Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie & OthersGiants Of Jazz – Recorded Live At The Victoria Theatre In London ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
This session shouldn't work, but it does – and beautifully! By all means, an album that includes Diz, Art Blakey, Monk, and Sonny Stitt playing together should be a first-rate snoozer, with hackneyed performances of common-denominator material that they can all get their hooks around – but instead, it's an amazing bit of work that has all players hitting some of their best moments of the 70's! Diz has that great deep 70's funk sound in his trumpet, Stitt's solos are razor sharp, and Blakey's drums have a good snap to them, and were recorded extremely well, despite the fact that this was a live session. All tracks are long, and the record includes great versions of "Tin Tin Deo", "Night In Tunisia", "Allen's Alley", "Blue Monk", "Woody N You", and "Tour De Force". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green and red Rockefeller label pressing. Cover has a small cutout notch.)

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & The Mitchell Ruff Duo ... CD
Mainstream/Solid (Japan), 1972. Used ... $9.99
Wild – but pretty darn wonderful stuff! Dizzy's recording here in one of his sparest settings ever – blowing trumpet with accompaniment from the duo of Willie Ruff, bass and French horn, and Dwike Mitchell, piano – working in a mode that's really cool, really stripped down, and which has an amazingly understated tone! Given that the album has two horns, bass, and piano – and none of those all at the same time, with no other drums or instrumentation – the format is really amazing. Add to that the fact that the tracks are often quite long, and you get a sweet and introspective side of Diz (and the Mitchell Ruff Duo) that you might not have otherwise heard! Titles include "Con Alma", "Blues People", "Bella Bella", and "Dartmouth Duet". CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie Reunion Big Band 20th & 30th Anniversary ... LP
MPS, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
Tremendous live work from Dizzy Gillespie – and one of his few big band sessions from the time! The album has Dizzy recreating his bigger group sound of the 50s – but with a groove that's much more lively, open, and swinging – very much in keeping with the MPS big band style of the late 60s, which is no surprise given that the album was recorded for the label! Players here are all great – and include Jimmy Owens, Dizzy Reece, Tom McIntosh, Curtis Fuller, Chris Woods, and Sahib Shihab – bursting out with strong solos on some very long tracks! Titles include a beautiful 10 minute reading of "Con Alma", plus "The Things Are Here", "Things To Come", and "Frisco", a great one by Mike Longo, who's also with Dizzy's group at this point! LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label German pressing. Label has a small bit of pen, but is nice overall.)

Dizzy GillespieGillespiana/Carnegie Hall Concert ... CD
Verve, Early 60s. Used ... $5.99
A great burner from Diz – and one that features a large group, long tracks, and some stellar early work from Lalo Schifrin! Schifrin was in Diz's group at the time, playing piano and contributing fantastic Latin-tinged arrangements that gave the band a whole new life. Other players on this session include Candido, Leo Wright, Julius Watkins, and Willie Rodriguez – and the tracks include "Africana", "Blues", and "Panamerica". An incredible live set from Dizzy Gillespie – one that has him working in stunning big band mode, but with all the depth and agility of a small combo! The set features variations on a number of classic Gillespie themes – including "Kush", "Manteca", "Ool Ya Koo", and "Tunisian Fantasy (Night In Tunisia)" – recast with that ever-growing Latin influence that Dizzy was picking up in the 60s, supported strongly by the presence of a young Lalo Schifrin, who plays piano on the set. Horn players include Dizzy, Clark Terry, and Nick Travis on trumpets; Gunter Schuller and Jim Buffington on French Horns; Leo Wright on sax and flute; and Don Butterfield on tuba – supported by rhythm from Schifrin on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Charles Lumpkin on drums. Tunes are awash in soulful solos and deeply colored hues – and titles include "Manteca", "This Is The Way", "Kush", "Ool Ya Koo", and "Tunisian Fantasy". CD

