Art PepperDiscovery Sessions ... CD
Savoy, Early 50s. Used ... $7.99
Some of the best Art Pepper work you'll ever find! The CD is filled with tracks that were originally cut for Savoy Records during the time of Art's Surf Ride album for that label – some of which were included on the album, others of which are equally wonderful, but which were lost on the cutting room floor for years. Pepper's tone is fantastic – with more of an edge than usual, kind of a raspy soulful quality that you don't find in some of his other work, especially those slicker overrated sessions that most consider "classic". We love this material, and this CD is the first time the work's been adequately compiled on disc. There's a number of alternate takes, but don't worry, because they're worth hearing, and often have very different solos. Titles include "Brown Gold", "Surf Ride", "Chili Pepper", "Nutmeg", "Suzy The Poodle", "Thyme Time", "Straight Life", and "Art's Oregano". 22 cuts in all! CD

✨✧ Ananda ShankarMusical Discovery Of India/Sa Re Ga Machan ... CD
EMI/Cloud Forest (New Zealand), 1978/1981. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A double-length set of work from funky sitar player Ananda Shankar – and a collection that features 2 of his lesser-known albums from the 70s! Musical Discovery of India is a 70s musical tour of Shankar's homeland – performed with his sitar in the lead, and some very sweet soundtrack-style orchestrations in the back!! The style's a bit less funky than before, but still extremely evocative – as it blends Indian styles of instrumentation with more western approaches to soundtrack scoring and a bit of post-colonial travelogue! Titles include "Discovery Of India", "Akbar's Jewels", "Namaskar", "Kaziranga Beat", and "The Hill Train". Next up is Sa Re Ga Machan – a great bit of jungle exotica, composed as a full piece with an "atmosphere of twilight and the feeling of watching animals at a water hole" – but recorded with a sweeping soundtracky feel that makes it more like some lost 70s film gem in the best places! There's some nicely subdued funk in the mix – as Ananda's sitar grooves over guitars, keyboards, and compressed bass and drum parts, occasionally touched with modern exotica styles, as in the work of Mandingo. Titles include "Night In The Forest", "Jungle King", "Jungle Symphony", "Sa Ra Ga Machan", "Romantic Rhino", "Charging Tiger", and "Monkey's Tea Party". CD

Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare glimpse of the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane – recorded in Monk's home turf of The Five Spot by Coltrane's wife at the time! The recording was done on a portable tape recorder, but the overall quality is surprisingly strong – not in stereo, but with more than enough depth to capture the interplay between Monk and Coltrane in the more relaxed, open setting of the club. 3 of the tracks on the set are quite long – "Trinkle Trinkle", "In Walked Bud", and "I Mean You" – and they're complemented by 2 shorter tunes – "Epistrophy" and "Crepuscule With Nellie". Group features Roy Haynes on drums and Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass. CD

Discovery, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wickedly wonderful album by Antonio Carlos Jobim – recorded in LA in the mid 60s, and a perfect meeting of styles that makes for one of his most compelling albums of the 60s! Jobim sings and plays over pillowy-soft arrangements by Claus Ogerman – lightly dancing numbers that weave strings and woodwinds into a wave of sound that dips, turns, and sometimes hits a surprisingly nice groove. Dick Hyman plays a bit of organ on the set – which we always love – and Dom Um Romao's working in the group somewhere on drums. Lyrics are in English, sung in a warm and fragile style by Jobim – and the album's got a great organy version of "Surfboard", plus "Zingaro", "Bonita", "Off-Key", and "Photograph". CD

A great album from the late 70's, featuring the excellent jazz vocalist backed by a totally tight group led by Gildo Mahones. The sound is deep and loud, and there's some nice phat bass on here, particularly on the intro to "Baltimore Oriole", which has a nice break sound at the beginning. A great track, with a nice jazz dance feel to it! Other titles include "Little Boat (O Barquinho)", "Until It's Time For You To Go", "Perhaps", and "Greatest Love Of All". LP, Vinyl record album

Ben WebsterWarm Moods – Ben Webster With Strings ... CD
Discovery, 1960. Used ... $4.99
One of the all-time great ones by Ben Webster! The album was recorded near the end of Webster's all-too-short time on this planet – at a point when he had really perfected a sorrowful tone on tenor, and a strangely sinister approach to ballads – one that gave even familiar tunes an unusual edge. The great Johnny Richards handled backings for the set – in a mode that uses light strings in the background, and which lets the solos step right out front – in a style that rivals the great work of Ralph Burns for Verve's classic "with strings" albums. But the real strength here is Webster's tone, which is fantastic – as you'll hear on titles like "Stella By Starlight", "Nancy", "It's Easy To Remember", and "Accent On Youth". CD

✨✧ June ChristyInterlude (aka Gone For the Day) ... LP
Capitol/Discovery, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
June Christy really sends us – vocals that take us to a place that few other 50s singers could ever hope to reach! June's work here is a masterpiece of melancholic understatement – far less overblown than some of her pop contemporaries, but also filled with feeling in a way that's different from some of the other icy singers of the time. A big part of the album's strength lies with arranger Pete Rugolo – who gives June here some of the same dark corners and modern elements you'd find in her classic Something Cool album – which really hits the right sort of emotion for Christy. Titles include "When The Sun Comes Out", "It's So Peaceful In the Country", "When You Awake", "Lazy Mood", and "Interlude". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the nicest jazz combo takes on the music of soundtrack maestro Michel Legrand that we've ever heard – largely because Cooper & Co really open up the tunes, and make some inventive changes to their sound! The work's in a small group mode throughout – with Bob's tenor in 2 different groups – one with Michael Fahn on valve trombone, Ross Tompkins on piano, Charles Burghofer on bass, and John Guerin on drums; the other with Mike Wofford on piano, leading a trio. The style is laidback, but never lazy – a loving exploration of Legrand themes from soundtracks, both familiar and lesser-known. Titles include "The Summer Knows", "His Eyes Her Eyes", "Watch What Happens", "Siren Song", "To Love", "Her Hair", "Love Me Discover Me", and "Ina's Theme". CD

