a musical legacy that stretches back to the early 60s! Despite the date of the set, the production is very classic and nicely understated – no attempt to make Hinds a contemporary superstar, but instead to revel in that unique vocal style he'd been bringing to Jamaican music for the previous two decades – finally given a chance to flower again in its best setting! The backing group is great – Earl Chinna Smith on guitar, Carlton Barrett on drums, and Aston Barrett on bass – all working in a mode that sounds laidback, but which is also incredibly precise – really bringing great energy to songs that include "Miss Wendell", "Book Of History", "Weeping Eyes", "In The Jungle", "Sweet Lorraine", "The Rainbow", and "Get Ready Rock Steady". CD features 10 bonus tracks – including "Meditation", "Valley Of Reality", "Wolf & Sheep", and unissued version and dub tracks of songs on the album! CD

Material recorded live on WBAI in Maryland, and featuring Tyler playing solo, in a very haunting vein. Tyler plays baritone on 2 tracks – "Tale Of Bari Red" and "Sixty Minute Man", the latter an almost indistinguishable version of the big hit for The Dominoes from the early 50s. VariousGreatest Jamaican Beat/Tommy McCook & The Supersonics Soul Rocksteady (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A pair of killer albums from the rocksteady years – back to back in a single set, with a heck of a lot of bonus tracks too! First up is the compilation Greatest Jamaican Beat – also titled Rocksteady Baba Boom Time – seminal Duke Reid productions from the key rocksteady years – and a set that shows just how much the rhythm was changing things on the Jamaican scene, both at a vocal and instrumental level! There's a slow-loping vibe to most of these tracks – an approach that really sets the scene for the reggae explosion to come – yet most of the instrumentation still has the strong horn work of the ska/blue beat generation, and even some of the jazzier work of the Kingston scene at the start of the 60s – thanks in large part to Tommy McCook, who plays a fair bit on the set. Titles include "Tommy's Rock Steady", "Hot Rock", "Soul Serenade", and "Down On Bond Street" by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics – plus the killer "Baba Boom" by The Jamaicans, "Drink Wine" by The Techniques", "Release Me" by Phyllis Dillon, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" by The Paragons, and a great remake of "Hey Leroy Your Mama's Calling You" by Sam Jones. The second half of the set features a record completely devoted to work from the great Tommy McCook and his Supersonics group – instrumental rocksteady gems that are filled with plenty of twists and turns! McCook was one of the sharpest saxophone players on the Kingston scene in the 60s – and his varied styles and sounds here are completely incredible – really blowing away contemporary recordings by King Curtis or Jr Walker, partly because Tommy also knows when to bring in just the right current of jazz. Titles include "Soul Rock", "Starry Night", "Zazuka", "Train To Ska-Thedral", "What Now My Love", "Sir Don", "Saboo", and "Never To Be Mine". 2CD set features 26 bonus tracks – 13 more by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics – and more by Norman Grant, The Gladiators, Jamaicans, Justin Hinds & The Dominos, Three Tops, Eric Morris, Treasure Isle Boys, and Gloria & Franklin. VariousRisky Blues ... LP
King, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Not really "risky", but "risque" – someone must have spelled the title wrong! Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the postwar R&B market, and a company who wasn't afraid to do what it took to make a knockout record! In the case of these tracks, the singers often hit some fairly suggestive material – often hidden in early 50s innuendo, but barely so – with a vibe that's often nastier than even the most hardcore rockabilly sounds to come! The music here has its roots in blues, but is inflected with plenty of jazz, and the presence of the singers often point the way towards soul music – especially the James Brown crowd that would later rise at the same label. Features work by Todd Rhodes, Bullmoose Jackson, The Dominoes, Robert Henry, Wynonie Harris, Fluffy Hunter, Lucky Millinder, The Midnighters, and The Swallows. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some light wear, but is nice overall.)

Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Four albums' worth of vintage ska from the Jamaican scene – presented here with a heck of a lot of bonus tracks too! These tracks are the real deal – some of the earliest tracks to be circulated under the name of the new style – and the sorts of songs that just about everyone tried to copy right off the bat, and kept on trying to match for decades more! The work all comes from the magical fingers of Duke Reid, of the Treasure Island label – and there's a fair bit of jazz in the mix too, as these groups are overflowing with talented musicians who were playing straighter jazz just a few years before. The package features the full albums Birth Of Ska, Latin Goes Ska, The Skatalite, and Don Drummond's Greatest Hits – plus 19 more bonus tracks – with work by Duke Reid's All Stars, Don Drummond, Botty & Bonny, Rico Rodriguez, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, Owen & Leon Silvera, Eric Morris, Roland Alphonso, Clive & Naomi, The Richards Brothers, Baby Brooks, and many others. 58 tracks in all! Whoppers indeed – a killer collection of vocal group material from the 50s – issued here in a classic package with a great "juvenile delinquent" cover! Titles include "Sweethearts On Parade" and "Take Me Back To Heaven" by The Dominoes, "Marie" and "Sugar Lump" by The Four Tunes, "Crying In The Chapel" and "It's Too Soon To Know" by The Orioles, and "Green Eyes" and "I'll Always Be In Love With You" by The Ravens. Blue Note, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record that was one of the highest points of Donald Byrd's career! The album's the third one he cut with producer/arranger Larry Mizell – and of all Byrd's work with Mizell, this one's the funkiest, the tightest, the most soulful, and the most perfectly realized vision of the smooth jazz funk sound that the team were aiming at. Every track is a winner – and the album glides along with a slippery sinewy groove, never pausing for a weak moment or a misplaced note, shimmering with pride in its own genius. Byrd's trumpet soars over the top, banking gracefully over waves of funky drums, spacey keyboards, and extremely well-placed vocals – all brought together perfectly by Mizell, with a tightly fused style that few people have ever been able to match in the studio since! Tracks include "Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)", "Dominoes", "Wind Parade", "Places & Spaces", and "Night Whistler". CD