A fantastic bit of late 60's funk, and a surprisingly slammin' record from Dizzy! The album's got tight, hard, choppy funk arrangements from Ed Bland – who went onto to do some great work at the Perception label – and the group features James Moody blowing hard lean funky solos right next to Diz, in the way that he'd do on some of his own funk work from the same time. The record is wonderful all the way through – killer heavy drums, heavy electric bass, searing sax solos from Diz and Moody – all produced with a mad mad full-on funk sound that will make your jaw drop! A classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Limelight/Trip, 1962. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wickedly great album from Dizzy Gillespie – one of his most striking sessions of the early 60s, and a perfect blend of his Latin and modern modes! The album features an extended suite – composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin, who'd just begun working with Dizzy at the time, and who was inflecting his sound with a lot of South American grooves. The work's played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Titles include "The Chains", "The Swords", "The Empire", and "The Legend Of Atlantis". LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet slow and groovy funk LP recorded by Dizzy for the Perception label! The record is similar to his other LPs from the time in that it's got a cool electric feel that you don't really associate with Diz. The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga" and "Diddy Wa Diddy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieHave Trumpet Will Excite ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Diz breaks past his bop playing, takes a bit of a turn towards swing-based material, and also hits this nice rolling groove that gives a bit of a peek at the way he'd sound in the 60's, when he had Lalo Schifrin on piano, and more of a Latin sound. He's backed here by Junior Mance on piano, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums. Given the soul jazz leanings of the group, the set's a lot hipper than you'd expect from Verve at the time, and is certainly worthy of the use of the word "excite" in the title. The tracks are all standards, but the group grooves openly, and makes a heck of a lot out of the material. Titles include "My Man", "St. Louis Blues", and "Woody'n You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy GillespiePortrait Of Duke Ellington ... LP
Verve, 1960. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A portrait of Duke, done by Dizzy – and one that's got a whole different feel than you might think! Gillespie's working here with arrangements by a young Clare Fischer – who takes Ellington's themes and recasts them with an even deeper sense of color and tone – one that pushes the already-modern themes of the numbers into a whole new realm of sound, and uses the horn passages to carve things out a lot differently than Duke might have done! The result is a wonderfully striking session – one with familiar melodies that unfold in a whole new way – and which showcases some great phrasing from Dizzy, over rhythms by a combo that features Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Charlie Persip – playing alongside a group of larger horns. Titles include "Perdido", "Caravan", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", and "Chelsea Bridge". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, & Sonny StittFor Musicians Only ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little record – one that's greater even than the sum of its three mighty parts! Although we've always felt that some of the "all star" sets on Verve could sometimes be a bit too "easy", we're always very big fans of the few that feature strong performances from Dizzy Gillespie – as they have a tight bop groove that lets all the musicians find their right place, and solo in wonderful interplay with each other! Here, Dizz and Sonny Stitt provide the core of a group that also includes Stan Getz on tenor – and the three of them are given four nice long tracks to work through in a relaxed seamless fashion – moving openly and wonderfully over tunes that include "Dark Eyes", "We", and "Be Bop". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy In Greece ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Dizzy's in Greece, looking very cool in a fez on the cover – and really wailing hard with a larger group that includes Billy Mitchell, Charlie Persip, Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, and Phil Woods! The mode here is still quite boppish, despite the larger size of the ensemble – but Dizzy also manages to bring in some of those wonderfully rich colors that were coming into his later work – a tonal depth that's completely amazing, and which pushed Gillespie way past his simple roots of the 40s, into a space that made him one of the most expressive jazz leaders of the 50s. The horn charts alone are totally great – and Dizzy's got a wonderful talent for letting the key soloists step out with a really strong voice in the set – and although short, the tunes have an incredible reach overall. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Yesterdays", "Groovin' High", "Hey Pete", "Arnnie's Dance", and "Groovin' for Nat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Verve Records Inc pressing with trumpeter logo, larger text, and deep groove. Labels have address stickers. Cover has some aging, mostly split top seam with some tape remnants, splitting in the spine and bottom seam, and a bit of pen on back.)

