Charlie Christian/Dizzy GillespieAfter Hours ... CD
Esoteric/OJC, Early 40s. Used ... $1.99 5.99
The roots of bebop! During the early 40s, sets held in Harlem nightclubs, especially the famous Minton's, were seminal to the development of bebop – and you'll hear exactly what we mean on this long overdue CD reissue. The set features material recorded by Jerry Newman at Minton's and Monroe's up in Harlem – sessions that include players like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Christian, Thelonious Monk, Hot Lips Page, Kenny Clarke, and Don Byas. The players run through a batch of material that might be called small-combo swing – but the style of the solos shows a lot of bebop, as well as a strong penchant for new ideas. Titles include "Lips Flips", "Swing to Bop", "Guy's Got To Go", "Kerouac", and "Stardust". CD
(2000 OJC pressing. Please note the tray card is missing one spine, has some clear tape, and a bit of wear inside.)

Dizzy GillespieAfro (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve, 1954. Used ... $6.99
One of Dizzy Gillespie's finest Afro-Cuban moments! The material on this album has been issued under a few different titles over the years, but this is the early Afro package – the one that features a beautiful David Stone Martin cover, and a title that really gets at the Latin influences in the material. The centerpiece of the record is a side-long workout on the "Manteca" theme, played by Diz and a group that includes Lucky Thompson, Wade Legge, Charlie Persip, and Jose Mangual – all grooving hard in a sound that virtually defines the term of cubop! The other tracks on the album are great too – versions of "Caravan", "Con Alma", and "Night In Tunisia" – all done in a Latin jazz mode, with some nice flute solos by Gilberto Valdes. And if that's not enough, the reissue features a tiny 5" record sleeve cover – just like the original! CD

Dizzy GillespieAlgo Bueno – The Complete Bluebird/Musicraft Recordings & The Pleyel Concert ... CD
Definitive/Disconforme (Spain), Mid/Late 40s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
During his early days on record, Dizzy Gillespie made some of his best recordings for some of the smaller labels in the business – labels that have never been the subject of proper reissue series. This is certainly the case with Diz's Bluebird and Musicraft sessions – both of which catch him at a prime early moment in the history of bop, developing his unique trumpet style, and fusing it with touches of Latin rhythms, vocalese, and a good dose of humor. This excellent 45 track 2CD set finally brings this great material to light in a decent form – and it also pairs it with Diz's legendary Pleyel Concert, offered up here with good remastering. Titles include "Cubana Bop", "Cubana Be", "Dizzier & Dizzier", "In The Land Of Oo-Bla-Dee", "Ool-Ya-Koo", "Afro Cuban Suite", "Algo Bueno", "Guarachi Guaro", "Minor Walk", and "Ray's Idea". Loads more, too! CD

Verve, 1961. Used Gatefold ... $6.99 8.99
While actually not as electrifying as some of Dizzy's other albums from the time, this one's still pretty darn great, and features his great group with Leo Wright on alto and Lalo Schfrin on piano. The band grooves with a subtly Latinish vibe, and the tracks are nice and long long long. Titles include "Kush", one of Dizzy's best Latin numbers, plus "The Mooch" and "Night In Tunisia". The CD also includes an interview with Dizzy by Charles Schwartz. CD

