Dizzy GillespieComposer's Concepts ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s/1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Nice 2LP set that brings together some of his most striking sessions of the early 60s recorded for Emarcy. This set includes pieces composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Titles include "The Conquerors", "The Chains", "The Swords", "The Empire", and "The Legend Of Atlantis". The set also features Diz playing tracks from Tom McIntosh, one of the scene's brightest arrangers at the time, and a talent who was looming large, thanks to support from folks like Diz and James Moody. Moody's in the group – blowing tenor with a quintet that includes Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and his tone is incredible, with a darkness that he'd rarely had before, and the whole group has a mixture of modern tones and soulful grooves that's beyond compare! Titles include "November Afternoon", "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After". Also included are songs from the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World. Mal Waldron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. The recording was made by his great group that included Kenny Barron and James Moody, and the titles include "The Pushers", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", and "Street Music". LP, Vinyl record album

Great great 2LP set that features some of Dizzy's incredible late 40s work for Bluebird! The set not only includes some killer bop material, of the sort that made Dizzy an instant fave, even with folks who hated Bird – but it also includes some of Dizzy's early cubop recordings, which mixed jazz soloing and Latin rhythms. There's a huge amount of titles here, and nearly all of them are the stuff of legend. Tracks include "Minor Walk", "Cubana Be", "Cubana Bop", "Algo Bueno", "Night In Tunisia", "Ow!", "Two Bass Hit", and "Guarachi Guaro". LP, Vinyl record album

GNP/Crescendo, 1948. Used ... $9.99
A legendary bit of cubop! Diz is playing here with the band that virtually invented Latin Jazz – the one that featured Chano Pozo on conga, plus great soloists like James Moody and Ernie Henry – all blowing beautifully in a style that's one of the most perfect realizations of the cubop Latin Jazz groove of the time! The recording was done live, but the quality's strong – and titles include "Good Bait", "Emanon", "Ool Ya Koo", and a classic reading of "Manteca"! CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & His Quintet En Concert – Olympia 24 Novembre 1965 ... CD
Europe 1/RTE, 1965. Used ... $6.99
Outstanding Dizzy Gillespie material – from one of his most overlooked periods! The time is the mid 60s, and after a few years of working with Lalo Schifrin in his group, Dizzy's changed his Latin bag from hard-edged Cubop to mellower more complicated Bossa and modal jazz. The result is some of the most sophisticated playing in Dizzy's career – hitched to a groove that's still filled with soul and fire, and which rolls on in a compelling way that always hooks us hard! The group features Kenny Barron on piano, and reed work by James Moody, one of the other great secrets of the mid 60s! Tracks are all long – and titles include "One Note Samba", "Con Alma", "Umh, Umh", and "Chega De Saudade". CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie At Newport ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good- ... $18.99
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! The ensemble here is plenty hip – with a young Lee Morgan joining Dizzy on trumpet, and a host of other great players who include Melba Liston and Al Grey on trombones, Benny Golson and Billy Mitchell on saxes, and rhythm from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Although big, the band often had the sharper groove of a small combo – and even when hitting some older moments from Gillespie's earlier years, they still kept a modern edge in their approach – thanks to arrangements by AK Salim, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy himself. Titles include "School Days", "I Remember Clifford", "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin". LP, Vinyl record album

Classic Savoy bop work from Diz – featuring some sides cut with the orchestra of Johnny Richards, plus some cut with the "Bepop (sic) Boys", a group that includes Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Dave Burns, and John Brown. The Richards sides are great – a bit more swinging than the ones he and Diz cut on Verve, but no less well-conceived. Titles include "Interlude In C", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "The Things I Love", "Moody Speaks", "For Hecklers Only", and "Boppin The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips/Nippon (Japan), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
It may have been recorded on the French Riviera – but the session's actually a killer batch of Latiny tinged tracks from Dizzy & Co – with with great arrangements by Lalo Schifrin! There's a wonderful 10 minute version of "Chega De Saudade", done as "No More Blues" to start it out, and it's got a great loping Latin vibe, in the manner of Dizzy's best sides from the 60s. Lalo's on piano, and the great Leo Wright is on flute and alto, with Tzigane Elek Bacsik on guitar, Chris White on bass, Ruby Collins on drums and Pepitoo Riestria on percussion. Other nice ones include "Long Long Summer", "Desafinado", and "Pau De Arara". A great album, and one not to pass up! CD