Dave Douglas works here in a group with two trumpets – Dave Adewumi on the other horn in the lead, but playing with a voice that's deeply distinct from the leader! The group's got that sort of fresh approach that seems to make each different record by Douglas a very different project – and the rest of the lineup includes Matt Stevens on guitar, Fabian Almazan on piano, Carmen Rothwell on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – building things up slowly, but in this way that sometimes has them circling the two trumpets, sometimes coming together more directly. The album's got a subtitle of "Dizzy Gillespie at zero gravity" – and oddly, that's a bit of the feel of the record. Dana GillespieWhat Memories We Make – The Complete Mainman Recordings 1971 to 1974 (Weren't Born A Man/Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle/bonus tracks) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A pair of great albums from singer Dana Gillespie – and a huge amount of bonus material too, including some rare promo and demo tracks that have never been available to the public! The set kicks off with the Weren't Born A Man album – a real turning point in the career of Dana Gillespie – a singer who started out as a British folkie in the 60s, but who really transformed through a host of different modes as the 70s moved in – including a key role in the long-running Catch My Soul stage show, and an intimate friendship with David Bowie! Gillespie's not exactly like Bowie, but on the record she does find a very special, intimate space of her own – helped partly by the production and arrangements of Mick Ronson, who also works with some of the Spiders Of Mars in the backing – and also in part by Bowie, who lets Dana sing his great tune "Andy Warhol" here in a version that's maybe even better than his own! Yet Gillespie is definitely at the helm throughout – a superb songwriter, and a great singer too – intimate one minute, bold the next, and quite far from her roots in folk. Titles include "Andy Warhol", "Weren't Born A Man", "Mother Don't Be Frightened", "All Gone", "Eternal Showman", "Dizzy Heights", and "Stardom Road (parts 1 & 2)". Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle is the second album that Dana Gillespie recorded for the Mainman productions label – and one that really has her stepping out and finding a voice that's all her own! Dana's a bit hard to peg stylistically – somewhat rock, but with occasional gentleness that's borrowed from her folk roots – often given a slight glam twist in the production, but not really a glam singer at all – in part because she's often got some deeper currents in her lyrics! Gillespie's got this strength in the lead that should have made her a much bigger star – an ability to step sideways to different modes from track to track, yet make you feel like the whole thing is very much part of her own master plan. Titles include "Get My Rocks Off", "Really Love The Man", "Hold Me Gently", "Pack Your Bags", "Getting Through To Me", and "Wanderlust". 2CD set features a huge amount of interesting material – including 5 tracks from Dana's 1971 promo record that she shared with David Bowie, 5 more demos from October of 1974, after her second album – but never issued – the original demo for "Andy Warhol", an outtake of "Man Size Job", different Mick Ronson arrangements for "Lavender Hill" and "Never Knew", and the Libido single tracks "Hold On To Your Fire" and "Weren't Born A Man". That's the Modern Jazz Sextet – not the Modern Jazz Quartet – although the group definitely borrows a bit of energy from the MJQ, and some personnel too! The group was only put together for this date – and combines the subtle touches of MJQ members John Lewis on piano and Percy Heath on bass, with some harder-edged, hardbop-driven sounds from Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Sonny Stitt on alto, Skeeter Best on guitar, and Charlie Persip on drums! The set's got an open, easygoing feel – that loose Verve studio mode of the time – which stems from their jam session modes, but is a bit tighter overall – in ways that really help the players find their energy together in the tunes. Titles include 2 standards, in the usual Verve style – "Mean To Me" and a ballad medley of "Old Folks", "What's New" and "How Deep Is The Ocean" – plus 3 originals – "Blues For Bird", "Tour De Force", and "Dizzy Meets Sonny". Kenny BarronWhat If? ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... $13.99 About May 26, 2021
Although Kenny Barron's always a heck of a great musician on his own or in a piano trio, we're especially partial to his work in groups with horn players – and this album is a great example of that preference! Kenny first came to fame working with Dizzy Gillespie in the 60s, and since that point, he's always had a tremendous ear for the right tones and shadings from horns needed to augment his own soulful vision on the keys – a way of setting up the other players in the group to build on the well-crafted Barron lines, and take them even further into the stratosphere. This set follows that format, and draws great energy from Wallace Roney on trumpet and John Stubblefield on tenor – both at their younger best, and working alongside Kenny's piano with Cecil McBee on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. The lineup sparkles most on the 4 longer Barron numbers on the album – "Phantoms", "What If", "Voyage", and "Lullabye" – all of which take us back to the brilliance of Kenny's best Muse albums of the 70s. Other tracks feature smaller, more piano-centrist groupings – on tracks that include "Dexterity", "Close To You Alone", and "Trinkle Trinkle". CD