Dizzy GillespieCool World/Dizzy Goes Hollywood ... CD
Verve, 1963/1964. Used ... $4.99 6.99
Nice one! Dizzy did the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World – a beautiful black and white film shot mostly on location in the Harlem of the early 60s. Mal Wladron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. The recording was made by his great group that included Kenny Barron and James Moody, and the titles include "The Pusher", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", and "Enter Priest". The CD also features the groovier Dizzy Goes Hollywood, which features the same group doing jazz readings of 60's soundtrack themes like "Carioca", "Never On Sunday", "More", and "Walk On The Wild Side". The whole thing's got 22 tracks in all, and is a very cool slice of Dizzy's career that you'll be hard pressed to find on vinyl! CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & The Double Six Of Paris ... LP
Philips, 1963. Near Mint- ... $8.99
A rare 60s meeting of groovy talents from both sides of the Atlantic – and a record that matches the trumpet of Dizzy Gillespie with the hiply swinging vocals of The Double Six Of Paris! The group were a wonderfully groovy precursor to the Swingle Singers – and sung in a scatting approach to jazz vocals that was very much in the tradition of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but also drew inspiration from the earlier work of Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, and others. Their sound is great – much more 60s groovy than some other vocal groups – and pairing them with Dizzy gives this record an added punch that some of their other sessions are missing! Backing is small combo throughout – with either Bud Powell or Kenny Barron on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and James Moody on tenor – and with the presence of Diz, most of the material here is of bop orientation – taken at a fast and lively clip! Lalo Schifrin arranged the whole session too – and titles include "One Bass Hit", "Blue N Boogie", "Emanon", "Groovin High", "Ow", "The Champ", "Tin Tin Deo", "Hot House", and "Con Alma". Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie At Newport ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good- ... $11.99
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! The ensemble here is plenty hip – with a young Lee Morgan joining Dizzy on trumpet, and a host of other great players who include Melba Liston and Al Grey on trombones, Benny Golson and Billy Mitchell on saxes, and rhythm from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Although big, the band often had the sharper groove of a small combo – and even when hitting some older moments from Gillespie's earlier years, they still kept a modern edge in their approach – thanks to arrangements by AK Salim, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy himself. Titles include "School Days", "I Remember Clifford", "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Verve stereophonic pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear and aging, split seams, stapled corners, and a bit of clear tape with a sticker underneath.)

Savoy, Late 40s. Very Good ... $14.99 19.99
Classic Savoy bop work from Diz – featuring some sides cut with the orchestra of Johnny Richards, plus some cut with the "Bepop (sic) Boys", a group that includes Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Dave Burns, and John Brown. The Richards sides are great – a bit more swinging than the ones he and Diz cut on Verve, but no less well-conceived. Titles include "Interlude In C", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "The Things I Love", "Moody Speaks", "For Hecklers Only", and "Boppin The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie's Big 4 (OJC) ... LP
Pablo/OJC, 1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Dizzy's Big 4 here are a quartet of players that includes Ray Brown on bass, Joe Pass on guitar, and Mickey Roker on drums – all of whom work with Dizzy in a lightly skipping groove that's a nice contrast to some of his other 70s work! The style certainly has some of the spacious qualities that Dizzy was bringing to his records of the 70s – that post-bop "little says more than a lot" style that we really love – but the overall mode is somewhat gentler too, and with just a guitar to emphasize some of the rhythms of the tune, there's some airiness to the numbers that's really compelling. Dizzy's trumpet is often muted, and titles include "Birk's Works", "Frelimo", "Hurry Home", "Russian Lullaby", and "September Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy GillespieDizzy In Greece ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good ... $14.99 24.99
Dizzy's in Greece, looking very cool in a fez on the cover – and really wailing hard with a larger group that includes Billy Mitchell, Charlie Persip, Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, and Phil Woods! The mode here is still quite boppish, despite the larger size of the ensemble – but Dizzy also manages to bring in some of those wonderfully rich colors that were coming into his later work – a tonal depth that's completely amazing, and which pushed Gillespie way past his simple roots of the 40s, into a space that made him one of the most expressive jazz leaders of the 50s. The horn charts alone are totally great – and Dizzy's got a wonderful talent for letting the key soloists step out with a really strong voice in the set – and although short, the tunes have an incredible reach overall. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Yesterdays", "Groovin' High", "Hey Pete", "Arnnie's Dance", and "Groovin' for Nat". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips/Verve, 1962. Used ... $9.99
It may have been recorded on the French Riviera – but the session's actually a killer batch of Latiny tinged tracks from Dizzy & Co – with with great arrangements by Lalo Schifrin! There's a wonderful 10 minute version of "Chega De Saudade", done as "No More Blues" to start it out, and it's got a great loping Latin vibe, in the manner of Dizzy's best sides from the 60s. Lalo's on piano, and the great Leo Wright is on flute and alto, with Tzigane Elek Bacsik on guitar, Chris White on bass, Ruby Collins on drums and Pepitoo Riestria on percussion. Other nice ones include "Long Long Summer", "Desafinado", and "Pau De Arara". A great album, and one not to pass up! CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy! Love Songs ... LP
Up Front, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Dizzy and strings – a surprisingly great combination! Although it was Charlie Parker who first made famous the modernist "jazz with strings" approach, Dizzy does wonderfully here in the format – working in similar fashion with edgey backing from the "Operatic String Orchestra" in sessions recorded in Paris in the early 50s! The material was originally only issued as a number of separate 78rpm singles, but is brought together here with full notes and a few bonus tracks – making for a wonderful album that documents this really under-represented part of Dizzy's career. The solos are warm, but edgey – blown over the top of backings that shimmer with rich colors, but have a slightly modern bent. Titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Jalousie", "Sweet & Lovely", and "The Man I Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Dizzy GillespieGillespiana/Carnegie Hall Concert ... CD
Verve, Early 60s. Used ... $3.99 5.99
A great burner from Diz – and one that features a large group, long tracks, and some stellar early work from Lalo Schifrin! Schifrin was in Diz's group at the time, playing piano and contributing fantastic Latin-tinged arrangements that gave the band a whole new life. Other players on this session include Candido, Leo Wright, Julius Watkins, and Willie Rodriguez – and the tracks include "Africana", "Blues", and "Panamerica". An incredible live set from Dizzy Gillespie – one that has him working in stunning big band mode, but with all the depth and agility of a small combo! The set features variations on a number of classic Gillespie themes – including "Kush", "Manteca", "Ool Ya Koo", and "Tunisian Fantasy (Night In Tunisia)" – recast with that ever-growing Latin influence that Dizzy was picking up in the 60s, supported strongly by the presence of a young Lalo Schifrin, who plays piano on the set. Horn players include Dizzy, Clark Terry, and Nick Travis on trumpets; Gunter Schuller and Jim Buffington on French Horns; Leo Wright on sax and flute; and Don Butterfield on tuba – supported by rhythm from Schifrin on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Charles Lumpkin on drums. Tunes are awash in soulful solos and deeply colored hues – and titles include "Manteca", "This Is The Way", "Kush", "Ool Ya Koo", and "Tunisian Fantasy". CD