Ahhh . . . Diz in the 50s. What a great thing! He's post bop, post cubop, but still has all the best elements of those eras – wrapped up into a more complicated Latin-tinged style that's filled with warmth, humor, and some pretty compelling grooves. This set is one of Diz's best from the time – and it's got some tracks that are real classics in his book, like "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac", "Ungawa", "Lorraine", and "Constantinople". The group's small and hip – with Junior Mance on piano, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Sam Jones on bass, Lex Humphries on drums, and Chano Pozo on conga. LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A wicked bit of 70s funky fusion from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded with his old piano player from the 60s, Lalo Schifrin! Lalo arranged, conducted, and plays plenty of keyboards – giving the album a wicked groove that's a bit different than some of Dizzy's other 70s work – a bit fuller and more tightly arranged, but with all that heavy Schifrin funk firmly in place! The album's almost a blend of Dizzy's work for the Perception label and some of Lalo's soundtrack grooves – and titles include the dancefloor stormer "Unicorn", plus "Wrong Number", "Free Ride", and "Fire Dance". Verve, 1960. Very Good+ ... $19.99
One of the strongest sides to feature Diz's mid 50s format – a larger group than usual, an octet, with a more tightly arranged style that showed that he continued to develop as an artist long after the days of his early bop sides. The album's also noteworthy for demonstrating Dizzy's great talent for picking strong young talent – as the group features the writing and playing of Gigi Gryce and Benny Golson, plus work by Ray Bryant, Henry Coker, Tommy Bryant, and Charlie Persip. Tracks are short, but backed with that edgey energy that Gryce and Golson brought to their best work – and titles include "Blues After Dark", "Night At Tony's", "Smoke Signals", and "Shabozz". Dizzy Gillespie plays here with the great Don Byas on tenor sax – joining Diz on two different Parisian dates from early 1952, both of them pretty darn sweet! The first session here is quite unusual – in that it features Humberto Cano on congas – bringing in a bit of a Cubop groove to a few key numbers on the date – a few takes of "Afro Paris" which rank right up there with any of Dizzy's best modern experiments back home. Other players on the date include Arnold Ross on piano and Bill Clark on drums – and titles include "Hurry Home" and "Say Eh", both presented in two takes. Remaining material is by a group that features Byas on tenor, Hubert Fol on alto sax, and Bill Tamper on trombone – on titles that include "Dizzy Song", "Cripple Crapple Crunch", and "Somebody Loves Me". Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. The set's an essential one, because although you often hear references to this material, most of it was originally issued on 78s, and it's always pretty tough to find together like this – especially because the set's got great notes and session details. Solid State, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A weird batch of groovy tracks from Diz – more of a pop soul jazz instrumental set than a straight jazz one, recorded in 1969 with arrangements by Jimmy Mundy, who conducts a group with Paul Griffin, Billy Butler, and Jerome Richardson. As usual, Dizzy rises to any occasion – and brings out some great work for the album, grooving in a number of different modes as the moods of the tracks change with the backing colors of the band. Titles include a medley of "Aquarius" and "Let The Sun Shine In", plus "Exotica", "Besame Mucho", "Magic Tree", "This Girl's In Love With You", and "Galveston". Dizzy GillespieManteca ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1954. Used ... $24.99
One of Dizzy Gillespie's finest Afro-Cuban moments! The material on this album has been issued under a few different titles over the years, but this is the late 50s Manteca package – the one that features a beautiful cool orange cover, and a title that really gets at the Latin influences in the material. The centerpiece of the record is a side-long workout on the "Manteca" theme, played by Diz and a group that includes Lucky Thompson, Wade legge, Charlie Persip, and Jose Mangual – all grooving hard in a sound that virtually defines the term of cubop! The other tracks on the album are great too – versions of "Caravan", "Con Alma", and "Night In Tunisia" – all done in a Latin jazz mode, with some nice flute solos by Gilberto Valdes. CD

