Isaiah Collier & The Chosen FewAlmighty ... CD
Division 81, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
An album that really lives up to its title – as the record sets out to prove to the world that Isaiah Collier is one of the most almighty talents on the saxophone in recent years! The album has a spiritual majesty that tops even the previous album with the Chosen Few group – as in addition to work from the quartet that includes Julian Davis Reid on piano, Jeremiah Hunt on bass, and Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums – the group adds in extra instrumentation, light strings, and added horns at times too – all of which push the music into territory that's right up there with Nimbus or Strata East back in the glory days! Collier is a true jazz visionary, and his message here is bold and brilliant – given some key support from older Chicago legends who include saxophonist Ari Brown on one track, and vocalist Dee Alexander on another – getting maybe one of her most beautiful showcases ever on record. Titles include "Love", "Compassion", "Duality Suite", "The Almighty", and "Perspective (Peace & Love)". CD

Isaiah Collier & The Chosen FewWorld Is On Fire ... CD
Division 81, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A strongly message-oriented set, as you might assume from the title – and definitely the strongest work to date from the great Isaiah Collier – one of the most righteous musicians we've had the pleasure of discovering in the past decade or so! There's a rich, vibrant feel to the whole album – and in addition to the Chosen Few group at the core, the record features contributions from additional musicians who really expand the sound – creating this ambitious quality to the album that's easily rivals the best on Strata East or Impulse from back in the day! Like some of Archie Shepp's most majestic records for the latter, Collier allows additional voices to come in from time to time – delivering a verbal message next to his powerful voice on tenor – with core work from Julian Davis Reid on piano, Jeremiah Hunt on bass, and Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums – and additional work from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Ed Wilkerson Jr on alto clarinet, Olula Negre on cello, Cassie Watson Francillon on harp, and both Kenthany Rodman and Mayshell Morris on flutes. The album's a masterpiece – and titles include "Amerikkka The Ugly", "Trials & Tribulations", "We Don't Even Know Where We're Heading", "The World Is On Fire", "Crash", "The Hate You Give Is The Love You Lose", and "The Time Is Now". CD

New OrderLowlife (2CD collector's edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Factory/Rhino, 1985. Used 2 CDs ... $39.99
New Order take a slightly sweeter turn for this mid 80s set – but still never lose the charm that won us from their first few records! There's a warmth here we might not have expected in the immediate post-Joy Division years – and a catchy tunefulness on some of the biggest crossover numbers on the set – yet, given the commercial dreck of the time, New Order are still way ahead of the pack – and from the perspective of these many years later, we're even more impressed at the way they manage to balance nascent pop sensibilities with some of the darker leanings of their roots. More than enough edgey guitar and moody basslines to please fans of the first two albums – on titles that include "Sunrise", "Elegia", "Love Vigilantes", "The Perfect Kiss", "Sub Culture", "Face Up", and "Sooner Than You Think". 2CD set features 8 more bonus cuts – including "Shellshock (substance edit)", "The Perfect Kiss", "Subculture (John Robie rmx)", "Salvation (theme)", "Dub Vulture", and "Shame Of The Nation". CD

✨✧ New OrderMovement (2CD collector's edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Factory/Rhino, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful early work from New Order – a stunning full-length set that brilliantly follows on the promise of their initial singles! Production is by Martin Hannett at the top of his game – almost even more sonically sensitive to New Order's work than that of Joy Division – especially given the additional electronics here. Tracks are all quite dark, but never too overdone – and although there's a hint of dancefloor energy, it's definitely second on the agenda in the music – since most tunes still have a moody post-punk feel. Titles include "Truth", "Senses", "The Him", "ICB", "Denial", "Doubts Even Here", and "Dreams Never End". 2CD set is filled with brilliant bonus tracks – 10 more numbers that include important early singles – with tracks that include "Hurt", "Mesh", "Ceremony", "Procession", "Cries & Whispers", "In A Lonely Place", "Everything's Gone Green", and both 12" and 7" mixes of "Temptation". CD

✨✧ Joy DivisionStill (2 x cassette box) ... Cassette
Factory/Polygram (Canada), Early 1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last full chapter in the legacy of Joy Division – an album that ws issued in the wake of the untimely early death of Ian Curtis – a special double-length set that brought together all the unreleased material at the time! The package features a number of tracks that the group were working on before Curtis died – material that still shows a much more Joy Division-centric aesthetic than the sound of New Order to come – and the package also features live material from 1980 – an interesting change from the studio sound of the group (even though the whole set was still produced by Martin Hannett!) Features the group's famous cover of "Sister Ray", plus "Glass", "The Only Mistake", "The Sound Of Music", "Exercise One", "Dead Souls", "Walked In Line", "Ceremony", "Shadowplay", "Transmission", "Decades", "Digital", and "New Dawn Fades". Cassette
(Mid 80s reissue in the oversized, textured purple box, with Polygram stickers, and a tiny drill hole on spine. Includes insert.)