One of the strongest sides to feature Diz's mid 50s format – a larger group than usual, an octet, with a more tightly arranged style that showed that he continued to develop as an artist long after the days of his early bop sides. The album's also noteworthy for demonstrating Dizzy's great talent for picking strong young talent – as the group features the writing and playing of Gigi Gryce and Benny Golson, plus work by Ray Bryant, Henry Coker, Tommy Bryant, and Charlie Persip. Tracks are short, but backed with that edgey energy that Gryce and Golson brought to their best work – and titles include "Blues After Dark", "Night At Tony's", "Smoke Signals", and "Shabozz". Dizzy GillespieHave Trumpet Will Excite ... CD
Verve, 1959. Used ... $6.99
Diz breaks past his bop playing, takes a bit of a turn towards swing-based material, and also hits this nice rolling groove that gives a bit of a peek at the way he'd sound in the 60's, when he had Lalo Schifrin on piano, and more of a Latin sound. He's backed here by Junior Mance on piano, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums. Given the soul jazz leanings of the group, the set's a lot hipper than you'd expect from Verve at the time, and is certainly worthy of the use of the word "excite" in the title. The tracks are all standards, but the group grooves openly, and makes a heck of a lot out of the material. Titles include "My Man", "St. Louis Blues", and "Woody'n You". CD also features 4 unissued bonus tracks – alternate takes of tunes on the LP! CD