Dusko GoykovichBrandenberg Concert – Dusko Goykovich With Strings ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2013. New Copy ... $16.99 About May 26, 2021
One of the greatest trumpeters on the European scene of the past few decades – heard here in a completely sublime setting! Dusko Goykovich has played in many styles and many ways, but hasn't ever done a date with full strings before – a long-overdue placement for his wonderful tone on trumpet – shimmering out front of a larger ensemble, in the manner of classic "with strings" dates by Dizzy Gillespie or Art Farmer! Altoist Peter King arranged the album – and titles are all originals by Dusko, some of which you might know from earlier records – reworked here beautifully for the new setting. King also solos on a handful of tracks too – a rich voice that provides a nice balance with Dusko's trumpet. Strings are never overdone, and the album's always got a nice swing from a core rhythm trio that features Renato Chicco on piano. Titles include "Good Old Days", "Handful O Soul", "Danca Comigo", "St Germain Des Pres", "Adriatica", "In My Dreams", and "I Miss You So". CD

Collectables, 1972/1973. Used ... $8.99
Although not as classic as his "classic" recordings, these two albums recorded for Perception in the early 70s prove that Johnny was capable of stretching his bag, and not just a play-it-safe interpreter of syrupy ballads. Like a lot of the jazz recordings on Perception at the time (by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Shirley Horn), this set's got an edge you wouldn't expect – with some very hip arrangements overall that really sound great – performed on the first album by a quartet that includes George Coleman on tenor and Herman Foster on piano, and on the second album by a group with Ken Ascher on keyboards and Jimmy Heath on tenor and flute. The set features interpretations of material that range from brilliant, to daring but off-track – and titles include "Sunday Sun", "Feelin' Groovy", "I've Got To Be Me", "Didn't We", "Summer Wind", and "Betcha By Golly Wow". Clef, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $14.99
An early Norm Granz production, before they were issued under the JATP moniker, though basically the same idea. In fact, this set would later get repackaged as a JATP side. As you'd expect, it's an all star cast, with a group that includes Flip Phillips, Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson and Buddy Rich. Side one is a blowing session entitled "Jam Blues" and side two is the "Ballad Medley" stringing together bits of "Tenderly", "I've Got The World On A String", "What's New", "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good","Don't Blame Me", "Imagination", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Body & Soul" and "She's Funny That Way". ✨✧ Mike LongoAwakening ... CD
Mainstream/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Killer electric piano work from the mighty Mike Longo – recorded at a time when he was definitely at the height of his powers! The album sports a rare Mainstream Records appearance from James Moody – who was a frequent partner of Longos on sessions at the time – particularly on some of Dizzy Gillespie's funky records – which bear a lot of similarity to the sharp-edged grooves on this one! The rhythm section is wonderfully tight, and a big part of the success of the set – as they keep things grooving with a slightly sharper edge than some of Longo's other records – thanks to bass from Ron Carter, drums from Mickey Roker, and even a bit of extra congas from Dizzy Gillespie, of all people! Other players include Moody on alto, tenor, and flute – plus Virgil Jones on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone. Titles include "Just To Let You Know", "A Piece Of Resistance", "The Awakening", "Pass It", and "Bitchin". CD

Riverside/Milestone, 1960. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Classic early Wes Montgomery – 2 Riverside sessions collected on one double LP, Movin' Along and Full House. Movin' Along features James Clay playing with the group, for the added bonus of a flute/tenor sound that you don't always get on Wes' guitar-heavy sessions. The record includes the nice groover "Movin' Along", plus "So Do It", "Sandu", and "Says You", which was written by Sam Jones, who plays bass on the session. Full House is another great set by Wes – recorded in a very lively live setting, with a quartet that includes Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. It's great to hear Griffin with Montgomery, and the two of them pair up nicely on the album's longer tracks – like "Full House" and "Cariba", both written by Montgomery, and the classic "Blue N Boogie" by Dizzy Gillespie. Sweet funky electric work from James Moody – and pretty darn nice too! The set was produced by Ed Bland, the force behind the funky James Moody (and Dizzy Gillespie) sessions for the Perception and GWP labels in years back – and at many levels, the feel here is similar to those great sets, but perhaps a bit more mellow overall. Moody's playing alto, tenor, and soprano saxes – in a small combo with Kenny Barron on keyboards, Roland Prince on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Emanuel Rahim on percussion. Titles include "Funky Jazz Walk", "A Funky Aura", "Keep It Greasy", "Pot Licka", and "A Statement". LP, Vinyl record album