✨✧ Duke EllingtonAfro-Bossa ... CD
Reprise/Discovery, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A darkly beautiful album from Duke Ellington – one that really lives up to the promise of its title! The mode here is almost more "afro" than "bossa" – as Ellington's working in the fuller, richer styles used in some of his more exotic 60s suites – and less in the light and breezy mode than you'd expect from the bossa nova generation. But the approach is a great one – one that complicates the rhythms even further than some of Duke's other work from the time – and which shows that he was more than willing to move past the easy cliches that were part of the Ellington hit sound at the time, but which were so wonderfully cast off for newer modes as the 60s moved on. Titles include "Bonga", "Afro Bossa", "Tigress", "Absinthe", "Sempre Amore", "Eight Veil" and "Puple Gazelle". CD

Breezy vocals from Feather – a pair with a flair for groovin! Feather features the vocals of Weaver Copeland and Mahmu Pearl – and on this CD, which features tunes from their albums on Discovery in the 80s, they're backed by players that include Ray Pizzi, Eddie Harris, Victor Feldman, Joey Barron, and Bud Shank. Nice Fender Rhodes on a number of tracks – and a total of 15 tracks that include "Chen You Lips", "My Desiree", "Haunted Ballroom", "Mulege Day", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Nica's Dream", "Zanzibar", and "Gaviota". Very groovy work from keyboardist Clare Fischer – a musician we first fell in love with from Cal Tjader albums in the 60s, and continued to love for his MPS Records material in the 70s! Here, Clare's working with the 2+2 vocal ensemble – a gently swinging male/female harmony group that has a similar sound to the Singers Unlimited – warm harmonies that have a sunny, breezy finish alongside Clare's keyboards and the grooves. The production of the tracks is similar to the smooth MPS mode used by that group and Fischer – and there's also electric west coast Latin backing from a Latin jazz group that features Fischer on keyboards. ✨✧ Anthony OrtegaRain Dance ... LP
Discovery, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare 70s gem from modernist reed giant Anthony Ortega – very different than his other sessions as a leader, but with an equally compelling vibe! The style here has Ortega working with a bit of electricity – provided by vibes and guitar, in a way that creates some slightly funky undercurrents on a few tracks, and some soundtracky touches on others. Given that Ortega had played a lot in studio groups at the time, the setting's not that unusual – but what is striking is that Tony still blows with an angular, modern, and extremely striking quality – really hitting some great solos in the set, and showing that he's still one of the farthest-thinking players on the LA scene of the time. Vibes are by Mona Orbeck Ortega, guitar is by Joseph Coleman, and the record's got some nice drums by Ronald Ogden. Anthony plays bass clarinet, tenor, alto, and flute – and titles include "Down Here On The Ground", "Kathy Walk", "Hidin Out", "Rain Dance", and "Town Meetin". LP, Vinyl record album

AppaloosaAppaloosa ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1969. Used ... $11.99 16.99
A beautiful musical discovery that we'd somehow never managed to hear all these years – the debut of (and possibly only album by) Appaloosa, a group who mix together gentle folk and a bit of strings – in a mode that's strongly resonant with some of Tim Hardin or Tim Buckley's best work of the late 60s! As you can guess from the cover image, the group is pretty young – but they work with a timeless quality beyond their years, a mode that mixes guitar, violin, and cello together as the core instrumentation for the tunes – topped by wonderful vocals from singer Robin Batteau, who has one of those "shoulda been huge" voices that really grab you right away. Al Kooper produced and contributed some instrumentation – but in a really subtle way that respects the band's sound strongly – and titles include "Pascal's Paradox", "Now That I Want You", "Georgia Street", "Rosalie", "Rivers Run To The Sea", "Glossolalia", and "Feathers". A wonderful assortment of material Buckley cut in 1968 – originally intended as material for the album that would become Happy Sad, but largely left behind at the time – most of it released for the first time ever on this incredible set from Rhino Handmade! Many of the tracks have an intimate, stripped down sound that would be mere demos in the hands of lesser musical heroes – but Tim Buckley's voice is in top from and the accompaniment of guitarist Lee Underwood is impeccable – effective pushing Works In Progress into the realm of true discovery. The genius of Terry Callier – remixed! One of the greatest things to happen to Chicago soul legend Callier in recent years was his discovery by a host of cutting edge producers and DJs on the European scene – important talents who took his work to a whole new audience, by fusing Terry's original grooves with some more ambitious rhythmic progressions, keyboard lines, and other studio touches. And while you might fear that such knob-twiddling would muddy the waters and dampen Callier's spirit, such was not the case – as work in this vein only seemed to inspire Terry further, to stretch out his wings and reach new musical horizons. The tracks on this set offer a number of recent Callier recordings, remixed by the cream of the current UK and European scene – all as proof of how great this format is when applied to Callier's work. Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
Great work from Jimmy Cavallo – an early tenor star from the years when the saxophone was almost more important to the sound of rock music than the guitar! Jimmy draws plenty of inspiration from R&B on these tracks – and although he sings in the lead, he also takes a break for a nice tenor solo on just about all the cuts – often keeping the spirit strong with the addition of a second saxophonist in the group! Most of these tracks were cut within a few short years for Coral Records – home to some surprising rockers back in the day (including Johnny Burnette!) – and the set then moves on to a few later recordings from a time when Cavallo's star had fallen from the limelight. As with the other titles in this series, the focus is on upbeat rockers from the postwar years – but unlike the others, most of this work is pretty darn obscure – every bit the kind of musical discovery we love from Bear Family! Morning Trip (Netherlands), Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99
Very cool work from Belgian artist Jacques Charlier – music that almost brings a cold wave style into play with some more familiar French song styles – but with this dark edge that almost feels like work on Factory Records or Disques Du Crepuscule! A good deal of these tracks are unreleased, and fit nicely to the few that came out on albums in the mid 80s – almost all with a spare drum machine rhythm behind Charlier's effects-laden guitar and stark vocals – sometimes coming across like Vini Riley of Durutti Column in an angry mood on a bad day! We'd not heard any of this work when it was release, which makes the whole thing a great discovery, especially given the unreleased tracks – a set with titles that include "Vampirella", "Perki Show", "Check Up", "L'Amour Dans Les Chansons", "Sambas", "Passing Time", "Tout Va Bien", "Un Chat Dans Mon Lit", and "End Of WE". Cobra/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Singer Dee Daniels has some great backing here – the trio of pianist Monty Alexander, who really bring a strongly soulful swing to the set! Dee's one of those 80s vocalists who can draw on older jazz traditions and borrow some of the inflections from soul music of the 60s and 70s – then spin things out with a lean, mean quality that's a great change from some of the too-familiar torch and jazz standard styles on the scene! The approach is maybe in the territory of Ernestine Alexander during her great run of albums on Concord – and as with those, there was less mainstream play with the music of Daniels – which is what makes it such a great discovery. Monty's on piano with John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums – and titles include "He Loves Me", "This Must Be Love", "Dr Feelgood", "Come Try My Love", "Adonnadee", and "I Got This Bridge I Want You To Buy". Harold Danko may look a bit boring on the cover, but the album's full of stunning beauty throughout – an all-solo session that seems to show off Danko's rich command of the piano in a way that we've never heard before! The songs are all compositions by Harold, but they have an open, freewheeling sense of exploration that takes us back to Keith Jarrett improvisations of the 70s – even though Danko is a very different player than Jarrett overall, and the recording quality here has a heck of a lot more warmth than a session from ECM. The comparison is just one that we're using to convey the sense of discovery and spontaneous expression that comes from Danko's fingers on the keys – really magical music that has us listening to the pianist in a whole new way. Titles include "Nirigama", "No Escape", "Address Unknown", "Premonitions & Reflections", and "Mystic Dancers". CD