A weird batch of groovy tracks from Diz – more of a pop soul jazz instrumental set than a straight jazz one, recorded in 1969 with arrangements by Jimmy Mundy, who conducts a group with Paul Griffin, Billy Butler, and Jerome Richardson. As usual, Dizzy rises to any occasion – and brings out some great work for the album, grooving in a number of different modes as the moods of the tracks change with the backing colors of the band. Titles include a medley of "Aquarius" and "Let The Sun Shine In", plus "Exotica", "Besame Mucho", "Magic Tree", "This Girl's In Love With You", and "Galveston". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieNew Wave ... LP
Philips, 1962. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly in the 60s. Rhythms are percolated by the piano of Schifrin, guitar of Bola Sete, bass of Chris White, and some well-chosen added percussion work – and the overall groove is one of the best American takes on the bossa jazz sound of the time, delivered with wonderful horn work from Dizzy on trumpet, Leo Wright on flute and alto, and Charlie Ventura on tenor! Even familiar tunes are transformed by the sound – and titles include "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town", "Careless Love", "Taboo", "One Note Samba", "Pergunte Ao Joao", and "Chega de Saudade". Really fantastic work from Dizzy Gillespie – proof that of all the original boppers, he was maybe the one who really continued to experiment over the years – as he comes across here with a great blend of electric funk and jazz! The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The instrumentation also features great use of Latin percussion too, and the album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga", "Timet", and "Diddy Wa Diddy". CD

Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them – a bit like his Soul Salvation record, and but slightly more open overall – with a groovy vibe throughout! The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. CD

If you like Dizzy Gillespie as much as us, you'll know that he kept on getting better and better as the years went on – continuing to evolve as a musician, into territory that's always very different than what he was giving the world a few years before! That's definitely the case here, on two live performances done for Dutch Radio in the late 70s – both of which feature a guitar as the key partner – with Rodney Jones on the first half, Ed Cherry on the second, and bass from Benjamin Brown and drums from the great Mickey Roker. Tracks are long, and open up in this really wonderful way – and the group is joined by percussionist Sheyvonne Wright on the second half, who also sings a bit too. There's a quality here that's much more in the best 70s work on the Muse label than you might expect – and titles include "Barcelona", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Toccata", "The Truth", "Night In Tunisia", "Manha De Carnaval", and Round Midnight". The best tracks are long groovers that really show the group stretching out – especially on the album's 16 minute reading of Dizzy's classic "Kush", the title track "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", and a great version of "Mas Que Nada"! Both sides feature nicely grooving material – with tracks that are a bit shorter than the usual Verve "celebrity meets celebrity" set, but which are no less well-played! Dizzy is always fantastic in this sort of loosely-crafted setting – and Getz's playing here is nicely relaxed, with more open-ended blowing than you might hear in some of his own sets as a leader. The pair play with backing by the Oscar Peterson trio on the first set which includes "Siboney", "Impromptu", "Girl Of My Dreams", and "It Don't Mean A Thing", while the second set finds them stretching out nicely on "Be Bop", "We", "Dark Eyes" and "Lover Come Back" along side Sonny Stitt, John Lewis, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Stan Levey. In fact, it's probably the soulful rhythm section that makes the whole thing so darn good – as they really chop up some nice rhythms on cuts like "Wheatleigh Hall", "Haute Mon", and the album's classic version of "Con Alma". Way more than the simple Charlie Parker tribute promised in the title! For starters, the set's got two of the best cuts by Gillespie's mid 60s group with James Moody – "Um-Hmmm" and "Groovin High" – both of which have Moody playing in an incredibly unbridled tone that's just great! Next up are Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge fronting a hip group with Billy Taylor on a long version of "Now's The Time". Taylor also makes an appearance on Dave Lambert's scatted vocal version of "Donna Lee", as well as on a large group medley of the tunes "Bird Watcher" and "Disorder At The Border". Finishing off the set is an amazing Lee Konitz solo version of "Blues For Bird", his own composition, played as a spare solo tune on alto! LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1980. Near Mint- ... $24.99
The trio of trumpeters meets the Oscar Peterson 4 – in a session of long tracks that have a liveish feel in the best Dizzy Gillespie mode! Most of the work here is in classic hardbop blowing style – with the trumpeters stating the head, then breaking out into well-voiced solos that outdo each other with inspiration – but there's also a bit of the lighter, airier quality that showed up on Dizzy's records of the generation too. The horns are mixed a bit too – so that some trumpets are muted, some are open, and Terry plays a bit of flugelhorn – and Peterson's quartet features Joe Pass on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Daahoud", "Chicken Wings", "Just Friends", and "The Champ". LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Parker & Dizzy GillespieBird & Diz/Jazz At Massey Hall/Diz N Bird In Concert ... CD
Not Now (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 3 CDs ... $6.99
3 albums on 3 CDs. First is Bird & Diz – a classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Titles include "Relaxin With Lee", "Leap Frog", "Oscar For Treadwell", and "Mohawk". Next is Jazz At Massey Hall – a legendary concert recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players: Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums. The quintet runs down "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", "Hot House" and "A Night In Tunisia". Also included is Diz 'N' Bird In Concert – not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Titles include "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac" and "Tin Tin Deo". CD