Late Mongo – but great Mongo! The CD features work recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 – a wonderful jazz-based performance that was never issued at the time! Tracks are long and very open – stretching out with a soulful majesty that goes beyond even Mongo's excellent jazz sides for the Vaya label at the end of the 70s. Milton Hamilton plays some great electric piano on the tracks – and the tunes also have some excellent work on soprano sax, tenor, and flute by Doug Harris, a player we know little about, but who we really love on this set! Dizzy Gillespie and Toots Thielemans join in on one track, but the core group is the real power of the the album – grooving hard in a mix of jazz, Latin, and a slight bit of funk – served up on long tracks that include "Para Ti", "Come Candela", "Sofrito", "Pajaro Cantor", "Havana", and "Amanecer". One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by Les Spann – an extremely talented jazz player who worked a lot with Dizzy Gillespie in the 50s, and Quincy Jones in the 60s! Les plays both guitar and flute on the set – grooving soulfully in a mode that recalls the stylings of Frank Wess or Kenny Burrell (depending on the instrument), but which is handled here in an easily soulful mode that recalls the sound of Les Jazz Modes at times. ✨✧ Leo WrightSuddenly The Blues ... LP
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A record of incredible beauty from the great Leo Wright – and one that we'd never part with at all! Wright's one of those excellent players from the 60s who never really gets his due – largely because he was always hiding behind larger groups, and because he left the US in the decade for an extended stint in Europe. Still he cut some fantastic early work with both Dizzy Gillespie and Lalo Schifrin – and this album captures him right during the peak of that early period! The record features light lively backing from a quartet that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and some tracks have a beautifully groovy sound that's slightly bossa, slightly soul jazz. One of the best of these is Wright's great cover of "A Felicidade", but the record contains many other great moments, like "The Wiggler", "Tali", "Sassy Lady", and "Dionysis". LP, Vinyl record album

2 nice live sets – put together by Norm Granz, as a tour of the JATP all stars in Europe. Originally issued separately, but pretty much under the same title, the first LP brings together the hottest jazz stars of the day, and on this volume it includes Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, JJ Johnson, Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge. There's a great jamming take on "Bernie's Tune" and a sidelong riffing version of "All The Things You Are", plus "Swedish Jam". Argo, 1963. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A prime Argo gem from James Moody – and key proof that when he wanted to, he could be one of the hippest cats working in 60s jazz! The approach here is subtle, but amazing – a blend of hardbop with some of the more modern ideas that were coming up in the post-bop generation from the team of Moody and Dizzy Gillespie. The rhythms are quite complicated at times – very fresh and vibrant, but without any of the easy gimmicks that other 60s artists would fall into – like vamping soul jazz or borrowed bossa lines. Instead, working in a combo with a young Kenny Barron, Moody concentrates on fresh timings and complicated changes – modes that push his own work on alto, tenor, and flute far from expected territory – and which also features Barron on piano and organ, George Eskridge on guitar, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums. Tracks include "Zanzibar", "Dizzy", "Ole", "Sonnymoon For Two", and a nice version of "Fly Me To The Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Savoy, 1950s/2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Savoy jazz catalog gets the remix tradition – following nicely in the mode of similar projects on Verve or Blue Note! The work here is all pulled from classic bop sessions of the late 40s and 1950s – key tracks that defined the sound of Savoy back in the day, but cut down here to their core elements – then laid out over more contemporary rhythms for the modern dancefloor! The best numbers actually preserve some sense of jazz soloing – an approach that we like better than other too-abstract remakes of older jazz on the market – and titles include "Moose The Mooche (Quantic rmx)" by Charlie Parker, "Night In Tunisia (DJ Jazzy Jeff rmx)" by Duke Jordan, "Lover Man (King Britt's Speakeasy mix)" by Dizzy Gillespie with Sarah Vaughan, "Minor Vamp (Basement Boys 12")" by Curtis Fuller, "Yardbird Suite (St Etienne mix)" by Herbie Mann, "Bohemia After Dark (Diamond D rmx)" by Cannonball Adderley, "Caravan (DJ Smashish rmx)" by Dizzy Gillespie, and "Movin Nicely (Eclipse rmx)" by Modern Jazz Quartet. The solo horn in the lead also gives the record a definite trumpet focus in its execution, and choice of tunes – which include excellent numbers like Art Farmer's "Punsu", Dizzy Gillespie's "Woody N You", and Duke Pearson's sublime "Is That So" – offered up here in homage to Lee Morgan's wonderful reading of the track on his Rajah album. Pelt also contributed the original "Shout" – alongside Wonsey's "Hey Jimmy" – and like most albums in this great series, the tracks are quite long – with loads of room for solo space! CD