Limelight, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
A wickedly great album from Dizzy Gillespie – one of his most striking sessions of the early 60s, and a perfect blend of his Latin and modern modes! The album features an extended suite – composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin, who'd just begun working with Dizzy at the time, and who was inflecting his sound with a lot of South American grooves. The work's played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Dizzy GillespieNew Wave ... LP
Philips, 1962. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly in the 60s. Rhythms are percolated by the piano of Schifrin, guitar of Bola Sete, bass of Chris White, and some well-chosen added percussion work – and the overall groove is one of the best American takes on the bossa jazz sound of the time, delivered with wonderful horn work from Dizzy on trumpet, Leo Wright on flute and alto, and Charlie Ventura on tenor! Even familiar tunes are transformed by the sound – and titles include "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town", "Careless Love", "Taboo", "One Note Samba", "Pergunte Ao Joao", and "Chega de Saudade". Dizzy GillespiePortrait Of Duke Ellington ... LP
Verve, 1960. Very Good ... $13.99
A portrait of Duke, done by Dizzy – and one that's got a whole different feel than you might think! Gillespie's working here with arrangements by a young Clare Fischer – who takes Ellington's themes and recasts them with an even deeper sense of color and tone – one that pushes the already-modern themes of the numbers into a whole new realm of sound, and uses the horn passages to carve things out a lot differently than Duke might have done! The result is a wonderfully striking session – one with familiar melodies that unfold in a whole new way – and which showcases some great phrasing from Dizzy, over rhythms by a combo that features Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Charlie Persip – playing alongside a group of larger horns. Titles include "Perdido", "Caravan", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", and "Chelsea Bridge". LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet slow and groovy funk LP recorded by Dizzy for the Perception label! The record is similar to his other LPs from the time in that it's got a cool electric feel that you don't really associate with Diz. The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga" and "Diddy Wa Diddy". LP, Vinyl record album

If you like Dizzy Gillespie as much as us, you'll know that he kept on getting better and better as the years went on – continuing to evolve as a musician, into territory that's always very different than what he was giving the world a few years before! That's definitely the case here, on two live performances done for Dutch Radio in the late 70s – both of which feature a guitar as the key partner – with Rodney Jones on the first half, Ed Cherry on the second, and bass from Benjamin Brown and drums from the great Mickey Roker. Tracks are long, and open up in this really wonderful way – and the group is joined by percussionist Sheyvonne Wright on the second half, who also sings a bit too. There's a quality here that's much more in the best 70s work on the Muse label than you might expect – and titles include "Barcelona", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Toccata", "The Truth", "Night In Tunisia", "Manha De Carnaval", and Round Midnight". Further proof that the genius of Dizzy Gillespie knows no bounds, even in later years – as these two different radio performances feature Diz with very unique saxophonists – both of whom really transform the sound of the group! The first half of the set has Gillespie on trumpet with a young Paquito D'Rivera on soprano and alto sax – a young player really coming into his own here, in an unusual group that also features Canadian guitarist Ed Cherry, bassist Michael Howell, and drummer Ignacio Berroa – on titles that include the funky "Unicorn", plus "All The Things You Are" and "Cripple Crapple Crutch". The second half will be even more surprising to fans of avant jazz – as the legendary Sam Rivers joins the group on tenor and soprano sax – blowing straighter than on his free improv records, but definitely adding an edge! The rest of the group features Cherry and Berroa, with John Lee in on bass for Howell – and titles include "Tanga", "Manteca", and "Birk's Works". CD

The best tracks are long groovers that really show the group stretching out – especially on the album's 16 minute reading of Dizzy's classic "Kush", the title track "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac", and a great version of "Mas Que Nada"! Pablo, 1975. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a promo stamp obscured with a sticker in back and some heavy wear at the spine.)

Dizzy Gillespie & The Double Six Of ParisDizzy Gillespie & The Double Six Of Paris ... CD
Philips, 1963. Used ... $11.99
A rare 60s meeting of groovy talents from both sides of the Atlantic – and a record that matches the trumpet of Dizzy Gillespie with the hiply swinging vocals of The Double Six Of Paris! The group were a wonderfully groovy precursor to the Swingle Singers – and sung in a scatting approach to jazz vocals that was very much in the tradition of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but also drew inspiration from the earlier work of Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, and others. Their sound is great – much more 60s groovy than some other vocal groups – and pairing them with Dizzy gives this record an added punch that some of their other sessions are missing! Backing is small combo throughout – with either Bud Powell or Kenny Barron on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and James Moody on tenor – and with the presence of Diz, most of the material here is of bop orientation – taken at a fast and lively clip! Lalo Schifrin arranged the whole session too – and titles include "One Bass Hit", "Blue N Boogie", "Emanon", "Groovin High", "Ow", "The Champ", "Tin Tin Deo", "Hot House", and "Con Alma". CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... About November 17, 2021 (delayed)
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and Danilo Perez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. Titles include "Kush", "Tanga", "Dizzy Shells", "Night In Tunisia", "Tin Tin Deo", "Seresta", and "Samba For Carmen". CD