Pablo, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dizzy's trumpet is often muted, and titles include "Birk's Works", "Tenga", "Hurry Home", "Russian Lullaby", and "September Song". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieBirk's Works – Verve Big Band Sessions ... CD
Verve, 1956/1957. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from Dizzy – showing that he was a genius in any form of jazz! In the mid 50s, Diz had one of the hippest big bands going – filled with great young players that included Lee Morgan, Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Benny Golson, Billy Mitchell, and Walter Davis Jr. The work he crafted here was partly an extension of his earlier bop sides, but also a demonstration of his desire to express himself in more expansive forms – kind of a hint of the direction he'd take in the 60s, with his work in Latin, soundtrack, and funk styles. The set combines tracks from 3 different Verve albums – and it also packages the material with a number of previously unissued tracks, and some great liner notes that do a wonderful job of summing up the spirit of the work. Arrangements are by AK Salim, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron, and Dizzy himself – and tracks include "Jordu", "Tin Tin Deo", "Groovin For Nat", "Dizzy's Business", "Jessica's Day", "Doodlin", "Yo No Quiero Bailar", "Birk's Works", "Tangorine", "Umbrella Man", and "Mayflower Rock". 42 tracks in all! One of the greatest trumpeters on the European scene of the past few decades – heard here in a completely sublime setting! Dusko Goykovich has played in many styles and many ways, but hasn't ever done a date with full strings before – a long-overdue placement for his wonderful tone on trumpet – shimmering out front of a larger ensemble, in the manner of classic "with strings" dates by Dizzy Gillespie or Art Farmer! Altoist Peter King arranged the album – and titles are all originals by Dusko, some of which you might know from earlier records – reworked here beautifully for the new setting. King also solos on a handful of tracks too – a rich voice that provides a nice balance with Dusko's trumpet. Strings are never overdone, and the album's always got a nice swing from a core rhythm trio that features Renato Chicco on piano. Bud PowellBirdland 1953 (3CD set) ... CD
ESP, 1953. Used 3 CDs ... $14.99
A comprehensive set of live recordings by Bud Powell – recorded in that magical year of 1953, on location at the Birdland nightclub! This set's the biggest and best we've ever seen of these performances – and not only includes a wealth of trio tracks, but also some cuts with Charlie Parker on alto or Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet. Bud's piano alone is worth the price of admission, though – and these radio broadcasts capture him at the height of his bop powers – working with shifting lineups that include either Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, Franklin Skeetes, or George Duvivier on bass – and either Art Taylor, Roy Haynes, or Sonny Payne on drums. Candido joins in on the Charlie Parker cuts, giving things a bit of a cubop swing – and the set features 49 tracks in all on 3CDs! CD