Asylum/Be With (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A seminal set from Ned Doheny – a lasting bit of California cool from the 70s, and a record that's every bit as refreshing as its image on the cover! The sound is tight, but never too slick – well-crafted songwriting with equally well-crafted production and studio execution – but somehow in a space that's far from the charts, too – which makes the whole thing a really great discovery in music! Ned Doheny's got a way of hitting an AOR vibe, but holding onto more personal elements too – and the vocals glide along with the music with the same charming vibe we'd find in a vintage Chris Rainbow record. Titles include "Get It Up For Love", "Each Time You Pray", "When Love Hangs In The Balance", "A Love Of Your Own", "On The Swingshift", "Sing To Me", and "If You Should Fall". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Moussa DoumbiaKeleya – Raw Malian Funk of the 1970s ... CD
Oriki (France), 1970s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Malian funk indeed – and just the sort of African sounds we really go crazy for! The grooves here are totally wonderful – a skittish brew of percussion, guitar, and keyboards – sometimes in straighter Afro Funk modes, sometimes with the other-worldly styles we might associate with Mulatu in the 70s! Vocals can be quite frenetic – often shouted by backup singers along with the lead – with a sense of urgency that only drives the grooves onward even farther. The tracks all definitely live up to the "funk" promise of the title – and have a really universal appeal to fans of all things funky – even if you don't know anything about the culture, the language, or the 70s origin of these sides. The album's a tremendous discovery in sound – fresher than Fela, and finally getting its due with a wider global audience. A heady second chapter of a legendary funk group that were only around for a few short years, but gave us some great music in the process – presented here with 16 unissued tracks from their years in Los Angeles, including work from members of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band too! With so much unreleased music, the set's like a fresh discovery of Dyke & The Blazers – adding new takes and versions to the material they recorded in LA before Dyke passed all too quickly – making for a long-overdue addition to their small body of recorded work. Titles unissued stereo mixes of "We Got More Soul (full length)", "Funky Walk (full length)", "The Wobble (full length)", "Let A Woman Be A Woman Let A Man Be A Man", "Funky Bull (full length)", "Booga Jivin", "Stuff (full length)", "Runaway People (full length)", and "Moon" – plus the never-issued "The Walk (part 1 east)", "Do It Together (orig mix)", "WUFO Radio Spot", "Day Is Comin (demo)", and "I'm So All Alone (alt)". Barclay (France), 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $39.99
Dario Agento hired aging prog rock star Keith Emerson for this 1980 horror soundtrack, and the overall approach used by Emerson is similar to some of his solo instrumental work from the late 70s – with lots of keyboard-heavy tracks (acoustic piano, organ, electric piano) that show off Emerson's virtuosity and classical training. The score has some elements that are similar to some of Argento's other soundtracks – like the contemporary work by Goblin – but it's also much more of an Emerson-driven album. The whole thing's remastered here and presented with a total of 15 tracks that include "Mark's Discovery", "Rose Gets It", "Elisa's Story", "Inferno", and "Taxi Ride". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic late 70s album from guitar genius John Fahey – his first after a number of years away from the recording studio – and a real back to basics effort overall! There's none of the "orchestra" trappings of other 70s records – nor some of Fahey's more longer-form ideas – and instead, the tracks focus mostly on his incredible sense of texture and timing on the acoustic guitar – heard to perfectly as he folds his own compositions together with songs by Bill Monroe, Bola Sete, Leo Kottke, and Doc Watson! The whole thing's wonderfully understated – even more so than you'd guess from the cover – and titles include "Silver Bell/Cheyenne", "Ann Arbor/Death By Reputation", "The Discovery Of Syliva Scott", "Guitar Lamnento", "Melody McBad", and "The Grand Finale". Habibi Funk (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Beautiful sounds from Roger Fahkr – a Lebanese singer/songwriter who recorded most of this music in the late 70s – but with a sound and style that's every bit as compelling as western talents from the earlier part of the decade! The tunes often begin with voice and acoustic guitar, but usually bring in a bit of keyboards or other elements to expand things slightly, but all while keeping the moody quality of Roger's English-language vocals intact – all with a quality that could easily have this work standing next to some of our favorite recordings by artists like Rodriguez, Terry Callier, or Alzo & Udine! There's an inexplicable quality to all of these cuts – a uniqueness that really lives up to our comparison with those other greats – and the whole pacakge is a huge discovery of an artist who might have been a huge global force, had he had the chance back in the 70s. Titles include "Sad Sad Songs", "My Baby She Is As Down As I Am", "Express Line", "Insomnia Blue", "Lady Rain", "Everybody Is Going Home", "Sitting In The Sun", "The Wizard", "Trip Thru Time", "Gone Away Again", and "Had To Come Back Wet". A stunning set of funky tracks from the Libyan scene – music that's not free in a "free jazz" sort of way, but which definitely shows a new sense of liberation in the way the group puts together their groove! The combo's headed by legendary arranger Najib Alhoush – and the style here is very much like American jazz funk from that 70s moment when things were tilting a bit more strongly towards the clubs – rhythms picked up, and often laced with lots of riffing guitar and wah wah work – but also touched with plenty of elements that mark the music as quite far from the American shores – not just in the lyrics, but also in the way that things are inflected with a special sort of cultural current. A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio that features fellow Chicagoan John Young on piano, plus Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all hanging back nicely to let Freeman dominate the set on tenor. The album's noteworthy for its inclusion of a few original tunes by Von – "White Sand", "Portrait Of John Young", "Doin It Right Now", "Brother George", and "Catnap" – all of which mark a nice contrast from some of the more traditional standards that show up on other Freeman albums of the 70s. The album's a famous live date recorded in the mid 50s – and a record that's as important to his catalog as the classic Misty! Despite the oft-heard power of the record, it's still a great one – worthy of discovery even if it wasn't a hit, and still great even if it was. ✨✧ Stan GetzGetz At The Gate – The Stan Getz Quartet Live At The Village Gate 1961 ... CD
Verve, 1961. Used ... $12.99