The second album in this series that captures the fire and spontaneity of the famous late 60s Sunday afternoon sessions at the Village Vanguard – recorded when that club was an important site for criss-crossing of styles and traditions, as you'll hear wonderfully in this set! The album features a sextet that includes Pepper Adams, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Richard Davis, Mel Lewis, and Garnet Brown – playing in an easy, open format that has them really stretching out on 3 long tracks. The focus here is on the solo work of the players, but there's also a surprisingly great sense of cohesiveness and lyrical interplay as well. Titles include "Tour De Force", "On The Trail", and "Sweet Gorgia Brown". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1957. Used ... $6.99
A great little jam session from Verve – done in a style that's looser and freer than some of the JATP albums, and with a smaller group overall! Players include Stan Getz, Paul Gonsalves, and Coleman Hawkins on tenor, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, and Wynton Kelly on piano – plus bass by Wendell and drums from JC Heard. There's a rougher, more spontaneous quality here than even on some of the other Norman Granz jam session records – a feel that's almost more "real" overall, as if you were catching the players all working together in a club. Each side features 2 long tracks – one upbeat and one mellow – and the tenor interplay alone is worth the price of the record! Titles include long takes on "Dizzy Atmosphere" and "The Way You Look Tonight" – plus 2 additional ballad medleys! CD

Not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. A great little live set from the time that Dizzy had Lalo Schifrin playing piano in his group – and one that we think was recorded much earlier (early 60s?) than the 1979 date on the cover! The tracks are long and Latin-inflected – very much like the studio work the pair did together on the excellent New Wave album for Philips – with Dizzy stretching out in spacious lines on trumpet that are miles from his earlier bop days – as Schifrin pushes the tunes with elliptical piano lines that have a nice bossa undercurrent. Leo Wright plays alto and flute in the group, and Joe Carroll does sing on the one bop-styled track. Titles include "Kush", "Pau De Arara", "Long Long Summer", "Lorraine", and "Desafinado". Diz and Roy come together in a nice blend of two traditions – blowing in a relaxed mode that's less of the "battle" you might expect from the title – and more of a friendly exchange of solos, recorded in the open and laidback style of Verve at the time. A striking little record – and the kind that both players could only have made with the new freedoms in jazz recording of the 70s! Although Peterson and Gillespie had played together before on earlier Verve albums, the setting was never like this – because the album's only a duet between trumpet and piano, with no other instrumentation at all – yet the sound is amazing swinging! Peterson works almost as a one man rhythm section here – bouncing the tunes with plenty of hard inflections on his left hand – and setting up a swing that Dizzy blows over with warmly muted tones. There's a quality here that's personal – but not in that "oh look at us, we're such big stars" sort of way – and titles include "Mozambique", "Caravan", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Blues For Bird", and "Con Alma" – always a treat to hear in a setting like this! One of the greatest jam session albums on Verve! In fact, it's probably the soulful rhythm section that makes the whole thing so darn good – as they really chop up some nice rhythms on cuts like "Wheatleigh Hall", "Haute Mon", and the album's classic version of "Con Alma", plus an alternate take of "Con Alma" and the previously unreleased "Anythin'". Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of great albums from singer Dana Gillespie – and a huge amount of bonus material too, including some rare promo and demo tracks that have never been available to the public! The set kicks off with the Weren't Born A Man album – a real turning point in the career of Dana Gillespie – a singer who started out as a British folkie in the 60s, but who really transformed through a host of different modes as the 70s moved in – including a key role in the long-running Catch My Soul stage show, and an intimate friendship with David Bowie! Gillespie's not exactly like Bowie, but on the record she does find a very special, intimate space of her own – helped partly by the production and arrangements of Mick Ronson, who also works with some of the Spiders Of Mars in the backing – and also in part by Bowie, who lets Dana sing his great tune "Andy Warhol" here in a version that's maybe even better than his own! Yet Gillespie is definitely at the helm throughout – a superb songwriter, and a great singer too – intimate one minute, bold the next, and quite far from her roots in folk. Titles include "Andy Warhol", "Weren't Born A Man", "Mother Don't Be Frightened", "All Gone", "Eternal Showman", "Dizzy Heights", and "Stardom Road (parts 1 & 2)". Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle is the second album that Dana Gillespie recorded for the Mainman productions label – and one that really has her stepping out and finding a voice that's all her own! Dana's a bit hard to peg stylistically – somewhat rock, but with occasional gentleness that's borrowed from her folk roots – often given a slight glam twist in the production, but not really a glam singer at all – in part because she's often got some deeper currents in her lyrics! Gillespie's got this strength in the lead that should have made her a much bigger star – an ability to step sideways to different modes from track to track, yet make you feel like the whole thing is very much part of her own master plan. Titles include "Get My Rocks Off", "Really Love The Man", "Hold Me Gently", "Pack Your Bags", "Getting Through To Me", and "Wanderlust". 2CD set features a huge amount of interesting material – including 5 tracks from Dana's 1971 promo record that she shared with David Bowie, 5 more demos from October of 1974, after her second album – but never issued – the original demo for "Andy Warhol", an outtake of "Man Size Job", different Mick Ronson arrangements for "Lavender Hill" and "Never Knew", and the Libido single tracks "Hold On To Your Fire" and "Weren't Born A Man". Kenny BarronWhat If? ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... $13.99
Although Kenny Barron's always a heck of a great musician on his own or in a piano trio, we're especially partial to his work in groups with horn players – and this album is a great example of that preference! Kenny first came to fame working with Dizzy Gillespie in the 60s, and since that point, he's always had a tremendous ear for the right tones and shadings from horns needed to augment his own soulful vision on the keys – a way of setting up the other players in the group to build on the well-crafted Barron lines, and take them even further into the stratosphere. This set follows that format, and draws great energy from Wallace Roney on trumpet and John Stubblefield on tenor – both at their younger best, and working alongside Kenny's piano with Cecil McBee on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. The lineup sparkles most on the 4 longer Barron numbers on the album – "Phantoms", "What If", "Voyage", and "Lullabye" – all of which take us back to the brilliance of Kenny's best Muse albums of the 70s. Other tracks feature smaller, more piano-centrist groupings – on tracks that include "Dexterity", "Close To You Alone", and "Trinkle Trinkle". CD