Mongo SantamariaMontreux Heat ... CD
Pablo, 1980. Used ... $6.99
Late Mongo – but great Mongo! The CD features work recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 – a wonderful jazz-based performance that was never issued at the time! Tracks are long and very open – stretching out with a soulful majesty that goes beyond even Mongo's excellent jazz sides for the Vaya label at the end of the 70s. Milton Hamilton plays some great electric piano on the tracks – and the tunes also have some excellent work on soprano sax, tenor, and flute by Doug Harris, a player we know little about, but who we really love on this set! Dizzy Gillespie and Toots Thielemans join in on one track, but the core group is the real power of the the album – grooving hard in a mix of jazz, Latin, and a slight bit of funk – served up on long tracks that include "Para Ti", "Come Candela", "Sofrito", "Pajaro Cantor", "Havana", and "Amanecer". Lalo SchifrinIns & Outs – Lalo Live At The Blue Note ... CD
Aleph, 1982/2002. Used ... $6.99 9.99
The first two tracks are from a live date recorded at the Blue Note in 2002. Ins & Outs is a great return to form for Lalo Schifrin – and a straight album of jazz tunes, recorded after years of late 70s disco work! The album almost returns Schifrin to his 60s years with Dizzy Gillespie (except for the fact that there's no trumpet on the set) – and the tunes have a great mix of jazz, Latin, and soundtrack influences – of the sort that first got Lalo noticed back in the early days! Lalo's playing acoustic piano throughout – and pretty nicely, too we might add – and titles include "Chano", "Ritual","Ins & Outs", "Con Alma", "Manteca", "Paraphrase", "The Fox", and "Love Poem For Donna". Cal TjaderSoul Sauce ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $19.99
Arguably THE classic Cal Tjader album of the 60s – a landmark album that crossed over equally into Latin, jazz, and mainstream audiences – and a stone cooker that's filled with smoking little grooves! The set's probably best known for its title track "Soul Sauce" – one of the biggest jazz hits of the 60s, and a catchy groover that was built around a riff from Dizzy Gillespie, but which also featured a groovier 60s sound, thanks to Cal's use of vibes. The whole album follows in similar format – and features great work by a core combo that includes Armando Pereza on congas, Lonnie Hewitt on piano, and Johnny Rae on drums. Titles include "Soul Sauce" – also known as "Guacha Guaro" – plus the tracks "Joao", "Leyete", "Maramoor", and a killer reading of "Afro Blue" that features guest appearances by Donald Byrd, Jimmy Heath, and Kenny Burrell. Plus, the CD reissue also includes 3 excellent bonus cuts: "Monkey Beams", "Ming", and the groovy "Mamblues". CD