A fantastic lost slice of work from Stan Getz – one that features an early 60s group that was barely recorded at all, and which really shows Getz stretching out right before his bossa nova years! The quartet features a very young Steve Kuhn on piano, the great Roy Haynes on drums, and John Neves on bass – a lineup that has only been featured on Stan's album with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer from the same year – but which sounds very different here without a second horn player in the lead! The tracks are long, and very open – and Stan's hitting modes that are a lot more like the sounds he'd reach during his Sweet Rain years, with the group that included Chick Corea – making this record a key bridge backwards, showing what might have happened to early 60s Getz, had the bossa nova recordings not dominated that time. Stan's tone is fantastic – and the solos are very open and fluid, given plenty of inspiration by Kuhn's piano, which is still yet to find its later voice, but which definitely has the right sense of space. Haynes and Neves are wonderful too – especially the latter, who's got this tone that's well-placed, but never dominating – a great complement to Roy's always-creative sense of rhythm. The whole thing's a delight – as essential an addition to Stan's catalog as the discovery of the Nobody Else But Me album in the CD era. A lost treasure from the mid 80s Chicago rock scene – the self-titled, self-released first record from Green – with ultra catchy power pop melodies and an excitability that's as infectious as anything that came out of the Chi and other midwestern cities at the time! Green has both a sweetness and rawness that's in line with indie groups that made bigger waves nationally – and might be altogether better. Please don't take us for shameless home team flag wavers here, Green was the real thing, we can't think of a reason beyond bad luck that this record isn't mentioned in the same breath as other great records by groups such as The Replacements. And unlike some of our favorite albums from Chicago underground rock bands of the time, the lean, clear, but no frills production sounds just right to our ears. A total gem ripe for discovery! The Hawk Relaxes, but never lets himself go – and a set like this is a great illustration of the gentle genius that made so many later Coleman Hawkins records so great! The relaxed setting for this record is a perfect setting for Hawkins to open up and stretch out – working his tenor with a sound that has surprising modern edges, and unusual twists and turns, yet still all the careful economy of his better-known classic sides. There's a command of the instrument here that few other aging players ever seemed to muster – always a sense of new discovery and invention that marks the work strongly, even at a time when Hawkins could have been sitting on his laurels, playing the same old tune! Titles are all standards, but don't let that fool you – because there's plenty of magic in Coleman's versions of "Moonglow", "Just A Gigolo", "Speak Low", "When Day Is Done", and "I'll Never Be The Same". Oh, and we almost forgot – just because we're so focused on Hawkins – the other players include Ronnell Bright on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – making a surprising early appearance here! A fantastic selection of work from the great Tommy Hunt – a male singer who cut some incredible work in the 60s, but never fully got his due! Ace/Kent Records already helped bring Tommy's genius to the forefront with a previous collection – and this second set brings together even more rare, obscure tracks recorded for the Scepter and Dynamo labels – including unissued material – plus rare early singles for Atlantic and Capitol Records too – a wealth of work that will come as a fresh discovery to even big fans of Tommy's music! If you don't know Hunt at all, he's totally fantastic – part of a new wave of mature male soul singers in the 60s who could hit the depths of emotion, while also holding things together – work that's very much in the best spirit of Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson at the time – but often has a bit more punch, too – and the impeccable New York presentation you might expect from the album's title. A really stunning set from Il Balletto Di Bronzo – a group who clearly have the instrumental chops to take off in a proggish way, but really keep things interesting here by staying in a grittier, more straightforward groove! The power of the drums and guitars is wonderful – almost funk rock at times, but with a slight bit more drama – which may well come from the dynamic lyrics sung in Italian! There's a focus and a punch to the record that really makes it stand out from the rest of the Italian scene at the time – a no-nonsense quality that seems more influenced by the American underground than some of the Anglo influences that were guiding most of the other groups. Were the set in English, and recorded on the Sunset Strip in 1968, it would have become a worldwide classic – yet the obscurity is what makes the album even more charming – a rich discovery all these many years later. Southern hillbilly soul from Fern Jones – a minister, church singer and songwriter with a real feel for the secular shake of 50s Sun Records, honky tonk, and shout blues – a pure evangelical with a worldly groove! Fern worked the gospel circuit of tent and church shows for many, many years – but only recorded two albums, this one for Dot/Paramount. Fern sings in the torch country style of Patsy Cline, often with spare rockabilly-styled guitar and drums backbeat. This album is probably most noteworthy for the classic song "I Was There When It Happened" – co-written by Fern Jones and made famous by Johnny Cash. It's especially legendary because it was the only gospel number Sam Phillips allowed Cash to include on his first LP. But Fern's album is more than worthy of a late discovery – she's a true pioneer, fearlessly blending the Lord's work with the Devil's music – at a time when such poles were anathema for most artists, fans, and record labels alike! The title's an apt one, as the session truly has Karin Krog working "one on one" – in a series of duets recorded in the 70s with players that include bassist Red Mitchell, organist Nils Lindberg, and pianist Bengt Hallberg! The material was all originally recorded for the Bluebell label, but it also appears that the tracks on this set don't duplicate numbers issued on Krog's better-known albums with Mitchell and Hallberg – making the CD a great discovery of beautiful material from some of Karin's best years. Krog is one of the few vocalists who can really handle a session like this well – and in such an unfettered setting, her vocals seem to expand with a new sense of majesty – taking on new power and imagination that might have been held back if more instruments were added to the group. The first-ever album of studio duets between Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson – quite a surprise, given how often their paths have crossed over the years! The set was recorded in 2007, but only issued many years later – and it's a key document of the power that both improvisers have at this point in their career – each receiving strong global attention and facing new discovery by audiences nobody would have expected to be there for free jazz in the new millennium – but also able to completely put aside their egos and work together with the kind of sensitive interplay that only comes when you've got two masters in a rare moment like this. Sonically, the whole thing is very textural – maybe initially informed by that style that Gustafsson has of exploring all the outer reaches of a saxophone, from the tip of the reed right down to the surface of the pads – as he blows baritone, slide sax, and alto fluteophone – and McPhee works on pocket trumpet, alto, and alto clarinet. Titles include "Suicide Chicken Wings Over Nickelsdorf", "Bat Cave Feast", "Just Blue", "Just Green", "Race Matters", and "Blame Game". CD