Dusko Goykovich has played in many styles and many ways, but hasn't ever done a date with full strings before – a long-overdue placement for his wonderful tone on trumpet – shimmering out front of a larger ensemble, in the manner of classic "with strings" dates by Dizzy Gillespie or Art Farmer! Altoist Peter King arranged the album – and titles are all originals by Dusko, some of which you might know from earlier records – reworked here beautifully for the new setting. King also solos on a handful of tracks too – a rich voice that provides a nice balance with Dusko's trumpet. Strings are never overdone, and the album's always got a nice swing from a core rhythm trio that features Renato Chicco on piano. Titles include "Good Old Days", "Handful O Soul", "Danca Comigo", "St Germain Des Pres", "Adriatica", "In My Dreams", and "I Miss You So". CD

Charlie ParkerBird In LA (4LP box set) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Verve, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy 4LP ... $79.99
Charlie Parker blew into the world of jazz from Kansas City, and rose to fame in New York – but right from the start, he also left an impact on the scene in Los Angeles – where he recorded his famous Dial Records material, and also worked in some Jam Session recordings too! But the cuts here aren't those at all – and instead represent some recently-unearthed LA recordings by Bird that appear here for the first time ever – the kind of fantastic live material and private recordings that often seem to have Charlie Parker reaching heights he didn't always hit in the studio – perhaps because of the inspiring scenes in which the work was recorded! The package begins with some live material recorded with Dizzy Gillespie at Billy Berg's Supper Club in 1945 – then includes some NBC material from the same time, an unusual Finale Club date from 1946 with Miles Davis on trumpet and Joe Albany on piano, and a 1948 JATP set recorded with a quartet at the Shrine. There's also the full recordings of a legendary house party in 1952, at Zorthian's Ranch, one track of which features Chet Baker – and an unknown location recording from 1952, and one more AFRS session from 1946. The material is a wonderful illumination of the way that Parker could blow into a scene and really set it on fire – and the well-done package features detailed notes that further illuminate the whole thing! Boyd RaeburnBoyd Meets Stravinsky ... CD
Savoy, Early 50s. Used ... $4.99
You may not know the name of Boyd Raeburn – but you'll certainly recognize the great players on this album, a hip set that includes Dizzy Gillespie, Hal McKusick, Lucky Thompson, Serge Chaloff, and Oscar Pettiford. Raeburn was a modernist swinger – in a mode that was a bit like some of the work that McKusick was laying down during the mid 50s, but with traces of the postwar work of Stan Kenton, and maybe a hint of the straight side of Raymond Scott. The tracks on this set are some of the finest sides he ever cut – and they sparkle with imagination and modernist zeal, yet never fail to swing hard and tight. Titles include "March Of The Boyds", "Boyd's Nest", "Boyd Meets Stravinsky", "Dalvatore Sally", and "Interlude (Night In Tunisia)". CD
(Out of print.)