T Bone WalkerVery Rare ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 12.99
Very rare, indeed – a late set from the legendary T Bone Walker, and one that brings in some great currents of soul, jazz, and funk that really help push his music forward! The album's maybe a bit like some of the funkier albums on Chess/Cadet at the same time – in that an older talent is able to really step forth with a fantastic new vibe for the 70s – as Walker works here under the direction of producers Lieber and Stoller – alongside an all-star lineup that features trumpet from Dizzy Gillespie, tenor from David Newman and Zoot Simms, flute from Herbie Mann, and even some backing vocals from The Sweet Inspirations! The lineup shifts from track to track, but the great James Booker is on most tracks, playing piano and Fender Rhodes – and almost adding as much to the record as Walker. Also, funky genius David Matthews handled all the arrangements, with that ear for soul that he first forged with James Brown – really bringing a lot to cuts that include "Striking On You, Baby", "The Last Clean Shirt", "The Come Back", "Hard Times", "Three Corn Patches", "I'm Still In Love With You", "If You Don't Come Back", "Well I Done Got Over It", and "Person To Person". Perception/Octave (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99
Back in the early 70s, the Perception label was one of the hippest new record companies to come up on the scene – a very cool, very forward-thinking company that did a great job of blending together jazz, funk, and soul – sometimes with older artists looking to find a new way forward, sometimes with younger acts that were given a lot of freedom by the label! This set's a great overview of the Perception sound at its best – and the collection not only brings together some killer funky jazz and soul material, but also throws in a few surprises from the world of Brazilian music and soundtracks as well! Titles include "Jaded Jackie" and "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Boogie" by John Bartel, "One Life" by The Albert, "Heritage Hum" by James Moody, "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" by Astrud Gilberto, "N'Bani" and "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Saudia" by Larry Young, "Baby I Love You" by Benny Johnson, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Kiba" and "Dance Girl" by Fatback, "Soulful Brother On The Run" by Johnny Pate, and "Take My Love Don't Set Me Free" by The Eight Minutes. Although not as classic as his "classic" recordings, these two albums recorded for Perception in the early 70s prove that Johnny was capable of stretching his bag, and not just a play-it-safe interpreter of syrupy ballads. Like a lot of the jazz recordings on Perception at the time (by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Shirley Horn), this set's got an edge you wouldn't expect – with some very hip arrangements overall that really sound great – performed on the first album by a quartet that includes George Coleman on tenor and Herman Foster on piano, and on the second album by a group with Ken Ascher on keyboards and Jimmy Heath on tenor and flute. The set features interpretations of material that range from brilliant, to daring but off-track – and titles include "Sunday Sun", "Feelin' Groovy", "I've Got To Be Me", "Didn't We", "Summer Wind", and "Betcha By Golly Wow". Motema, 2015. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant meeting of modes from the mighty Arturo O'Farrill – a set that combines a rich tapestry of Cuban styles with American jazz elements from the cubop years and beyond – all into a spacious double-length set of performances that brings together musicians from around the globe, all recording in Havana under Arturo's direction! The tracks are often ambitious, but never overly-complicated – and instead almost take us back to the clarity of vision that we first loved in the older Afro-Cuban experiments of Machito with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie – and the ability of those records to throw out many ideas at once, yet keep things very fluid and forward-moving at all times. Most tunes were written especially for the project – and titles include "Vaca Frita", "Second Line Soca", "El Bombon", "Just One Moment", "The Triumphant Journey", "Afro Latin Jazz Suite", "Guajira Simple", "Alabanza", "Blues Guaguanco", and "There's A Statue Of Jose Marti In Central Park". An incredible album – and a real surprise in the catalog of Harold Vick, one of those players who just gets hipper the more you listen to him! Harold's working here with a really great group that includes Bobby Hutcherson, Blue Mitchell, Montego Joe, Walter Booker, and Mickey Roker – all of whom perform the extended "Carribean Suite", a long Latin-tinged piece written by Kenny Graham – the famous 50s British leader who's work with Afro-Cuban jazz was as important to the London scene as the work of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo was to that of New York! The album's filled with fire and some very unusual twists – and titles include "Letitia", "Dance Of The Zombies", "Haitian Ritual", "Beguine", "Mango Walk", "Bongo Chant", and "Wha Hupp'n". Quite possibly the greatest record ever by Mike Longo – a wicked batch of electric funky piano tunes, recorded with a sublime 70s feel! The set's got a really stripped down group – with Ron Carter on bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Patato Valdez on percussion – all grooving behind Longo's work on electric and acoustic piano, creating some magical rhythms that snap a groove out of just about every single tune! The whole set's great – not just a "one number" funky jazz set – and titles include versions of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", Dizzy Gillespie's "Ole' For the Gypsies", Les McCann's "Samia", and Longo's own "Southern Soul" and "Funkia". ✨✧ Sarah VaughanEmbraceable You ... CD
Groove Merchant/LRC, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great 70s live work from Sarah Vaughan – material that easily stands alongside her best for the Pablo label at the same time, but which is far more obscure overall! The notes on the CD aren't much – and obviously help enforce the obscurity of the sessions – but we can say that all the performances are from live dates, and backing appears to be from a trio led by Bob James on acoustic piano on some tracks – and by a larger group with Hank Mobley and Dizzy Gillespie on a few more. Sarah's vocals are simple and straightforward, but have a confidence and poise that's totally great – qualities that have always almost made her a better singer live than in the studio. Titles include "Sassy's Blues", "Scat Blues", "Alfie", "Misty", "I Had A Ball", "The Theme", "Lover Man", "What Now My Love", and "Lover Come Back To Me". CD

Norgran, 1956. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
That's the Modern Jazz Sextet – not the Modern Jazz Quartet – although the group definitely borrows a bit of energy from the MJQ, and some personnel too! The group was only put together for this date – and combines the subtle touches of MJQ members John Lewis on piano and Percy Heath on bass, with some harder-edged, hardbop-driven sounds from Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Sonny Stitt on alto, Skeeter Best on guitar, and Charlie Persip on drums! The set's got an open, easygoing feel – that loose Verve studio mode of the time – which stems from their jam session modes, but is a bit tighter overall – in ways that really help the players find their energy together in the tunes. Titles include 2 standards, in the usual Verve style – "Mean To Me" and a ballad medley of "Old Folks", "What's New" and "How Deep Is The Ocean" – plus 3 originals – "Blues For Bird", "Tour De Force", and "Dizzy Meets Sonny".