Charles MingusTijuana Moods (expanded edition) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Oh how we love this album – and we think it may well be the best album ever from Charles Mingus! The set was recorded in that magical Mingus year of 1957, but oddly not released until 1962 – missing some of the initial frenzy of his discovery during the Atlantic and Columbia years. But the album's actually a treasure that predates the better-known latter sides – with a sharpness and intensity that Mingus hardly ever matched again! The group is one of his strongest ever – with Shafi Hadi on alto, Clarence Shaw on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Bill Triglia on piano. There's a slight Latin vibe, as you might expect from the title – but it's very slight overall, and most of the tunes are in that sharply angular, fully expressive style that flowered most strongly for Mingus in the late 50s. There's not a wasted moment of music on the whole album – with tight solos and incredible rhythms that dominate every second of the extended tracks – and titles include "Dizzy Moods", "Flamingo", "Los Mariachis", "Ysabel's Tabel Dance", and "Tijuana Gift Shop". Plus, this 2CD set features a whopping 19 tracks added to the original album – with the bonus "A Colloquial Dream (aka Scenes In The City)", plus many alternates, breakdowns, and partial takes. A fitting tribute to this amazing album! CD

PiscesLovely Sight ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
Rare late 60s psychedelia from blue collar Rockford, Il – a totally great lost album of pop psych tunefulness from Pisces – who had an incredible knack for experimental sounds that weave in and out of the hallucinatory pop structure! The group centered around core players Jim Krein and Paul DiVenti, and a number of the tunes have fragile, beautiful lead vocals by Linda Bruner, bringing in a bit of Velvets style stark, haunting loveliness – and most of the tracks languished unreleased all this time! This is essentially the first real release of almost all of the tunes, and the best shot at finding an adventurous audience any of it has ever had! We think this stuff would have been hugely influential had it found an audience in its time, hell, it sounds to us like it actually did influence countless groups, even though that's hardly even possible! There's a tunefulness at the center that bears the fruits of the experimental pop sounds that came from benchmark scenes of the era, from Haight Ashbury to Abbey Road – but the found sound ephemera, tape manipulations, and tripped out atmospherics really bring in some far out vibes! An essential discovery from Numero that's as exciting, insistently groovy and eclectic as any of the rock oriented stuff they've dug up to date! Titles include "Dear One", "Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight", "Motley Mary Ann", "Say Goodbye To John", "The Music Box", "Like A Hole In The Wall Where The Rat Lives", "Elephant Eyes", "Circle Of Time" and more – plus the "extended play" bonus tracks "A Flower For All Seasons" and "In The Summer A Grape Grows". ✨✧ RotomagusSky Turns Red – The Complete Anthology ... CD
Lion, Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Rare rock from Rotomagus – a heavy group from France – the complete discography of the group, and a completely fresh discovery to us! The sound is loose, ragged and raw on the unreleased album demo that's covers the first half of the anthology – which only enhances the power of it. Singer Alain Fontaine sings, screams and wails in English – fascinatingly, he is a good singer, but shrieks his head off with abandon on some killer songs here. The band is just as strong, showing command of rhythm and with strong solos as well as bashing away with intensity. In some ways, it's a late 60s-style heavy psych album, but played at breakneck speed, rugged soul and with little effort to tidy anything up. The second half is much different – featuring singles the group cut for Polydor, CBS and other labels – far less raucous and more French pop psych-indebted, and those numbers are great, too! They work as well in frenzy as they do with trippy harmonies – very impressive! Titles include "Laureline", "Little Green Man", "Fighting Cock", "Shout Now", "I Dig Life", "The Flufluting Flatmul" and more from the unreleased demo album, plus the rare singles "Le Haut Du Pave", "Nevada", "Eros", "Madame Wanda", "Laureline", "The Sky Turns Red" and more. Elektra/Strut (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $32.99 34.99
A sweeeeeet groover by Patrice Rushen – her first album for Elektra, and a stunning blend of funky jazz and soul! The record really has Patrice stepping out from her earlier years at Prestige – working in some surprisingly great vocals next to tight lines on Fender Rhodes, synth, and clavinet, handled with a smooth and soulful quality that's wonderful all the way through – a blend of soul and jazz that few other players could do this well – no matter how many others tried to copy her style over the years! Rhythms are as hard and heavy as on the Prestige years, and the keyboards have a great sort of focus too – just the right mix of jazz to offset the vocals – which themselves are a wonderful discovery. The whole album's a gem – and tracks include the great funky classic "Hang It Up", plus "Changes (In Your Life)", "When I Found You", "Play", "Didn't You Know?", and "Music Of The Earth". 2LP version features bonus tracks – "Music Of The Earth (Danny Krivit edit)", "Hang It Up (12" mix)", "Play (12" mix)", and "Didn't You Know (ext)". Groundbreaking early work from Suns Of Arqua – recorded on the London scene at the end of the 70s, with this amazing blend of instrumental elements from around the globe – but all at a level that's far from the cliches such albums would have in later years! Instead, there's this fresh sense of discovery going on – a criss-crossing of sounds from Jamaican dub, Irish folk, Spanish flamenco, and other genres come together beautifully – all with help from On-U Records maestro Adrian Sherwood – who must have gotten some of the ideas for his later projects from working on this set! The range of instrumentation is amazing – and includes cuica, harmonium, sitar, esraj, tabla, Chinese shwam, flamenco guitar, banjo, and lots more – on titles that include "Sully's Reel", "World Peace A Dream", "Acid Tabla", "Piece Of The World", "Paintings Of A Cave", and "Sanaiscara Saturn". Concord, 1987. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A key pairing of vocalist Mel Torme and pianist George Shearing – two aging jazz artists who really helped re-ignite each others' careers in the 80s! The format here takes Torme back to the best years of his jazz roots – and features spare backing from Shearing's trio, at a level that's intimate, but never too sleepy or prone with cliche. Shearing's touch on the keys is wonderfully sensitive – never just standard backing to a singer – and in a way, he brings out a new sense of depth in Torme's vocals, one that never showed itself so strongly, or so personally in the past. And best of all, at the time of this recording, the duo haven't yet lapsed into the cliches that would later mar their pairing – and instead really work together beautifully in a fresh sense of discovery and joy in each others' company. ✨✧ Scott WalkerClimate Of Hunter ... CD