Arguably THE classic Cal Tjader album of the 60s – a landmark album that crossed over equally into Latin, jazz, and mainstream audiences – and a stone cooker that's filled with smoking little grooves! The set's probably best known for its title track "Soul Sauce" – one of the biggest jazz hits of the 60s, and a catchy groover that was built around a riff from Dizzy Gillespie, but which also featured a groovier 60s sound, thanks to Cal's use of vibes. The whole album follows in similar format – and features great work by a core combo that includes Armando Pereza on congas, Lonnie Hewitt on piano, and Johnny Rae on drums. Mary/Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent album by Mary Lou Williams – a set recorded during the 70s period when she was mixing in a bit of funk with her jazz! The sound here is wonderful – quite different than other work you might know from Williams, and much more in the sort of groove you'd expect from Junior Mance, Ray Bryant, Ramsey Lewis, or other soul jazz-oriented pianists! Williams plays acoustic piano in a very hip trio with Mickey Roker on drums and Bob Cranshaw on electric bass – the latter of whom brings in this well-rounded, soul-drenched tone that's a lot like the bass work on some of Monty Alexander's own best albums from the 70s. And Williams herself is totally great too – playing with some slightly exotic tones at points, and with a really in-the-pocket groove at others. Funky tracks include "Intermission" and "Rosa Mae" – and other titles include "Ghost Of Love", "Medi II", "Zoning Fungus", and a great version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Olinga". CD also features 2 previously unreleased tracks – "Syl-O-Gism" and an alternate of "Gloria". CD

The overall groove is much more expanded from the first session – way past the standard of floating vocals, keys, and beats – into a realm of abstract jazz that really gets at the heart of the project! 14 tracks in all – with "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie remixed by Funky Lowlives, "Here's That Rainy Day" by Astrud Gilberto remixed by Koop, "Naima's Love Song" by Betty Carter remixed by DJ Spinna, "Fried Neckbones & Some Home Fries" by Willie Bobo remixed by Dan The Automator, "Soul Sauce" by Cal Tjader remixed by Fila Brasillia, "Do What You Wanna" by Ramsey Lewis remixed by Mr Scruff, "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair" by Nina Simone remixed by Jaffa, "Mama" by Hugh Masekela remixed by Metro Area, "Whatever Lola Wants" by Sarah Vaughan remixed by Gotan Project, "Blues For Brother George Jackson" by Archie Shepp remixed by Mondo Grosso, and "Brother Where Are You" by Oscar Brown Jr remixed by Matthew Herbert. An amazing package, and an amazing moment in the career of Charlie Parker – the beginning of his relationship with Verve Records producer Norman Granz – who really helped refine Bird's talents, and also open him up in some new creative directions! The material here originally came out on 10" LPs on the Mercury and Clef labels, but they're also the birth of the Verve Records sound too – top-shelf presentation, and care that Charlie Parker may not have been getting from previous labels like Dial or Savoy! The set features the first two volumes of Charlie Parker With Strings – amazing music that has Bird's sharp-edged alto soaring out over some modern string arrangements – really standard-setting experiments that so many others followed in years to come! Next is Bird & Diz – a sublime pairing with Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet. Charlie Parker Plays South Of The Border is a key cubop session – Bird's alto with Latin rhythms – an equally groundbreaking match as his strings sessions!