Virgin, 1984. Used ... $6.99
A key slice of Scott Walker genius – and his only recording from the 80s, cut on the heels of a re-discovery of his older music, but a far step ahead than anything Walker had done before! Climate Of Hunter is far darker than the famous Philips albums – and carries with it echoes of his last few tunes with the re-formed Walker Brothers in the late 70s – a bleaker look at life than ever before, but one that's still touched with the sense of poetry that Scott always brought to his work, and sung in that godlike voice we love so much! Instrumentation carries a definite feel of the time – with some echoes of British post-punk production, especially in the way the drums and guitar are recorded. Yet there's also a timeless quality to the album here too – and each year past its release settles it more warmly into the classic and better-known Scott Walker catalog. Surprising guest appearances on the set include Evan Parker, Ray Russell, Mark Isham, and even Billy Ocean – and titles include "Rawhide", "Dealer", "Track 3", "Sleepwalkers Woman", "Track 5", and "Track 7". Mason WilliamsMason Williams Phonograph Record/Ear Show/Music By/Handmade/Sharepickers ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Five really inventive albums from the great Mason Williams – presented here in a single package! First up is the Mason Williams Phonograph Record – amazing stuff, one of those records you see for years, and always pass by – but which yields some real surprises once you dig in! Mason Williams is one of the cooler cats in the Warner Brothers stable of the late 60s – but he's also one of the more subtle, too – a folkie at heart, but an artist with a really great sense of wit, warmth, and variety – very much in the best genre-stepping style of the Burbank scene of the time. The set features, of course, Mason's huge hit "Classical Gas" – an instrumental you'll recognize instantly – but next to that is the sublime "Baroque A Nova", a very cool scatting harmony track that's like some lost late 60s Hugo Montenegro gem – and the camp psych gem "The Prince's Panties" – done with all the wit of late 60s Warner – as is the whole album! Other tracks include "Wanderlove", "Overture", "All The Time", and "She's Gone Away". Next is the Mason Williams Ear Show – a wonderfully weird record from the mighty Mason Williams – a set that's filled with lots of cool little surprises at each new twist and turn – yet which also comes across with a really solid, tuneful feel overall! The album's got a bit of folk, a bit of moog, and a bit of kitsch – but has a way of serving it all up with the kind of warmth and wit we love so much in that unique late 60s Warner Brothers moment – the same sort of vibe you might get from Van Dyke Parks or Harpers Bizarre at their best. Some tunes have Mason Williams singing these beautifully poetic lyrics straight, while others evoke the playful feel of his appearances on the Smothers Brothers Show – but things are really balanced throughout, and give the record that sense of discovery we hardly ever find in albums these days. Titles include a new version of "Baroque A Nova" from Mason's first album, the cool electronic "Generatah Oscillatah" instrumental, the groovy "Last Great Waltz", a "One Minute Commercial", and a wild remake of "Cinderella Rockefella" – plus "Saturday Night At The World", "$13 Stella", and "Whistle Hear". Music By Mason Williams is sublime genius from Mason – one of the most subtle talents in the Warner hip stable at the time – more so than even Jack Nitzsche or Van Dyke Parks! The album is a non-ironic blend of soundtrack styles, country music, and even some pseudo classical numbers – all handled with that youthful sense of nostalgic loss that seems to oddly characterize so much of the best work of the late 60s Warner scene. Titles include "Cowboy Buckaroo", "J Edgar Swoop", "Sunflower", "A Major Thang", "The Brothers Theme", and "Bucko's Memoirs". Handmade is a record that's lovingly handmade by Warner studio genius Mason Williams – an artist who, like so many of Warner's great talents of the late 60s, started out in folk, but soon exploded to great new heights in the recording freedom offered by the label – as you'll hear in this really incredible set! Williams mixes acoustic instrumentation with larger arrangements, offbeat rhythms, and occasional vocals – post-folk, post-sunshine pop, and with these hip undercurrents that were barely understood in the right way at the time – even though Mason himself was enough of a popular figure for some folks. The songwriting is smart, and the instrumentation and arrangements even more so – as you'll hear on a great reworking of his famous "Classical Gas", plus "Jose's Piece", "Find A Reason To Believe", "Saturday Night At The World", "Tomato Vendetta", and "It's Over". Sharepickers is the last album in an amazing run of records that Mason Williams did for Warner Brothers – impossible to define in easy terms, as the whole thing is a mix of acoustic instrumentation, larger arrangements, occasional vocals, and this wonderful interplay between underground artists and top-shelf studio talents on the LA scene of the time! Williams' instrumental chops alone would have made the record great – but he really knocks it out of the park with his overall conception, which fits in that unique late 60s/early 70s Warner space perfectly, next to albums by Van Dyke Parks, Neon Philharmonic, John Hartford, and some of the other genre-breaking talents on the label. Titles include "Train Ride In G", "Poor Little Robin", "Godsend", "Linda Crest Lament", "A Little Bit Of Time", "Largo De Lux", and "Here I Am Again". CD

A fantastic tribute to one of the greatest soul labels of the 80s – the groundbreaking Uno Melodic imprint, started by soul legend Roy Ayers as a showcase for some of his more creative projects! The vibe here follows perfectly from Roy's classic late 70s work on Polydor – and his famous album with Ramp – with a wicked blend of jazz, soul, and funk – all given a very sophisticated, righteous spin – with rhythms and instrumentation that are way different than the mainstream! That doesn't mean that these tunes aren't groovers – just that many were so far ahead of their time, they've only gotten full acclaim in recent decade – thanks to new discovery by DJs and hip hoppers, who've sampled more than a few of these cuts. A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Storming soul groovers from Era Records – an LA label that was known for a host of different genres, but who managed to cut some marvelous Northern Soul in the mid 60s! Era's an under-tapped source for work of this nature – as evidenced by the number of previously-unreleased cuts on the collection – showing that even if you have a handful of singles on Era from the 60s, you've still got plenty more to discover! The music has a great 60s LA finish – swinging soul with a very tight approach to rhythm, and a subtle set of drama that makes most of the lyrics break out differently than more familiar soul music from back east. A much-needed look at the Japanese rock scene at the start of the 70s – one that was going through as many amazing changes as the world of music in the US and UK, but which has always been far out of reach for most listeners in the English-speaking world! The collection's not super-underground – a number of these artists recorded for major labels – but overall, the sounds within will be a fresh discovery for most ears – and a mindblowing one as well, with music at a free-thinking level that rivals some of the best work coming out on hip Anglo imprints at the time – like Harvest, Vertigo, or Island Records! Lyrics are all in Japanese, but all other aspects of the music echo the hippest Brit modes of the period – some folksy acoustic material, reworked with hipper jazzier currents – some broodingly dark sounds that would never have emerged a few years before – and an overall nicely organic vibe that really holds together all the way through. There's no avant, prog, or noisy material – which makes for a tight focus that really makes the whole thing feel very unified – and the notes provide plenty of background for novice English-speaking listeners, too. Hardly the gospel of your father's generation – and hardly even the gospel of previous Numero releases either – as the set's a wonderfully offbeat batch of tracks that definitely lives up to the "apocryphal" in the title! Production sounds and musical styles go way past the mainstream – and lots of these numbers feel like secular soul from the definite left end of the spectrum in the 70s – especially the mellower cuts, which have a trippy quality that comes from weird instrumentation and unusual studio work – often matched by vocal presentation that's anything but spiritual, and which feels more like Darondo overall! These tunes are a real discovery – a deeper level of unusual gospel recordings than even the funk and or soul sides featured on other compilations – all pulled from the hinterland of self-released albums and singles from back in the day. As usual, Numero's done as great of job with the notes and packaging as they have with the music – really telling the full tale of this unusual stream of music – in a smoking set that features "That's All I Need" by Sensational Saints, "A Message Especially From God" by Robert Vanderbilt & The Foundation Of Souls, "Come Holy Spirit" by God's Band, "Faith" by Soul Superiors, "Can't Run This Race Alone" by Flying Eagles Gospel Singers, "Searching For The Truth" by Dwain Vinyard, "Get Involved" by Jonah Thompson, and "I Hear You Calling" by Francis Reneau & The Mission Singers. The heavier sound of UK girl pop in the 60s – not the sunnier, more string-laden sounds that were crossing the Atlantic at the time – but female singers who gravitated towards a deeper, fuzzier side of the spectrum – and were often years ahead of their time with their approach! The collection really does a great job of bringing together lost singles from this wonderful era – and although there's definitely a few names here we'd heard before, there's lots more that are a really great new discovery – especially on some of these tracks, which might be a bit harder-hitting than their more familiar material. If you dig more familiar 60s Brit pop, don't worry – there's still plenty of catchy hooks and soulful grooves going on here – but there's also a sharper edge that you'll really appreciate too. Titles include "Dancing Yet" by Liza & The Jet Set, "Music Talk" by Beryl Marsden, "Like The Big Man Said" by Toni Daly, "I Want That Boy" by The Chantelles, "The Boy I Used To Know" by Andee Silver, "Mama Didn't Lie" by Jean & The Statesides, "He Doesn't Want You" by The Three Bells, "Whatcha Gonna Do" by Billie Davis & The Leroys, "Stop & You Will Become Aware" by Helen Shapiro, "Love Is A Word" by Alma Cogan, "Don't Do It No More" by Julie Driscoll, and "Sweet & Tender Romance" by The McKinleys. VariousPyramid Pieces – Modal & Eco-Jazz From Australia 1969 to 1979 ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $36.99 39.99
A stunning discovery of Australian jazz in the 70s – and a long-overdue look at the deeper currents of that nation's overlooked scene! Aussie jazz is always pretty darn fantastic – inspired by the hippest American and European styles, but often something very much of its own – and that's definitely the case with the music here, which is part of a tradition on the scene to maybe open the music to more organic elements, sometimes in direct reference to the special natural qualities of the Australian continent – sometimes just with this sense of progression and overall vibe that's very distinct, and really beautiful. The set list is fantastic – key cuts from some of the most important artists and groups on the 70s scene – with titles that include "Exploration Of The Sun" by John Sangster, "A La Coltrane" by Jazz Co/Op, "Kate Did" by Galapagos Duck, "Wildflowers" by Brian Brown, "People Make The World Go Round" by Peter Gaudion's Blues Express, and "Sunflower" by Alan Lee. ✨✧ VariousSwave Villi Us – Independent Soul 1971 to 1984 ... LP
Backatcha (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $42.99 44.99
A really unique take on the familiar territory of the funky soul compilation – a set that seems to dig up music that's a genre all unto itself – with very little ties to the popular modes in the mainstream at the time! It's really hard to describe the appeal of these tunes in just a few words – some are very personal and intimate, all are very soulful – but the range of approaches is very different, and in ways that we might even dare call experimental – even though all the tunes here are straight and tuneful! A number of cuts almost seem to mix sweet soul vocals with more psychedelic inspirations, but that's only the start of the sound here – a really rich world of discovery, with titles that include "Just A Star" by Smiles, "Never Get A Chance" by Nature's Choice, "You Got That Right" by Antwans, "We Need Each Other" by Joe Walker, "Come Inside" by Stride, "Slacking Off" by Massauvians, "Swave Villi Us" by Aka Shaic, "Norfolk Sound" by Ray T Jones, "Changes" by No ID, "Just Loving You" by Small Society, and "For Old Times Sakes" by Spice. ✨✧ Daniela Und AnnSamba Soul – Beat In Black & White ... CD
Orange/Sonorama (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A little bit funky, and a lotta bit groovy – a really wonderful little record that's an odd melange of soul, funk, and bossa elements! The pair at the front – Daniela and Ann – sing together in a harmonic style that's a bit like the female voices in Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – but the overall musical style is far from straight bossa – and often has some odder, trippier jazz touches – thanks to the presence of players like Sigi Schwab on guitar and electric sitar, Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, and Olaf Kuebler on tenor sax! Some of the grooves have eletric bossa moments, but others show more late 60s European elements that belie the record's German origin – traces of MPS fusion, Peter Thomas playfulness, and some especially nice studio techniques that make for some really cool moments, and a really offbeat album that's quite a musical discovery overall. Titles include "Life Is Nothing But A Dream", "Somebody Somebody", "The Reason Why", "The Pain In My Heart", "Mi Lobo Mi Libi", "A Man & His Girlfriend", "When I Look At You", and "All My Love Is Gone". ✨✧ Moussa DoumbiaKeleya – Malian Funk of the 1970s ... LP
Oriki (France), 1970s. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP features 7 titles that include "Yeye Mousso", "Wanri", "Samba", "Faux Marabout", "Djoliba", and "Mokholou". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Duke EllingtonDuke Ellington Live At The Newport Jazz Festival 1959 ... CD
EmArcy, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare slice of Duke Ellington at Newport in the 50s – recorded live at the festival in 1959, but unlike other sessions of the time, never issued on record! The set remained unissued until Duke's 90th birthday, and it's a great discovery that easily matches the strength of Ellington's larger live recordings for Columbia at the same time. As is usual for this type of outing, there's a number of shorter tracks that reprise Ellington favorites for the crowd – but those are offset by longer, more serious works that are deeply complex, the highlight of which is "Idiom 59", a great lost composition done especially for the Festival! The full performance runs for over an hour – with players that include Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Harry Carney, and Johnny Hodges – and other tunes include "Cop Out", "Rockin In Rhythm", "Skin Deep", "Jam With Sam", "Perdido", and "Jones". ✨✧ HeliocentricsQuatermass Sessions – From The Deep ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the original Quatermass EP from The Heliocentrics – but material that takes off in an even fuller, heavier direction – and which may well be the funkiest sounds we've heard from these guys so far! The music is stunning right from the very first heavy bassline and sharp drum crackle – more focused, more full-on, and more funky than before – with this mindblowing mix of super-tight rhythms and nicely trippy work on keyboards and guitar – all freaky and fuzzy, but always with a sense of purpose, too – and never just crazy for the sake of crazy! These guys really hit a new high with this set – simply wonderful, and at a level that has us falling in love with them all over again. Titles include "The Pit", "Gas Bottle", "Discovery", "Phenomenon Of Man", "Telekinesis", "Night & Day", "Looking Back", "Mass Psychosis", and "The Final Conclusion". CD

✨✧ Fern JonesGlory Road ... CD
Dot/Numero, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Original album tracks include "You Ain't Got Nuthin'", "I Do Believe", "Be Thankful You're You", "I Ain't Got Time", "Let Tomorrow Be" – plus the bonus tracks "When I Meet You", "By And By", "I Don't Care What The World May Do" and "This World Is Not My Home". ✨✧ Charles Mingus with Eric DolphyCornell 1964 ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real musical discovery – not just for the fact that the CD represents a previously-unreleased concert by Charlies Mingus – but also because the sounds and styles here offer up a version of Mingus that's almost more adventurous than some of his other albums of the time! The sextet features some key work by Eric Dolphy on alto sax, flute, and bass clarinet – but all other players are wonderful too, and include Johnny Coles on trumpet, Clifford Jordan on tenor, Jaki Byard on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums – all coming together with a sense of power and presence that matches that of a group double their size! The long tracks on the set allow plenty of space for individual expression – some stretched-out solos that really push the limits of the music, sometimes going farther outside than we might expect – almost in the manner of some of Coltrane's important live dates of the same year. Titles include "ATFW You", "Fables Of Faubus", "Take The A Train", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress", "Meditations", "So Long Eric", "Jitterbug Waltz", and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling". CD

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeSpace 1999 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Penta/Beat (Italy), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unique little record – one that's a revelation both to lovers of the music of Ennio Morricone, and fans of the sci-fi TV classic Space 1999! The program was famously scored by Barry Gray – in a sweet 70s variation of the best Brit TV modes – but here, the music is provided by Ennio Morricone – who created his own music for a special cinematic release in Italy – sounds that didn't get any global circulation at the time, and which are quite unknown to longtime devotees of the program, too! Morricone's music is extremely moody – an unusual blend of avant jazz, electronics, and other offbeat touches that are lifted from his horror work, but then abstracted in a very different way – and used here in some of his most striking sounds since his performances with the Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova. CD features 70 minutes of music in all – a great discovery – and titles include "Eletronica #1", "Parallasse", "Suoni Di Una Nuova Civilita", "Interposione", "Studio", "Follia Nello Spazio", "Fasi", and "Elettronica #4". Warner, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from the genius moment of late 60s Warner Brothers – a set we'd rank right up there next to our favorites by Van Dyke Parks and Harper's Bizarre! The set's billed as a "phonograph opera", written by Tupper Saussy – and it's served up with these fantastic arrangements that are ambitious, but nicely handled, too – with lots of groovy currents that keep the whole thing far from soppier territory of cats like Rod McKuen, and always done with that great sense of wit that makes this Warner era so great! There's definitely a few tuneful tracks that could spin as Sunshine Pop hits – but the whole thing's really better taken as a whole, as the way everything comes together with a sense of mood and tone is completely sublime – really a lost aesthetic, and one that deserves new discovery all these many years later. Titles include "Morning Girl", "Brilliant Colors", "Little Sparrow", "The Last Time I Saw Jacqueline", "Cowboy", and "The New Life Out There". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PlattersMusicor Years ... CD
Musicor/Kent (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Platters reached their greatest fame at the end of the 50s – but we've always been much bigger fans of their mid 60s work for Musicor, sides that took the group into much stronger soul territory – and featured some tremendous tunes in both sweet and Northern soul styles! By the time of these tracks, lead singer Tony Williams – the group's "voice" in their classic years – had long since departed, and in his place was the rougher, more soul-styled vocalist Sonny Turner – a great singer who really transformed the group's sound, along with producers Luther Dixon, Popcorn Wylie, and others, who cooked up The Platters' groove with plenty of Detroit and New York soul touches of the time! Given the initial sophistication of The Platters sound, the group were a perfect choice to take on some of the classier modes of 60s soul – and as you'll hear on this set, they had an incredible way with a tune that really pulled out the hooks and set a personal edge on their tunes, even when they were working with tracks done by other artists. And despite a few standout hits from this stretch, most of the group's work is far lesser-known – making this overstuffed CD a great discovery in 60s soul – a much-needed look at some excellent tunes that really slipped through the cracks over the years, most likely because of a focus on the group's bigger early hits. 28 tracks in all, with great notes on the music – and a set list that includes "Sweet Sweet Lovin", "Goin Back To Detroit", "Devri", "Doesn't It Ring A Bell", "With This Ring", "I Love You 1000 Times", "Baby Baby", "Singalingaloo", "Get A Hold Of Yourself", "Washed Ashore", "Sonata", "Why", "What Name Shall I Give You My Love", and "Think Before You Walk Away".
